Analysis of Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid Alternative Propulsion Systems for Regional Diesel-Electric Multiple Unit Trains
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: diesel-electric multiple units, energy costs, energy management strategy, GHG emissions, hybrid propulsion systems, plug-in hybrid propulsion systems, regional railways
This paper presents a simulation-based analysis of hybrid and plug-in hybrid propulsion system concepts for diesel-electric multiple unit regional railway vehicles. These alternative concepts primarily aim to remove emissions in terminal stops with longer stabling periods, with additional benefits reflected in the reduction of overall fuel consumption, produced emissions, and monetary costs. The alternative systems behavior is modeled using a backward-looking quasi-static simulation approach, with the implemented energy management strategy based on a finite state machine control. A comparative assessment of alternative propulsion systems is carried out in a case study of a selected regional railway line operated by Arriva, the largest regional railway undertaking in the Netherlands. The conversion of a standard diesel-electric multiple unit vehicle, currently operating on the network, demonstrated a potential GHG reduction of 9.43−56.92% and an energy cost reduction of 9.69−55.46%, dep... March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fuzzy theory, hybrid optimization, MORPD problem, multi-objective, wind farms
Reactive Power Dispatch is one of the main problems in energy systems, particularly for the power industry, and a multi-objective framework should be proposed to solve it. In this study, we present a multi-objective framework for the optimization of wind turbines in wind farms. We investigate a new combined optimization method with Chaotic Local Search, Fuzzy Interactive Honey Bee Mating Optimization, Data-Sharing technique and Modified Gray Code for discrete variables. We use the proposed model to select optimal energy system parameters. The optimization process is based on simultaneous optimization of three functions. Finally, we improve a new method based on Pareto-optimal solutions to select the best one among all candidate solutions. The presented model and methodology are validated on energy systems with wind turbines. The evaluated efficiency is compared with the real system.

Deflagration Characteristics of N2-Diluted CH4-N2O Mixtures in the Course of the Incipient Stage of Flame Propagation
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: closed spherical bomb, flame propagation, incipient stage, methane, N2O
In this study, experimental measurements in a spherical combustion bomb were performed in order to investigate the flame propagation in N2-diluted CH4-N2O mixtures with stoichiometric equivalence ratio, at several initial pressures (0.5−1.75 bar) and ambient initial temperatures. Methane was chosen as a test-fuel, since it is the main component of natural gas, a fuel often used as a substitute to gasoline in engines with internal combustion and industrial plants. The method approached in this study is based on a simple examination of the cubic law of pressure rise during the early (incipient) period of flame propagation. The incipient stage defined by a pressure rise equal or smaller than the initial pressure, was divided into short time intervals. The burnt mass fractions (obtained using three different Equations) and flame radii at various moments of the flame propagation in the course of the incipient stage were calculated. The cubic law coefficients and corresponding laminar burnin... [more]

Keywords: autothermal reforming, auxiliary power unit, catalytic burner, diesel reforming, fuel cell system, HT-PEFC system, NEXBTL diesel, water-gas shift
A complete fuel cell-based auxiliary power unit in the 7.5 kWe power class utilizing diesel fuel was developed in accordance with the power density and start-up targets defined by the U.S. Department of Energy. The system includes a highly-integrated fuel processor with multifunctional reactors to facilitate autothermal reforming, the water-gas shift reaction, and catalytic combustion. It was designed with the help of process analyses, on the basis of which two commercial, high-temperature PEFC stacks and balance of plant components were selected. The complete system was packaged, which resulted in a volume of 187.5 l. After achieving a stable and reproducible stack performance based on a modified break-in procedure, a maximum power of 3.3 kWe was demonstrated in a single stack. Despite the strong deviation from design points resulting from a malfunctioning stack, all system functions could be validated. By scaling-up the performance of the functioning stack to the level of two stacks,... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: microgeneration, PM generator, regenerative braking, small wind turbines
This paper presents AC/DC converters for cost-effective small wind turbine systems. The analysis focuses on reliable, sensor-less, and low-cost solutions. A recently developed type of the three phase AC/DC two-switch converter is compared, for the first time, using simulations and experiments, with two other converters. The operating principles and control methods are discussed. Simulation results are verified experimentally and interesting conclusions are drawn. It is shown that less known converters are also attractive solutions for use in small wind turbines.

Microwave Assisted Alkaline Pretreatment of Algae Waste in the Production of Cellulosic Bioethanol
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: acid hydrolysis, bioethanol, energy consumption, industrial waste, microwave pretreatment
Biomass pretreatment has an important role in the production of cellulosic bioethanol. In this study, the effectiveness of microwave assisted alkaline pretreatment of algae waste was analysed. After pretreatment, the product was hydrolysed using sulphuric acid. The effects of microwave power, irradiating time, solid−liquid ratio and NaOH concentration were examined. Under the best conditions, the fermentable sugars were converted to cellulosic bioethanol using Saccharomyces Cerevisiae with a bioethanol yield of 1.93 ± 0.01 g/g and a fermentation efficiency of 40.4%. The reducing sugars concentration was 30% higher than that obtained from conventional hydrolysis without pretreatment. The obtained results suggest that microwave assisted alkaline pretreatment is effective in improving the production of cellulosic bioethanol of algae waste compared to that without microwave effect. Considering energy consumption, low microwave power and short microwave irradiation time are favourable for t... [more]

A Capacity Market for the Transition towards Renewable-Based Electricity Generation with Enhanced Political Feasibility
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: focused capacity market, internalization of external costs, political feasibility, transition to renewable energy
There is a debate if electricity markets on the basis of energy-only markets ensure a sufficient generation capacity. Various capacity mechanisms are discussed to tackle this potential problem. Capacity auctions with reliability options are seen as one market-based solution. Assuming a perfect energy-only market, this mechanism leads to an equilibrium with an optimal capacity mix. This optimum is missed if there are distorted price signals at the electricity market. This is a serious problem since, despite substantial cost reductions, renewable-based electricity generation still depends on subsidies, which are not internalized at electricity markets. We develop a capacity market that internalizes subsidies for RES without direct intervention in the electricity market. The result is an endogenous discrimination of capacity prices, which enhances acceptance for a capacity market. Arising incentives direct the capacity mix to an equilibrium where discriminated prices converge to one unifo... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dual pressure cycle, split cycle, thermodynamic analysis, waste heat recovery
To efficiently recover the waste heat of mobile engine, two advanced transcritical power cycles, namely split cycle and dual pressure cycle, are employed, based on the recuperative cycle. Performances of the two cycles are analyzed and compared through the development of thermodynamic models. Under given gas conditions, seven high-temperature working fluids, namely propane, butane, isobutane, pentane, isopentane, neopentane, and cyclopentane, are selected for the two cycles. At the design system parameters, the highest work 48.71 kW, is obtained by the split cycle with butane. For most of fluids, the split cycle has a higher work than the dual pressure cycle. Furthermore, with the increase of turbine inlet pressure, net work of the split cycle goes up firstly and then decreases, while the work of dual pressure cycle increases slowly. For the split cycle, there exists a split ratio to get the maximum network. However, for the dual pressure cycle, the larger the evaporation temperature,... [more]

Co-Digestion of Kitchen Waste with Grass and Leaves after Hyperthermophilic Pretreatment for Methane and Hydrogen Production
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: grass, Hydrogen, hyperthermophilic treatment, kitchen waste, leaves, methane
The study investigated co-digestion batch experiments using kitchen waste (KW) and garden waste (GW) collected from individual households. Grass and leaves were first subjected to a 3-day hyperthermophilic pretreatment at 70 °C and 80 °C and then co-digested with kitchen waste at 35 °C and 55 °C. The hyperthermophilic pretreatment resulted in the solubilization of organic material with the release of fatty acids, whereas the biogas yield was negligible. In the second stage, the greatest methane yield of 387 NmL/gVS was achieved for the mono-digestion of leaves, whereas the co-digestion of grass with 50% KW gave the highest hydrogen production of 88 NmL/gVS. Considering the overall process performance, the best operating conditions were established using a 3-day hyperthermophilic pretreatment at 70 °C, followed by co-digestion at 55 °C in the second stage for the mixture of 25% garden waste with 75% KW.

Third-Order Sliding Mode Applied to the Direct Field-Oriented Control of the Asynchronous Generator for Variable-Speed Contra-Rotating Wind Turbine Generation Systems
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: asynchronous generators, direct field-oriented control, integral-proportional, third-order sliding mode control, variable speed dual-rotor wind turbine
Traditional direct field-oriented control (DFOC) techniques with integral-proportional (PI) controllers have undesirable effects on the power quality and performance of variable speed contra-rotating wind power (CRWP) plants based on asynchronous generators (ASGs). In this work, a commanding technique based on the DFOC technique for ASG is presented on variable speed conditions to minimize the output power ripples and the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the grid current. A new DFOC strategy was designed based on third-order sliding mode (TOSM) control to minimize oscillations and the THD value of the current and active power of the ASG; the designed technique decreases the current THD from ASG and does not impose any additional undulations in different parts of ASG. The designed technique is simply implemented on traditional DFOC techniques in variable speed DRWP systems to ameliorate its effectiveness. Also, the results show that by using the designed TOSM controllers, in addition... [more]

Energy Recovery in Air Conditioning Systems: Comprehensive Review, Classifications, Critical Analysis, and Potential Recommendations
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: classification, energy management, heat exchanger, heat recovery, HVAC, review
Energy has become the backbone of humanities daily activities. Heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems (HVAC), which consume around 39% of energy in the residential sector, have turned into an essential constituent for providing fresh air, especially after COVD-19, not only in hospitals but also in any simple construction. Thus, decreasing this percentage or recovering part of the energy lost is an essential issue in today’s energy management scenarios. In this context, the present manuscript suggests a comprehensive review, classifications, critical analysis, and potential recommendations for energy recovery in air conditioning systems. It classifies energy recovery into two main categories: using lost energy for external uses, such as heating domestic water, or with other devices; and using lost energy for internal uses, such as the hot airflow which can be reused again for increasing efficiency of HVAC. In addition, this paper presents a summary of previous research and u... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: clouds, forecasting, optical flow, persistence, satellite, solar
Solar energy production is affected by the attenuation of incoming irradiance from underlying clouds. Often, improvements in the short-term predictability of irradiance using satellite irradiance models can assist grid operators in managing intermittent solar-generated electricity. In this paper, we develop and test a satellite irradiance model with short-term prediction capabilities using cloud motion vectors. Near-real time visible images from Himawari-8 satellite are used to derive cloud motion vectors using optical flow estimation techniques. The cloud motion vectors are used for the advection of pixels at future time horizons for predictions of irradiance at the surface. Firstly, the pixels are converted to cloud index using the historical satellite data accounting for clear, cloudy and cloud shadow pixels. Secondly, the cloud index is mapped to the clear sky index using a historical fitting function from the respective sites. Thirdly, the predicated all-sky irradiance is derived... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: different batteries, integrated renewable energy system, off-grid microgrid, optimization techniques
Several families in India live in remote places with no access to grid-connected power supply due to their remoteness. The study area chosen from the Indian state of Odisha does not have an electrical power supply due to its distant location. As a result, this study analyzed the electrification process using Renewable Energy (RE) resources available in the locality. However, these RE resources are limited by their dependency on weather conditions and time. So, a robust battery storage system is needed for a continuous power supply. Hence, the Nickel Iron (Ni-Fe), Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) and Lead Acid (LA) battery technologies have been analyzed to identify a battery technology that is both technologically and economically viable. Using the available RE resources in the study area, such as photovoltaic and biomass energy resources, as well as the various battery technologies, three configurations have been modelled, such as Photovoltaic Panels (PVP)/Biomass Generator(BIOMG)/BATTERY(Ni-Fe),... Impact of Wind and Solar Generation on the Italian Zonal Electricity Price
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: inter-zonal exchange, Italian wholesale power market, Merit Order Effect, multivariate regression, solar power integration, wind power integration
This paper assesses the impact of increasing wind and solar power generation on zonal market prices in the Italian electricity market from 2015 to 2019, employing a multivariate regression model. A significant aspect to be considered is how the additional wind and solar generation brings changes in the inter-zonal export and import flows. We constructed a zonal dataset consisting of electricity price, demand, wind and solar generation, net input flow, and gas price. In the first and second steps of this study, the impact of additional wind and solar generation that is distributed across zonal borders is calculated separately based on an empirical approach. Then, the Merit Order Effect of the intermittent renewable energy sources is quantified in every six geographical zones of the Italian day-ahead market. The results generated by the multivariate regression model reveal that increasing wind and solar generation decreases the daily zonal electricity price. Therefore, the Merit Order Ef... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biogas, biomethane, purification
The global energy trends are currently dominated by a massive use of fossil non-renewable energy sources which are progressively depleting. In this way, the production of second-generation biogas production from organic wastes by the dark fermentation process offers, therefore, an attractive solution to diversify the present energy mix. The development of biogas production units has led to an increase in the quantity of biomethane, but it contains impurities. A biomethane purification and storage system was developed in this work to improve the quality of this biofuel. Solutions were first developed to capture carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, water, and volatile organic compounds found in the initial biogas. These solutions were based on a system of purification made up of water absorption reactions and iron oxide, activated charcoal, and steel wool adsorption. Thus, the biomethane obtained after purification has been stored in an inflatable balloon before being compressed into a refr... [more]

At a global level, buildings constitute one of the most significant energy-consuming sectors. Current energy policies in the EU and the U.S. emphasize that buildings, particularly those in the residential sector, should employ renewable energy and storage and efficiently control the total energy system. In this work, we propose a Home Energy Management System (HEMS) by employing a Model-Based Predictive Control (MBPC) framework, implemented using a Branch-and-Bound (BAB) algorithm. We discuss the selection of different parameters, such as time-step, to employ prediction and control horizons and the effect of the weather in the system performance. We compare the economic performance of the proposed approach against a real PV-battery system existing in a household equipped with several IoT devices, concluding that savings larger than 30% can be obtained, whether on sunny or cloudy days. Keywords: dynamic voltage stability, remote island power system, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, virtual synchronous generator
Increasing the proportion of renewable energy generations in remote island power systems is becoming essential for realizing decarbonized society. However, since inverter-connected renewable energies have different generation characteristics from conventional generators, the massive penetration can adversely affect system stability. In particular, fault events in such weak remote systems can cause fast voltage collapse, and there is a need to assess dynamic voltage stability. This study attempts dynamic voltage stability assessment using the critical boundary index (CBI) and investigates the impact of the virtual synchronous generator (VSG) on dynamic voltage stability. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ARDL bounds testing, economic growth, North Africa, residential CO2 emissions, Toda-Yamamoto Granger causality tests, urbanization
Rapid urbanization, coupled with income growth, will inevitably cause the residential energy consumption in the North Africa region to continue to increase, with adverse effects on the climate, human health, and the economy. In these regards, this paper explores the relationship between residential carbon dioxide emissions (RCO2), urbanization, economic growth, and residential energy use in four North African countries (Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, and Egypt) over the period 1990−2016. To do this, we used the bounds cointegration and the Toda−Yamamoto Granger causality test. The existence of cointegration relationships was confirmed for the four countries. In the long run, the environment Kuznets curve relationship between increased income per capita and RCO2 emissions was verified for only Morocco and Tunisia. The causality analysis also reveals a combination of neutral, unidirectional, and bidirectional relationships for all countries. The RCO2 emissions have not proved to be a limitin... [more]

Keywords: flow uniformity, heat exchanger, perforated plate, sodium-cooled fast reactor, steam generator
The steam generator in a nuclear power plant is a type of heat exchanger in which heat transfer occurs from the hot fluid in multiple channels to the cold fluid. Therefore, a uniform flow over multiple channels is necessary to improve heat exchanger efficiency. The study aims at experimentally investigating the improvement of flow uniformity by the perforated plate in the heat exchanger used for a sodium-cooled fast reactor stream generator.
