Optimal Sizing of Battery-Integrated Hybrid Renewable Energy Sources with Ramp Rate Limitations on a Grid Using ALA-QPSO
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery energy storage system, bifacial solar panels, floating solar PV, multi-objective ALA-QPSO, renewable energy sources
Higher penetration of variable renewable energy sources into the grid brings down the plant load factor of thermal power plants. However, during sudden changes in load, the thermal power plants support the grid, though at higher ramping rates and with inefficient operation. Hence, further renewable additions must be backed by battery energy storage systems to limit the ramping rate of a thermal power plant and to avoid deploying diesel generators. In this paper, battery-integrated renewable energy systems that include floating solar, bifacial rooftop, and wind energy systems are evaluated for a designated smart city in India to reduce ramping support by a thermal power plant. Two variants of adaptive-local-attractor-based quantum-behaved particle swarm optimization (ALA-QPSO) are applied for optimal sizing of battery-integrated and hybrid renewable energy sources to minimize the levelized cost of energy (LCoE), battery life cycle loss (LCL), and loss of power supply probability (LPSP).... Development and Experimental Validation of an Adaptive, Piston-Damage-Based Combustion Control System for SI Engines: Part 1—Evaluating Open-Loop Chain Performance
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CO2 emissions, combustion, control, efficiency improvement, knock, Modelling
This work is focused on the development and validation of a spark advance controller, based on a piston “damage” model and a predictive knock model. The algorithm represents an integrated and innovative way to manage both the knock intensity and combustion phase. It is characterized by a model-based open-loop algorithm with the capability of calculating with high accuracy the spark timing that achieves the desired piston damage in a certain period, for knock-limited engine operating conditions. Otherwise, it targets the maximum efficiency combustion phase. Such controller is primarily thought to be utilized under conditions in which feedback is not needed. In this paper, the main models and the structure of the open-loop controller are described and validated. The controller is implemented in a rapid control prototyping device and validated reproducing real driving maneuvers at the engine test bench. Results of the online validation process are presented at the end of the paper.

Crude Oil−Brine−Rock Interactions in Tight Chalk Reservoirs: An Experimental Study
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: chalk, core flooding, crude oil–brine–rock interactions, low salinity water, short core plug
We present a systematic study of crude oil−brine−rock interactions in tight chalk cores at reservoir conditions. Flooding experiments are performed on outcrops (Stevns Klint) as well as on reservoir core plugs from Dan field, the Ekofisk and Tor formations. These studies are carried out in core plugs with reduced pore volumes, i.e., short core samples and aged with a dynamic ageing method. The method was evaluated by three different oil compositions. A series of synthetic multicomponent brines and designed fluid injection scenarios are investigated; injection flow rates are optimized to ensure that a capillary-dominant regime is maintained. Changes in brine compositions and fluid distribution in the core plugs are characterized using ion chromatography and X-ray computed tomography, respectively. First, we show that polar components in the oil phase play a major role in wettability alteration during ageing; this controls the oil production behavior. We also show that, compared to seawa... Experimental Study on the Initiation and Propagation of Multi-Cluster Hydraulic Fractures within One Stage in Horizontal Wells
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: initiation and propagation of multiple fractures, multi-channel hydraulic fracturing, multiple fractures interaction, physical simulation, strain response characteristics
Competitive propagation of fractures initiated from multiple perforation clusters is universal in hydraulic fracturing of unconventional reservoirs, which largely influences stimulation. However, the propagation mechanism of multi-fractures has not been fully revealed for the lack of a targeted laboratory observation. In this study, a physical simulation experiment system was developed for investigating the initiation and propagation of multi-cluster hydraulic fractures. Different from the traditional hydro-fracking test system, the new one was equipped with a multi-channel shunting module and a strain monitoring system, which could guarantee the full fracture extension at each perforation clusters and measure the internal deformation of specimens, respectively. Several groups of true tri-axial fracturing tests were performed, considering the factors of in situ stress, cluster spacing, pumping rate, and bedding structures. The results showed that initiation of multi-cluster hydraulic f... [more]

Configuration Method and Multi-Functional Strategy for Embedding Energy Storage into Wind Turbine
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coordinated strategy, energy storage configuration, frequency modulation, structure modeling, wind power consumption
This paper proposes a Configuration method for energy storage (ES), in which the ES inertia of ES is equal to an equal capacity synchronous generator. The purpose is to enhance the frequency modulation capability of double-fed induction generator (DFIG) and wind power consumption. Through the proposed method, the system inertia can remain unchanged after the DFIGs replacing the conventional turbines. During the DFIG rotor speed recovery, the ES releases energy to compensate for sudden changes in active power. On this basis, the DFIG and ES structure model is created, and the ES control strategy is optimized, thereby effectively improving the DFIG frequency modulation capability. Besides, in the non-frequency modulation period, the ES is used to suppress wind power fluctuations, thereby improving system wind power consumption and ES utilization. Simulation results indicate, in the ES-embedded wind turbine structure model, the combination of the ES Configuration method and multi-function... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: alkaline electrolysis, hydrogen compression, hydrogen production, hydrogen storage, power to gas
Storing renewable energy in chemicals, like hydrogen, can bring various benefits like high energy density, seasonal storability, possible cost reduction of the final product, and the potential to let renewable power penetrate other markets and to overcome their intermittent availability. In the last year’s production of this gas from renewable energy sources via electrolysis has grown its reputation as one feasible solution to satisfy future zero-emission energy demand. To extend the exploitation of Renewable Energy Source (RES), small-scale conversion plants seem to be an interesting option. In view of a possible widespread adoption of these types of plants, the authors intend to present the experimental characterization of a small-scale hydrogen production and storage plant. The considered experimental plant is based on an alkaline electrolyser and an air-driven hydrogen compression and storage system. Development and Experimental Validation of an Adaptive, Piston-Damage-Based Combustion Control System for SI Engines: Part 2—Implementation of Adaptive Strategies
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adaptive strategy, CO2 emissions, combustion, control, efficiency improvement, knock
This work focuses on the implementation of innovative adaptive strategies and a closed-loop chain in a piston-damage-based combustion controller. In the previous paper (Part 1), implemented models and the open loop algorithm are described and validated by reproducing some vehicle maneuvers at the engine test cell. Such controller is further improved by implementing self-learning algorithms based on the analytical formulations of knock and the combustion model, to update the fuel Research Octane Number (RON) and the relationship between the combustion phase and the spark timing in real-time. These strategies are based on the availability of an on-board indicating system for the estimation of both the knock intensity and the combustion phase index. The equations used to develop the adaptive strategies are described in detail. A closed-loop chain is then added, and the complete controller is finally implemented in a Rapid Control Prototyping (RCP) device. The controller is validated with... [more]

A Review of Small−Medium Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Technologies and Their Role within the 100% Renewable Energy Systems Scenario
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combined heat and power (CHP), future energy scenario, renewable energies, waste heat recovery
The energy transition towards a scenario with 100% renewable energy sources (RES) for the energy system is starting to unfold its effects and is increasingly accepted. In such a scenario, a predominant role will be played by large photovoltaic and wind power plants. At the same time, the electrification of energy consumption is expected to develop further, with the ever-increasing diffusion of electric transport, heat pumps, and power-to-gas technologies. The not completely predictable nature of the RES is their well-known drawback, and it will require the use of energy storage technologies, in particular large-scale power-to-chemical conversion and chemical-to-power re-conversion, in view of the energy transition. Nonetheless, there is a lack in the literature regarding an analysis of the potential role of small−medium CCHP technologies in such a scenario. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to address what could be the role of the Combined Heat and Power (CHP) and/or Combined Cooling... [more]

Keywords: battery life, energy-aware design, GPS, phone service, service quality, smartphone, system-level power model
Mobile systems such as smartphones require accurate estimation of the battery-related features including the remaining energy and operating time, especially as the the power consumption of user applications is growing continuously these days. We present an energy-aware smartphone application design framework that considers the battery’s state of charge (SOC), energy depletion rate, as well as the service quality of the target application. We use a verified-accurate battery energy estimation method in an Android-OS-based mobile computing system. The battery model considers the rate-capacity effect. We apply regression-based models for the power estimation of the major subsystems in the smartphone, and then aggregate the result to yield the whole system’s power. We first determine the quality of service for the location device (GPS), the display device (LCD), and the overall system (application). Then, we control the error rate of the GPS and the brightness of the display to acquire the... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dispatch, electrical load, energy mix, energy transition, floating photovoltaics, grid integration, hydro generation, levelized cost of electricity, onshore wind, site appraisal and ranking, time complementarity
The adoption of a diversification strategy of the energy mix to include low-water consumption technologies, such as floating photovoltaics (FPV) and onshore wind turbines, would improve the resilience of the Zambian hydro-dependent power system, thereby addressing the consequences of climate change and variability. Four major droughts that were experienced in the past fifteen years in the country exacerbated the problems in load management strategies in the recent past. Against this background, a site appraisal methodology was devised for the potential of linking future and existing hydropower sites with wind and FPV. This appraisal was then applied in Zambia to all the thirteen existing hydropower sites, of which three were screened off, and the remaining ten were scored and ranked according to attribute suitability. A design-scoping methodology was then created that aimed to assess the technical parameters of the national electricity grid, hourly generation profiles of existing scena... [more]

Flow Field Parametric Interpolation Using a Proper Orthogonal Decomposition: Application to the Variable Valve Timing Effect on a Tumble In-cylinder Miller Engine Mean Flow
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: EIVC, interpolation, Miller cycle, PIV, POD, VVT
The current article presents a method to reconstruct the mean velocity field of a cyclic flow for an input parameter value that has not been measured, allowing for the number of tests to be reduced. It is applied to the tumble flow of a gasoline engine following a Miller cycle. New engines often include variable valve timing (VVT) systems to maximize the efficiency of such over-expanded cycles for different operating points. The reconstruction was thus carried out using different offset values of the intake valve lift timing. Experimental data were collected from a transparent engine in an early intake valve closing (EIVC) configuration using particle image velocimetry (PIV). The mean velocity field reconstruction was based on the interpolation of the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) coefficients. The accuracy of the method was evaluated at different points by comparing the interpolated and the measured flow fields. The accuracy was estimated by calculating the error in the rotati... [more]

The present study is devoted to the modeling, design, and experimental study of a heat pipe heat exchanger utilized as a recuperator in small air conditioning systems (airflow ≈ 300−500 m3/h), comprised of individually finned heat pipes. A thermal heat pipe heat exchanger model was developed, based on available correlations. To increase the efficiency of a natural gas engine, the use of a Miller camshaft was analysed. To avoid a decline in the low-end torque and also in the transient response, a pressure wave supercharger (Comprex™) was compared to the conventional single-stage turbocharger. The analyses for this conceptual comparison were performed experimentally, and the data were then used to run simulations of driving cycles for light commercial vehicles. A torque increase of 49% resulted at 1250 rpm when the Comprex™ was used in combination with a Miller camshaft. Despite the Miller camshaft, the Comprex™ transient response was still faster than the turbocharged engine. Using the same camshaft, the turbocharged engine took 2.5-times as long to reach the same torque. Water injection was used to increase the peak power output while respecting the temperature limitations. As the Comprex™ enables engine braking by design, we show that the use of friction brakes was reduced by two-thirds. Finally, a six-ti... [more]

Solar energy is going to be a major component of global energy generation. Loss due to dust deposition has raised a great concern to the investors in this field. Pre-estimation of this reduced generation and hence the economic loss will help the operators’ readiness for efficient and enhanced economic energy management of the system. In this paper, the universality of this model is established and is used to demonstrate the effect of generation loss due to dust deposition and of cleaning. Variation in the soiling pattern due to climatic covariates has also been studied. Generation loss is calculated for Solar Photovoltaic power plants of different capacities at various locations in India. Finally this model has also been extended to predict the generation accounting for the soiling loss in Photovoltaic system. Al... [more]

This paper presents a scientific development aimed at improving the efficiency of turbomachines through the joint use of rotary-vane and vortex workflows. In the well-known Euler turbine, the rotor flow channels represent a set of curved pipes. The authors propose to consider in more detail the possibilities of using such rotating pipes in the implementation of an ejection (vortex) workflow. A hybrid pump was considered with the conclusion that its workflow can be described using two Euler equations. The results of computer simulation indicate that hybrid turbomachines are promising. The use of additive technology allowed the creation of micromodels of the Euler turbine with various rotor designs. Laboratory hydraulic tests showed that the liquid inlet to the rotor is possible in pulse mode. Laboratory tests of micromodels using compressed air showed that gas (or liquid) motion through curved pipes could be carried out from the rotor periphery to its center and then back, albeit throug...
