The Selection of the Most Cost-Efficient Distributed Generation Type for a Combined Cooling Heat and Power System Used for Metropolitan Residential Customers
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: absorption chiller, combined cooling heat and power, distributed generation, microturbine
Distributed generation (DG) using renewable energy sources is of widespread interest. For example, modern centralized conventional fossil fuel power generation commonly adds DG using renewable energy resources to the grid. Therefore, in these changes, it is necessary to optimize renewable energy systems to increase energy efficiency and reduce emissions. In previous studies, meta-heuristic algorithms were used to optimize DG location and capacity, but different types of DG systems and integrated energy hub conditions were not considered. Determining the most effective DG type for an integrated energy hub is critical. Accordingly, this study presented a methodology for selecting the most cost-efficient DG for metropolitan residential customers of energy hubs. In this paper, we model energy hubs for residential customers and the most cost-efficient DG type using MATLAB and HOMER software, considering microturbine (MT), photovoltaic (PV), wind turbine, and fuel cell (FC) power sources. Frequency Control of Large-Scale Interconnected Power Systems via Battery Integration: A Comparison between the Hybrid Battery Model and WECC Model
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery energy storage system, decentralized control, distributed control, hybrid control, inter-are oscillations, Optimization
The increasing penetration of renewable energy sources in power grids highlights the role of battery energy storage systems (BESSs) in enhancing the stability and reliability of electricity. A key challenge with the renewables’, specially the BESSs, integration into the power system is the lack of proper dynamic models and their application in power system analyses. The control design strategy mainly depends on the system dynamics which underlines the importance of the system accurate dynamic modeling. Moreover, control design for the power system is a complicated issue due to its complexity and inter-connectivity, which makes the application of distributed control to improve the stability of a large-scale power system inevitable. This paper presents an optimal distributed control design for the interconnected systems to suppress the effects of small disturbances in the power system employing utility-scale batteries based on existing battery models. The control strategy is applied to t... [more]

Adsorption of Carbon Dioxide, Methane, and Nitrogen on Zn(dcpa) Metal-Organic Framework
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Adsorption, biogas, Carbon Capture, framework flexibility, gas storage, MOF, Zn(dcpa)
Adsorption-based processes using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a promising option for carbon dioxide (CO2) capture from flue gases and biogas upgrading to biomethane. Here, the adsorption of CO2, methane (CH4), and nitrogen (N2) on Zn(dcpa) MOF (dcpa (2,6-dichlorophenylacetate)) is reported. The characterization of the MOF by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and N2 physisorption at 77 K shows that it is stable up to 650 K, and confirms previous observations suggesting framework flexibility upon exposure to guest molecules. The adsorption equilibrium isotherms of the pure components (CO2, CH4, and N2), measured at 273−323 K, and up to 35 bar, are Langmuirian, except for that of CO2 at 273 K, which exhibits a stepwise shape with hysteresis. The latter is accurately interpreted in terms of the osmotic thermodynamic theory, with further refinement by assuming that the free energy difference between the two metastable structures of Zn(dcpa) is a norma... March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cashew nutshell seed oil, combustion, common rail direct injection, emissions, jackfruit seed and Jamun seed oil, performance
Biodiesel is a renewable energy source which is gaining prominence as an alternative fuel over fossil diesel for different applications. Due to their higher viscosity and lower volatility, biodiesels are blended with diesel in various proportions. B20 blends are viable and sustainable solutions in diesel engines with acceptable engine performance as they can replace 20% fossil fuel usage. Biodiesel blends are slightly viscous as compared with diesel and can be used in common rail direct injection (CRDI) engines which provide high pressure injection using an electronic control unit (ECU) with fuel flexibility. In view of this, B20 blends of three biodiesels derived from cashew nutshell (CHNOB (B20)), jackfruit seed (JACKSOB (B20)), and Jamun seed (JAMNSOB (B20)) oils are used in a modified single-cylinder high-pressure-assisted CRDI diesel engine. At a BP of 5.2 kW, for JAMNSOB (B20) operation, BTE, NOx, and PP increased 4.04%, 0.56%, and 5.4%, respectively, and smoke, HC, CO, ID, and C... [more]

A Hybrid Maximum Power Point Tracking Method without Oscillations in Steady-State for Photovoltaic Energy Systems
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: genetic algorithm (GA), maximum power point tracking (MPPT), partial shaded conditions (PSC), PV system
This paper proposes a hybrid maximum power point tracking (MPPT) method with zero oscillation in steady-state by combining genetic algorithm (GA) and perturbation and observation (P&O) method. The proposed MPPT can track the global maximum power point (GMPP) fast for a photovoltaic (PV) system even under partial shaded conditions (PSC). The oscillations around the GMPP are eliminated and the power loss can be reduced significantly. In addition, the proposed MPPT can make the PV system operate at the highest efficiencies under various atmospheric conditions. During the MPP tracking, the system will oscillate around the MPPs, resulting in unnecessary power loss. To solve the problem, the artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, such as PSO, Bee Colony optimization, GA, etc., were developed to deal with this issue. However, the problem with the AI algorithm is that the time for convergence may be too long if the range of the MPP search space is large. In addition, if the atmospheric condi... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: asymmetric spillover effect, carbon emission allowance price, carbon emission trading, coal price, connectedness network, crude oil price, natural gas price, new energy
In 2020, China proposed the goal of achieving carbon emission peaks by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060. For China, whose energy consumption structure has long been dominated by fossil energy, carbon trading and new energy are crucial for the realization of the emission target. By establishing a connectedness network model, this paper studies the static and dynamic spillovers between the Hubei carbon trading market, new energy stock market, crude oil market, coal market, and natural gas market in China, and draws the following conclusions: (1) the static spillover index of the carbon−energy−stock system is 3.57% and the dynamic spillover index fluctuates between 7.67% and 22.62%, indicating that the spillover effect of the system is low; (2) for the whole system, whether from a static or dynamic perspective, the carbon market always plays the role of net information receiver, while new energy is the net information transmitter; (3) the new energy stock market and the coal market alwa... Duct Attachment on Improving Breaking Wave Zone Energy Extractor Device Performance
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coastal engineering, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, structural response, wave energy converter
A challenging wave energy converter design that utilized the denser energy part of the nearshore breaking wave zone to generate electricity was introduced in 2016 by Shintake. The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University’s project aims to take advantage of breaking wave energy to harness electricity. The 2016 version of the device consisted only of a bare turbine and power generator. Early exploration of the design recorded short periods and high impact wave pressures were experienced by the structure, with the turbine unable to harvest energy effectively. Additional structure to not only reduce incoming impact pressure but also increase the duration of water flow through the turbine was needed. These are the main reasons behind incorporating the duct attachment into the design. This paper show that the duct is capable of halving the impact pressure experienced by the turbine and can increase the energy exposure by up to 1.6 times the bare turbine configuration.... [more]

Study on the Relationship between Combustion Parameters and Cylinder Head Vibration Signal in Time Domain
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combustion information estimation, combustion pressure, FEM analysis, vibration signal
Combustion-related characteristic parameters, such as the start of combustion (SoC) and the timing of the peak pressure increase rate (PIR), can be used as the feedback signals for the closed-loop control of combustion. A dynamic Finite Element Method (FEM) model was firstly developed to confirm the closely related time period between combustion pressure and vibration. On this basis, a fast processing method was developed to estimate the timings of SoC and the peak PIR in the closely related time period. This method was verified on a twelve-cylinder heavy-duty diesel engine at various engine speed and load. Results showed that the maximum deviation of the two parameters were within 2 °CA and 1.5 °CA, respectively, which suggested that the proposed method had an adequate accuracy.

Solar Photovoltaic Investment Changes across China Regions Using a Spatial Shift-Share Analysis
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: regional analysis, solar photovoltaic investment, spatial shift-share analysis
Solar photovoltaic (PV) has become the fastest-growing new energy in China and one of the main contributors to China’s clean energy transition. From 2013 to 2019, China’s solar PV installed capacity grew from 15,890 MW to 204,180 MW, increasing by 11.85 times. To explore solar PV investment changes across China regions, we use spatial shift-share analysis model to decompose solar PV investment changes from 2013 to 2019 into four components: national energy investment growth effect (NEG), national energy investment structure effect (NES), neighbor−nation solar PV investment competitive effect (NNC), and region−neighbor solar PV investment competitive effect (RNC). Based on the decomposition results, we find that the value of NNC of most western provinces is negative for the entire period, while the NNC of most central and eastern provinces is in the middle and lower range. There is little difference in RNC among these regions. While comparing the influence caused by the four effects, NN... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy metrics, geothermal heat exchanger, PV, PV cell temperature, PVT, retrofitted PVT collector
Silicon based photovoltaic modules (PV) are a wide spread technology and are used for small and large PV power stations. At the moment, the most efficient method which can be used to improve the annual electrical energy production of PVs is solar tracking systems. However, solar tracking systems increase substantially the initial cost of the investment and insert maintenance costs. During the last few decades, alternative improving methods have been investigated. These methods are based on the reduction of the PV cell temperature, which adversely affects the power production. In the present study, a system with water based photovoltaic-thermal (PVT) collector paired with geothermal heat exchanger (GHE) is compared on the electrical energy basis with a conventional PV system. As the first approach on the topic, the aim is to find out in which extent the PVT-GHE system improves the electrical energy generation by cooling down the PV cells and which parameters influence the most its energ... Keywords: decoupling dual-loop control, doubly-fed induction generator, low voltage ride-through, static synchronous compensator, wind farm, wind turbine generator
Large-scale wind farms in commercial operations have demonstrated growing influence on the stability of an electricity network and the power quality thereof. Variations in the output power of large-scale wind farms cause voltage fluctuations in the corresponding electrical networks. To achieve low-voltage ride-through capability in a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) during a fault event, this study proposes a real-time reactive power control strategy for effective DFIG application and a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) for reactive power compensation. Mathematic models were developed for the DFIG and STATCOM, followed by the development of an indirect control scheme for the STATCOM based on decoupling dual-loop current control. Moreover, a real-world case study on a commercial wind farm comprising 23 DFIGs was conducted. The voltage regulation performance of the proposed reactive power control scheme against a fault event was also simulated. The simulation results revealed... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air source heat pump (ASHP), energy cost, load cover factor, load matching, net-zero energy house, photovoltaic system (PV), supply cover factor
Over the past 20 years, net-zero energy house (NZEH) construction costs have steadily decreased because of many reasons, such as technical progress, energy-saving design obligations, and dramatic cost reductions in renewable energy systems, especially solar power systems. Currently, the costs of NZEH are estimated to be about 5% higher than similar-sized houses. These additional costs are mainly for installing PV systems, which can be offset by energy saving costs. This study assessed energy performance and load matching through remote monitoring systems, and energy costs were analyzed for two-family houses. The two houses were all-electric houses and different in both size and location. A 6 kWp grid-connected PV system and 16 kW air source heat pump for space heating and domestic hot water were equally implemented. After data analysis, 100% of the energies were supplied through the PV system for 3 years, thus achieving net-zero energy. According to the Korean residential electricity t... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: currency hedging facility, currency risk, India, off-taker risk, payment security mechanism, project risks, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
This paper provides a summary of financial instruments to address two biggest risks to renewable projects in India. These risks include the following: first, off-taker (or counterparty) risk, which relates to payment delays by public-sector distribution companies to independent power producers, which then impact project level cash flows in the domestic currency; second, currency (or foreign exchange) risk related to currency fluctuations, which impact foreign investor level cash flows in foreign currencies. This paper then describes multiple solutions for each of these risks, using public funding mechanisms. For payment delays, the category of solutions is termed Payment Security Mechanisms; whereas, for currency fluctuations, the category of solutions is termed Foreign Exchange Hedging Facilities. The coverage in this paper shows the evolution of the solutions from theory to practice over time. These solutions are likely to be applicable to other developing countries.

Thermohydraulic Performance and Entropy Generation of a Triple-Pass Solar Air Heater with Three Inlets
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flow ratio, multiple pass heat exchanger, Pareto front, solar air heater, thermohydraulic efficiency
In this paper, a triple-pass solar air heater with three inlets is analytically investigated. The effects of airflow ratios of the second and third passes (ranging from 0 to 0.4), and the Reynolds number of the third pass (ranging from 8000 to 18,000) on the thermohydraulic efficiency and entropy generation are assessed. An absorber plate equipped with rectangular fins on both sides is used to enhance heat transfer. The air temperature change in the passes is represented by ordinary differential equations and solved by numerical integration. The results demonstrate that the effect of the third pass airflow ratio on the thermohydraulic efficiency and entropy generation is more significant than that of the second pass airflow ratio. The difference in air temperature through the collector shows an insignificant reduction, but the air pressure loss is only 50% compared with that of a traditional triple-pass solar air heater. Increasing the air flow ratios dramatically reduces entropy gener... [more]

Although both aggregate and per capita energy consumption in Bangladesh is increasing rapidly, its per capita consumption is still one of the lowest in the world. Bangladesh gradually shifted from petroleum-based energy to domestically sourced natural-gas-based energy sources, which are predicted to run out within next two decades. The present study first identified the determinants of aggregate commercial energy and its three major components of oil, natural gas, and coal demand for Bangladesh using a simultaneous equations framework on an annual database covering a period of 47 years (1972−2018). Next, the study forecast future demand for aggregate commercial energy and its three major components for the period of 2019−2038 under the business-as-usual and ongoing COVID-19 pandemic scenarios with some assumptions. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: metal-air battery, nanostructure manganese oxide, oxygen reduction and evolution reaction, sustainable energy technologies
The rise in energy consumption is largely driven by the growth of population. The supply of energy to meet that demand can be fulfilled by slowly introducing energy from renewable resources. The fluctuating nature of the renewable energy production (i.e., affected by weather such as wind, sun light, etc.), necessitates the increasing demand in developing electricity storage systems. Reliable energy storage system will also play immense roles to support activities related to the internet of things. In the past decades, metal-air batteries have attracted great attention and interest for their high theoretical capacity, environmental friendliness, and their low cost. However, one of the main challenges faced in metal-air batteries is the slow rate of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) that affects the charging and the discharging performance. Drawing on a set of building data retrievable from the BEAM Society and other sources, we carried out an analysis and found the building energy retrofitting, as well as the certification process, were unwelcomed in multi-owned residential buildings. The identified shortfall is put forward from the perspectives of transaction cost theory and agency theory. To prevent these, measures are being taken which are part of a broad programme referred to as sustainable energy development (SED). A special place among energy consumers is occupied by households, as access to energy is a fundamental factor affecting the quality of life. The aim of this paper is to look at and assess the current situation of the household sector in the EU energy market in the context of SED and to point out similarities and differences between EU countries. The analysis considers factors based on SED indicators: final energy consumption per capita, energy prices offered to households, and the share of renewable energy in household energy consumption.
