Changyou Zhang, Wenyu Zhang, Weina Luo, Xue Gao, Bingchen Zhang
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbon emissions, Generalized Divisia Index Method, influencing factors, logistics industry
Due to increased global carbon dioxide emissions, the greenhouse effect is being aggravated, which has attracted wide attention. China is committed to promoting the low-carbon development of all industries. This paper analyzed the influencing factors of carbon emissions in the Chinese logistics industry, so as to identify the key factors that influence carbon emissions. Based on the carbon emission data of China’s logistics industry in 2000−2019, this paper applied the carbon emission coefficients issued by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. For the first time, the Generalized Divisia Index Method was used to analyze the degree of influence of the factors on carbon emissions. This method considered more variables and their relationships. The results showed that (1) the carbon emissions of the logistics industry were increased by 3.22 times from 2000 to 2018, and showed negative growth for the first time in 2019; (2) the added value of the logistics industry is the most impo... March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: computer networks, correspondence analysis, decarbonization of the economy, historically and politically conditioned infrastructural growth poles, molinology, platforms for participation, prosumption, public administration digitalization, renewable energy sources, Warmia and Mazury Province
According to wikinomics, the decarbonization of the economy it is not possible without the involvement of people’s creativity and ingenuity under the form of prosumption channeled into the public administration. In order to achieve this goal, it is necessary to transform the existing websites of municipal offices into participation platforms that would become the local growth poles concentrating the economic forces operating in a given area. As Adam Smith, the father of economics, noted, synchronization between the economic goals of people and the preferences of local authorities are the main factors of development and the lack of them can create the highest degree of chaos in the economy. Consequently, the research began with defining prosumption and determining the degree of cooperation between society and the public administration sector in the digital sphere. Correspondence analysis was used to analyze the data collected from a survey. The issue of the quality of websites of munici... [more]

Keywords: homo p-n junction, HTL-free cells, lead-free, perovskite solar cell, SCAPS simulator
In this work, we report on the effect of substituting the active intrinsic i-layer on a conventional pin structure of lead-free perovskite solar cell (PSC) by a homo p-n junction, keeping the thickness of the active layer constant. It is expected that when the active i-layer is substituted by a p-n homo junction, one can increase the collection efficiency of the photo-generated electrons and holes due to the built-in electric field of the homo junction. The impact of the technological and physical device parameters on the performance parameters of the solar cell have been worked out. It was found that p-side thickness must be wider than the n-side, while its acceptor concentration should be slightly lower than the donor concentration of the n-side to achieve maximum efficiency. In addition, different absorber types, namely, i-absorber, n-absorber and p-absorber, are compared to the proposed pn-absorber, showing a performance-boosting effect when using the latter. Moreover, the proposed... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: air source heat pump, coefficient of performance (COP), evaporator, frost formation, transitional/cold heating season
The application of heat pumps in the heating systems of buildings in the cold or transitional season is becoming an increasingly common practice not only in Lithuania but in other countries as well. Due to the growing popularity of air-to-air or air-to-water heat pumps in the building sector, the problem of the evaporator heat exchanger freezing is also becoming more and more relevant. As the outdoor temperature drops, so does the heat pump’s coefficient of performance (COP) for heating. The freezing of the evaporator surface increases the energy consumption of the system, has a negative effect on heat exchange, distorts the normal operating cycle of the heat pump and the energy is wasted for defrosting processes. This article describes the experimental investigation of an air-to-water heat pump, presents the results obtained during the experiments and their interfaces. The experiments were carried out during the transitional/cold season. It was found that frost formation on the evapor... [more]
Thermographic Measurement of the Temperature of Reactive Power Compensation Capacitors
Krzysztof Dziarski, Arkadiusz Hulewicz, Grzegorz Dombek
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active power, angular emissivity, capacitor, conditions during thermographic temperature measurement, infrared radiation, reactive power, reflectance radiation, thermography
An excessive increase in reactive power consumption is unfavorable from the point of view of a power system. For this reason, devices compensating reactive power consumption are used. The capacitor is one such device. Capacitors must be tested regularly during their exploitation. One of the activities that should be performed is testing the degree of heating of the cells of a capacitor bank. Thermography can be used to perform such tests. This non-contact method has its limitations. Due to the angular emissivity and the change in the distance between the lens and the object under observation, the temperature measured with a thermographic camera may differ from the actual temperature. This phenomenon is visible on cylindrical capacitor cases. Consequently, depending on the location of the observation point on the capacitor case, the result of the thermographic temperature measurement may be different. To investigate this phenomenon, experimental work has been undertaken.

Mehmet Yesilbudak
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: diode circuit models, grey wolf optimizer, multi neighbors learning, parameter extraction, photovoltaic system
With the increase in the share of solar energy in the sustainable development, accurate parameter identification plays a significant role in designing optimal solar photovoltaic systems. For this purpose, this paper extensively implements and evaluates the grey wolf optimizer with a dimension learning-based hunting search strategy, an improved version of GWO named I-GWO, in the parameter extraction of photovoltaic cells and modules. According to the experimental results, the double-diode model leads to better fitness than the other diode models in representing the physical behaviors of both photovoltaic cells and photovoltaic modules. For further performance validation, firstly, the internal parameters extracted by the I-GWO algorithm and the corresponding output current data are compared with a number of widely-used parameter extraction methods in the literature. Then, the best goodness-of-fit results achieved by the I-GWO algorithm are evaluated considering many state-of-the-art meta... [more]

Rafał Moska, Krzysztof Labus, Piotr Kasza
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: EGS, enhanced geothermal systems, HDR, hot dry rock, hydraulic fracturing, rock mechanics
Hydraulic fracturing (HF) is a well-known stimulation method used to increase production from conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon reservoirs. In recent years, HF has been widely used in Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS). HF in EGS is used to create a geothermal collector in impermeable or poor-permeable hot rocks (HDR) at a depth formation. Artificially created fracture network in the collector allows for force the flow of technological fluid in a loop between at least two wells (injector and producer). Fluid heats up in the collector, then is pumped to the surface. Thermal energy is used to drive turbines generating electricity. This paper is a compilation of selected data from 10 major world’s EGS projects and provides an overview of the basic elements needed to design HF. Authors were focused on two types of data: geological, i.e., stratigraphy, lithology, target zone deposition depth and temperature; geophysical, i.e., the tectonic regime at the site, magnitudes of the prin... Keywords: DFIG, direct reactive power control, energy management system, hybrid energy storage system, smart microgrid, supercapacitor, three-level inverter
The present work addresses the modelling, control, and simulation of a microgrid integrated wind power system with Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) using a hybrid energy storage system. In order to improve the quality of the waveforms (voltages and currents) supplied to the grid, instead of a two level-inverter, the rotor of the DFIG is supplied using a three-level inverter. A new adaptive algorithm based on combined Direct Reactive Power Control (DRPC) and fuzzy logic controls techniques is applied to the proposed topology. In this work, two topologies are proposed. In the first one, the active power injected into the grid is smoothened by using an economical hybrid battery and supercapacitor energy storage system. However, in the second one, the excess wind energy is used to produce and store the hydrogen, and then a solid oxide fuel cell system (SOFC) is utilized to regenerate electricity by using the stored hydrogen when there is not enough wind energy. To avoid overcharging,... [more]
The Future Is Colorful—An Analysis of the CO2 Bow Wave and Why Green Hydrogen Cannot Do It Alone
Andreas von Döllen, YoungSeok Hwang, Stephan Schlüter
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bow wave, Carbon Dioxide, electrolyzer, Hydrogen, wind power
In both the private and public sectors, green hydrogen is treated as a promising alternative to fossil energy commodities. However, building up production capacities involves significant carbon production, especially when considering secondary infrastructure, e.g., renewable power sources. The amount of required capacity as well as the carbon production involved is calculated in this article. Using Germany as an example we show that the switch to purely green hydrogen involves significant bow waves in terms of carbon production as well as financial and resource demand. An economic model for an optimal decision is derived and—based on empirical estimates—calibrated. It shows that, even if green hydrogen is a competitive technology in the future, using alternatives like turquoise hydrogen or carbon capture and storage is necessary to significantly reduce or even avoid the mentioned bow waves.
Amplitude Recovery and Deconvolution of Chirp and Boomer Data for Marine Geology and Offshore Engineering

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Boomer, Chirp, deconvolution, envelope, gain recovery, inversion, marine survey, offshore engineering, sea floor characterization
The processing of Chirp data is limited by the usual recording of the signal envelope, which enhances its immediate visibility but prevents applying methods based on wave equations. This is normally not the case for Boomer data. However, both systems are monochannel instruments, which cannot estimate properly the propagation velocity of the signal in the rocks. In this paper, we present two theorems: the first one links the Chirp or Boomer source spectrum with an expected amplitude decay curve; the second one defines conditions for the deconvolution stability of the enveloped Boomer signal when the full waveform of the source signal is known. In this way, we can jointly process and integrate heterogeneous surveys including both data types. We validated the proposed algorithms by applying them to synthetic and real data. The presented tools can improve the image resolution and the characterization of geological formations in marine surveys by reflectivity anomalies, which are distorted... [more]
Determinants of Renewable Energy Production: Do Intellectual Property Rights Matter?
Wu-Shun Tee, Lee Chin, Abdul Samad Abdul-Rahim
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dynamic panel analysis, intellectual property right, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Climate change and finite energy supply issues have received substantial public attention in recent times. It has been argued that a sustainable energy supply associated with the promotion of clean energy is an important engine of growth, which calls for sound protection to reinforce investments in the renewable energy market. This paper examined the effect of intellectual property rights (IPRs) on renewable energy production using the dynamic panel generalised method of moments (GMM) technique on data from 59 sample countries. The empirical results provided strong evidence that IPRs significantly drive renewable energy production. Greater protection rights motivate renewable energy firms to increase energy production from renewable resources. Our findings further revealed that stronger protection propagates the deployment of renewable energy technologies that ultimately promote renewable energy production.

Keywords: fill fraction, near-infrared, optical diagnostics, pulse detonation engine (PDE), visible light
Fill fraction not only has a profound impact on the process of deflagration to detonation in pulsed detonation engine, but also affects the propulsion performance in both flight and ground tests. In this paper, a novel optical diagnostic method based on detonation exhaust radiation in visible and near-infrared region within 300−2600 nm is developed to determine the current working state in the gas−liquid two-phase pulsed detonation cycle. The results show that the radiation characteristic in each stage of detonation cycle is unique and can be a good indicator to infer the fill fraction. This is verified experimentally by comparison with the laser absorption spectroscopy method, which utilizes a DFB laser driven by ramp injection current to scan H2O transition of 1391.67 nm at a frequency of 20 kHz. Due to concentrated radiation intensity, time duration reaching accumulated radiant energy ratio of 50% in detonation status would be smaller than 1.2 ms, and detonation status would be easi... March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: driveability, energy path analysis, low-frequency, model-based engineering, powertrain
Vehicle driveability is one of the important attributes in range-extender electric vehicles due to the electric motor torque characteristics at low-speed events. Physical vehicle prototypes are typically used to validate and rectify vehicle driveability attributes. However, this can be expensive and require several design iterations. In this paper, a model-based energy method to assess vehicle driveability is presented based on high-fidelity 49 degree-of-freedom powertrain and vehicle systems. Multibody dynamic components were built according to their true centre of gravity relative to the vehicle datum to provide an accurate system interaction. The work covered a frequency of less than 20 Hz. The results consist of the components’ frequency domination, which was structured and examined to identify the low-frequency resonances sensitivity based on different operating parameters such as road surface coefficients. An energy path method was also implemented on the dominant component by de... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combustion engine, dynamic operating states, exhaust emissions, Real Driving Emissions
The paper describes the method of investigations of exhaust emissions from a combustion engine under operation classified in terms of its dynamic states. In this paper, the engine operating states are determined through the vehicle driving under actual traffic conditions in the RDE (Real Driving Emissions) test. Based on the recorded tracings of the vehicle velocity, the engine states were classified as static for the acceleration of the absolute value lower than the adopted classification limit. Besides, the authors analyzed the engine operating states for the positive as well as negative acceleration. For the adopted engine operating states, zero-dimensional characteristics of the emission intensity for individual exhaust components were determined (average value, coefficient of variation). The influence of the analyzed operating states on the emission of individual exhaust components was assessed. The greatest increase in the intensity of the emission of nitrogen oxides was observed... Keywords: biomass gasification, GoBiGas, high-temperature gas-cooled reactor, HTR-BiGas, HTR-PM, integrated energy systems, mass and energy balances, nuclear flexibility
Biomass gasification to produce burnable gas now attracts an increasing interest for production flexibility in the renewable energy system. However, the biomass gasification technology using dual fluidized bed which is most suitable for burnable gas production still encounters problems of low production efficiency and high production cost. Here, we proposed a large-scale biomass gasification system to combine dual fluidized bed and high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTR) for co-production of hydrogen and synthetic natural gas (SNG). The design of high-temperature gas-cooled reactor biomass gasification (HTR-BiGas) consists of one steam supply module to heat inlet steam of the gasifier by HTR and ten biomass gasification modules to co-produce 2000 MWth hydrogen and SNG by gasifying the unpretreated biomass. Software for calculating the mass and energy balances of biomass gasification was developed and validated by the experiment results on the Gothenburg biomass gasification plant. Th... [more]

The problem of urban logistics operations in the context of their impact on the environment has become the key challenge. Due to that, there has been a growing interest in increasing the use of alternative fuels, including electro-mobility. However, an important barrier to the utilisation of electric freight vehicles (EFVs) is their travel range and battery capacity. The paper is focused on the idea of EFV utilisation improvement by implementation of charging stations in unloading bays. First, the Authors analysed the efficiency of chosen vehicles during daily work. Next, the potential improvement of their travel range was analysed, considering the short-time charging processes carried out during delivery operations, using the charging systems provided in unloading bays. Moreover, the concept of wireless chargers utilisation was proposed as a challenge for future work. According to the analysis, utilisation of unloading bays equipped with short-time battery chargers could improve signi... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: multi-machine stability, participation analysis, PSS tuning, s-domain analysis, time-domain analysis
One of the main characteristics of power systems is keeping voltages within given limits, done by implementing fast automatic voltage regulators (AVR), which can raise generator voltage (i.e., excitation voltage) in a short time to ceiling voltage limits while simultaneously affecting the damping component of the synchronous generator electromagnetic torque. The efficient way to increase damping in the power system is to implement a power system stabilizer (PSS) in the excitation circuit of the synchronous generator. This paper proposes an enhanced algorithm for PSS tuning in the multimachine system. The algorithm is based on the analysis of system participation factors and the pole placement method while respecting the time domain behavior of the system after being subdued with a small disturbance. The observed time-domain outputs, namely active power, speed, and rotor angle of the synchronous generator, have been classified and validated with proposed weight functions based on the mi... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Biofuels, enzymatic hydrolysis, lignocellulosic biomass, simultaneous fermentation
The aim of this research is to examine the effect of lignocellulosic biomass detoxification on the efficiency of the methane fermentation process. Both for corn straw and rye straw, the methane yield was expressed per volume of fermentation medium and per mass of volatile solids (VS) added. Lignocellulosic biomass was subjected of thermo-chemical and enzymatic sequential pretreatments. It was found that methane yield was higher by 22% when using the detoxification process. In these variants, CH4 yield was 18.86 L/L for corn straw and 17.69 L/L for rye straw; while methane yield expressed per mass of VS added was 0.31 m3/kg VS for corn straw and 0.29 m3/kg VS for rye straw. The inclusion of a detoxification step in pretreatments of biomass lignocellulosic increases the degree of organic substance decomposition and enhances methane yield. The results show that a two-step pretreatment, alkaline/enzymatic with a detoxification process, is necessary for the effective generation of high meth... [more]

Keywords: nZEB, NZEB, residential sector, tropical climate, Zero Energy Buildings
In recent decades, European countries have developed concepts, definitions, and construction technologies for Zero Energy Building (ZEB) that are effective and correspond to their specific climates. Latin American countries are still trying to find adequate solutions which respond to the local climatic, cultural, social, technical, and economic context. As such, this paper aims to establish the basis of the minimum energy efficiency and the renewable threshold for the definition of ZEB in order to better understand the application in Panama, based on assessing the energy regulations implemented in Panama. To achieve this aim, a review concentrated on the concept-definition and implementation adopted by Latin American countries is presented first before the paper converges into defining a framework for application in Panama. Finally, a case-study-based theoretical framework proposing a ZEB definition for Panama is discussed. The results of this study showed a net primary energy balance,... [more]

Keywords: coefficient of performance, curve fitting, ground source, heat pump, sewage water source
The demand for district heating and cooling systems in block units with a heat pump that utilizes various unused energy sources for energy supply has been increasing. This study investigated experimentally the ground source heat pump (GSHP) and sewage water source heat pump (SWSHP) facilities used in block cooling and heating networks. Then, a heat pump performance prediction model was derived for utilization in future designs. Operational data for heating and cooling energy supply from an experimental site were investigated for the period between 2018 and 2020. During the cooling season, the coefficient of performance (COP) of the GSHP was approximately 4.1, and that of the SWSHP was approximately 2.9. The cooling performance of the SWSHP gradually decreased because of the fouling. The COP of the GSHP and SWSHP during the heating season was approximately 3.6 and 3.4, respectively. The results also demonstrated that, if fouling in the SWSHP can be prevented or reduced, the acquired COP... [more]

Keywords: Carnot battery, heat exchangers, heat pump, organic Rankine cycle, reversible condensation–evaporation, thermal imaging camera
The combined heat pump−organic Rankine cycle is a thermal−electrical storage concept which allows the reversible use of components in both operation modes (loading and unloading the storage). This saves in terms of investment costs but also creates challenges during design and operation. A heat exchanger is an expensive component destined to be used for the reversible purposes of a heat pump condenser and an organic Rankine cycle evaporator. In this study, the operation of such an apparatus was evaluated based on an analytical model, experimental data and thermal imaging. This study shows that the model can predict the filling of the apparatus distinguished by liquid, vapour and the two-phase region. The thermal imaging supports the model and gives the location of the regions. Connecting both methods, a valid statement about the current condition of the heat exchanger is possible. Due to very small pinch points, the apparatus is not efficiently used in the investigated modes. Extending... [more]

Keywords: balanced faults, fault ride through, hybrid AC/DC network, smart transformer, unbalanced faults
The Smart Transformer (ST) is being envisioned as the possible backbone of future distribution grids given the enhanced controllability it provides. Moreover, the ST offers DC-link connectivity, making it an attractive solution for the deployment of hybrid AC/DC distribution grids which offer important advantages for the deployment of Renewable Energy Sources, Energy Storage Systems (ESSs) and Electric Vehicles. However, compared to traditional low-frequency magnetic transformers, the ST is inherently more vulnerable to fault disturbances which may force the ST to disconnect in order to protect its power electronic converters, posing important challenges to the hybrid AC/DC grid connected to it. This paper proposes a Fault-Ride-Through (FRT) strategy suited for grid-tied ST with no locally available ESS, which exploits a dump-load and the sensitivity of the hybrid AC/DC distribution grid’s power to voltage and frequency to provide enhanced control to the ST in order to handle AC-side v...
