Experimental Research on Aftertreatment SCR Sizing Strategy for a Nonroad Mid−Range Diesel Engine
Lu Xie, Guozhang Jiang, Feng Qian
March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aftertreatment, Diesel engine, NH3 slip, NOx emissions, SCR sizing strategy
Urea-Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) is widely used to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. This paper presents a comprehensive experimental research work on aftertreatment emissions of NOx and ammonia (NH3) slip for three aftertreatment concepts by introducing the SCR sizing strategy on a 6-cylinder mid-range non-exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) diesel engine to meet China non-road Stage IV regulation limits. It can be observed that the three concepts could meet the regulation limits for NOx emissions and NH3 slip by selecting the appropriate length. There is little effect on emission results during a non-road transient cycle (NRTC) when the aftertreatment inlet/outlet with insulation and without insulation and the emission results on both strategies could meet non-road China Stage IV regulation limits. It is recommended to select Concept 2 which could meet regulation requirements considering multiple factors in the SCR sizing strategy. Substrate impact and NH3/NOx molar ratio (A... [more]

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: decoupling effort, LMDI, residential energy consumption, Tapio decoupling model, urban and rural Guangdong
Residential energy consumption (REC) is now the second largest energy sector in China. However, decoupling analysis of REC has not received enough attention. Here, we explore the decoupling relationship between REC and economic growth in urban and rural Guangdong from 2000 to 2017. First, we use the Tapio decoupling model to study the decoupling state. Then, key drivers affecting the decoupling were explored by combining the Tapio decoupling model with the Log-mean Divisa Index (LMDI) method. Finally, the decoupling efforts were evaluated by using the decoupling efforts model. The main results are as follows: (1) The decoupling state in urban regions was better than that in rural regions. Urban regions experienced weak decoupling (WD) in most years during 2000−2017, while expansive negative decoupling (END) mostly was seen in rural regions. (2) The per capita income effect was the most important driver inhibiting decoupling in Guangdong urban and rural regions. The energy intensity eff... [more]

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cold start-up, electrothermal film, multi-phase flow, proton exchange membrane, proton exchange membrane fuel cell
In order to realize the low temperature and rapid cold start-up of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell stack, a dynamic model containing 40 single proton exchange membrane fuel cells is established to estimate the melting time of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell stack as well as to analyze the melting process of the ice by using the obtained liquid−solid boundary. The methods of proton exchange membrane electric heating and electrothermal film heating are utilized to achieve cold start-up of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). The fluid simulation software fluent is used to simulate and analyze the process of melting ice. The solidification and melting model and multi-phase flow model are introduced. The pressure-implicit with splitting of operators algorithm is also adopted. The results show that both the proton exchange membrane electric heating technology and the electrothermal film heating method can achieve rapid cold start-up. The interior ice of the proton exc... March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: acoustic emission (AE), Coal, crack classification, damage, different depths, failure behavior, mining disturbance
The depth effect of coal mechanical behavior seriously affects the safety and efficiency of deep coal mining. To explore the differences in failure behavior and damage characteristics of coal masses at different depths during the coal mining process, based on the consideration of in situ stress environment, physical properties, and mining disturbance of coal seams, triaxial unloading experiments with acoustic emission (AE) monitoring were conducted on coal samples at four different depths taken from the Pingdingshan coal mine area. The results showed that the AE activity of deep coal was more concentrated, and the cumulative AE energy of coal increased with increasing depth. The cumulative AE energy of the 1050-m coal sample was 69 times that of the 300-m coal sample. The b value representing the microcrack scale decreased with increasing depth, and the rupture degree of deep coal increased. The cracking mode of coal was classified and the failure behavior was analyzed. The cumulative... [more]

Keywords: demand response, demand-side management, dispatch, flexibility, heat storage, renewable energy system, sector coupling, storage
In order to ensure security of supply in a future energy system with a high share of volatile electricity generation, flexibility technologies are needed. Industrial demand-side management ranks as one of the most efficient flexibility options. This paper analyses the effect of the integration of industrial demand-side management through the flexibilisation of aluminium electrolysis and other flexibilities of the electricity system and adjacent sectors. The additional flexibility options include electricity storage, heat storage in district heating networks, controlled charging of electric vehicles, and buffer storage in hydrogen electrolysis. The utilisation of the flexibilities is modelled in different settings with an increasing share of renewable energies, applying a dispatch model. This paper compares which contributions the different flexibilities can make to emission reduction, avoidance of curtailment, and reduction of fuel and CO2 costs, and which circumstances contribute to a... Ajibola Akinrinde, Andrew Swanson, Innocent Davidson
March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: de-energization, ferroresonance, phase plane diagram, Poincaré map, wind farm
The Ferranti effect could cause a rise in voltage along the cables on a wind farm if the circuit breakers at the receiving ends are switched off. Ferroresonance could also occur due to stuck pole(s) of the circuit breaker during de-energization. This paper reports on the temporary overvoltage (TOV) arising from the de-energization of the circuit breaker connecting the wind turbine to the feeder, the feeder breaker connecting an array of wind turbines to the point of common coupling (PCC), and the opening of the circuit breaker connecting the onshore to the offshore substation. Ferroresonance was characterized using a phase plane diagram and Poincaré map and was identified to be chaotic. The effect of the nonlinear characteristic of the wind transformer core on the ferroresonant overvoltage was examined and increased with the steepness of slope of the transformer curve. A damping resistor, shunt reactor and surge arrester were used to mitigate the overvoltage experienced during the ferr... [more]

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery energy storage systems, behind-the-meter scheme, rooftop PVs, solar power purchase agreement, time-of-use tariff
With a significant growth of rooftop photovoltaic systems (PVs) with battery energy storage systems (BESS) under the behind-the-meter scheme (BTMS), the solar power purchase agreement (SPPA) has been developed into one of the most attractive models. The SPPA is a scheme where the investors propose to directly sell electricity from rooftop PVs to the customers. The proposed rates are typically performed in terms of the discount rates on the time-of-use (TOU) tariff with demand charges. The operation modes of the BESS should also be designed in accordance with the proposed rates. Therefore, this paper proposes a methodology to design the discount rates and operation modes of the BESS which will minimize the electricity charges of the customers while maintaining the revenue of the investors under the SPPA and BTMS. The reverse power flow is considered as additional revenue to the investors. This paper also implements the proposed methodology with tariff structure in Thailand. The result s... [more]

Keywords: dynamic market, energy system analysis, flexible demand, Modelling, multi-energy system, self-sufficiency, smart energy system
The integration of renewable energy (RE) in energy systems can be approached in many ways depending on local possibilities. Evaluating this in the limited context of islands, this paper presents a multi-energy system transition to a 100% RE share in a two-folded technical analysis. The case study of Madeira Island using the EnergyPLAN modeling tool is used to show strengths and weaknesses of, on the one hand, electrifying all transport and heating demands on an island, while remaining demands are supplied with biomass, and, on the other hand, additional smart charging, vehicle-to-grid, thermal collectors and storages, as well as electrofuel production and storages. Technical results indicate the potentials and advantages of the second approach with 50% less biomass and no curtailment at 1−3% higher costs, compared to the first one with 7% of production curtailed. The technical analysis is supported by the institutional analysis that highlights the balancing needs through additional fle... [more]

Géremi Gilson Dranka, Paula Ferreira
March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Biofuels, CO2 emissions, demand-side flexibility, energyPLAN, Life-cycle assessment (LCA), scenario analysis
Shaping a secure and sustainable energy future may require a set of transformations in the global energy sector. Although several studies have recognized the importance of Electric Vehicles (EVs) for power systems, no large-scale studies have been performed to assess the impact of this technology in energy systems combining a diverse set of renewable energies for electricity production and biofuels in the transportation sector such as the case of Brazil. This research makes several noteworthy contributions to the current literature, including not only the evaluation of the main impacts of EVs’ penetration in a renewable electricity system but also a Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) that estimates the overall level of CO2 emissions resulted from the EVs integration. Findings of this study indicated a clear positive effect of increasing the share of EVs on reducing the overall level of CO2 emissions. This is, however, highly dependent on the share of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in the powe... [more]

Yue Hong, Mikael Eriksson, Cecilia Boström, Jianfei Pan, Yun Liu, Rafael Waters
March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: damping, linear generator, translator mass, wave energy converter
The damping effect, induced inside the linear generator, is a vital factor to improve the conversion efficiency of wave energy converters (WEC). As part of the mechanical design, the translator mass affects the damping force and eventually affects the performance of the WEC by converting wave energy into electricity. This paper proposes research on the damping effect coupled with translator mass regarding the generated power from WEC. Complicated influences from ocean wave climates along the west coast of Sweden are also included. This paper first compares three cases of translator mass with varied damping effects. A further investigation on coupling effects is performed using annual energy absorption under a series of sea states. Results suggest that a heavier translator may promote the damping effect and therefore improve the power production. However, the hinder effect is also observed and analyzed in specific cases. In this paper, the variations in the optimal damping coefficient a... [more]

Keywords: dielectric liquid mixtures, ECT, insulating liquids, insulation aging, insulation diagnostics, mineral oil, natural ester, retrofilling of power transformers, streaming electrification, synthetic ester
Natural and synthetic esters are liquids characterized by insulating properties, high flash point, and biodegradability. For this reason, they are more and more often used as an alternative to conventional mineral oils. Esters are used to fill new or operating transformers previously filled with mineral oil (retrofilling). It is technically unfeasible to completely remove mineral oil from a transformer. Its small residues create with esters a mixture with features significantly different from those of the base liquids. This article presents electrostatic charging tendency (ECT) tests for mixtures of fresh and aged Trafo EN mineral oil with Envirotemp FR3 natural ester from the retrofilling point of view. Under unfavorable conditions, the flow electrification phenomenon can damage the solid insulation in transformers with forced oil circulation. The ECT of the insulating liquids has been specified using the volume density of the qw charge. This parameter has been determined using the Ab... [more]

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: body-fitted grid generation, function estimation, inverse heat transfer, sensitivity analysis, steepest-descent method, timewise varying heat flux
A new sensitivity analysis scheme is presented based on explicit expressions for sensitivity coefficients to estimate timewise varying heat flux in heat conduction problems over irregular geometries using the transient readings of a single sensor. There is no prior information available on the functional form of the unknown heat flux; hence, the inverse problem is regarded as a function estimation problem and sensitivity and adjoint problems are involved in the solution of the inverse problem to recover the unknown heat flux. However, using the proposed sensitivity analysis scheme, one can compute all sensitivity coefficients explicitly in only one direct problem solution at each iteration without the need for solving the sensitivity and adjoint problems. In other words, the functional form of the unknown heat flux can be numerically estimated by using the parameter estimation approach. In this method, the irregular shape of heat-conducting body is meshed using the boundary-fitted grid... [more]

Keywords: efficiency, electric power systems, inverter, PV, Sustainability, transportation
Recently, electric vehicles (EVs) have become an increasingly important topic in the field of sustainable transportation research, alongside distributed generation, reactive power compensation, charging optimization, and control. The process of loading on existing power system infrastructures with increasing demand requires appropriate impact indices to be analyzed. This paper studies the impact of integrating electric vehicle charging stations (EVCSs) into a residential distribution network. An actual case study is modeled to acquire nodal voltages and feeder currents. The model obtains the optimal integration of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels with charging stations while considering reactive power compensation. The impact of EV integration for the case study results in two peaks, which show a 6.4% and 17% increase. Varying the inverter to the PV ratio from 1.1 to 2 decreases system losses by 34% to 41%. The type of charging is dependent on the maximum penetration of EVCSs that the ne... [more]

Keywords: borehole thermal energy storage, coupling, district heating and cooling, dynamic exergoeconomic method, Matlab, multi-objective optimization, TRNSYS
Borehole thermal energy storage (BTES) systems are a viable option to meet the increasing cooling demand and to increase the sustainability of low-temperature district heating and cooling (DHC) grids. They are able to store the rejected heat of cooling cycles on a seasonal basis and deliver this heat during the heating season. However, their efficient practical implementation requires a thorough analysis from technical, economic and environmental points of view. In this comparative study, a dynamic exergoeconomic assessment is adopted to evaluate various options for integrating such a storage system into 4th generation DHC grids in heating dominated regions. For this purpose, different layouts are modeled and parameterized. Multi-objective optimization is conducted, varying the most important design variables in order to maximize exergetic efficiency and to minimize levelized cost of energy (LCOE). A comparison of the optimal designs of the different layouts reveals that passive coolin... [more]

Keywords: activation energy, IT-SOFC, open circuit voltage, power density, tape casting process
The performances of Intermediate Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (IT-SOFC) anode-supported planar cells with a 10 cm2 active surface were studied versus the combination of cathode thickness and the presence of an Anode Functional Layer (AFL). The temperature range was 500 to 650 °C, and Gd0.1Ce0.9O2−x (GDC) was used as the electrolyte material, Ni-GDC as the anode material, and La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3−d (LSCF48) as the cathode material. The power density, conductivity, and activation energy of different samples were determined in order to investigate the influence of the cathode thickness and AFL on the performance. These results showed an improvement in the performances when the AFL was not present. The maximum power density reached 370 mW·cm−2 at 650 °C for a sample with a cathode thickness of 50 µm and an electrolyte layer that was 20 µm thick. Moreover, it was highlighted that a thinner cathode layer reduced the power density of the cell.

Keywords: crashworthiness, elasto-plasticity, failure criterion, finite element model, orthotropy, polyethylene separator, safety
In the present study, the mechanical properties of a dry-processed polyethylene (PE) separator are investigated in terms of deformation and failure limits. The focus is set on the anisotropic mechanical behavior of this material. A deeper understanding of the damage mechanism is important for further safety and crashworthiness investigations and predictions of damage before failure. It has been found that separator integrity is one of the crucial parts in preventing internal short circuit and thermal runaway in lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. Based on uniaxial tensile tests with local strain measurement, a novel failure criterion for finite element analysis (FEA), using the explicit FEA solver Altair Radioss, has been developed to predict the effect of high mechanical loads with respect to triaxiality, large plastic strain and orthotropy. Finally, a simulation model of a PE separator was developed combining the novel failure criterion with Hill’s yield surface and a Swift−Voce hardenin... [more]

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biodiesel, efficient engines, exhaust manifold, fuel injection, intake manifold, modifications
The ever-increasing demand for transport is sustained by internal combustion (IC) engines. The demand for transport energy is large and continuously increasing across the globe. Though there are few alternative options emerging that may eliminate the IC engine, they are in a developing stage, meaning the burden of transportation has to be borne by IC engines until at least the near future. Hence, IC engines continue to be the prime mechanism to sustain transportation in general. However, the scarcity of fossil fuels and its rising prices have forced nations to look for alternate fuels. Biodiesel has been emerged as the replacement of diesel as fuel for diesel engines. The use of biodiesel in the existing diesel engine is not that efficient when it is compared with diesel run engine. Therefore, the biodiesel engine must be suitably improved in its design and developments pertaining to the intake manifold, fuel injection system, combustion chamber and exhaust manifold to get the maximum... Keywords: electric vehicles, load profile, peak-load shifting, private charging piles, scenario analysis, smart charging
Electric vehicles (EVs) and charging piles have been growing rapidly in China in the last five years. Private charging piles are widely adopted in major cities and have partly changed the charging behaviors of EV users. Based on the charging data of EVs in Hefei, China, this study aims to assess the impacts of increasing private charging piles and smart charging application on EVs’ charging load profiles. The charging load profiles of three types of charging piles which are public, employee-shared, and private ones, are simulated in three different scenarios. The results of scenario simulation indicate that the increase in EVs will reinforce the peak value of the total power load, while increasing private charging piles and the participation rate of smart charging piles will have peak-load shifting effects on the power load on weekdays. Specifically, 12% of the charging load will be shifted from public piles to private ones if the ratio of EVs and private piles increases from 5:3 to 5:... [more]

Keywords: EUA, European Union emission trading system (EU ETS), hedging ratio, optimal weight, spillover, sudden change
In recent years, there has been growing interest in the market interactions between carbon (or clean/renewable energy) and traditional fossil energy such as coal and oil, but few studies have discussed their dynamic volatility spillover and time-varying correlation. To investigate these issues, we used the weekly data of the European Union carbon emission allowance (EUA) futures, biofuel and Brent oil prices from 25 October 2009 to 5 July 2020. We employed the vector autoregressive-generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (VAR-GARCH) model with the Baba, Engle, Kraft and Krone (BEKK) specification. Our main findings are summarized as follows: First, we identified the sudden changes and the volatility persistence in the EUA, biofuel, and Brent oil markets, and also confirmed that the volatility of the markets has changed significantly over time. Second, we found a weak volatility spillover effect among the three markets, and a strong spillover effect between the EUA and... [more]

Keywords: allothermal reactor, Biomass, steam gasification
Investigations were performed in relation to the thermal gasification of wood granulate using steam in an allothermal reactor with electric heaters. They studied the impact of the temperature inside the reactor and the steam flow rate on the percentage shares of H2, CH4, CO, and CO2 in synthesis gas and on the calorific value of syngas. The tests were conducted at temperatures inside the reactor equal to 750, 800, and 850 °C and with a steam flow rate equal to 10.0, 15.0, and 20.0 kg∙h−1. The intensity of gasified biomass was 20 kg∙h−1. A significant impact of the temperature on the percentages of all the components of synthesis gas and a significant impact of the steam flow rate on the content of hydrogen and carbon dioxide in syngas were found. The highest percentage of hydrogen obtained was 43.3%. The calorific value of the gas depended significantly on the temperature inside the reactor and the correlation between the temperature and the steam flow rate. Its maximum value was 13.3... [more]
Petrographic Characteristics of Coal Gasification and Combustion by-Products from High Volatile Bituminous Coal

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bottom ash, char, Coal, fly ash, gasification
The coal was gasified in a fluidized bed reactor with CO2 as a gasifying agent at 889−980 °C. The coal and gasification residue produced during gasification was burned at temperatures up to 900 °C. The petrographic analysis, gasification residues, and fly and bottom ash resulting from the combustion of coal and chars showed the efficiency of the gasification and combustion processes. The gasification residue primarily comprised inertoids and crassinetwork, which accounted for 60% of the sample. The analysis of the petrographic composition of fly ash revealed that the fly ash formed during the combustion of gasification residue had a higher mineral content. The fly ash from the combustion of gasification products contained significantly less unburned coal compared to that from coal. The samples of the bottom ash from coal combustion were composed of approximately 25% organic matter, most of which was chars. The bottom ash formed from the combustion of coal gasification products was comp... [more]

Keywords: cluster analysis, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, TOPSIS method, wind energy development
In this paper, the development of the wind energy sector in 28 European Union countries in 2017 is described. By means of taxonomic methods—i.e., Ward’s method and the Wroclaw taxonomic methods—clusters of countries similar in terms of their potential and level of development of the wind energy sector in the EU are distinguished. The main purpose of the paper is to separate and cluster EU countries due to the current development potential of the wind energy sector and determinants stimulating the development of this sector. By means of the ranking methods of linear ordering (Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution—TOPSIS method), a ranking of EU countries that defines their position in the development of this very important wind energy sector was determined. The results show that the research hypothesis of a great diversity of EU countries considering the development potential of the wind energy sector is justified. The countries of the former European Union,... [more]

Keywords: arc-length parameterization, bifurcation point, continuation power flow, DER hosting capacity, PV curve, ramp rate of generator
Recently, the demand for electricity has been increasing worldwide. Thus, more attention has been paid to renewable energy. There are acceptable limits during the integration of renewable energy into distribution systems because there are many effects of integrating renewable energy. Unlike previous studies that have estimated the distributed energy resource (DER) hosting capacity using the standard high voltage and probability approach, in this study, we propose an algorithm to estimate the DER hosting capacity by considering DER outages due to abrupt disturbances or uncertainties based on the generator ramp rate and voltage stability, which involves analysis of the low-voltage aspects. Furthermore, this method does not involve a complicated process or need large amounts of data to estimate the DER hosting capacity because it requires only minimum data for power flow. The proposed algorithm was applied to the IEEE-33 radial distribution system. According to the DER capacity, a voltage... [more]

Keywords: demand response, electric vehicle, smart charging, time-of-use, variable renewable sources, virtual power plant
An increase in variable renewable energy sources and soaring electricity demand at peak hours undermines the efficiency and reliability of the power supply. Conventional supply-side solutions, such as additional gas turbine plants and energy storage systems, can help mitigate these problems; however, they are not cost-effective. This study highlights the potential value of electric vehicle demand response programs by analyzing three separate scenarios: electric vehicle charging based on a time-of-use tariff, smart charging controlled by an aggregator through virtual power plant networks, and smart control with vehicle-to-grid capability. The three programs are analyzed based on the stochastic form of a power system optimization model under two hypothetical power system environments in Jeju Island, Korea: one with a low share of variable renewable energy in 2019 and the other with a high share in 2030. The results show that the cost saving realized by the electric vehicle demand respons... [more]
