March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbonate reservoirs, enhanced heavy oil recovery, heat resistance, salinity tolerance, surfactant
In view of the difficulty of producing heavy oil from carbonate reservoirs, the surfactant SDY-1 was synthesized by homogeneous solution polymerization with a homogeneous solution polymerization technique using aliphatic amine polyoxyethylene ether (PAEn) H(OCH2CH2)nNR(CH2CH2O)nH as the raw material, epichlorohydrin as the reaction intermediate, tetrabutylammonium bromide and pentamethyldivinyltriamine as the promoters, and alkylphenol as the catalyst. Based on the analysis of reservoir fluid and rock properties, the performance of the surfactant SDY-1 was evaluated in terms of its heat resistance, its salinity tolerance, its ability to change the heavy oil−water interfacial tension and rock wettability and its oil washing efficiency. The results show that when the salinity of the formation water is 2.23 × 105 mg/L, the addition of surfactant SDY-1 can lower the super-heavy oil−water interfacial tension with an asphaltene concentration of 30.19 wt.%, which is aged at a temperature of 1... Long-Term Performance Measurement and Analysis of a Small-Scale Ground Source Heat Pump System
Hao Liu, Hongyi Zhang, Saqib Javed
March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ground heat exchanger, ground source heat pumps, hot water, seasonal performance factors, space heating, system performance
Recent data suggest that heat pumps, despite having the potential to cover over 90% of the global space and water heating demands, only provide less than 5% of global heating. Heat pumps, in general, and ground source heat pumps, specifically, offer significant potential for energy savings and carbon emissions reduction in buildings. The realization of these potential benefits, however, requires proper design, installation, and operation of the entire heat pump system. This paper presents the performance analysis of a Swedish ground source heat pump system providing space heating and hot water to a sports clubhouse. The installation has been carefully instrumented to enable full characterization of the whole system including auxiliary components such as circulation pumps and supplementary heating. Seasonal performance factors, calculated for monthly and annual periods using high-quality, high-resolution measurement data collected over three years of system operation, have been reported... Bilal Ahmad Bhatti, Robert Broadwater, Murat Dilek
March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: graph trace analysis, integrated system model, power system computing, power system stability, power transmission and distribution
The use of a Graph Trace Analysis (GTA)-based power flow for analyzing the voltage stability of integrated Transmission and Distribution (T&D) networks is discussed in the context of distributed Photovoltaic (PV) generation. The voltage stability of lines and the load carrying capability of buses is analyzed at various PV penetration levels. It is shown that as the PV generation levels increase, an increase in the steady state voltage stability of the system is observed. Moreover, within certain regions of stability margin changes, changes in voltage stability margins of transmission lines are shown to be linearly related to changes in the loading of the lines. Two case studies are presented, where one case study involves a model with eight voltage levels and 784,000 nodes. In one case study, a voltage-stability heat map is used to demonstrate the identification of weak lines and buses.

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: pump working as turbine (PAT), self-excited induction generator (SEIG), transient behavior
The use of pumps working as turbines (PATs) is a sustainable technical measure that contributes to the improvement of energy efficiency in water systems. However, its performance analysis in off-grid recovery systems is a complex task that must consider both hydraulic (PAT) and electrical machines (typically a self-excited induction generator-SEIG). Aside from several kinds of research that analyze the PAT-SEIG behavior under steady-state constant hydraulic and electrical conditions, this research focuses on the analysis of PAT-SEIG transient regimes, by analyzing their variation when a sudden change occurs in the hydraulic or electrical components. Analytical models were developed to represent the operation of SEIG, PAT, and the PAT-SEIG coupled system. Hydraulic and electromechanical experimental tests validated these models. An excellent fit was obtained when analytical and experimental values were compared. With these models, the impact on the operation of the PAT-SEIG system was e... [more]

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: exhaust air heat pump, heating system, hydrated magnesium carbonate, silica gel, Simulation, thermal energy storage
In this paper, a simulations model of a seasonal thermal energy storage (TES) reactor integrated into a house heating system is presented. The water vapour chemisorbing reactor contains a composite material composed of silica gel and hydrated magnesium carbonate (nesquehonite, MgCO3·3H2O) that can be produced by a carbon capture and storage by mineralisation process. The performance of the TES to supply winter heat instead of electrical resistance heat is analysed. Dividing the reactor into a few units (connected in series) for better heat output and storage capacity as developed by the authors is compared to one unit or parallel unit solutions. The heating system components are an exhaust air heat pump, solar collectors and a heat recovery ventilation unit (HRV). The TES is used as heat source during colder periods, which implies improved efficiency and coefficient of performance (COP). Around 70% of electrical resistance heat, assisting an exhaust air heat pump during cold periods, c... [more]

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distribution lines, earth admittance, earth impedance, electromagnetic transients, frequency-dependent soil, high frequency, modal transformation matrices, wave propagation
The calculation of the influence of the imperfect earth on overhead conductors is an important issue in power system analysis. Rigorous solutions contain infinite integrals; thus, due to their complex form, different simplified closed-form expressions have been proposed in the literature. This paper presents a detailed analysis of the effect of different closed-form expressions on the investigation of the wave propagation of distribution overhead lines (OHLs). A sensitivity analysis is applied to determine the most important properties influencing the calculation of the OHL parameters. The accuracy of several closed-form earth impedance models is evaluated as well as the influence of the displacement current and imperfect earth on the shunt admittance, which are further employed in the calculation of the propagation characteristics of OHLs. The frequency-dependence of the soil electrical properties, as well as the application of different modal decomposition algorithms, are also invest... [more]

Keywords: cost, forklift, hybrid electric vehicle, lithium-ion battery, supercapacitor, VDI drive cycle, volume, weight
Nowadays, electric vehicles are one of the main topics in the new industrial revolution, called Industry 4.0. The transport and logistic solutions based on E-mobility, such as handling machines, are increasing in factories. Thus, electric forklifts are mostly used because no greenhouse gas is emitted when operating. However, they are usually equipped with lead-acid batteries which present bad performances and long charging time. Therefore, combining high-energy density lithium-ion batteries and high-power density supercapacitors as a hybrid energy storage system results in almost optimal performances and improves battery lifespan. The suggested solution is well suited for forklifts which continuously start, stop, lift up and lower down heavy loads. This paper presents the sizing of a lithium-ion battery/supercapacitor hybrid energy storage system for a forklift vehicle, using the normalized Verein Deutscher Ingenieure (VDI) drive cycle. To evaluate the performance of the lithium-ion ba... [more]

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: catalyst, formic acid, hydrocracking, hydrogen donor, nickel, tar, zeolite
Specific features of the catalytic tar cracking in the presence of formic acid, BEA zeolite and 8% Ni-2.5% Mo/Sibunit catalyst were studied at 350 °C and 1.0 MPa pressure. The obtained results evidenced that formic acid can be used as a hydrogen donor during catalytic reactions. The formic acid addition made it possible to perform efficient hydrocracking of heavy feed such as tar. It was found that both the tar conversion and selectivity to light (gasoline-diesel) fractions grew in the sequence: tar < (tar - formic acid) < (tar - formic acid - BEA zeolite) < (tar - formic acid - BEA zeolite - 8% Ni-2.5% Mo/Sibunit catalyst). Furthermore, significantly lower concentrations of impurities containing sulfur and nitrogen were observed for the (tar - formic acid - BEA zeolite - 8% Ni-2.5% Mo/Sibunit catalyst) system. For example, the sulfur and nitrogen concentrations in the tar precursor were 1.50% and 0.86%, respectively. Meanwhile, their concentrations in the liquid products afte... [more]

Keywords: energy management system, PV forecasting, rule-based control, solar microgrid
The use of renewable energy sources, and in particular photovoltaics, can effectively reduce the supply of household energy from the main grid, contributing to a more sustainable community. In this paper, several energy management strategies were applied to an existing microgrid with photovoltaic (PV) production and battery storage in view to supply in electricity a building and an electric vehicle located in Ajaccio, France. The purpose was to determine how the choice of a management strategy can impact the cost and the energy share in the microgrid, using the actual electricity tariff in France as well as an over-cost due to the island situation. For some strategies, a forecasting tool was introduced and its influence on the performances of the microgrid was discussed. It appears that the performance of the strategy increased with its complexity and the use of PV forecasting.

Keywords: BIPV, BIPV integration, building-integrated photovoltaics, hidden coloured BIPV module, photovoltaic, PV
Energy flexibility in buildings is gaining momentum with the introduction of new European directives that enable buildings to manage their own energy demand and production, by storing, consuming or selling electricity according to their need. The transition towards a low-carbon energy system, through the promotion of on-site energy production and enhancement of self-consumption, can be supported by building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) technologies. This paper investigates the aesthetic and technological integration of hidden coloured PV modules in architecturally sensitive areas that seem to be the best possibility to favour a balance between conservation and energy issues. First, a multidisciplinary methodology for evaluating the aesthetic and technical integration of PV systems in architecturally sensitive area is proposed, referring to the technologies available on the market. Second, the experimental characterisation of the technical performance specific BIPV modules and their... [more]

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electricity supply agreement, harmonic distortion, harmonic limit, harmonic measurement, harmonic monitoring
Most power utilities within Southern Africa are faced with the challenges of harmonic distortion due to the high penetration of renewable energy sources (RES) and the use of electronic devices. There is an excessive total harmonic distortion (THD) measured at the point of common coupling (PCC). In this paper, a proposed harmonic monitoring system for large power users (LPUs) is developed. This proposed system considers harmonic limits of the individual and THD of the customers allowed injecting into the network, which should be part of the contractual electricity supply agreement (ESA). Hence, it will enable the monitoring of harmonic distortion to be smooth by determining whether the customer has passed or failed compliance for individual harmonic order and the THD of the voltage. The measurements of harmonic distortion are done using the Unipower power quality (PQ) analyzers that are connected at different points within the industrial network. Measurements of harmonic distortion of a... [more]

Keywords: pitch mechanism, pitch-to-feather, pitch-to-stall, structural loads
This article investigates the impact of the pitch-to-stall and pitch-to-feather control concepts on horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWTs) with different blade designs. Pitch-to-feather control is widely used to limit the power output of wind turbines in high wind speed conditions. However, stall control has not been taken forward in the industry because of the low predictability of stalled rotor aerodynamics. Despite this drawback, this article investigates the possible advantages of this control concept when compared to pitch-to-feather control with an emphasis on the control performance and its impact on the pitch mechanism and structural loads. In this study, three HAWTs with different blade designs, i.e., untwisted, stall-regulated, and pitch-regulated blades, are investigated. The control system is validated in both uniform and turbulent wind speed. The results show that pitch-to-stall control enhances the constant power control for wind turbines with untwisted and stall-regulated... [more]

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery, Controller Area Network (CAN), hybrid electrical system, Microchip DSP, power management, supercapacitors
Power management of a one-converter parallel structure with battery and supercapacitor is addressed in this paper. The controller is implemented on a DSP from a Microchip and uses a Controller Area Network (CAN) bus communication for data exchange. However, the low data transmission rate of the CAN bus data impacts the performances of regular power management strategies. This paper details an initial strategy with a charge sustaining mode for an application coupling a battery with supercapacitors, in which low performances have been witnessed due to the high sampling time of the CAN bus data. Therefore, a new strategy is proposed to tackle the sample time issue based on a depleting mode. Simulation and experimental results with a dsPIC33EP512MU810 DSP based on a 10 kW hybrid system proves the feasibility of the proposed approach.

Keywords: battery system, economy, electric cars charging, Energy Efficiency, photovoltaic systems, renewable energy sources
Sales of electric cars and vehicles (EVs) have recently been showing a rapidly growing trend. In connection with rising electricity prices as well as social pressure on the environmental impacts of electromobility, there is also increasing interest of EV owners in the ecological source of electricity. The largest group of owners of EVs are residents of family houses, so, logically, they focus their attention on the possibility of using photovoltaic (PV) charging systems for EV charging. The design of the PV system for supporting EV charging is problematic due to several input parameters in the calculation of energy needs and due to the inconsistencies of electricity generation with normal electric vehicle (EV) charging time. While the PV system produces electricity during the day, family homeowners require charging EVs mainly at night. This requires batteries as part of a PV system. The optimal design of the PV of the battery system must take into account the real consumption of EV, th... [more]

Keywords: Adsorption, antimony, brandholzite-like structure, brucite
This study has investigated the selective immobilization of antimony using the brucite (magnesium hydroxide)-rich precipitate (BP) collected from a hypochlorous storage tank in a nuclear power plant of South Korea. The energy dispersive X-ray and X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that the BP mainly consisted of magnesium (72.5%) and its dominant mineral phase was brucite (Mg(OH)2). Therefore, brandholzite (Mg[Sb(OH)6]2·6H2O) was newly formed through the surface-induced precipitation during the adsorption of antimony using the BP. The adsorbed amount of antimony increased with decreasing pH values because of the increased positive surface charge of the BP (pHpzc = 9.6). The maximum adsorption capacity (Qmax) of BP, calculated by Langmuir adsorption isotherm, was 11.02 mg/g. The presence of competitive anions did not significantly affect the adsorption of antimony toward the BP due to its high selectivity. These results suggest that the facile utilization of the BP as a low-cost adsorb... [more]

Keywords: building envelope performance, dry exterior insulation system, energy performance, thermal bridge, truss insulation frame
Heat loss and gain through opaque envelopes of buildings are major factors that affect the overall cooling and heating loads in buildings. The government has enforced regulations to strengthen the thermal transmittance requirement level as a major means of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the building sector. In addition, the thermal bridge is considered to be one of the major factors in heating load of buildings. In this study, truss-form wire frame was developed in order to minimize thermal bridge of steel mullion in exterior insulation system. In the case of thermal transmittance test for specimen of 0.145 W/m2 K as design value, the value of the steel pipe was 0.190 W/m2 K and the value of the truss-form wire frame was 0.150 W/m2 K, respectively. This means the other is much smaller than the one in thermal bridge. For four cases, annual energy performance analysis was calculated using Passive House Planning Package (PHPP)—ideal condition without thermal bridge, steel pipe mulli... [more]

Keywords: error correction model, ethylene market, shale gas, time-varying cointegration
The rise of shale resources in the United States is changing the petrochemical industries. Ethylene, the first building block of petrochemical products, is becoming the first target to be hit by the shale boom, and its shifting price dynamics needs to be explored. This study analyzes the transition of ethylene prices from crude oil to natural gas (vertical price dynamics) and investigates widening gaps among regional ethylene prices (horizontal price dynamics). To do this, we detect structural changes in cointegrating relationships and derive time-varying cointegration equations. In addition, for the long- and short-run dynamics, this study established and estimated an error correction model (ECM), with controlling, time-varying cointegrations. This study develops econometric studies by applying time-varying cointegration to nonenergy uses of fossil fuels. Thereby, our results discover that the feedstock structure of US ethylene is moving from crude oil to natural gas and that the como... [more]

Keywords: entropy method, polynomial approximation, reliability, stochastic differential equation, Weibull distribution
Maintenance decision analysis is necessary to ensure the safe and stable operation of wind turbine equipment. To address gearboxes with a high failure rate in wind turbines, this paper establishes a new stochastic differential equation model of gearbox state transition to maximize the utilization of gearboxes. This model divides the state of the gearbox into two parts: internal degradation and external random interference. Weibull distribution and polynomial approximation were used to construct the internal degradation model of the gearbox. The external random interference is simulated by Brownian motion. On the basis of the analysis of monitoring data, the parameters of the gearbox state model were solved using the Newton−Raphson iterative method and entropy method. The state change of the gearbox was simulated in MATLAB, and the residual value between the predicted state and the real state was calculated. Compared with the state transformation model constructed by the traditional ord... [more]

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DFIG, over-frequency disturbances, system frequency response, wind power
Doubly-fed induction generators (DFIGs) are capable of boosting frequency response capability while preventing the rotor speed from stalling during under-frequency disturbances, by employing variable droop characteristics. However, the frequency response capability during over-frequency disturbances is shortened because the potential for storing the kinetic energy is inversely proportional to the variable droop characteristics used for under-frequency disturbances. This paper designs a frequency control method of a DFIG to boost the frequency response capability during over-frequency disturbances while preserving the frequency response capability during under-frequency disturbances, by employing different variable droop characteristics. The effectiveness of the proposed frequency control method is investigated in a test system. The investigation results under five scenarios with different load variations, wind power penetrations and wind conditions clearly demonstrate that the proposed... [more]

Keywords: kinetics, pyrolysis, rapeseed oil press cake, steam gasification, synthesis gas, TGA-MS analysis
A deoiled rapeseed press cake (RPC) was pyrolyzed by heating at a slow heating rate to 1000 °C in a fixed bed reactor, and the produced char was then gasified to obtain data for the kinetic modeling of the process. The gasification experiments were performed in a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) under steam/argon mixtures at different temperatures (750, 800 and 850 °C) and steam mole fractions (0.17 and 0.45). The three most commonly used gas-solid kinetic models, the random pore model, the volumetric model and the shrinking core model were used to describe the conversion of char during steam gasification. The objective of the kinetic study was to determine the kinetic parameters and to assess the ability of the models to predict the RPC conversion during steam gasification. A TGA-MS analysis was applied to assess the composition of the product gas. The main steam gasification product of the RPC was hydrogen (approximately 60 mol % of the total product). The volumetric model was able t... [more]

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dynamic programming, electric vehicle autonomy, energy management, HVAC, thermal comfort
The HVAC system represents the main auxiliary load in battery-powered electric vehicles (BEVs) and requires efficient control approaches that balance energy saving and thermal comfort. On the one hand, passengers always demand more comfort, but on the other hand the HVAC system consumption strongly impacts the vehicle’s driving range, which constitutes a major concern in BEVs. In this paper, a thermal comfort management approach that optimizes the thermal comfort while preserving the driving range during a trip is proposed. The electric vehicle is first modeled together with the HVAC and the passengers’ thermo-physiological behavior. Then, the thermal comfort management issue is formulated as an optimization problem solved by dynamic programing. Two representative test-cases of hot climates and traffic situations are simulated. In the first one, the energetic cost and ratio of improved comfort is quantified for different meteorological and traffic conditions. The second one highlights... [more]

Keywords: crude oil price fluctuation, evolution characteristics, price influence mechanism
The uncertainty in the evolution of crude oil price fluctuation has a significant impact on economic stability. Based on the decomposition of crude oil price fluctuation by the state-space model, this paper studies the fluctuation trend of crude oil prices and its causes. The nonlinearity autoregressive distribute lag approach (NARDL) model is used to capture the influence mechanism characteristics of crude oil prices at different positions and different fluctuation trends. An event study model with dummy variables is constructed to compare the effects of different types of events on crude oil price fluctuations. The empirical results indicate that the fluctuation of crude oil prices tends to strengthen on the whole, and there is a remarkable correlation between this trend and the influencing mechanism of crude oil price, namely, the fluctuation source structure. The influence mechanism of crude oil price fluctuation is asymmetric when the crude oil price is at different positions and... [more]
