Sylvia Jenčová, Róbert Štefko, Petra Vašaničová
March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrical engineering industry, financial health, logistic regression, scoring model, Slovakia
The aim of this paper is to estimate the probability of bankruptcy of the companies from the Slovak electrical engineering industry based on data obtained from financial statements. Parameters of the predictive model were estimated using binary logistic regression. This model is able to predict the probability of a company’s bankruptcy based on values of significant explanatory variables (accounts payable turnover ratio (APTR), return on sales (ROS), quick ratio (QR), financial leverage (FL), net working capital/assets (NWC/A)). The model is constructed using the financial data of a large sample of electrical engineering companies from 2017. Resulting estimated odds ratios show that, in the electrical engineering industry, ROS, QR, and NWC/A significantly reduce the likelihood of bankruptcy. In other words, if these financial indicators increase, the probability of bankruptcy decreases. Our results are also applicable to other industries connected with industrial production, especially... [more]
Effect of Principal Stress Field on the Development of Plastic Zone ahead of the Gateroad

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: coal and gas outbursts, expansion, plastic zone, principal stress field, upward mining
The distribution of a plastic zone ahead of a gateroad plays a significant role in maintaining the long-term stability of mining spaces. For a long time, the principal stress field such as the values, the direction, etc. have been observed to have impacts on plastic zone development, but has not been looked into deeply and systematically. To this end, the influence of principal stress field including the maximum principal stress (P1), the angle between the P1 direction and the Z-axis (α), the minimum principal stress (P3), and the ratio of maximum principal stress to minimum principal stress (P1/P3) on the expansion of the plastic zone ahead of the gateroad is investigated by the (Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua) FLAC3D models. The results show that: (1) The plastic zone volume increases first and then decreases with the increase of α, and the direction of butterfly-shaped plastic zone ahead of gateroad is rotating with the evolution of α. (2) The plastic zone volume ahead of exca... [more]
Oil as Hedge, Safe-Haven, and Diversifier for Conventional Currencies

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: crude oil, currency, hedge, safe haven
The research investigates the safe-haven, hedging, and diversification function of crude oil for conventional currencies, among which five are major oil exporters, and six are major oil importers. In order to model time-varying dynamic correlations between crude oil and currencies, the study uses the Asymmetric-DCC model. The findings highlight low or negative correlations, especially during the crisis period. Next, we employ a quantile based regression framework and conclude distinct safe-haven and hedge functions of oil for major currencies. We provide additional evidence on the safe-haven, hedging, and diversification function of crude oil using the cross-quantilogram framework. The findings of out of sample analysis illustrate that the hedging effectiveness of oil is greater for oil-exporting countries. In addition, the conditional diversification benefit of oil is higher in the lower quantiles, i.e., when both foreign exchange and oil markets are in a bearish state. Finally, impli... [more]

Keywords: bushings, monitoring, partial discharges, power transformers, test tap
Failures in power transformers are one of the most serious occurrences in a power system. Thus, the monitoring of transformers and their ancillary equipment, such as bushings, is of great importance to improving the operational efficiency of these assets. In this context, this paper presents the development of a monitoring system for the measurement of partial discharges (PDs), which are a key parameter in the analysis of insulation condition. PD measurements were performed using the electrical method. For this purpose, a capacitive coupling device was developed for bushings that works as a sensor for high-frequency signals and also as a protection apparatus to guarantee the integrity of the bushings in cases of extreme events, such as lightning surges. In addition, a computational routine is presented that applies a digital filtering process followed by a proposed step for differentiating PDs from noises. For validation, the proposed system was subjected to laboratory tests and field... [more]

Keywords: biomass-fired power generation, performance evaluation, performance improvement, steam cycle integration, waste-to-energy
A novel design has been developed to improve the waste-to-energy process through the integration with a biomass-fired power plant. In the proposed scheme, the superheated steam generated by the waste-to-energy boiler is fed into the low-pressure turbine of the biomass power section for power production. Besides, the feedwater from the biomass power section is utilized to warm the combustion air of the waste-to-energy boiler, and the feedwater of the waste-to-energy boiler is offered by the biomass power section. Based on a 35-MW biomass-fired power plant and a 500-t/d waste-to-energy plant, the integrated design was thermodynamically and economically assessed. The results indicate that the net power generated from waste can be enhanced by 0.66 MW due to the proposed solution, and the waste-to-electricity efficiency increases from 20.49% to 22.12%. Moreover, the net present value of the waste-to-energy section is raised by 5.02 million USD, and the dynamic payback period is cut down by... [more]

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: current source converters, high voltage direct current transmission, multiterminal HVDC, voltage source converters
There is a growing use of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) globally due to the many advantages of Direct Current (DC) transmission systems over Alternating Current (AC) transmission, including enabling transmission over long distances, higher transmission capacity and efficiency. Moreover, HVDC systems can be a great enabler in the transition to a low carbon electrical power system which is an important objective in today’s society. The objectives of the paper are to give a comprehensive overview of HVDC technology, its development, and present status, and to discuss its salient features, limitations and applications.
Subcritical Thermodynamic Cycles with Organic Medium and Isothermal Expansion

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adiabatic expansion, efficiency, isothermal expansion, organic media, subcritical thermodynamic cycles
The efficiencies of the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) are not very high and only very seldom do they exceed 20%. The increase and optimization of initial parameters and certain modifications of the thermodynamic cycle make it possible to overcome these drawbacks. A new modified cycle has been described and analyzed in detail in the paper. Similarly to the Ericsson cycle for gas turbines, isothermal expansion in the turbine is suggested for the power plant with organic media. The new cycle and the typical ORC power plants have the same block diagram. The only difference is that expansion in the proposed cycle occurs not adiabatically but as an isothermal process. The thermodynamic calculations have been carried out for 11 various fluids and 4 different cycles. The obtained results have clearly shown that cycles with isothermal expansion (isothermal turbines) are characterized by remarkably higher efficiency than typical power plants with adiabatic turbines. The increase in efficiency vari... [more]

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: convection, heat transfer, natural convection
Placement of heat source can play a significant role in final heat output, or heat source effectivity. Because of this, there is a need to analyze thermal fields of the heat exchange system by natural convection, where the description by criterion equations is desired, as the net heat output from tubes can be quantified. Based on known theoretical models, numerical methods were adapted to calculate the heat output with natural air flow around tubes, where mathematical models were used to describe the heat transfer more precisely. After validation of heat transfer coefficients, the effect of wall and heat source placement was studied, and the Coanda effect was also observed. The heat source placement also has an effect at the boundary layer, which can change and therefore affect the overall heat transfer process. The optimal wall-to-cylinder distance for an array of horizontal cylinders near a wall was also expressed as a function of the Rayleigh number and number of cylinders in the ar... [more]

Keywords: computational analysis, high pressure steam condensation, high-pressure methanol steam reformer, hydrogen production, phase change heat transfer
A methanol steam reformer converts methanol and steam into a hydrogen-rich mixture through an endothermic reaction. The methanol reformer is divided into a reaction section and a heat supply section that transfers thermal energy from 200 to 300 °C. This study presents the behavior of the methanol steam reforming reaction using the latent heat of the steam. A numerical analysis was separately conducted for two different regimes assuming constant heat flux conditions. A methanol steam reformer is an annulus structure that has a phase change heat transfer from an outer tube to an inner tube. Different from the steam zone temperature in the tube, the latent heat of steam condensation decreases, and there is a gradual between-wall temperature decrease along the longitudinal direction. Since the latent heat of steam condensation is very sensitive to the requested heat from the reformer, it is necessary to consider a refined design of a methanol reformer to obtain a large enough amount of hea... This article presents the analysis of the influence of household appliances on the quality of the energy consumed by the end-user. The results of the research, then, concern the final consumer (the lowest level of the power grid). The research was conducted on 120 combinations of electrical appliances connected into a grid. Each combination consisted of three devices working simultaneously in a micro-grid. The obtained and statistically analyzed data proved that there are several types of appliances that have a great influence on the power quality (PQ) parameters changes. The results of the conducted experiments indicate the devices which influenced significantly the total harmonic distortion of voltage (THDV), the voltage frequency (FREQ) and the voltage fluctuation (V). Specific features of particular devices were examined in terms of their significance for the power quality deviation. This showed the most important features which should be considered while working out the prediction... [more]

Keywords: hierarchical architecture, impedance spectroscopy, magnetoresistivity, photoresistivity, spin battery effect, supramolecular ensemble
We report on the complex GaSe-based hierarchical structures GaSe(CS(NH2)2), GaSe(SmCl3) and GaSe(CS(NH2)2(SmCl3)) synthesized by an intercalation method. The conductive properties of synthesized clathrates and their relation to hierarchical structural complexity were explored by an impedance spectroscopy technique. The impedance response, thermostimulated discharge spectra, and photo- and magnetoresistive effects are reported. Based on the obtained results, the impurity energy spectra were calculated. A strong low-frequency inductive response, observable in the GaSe(SmCl3) clathrate, makes this material promising for the development of gyrator-free nanodelay lines potentially applicable in nanoelectronics. Hierarchical GaSe(CS(NH2)2(SmCl3)) clathrate, on the other hand, reveals hysteresis of the current−voltage characteristics, apparently confirming an accumulation of electric energy at interphase boundaries. A relevant spin battery effect, observable experimentally in stationary magne... [more]

Solar photovoltaic technologies have undergone significant scientific development. To ensure the transfer of knowledge through the training of qualified personnel, didactic tools that can be acquired or built at a reasonable price are needed. Most training and research centres have restrictions on acquiring specific equipment due to its high cost. With this in mind, this article presents the development and transfer of a low-cost I−V curve tracer acquisition system. The device is made up of embedded systems with all the necessary hardware and software for its operation. The hardware and software presented are open source and have a low cost, i.e., the estimated material cost of the system is less than 200 euros. For its development, four institutions from three different countries participated in the project. Three photovoltaic technologies were used to measure the uncertainties related to the equipment developed. In addition, the system can be transferred for use as an academic or res... [more]

Keywords: optimal reactive power dispatch, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, uncertainty
The optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) problem is an important issue to assign the most efficient and secure operating point of the electrical system. The ORPD became a strenuous task, especially with the high penetration of renewable energy resources due to the intermittent and stochastic nature of wind speed and solar irradiance. In this paper, the ORPD is solved using a new natural inspired algorithm called the marine predators’ algorithm (MPA) considering the uncertainties of the load demand and the output powers of wind and solar generation systems. The scenario-based method is applied to handle the uncertainties of the system by generating deterministic scenarios from the probability density functions of the system parameters. The proposed algorithm is applied to solve the ORPD of the IEEE-30 bus system to minimize the power loss and the system voltage devotions. The result verifies that the proposed method is an efficient method for solving the ORPD compared with the state-o... [more]

Keywords: energy flexibility, office buildings, smart technologies, user acceptance
The current energy system is dealing with an increasing share of renewable energy that, because of its intermittent availability, can affect the effectiveness of the energy supply. To cope with the problem, buildings need to become energy flexible. According to the definition given by IEA EBC Annex 67, energy flexibility is the ability of a building to manage its demand and generation according to local climate conditions, user needs and grid requirements. Users of energy-flexible buildings play a crucial role for an effective implementation, thus user acceptance and proper behaviour are important factors. In order to understand the current level of awareness on the topic and the general acceptance of the users, this paper presents the results of a large-scale survey distributed in the office buildings of the Province of Bolzano (Italy). This study investigates the information, experience, beliefs, and desires of the building users (i.e., office employees) with concepts and technologie... [more]

Keywords: instability, twin H-rotor vertical-axis turbines, wake, wavelet transform
In recent years, the H-rotor vertical-axis turbine has attracted considerable attention in the field of wind and tidal power generation. After a series of complex spatiotemporal evolutions, the vortex shed from turbine blades forms a turbulent wake with a multi-scale coherent structure. An analysis of the wake characteristics of twin turbines forms the basis of array optimisation. This study aimed to examine the instability characteristics of a twin-turbine wake with two rotational configurations. The dynamic evolution characteristics of coherent structures with different scales in the wake were analysed via wavelet analysis. The results show that an inverse energy cascade process occurs after the high-frequency small-scale coherent structures induced by rotation lose their coherence. This self-organising characteristic is more apparent in the quasi two-dimensional wake of a forward-moving counter-rotating turbine (Array 1) than in that of a backward-moving counter-rotating turbine (Ar... Keywords: Chinese wolfberry, electric energy, heat pump, kinetic characteristic, solar drying
The present work investigated a solar assisted heat pump system for drying Chinese wolfberry. The kinetic characteristic was firstly analyzed through a series of lab experiments. It was concluded that the Page model was the most suitable for predicting the heat and mass transfer of the wolfberry. Based on the wolfberry kinetic model, solar collector model and chamber air model, the coupled drying system model was developed. The accuracy of the mathematic model was determined through comparing with the preliminary experimental results. The influence of operating conditions on the thermal and energy performance of the dryer for the different operating mode was discussed. The drying weight of no more than 75 kg may be preferable in the stand-alone solar drying mode, and less than 15 h was needed to be dried. The electric energy consumption in the solar assisted the heat pump drying mode was lower than that in the stand-alone heat pump mode, and it was recommended that about 50 kg of wolfb... [more]

Keywords: experimental investigations, fluidized bed heat exchanger, fluidized bed technology, particle transport, thermal energy storage (TES)
In recent years, the fight against global warming and therefore CO2 reduction have become the most important issue for humanity. As a result, volatile sources of energy—like wind and solar power—are penetrating the electrical grid and therefore an increased demand on storage capacities is required. At the TU Wien Institute for Energy Systems and Thermodynamics, a Fluidization Based Particle Thermal Energy Storage (FP-TES) working with bulk material as a sensible storage material is developed. In this paper, the concept and an experimental study of the cold test rig is presented. By means of various pressure measurements, a novel concept of particle transport based on advanced fluidization technology without any mechanical transport devices is investigated. Moreover, a mathematical correlation between the pressure gradients and the particle mass flow is found. Overall, the experimental study provides a full proof of concept and functionality of the novel energy storage system.
The Political Economy of Deep Decarbonization: Tradable Energy Quotas for Energy Descent Futures

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbon budget, deep decarbonization, degrowth, energy descent, epistemic humility, post-carbon, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, Tainter, Tradable Energy Quotas (TEQs), voluntary simplification
This paper reviews and analyses a decarbonization policy called the Tradable Energy Quotas (TEQs) system developed by David Fleming. The TEQs system involves rationing fossil fuel energy use for a nation on the basis of either a contracting carbon emission budget or scarce fuel availability, or both simultaneously, distributing budgets equitably amongst energy-users. Entitlements can be traded to incentivize demand reduction and to maximize efficient use of the limited entitlements. We situate this analysis in the context of Joseph Tainter’s theory about the development and collapse of complex societies. Tainter argues that societies become more socio-politically and technologically ‘complex’ as they solve the problems they face and that such complexification drives increased energy use. For a society to sustain itself, therefore, it must secure the energy needed to solve the range of societal problems that emerge. However, what if, as a result of deep decarbonization, there is less en... [more]

Keywords: borehole heat exchanger depth, detached residence, ground source heat pump system, Japan, suitable areas
Evaluation of appropriate areas to introduce a closed-loop ground-source heat pump (GSHP) system in the case of a standard detached residence was conducted in Akita Plain, Japan. Depth of borehole heat exchanger (BHE) required to use a GSHP system was taken as the suitability index, which is simpler for the general public to understand and to promote the system. Heating and cooling loads of the standard size detached residence were calculated based on the 2013 Energy Conservation Standard. To estimate BHE depths and estimate a suitable area, identical 3D BHE models were constructed at 30 points in the plain. Required BHE depths were determined by performing heat exchange simulations at each location using the calculated loads and heat exchange rates. A suitability map showing distribution of the required BHE depths was prepared. BHE depths were shorter in the north-western area compared to the other parts, implying that the coastal lowlands in this area are more suitable for closed-loo... [more]
Effect of Premixed n-Butanol Ratio on the Initial Stage of Combustion in a Light-Duty Butanol/Diesel Dual-Fuel Engine

Keywords: flammability limit, high-temperature reaction, initial combustion period, n-butanol, reactivity stratification
The impact of premixed n-butanol mixture on the heat release rate was investigated based on a modified light-duty diesel engine. The results show that reactivity stratification is formed in the cylinder through n-butanol port fuel injection (PFI) and diesel direct injection (DI). The initial heat release rate of the diesel/butanol dual-fuel combustion is restrained due to the low ignitability of butanol and the high volatility. Because of the auto-ignition of diesel, premixed n-butanol undergoes a high-temperature reaction, which has an active influence on the heat releasing of diesel/butanol dual-fuel combustion. With the increase of the amount of premixed n-butanol injected, the heat release rate in the initial combustion period has a critical value. When the n-butanol injection quantity is less than 13 mg/cycle, the initial heat release rate of dual-fuel combustion is lower than the pure diesel combustion because the lean premixed n-butanol/air mixture limits the flame propagation.... Renewables should become more continuously available, reliable and cost-efficient to manage the challenges caused by the energy transition. Thus, analytic and numerical investigations for the layout of a pilot plant of a concept called Fluidisation-Based Particle Thermal Energy Storage (FP-TES)—a highly flexible, short- to long-term fluidised bed regenerative heat storage utilising a pressure gradient for hot powder transport, and thus enabling minimal losses, high energy densities, compact construction and countercurrent heat exchange—are presented in this article. Such devices in decentralised set-up—being included in energy- and especially heat-intensive industries, storing latent or sensible heat or power-to-heat to minimise losses and compensate fluctuations—can help to achieve the above-stated goals. Part I of this article is focused on geometrical and fluidic design via numerical investigations utilising Computational Particle Fluid Dynamics (CPFD). In the process a controlled t... [more]

Keywords: coolant, cooling system, Lithium-ion battery, permitted temperature
The spontaneous combustion of electric vehicles occurs frequently, and the main reason is the thermal runaway of a lithium-ion battery. In order to prevent the heat that is produced in the use of a lithium-ion battery out of control, this study proposed a coolant circulation cooling system, that is, the heat generated by the lithium-ion battery is transferred to heat sinks through aluminum plates and copper rods, and then dissipated through the coolant. Based on a CALB-LB5F73 LiFePO4 battery pack, experiments with the coolant circulation cooling system were conducted to study the temperature rise characteristics at different ambient temperatures. The temperature of the battery pack was still close to the upper limit of permitted temperature when the ambient temperature reached 313 K. Further improvement, increasing the diameter of copper rod of the system was proposed to enhance heat dissipation and simulations with this scheme were completed. The findings show that the cooling system... [more]
Investigating the Width of Isolated Coal Pillars in Deep Hard-Strata Mines for Prevention of Mine Seismicity and Rockburst

Keywords: compression, isolated coal pillar, limited deflection, microseismic monitoring, mine seismicity, rockburst
In deep mines, a reasonable design of the widths of isolated coal pillars (ICPs) is critically important, particularly for hard-strata mines. This is because the frequent occurrence of mine seismicity (MS) and rockburst in deep mines often arises from the inappropriate widths of the remnant ICPs. To address this problem, this paper takes the ICP of Yingpanhao Coal Mine in Inner Mongolia in China as the engineering case study and then presents a mechanical model to illuminate the occurrence mechanism of MS induced by the mining on both sides of ICPs. The results indicate that, after the mining on both sides of ICPs, the ICPs will produce a vertical compressive deformation, and the overlying high main key stratum (MKS) will experience a flexure deformation. When the limited deflection of MKS is less than the compression of ICPs, the MKS will be fractured, and the released energy may lead to MS. Based on the mechanism model, a design criterion is proposed for ICP widths; this criterion ca... [more]

In the upcoming years, more challenging CO2 emission targets along with the introduction of more severe Real Driving Emissions limits are expected to foster the development and the exploitation of innovative technologies to further improve the efficiency of automotive Spark Ignition (SI) engines. Among these technologies, Water Injection (WI), thanks to its knock mitigation capabilities, can represent a valuable solution, although it may significantly increase the complexity of engine design and calibration. Since, to tackle such a complexity, reliable virtual development tools seem to be mandatory, this paper aims to describe a quasi-dimensional approach to model a Port Water Injection (PWI) system integrated in a Turbocharged Direct Injection Spark Ignition (T-DISI) engine. Through a port-puddling model calibrated with 3D-CFD data, the proposed methodology was proven to be able to properly replicate transient phenomena of water wall film formation, catching cycle by cycle the amount...
