Solar Integrated Anaerobic Digester: Energy Savings and Economics
Lidia Lombardi, Barbara Mendecka, Simone Fabrizi
March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, biogas, biomethane, integration, solar thermal energy
Industrial anaerobic digestion requires low temperature thermal energy to heat the feedstock and maintain temperature conditions inside the reactor. In some cases, the thermal requirements are satisfied by burning part of the produced biogas in devoted boilers. However, part of the biogas can be saved by integrating thermal solar energy into the anaerobic digestion plant. We study the possibility of integrating solar thermal energy in biowaste mesophilic/thermophilic anaerobic digestion, with the aim of reducing the amount of biogas burnt for internal heating and increasing the amount of biogas, further upgraded to biomethane and injected into the natural gas grid. With respect to previously available studies that evaluated the possibility of integrating solar thermal energy in anaerobic digestion, we introduce the topic of economic sustainability by performing a preliminary and simplified economic analysis of the solar system, based only on the additional costs/revenues. The case of I... [more]

Keywords: home energy management scheme (HEMS), power sharing algorithm (PSA), renewable energy sources (RESs), residence energy management (REM), smart grid
The steady increase in energy demand for residential consumers requires an efficient energy management scheme. Utility organizations encourage household applicants to engage in residential energy management (REM) system. The utility’s primary goal is to reduce system peak load demand while consumer intends to reduce electricity bills. The benefits of REM can be enhanced with renewable energy sources (RESs), backup battery storage system (BBSS), and optimal power-sharing strategies. This paper aims to reduce energy usages and monetary cost for smart grid communities with an efficient home energy management scheme (HEMS). Normally, the residential consumer deals with numerous smart home appliances that have various operating time priorities depending on consumer preferences. In this paper, a cost-efficient power-sharing technique is developed which works based on priorities of appliances’ operating time. The home appliances are sorted on priority basis and the BBSS are charged and discha... [more]

Keywords: charge/discharge cycle, distributed ECM, EIS, mechanical deformation
Lithium-ion batteries have found various modern applications due to their high energy density, long cycle life, and low self-discharge. However, increased use of these batteries has been accompanied by an increase in safety concerns, such as spontaneous fires or explosions due to impact or indentation. Mechanical damage to a battery cell is often enough reason to discard it. However, if an Electric Vehicle is involved in a crash, there is no means to visually inspect all the cells inside a pack, sometimes consisting of thousands of cells. Furthermore, there is no documented report on how mechanical damage may change the electrical response of a cell, which in turn can be used to detect damaged cells by the battery management system (BMS). In this research, we investigated the effects of mechanical deformation on electrical responses of Lithium-ion cells to understand what parameters in electrical response can be used to detect damage where cells cannot be visually inspected. We used ch... [more]

Keywords: compressible flow, design optimization, gas turbine, stabilized and multiscale FEM, surrogate management framework
This work couples high-fidelity moving-domain finite element compressible flow modeling with a Surrogate Management Framework (SMF) for optimization to effectively design a variable speed gas turbine stage. The superior accuracy of high-fidelity modeling, however, comes with relatively high computational costs, which are further amplified in the iterative design process that relies on parametric sweeps. An innovative approach is developed to reduce the number of iterations needed for optimal design, leading to a significant reduction in the computational cost without sacrificing the high fidelity of the analysis. The proposed design optimization approach is applied to a novel incidence-tolerant turbomachinery blade technology that articulates the stator- and rotor-blade positions of an annular single-stage high pressure turbine to achieve peak performance. This work also extends our understanding of rotor−stator interactions by simulating complex internal flows occurring during multi-s... [more]

Meng Xia, Fujun Zhang
March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: co-simulation, diesel engine, fuzzy optimization, model-based optimization, regulated two-stage turbocharging system
Air intake and fuel supply conditions are the major factors that affect diesel engine performance at plateau. In a regulated two-stage turbocharged diesel engine, these parameters are reflected as the adjustment of fuel injection mass (mfuel), fuel injection advance angle, and bypass valve opening of a high-pressure stage (HP) turbine. Due to the strongly nonlinear nature and complexity of the diesel engine, it is difficult to find the proper parameter combinations. That is why a model-based optimization method is adopted in this paper. The simulation model of a six-cylinder two-stage turbocharged diesel engine is built on the GT-SUITE platform. According to the analysis of diesel engine operation characteristics at high altitude, a fuzzy optimization algorithm is proposed based on a fuzzy logic controller and is realized in a MATLAB/simulink (MATLAB 2014, Mathworks, Natick, MA, USA) environment. Joint optimization of air intake and fuel supply parameters is then performed on the GT-MA... [more]
Do Tense Geopolitical Factors Drive Crude Oil Prices?

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dynamic correlation, extreme political acts, GPR index, Granger causality test, time-varying copula
Geopolitical factors are considered a crucial factor that makes a difference in crude oil prices. Over the last three decades, many political events occurred frequently, causing short-term fluctuations in crude oil prices. This paper aims to examine the dynamic correlation and causal link between geopolitical factors and crude oil prices based on data from June 1987 to February 2020. By using a time-varying copula approach, it is shown that the correlation between geopolitical factors and crude oil prices is strong during periods of political tensions. The GPA (geopolitical acts) index, as the real factor, drives the rise in prices of crude oil. Moreover, the dynamic correlation between geopolitical factors and crude oil prices shows strong volatility over time during periods of political tensions. We also found unidirectional causality running from geopolitical factors to crude oil prices by using the Granger causality test.

Keywords: rotor equivalent wind speeds, shear exponent, Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, wind energy, wind turbines
Continued growth of wind turbine physical dimensions is examined in terms of the implications for wind speed, power and shear across the rotor plane. High-resolution simulations with the Weather Research and Forecasting model are used to generate statistics of wind speed profiles for scenarios of current and future wind turbines. The nine-month simulations, focused on the eastern Central Plains, show that the power scales broadly as expected with the increase in rotor diameter (D) and wind speeds at hub-height (H). Increasing wind turbine dimensions from current values (approximately H = 100 m, D = 100 m) to those of the new International Energy Agency reference wind turbine (H = 150 m, D = 240 m), the power across the rotor plane increases 7.1 times. The mean domain-wide wind shear exponent (α) decreases from 0.21 (H = 100 m, D = 100 m) to 0.19 for the largest wind turbine scenario considered (H = 168 m, D = 248 m) and the frequency of extreme positive shear (α > 0.2) declines from 48... The Influence of Power Sources for Charging the Batteries of Electric Cars on CO2 Emissions during Daily Driving: A Case Study from Poland
Łukasz Sobol, Arkadiusz Dyjakon
March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CO2 emission, daily driving, direct emission, electric car, indirect emission
The main sources of greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution from the transport sector are diesel- and gasoline-powered passenger cars. The combustion of large amounts of conventional fuels by cars contributes to a significant release of various compounds into the atmosphere, such as solid particles, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide. In order to reduce these pollutants in places of their high concentration (especially in urban agglomerations), the use of ecological means of transport for daily driving is highly recommended. Electric vehicles (EV) are characterized by ecological potential due to their lack of direct emissions and low noise. However, in Poland and many other countries, electricity production is still based on fossil fuels which can significantly influence the indirect emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere associated with battery charging. Thus, indirect emissions from electric cars may be comparable or even higher than direct emissions rel... [more]

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cogeneration, multigeneration, process simulations, trigeneration, waste-to-energy
There is increasing interest in the harnessing of energy from waste owing to the increase in global waste generation and inadequate currently implemented waste disposal practices, such as composting, landfilling or dumping. The purpose of this study is to provide a modelling and simulation framework to analyze the technical potential of treating municipal solid waste (MSW) and refuse-derived fuel (RDF) for the polygeneration of biofuels along with district heating (DH) and power. A flexible waste gasification polygeneration facility is proposed in this study. Two types of waste—MSW and RDF—are used as feedstock for the polygeneration process. Three different gasifiers—the entrained flow gasifier (EFG), circulating fluidized bed gasifier (CFBG) and dual fluidized bed gasifier (DFBG)—are compared. The polygeneration process is designed to produce DH, power and biofuels (methane, methanol/dimethyl ether, gasoline or diesel and ammonia). Aspen Plus is used for the modelling and simulation... Keywords: halide perovskite, optoelectronics, photodetectors, photovoltaics, single crystals
Halide perovskite is one of the most promising semiconducting materials in a variety of fields such as solar cells, photodetectors, and light-emitting diodes. Lead halide perovskite single crystals featuring long diffusion length, high carrier mobility, large light absorption coefficient and low defect density, have been attracting increasing attention. Fundamental study of the intrinsic nature keeps revealing the superior optoelectrical properties of perovskite single crystals over their polycrystalline thin film counterparts, but to date, the device performance lags behind. The best power conversion efficiency (PCE) of single crystal-based solar cells is 21.9%, falling behind that of polycrystalline thin film solar cells (25.2%). The oversized thickness, defective surfaces, and difficulties in depositing functional layers, hinder the application of halide perovskite single crystals in optoelectronic devices. Efforts have been made to synthesize large-area single crystalline thin film... [more]

Keywords: choice experiment, consumer preference, electric vehicle, electricity generation mix, multiple discrete-continuous extreme value model, vehicle-to-grid (V2G)
Global trends and prospects of environmentally friendly transportation have helped to popularize electric vehicles (EVs). With the spread of EVs, vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology is gaining importance for its role in connecting the electricity stored in the battery of EVs to a grid-like energy storage system (ESS). Electricity generation mix and battery for V2G energy storage have a decisive effect on the stabilization of a V2G system, but no attempt has been made. Therefore, this study analyzes consumer preference considering the electricity generation mix and battery for the V2G. We conduct a conjoint survey of a 1000 South Koreans and employ the multiple discrete-continuous extreme value model. The results show that drivers prefer plug-in hybrid- and battery EVs to other vehicles. Additionally, findings show that driver’s utility changes at 27.9% of the battery allowance for V2G system and it becomes positive after 55.7%. Furthermore, we conduct a scenario analysis considering the e... [more]

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 48-V mild hybrid system, cycle energy, drag coefficient, fuel consumption, idle stop–start, MHSG (mild hybrid starter and generator), RDE, real-world driving conditions, test cycle, tire rolling resistance, WLTP
Higher speeds, faster acceleration and longer duration need a more realistic driving cycle. As a result, a new test procedure that reflects real-world driving conditions has been applied since 2017, and the previous development environment optimized for NEDC has also changed. In this study, several factors and technologies relating to fuel consumption, such as vehicle weight, tire rolling resistance, drag of aerodynamic, stop−start, and 48 V mild hybrid system, are evaluated as per the new worldwide harmonized light vehicles test procedure (WLTP) and compared with that of the previous European driving cycle (NEDC). The impact of the vehicle weight is increased in case of the WLTP due to faster acceleration compared to that under NEDC. The influence of aerodynamic force is very important as the average and maximum speed are increased. Meanwhile, the impact of idle stop−start technology is lower compared to that under NEDC due to the reduction in idle operation time. The 48-V mild hybrid... [more]

Keywords: battery energy storage, hierarchical modified droop control, minimum SFOC, PV system, rule-based energy management, shipboard MVDC distribution system, six-phase PMSM, variable speed diesel engine
In the modern shipboard power system, there is a growing concern about reduced fuel economy, efficiency improvement, and minimized emission in recent years. Besides, considering the islanded nature of the shipboard power system, ensuring the system reliability at both generation and load side is crucial. In this context, a hybrid medium voltage DC (MVDC) distribution system concept with diesel engine, PV system, and battery energy storage system (BESS) as the generators for the shipboard power system is proposed. Variable speed operation of a diesel engine is considered for the benefit of minimal specific fuel oil consumption (SFOC). Regarding the fault-tolerant characteristics of six-phase permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM), it is used for both generating and motoring application, thus maintaining system reliability at any time. A hierarchical control system is designed and implemented to ensure proper load power-sharing among the generators and to regulate the dc-link voltag... [more]
A Review of Approaches for the Detection and Treatment of Outliers in Processing Wind Turbine and Wind Farm Measurements
Mingzhe Zou, Sasa Z. Djokic
March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: measurement data, outlier, wind farm, wind turbine
Due to the significant increase of the number of wind-based electricity generation systems, it is important to have accurate information on their operational characteristics, which are typically obtained by processing large amounts of measurements from the individual wind turbines (WTs) and from the whole wind farms (WFs). For further processing of these measurements, it is important to identify and remove bad quality or abnormal data, as otherwise obtained WT and WF models may be biased, or even inaccurate. There are wide ranges of both causes and manifestations of these bad/abnormal data, which are often denoted with the common general term “outlier”. This paper reviews approaches for the detection and treatment of outliers in processing WT and WF measurements, starting from the discussion of the commonly measured parameters, variables and resolutions, as well as the corresponding requirements and recommendations in related standards. Afterwards, characteristics and causes of outlier... [more]

Keywords: casing string, COMSOL multiphysics software, magnetic field model, magnetic induction intensity, magnetizing, passive magnetic ranging method, vector magnetic potential method
In the field of petroleum drilling engineering, passive magnetic ranging technology is generally used for specialized drilling operations such as connecting relief wells, preventing wellbore collisions, guiding parallel horizontal wells, etc. Although pre-magnetized casing strings have been used to improve the detection distance and accuracy, the theoretical mechanism is not well understood. Based on the equivalent current model of a permanent magnet, a theoretical magnetic field model around the pre-magnetized casing string was established by using the vector potential method and vector superposition principle and validated by the COMSOL Multiphysics software. Our results show that connecting pre-magnetized individual casings with homogeneous magnetic poles can enlarge the magnetic induction intensity around the total casing string. Furthermore, the magnitude close to the casing coupling is significantly larger than that close to the middle of the individual casing. Connecting pre-mag... [more]

Keywords: degree of freedom, drive system, photovoltaic tracking system, solar energy, tracking strategies
This paper presents a thorough review of state-of-the-art research and literature in the field of photovoltaic tracking systems for the production of electrical energy. A review of the literature is performed mainly for the field of solar photovoltaic tracking systems, which gives this paper the necessary foundation. Solar systems can be roughly divided into three fields: the generation of thermal energy (solar collectors), the generation of electrical energy (photovoltaic systems), and the generation of electrical energy/thermal energy (hybrid systems). The development of photovoltaic systems began in the mid-19th century, followed shortly by research in the field of tracking systems. With the development of tracking systems, different types of tracking systems, drives, designs, and tracking strategies were also defined. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of photovoltaic tracking systems, as well as the latest studies that have been done in recent years. The review will be s... [more]

Keywords: geothermal energy, geothermal gradient, heat-in-place, Monte Carlo method, numerical model, Nunavik, paleoclimate, petrothermal system, technical potential, theoretical potential
The Canadian off-grid communities heavily rely on fossil fuels. This unsustainable energetic framework needs to change, and deep geothermal energy can play an important role. However, limited data availability is one of the challenges to face when evaluating such resources in remote areas. Thus, a first-order assessment of the geothermal energy source is, therefore, needed to trigger interest for further development in northern communities. This is the scope of the present work. Shallow subsurface data and outcrop samples treated as subsurface analogs were used to infer the deep geothermal potential beneath the community of Kuujjuaq (Nunavik, Canada). 2D heat conduction models with time-varying upper boundary condition reproducing climate events were used to simulate the subsurface temperature distribution. The available thermal energy was inferred with the volume method. Monte Carlo-based sensitivity analyses were carried out to determine the main geological and technical uncertaintie... [more]

Keywords: energy consumption rate, regional energy consumption, Romanian Danube Valley
Based on the national level data on energy consumption by final consumption sectors (agricultural, industrial, construction, residential and transport), the present study is aimed at estimating the energy consumption at county level. The overall energy Romania has consumed throughout a year has been broken down into ‘demographic’ and ‘economic’ components. The changes in the two components were determined on an annual basis for the following reference years: 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2015. The variables used in the current investigation were assembled into two groups of indicators: demographic (urban population, population size, proportion of the population aged 65 years and over, the economically active population divided according to activities of national economy: agriculture, industry, transport), and economic (GDP per capita, energy consumption by the activities of the national economy: agriculture, residential, industry, transport). In some cases, where a significant share of th... [more]

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Biomass, Energy Conversion, HiTAG/HiTSG technology, technoeconomic study, wood pellets
An advanced thermal conversion system involving high-temperature gasification of biomass and municipal waste into biofuel, syngas or hydrogen-rich gas is presented in this paper. The decomposition of solid biomass and wastes by gasification is carried out experimentally with a modern and innovative regenerator and updraft continuous gasifier, among others. A ceramic high-cycle regenerator provides extra energy for the thermal conversion of biomass or any other solids waste. Highly preheated air and steam gas (heated up to 1600 °C) was used as an oxidizing or gasification agent (feed gas). Preheated feed gas also enhances the thermal decomposition of the gasification solids for fuel gas. However, the main objective of this work is to promote new and advanced technology for the thermochemical conversion of biomass for alternative energy production. Selected results from experimental and numerical studies are also presented.

Keywords: battery aging, battery charging, electric vehicles, intelligent charging, light gradient boosting, optimal charging behavior
The aging of rechargeable batteries, with its associated replacement costs, is one of the main issues limiting the diffusion of electric vehicles (EVs) as the future transportation infrastructure. An effective way to mitigate battery aging is to act on its charge cycles, more controllable than discharge ones, implementing so-called battery-aware charging protocols. Since one of the main factors affecting battery aging is its average state of charge (SOC), these protocols try to minimize the standby time, i.e., the time interval between the end of the actual charge and the moment when the EV is unplugged from the charging station. Doing so while still ensuring that the EV is fully charged when needed (in order to achieve a satisfying user experience) requires a “just-in-time” charging protocol, which completes exactly at the plug-out time. This type of protocol can only be achieved if an estimate of the expected plug-in duration is available. While many previous works have stressed the... [more]

Keywords: finite element analysis, furling, limited-angle torque actuator, micro wind turbine, stepper motor
This paper presents two electromechanical systems used for the overspeed protection of small wind turbines. The actuators have the purpose of rotating the back rudder (tail vane) of the wind turbine when the blades are overspeeding. The rudder rotation angle is 90 degrees in order to completely turn the wind turbine blades away from the wind flow direction. The first device is a new limited-angle torque electromechanical actuator consisting of a device with a simplified structure composed of four permanent magnets (two on each side) glued on a rotor mounted between two stator poles built from ordinary rectangular construction pipes and an electronic control unit. The second device is based on a regular stepper motor actuator with a reduction gear and an appropriate control scheme to maximize the energy harvested at high, over-nominal wind speeds. A generic comparison is provided for the proposed solutions.

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biodiesel, oxidative reactivity, physical property, soot particles
The present study investigated the effects of adding 20 vol.% biodiesel to petroleum diesel (to produce a mixture termed B20) on the physical properties and reactivity of the resulting exhaust soot particles. Tests were performed at different engine loads of a constant speed, and the soot particles from the combustion of B20 and petroleum diesel fuel (DF) were collected from the engine exhaust stream. Transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy were employed for the analysis of soot morphology and nanostructure. The thermogravimetric analysis was used to determine the oxidative reactivity of the soot. For both the DF and B20 soot, increased engine loads result in soot aggregates with more compact morphology and primary soot particles with larger size and more organized structure. Compared to the DF soot, the B20 aggregates have a slightly more compact morphology and smaller primary particle size. No appreciable differences are observed in nanostructure between the DF and B2... [more]

Keywords: genoa harbour, levelised cost of energy, payback period, Wave Energy
Coastal resilience is often achieved by traditional civil engineering projects, such as dikes and breakwaters. However, given the pressing nature of Climate Change, integrating energy converters in “classical” structures can enhance innovation, and help in pursuing decarbonisation targets. In this work, we present an alternative for integrating a wave energy converter at a vertical wall breakwater, following past successful projects. Our approach is based on a high spatio-temporal wave dataset to properly quantify expected energy production, but also focus on the hours for which other time-dependent renewables cannot produce, i.e., solar. Our analysis evaluates the power performance and assesses the economic parameters and viability of the proposed installation. Our integrated solution shares the main capital with the breakwater and can produce from 390 MWh−2300 MWh/year, displacing more than 1760 Tn of CO2 annually. In addition to power generated, we estimated the payback period for m... [more]

Keywords: extended Kalman filter, maximum correntropy criterion, non-Gaussian noise, SOC estimation, weighted least squares
State of charge (SOC) estimation plays a crucial role in battery management systems. Among all the existing SOC estimation approaches, the model-driven extended Kalman filter (EKF) has been widely utilized to estimate SOC due to its simple implementation and nonlinear property. However, the traditional EKF derived from the mean square error (MSE) loss is sensitive to non-Gaussian noise which especially exists in practice, thus the SOC estimation based on the traditional EKF may result in undesirable performance. Hence, a novel robust EKF method with correntropy loss is employed to perform SOC estimation to improve the accuracy under non-Gaussian environments firstly. Secondly, a novel robust EKF, called C-WLS-EKF, is developed by combining the advantages of correntropy and weighted least squares (WLS) to improve the digital stability of the correntropy EKF (C-EKF). In addition, the convergence of the proposed algorithm is verified by the Cramér−Rao low bound. Finally, a C-WLS-EKF metho... [more]
