Heangwoo Lee, Janghoo Seo
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy saving, external light shelf, performance evaluation, prism sheet
To address the increased use of lighting energy in the building sector, research on the use of light shelves has been increasing. Previous studies have focused on applying operating techniques to improve daylighting performance, which reduces the economic efficiency of light shelves and the building energy savings. This study proposes the use of prism sheets to improve the performance of light shelves, a concept which was validated by evaluating the performance related to saving building energy and improving indoor light uniformity through a full-scale testbed. This study used an external light shelf with no prism sheet, a window with a prism sheet applied, and a window with both an external light shelf and prism sheet applied as Case 1, Case 2, and Case 3, respectively, and analyzed the illuminance distribution and lighting energy consumption required to maintain the optimal indoor illumination for each case. This study also derived the optimal specifications for each case to save bui... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: barriers to market entry, heating sector, solid biofuels, solutions
Solid biofuels have the potential of making a major contribution to achieving the objectives of the Paris Climate Agreement if they are used more extensively for covering the heat demand of the industry and the trade, commerce, and service (TCS) sector. To unlock this potential, a holistic analysis of the supply chain from producer to end customer was performed, involving consultants, planners, and financial institutions. The focus is on the deployment of larger biomass heating boilers (with heat loads spanning several 100 kW to several MW). The study identifies the most important barriers for expanding the use of solid biofuels for heat in the German TCS sector as well as in the industry sector. Nine sets of measures were identified for overcoming the most critical barriers, among others, by drawing on best practice approaches and solutions from other German and European contexts. Based on these measures, political recommendations were derived to shape the regulatory framework conditi... [more]

Keywords: components selection, costs analysis, Sustainability, vehicle assembling, Vehicle design
Hybrid vehicles currently represent a compromise between the maturity of conventional vehicles and the low consumption and attention to environmental issues of electric vehicles. This article analyzes the feasibility of a hybrid series vehicle where the heat engine is replaced by a micro gas turbine. In the continuous generation of electric current, it has numerous advantages compared to an internal combustion engine and the purpose of the article is to verify whether these advantages also apply to traction in a hybrid vehicle. The model will be a city car as problems in urban environments of pollution and optimization of consumption are more revealing. After defining performance requirements, the main components are sized and then selected from the catalog, paying attention in the search for a compromise between performance, space constraints, and costs. The Advisor software will then be used to simulate the configuration in both urban and suburban cycles, paying attention to performa... [more]

Keywords: battery storage, intraday market, peak-shaving, photovoltaic power plant, power control, smart grid
The number of large energy storage units installed in the power system has increased over the last few years. This fact remains closely linked to the increase in the share of renewable energy in electricity generation. This is necessary to maintain the stability of the grid, which is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain due to the growing number of renewable energy sources (RES). Energy production from these sources is difficult to estimate, and possible unplanned shortages and surpluses in production are the cause of voltage and frequency fluctuations, which is an undesirable state. Consequently, the use of energy storage not only contributes to the regulation of grid operation but can also, under appropriate conditions, constitute an additional load if too much energy is generated by RES, or the source when the generation from RES is insufficient. The main contributions of this paper are as follows: A presentation of practical results achieved by implementing two optimal contr... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: equivalent circuit, Fourier transform, internal resistance, ultracapacitor
The specific power storage capabilities of double-layer ultracapacitors are receiving significant attention from engineers and scientific researchers. Nevertheless, their dynamic behavior should be studied to improve the performance and for efficient applications in electrical devices. This article presents an infinite resistor−capacitor (r−C) chain-based mathematical model for the analysis of double layer ultracapacitors. The internal resistance and capacitance were measured for repetitive charging and discharging cycles. The magnitudes of internal resistance and capacitance showed approximately ±10% changes for charge-discharge processes. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy investigations revealed that the impedance of a double-layer ultracapacitor does not change significantly in the temperature range of (−30 °C to +30 °C) and voltage range of (0.3376−2.736 V). The analysis of impedance data using the proposed mathematical model showed good agreement between the experimental and... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbonate reservoir, enhanced oil recovery, forward combustion, high-pressure combustion tube, reverse combustion
The work presented herein is devoted to a unique set of forward and reverse combustion tube (CT) experiments to access the suitability and potential of the in situ combustion (ISC) method for the light oil carbonate reservoir. One forward and one reverse combustion tube tests were carried out using the high-pressure combustion tube (HPCT) experimental setup. However, during reverse combustion, the front moved in the opposite direction to the airflow. The results obtained from experiments such as fuel/air requirements, H/C ratio, and recovery efficiency are crucial for further validation of the numerical model. A quantitative assessment of the potential for the combustion was carried out. The oil recovery of forward combustion was as high as 91.4% of the initial oil in place, while that for the reverse combustion test demonstrated a 43% recovery. In the given conditions, forward combustion demonstrated significantly higher efficiency. However, the stabilized combustion front propagation... [more]

Keywords: cerium-zinc oxide nanoparticle additives, engine performance, nanoparticle combustion, soybean biodiesel
This study considered the impacts of diesel−soybean biodiesel blends mixed with 3% cerium coated zinc oxide (Ce-ZnO) nanoparticles on the performance, emission, and combustion characteristics of a single cylinder diesel engine. The fuel blends were prepared using 25% soybean biodiesel in diesel (SBME25). Ce-ZnO nanoparticle additives were blended with SBME25 at 25, 50, and 75 ppm using the ultrasonication process with a surfactant (Span 80) at 2 vol.% to enhance the stability of the blend. A variable compression ratio engine operated at a 19.5:1 compression ratio (CR) using these blends resulted in an improvement in overall engine characteristics. With 50 ppm Ce-ZnO nanoparticle additive in SBME25 (SBME25Ce-ZnO50), the brake thermal efficiency (BTE) and heat release rate (HRR) increased by 20.66% and 18.1%, respectively; brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) by 21.81%; and the CO, smoke, and hydrocarbon (HC) decreased by 30%, 18.7%, and 21.5%, respectively, compared to SBME25 fuel ope... Keywords: conjugate thermal analysis, heat transfer, Machine Learning, Optimization, thermal design, turbine cooling
A simple yet effective optimization technique is developed to solve nonlinear conjugate heat transfer. The proposed Nonlinear Optimization with Replacement Strategy (NORS) is a mutation of several existing optimization processes. With the improvements of 3D metal printing of turbine components, it is feasible to have film holes with unconventional diameters, as these holes are created while printing the component. This paper seeks to optimize each film hole diameter at the leading edge of a turbine vane to satisfy several optimum thermal design objectives with given design constraints. The design technique developed uses linear regression-based machine learning model and further optimizes with strategic improvement of the training dataset. Optimization needs cost and benefit criteria are used to base its decision of success, and cost is minimized with maximum benefit within given constraints. This study minimizes the coolant flow (cost) while satisfying the constraints on average metal... [more]

Keywords: electric vehicle batteries (EVBs), electric vehicles (EVs), frequency droop control (FDC), vehicle-to-grid (V2G)
Nowadays, due to the decreasing use of traditional generators in favor of renewable energy sources, power grids are facing a reduction of system inertia and primary frequency regulation capability. Such an issue is exacerbated by the continuously increasing number of electric vehicles (EVs), which results in enforcing novel approaches in the grid operations management. However, from being an issue, the increase of EVs may turn to be a solution to several power system challenges. In this context, a crucial role is played by the so-called vehicle-to-grid (V2G) mode of operation, which has the potential to provide ancillary services to the power grid, such as peak clipping, load shifting, and frequency regulation. More in detail, EVs have recently started to be effectively used for one of the most traditional frequency regulation approaches: the so-called frequency droop control (FDC). This is a primary frequency regulation, currently obtained by adjusting the active power of generators i... [more]

Keywords: efficiency analysis, hydro power, marine-current, planetary gear, wind energy
The paper presents a general approach to the steady-state efficiency analysis of one degree of freedom (1-DOF) speed increasers with one or two inputs, and one or two outputs, applicable to wind, hydro and marine-current power generating systems. The mechanical power flow, and the efficiency of this type of complex speed increasers, are important issues in the design and development of new power-generating systems. It is revealed that speed increases, with in-parallel transmission of the mechanical power from the wind or water rotors to the electric generator, have better efficiency than serial transmissions, but their efficiency calculus is still a challenging problem, solved in the paper by applying the decomposition method of complex speed increasers into simpler component planetary gear sets. Therefore, kinematic, steady-state torque and efficiency equations are derived for a generic 1-DOF speed increasers with two inputs and two outputs, obtained by connecting in parallel two gear... Keywords: efficiency, endoreversible thermodynamics, irreversibility, Optimization, piston motion optimization, power, stirling engine
The recuperation of otherwise lost waste heat provides a formidable way to decrease the primary energy consumption of many technical systems. A possible route to achieve that goal is through the use of Stirling engines, which have shown to be reliable and efficient devices. One can increase their performance by optimizing the piston motion. Here, it is investigated to which extent the cycle averaged power output can be increased by using a special class of adjustable sinusoidal motions (the AS class). In particular the influence of the regeneration effectiveness on the piston motion is examined. It turns out that with the optimized piston motion one can achieve performance gains for the power output of up to 50% depending on the loss mechanisms involved. A remarkable result is that the power output does not depend strongly on the limitations of the regenerator, in fact—depending on the loss terms—the influence of the regenerator practically vanishes.

Keywords: aftertreatment thermal management, diesel engine emissions, light-duty diesel engine, light-off temperature, one- dimensional model, variable valve actuation, variable valve timing, world harmonized light-duty vehicle test procedure
Growing interest has arisen to adopt Variable Valve Timing (VVT) technology for automotive engines due to the need to fulfill the pollutant emission regulations. Several VVT strategies, such as the exhaust re-opening and the late exhaust closing, can be used to achieve an increment in the after-treatment upstream temperature by increasing the residual gas amount. In this study, a one-dimensional gas dynamics engine model has been used to simulate several VVT strategies and develop a control system to actuate over the valves timing in order to increase diesel oxidation catalyst efficiency and reduce the exhaust pollutant emissions. A transient operating conditions comparison, taking the Worldwide Harmonized Light-Duty Vehicles Test Cycle (WLTC) as a reference, has been done by analyzing fuel economy, HC and CO pollutant emissions levels. The results conclude that the combination of an early exhaust and a late intake valve events leads to a 20% reduction in CO emissions with a fuel penal... [more]

Keywords: diffuser augmented turbine, hydrokinetic turbine, hydropower, optimization based design, power augmentation, shrouded turbine
Horizontal axis turbines are commonly used for harnessing renewable hydrokinetic energy, contained in marine and river currents. In order to encourage the expansion of electricity generation using micro-hydrokinetic turbines, several design improvements are investigated. Firstly, optimization-based design of rotor blade is used to get as close as possible to the efficiency limit of 59.3% (known as Betz limit), that counts for bare turbine rotors, placed in the free flow. Additional diffuser elements are further added to examine the potential to overcome the theoretical efficiency limit by accelerating water at the axial direction. Various diffuser geometrical configurations are investigated using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to obtain insight into hydrodynamics of augmented micro-hydrokinetic turbines. Moreover, the turbines are compared from the energy conversion efficiency point of view. The highest maximum power coefficient increase of 81% is obtained with brimmed (flanged... [more]

Keywords: coal structure combinations, fracturing curves, fracturing effect, Shizhuangnan Block
Coal structure directly correlates to permeability and hydraulic fracturing effects. Underground coal mining indicates that a single coal section generally contains multiple coal structures in superposition, making how to recognise the coal structure combination and predict its influence on coal permeability a challenging problem. Based on well-drilling sampled cores, the geological strength index (GSI), and well-logging data, the DEN, GR, CALX, and CALY were selected to establish a model to predict GSI by multiple regression to identify coal structure from 100 coalbed methane wells. Based on fitting GSI and corresponding permeability test values, injection fall-off (IFO) testing, and hydraulic fracturing results, permeability prediction models for pre- and post-fracturing behaviour were established, respectively. The fracturing effect was evaluated by the difference in permeability. The results show that a reservoir can be classified into one of nine types by different coal structure... [more]

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combination of feedback and feedforward control, fluctuating load reduction, lidar-based feedforward control, nacelle acceleration feedback control, wind turbine control
An advanced pitch controller is proposed for the load mitigation of wind turbines. This study focuses on the nacelle acceleration feedback control and lidar-based feedforward control, and discusses how these controllers contribute to reduce the load on wind turbines. The nacelle acceleration feedback control increases the damping ratio of the first mode of wind turbines, but it also increases the fluctuation in the rotor speed and thrust force, which results in the optimum gain value. The lidar-based feedforward control reduces the fluctuation in the rotor speed and the thrust force by decreasing the fluctuating wind load on the rotor, which reduces the fluctuating load on the tower. The combination of the nacelle acceleration feedback control and the lidar-based feedforward control successfully reduces both the response of the tower first mode and the fluctuation in the rotor speed at the same time.

Keywords: battery energy storage system, frequency response, low-inertia power system, over-frequency, voltage stability
The primary objective of this paper is to alleviate the over-frequency problem in low-inertia power systems through optimal allocation of a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). With prolific integration of wind power, conventional fossil-fuel driven synchronous generators are being replaced in the generation fleet. Variable speed wind machines are connected to the grid via power electronics converters. As such, these machines usually do not participate in frequency regulation. During high wind penetration, a generation-rich zone of an interconnected power system may face significant over-frequency following the loss of interconnection. If the frequency goes above a certain threshold, an Over-Frequency Generator Shedding (OFGS) scheme is activated. This may cause considerable amount of generation cut in a low-inertia power system. To address this challenge, this paper develops a siting and sizing methodology of frequency-responsive BESS to simultaneously maintain frequency and voltage... [more]

The impact of moisture ingress on the surface of copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS) solar cells was studied. While industry-scale modules are encapsulated in specialized polymers and glass, over time, the glass can break and the encapsulant can degrade. During such conditions, water can potentially degrade the interior layers and decrease performance. The first layer the water will come in contact with is the transparent conductive oxide (TCO) layer. To simulate the impact of this moisture ingress, complete devices were immersed in deionized water. To identify the potential sources of degradation, a common window layer for CIGS devices—a bilayer of intrinsic zinc oxide (i-ZnO) and conductive indium tin oxide (ITO)—was deposited. The thin films were then analyzed both pre and post water soaking. To determine the extent of ingress, dynamic secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) was performed on completed devices to analyze impurity diffusion (predominantly sodium and potassium) in t... [more]

Keywords: anaerobic digestion, biological pretreatment, co-digestion, methane yield, microalgae, primary sludge
A two-stage temperature-phased mesophilic anaerobic digestion assay was carried out to study the interaction between various biological pretreatment conditions and the possible synergistic co-digestion of microalgae and primary sludge. The study of growth kinetics of the biochemical methane potential test revealed that a maximum of 36% increase in methane yield was observed from co-digestion of a substrate pretreated by thermophilic aerobic conditions (55 °C and HRT = 2 days) and an 8.3% increase was obtained from the anaerobic pretreated substrate (55 °C and HRT = 3 days). Moreover, no synergistic effects on methane yields were observed in co-digesting the substrate pretreated with high temperature (85 °C). The study also identified specific conditions in which interaction between biological pretreatment and co-digestion might substantially reduce methane yield. Careful optimization of operating conditions, both aerobic and anaerobic pretreatment at moderate thermophilic conditions, c... [more]

Li primary batteries are currently treated along with other Li batteries in several big pyro- metallurgical plants in Northern EU countries. Nevertheless, pyro-metallurgical processes do not allow for Mn and Li recycling and present negative environmental impacts, on the other hand hydrometallurgical processing can potentially ensure the integral recovery of all materials in Li primary batteries. In this work, preliminary experimental findings obtained in the LIFE-LIBAT project (LIFE16 ENV/IT/000389) are reported. In this project, end of life Li(0)-MnO2 batteries were cryo-mechanically treated and then the metals were recovered by a hydrometallurgical process. Representative samples of end of life Li(0) batteries were characterized by type and composition. Batteries were stabilized in an N2 bath and then crushed, sieved, and magnetically separated in the SEVal pilot units. Separated fractions (fine fraction, magnetic coarse fraction, and non-magnetic coarse fraction) were chemically ch... [more]

In this study, the contact mechanism between Ag−Al and Si and the change in contact resistance (Rc) were analyzed by varying the firing profile. The front electrode of an n-type c-Si solar cell was formed through a screen-printing process using Ag−Al paste. Rc was measured by varying the belt speed and peak temperature of the fast-firing furnace. Rc value of 6.98 mΩ-cm−2 was obtained for an optimal fast-firing profile with 865 °C peak temperature and 110 inches per min belt speed. The contact phenomenon and the influence of impurities between the front-electrode−Si interface and firing conditions were analyzed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The EDS analysis revealed that the peak firing temperature at 865 °C exhibited a low atomic weight percentage of Al (0.72 and 0.36%) because Al was involved in the formation of alloy of Si with the front electrode. Based on the optimal results, a solar cell with a conversion efficiency of 1... [more]

Keywords: ash-water mixture, endogenous fire hazard, inertisation, spontaneous combustion of coal, underground mining
One of the major natural hazards occurring during the process of mining exploitation are endogenous fires. They cause very large material losses and constitute a threat to the health and life of the workers. Such fires usually start and develop in the goafs. The remaining coal and the oxygen-containing air flowing at a certain rate may lead to endogenous fires. The basic element of the assessment of the occurrence of an endogenous fire and the degree of its development is the chemical composition of the air flowing out of the longwall and the goafs. The monitoring of this composition also makes it possible to assess the severity of such a fire. The damage that can be caused by the endogenous fire requires scientific and experimental research being carried out on a wide scale in order to limit its occurrence and development. All papers and research mentioned in the paper aim to find a tool that will help to control the fires. The paper discusses the development of a new and original met... [more]

Keywords: Lithium iron phosphate battery, particle filter, SOC estimation, unscented Kalman filter
An accurate state of charge (SOC) estimation of the battery is one of the most important techniques in battery-based power systems, such as electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage systems (ESSs). The Kalman filter is a preferred algorithm in estimating the SOC of the battery due to the capability of including the time-varying coefficients in the model and its superior performance in the SOC estimation. However, since its performance highly depends on the measurement noise (MN) and process noise (PN) values, it is difficult to obtain highly accurate estimation results with the battery having a flat plateau OCV (open-circuit voltage) area in the SOC-OCV curve, such as the Lithium iron phosphate battery. In this paper, a new integrated estimation method is proposed by combining an unscented Kalman filter and a particle filter (UKF-PF) to estimate the SOC of the Lithium iron phosphate battery. The equivalent circuit of the battery used is composed of a series resistor and two R-C parall... [more]

Thermoelectric generation technology is considered to be one of the viable methods to convert waste heat energy directly into electricity. The utilization of this technology has been impeded due to low energy conversion efficiency. This paper aims to improve the energy conversion efficiency of the thermoelectric generator (TEG) model with a novel maximum power point tracking (MPPT) technique. A variable fractional order fuzzy logic controller (VFOFLC)-based MPPT technique is proposed in the present work in which the operating point of the TEG is moved quickly towards an optimal position to increase the energy harvesting. The fraction order term α, introduced in the MPPT algorithm, will expand or contract the input domain of the fuzzy logic controller (FLC to shorten the tracking time and maintain a steady-state output around the maximum power point (MPP). The performance of the proposed MPPT technique was verified with the TEG model by simulation using MATLAB /SIMULINK software. Then,... [more]
