Decision Making Support for Local Authorities Choosing the Method for Siting of In-City EV Charging Stations
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: distribution of charging stations, electric vehicle, electromobility, evaluation, local authorities, minimum state of charge, range anxiety, routing, spatial analysis, travel planner
Development of electromobility in urban areas requires an appropriate level of vehicle charging infrastructure. Numerous methods for siting of charging stations have been developed to date, and they appear to be delivering diverse outcomes for the same area, which is why local authorities face the problem of choosing the right station layout. The solution proposed in this article is to use a travel planner to evaluate the distribution of charging stations over the area of a metropolis. The decision making support is achieved by determining optimal travel routes for electric vehicles according to their initial state of charge for the three selected station siting methods. The evaluation focused on the following three aspects: (1) number of travels that cannot be made (due to the lack of a charging station at a certain distance around the start point), (2) extension of the travel caused by the need to recharge the vehicle on-route, and (3) additional energy consumption by electric vehicl... An Equivalent Heat Transfer Model Instead of Wind Speed Measuring for Dynamic Thermal Rating of Transmission Lines
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: conductor ampacity, dynamic thermal rating, finite element method, heat loss, overhead conductor, weather parameters
With the increase in electricity demand, the ampacity calculation based on the dynamic thermal rating (DTR) technology is increasingly significant for assessing and improving the power transfer capacity of the existing overhead conductors. However, the DTR models now available present some inadequacies in measurement techniques related to wind speed. Therefore, it is essential to propose a new model instead of wind speed measuring in DTR technology. In this paper, the influence analysis of various weather parameters on the conductor ampacity is carried out by using the real weather data. Based on the analysis, it is confirmed that the impact of wind speed is significant, especially in the case of the low wind speed. Moreover, an equivalent heat transfer (EHT) model for DTR technology is proposed instead of wind speed measuring. For this EHT model, the calculation of conductor ampacity is realized through investigating the correlation of heat losses between the heating aluminum (Al) bal... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: asset management, battery prognostics, condition monitoring, data-driven, Energy Storage, hybrid energy system, Optimization
Decarbonization of marine transport is a key global issue, with the carbon emissions of international shipping projected to increase 23% to 1090 million tonnes by 2035 in comparison to 2015 levels. Optimization of the energy system (especially propulsion system) in these vessels is a complex multi-objective challenge involving economical maintenance, environmental metrics, and energy demand requirements. In this paper, data from instrumented vessels on the River Thames in London, which includes environmental emissions, power demands, journey patterns, and variance in operational patterns from the captain(s) and loading (passenger numbers), is integrated and analyzed through automatic, multi-objective global optimization to create an optimal hybrid propulsion configuration for a hybrid vessel. We propose and analyze a number of computational techniques, both for monitoring and remaining useful lifetime (RUL) estimation of individual energy assets, as well as modeling and optimization of... Cost Analysis of Optimized Islanded Energy Systems in a Dispersed Air Base Conflict
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery storage, Energy, logistics, Optimization, photovoltaics
The United States Air Force has implemented a dispersed air base strategy to enhance mission effectiveness for near-peer conflicts. Asset dispersal places many smaller bases across a wide geographic area, which increases resupply requirements and logistical complexity. Hybrid energy systems reduce resupply requirements through sustainable, off-grid energy production. This paper presents a novel hybrid energy renewable delivery system (HERDS) model capable of (1) selecting the optimal hybrid energy system design that meets demand at the lowest net present cost and (2) optimizing the delivery of the selected system using existing Air Force cargo aircraft. The novelty of the model’s capabilities is displayed using Clark Air Base, Philippines as a case study. The HERDS model selected an optimal configuration consisting of a 676-kW photovoltaic array, an 1846-kWh battery system, and a 200-kW generator. This hybrid energy system predicts a 54% reduction in cost and an 88% reduction in fuel u... [more]

Review of Positive and Negative Impacts of Electric Vehicles Charging on Electric Power Systems
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: congestion management, controlled charging, delayed charging, electric vehicles, peak shaving, renewable energy sources, uncontrolled charging, V2B, V2G, V2H, valley filling
There is a continuous and fast increase in electric vehicles (EVs) adoption in many countries due to the reduction of EVs prices, governments’ incentives and subsidies on EVs, the need for energy independence, and environmental issues. It is expected that EVs will dominate the private cars market in the coming years. These EVs charge their batteries from the power grid and may cause severe effects if not managed properly. On the other hand, they can provide many benefits to the power grid and get revenues for EV owners if managed properly. The main contribution of the article is to provide a review of potential negative impacts of EVs charging on electric power systems mainly due to uncontrolled charging and how through controlled charging and discharging those impacts can be reduced and become even positive impacts. The impacts of uncontrolled EVs charging on the increase of peak demand, voltage deviation from the acceptable limits, phase unbalance due to the single-phase chargers, ha... [more]

Performance and Emissions of a Spark Ignition Engine Operated with Gasoline Supplemented with Pyrogasoline and Ethanol
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: exhaust emissions and spark-ignition engine, lipid bio-oils, performance, pyrogasoline
The partial replacement of fossil fuels by biofuels contributes to a reduction of CO2 emissions, alleviating the greenhouse effect and climate changes. Furthermore, fuels produced from waste biomass materials have no impact on agricultural land use and reduce deposition of such wastes in landfills. In this paper we evaluate the addition of pyrolysis biogasoline (pyrogasoline) as an additive for fossil gasoline. Pyrogasoline was produced from used cooking oils unfit to produce biodiesel. This study was based on a set of engine tests using binary and ternary mixtures of gasoline with 0, 2.5, and 5% pyrogasoline and ethanol. The use of ternary blends of gasoline and two different biofuels was tested with the purpose of achieving optimal combustion conditions and lower emissions, taking advantage of synergistic effects due to the different properties and chemical compositions of those biofuels. The tests were performed on a spark-ignition engine, operated at full load (100% throttle, or WO... [more]

Flexibility of CFB Combustion: An Investigation of Co-Combustion with Biomass and RDF at Part Load in Pilot Scale
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Biomass, circulating fluidized bed, co-combustion, flexibility, refuse derived fuel, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Co-combustion of biomass and solid fuels from wastes in existing highly efficient power plants is a low-cost solution that can be applied quickly and with low effort to mitigate climate change. Circulating fluidized bed combustion has several advantages when it comes to co-combustion, such as high fuel flexibility. The operational flexibility of circulating fluidized bed (CFB) co-combustion is investigated in a 1 MWth pilot plant. Straw pellets and refuse-derived fuel (RDF) are co-combusted with lignite at full load and part loads. This study focusses on the impact on the hydrodynamic conditions in the fluidized bed, on the heat transfer to the water/steam side of the boiler, and on the flue gas composition. The study demonstrates the flexibility of CFB combustion for three low-rank fuels that differ greatly in their properties. The co-combustion of RDF and straw does not have a negative effect on hydrodynamic stability. How the hydrodynamic conditions determine the temperature and pre... [more]

Paper Mill Sludge as a Source of Sugars for Use in the Production of Bioethanol and Isoprene
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Biofuels, calcium carbonate, hydrolysis, lignocellulosic biomass, sludge, sugars
Paper mill sludge (PMS) solids are predominantly comprised of cellulosic fibers and fillers rejected during the pulping or paper making process. Most sludges are dewatered and discharged into landfills or land spread at a cost to the mill; creating large economic and environmental burdens. This lignocellulosic residual stream can be used as a source of sugars for microbial fermentation to renewable chemicals. The aim of this study was to determine the possibility of converting mill sludge to sugars and then fermentation to either isoprene or ethanol. Chemical analysis indicated that the cellulosic fiber composition between 28 to 68% and hemicellulose content ranged from 8.4 to 10.7%. Calcium carbonate concentration in the sludge ranged from 0.4 to 34%. Sludge samples were enzyme hydrolyzed to convert cellulose fibers to glucose, percent conversion ranged from 10.5 to 98%. Calcium carbonate present with the sludge resulted in low hydrolysis rates; washing of sludge with hydrochloric aci... [more]

Swing Suppliers and International Natural Gas Market Integration
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Engle–Granger error correction, market integration, Natural Gas, Qatar, swing supplier
This study explores the international natural gas market integration using the Engle−Granger cointegration and error correction model. Previous studies have suggested that liquefied natural gas (LNG) and oil-linked pricing with a long-term contract have played key roles in gas market integration, especially between European and Asian markets. There is, however, little discussion of the role of the emergence of a swing supplier. A swing supplier, e.g., Qatar or Russia, is flexible to unexpected changes in supply and demand in both European and Asian markets and adapts the gas production/exports swiftly to meet the changes in the markets. Qatar has been a swing supplier since 2005 in the global natural gas market. In 2009, Qatar’s global LNG export share reached above 30% and has remained around 25% since then. Empirical results indirectly support that the emergence of a swing supplier may tighten market integration between Europe and Asia. The swing supplier may have accelerated the deg... [more]

Highly Efficient Production of DMF from Biomass-Derived HMF on Recyclable Ni-Fe/TiO2 Catalysts
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Biofuels, dimethylfuran, hydroxymethylfurfural, Ni-Fe/TiO2, non-noble metal catalysts hydrodeoxygenation, platform molecules, titania
5-Hydroxymethylfurfural, which can be derived from lignocellulosic biomass, can be transformed via the hydrodeoxygenation process to potential biofuels, such as 2,5 dimethylfuran or other chemicals of industrial importance. Non-noble metal catalysts constitute a robust and cheap solution for this process. In this work, the modification of the Ni/TiO2 catalyst by the addition of iron and support modification was evaluated. It was shown that bimetallic Ni-Fe catalysts are more selective and stable than their monometallic counterparts. This improvement in properties depends on the Ni:Fe ratio, but the support plays an equally important role—namely the high surface area anatase titania support improves the metal dispersion, resulting in a higher catalytic activity, and the formation of NiFe alloy facilitates the C=O bond cleavage. Such catalysts are active and stable and can be easily separated from the reaction mixture thanks to their magnetic properties.

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: NaOH aqueous, optical-electro characteristics, short-circuit current, Si/PEDOT: PSS solar cell, surface modification
Si/PEDOT: PSS solar cell is an important alternative for photovoltaic device due to its anticipated high theoretical efficiency and simple manufacturing process. In this study, processing silicon substrate with diluted NaOH aqueous solution was found to be an effective method for improving device performance, one that notably improves junction quality and light trapping ability. When immersed in diluted NaOH aqueous solution, the junction quality was improved according to the enlarged fill factor, reduced series resistance, and enhanced minor carrier lifetime. The diluted NaOH aqueous solution immersion etched the silicon surface and helped with the enhancement of light trapping ability, further improving the short-circuit current density. Although diluted NaOH aqueous solution immersion for bare silicon could improve the performance of devices, proper immersion time was needed. The influence of immersion time on device performances was investigated. The photovoltaic conversion efficie... [more]

State of Charge Control Integrated with Load Frequency Control for BESS in Islanded Microgrid
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery energy storage system, islanded microgrid, load frequency control, state of charge
The dependence of distributed generations (DGs) on climate conditions and fluctuating load demands are the challenges for the implementation of battery energy storage systems (BESSs) in islanded microgrids. BESS participation in system frequency regulation becomes one of the solutions to those challenges. Frequency regulation by BESS can be realized by applying the load-frequency control (LFC) in BESS. However, this participation clearly poses problems for the battery state of charge (SOC), as the battery is often overcharged or undercharged. In this paper, a control that maintains SOC at a certain level is introduced. This control strategy focuses on the battery operation function, which is determined from five control scenarios. All scenarios are achieved by applying the droop reference shifting method in the LFC to allow battery operation change. Control verification is carried out on an islanded microgrid system that experiences load demand changes and photovoltaic (PV) output powe... [more]

Keywords: CARSOXY, complex cycle, gas turbine cycle, power generation
This paper aims to conduct a parametric study for five gas turbine cycles (namely, simple, heat exchanged, free turbine and simple cycle, evaporative, and humidified) using a CO2-argon-steam-oxyfuel (CARSOXY) mixture as a working fluid to identify their optimal working conditions with respect to cycle efficiency and specific work output. The performance of the five cycles using CARSOXY is estimated for wet and dry compression, and a cycle is suggested for each range of working conditions. The results of this paper are based on MATLAB codes, which have been developed to conduct the cycle analysis for CARSOXY gas turbines, assuming a stoichiometric condition with an equivalence ratio of 1.0. Analyses are based on the higher heating value (HHV) of methane as fuel. This paper also identifies domains of operating conditions for each cycle, where the efficiency of CARSOXY cycles can be increased by up to 12% compared to air-driven cycles. Solution-Processed Titanium Oxide for Rear Contact Improvement in Heterojunction Solar Cells
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: chemical grown, electron-selective, heterojunction solar cell, surface passivation, titanium oxide
In this work, we demonstrated a heterojunction Si solar cell utilizing chemically grown titanium oxide (TiOx) as an electron-selective contact layer at its rear surface. With TiOx, the rear surface was passivated to reduce carrier recombination. The reverse saturation current, which is an indicator of carrier recombination, exhibited a 4.4-fold reduction after placing a TiOx layer on the rear surface. With reduced recombination, the open-circuit voltage increased from 433 mV to 600 mV and consequently, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) increased from 9.57 to 14.70%. By X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, the surface passivation was attributed to a silicon oxide interfacial layer formed during the chemical growth process. This passivation results in a 625 cm/s surface recombination velocity for the TiOx-passivated Si surface, which is 2.4 times lower than the sample without TiOx, ensuring the carriers pass through the rear contact without extensive recombination. According to these re... [more]

Studies on the Efficiency of the Impact of Paraffin Inhibitors on Lowering the WAT Temperature and Reducing the Amount of Paraffin Deposit
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: paraffin inhibitors, paraffin wax deposition, paraffins, WAT, WPC
This paper discusses the issues of the impact of pressure and temperature on the precipitation of paraffin deposits from reservoir fluids in the presence of previously prepared paraffin inhibitors. Using a properly modified PVT apparatus, the temperature of the beginning of paraffin precipitation (wax appearance temperature—WAT) has been determined, below which the solid paraffin phase was captured on a specialized filter in various temperatures. Based on the conducted experiments, a boundary has been established separating the paraffin area (the presence of paraffins as their solid phase) from an area without paraffin. Measurements of the amount of paraffin using the filter allowed the determination of the WPC (wax precipitation curve), due to which additional data is provided regarding the amount of precipitated paraffin deposit below the WAT. The developed methodology enables to conduct the measurements within a wide range of pressures using the sample saturated with reservoir gas,... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: gas drive water, movable water saturation, NMR, tight sandstone gas reservoir, water production
The movable water saturation of tight sandstone reservoirs is an important parameter in characterizing water production capacity, and there is a great need to understand the relationship between movable water saturation and water production characteristics. However, movable water behavior in this context remains unclear. In this study, four groups of tight sandstone cores from the Sulige gas field are measured to understand the movable water saturation characteristics. Then, the effects such as reservoir micropore throat, clay mineral and physical properties on movable water saturation are analyzed, and the movable water saturation and water production characteristics are discussed. The results show that higher movable water saturation will result in a greater amount of water in the gas drive. There is a critical pressure difference of the gas drive, and a large amount of movable water will flow out. Movable water saturation is independent of the porosity, permeability and initial wate... Wind energy has been widely used in renewable energy systems. A probabilistic prediction that can provide uncertainty information is the key to solving this problem. In this paper, a short-term direct probabilistic prediction model of wind power is proposed. First, the initial data set is preprocessed by a box plot and gray correlation analysis. Then, a generalized method is proposed to calculate the natural gradient and the improved natural gradient boosting (NGBoost) model is proposed based on this method. Finally, blending fusion is used in order to enhance the learning effect of improved NGBoost. The model is validated with the help of measured data from Dalian Tuoshan wind farm in China. The results show that under the specified confidence, compared with the single NGBoost metamodel and other short-term direct probability prediction models, the model proposed in this paper can reduce the forecast area coverage probability while ensuring a higher average width of prediction interva... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: collapsing method, mining seismicity, reactivated faults
In rock mass disturbed by mining activity, distortions in the stress balance may lead to seismic energy being emitted in reactivated seismogenic structures. One way of increasing the imaging resolution of these seismically active structures is through relocation, which itself can be achieved using the cloud collapsing method. This method partially eliminates perturbations in the location of seismic energy sources concerning the actual positions of these sources. It enables events to be grouped into spatially ordered structures that may correspond to actual tectonic structures, such as fractures, fissures, or faults. We present the results of applying the collapsing method in mining seismology using a cloud of located events recorded during mining activity at one of the coalfaces in the Bobrek hard coal mine. Investigation of Pulverized Biomass and Coal Char Emissivity
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Biomass, emissivity, pulverized fuel, two-color pyrometry
Current work presents an optical setup, its calibration and reference process and the first results from single particle emissivity measurements of pulverized biomass and coal fuel particles. In contrast to earlier attempts, the setup offers the possibility of emissivity measurements during the whole particle burn-off. A laser ignites a single particle, placed in the center of the setup. Two photomultipliers observe the emitted particle radiation in the visible range (550 nm and 700 nm) for temperature calculation, using two-color pyrometry. An InSb-detector records the emitted particle radiation between 2.4 µm and 5.5 µm, which is later used to calculate particle emissivity in this range. The conclusion of multiple particle measurements lead to decreasing particle emissivity with increasing temperature. For coal particles the emissivity decreases from 0.45 at 2300 K to 0.03 at 3400 K. Biomass char shows a similar trend with a decrease from 0.18 (2100 K) to 0.03 (2900 K).
