April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Carnot batteries, electric energy storage, power-to-heat, thermal exergy storage, thermally integrated pumped thermal electricity storage
This paper provides an overview of a novel electric energy storage technology. The Thermally Integrated Pumped Thermal Electricity Storage (TI-PTES) stores electric energy as thermal exergy. Compared to standard PTES, TI-PTES takes advantage of both electric and low-temperature heat inputs. Therefore, TI-PTES is a hybrid technology between storage and electric production from low-temperature heat. TI-PTES belongs to a technology group informally referred to as Carnot Batteries (CBs). As the TI-PTES grows in popularity, several configurations have been proposed, with different claimed performances, but no standard has emerged to date. The study provides an overview of the component and operating fluid selection, and it describes the configurations proposed in the literature. Some issues regarding the performance, the ratio between thermal and electrical inputs, and the actual TI-PTES utilisation in realistic scenarios are discussed. As a result, some guidelines are defined. The configur... [more]

Application of a high-efficiency voice communication systems based on broadband over power line-power line communication (BPL-PLC) technology in medium voltage networks, including hazardous areas (like the oil and mining industry), as a redundant mean of wired communication (apart from traditional fiber optics and electrical wires) can be beneficial. Due to the possibility of utilizing existing electrical infrastructure, it can significantly reduce deployment costs. Additionally, it can be applied under difficult conditions, thanks to battery-powered devices. During an emergency situation (e.g., after coal dust explosion), the medium voltage cables are resistant to mechanical damage, providing a potentially life-saving communication link between the supervisor, rescue team, paramedics, and the trapped personnel. The assessment of such a system requires a comprehensive and accurate examination, including a number of factors. Therefore, various models were tested, considering: different... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: alkaline direct liquid fuel cells, double cross-linking structures, pore-filled anion-exchange membranes, porous PTFE substrates, vanadium redox flow batteries
In this work, high-performance pore-filled anion-exchange membranes (PFAEMs) with double cross-linking structures have been successfully developed for application to promising electrochemical energy conversion systems, such as alkaline direct liquid fuel cells (ADLFCs) and vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs). Specifically, two kinds of porous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) substrates, with different hydrophilicities, were utilized for the membrane fabrication. The PTFE-based PFAEMs revealed, both excellent electrochemical characteristics, and chemical stability in harsh environments. It was proven that the use of a hydrophilic porous substrate is more desirable for the efficient power generation of ADLFCs, mainly owing to the facilitated transport of hydroxyl ions through the membrane, showing an excellent maximum power density of around 400 mW cm−2 at 60 °C. In the case of VRFB, however, the battery cell employing the hydrophobic PTFE-based PFAEM exhibited the highest energy efficie... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: blow-off limit, combustion, flame stability, Hydrogen, oxygen, swirl burner, waste biogas
Increasing production rates of the biomethane lead to increased generation of waste biogases. These gases should be utilized on-site to avoid pollutant emissions to the atmosphere. This study presents a flexible swirl burner (~100 kW) with an adiabatic chamber capable of burning unstable composition waste biogases. The main combustion parameters and chemiluminescence emission spectrums were examined by burning waste biogases containing from 5 to 30 vol% of CH4 in CO2 under air, O2-enriched atmosphere, or with the addition of hydrogen. The tested burner ensured stable combustion of waste biogases with CH4 content not less than 20 vol%. The addition of up to 5 vol% of H2 expanded flammability limits, and stable combustion of the mixtures with CH4 content of 15 vol% was achieved. The burner flexibility to work under O2-enriched air conditions showed more promising results, and the flammability limit was expanded up to 5 vol% of CH4 in CO2. However, the combustion under O2-enriched conditi... [more]

Andrea Lorenzon, Luca Casarsa
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: gas turbine engine, heat-transfer measurements, liquid crystals thermography, rotating cooling channel, technique validation
The transient liquid crystal thermography can be a suitable tool to study heat-transfer performances on internal cooling schemes of gas turbine blades. One of the hot topics related to this methodology is about the level of reliability of the heat-transfer assessments in rotating tests where the fluid experiences time-dependent rotating effects. The present study contribution aims to experimentally validate by cross-comparison of the outcomes obtained by employing the transient technique with those from the steady-state liquid crystal thermography in which the rotational effects occur as time-stable by definition. Heat-transfer measurements have been conducted on a rib-roughened square cross-section channel, with an inlet Reynolds number equal to 20,000 and rotation number up to 0.2. Special attention has been paid to the definition of the more reliable calibration strategy for liquid crystals that are employed in the transient thermography and to the proper estimation of the heat loss... Keywords: backfill body, collaborative exploitation, heat storage/heat release, phase-change, stope cooling
In view of high ground stress, high geothermal temperature, and thermal hazard during deep mineral resource exploitation, the concept of phase-change heat storage backfill was put forward in this study. Further, the corresponding technical system was constructed and the main content involved in technical system, which is the optimized proportion of the backfill slurry added with phase-change materials (PCMs), was examined. Moreover, we elaborated upon the collaborative optimization of a backfill body’s mechanical and thermal properties and the mutual cooperation on backfill mining, geothermal energy exploitation, and simultaneous stope cooling. The heat transfer behavior of a backfill body plays a key role in technology system. We numerically simulated the heat transfer among a backfill body, surrounding rock, and airflow in the heat storage process, as well as the heat transfer between backfill body and cold fluid during the heat release process. Keywords: efficiency, laser modification, photovoltaic cell modification, photovoltaic cells, silicon cells
The main aim of this paper is to analyze the influence of laser shaping of the photovoltaic cell based on its efficiency. The authors described both process of the monocrystalline photovoltaic cell manufacturing, its efficiency, and the possibilities of usage in architecture and the process of creating the photovoltaic cells of unconventional shapes by using laser technology. A method for cutting photovoltaic cells using a fiber laser was presented as well as the parameters of the laser cutting process. The described method allows cutting the massively produced silicon cells according to the predetermined trajectory. Using the proposed process parameters, satisfactory cutting edge quality, and negligible impact of the laser beam on changes in the structure of the photovoltaic cell active layers were achieved. In each cycle of structure cutting, only a small part of the material is removed (from 1 to 2 μm), and depending on the thickness, the process is repeated from 50 to 300 times. It... [more]
Optimal Electric Vehicle Charging Considering the Effects of a Financial Incentive on Battery Ageing
Thomas Steffen, Ashley Fly, William Mitchell
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery, charging, degradation, electric, lithium-ion, Matlab, optimal, Simulink, V2G, vehicle
As the market share of electric vehicles increases, the intermittent load on the electricity grid due to charging will increase. This can be counteracted by Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) which utilises dormant electric vehicles to feed power into the grid, generating income for the vehicle owner while relieving load across the grid. However, increased battery use through V2G can negatively affect battery health. In this work, a computational model of an electric vehicle with battery degradation is used to investigate the relationship of these effects. The analysis was conducted at the top level of detail, only considering the battery pack of the vehicle. The findings of this investigation show that the cost relating to battery degradation is smaller than the potential profit available from Vehicle-to-Grid over a three-year period. However, the benefit does not seem to be enough to justify the upfront investment requirement, and further financial incentives, such as net billing, may be required... [more]

Keywords: combined heat and power (chp), heat storage tank, numerical simulation, thermal storage technology, thermoelectric decoupling
The central heating technology with thermal storage technology is an important means to realize thermoelectric decoupling, meet heating demand, reduce primary energy consumption, and protect the ecological environment. For this paper, the numerical simulation method was used to study the temperature variation of large-capacity hot water storage tank (HWST) in an actual combined heat and power system. The influence of various factors, including the length diameter ratio, water supply temperature, and water supply flow, as well as the orifice diameter and number of the water distributor, on the flow uniformity and performance of the HWST was investigated. The results show that the heat storage efficiency and flow uniformity of the HWST can be improved by properly increasing the water supply flow, the orifice diameter, and number of the water distributor. Increasing the length diameter ratio can improve the flow uniformity, but it will reduce the heat storage efficiency of the HWST. Incre... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hydraulic fracturing, induced seismicity, microseismic events, seismic location, waveform stacking
Seismic source location specifies the spatial and temporal coordinates of seismic sources and lays the foundation for advanced seismic monitoring at all scales. In this work, we firstly introduce the principles of diffraction stacking (DS) and cross-correlation stacking (CCS) for seismic location. The DS method utilizes the travel time from the source to receivers, while the CCS method considers the differential travel time from pairwise receivers to the source. Then, applications with three field datasets ranging from small-scale microseismicity to regional-scale induced seismicity are presented to investigate the feasibility, imaging resolution, and location reliability of the two stacking operators. Both of the two methods can focus the source energy by stacking the waveforms of the selected events. Multiscale examples demonstrate that the imaging resolution is not only determined by the inherent property of the stacking operator but also highly dependent on the acquisition geometry... [more]
On the Nature of Electro-Osmotic Drag

Keywords: electro-osmotic drag, elementary reactions steps, membrane water transport, polymer electrolyte membrane, proton exchange membrane electrolyzer cells, Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells, rate-determining step
Electro-osmotic drag (EOD) is usually thought of as a transport mechanism of water inside and through the polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) in electrochemical devices. However, it has already been shown that the transport of dissolved water in the PEM occurs exclusively via diffusion, provided that the EOD coefficient nd is constant. Consequently, EOD is not a water transport mechanism inside the electrolyte membrane, and this means that its nature is not yet understood. This work proposes a theory that suggests that the root of the EOD is located in the catalyst layers of the electrochemical device where the electric current is generated, and consequently could be linked to one or more of the elementary reaction steps. It is therefore also conceivable that EOD exists at one electrode in an electrochemical device, but not in the other. Moreover, the EOD coefficient nd may depend on the current density as well as the oxidization level of the catalyst. The last consequence, if EOD is li... [more]

Keywords: adaptive control, battery, energy management, inverter, photovoltaic, supervisory control, ultra-capacitor, wavelets
In this paper, energy management and control of a microgrid is developed through supervisor and adaptive neuro-fuzzy wavelet-based control controllers considering real weather patterns and load variations. The supervisory control is applied to the entire microgrid using lower−top level arrangements. The top-level generates the control signals considering the weather data patterns and load conditions, while the lower level controls the energy sources and power converters. The adaptive neuro-fuzzy wavelet-based controller is applied to the inverter. The new proposed wavelet-based controller improves the operation of the proposed microgrid as a result of the excellent localized characteristics of the wavelets. Simulations and comparison with other existing intelligent controllers, such as neuro-fuzzy controllers and fuzzy logic controllers, and classical PID controllers are used to present the improvements of the microgrid in terms of the power transfer, inverter output efficiency, load v... Keywords: discrete element method, hydraulic fracturing, injection sequence, modified fluid-mechanical coupling algorithm, stress shadow effect, well spacing
Hydraulic fracturing is a key technical means for stimulating tight and low permeability reservoirs to improve the production, which is widely employed in the development of unconventional energy resources, including shale gas, shale oil, gas hydrate, and dry hot rock. Although significant progress has been made in the simulation of fracturing a single well using two-dimensional Particle Flow Code (PFC2D), the understanding of the multi-well hydraulic fracturing characteristics is still limited. Exploring the mechanisms of fluid-driven fracture initiation, propagation and interaction under multi-well fracturing conditions is of great theoretical significance for creating complex fracture networks in the reservoir. In this study, a series of two-well fracturing simulations by a modified fluid-mechanical coupling algorithm were conducted to systematically investigate the effects of injection sequence and well spacing on breakdown pressure, fracture propagation and stress shadow. The resu... [more]

Keywords: DC–AC power conversion, multilevel inverters (MLIs), renewable energy sources, selective harmonic elimination (SHE), total harmonic distortion, unequal DC sources
This study proposes a classical control algorithm for solving the transcendental set of equations for the unequal DC sources of five-level multilevel inverters (MLIs). Such sources can be generated from renewable energy sources. Two DC sources with different values are used to produce an output voltage with five levels. Then, a set of two transcendental equations is formulated with two targeted functions to control the fundamental component and cancel the stipulated single harmonic order. The proposed solution uses a simple classical proportional control with two loops to generate two switching angles. The first switching angle is assigned with an initial value, whereas the second one is calculated from the inner loop. The outer loop is used to cancel the specified harmonic by sending the error signal to the proposed proportional control that tunes the switching angles. The proposed algorithm is easy, fast, and accurate, and has a wide-range solution in terms of modulation index (MI )... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: elliptical, PCHE, stress concentration factor, two-faced
Printed circuit heat exchangers (PCHEs) are often subject to high pressure and temperature difference between the hot and cold channels which may cause a mechanical integrity problem. A conventional plate heat exchanger where the channel geometries are semi-circular and etched at one side of the stacked plate is a common design in the market. However, the sharp edge tip channel may cause high stress intensity. Double-faced type PCHE appears with the promising ability to reduce the stress intensity and stress concentration factor. Finite element analysis simulation has been conducted to observe the mechanical integrity of double-etched printed circuit heat exchanger design. The application of an additional ellipse upper channel helps the stress intensity decrease in the proposed PCHE channel. Five different cases were simulated in this study. The simulation shows that the stress intensity was reduced up to 24% with the increase in additional elliptical channel radius. Besides that, the... [more]

Keywords: gate-entry stability, longwall mining, remaining coal thickness, weak geological condition
The present research primarily focuses on the investigation of gate-entry stability of longwall trial panel under weak geological condition in Indonesia coal mine by means of numerical analysis. This work aims at identifying appropriate roof support at 100 m and 150 m of depth during gate development. Due to depth depending competency of dominant rock, the stability of gate-entry at 100 m of depth can be optimized by leaving at least 1 m of remaining coal thickness (RCT) above and below the gate-entry. The appropriate support for the trial panel gate-entry is steel arch SS540 with 1 m and 0.5 m spacing for 100 m and 150 m of depth, respectively. The influence of panel excavation on gate-entry is also discussed. Regarding the aforementioned influence, the utilization of additional gate mobile support is recommended at least 10 m from the longwall face.

Keywords: flow rate measurements, penstocks, performance tests, pressure pipelines, pressure-time method, reversible hydraulic machines, volumetric gauging method, water-hammer
This article presents the original procedures for measuring the flow rate using the pressure-time and the volumetric gauging method in the case of performance tests of a reversible hydraulic machine in either turbine or pump modes of operation. Achieving the lowest possible measurement uncertainty was one of the basic conditions during implemented machine tests. It was met using appropriate measuring procedures and high-class measuring equipment. Estimation of the uncertainty for both methods was made on the basis of an analysis consistent with current requirements in this respect. The pressure-time method was supplemented by the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis that allowed reducing the impact of the pipeline complex irregular geometry on the uncertainty of flow measurement. Appropriate modifications of the calculation procedure enabled accurate measurements of flow during the pump mode of operation of the tested machine as well. The volumetric gauging method, thanks to a s... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: curtailment, grid interconnection, Kyushu, mitigation, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar
High variable renewable energy (VRE) penetration led to the first-ever VRE curtailment in Japan, occurring in Kyushu in October 2018. Since then, there has been an average of 3% solar curtailment, with a peak of 13.7% in April 2019, resulting in approximately ¥9.6 billion of wasted energy. The VRE curtailment is expected to worsen as VRE penetration continues to increase along with nuclear energy increment in line with Japan’s 2030 energy goals. To prevent this curtailment and increase energy stability, a novel, logic-based forecasting method using hourly supply/demand data was developed. Initially, inaccurate results were returned; however, after several rounds of calibration that adjusted the quartile value of the max/min operating windows, the overall accuracy of this method was increased to 97% of real curtailment. This calibrated model was then used to test several curtailment mitigation scenarios. Some scenarios increased curtailment, while the two most successful scenarios, whic... [more]

The present work aims at investigating the residence time distribution (RTD) of a multiple spouted bed reactor, which will be applied for the pyrolysis and gasification of residual biomass. The unit is composed of square-based spouted beds, placed in series and at descending heights, and communicating with each other through an opening in the lateral wall. The gas is fed evenly in parallel. The experimental analysis is based on tracer experiments in cold-flow units, assessing the influence of the number of units and the bed height. The tests proved the good mixing properties of the spouted beds, which create a stable fluidization regime and do not feature dead zones. Each spouted bed can generally be well assimilated to an ideal continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR). The RTD of the device seems adequate for the application, and also seems to be well tuneable through the selection of the bed height and number of units. Given the good similarity with ideal reactor networks, these repres... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: different ignition timings, free-piston engine linear generator, gasoline with hydrogen, hydrogen volume fraction
The free-piston engine linear generator (FPELG) is being investigated by many researchers because of its high thermal efficiency and its variable compression ratio. However, all researchers focused on the FPELG characteristics with mono-fuel. Therefore, in this paper, the performance of the FPELG that has adopted gasoline with hydrogen as fuel is investigated. The method of coupling the zero-dimensional dynamics model with the multi-dimensional CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) combustion model was applied during the simulation process. According to the results, the piston TDC (Top Dead Center), the piston peak piston velocity, and the system operation frequency show a negative correlation with the increase of hydrogen fractions. However, the peak in-cylinder pressure was increased with the hydrogen volume fraction increase, due to the fast flame speed and short combustion duration characteristics of hydrogen. Meanwhile, the indicated efficiency of the free-piston engine was increased... [more]

Keywords: brittle–ductile transition, geothermal energy, geothermal exploration, geothermal mapping, hydrothermal convection, seismicity, supercritical geothermal resources
A considerable number of rock bodies with varying percentages of supercritical fluid exist around the brittle−ductile transition (BDT) zone at a depth of several kilometers from the surface of the Earth, in northeastern Japan. As the BDT zone in the granitic basement of the continental crust is estimated to occur at about 380 °C, the identification of the depth corresponding to 380 °C is important to utilize the thermal energy inside the “supercritical geothermal systems”. In this study, we focused on an estimation method to determine the depth of the isothermal layer corresponding to 380 °C, using the activity index (AI) obtained from the maximum-temperature data of the geothermal wells and hot springs. The thermal profiles of deep and hot exploration boreholes and the hypocentral distribution of natural earthquakes were used to evaluate the characteristics and accuracy of the deep thermal structure, using the activity index. The estimated depth corresponding to 380 °C tended to be hi... [more]
