Transitioning All Energy in 74 Metropolitan Areas, Including 30 Megacities, to 100% Clean and Renewable Wind, Water, and Sunlight (WWS)
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: climate change, megacities, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar, urban air pollution, Wind
To date, roadmaps and policies for transitioning from fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy have been developed for nations, provinces, states, cities, and towns in order to address air pollution, global warming, and energy insecurity. However, neither roadmaps nor policies have been developed for large metropolitan areas (aggregations of towns and cities), including megacities (metropolitan areas with populations above 10 million). This study bridges that gap by developing roadmaps to transition 74 metropolitan areas worldwide, including 30 megacities, to 100% wind, water, and sunlight (WWS) energy and storage for all energy sectors by no later than 2050, with at least 80% by 2030. Among all metropolitan areas examined, the full transition may reduce 2050 annual energy costs by 61.1% (from $2.2 to $0.86 trillion/yr in 2013 USD) and social costs (energy plus air pollution plus climate costs) by 89.6% (from $8.3 to $0.86 trillion/yr). The large energy cost reduction is due to the 57.1... [more]

Effect of Spark Ignition Timing and Water Injection Temperature on the Knock Combustion of a GDI Engine
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combustion, emission, knock, temperature, water injection
A turbocharged downsizing spark ignition (SI) engine cooperating with an in-cylinder direct injection technology is one of the most effective ways to improve the power and economy of gasoline engines. However, engine knock has limited the application and development of the downsizing of gasoline engines. Water injection technology can effectively suppress the knock. In this study, a method of numerical simulation was used to explore the effect of the water injection temperature on the combustion and suppression of the knock. First of all, the knock of the gasoline engine was induced by advancing the spark timing. Then, when the other conditions were the same, different water injection temperatures were set. The results show that lowering the water injection temperature reduced the knock intensity in the cylinder, but increasing the water injection temperature made the water distribution more uniform, and the peak values of each monitoring point were more consistent. The circulating wor... [more]

Technical Review of Existing Norwegian Pumped Storage Plants
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hydropower, hydropower tunnel systems, pumped storage, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, seasonal energy storage
This paper presents a technical review of the existing pumped storage plants in Norway. The power system is changing towards integrating more and more renewable energy, especially from variable renewable energy sources, leading to new challenges for the security of supply, power, frequency, and voltage regulation. Thus, energy storage options are a highly researched topic in the current situation. Even though there are many energy storage technologies, most are optimal for short term grid balancing, and few are capable of providing long term (weekly or seasonal) storage. One exception is pumped storage, a mature technology capable of delivering both short term and long term energy storage. In this paper, the ten existing pumped storage plants in Norway are presented, several of which are capable of seasonal energy storage. The Norwegian knowledge and experience with pumped storage plants technology is provided as a basis for future research within the field. The review provides informa... [more]

Variational Control Approach to Energy Extraction from a Fluid Flow
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: optimal control, steady wind turbine, variational feedback control, wind turbine
Energy harvesting from the environment is an important aspect of many technologies. The scale of energy capturing and storage can involve the power range from mWatt up to MWatt, depending on the used devices and the considered environments (from ambient acoustic and vibration to ocean wave motion, or wind). In this paper, the wind turbine energy harvesting problem is approached as an optimal control problem, where the objective function is the absorption of an amount of energy in a given time interval by a fluid-flow environment, that should be maximized. The interest relies on outlining general control models of fluid-flow-based extraction plants and identifying an optimum strategy for the regulation of an electrical machine to obtain a maximum-efficiency process for the related energy storage. The mathematical tools are found in the light of optimal control theory, where solutions to the fundamental equations are in the frame of Variational Control (the basis of the Pontryagin optima... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: club convergence, energy consumption, half-life cycle, outliers, time series
The need for the statistical stability of data is increasing nowadays as the data resource has become a more and more important production factor. In this study, a set of general identification and correction models are established for data outlier modification. The research object we chose is the data of per capita energy consumption. Based on the joint diagnosis method of outliers and the regional convergence theory, the abrupt outliers are identified and corrected. The study finds that there is an outlier in the data of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. According to the club grouping method, 30 provinces in China are divided into two clubs and the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region is determined to be in the first club. We calculate the convergence rate and obtain the correction results combining the half-life cycle model.

Keywords: 100% Renewable grid, Energy hybridization, hydropower, rural areas, solar energy, wind energy
Many developing countries suffer from high energy-import dependency and inadequate electrification of rural areas, which aggravates the poverty problem. In this work, Al-Tafilah in Jordan was considered as a case study, where the technical, economic, and environmental benefits of a decentralized hybrid renewable energy system that can match 100% of the city demand were investigated. A tri-hybrid system of wind, solar, and hydropower was integrated with an energy storage system and optimized to maximize the match between the energy demand and production profiles. The optimization aimed at maximizing the renewable energy system (RES) fraction while keeping the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) equal to the electricity purchase tariff. The techno-economic analysis showed that the optimal system in Al-Tafilah comprises a 28 MW wind system, 75.4 MW PV, and 1 MW hydropower, with a 259 MWh energy storage system, for which a RES fraction of 99% can be achieved, and 47,160 MtCO2 are avoided... Effect of Operating Conditions and TWC Parameters on Emissions Characteristics of a Stoichiometric Natural Gas Engine
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: natural gas engine, noble metal loading, noble metal ratio, pore density, three-way catalyst
This study involved conducting an experimental and numerical investigation on the effects of the air-to-fuel ratio (AFR), engine speed, and engine load on the inlet gas component of a three-way catalyst (TWC) and on the effects of noble metal loading, noble metal ratio, and carrier pore density on the emission conversion efficiency. The results showed that AFR can significantly affect the raw emissions of NOx and total hydrocarbon (THC), and better emission conversion efficiency of a TWC can be reached when AFR is controlled between 0.995 to 1. Compared with engine speed, engine load has a relatively small effect on exhaust temperature but greatly affects the flow velocity and NOx and THC emissions. Increasing the content of Pt in the catalyst can improve the THC conversion efficiency. For low Pt and Pd-Rh catalysts, the THC conversion effect is significantly deteriorated. The content of Rh affects the NOx conversion, and NOx conversion efficiency at high speeds is significantly reduce... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fast clustering algorithm, fault prognostics, Gaussian mixture model, Jensen–Shannon divergence, photovoltaic inverter
The fault prognostics of the photovoltaic (PV) power generation system is expected to be a significant challenge as more and more PV systems with increasingly large capacities continue to come into existence. The PV inverter is the core component of the PV system, and it is essential to develop approaches that accurately predict the occurrence of inverter faults to ensure the PV system’s safety. This paper proposes a fault prognostics method which makes full use of the similarities between inverter clusters. First, a feature space was constructed using the t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (t-SNE) algorithm. Then, the fast clustering algorithm was used to search the center inverter of each sampling time from the feature space. The status of the center inverter was adopted to establish the health baseline. Finally, the Gaussian mixture model was established with two data clusters based on the central inverter and the inverter to be predicted. The divergence of the two clusters... [more]

As the penetration of electric vehicles (EVs) accelerates according to eco-friendly policies, the impact of electric vehicle charging demand on a power distribution network is becoming significant for reliable power system operation. In this regard, accurate power demand or load forecasting is of great help not only for unit commitment problem considering demand response but also for long-term power system operation and planning. In this paper, we present a forecasting model of EV charging station load based on long short-term memory (LSTM). Besides, to improve the forecasting accuracy, we devise an imputation method for handling missing values in EV charging data. For the verification of the forecasting model and our imputation approach, performance comparison with several imputation techniques is conducted. The Impact of the Ventilation System on the Methane Release Hazard and Spontaneous Combustion of Coal in the Area of Exploitation—A Case Study
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: methane release hazard, safety, spontaneous combustion hazard, underground mining, ventilation systems
Various types of natural hazards are inextricably linked to the process of underground hard coal mining. Ventilation hazards—methane and spontaneous combustion of coal—are the most dangerous; they pose a major threat to the safety of the workers and decrease the effectiveness of the whole coal production process. One of the methods designed to limit the consequences of such hazards is based on the selection of a ventilation system that will be suitable for the given mining area. The article presents a case study of an active longwall area, where—due to increasing ventilation hazard (methane and spontaneous combusting of coal)—the whole system was rebuilt. The U-type ventilation system was used in the initial stage of the extraction process, however, it often generated methane in amounts that exceeded the allowable values. Consequently, such conditions forced the change of the ventilation system from a U−type to Y−type system. The new system was installed during the ongoing mining proce... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: abnormal data, electricity consumption representative profiles, energy communities, forecasting, Machine Learning, outliers, self-consumption, wind power
Renewable Energy Communities consist in an emerging decentralized market mechanism which allows local energy exchanges between end-users, bypassing the traditional wholesale/retail market structure. In that configuration, local consumers and prosumers gather in communities and can either cooperate or compete towards a common objective, such as the minimization of the electricity costs and/or the minimization of greenhouse gas emissions for instance. This paper proposes data analytics modules which aim at helping the community members to schedule the usage of their resources (generation and consumption) in order to minimize their electricity bill. A day-ahead local wind power forecasting algorithm, which relies on state-of-the-art Machine Learning techniques currently used in worldwide forecasting contests, is in that way proposed. We develop furthermore an original method to improve the performance of neural network forecasting models in presence of abnormal wind power data. A techniqu... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: inverted pyramid structure, metal assisted chemical etching, removal of saw marks, solar cells
The absence of an effective texturing technique for diamond-wire sawn multi-crystalline silicon (DWS mc-Si) solar cells has hindered commercial upgrading from traditional multi-wire slurry sawn silicon (MWSS mc-Si) solar cells. In this work, we present a novel method for the removal of diamond-wire-sawn marks in a multi-crystalline silicon wafer based on metal assisted chemical etching process with Cu/Ag dual elements and nano-structure rebuilding (NSR) treatment to make a uniform inverted pyramid textured structure. The temperature effect of NSR solution was systematically analyzed. It was found that the size of the inverted pyramid structure and the reflectance became larger with the increase of the NSR treatment temperature. Furthermore, the prepared unique inverted pyramid structure not only benefited light trapping, but also effectively removed the saw-marks of the wafer at the same time. The highest efficiency of 19.77% was obtained in solar cells with an inverted pyramid structu... [more]

Microgrid Frequency Fluctuation Attenuation Using Improved Fuzzy Adaptive Damping-Based VSG Considering Dynamics and Allowable Deviation
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dynamics, fluctuation attenuation, fuzzy adaptive damping, microgrid, virtual synchronous generator
Recently, virtual synchronous generators (VSGS) are a hot topic in the area of microgrid control. However, the traditional fixed-parameter-based VSG control methods have an obvious disadvantage. Namely, if the damping value is set to be small, the amplitude of frequency deviations under external power disturbances is large, meaning that the frequency suppression capacity is insufficient, but if the damping value is large, the dynamics of the system will be greatly sacrificed. To solve the problem, taking the dynamic characteristics and the maximum allowable frequency deviation (MAFD) into account, in this paper an improved fuzzy adaptive damping-based VSG control strategy is proposed to simultaneously attenuate the microgrid frequency fluctuations and guarantee the system dynamics. Firstly, in order to address the necessity of using an adaptive damping-based VSG, the structure of a fixed-parameter VSG method that incorporates the f-p/Q-V droop controllers is introduced, based on which... April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: demand response, electrical demand, industrial flexibility, oil refinery, steam demand
This paper proposes a novel approach to optimize the main energy consumptions of heavy oil refining industries (ORI) in response to electricity price uncertainties. The whole industrial sub-processes of the ORI are modeled mathematically to investigate the joint power-heat flexibility potentials of the industry. To model the refinery processes, an input/output flow-based model is proposed for five main refining units. Moreover, the role of storage tanks capacity in the power system flexibility is investigated. To hedge against the electricity price uncertainty, an uncertain bound for the wholesale electricity price is addressed. To optimize the industrial processes, a dual robust mixed-integer quadratic program (R-MIQP) is adopted; therefore, the ORI’s operational strategies are determined under the worst-case realization of the electricity price uncertainty. Keywords: biogas upgrading, calcination, electrolysis, Fermentation, green hydrogen, iron reduction, municipal waste incineration, oxy-combustion, process integration, pulp production
Integrated water electrolysis is a core principle of new process configurations for decarbonized heavy industries. Water electrolysis generates H2 and O2 and involves an exchange of thermal energy. In this manuscript, we investigate specific traditional heavy industrial processes that have previously been performed in nitrogen-rich air environments. In new process configurations, CO2 capture is facilitated by avoiding inert gases in reactant streams. The primary energy required to drive electrolysis may be obtained from emerging renewable power sources (wind, solar, etc.) which have enjoyed substantial industrial development and cost reductions over the last decade. The new industrial designs uniquely harmonize the intermittency of renewable energy, allowing chemical energy storage. Keywords: ARIMA, Batteries, CEEMDAN, LSSVM, State-of-Health, Time Health Indicator
Generally, the State-of-Health (SOH) monitoring and Remaining Useful Life (RUL) prediction and assessment of lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries need to use sensors to obtain the degradation test data of the same type of batteries and establish the degradation model for reference. However, when the battery type is unknown, a usable reference model cannot be obtained, so its prediction and evaluation may be relatively inconvenient. In this paper, the State of-Health prediction for lithium-ion batteries based on a novel hybrid scheme is proposed. A Theory for Power Extraction from Passive Accelerators and Confined Flows
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: accelerators, Betz, climate change, freestream theory, power extraction, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, Turbines, wind power
No valid fluid theory exists for power extraction from unpressurized confined flow. The absence of a valid model to determine baseline uniform power extraction in confined flows creates difficulties in characterizing the coefficient of power. Currently, the primary body of research has been limited to Diffuser Augmented Wind Turbines (DAWTs) and passive fluid accelerators. Fluid power is proportional to the cube of velocity; therefore, passive acceleration is a promising path to effective renewable energy. Hypothetical models and experiments for passive accelerators yield low ideal power limits and poor performance, respectively. We show that these results derive from the misapplication of Betz’s Law and lack of a general theory for confined flow extraction. Experimental performance is due to the low efficiency of DAWTs and prior hypotheses exhibit high predictive error and continuity violations.
