April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: load control, maximum power point control, oscillating water column, power converter topology, power performance, torque control coefficient, turbine efficiency, wave energy converter
A power take-off (PTO) system for an oscillating water column (OWC) wave energy converter comprises a turbine-generator-power converter. In this study, only the topologies of the power converter that affect the load control algorithm are compared. A power converter for renewable energy is composed of a diode-dc/dc converter and a pulse-width modulation (PWM) converter operating at small and large capacities, respectively. However, selecting a power converter according to the capacity based on the characteristics of the wave energy converter, in which the input energy is highly fluctuating, can significantly reduce the power performance. Thus, to verify load control characteristics according to the topology of the power converter, the turbine-generator-power converter was incorporated in the modeling, and the power performance based on the power converter topology under various wave conditions was analyzed. Further, torque control to obtain the maximum power among load control algorithm... [more]
The Potential Role of Power-to-Gas Technology Connected to Photovoltaic Power Plants in the Visegrad Countries—A Case Study
Gábor Pintér
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biogas, biomethane, Energy Storage, power-to-gas, regulation
With the spread of the use of renewable sources of energy, weather-dependent solar energy is also coming more and more to the fore. The quantity of generated electric power changes proportionally to the intensity of solar radiation. Thus, a cloudy day, for example, greatly reduces the amount of electricity produced from this energy source. In the countries of the European Union solar power plants are obligated to prepare power generation forecasts broken down to 15- or 60-min intervals. The interest of the regionally responsible transmission system operators is to be provided with forecasts with the least possible deviation from the actual figures. This paper examines the Visegrad countries’ intraday photovoltaic forecasts and their deviations from real power generation based on the photovoltaic power capacity monitored by the transmission system operators in each country. The novelty of this study lies in the fact that, in the context of monitored PV capacities in the Visegrad countri... [more]
Influence of Clumps-Weighted Moorings on a Spar Buoy Offshore Wind Turbine

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: clump weights, mooring lines, offshore wind energy, spar buoy floating platform
The spar buoy platform for offshore wind turbines is the most utilized type and the OC3 Hywind system design is largely used in research. This system is usually moored with three catenary cables with 120° between each other. Adding clump weights to the mooring lines has an influence on the platform response and on the mooring line tension. However, the optimal choice for their position and weight is still an open issue, especially considering the multitude of sea states the platform can be exposed to. In this study, therefore, an analysis on the influence of two such variables on the platform response and on the mooring line tension is presented. FAST by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is used to perform time domain simulations and Response Amplitude Operators are adopted as the main indicators of the clump weights effects. Results show that the clump weight mass is not as influential as the position, which turns out to be optimal, especially for the Surge degree of fre... [more]
Deoxydehydration and Catalytic Transfer Hydrogenation: New Strategy to Valorize Tartaric Acid and Succinic Acid to γ-Butyrolactone and Tetrahydrofuran
Jun Hee Jang, Mahdi M. Abu-Omar
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biomass conversion, catalytic transfer hydrogenation, deoxydehydration, rhenium oxide, tartaric acid, γ-butyrolactone
Hydrogenation of succinic acid and maleic acid produces C4 value-added chemicals such as γ-butyrolactone and tetrahydrofuran. Here, unsupported ReOx nanoparticles transform succinic acid to γ-butyrolactone and tetrahydrofuran via catalytic transfer hydrogenation with isopropanol as a liquid phase hydrogen donor. This catalyst is also active for the sequential reaction of deoxydehydration and transfer hydrogenation in isopropanol, synthesizing renewable succinic acid and its esters from tartaric acid. One-step conversion of tartaric acid to γ-butyrolactone is achieved in a moderate yield and the possible reaction pathway is discussed.
Study on Asymmetry Concentration of Mixed Oil in Products Pipeline
Yi Wang, Baoying Wang, Yang Liu, Yongtu Liang
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: asymmetry, batch transportation, concentration curve, product oil, tailing phenomenon
Long-distance pipelines transporting multiple product oils such as gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, are important facilities for transporting fossil energy. One major concern in operation is the energy consumption of the pipeline. Energy consumption should be made optimized tracking batches of oils and cutting mixed oil, which requires an accurate prediction of concentration curve. In engineering, the concentration curve is usually assumed to be symmetric, but it is actually asymmetric, which may lead to estimation errors. Thus, the asymmetric concentration of mixed oil should be studied. The formation mechanism of the asymmetry of concentration curve has not been clearly clarified. A new method is proposed to measure the asymmetry of the concentration curve. Quantitative analysis is carried out for each factor on the asymmetry distribution of concentration curve. Based on the convection−diffusion equation, a modified oil-mixing model considering near wall adsorption effect is establishe... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biodiesel, hydrothermal reaction, lipid recovery, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, sewage sludge
In this study, two types of sewage sludge (primary sludge and waste activated sludge) were hydrothermally treated at 125−250 °C to enhance the lipid extraction efficiency and obtain a higher biodiesel yield. The enhanced efficiency of the lipid extraction method was compared with the efficiency of the organic solvent extraction method. The results confirmed that a hydrothermal reaction could be an appropriate option for disrupting sludge cell walls and increasing the lipid extraction from sewage sludge. The highest lipid recovery efficiency was observed at 200 °C, and the lipid recovery efficiency of primary sludge and waste activated sludge increased from 7.56% and 5.35% to 14.01% and 11.55% by weight, respectively. Furthermore, transesterified lipids, such as biodiesel from sewage sludge, mostly consist of C16 and C18 methyl esters, and have features similar to those of jatropha oil-based biodiesel. During the hydrothermal treatment, the carbon content in the sludge decreased as the... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ancillary service, battery energy system storage, economic evaluation, electromobility, frequency regulation, second life of batteries
The new Li-ion battery systems used in electric vehicles have an average capacity of 50 kWh and are expected to be discarded when they reach approximately 80% of their initial capacity, because they are considered to no longer be sufficient for traction purposes. Based on the official national future development scenarios and subsequent mathematical modeling of the number of electric vehicles (EVs), up to 400 GWh of storage capacity in discharged batteries will be available on the EU market by 2035. Therefore, since the batteries still have a considerable capacity after the end of their first life, they could be used in many stationary applications during their second life, such as support for renewables, flexibility, energy arbitrage, peak shaving, etc. Due to the high output power achieved in a short time, one of the most promising applications of these batteries are ancillary services. The study assesses the economic efficiency of the used batteries and presents several main scenari... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbon steel pipe tee, damage index, failure criteria, low-cycle fatigue, piping system, yield point
Seismic motions are likely to cause large displacements in nuclear power plants because the main mode of their piping systems is dominated by the low-frequency region. Additionally, large relative displacement may occur in the piping systems because their supports are installed in several places, and each support is subjected to different seismic motions. Therefore, to assess the seismic performance of a piping system, the relative displacement repeated by seismic motions must be considered. In this study, in-plane cyclic loading tests were conducted under various constant amplitudes using test specimens composed of SCH 40 3-inch pipes and a tee in the piping system of a nuclear power plant. Additionally, an attempt was made to quantitatively express the failure criteria using a damage index based on the dissipated energy that used the force−displacement and moment−deformation angle relationships. The failure mode was defined as the leakage caused by a through-wall crack, and the failu... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: alcohols, e-fuels, gasoline-alcohol blends, renewable fuels, ternary blends
This paper follows on from an earlier publication on high-blend-rate binary gasoline-alcohol mixtures and reports results for some equivalent ternary fuels from several investigation streams. In the present work, new findings are presented for high-load operation in a dedicated boosted multi-cylinder engine test facility, for operation in modified production engines, for knock performance in a single-cylinder test engine, and for exhaust particulate emissions at part load using both the prototype multi-cylinder engine and a separate single-cylinder engine. The wide variety of test engines employed have several differences, including their fuel delivery strategies. This range of engine specifications is considered beneficial with regard to the “drop-in fuel” conjecture, since the results presented here bear out the contention, already established in the literature, that when specified according to the known ternary blending rules, such fuels fundamentally perform identically to their bi... April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: borehole thermal energy storage, renewable energy sources, zero energy building
The paper aims to examine the possibility of adapting an existing school building to the standard of a zero energy building. The school building is a specific case of a building in which the energy consumption is periodic, except for the months with the most sunshine. Therefore, it is necessary to look for a solution that will allow storing the energy obtained, for example, from solar collectors. Based on the analysis of the literature, it was concluded that the use of borehole thermal energy storage might be the right solution to the problem. The article presents the energy balance of the building with and without the use of renewable energy sources and the benefits of using an energy storage system.

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electric vehicle, electricity cost, energy management strategy, photovoltaic, smart home
The efficient use of the incorporation of photovoltaic generation (PV) and an electric vehicle (EV) with the home energy management system (HEMS) can play a significant role in improving grid stability in the residential area and bringing economic benefit to the homeowner. Therefore, this paper presents an energy management strategy in a smart home that integrates an electric vehicle with/without PV generation. The proposed strategy seeks to reduce the household electricity costs and flatten the load curve based on time-of-use pricing, time-varying household power demand, PV generation profile, and EV parameters (arrival and departure times, minimum and maximum limit of the state-of-charge, and initial state-of-charge). The proposed control strategy is divided into two stages: Stage A, which operates in three operating modes according to the unavailability of PV power generation, and Stage B, which operates in five operating modes according to the availability of PV generation. In this... [more]

Keywords: Energy Efficiency, hemp insulation, moisture content, thermal conductivity, thermal insulation
Nowadays, sustainable construction is a key factor for reaching net-zero emissions of carbon dioxide all over the world. This goal is impossible to achieve by merely reducing the energy consumption of end-users. A more holistic approach should be taken, adopting sustainable industrial practices that use environmentally friendly materials on a large scale. This paper presents the analysis of the hydrothermal properties of hemp thermal insulation plates. We carried out extensive measurements and the analysis of the thermal conductivity coefficient, drying-out dynamics, and water absorption. The study was performed with experimental insulation samples based on the fiber obtained from hemp stems, prepared using different adhesive powders. The dimensions of the analyzed samples were 300 × 300 mm. The proposed samples are not yet available in mass production. Hemp does not flower in the Baltic region and was traditionally used for soil regeneration. Thus, using this raw material increases th... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: gated recurrent unit, lithium-ion battery, non-Gaussian noises, robustness, state-of-charge
An accurate state-of-charge (SOC) can not only provide a safe and reliable guarantee for the entirety of equipment but also extend the service life of the battery pack. Given that the chemical reaction inside the lithium-ion battery is a highly nonlinear dynamic system, obtaining an accurate SOC for the battery management system is very challenging. This paper proposed a gated recurrent unit recurrent neural network model with activation function layers (GRU-ATL) to estimate battery SOC. The model used deep learning technology to establish the nonlinear relationship between current, voltage, and temperature measurement signals and battery SOC. Then the online SOC estimation was carried out on different testing sets using the trained model. The experiments in this paper showed that the GRU-ATL network model could realize online SOC estimation under different working conditions without relying on an accurate battery model. Compared with the gated recurrent unit recurrent neural (GRU) net... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: overvoltage protection, switching overvoltages, transformers, vacuum circuit breakers, winding insulation systems
Vacuum circuit breakers are increasingly used as switching apparatus in electric power systems. The vacuum circuit breakers (VCBs) have very good operating properties. VCBs are characterized by specific physical phenomena that affect overvoltage exposure of the insulation systems of other devices. The most important phenomena are the ability to chop the current before the natural zero crossing, the ability to switch off high-frequency currents, and the rapid increase in dielectric strength recovery. One of the devices connected directly to vacuum circuit breakers is the distribution transformer. Overvoltages generated in electrical systems during switching off the transformers are a source of internal overvoltages in the windings. The analysis of the exposure of transformers operating in electrical networks equipped with vacuum circuit breakers is of great importance because of the impact on the insulation systems of switching overvoltages (SO). These types of overvoltages can be chara... [more]

Keywords: data mining, photovoltaic plant maintenance, photovoltaic production, PV soiling, soiling, solar economy
The performance of photovoltaic panels decreases depending on the different factors to which they are subjected daily. One of the phenomena that most affects their energy production is dust deposition. This is particularly acute in desert climates, where the level of solar radiation is extreme. In this work, the effect of dust soiling is examined on the electricity generation of an experimental photovoltaic pilot plant, installed at the Solar Energy Research Center (CIESOL) at the University of Almería. An average reduction of 5% of the power of a photovoltaic plant due to dust contamination has been obtained, this data being used to simulate the economic effect in plants of 9 kWp and 1 and 50 MWp. The economic losses have been calculated, and are capable of being higher than 150,000 €/year in industrial plants of 50 MWp. A cleaning strategy has also been presented, which represents a substantial economic outlay over the years of plant operation.

Keywords: electric vehicles, hydraulic and wind energy generation, marginal costs, optimal power flow, solar, uncertainty and risk analysis, uncertainty cost function
The high penetration of renewable sources of energy in electrical power systems implies an increase in the uncertainty variables of the economic dispatch (ED). Uncertainty costs are a metric to quantify the variability introduced from renewable energy generation, that is to say: wind energy generation (WEG), run-of-the-river hydro generators (RHG), and solar photovoltaic generation (PVG). On other side, there are associated uncertainties to the charge/uncharge of plug-in electric vehicles (PEV). Thus, in this paper, the uncertainty cost functions (UCF) and their marginal expressions as a way of modeling and assessment of stochasticity in power systems with high penetration of smart grids elements is presented. In this work, a mathematical analysis is presented using the first and second derivatives of the UCF, where the marginal uncertainty cost functions (MUCF) and the UCF’s minimums for PVG, WEG, PEV, and RHG are derived. Further, a model validation is presented, considering comparat... [more]

Keywords: battery storage, Hydrogen, remote mining, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, thermal storage, wind power
Mining operations in remote locations rely heavily on diesel fuel for the electricity, haulage and heating demands. Such significant diesel dependency imposes large carbon footprints to these mines. Consequently, mining companies are looking for better energy strategies to lower their carbon footprints. Renewable energies can relieve this over-reliance on fossil fuels. Yet, in spite of their many advantages, renewable systems deployment on a large scale has been very limited, mainly due to the high battery storage system. Using hydrogen for energy storage purposes due to its relatively cheaper technology can facilitate the application of renewable energies in the mining industry. Such cost-prohibitive issues prevent achieving 100% penetration rate of renewables in mining applications. This paper offers a novel integrated renewable−multi-storage (wind turbine/battery/fuel cell/thermal storage) solution with six different configurations to secure 100% off-grid mining power supply as a st... Georgios Gasparis, Wai Hou Lio, Fanzhong Meng
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fatigue load, Surrogate Model, wind farm, wind turbine
Fatigue damage of turbine components is typically computed by running a rain-flow counting algorithm on the load signals of the components. This process is not linear and time consuming, thus, it is non-trivial for an application of wind farm control design and optimisation. To compensate this limitation, this paper will develop and compare different types of surrogate models that can predict the short term damage equivalent loads and electrical power of wind turbines, with respect to various wind conditions and down regulation set-points, in a wind farm. More specifically, Linear Regression, Artificial Neural Network and Gaussian Process Regression are the types of the developed surrogate models in this work. The results showed that Gaussian Process Regression outperforms the other types of surrogate models and can effectively estimate the aforementioned target variables.

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combustion, exhaust emission, glycerol, injection system, internal combustion engine
The paper presents results from an investigation focused on toxicity content in the exhaust gases emitted by an internal combustion compression ignition engine fueled with glycerol-ethanol blends at ratio of 50/50% by volume. The innovative issue of this engine is the application of two high pressure injectors for injecting both glycerol-ethanol blend and diesel pilot fuel at high pressure (over 200 MPa). As known, glycerol is considered a byproduct from biodiesel production technologies, hence its cost is relatively low compared to other renewable alternative fuels which can be applied as fuels to the reciprocating piston engines. It was found that the toxic components UHC, NOx and CO were below the maximum allowed limits. Both NOx and smoke emissions were strongly reduced with increasing glycerol-ethanol fraction in the fuel. Summarizing, a fueling strategy such as that proposed in this paper makes it possible to effectively and environmentally friendly combust crude glycerol in comp... [more]

Keywords: bearing failure, Fourier decomposition method, power function type single-well, wind turbine gearbox bearing, Woods-Saxon stochastic resonance
As the critical parts of wind turbines, rolling bearings are prone to faults due to the extreme operating conditions. To avoid the influence of the faults on wind turbine performance and asset damages, many methods have been developed to monitor the health of bearings by accurately analyzing their vibration signals. Stochastic resonance (SR)-based signal enhancement is one of effective methods to extract the characteristic frequencies of weak fault signals. This paper constructs a new SR model, which is established based on the joint properties of both Power Function Type Single-Well and Woods-Saxon (PWS), and used to make fault frequency easy to detect. However, the collected vibration signals usually contain strong noise interference, which leads to poor effect when using the SR analysis method alone. Therefore, this paper combines the Fourier Decomposition Method (FDM) and SR to improve the detection accuracy of bearing fault signals feature. Here, the FDM is an alternative method o... [more]

Keywords: disturbance observer (DOB), field-oriented control (FOC), numerical zero search, PMSG, wind energy conversion system (WECS), wind turbine
The paper presents simulation research on a variable structure control scheme of a small variable-speed fixed-pitch wind energy conversion system (WECS) with a three-phase permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) in variable wind conditions. The WECS is connected to a power grid through two back-to-back voltage source converters (VSCs) with a DC link. The presented control algorithm is based on feedforward compensation of the wind turbine aerodynamic torque estimated using a linear disturbance observer (DOB). The torque estimate is employed to determine the effective wind speed, required for setting the reference angular speed, using numerical zero search of a nonlinear function. The simulation model, built in the Matlab/Simulink environment using the Simscape Electrical toolbox, includes the field-oriented control of the PMSG via the machine VSC, performed by cascaded angular velocity and current/torque PI controllers, as well as synchronization with the grid and the reactive pow... April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: characteristic curves, hydropower, PAT, prediction model, pump as turbine
The use of Pumps As Turbines (PATs) can be the best solution for exploiting small hydraulic resources. Pump manufacturers do not provide the performances of their machines running in reverse mode, thus several authors developed appropriate prediction models. Some of them can only correlate the pump Best Efficiency Point (BEP) to the PAT corresponding one; other ones are able to obtain the characteristic curves. In this paper, a review of these methodologies is presented with the aim to find the best strategy that allows a designer of a small hydropower plant to select the PAT to be used and to predict its characteristic curves. The study also highlights the possibility of disassembling some models in order to merge the best parts in a more reliable strategy.
