Keywords: BFC-NSFCL, BFCL, DFIG, FRT, nonlinear controller, SDBR
High penetration of Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) into existing power grid can attribute complex issues as they are very sensitive to the grid faults. In addition, Fault Ride Through (FRT) is one of the main requirements of the grid code for integrating Wind Farms (WFs) into the power grid. In this work, to enhance the FRT capability of the DFIG based WFs, a Bridge-Type Flux Coupling Non-Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (BFC-NSFCL) is proposed. The effectiveness of the proposed BFC-NSFCL is evaluated through performance comparison with that of the Bridge-Type Fault Current Limiter (BFCL) and Series Dynamic Braking Resistor (SDBR). Moreover, a dynamic nonlinear controller is also proposed for controlling the operation of the BFC-NSFCL. Extensive simulations are carried out in the MATLAB/SIMULINK environment for both symmetrical and unsymmetrical temporary as well as permanent faults. Based on the simulation results and different numerical analysis, it is found that the prop... [more]

Keywords: DC-DC converter, failure tolerance, microgrid, smart grid, V2A, V2E, V2L, V2X, vehicle-to-aid
The operation of electric vehicles (EV) is currently being segmented into a scenario of smart grids, including vehicle-to-grid (V2G), vehicle-to-home (V2H), vehicle-to-building (V2B), and vehicle-to-load (V2L), among others. Energy-providing services from EVs for medical/health assistance (human, animal, agronomist, environmental, etc.), including emergency services (patrols, fire trucks, etc.), are named/classified in this article as vehicle-to-aid (V2A), since it is expected that they will require special characteristics. For instance, an EV for V2A services must supply regulated voltage by a power electronic converter, even during possible failures, including short-circuits and damages on its components. In this paper, a new configuration of boost converter is proposed, with unlimited serial inputs ( n ), and important properties of fault tolerance, even if the power sources are not isolated; this includes robustness against component failures, variations in the parameters and d... Keywords: harmonic compensation, model based control, multilevel converter
This work presents the design of a control law based on the average model of a shunt active power filter considering an H-bridge neutral point clamped topology and its experimental validation. Therefore, the proposed controller is formed by three control loops, namely current (inner), regulation (outer), and balance control loops. The current loop aims to compensate both the displacement power factor and the harmonic distortion produced by nonlinear loads connected to the point of common coupling. To deal with harmonic current distortion, the current loop involves an adaptive mechanism based on a bank of resonant filters tuned at odd harmonics of the fundamental grid frequency. The regulation and balance loops are aimed to maintain the voltage of the capacitors forming the DC-link at a desired constant level. For this, proportional-integral controllers are designed. The design of all three loops considers the average model of the system. The performance of the proposed multi-loop contr... [more]

Keywords: active power filter, hybrid HVDC converter topology, offshore wind energy, synchronous reference frame
This article describes a hybrid topology of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) for offshore wind farms using a series connection of a voltage source converter (VSC) and six-pulse diode rectifier (6P-DR). In this topology, the offshore side VSC (OF-VSC) acts as a grid-forming converter to maintain the PCC (point of common coupling) voltage of offshore wind farms (WF) and frequency. In addition, the OF-VSC functions as an active power filter to suppress the 5th, 7th, 11th, and 13th order harmonic current components produced by the 6P-DR, making it almost sinusoidal. Due to the 6P-DR being used in the hybrid converter, this new configuration reduces the total cost of the converters and losses, while preserving the power flow to the onshore gird. Compared to the fully-rated converter and hybrid converter based on a 12-pulse diode rectifier, the power loss and cost are reduced, and in addition, the proposed hybrid converter does not require a phase shift transformer nor a high number of dio... Keywords: power system stability, reactive power control, VSC-HVDC
Voltage source converter-based high-voltage direct current (VSC-HVDC) has the advantage of fast and independent controllability on active and reactive power. This paper focuses on effects of commonly proposed reactive power control modes, constant reactive power control and AC voltage margin control. Based on the mathematical model of single machine infinity equivalent system with embedded VSC-HVDC, the influence of VSC-HVDC with different reactive power control strategies on transient stability and dynamic stability of the AC system is studied. Then case studies were conducted with a realistic model of grid. The dynamic responses of AC/DC systems for different VSC-HVDC reactive power control modes were compared in detail. It is shown that compared to constant reactive power control, AC voltage margin control can provide voltage support to enhance the transient angle stability of an AC system. However, the fluctuant reactive power injected into a weak AC system may adversely affect pow... [more]

Keywords: harmonic distortion, metaheuristic search algorithms, power converters, pulse-width modulation
Hand-in-hand with the smart-grid paradigm development, power converters used in high-power applications are facing important challenges related to efficiency and power quality. To overcome these issues, the pre-programmed Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) methods have been extensively applied to reduce the harmonic distortion with very low power switching losses for high-power converters. Among the pre-programmed PWM techniques, Selective Harmonic Elimination (SHE) has been the prevailing solution, but recently, Selective Harmonic Mitigation (SHM) stands as a superior alternative to provide further control of the harmonic spectrum with similar losses. However, the large computational burden required by the SHM method to find a solution confines it as an off-line application, where the switching set valid solutions are pre-computed and stored in a memory. In this paper, for the first time, a real-time implementation of SHM using an off-the-shelf mid-range microcontroller is presented and tes... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: power converters, pulse-width modulation, three-leg converters, zero voltage switching
A three-leg pulse-width modulation converter with auxiliary windings is provided and investigated to realize wide voltage operation and zero voltage switching characteristics on power switches. The presented converter has three converter legs on the input-side and two sets of winding turns on the output-side. Owing to the on/off states of the three converter legs and the two sets of secondary winding turns, the proposed converter can be operated under three different equivalent circuits to have wide input voltage operation from 30V ~ 240V (Vin,max = 8Vin,min). Compared with the multi-stage converters to realize wide input voltage operation, the proposed circuit topology has fewer circuit components and a simple control algorithm. Conventional duty cycle control with phase-shift between each converter leg is adopted to regulate load voltage and also accomplish zero voltage switching on active switches. The presented three-leg converter is tested with a laboratory circuit. Finally, exper... [more]
Power Device Temperature-Balancing Control Method for a Phase-Shift Full-Bridge Converter

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Phase-shift full-bridge (PSFB) converter, Temperature-balance control, Zero-voltage switching
In this paper, a switching method is proposed for power device temperature-balancing in a phase-shift full-bridge (PSFB) converter. PSFB is commonly used for applications that require high efficiency, because a zero-voltage switching (ZVS) operation is possible on the primary-side. In PSFB, the circulation current complicates ZVS under a light-load condition, which generates heat. Meanwhile, the heat generated in PSFB creates a temperature deviation between the lagging leg and the leading leg, which shortens the lifetime of the power device, thereby reducing system reliability and efficiency. To solve this problem, previous studies applied a pulse-width modulation (PWM) switching method for light and medium loads, and a phase-shift switching method for the region where ZVS is possible. Although this method has the advantage of easy control, the maximum temperature of the legs of the PSFB increases with medium loads. In this paper, a temperature-balancing algorithm—a temperature-balance... [more]

Keywords: energy-saving forging process, hydraulic forging press, open die forging
The study deals with the energy-saving process of hot open die elongation forging of heavy steel forgings on an 80 MN industrial hydraulic forging press. Three innovative energy-saving power supply solutions useful for industrial hydraulic forging presses were analyzsed. The energy-saving power supply of hydraulic forging presses consists in reducing electricity consumption by the electric motor driving the pumps, reducing the noise emitted by pumps and reducing leaks in hydraulic piston cylinders. The predicted forging force as a function of heavy steel forging heights for various deformation temperatures and strain rates was determined. A simulation model of the 80 MN hydraulic forging press is presented, which is useful for determining the time-varying parameters during the forging process. An energy-saving control for the hydraulic forging press based on the forging process parameters’ prediction has been developed. Real-time model predictive control (MPC) was developed based on mu... The energy trilemma and UN SDG 7 form the key drivers for the future of all kinds of energy research. In nuclear technology, molten salt reactors are an interesting option, since they can offer a game-changing approach to deliver an attractive, highly sustainable option for a zero-carbon society by providing sufficient breeding for a self-sustained long-term operation based on spent nuclear fuel from existing reactors while being able to be controlled ideally by inherent processes. To achieve these goals, several basic challenges have already been identified and worked on; demonstration of sufficient breeding and development of a demand driven salt clean up system. This study follows up on the opportunity for reactor control based on inherent feedback mechanisms. It is demonstrated that the investigated sodium chloride-uranium chloride-based systems can feasibly deliver a thermal feedback effect, which is strong enough, to compensate for the critically change due to breeding and fissio... Keywords: damping control, high frequency resonance, parallel compensated grid, voltage source converter
High frequency resonance (HFR) is a subsistent problem which affects the operation of the voltage source converter (VSC) connected to the parallel compensated grid. The appearance of HFR introduces a significant high frequency component in the grid voltage, thereby the operation of VSC system will be seriously affected. For enhancing the operation capability of VSC system, an HFR damping method based on the voltage feedforward control is proposed in this paper, which can reshape the VSC system impedance effectively in a wideband range. Besides, different with the existing HFR damping methods, the proposed method introduces a correction factor instead of the series virtual impedance with fixed value, so that the effect of impedance reshaping is irrelevant to the parameters of controlled object. In addition, this paper analyzes the fundamental control performance of VSC system after equipping the proposed method, for verifying that the proposed method will not worsen the fundamental cont... Keywords: common mode current resonance suppression, CPWM, DPWM, virtual negative resistor
The output LC filter of a photovoltaic (PV) string three-level grid-tied inverter that connects the filter capacitor neutral point to dc-link capacitor neutral point can reduce the common-mode (CM) current injected to the grid by letting the CM current circulate within the inverter. However, the internal CM current may resonate because of the existence of the resonant frequency of the internal CM LC circuit. Compared with the traditional continuous pulse-width modulation (CPWM), the resonance can be worse if discontinuous pulse-width modulation (DPWM) is applied, for the zero sequence quantity of DPWM contains more harmonics than that of CPWM. In this paper, a virtual negative resistor based common mode current resonance suppression method for a three-level grid-tied inverter is proposed to overcome the CM current resonance problem in DPWM application. Different positions of the virtual negative resistor in the equivalent CM circuit with different feedback variables are analyzed theore... [more]

Keywords: doubly fed induction generator, impedance modeling, sub-synchronous resonance, virtual synchronous generator
This paper presents the analysis and mitigation of sub-synchronous resonance (SSR) for doubly fed induction generators (DFIG) under virtual synchronous generator (VSG) control, based on impedance methods. VSGs are considered to have grid-supporting ability and good stability in inductance-based weak grids, and are implemented in renewable power generations, including DFIG systems. However, stability analyses of VSGs for DFIG connecting with series capacitor compensation are absent. Therefore, this paper focuses on the analysis and mitigation of SSR for DFIG under VSG control. Impedance modeling of DFIG systems is used to analyze SSR stability. Based on impedance analysis, the influence of VSG control parameters and the configuration of damping factor of reactive power are discussed. Next, a parameter configuration method to mitigate SSR is proposed. Finally, time-domain simulation and fast fourier transform (FFT) results are given to validate the correctness and effectiveness of the im... [more]

Keywords: card-key control system, hotel, occupancy-responsive thermostat, occupant behavior in buildings, temperature setback, thermal comfort
This paper characterizes variations in the indoor temperature and humidity profiles of actual guest rooms equipped with Occupancy-Based Climate Control (OBCC) systems that were used to initiate a temperature setback to 15.6 °C in the winter and to 26.7 °C in the summer in the guest rooms. Empirical knowledge of these conditions can provide useful insights for an improved field demonstration and optimization of OBCC, as well as for a more realistic temperature and occupancy input for building simulations for hotel guest rooms. As a result, one year of one minute temperatures and humidity data was characterized against outdoor climate for three different occupancy modes, which was useful to identify the observed room-to-room variations in heat losses and resultant indoor temperatures during the heating season due to the different dynamic heat balance conditions of the guest rooms. This indicated potential discomfort in the rooms that appeared to have a stronger association between outdoo... [more]

The results show that the tube-embedded slab has significant heat storage and release characteristics under intermittent cooling condition. Its maximum cooling capacity appears about one hour after the stop of cooling. Reducing the cooling duration can reduce the system energy consumption, but increasing the cooling duration can reduce the system peak load. Twenty-four-hour cooling can reduce the peak load by about 70%, 67%, and 41%,... [more]

Keywords: accelerometer, fixed-point algorithm, maximum energy, Monte Carlo method
The solutions presented in this paper can be the basis for mutual comparison of different types of accelerometers produced by competing companies. An application of a procedure based on the Monte Carlo method to determine the maximum energy at the output of accelerometers is discussed here. The fixed-point algorithm controlled by the Monte Carlo method is used to determine this energy. This algorithm can only be used for the time-invariant and linear measurement systems. Hence, the accelerometer nonlinearities are not considered here. The mathematical models of the accelerometer and the special filter, represented by the relevant transfer functions, are the basis for the above procedure. Testing results of the voltage-mode accelerometer of type DJB A/1800/V are presented here as an example of an implementation of the solutions proposed. Calculation of the energy was executed in Mathcad 14 program with the built-in Programming Toolbar. The value of the maximum output energy determined f... [more]

Keywords: DC-AC power conversion, harmonic distortion, inverters, low cost
A new circuit structure and control method for a high power interleaved dual-buck inverter are proposed. The proposed inverter consists of six switches, four diodes and two inductors, uses a dual-buck structure to eliminate zero-cross distortion, and operates in an interleaved mode to reduce the current stress of switch. To reduce the total harmonic distortion at low output power, the inverter is controlled using discontinuous-current-mode control combined with continuous-current-mode control. The experimental inverter had a power-conversion efficiency of 98.5% at output power = 1300 W and 98.3% at output power = 2 kW, when the inverter was operated at an input voltage of 400 VDC, output voltage of 220 VAC/60 Hz, and switching frequency of 20 kHz. The total harmonic distortion was < 0.66%, which demonstrates that the inverter is suitable for high-power dc-ac power conversion.

In recent years, different off-the-shelf solutions for the rapid control prototyping of power electronics converters have been commercialised. The main benefits of those systems are based on a fast and easy-to-use environment due to high-level programming. However, most of those systems are very expensive and are closed software and hardware solutions. In this context, this paper presents the design and implementation of a control platform targeting at the segment in between expensive off-the-shelf control platforms and low-cost controllers. The control platform is based on the Launchpad TMS320F28379D from Texas Instruments, and it is equipped with an expansion board that provide analogue-to-digital measurements, switching signals and hardware protections. The performance of the control platform is experimentally tested on a 20 kVA power converter.

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: axial in-situ stress, constitutive model, deep tunnel, dilatancy, strain softening
In many previous tunnel analyses, the axial in-situ stress was ignored. In this work, its effect on the deformation and failure of the surrounding rock of a deep tunnel was revealed, considering the objective strain softening and dilatancy behavior of the surrounding rock. Analysis based on the incremental plastic flow theory was conducted, and C++ was used to write a constitutive model for numerical simulation to verify and further analyze this effect. Then, the results were validated by the field monitoring data of a coal mine gateway. Results show that the effect of the axial in-situ stress σa0 is more significant when strain softening is considered, compared with the results of a perfectly elastoplastic model. When the axial stress σa is σ1 or σ3 at the initial yield, an increase or decrease in σa0 intensifies the deformation and failure of the surrounding rock. When σa is σ2 at the initial yield, 3D plastic flow partly controlled by σa may occur, and an increase in σa0 intensifies... [more]

This paper presents a novel maximum power point tracking method for photovoltaic inverters with a single phase connection to the onboard 400Hz vehicle or aircraft grid, supplying drives operating in a critical mode. By taking into account that the power fluctuations cause voltage ripples at the termini of photovoltaic panels connected to the DC-link capacitor, this paper proposes a conductance base maximum power point tracking method. The impact of varying voltage has been reduced to ensure the constant reference current for the grid current calculation problem, which has been reported in previous studies. Accordingly, a conductance base tracking method, grid current control, is proposed and implemented to ensure the expected output current with respect to varying power. As described in this paper, the exemplified solar converter prototype can implement constant reference photovoltaic current control with a maximum power point achievement under continuous voltage rippling. Keywords: Daqingzijing Oilfield, delta, hydrocarbon accumulation, isolated sand bodies, sand-control mechanism
After over 20 years of development in Daqingzijiang Oilfield, isolated sand bodies under the delta front and pro-delta in the Qingshankou Formation(qn)have become important oil and gas reservoir bodies. However, the cause for large amounts of isolated bar sand bodies in the lake-basin delta sediment system has not been reported in China. This article, through core observation, reveals plenty of evidence that there storm waves once existed. Combined with paleogeography and hydrodynamic force analysis, it describes the transformation effect of waves on delta sand bodies and on the formation mechanism of bar sand bodies. Based on a study on paleogeomorphology and the statistics of sand body distribution, we consider ‘Storm waves conveying sand’ and ‘landform controlling sand’ as the cause and distribution model of the delta’s isolated bar sand body formation. We also think that the superposition of multiple bar sand bodies is the direct cause of the strong anisotropy in reservoirs and the... [more]
