Autonomous Shuttle Bus for Public Transportation: A Review
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: autonomous driving, autonomous shuttle bus, autonomous vehicle, game-changer, public transportation
The rapid evolution of autonomous technology in the field of automotive and information technology (IT) has made it possible to implement autonomous vehicles (AVs) for public passenger transport. Although the shuttle bus transport capacities currently in use are low (maximum 15 people), the use of these transport units in large urban agglomerations is beneficial for society. The current paper is written to review the current AV implementation with respect to shuttle buses with its direct implications in their scientific evolution, with direct links to the legal and social aspects of public transportation all over the world. A critical aspect that is presented in the paper is the legal framework of autonomous driving, which is extremely uneven around the globe, with the direct impact of autonomous shuttle bus exploitation. As the legislation on AVs presents some shortcomings in the approval, registration, and public road implementation of these vehicles, many of the world’s major cities... [more]

Replacement Reserve for the Italian Power System and Electricity Market
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: electricity market, frequency control, power system, regulation, reserve, transmission grid
Over the last years, power systems around the globe experienced deep changes in their operation, mainly induced by the widespread of Intermittent Renewable Energy Sources (IRES). These changes involved a review of market and operational rules, in the direction of a stronger integration. At European level, this integration is in progress, driven by the new European guidelines and network codes, which deal with multiple issues, from market design to operational security. In this framework, the project TERRE (Trans European Replacement Reserve Exchange) is aimed at the realization of a European central platform, called LIBRA, for the exchange of balancing resources and, in particular, for the activation of the procured Replacement Reserve (RR) resources. The Italian Transmission System Operator (TSO), TERNA, is a participant of the project and it is testing new methodologies for the sizing of RR and its required activation throughout the TERRE process. The aim of the new methodologies is... [more]

Assessment of Colorimetric Parameters for HPS Lamp with Electromagnetic Control Gear and Electronic Ballast
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: colorimetric parameters, electromagnetic control gear, electronic ballast, HPS lamp, luminous efficacy
Road lighting is an important element of road infrastructure influencing on the road safety. It helps road users to identify potential hazards on the road and reduces the risk of a road accident. Improving the energy efficacy of road lighting installations requires using new technologies. Currently, high-pressure sodium (HPS) lamps are still most commonly used in road lighting. Many of the luminaires with HPS lamps are still in good technical condition and there is no economic justification for replacing them (except improving energy efficacy). One of the methods of improving their energy efficacy is to replace the electromagnetic control gear (ECG) with an electronic ballast (EB). This replacement may affect the colorimetric parameters of the HPS lamps. Two methods to the estimation change of colorimetric parameters after the replacement of ECG to EB were used. The first is CIE TN 001:2014 and the second is ANSI/IES TM-30-15. The article also presents the advantages and disadvantages... [more]

Distributed FACTS for Power System Transient Stability Control
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: corrective control actions, dynamic security assessment, dynamic series compensation, FACTS, power system dynamic security, transient stability
The high penetration of renewable energy sources, combined with a limited possibility to expand the transmission infrastructure, stretches the system stability in the case of faults. For this reason, operators are calling for additional control flexibility in the grid. In this paper, we propose the deployment of switchable reactors and capacitors distributed on the grid as a control resource for securing operations during severe contingencies and avoiding potential blackouts. According to the operating principles, the line reactance varies by switching on or off a certain number of distributed series reactors and capacitors and, therefore, the stabilizing control rule is based on a stepwise time-discrete control action. A control strategy, based on dynamic optimization, is proposed and tested on a realistic-sized transmission system.

Calculating the Interface Flow Limits for the Expanded Use of High-Voltage Direct Current in Power Systems
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: contingency list, DC tap control, FV analysis, FV margin, HVDC, interface lines, interface power flow, power system operation
Although loads are increasingly becoming concentrated in metropolitan areas, power generation has decreased in metropolitan areas and increased in nonmetropolitan areas; hence, power transmission must occur through interface lines. To achieve this, additional transmission lines must be secured because the existing interface lines have reached their large-scale power transmission limits. The Korea Electric Power Corporation has installed many high-voltage direct current lines, thereby impacting the determination of interface power flow limits. These serve as the basis for system operations. However, knowledge of operating high-voltage direct current lines as a simple transmission line in a single power system is lacking. The effects of high-voltage direct current and its related parameters for interface flow limit analysis remain unclear. Furthermore, whether high-voltage direct current should be included in the selection of the interface lines that serve as the basis for interface flow... [more]

Fault Detection Algorithm for Wind Turbines’ Pitch Actuator Systems
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Fault Detection, interval observer, pitch actuator, wind turbines
A fault detection innovation to wind turbines’ pitch actuators is an important subject to guarantee the efficiency wind energy conversion and long lifetime operation of these rotatory machines. Therefore, a recent and effective fault detection algorithm is conceived to detect faults on wind turbine pitch actuators. This approach is based on the interval observer framework theory that has proved to be an efficient tool to measure dynamic uncertainties in dynamical systems. It is evident that almost any fault in any actuator may affect its historical-time behavior. Hence, and properly conceptualized, a fault detection system can be successfully designed based on interval observer dynamics. This is precisely our main contribution. Additionally, we realize a numerical analysis to evaluate the performance of our approach by using a dynamic model of a pitch actuator device with faults. The numerical experiments support our main contribution.

Control of Heat Pumps with CO2 Emission Intensity Forecasts
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: buildings, CO2-emissions, dynamic systems, electrical grid power, heat pumps, model predictive control (MPC)
An optimized heat pump control for building heating was developed for minimizing CO 2 emissions from related electrical power generation. The control is using weather and CO 2 emission forecasts as inputs to a Model Predictive Control (MPC)—a multivariate control algorithm using a dynamic process model, constraints and a cost function to be minimized. In a simulation study, the control was applied using weather and power grid conditions during a full-year period in 2017−2018 for the power bidding zone DK2 (East, Denmark). Two scenarios were studied; one with a family house and one with an office building. The buildings were dimensioned based on standards and building codes/regulations. The main results are measured as the CO 2 emission savings relative to a classical thermostatic control. Note that this only measures the gain achieved using the MPC control, that is, the energy flexibility, not the absolute savings. The results show that around 16% of savings cou... [more]

Design and Experiment of a Power Sharing Control Circuit for Parallel Fuel Cell Modules
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: DC/DC converter, Energy Conversion, Fuel Cells, parallel architectures, power distribution
In this paper, a novel control circuit that can connect fuel cell (FC) modules in parallel is proposed, which is particularly useful when the employed FCs have different electrical characteristics. Conventional methods (e.g., DC/DC converters) are not applicable in such situations because they cannot regulate the power output of each source in a parallel-connected topology. Consequently, the uniformity requirement of FCs increases and becomes costly. In contrast to existing methods, the proposed method adopts a novel power-feedback method to control the power output of each FC module under both rated conditions and load changes, which in turn determines the operating point of each FC module. Therefore, the uniformity requirement can be relaxed. For proof of concept, the experiments employed two FC-like sources with different I−V characteristics. The experimental results indicated that the power assignment under the rated condition had a relative error of < 6.62%. The distribution ra... [more]

Coordinated Control of Active and Reactive Power Compensation for Voltage Regulation with Enhanced Disturbance Rejection Using Repetitive Vector-Control
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: effective voltage regulation, generalized delayed signal cancellation, harmonic distortion, power quality, repetitive controller
Voltage profile is one of many aspects that affect power quality in low-voltage distribution feeders. Weak grids have a typically high line impedance which results in remarkable voltage drops. Distribution grids generally have a high R/X ratio, which makes voltage regulation with reactive power compensation less effective than in high-voltage grids. Moreover, these networks are more susceptible to unbalance and harmonic voltage disturbances. This paper proposes an enhanced coordinated control of active and reactive power injected in a distribution grid for voltage regulation. Voltage drop mitigation was evaluated with power injection based on local features, such loads and disturbances of each connection. In order to ensure disturbances rejection like harmonic components in the grid voltages, a repetitive vector-control scheme was used. The injection of coordinated active and reactive power with the proposed control algorithm was verified through simulations and experiments, demonstrat... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: ancillary services, coordinated frequency control, frequency response, grid code, master–slave, multi-terminal HVDC grids, outer loop, synchronous characteristics
This paper proposes a methodology for tuning a supervisory and frequency-response outer loop control system of a multi-terminal direct current (MTDC) grid designed to transmit offshore wind energy to an onshore AC grid, and to provide frequency support during over-frequency events. The control structure is based on a master−slave scheme and ensures the achievement of frequency response, with specific implementation of the UK national grid code limited-frequency sensitive (LFSM) and frequency-sensitive (FSM) modes. The onshore AC grid is modelled with an equivalent frequency-response model to simulate the onshore AC grid dynamics under frequency deviations. The main innovation of this paper is the development of a methodology for tuning simultaneously two hierarchical levels of a MTDC coordinated control structure, i.e., the MTDC supervisor, given by the active power set point for slave terminal, and the slope of frequency-response functions at onshore terminals. Based on these two hier... [more]

Hydrogen Fuel Cell and Ultracapacitor Based Electric Power System Sliding Mode Control: Electric Vehicle Application
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: electric vehicle, hydrogen fuel cell, nonlinear observer and control
Control of a perturbed electric power system comprised of a hydrogen fuel cell (HFC), boost and boost/buck DC−DC power converters, and the ultra-capacitor (UC) is considered within an electric vehicle application. A relative degree approach was applied to control the servomotor speed, which is the main controllable load of the electric car. This control is achieved in the presence of the torque disturbances via directly controlling the armature voltage. The direct voltage control was accomplished by controlling the HFC voltage and the UC current in the presence of the model uncertainties. Controlling the HFC and UC current based on the power balance approach eliminated the non-minimum phase property of the DC−DC boost converter. Conventional first order sliding mode controllers (1-SMC) were employed to control the output voltage of the DC−DC boost power converter and the load current of the UC. The current in HFC and the servomotor speed were controlled by the adaptive-gain second orde... [more]

Multiagent Based Distributed Control with Time-Oriented SoC Balancing Method for DC Microgrid
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: DC microgrid, distributed control, multiagent system, power sharing, secondary control, SoC balance
Based on the droop control, voltage regulation at the secondary control is required to eliminate the deviation of the average voltage across the microgrid. Meanwhile, to prevent any of energy storage (ESs) from over-charging or over-discharging, State-of-Charge (SoC) balancing should be added in the secondary control. This paper proposes a distributed secondary control in the DC microgrid based on the multiagent system (MAS). This controller consists of voltage regulation and time-oriented SoC balancing. In voltage regulation, a PI controller adjusts the droop parameters according to the discrepancy between the average voltage and the reference voltage. In SoC balancing, controller operates in charging mode or discharging mode according to changes of the global average SoC. Being different from the conventional method, the time-oriented SoC balancing method is designed to balance charge/discharge time rather than to balance SoC directly. Thus, SoCs reach a consensus only at the last mo... [more]

Differential Flatness Based-Control Strategy of a Two-Port Bidirectional Supercapacitor Converter for Hydrogen Mobility Applications
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: differential flatness control, electric vehicles, energy management strategy, fuel cell, stability, supercapacitors, transportation systems
This article is focused on an original control approach applied to a transportation system that includes a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) as the main energy source and supercapacitors (SC) as the energy storage backup. To interface the SC with the DC bus of the embedded network, a two-port bidirectional DC-DC converter was used. To control the system and ensure its stability, a reduced-order mathematical model of the network was developed through a nonlinear control approach employing a differential flatness algorithm, which is an attractive and efficient solution to make the system stable by overcoming the dynamic issues generally met in the power electronics networks of transportation systems. The design and tuning of the system control were not linked with the equilibrium point at which the interactions between the PEMFC main source, the SC energy storage device, and the loads are taken into consideration by the proposed control law. Besides this, high dynamics in th... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: co-simulation, ESP, Fuzzy-PID, HDC, real vehicle tests
We explored a vehicle hill descent control (HDC) system based on an electronic stability program (ESP) and applied this system to brake cars. The experimental results reveal that our system can effectively reduce the workload of a driver during a downhill journey. In the first phase of our work, the control strategy of the HDC system based on fuzzy-PID (Proportion Integral Differential) was built by MATLAB/Simulink. Then, the co-simulation based on MATLAB/Simulink, CarSim and AMESim was carried out. Finally, a real vehicle test was conducted to further verify the feasibility of the strategy. A series of simulation experiments and real vehicle tests show that the HDC system can assist the driver to control the vehicle while driving downhill at low speed, thus effectively improving the safety of the vehicle and reducing the workload of driver.

A Decision Support Tool for Implementing District Heating in Existing Cities, Focusing on Using a Geothermal Source
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: decision support tool, district heating, geothermal source, GIS, local energy community, urban energy analysis
In the context of climate change mitigation strategies in urban environments and reducing reliance on carbon-based energy sources, the Netherlands is gradually taking steps towards modification of its thermal energy system. Geothermal energy, widely used in agriculture, has recently emerged as a local, clean, and sustainable energy source able to fulfil the residential demand for space heating and has received growing attention in district energy planning. However, failed attempts in the past and the lack of experience with direct application of this technology in district heating systems has increased uncertainty with respect to the technical, spatial, and socioeconomic barriers to be overcome between supply and demand. This calls for the application of decision support tools in order to remove these barriers and facilitate more appropriate decision making towards the implementation of smart thermal energy grids in local energy communities. Singularly Perturbed Modeling and LQR Controller Design for a Fuel Cell System
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: LQR optimal control, Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells, singularly perturbed modeling
Modeling and control of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) has become a very popular research topic lately due to the increasing use of renewable energy. Despite this fact, most of the work in the current literature only studies standard dynamical models without taking into consideration possible parasitics such as small gas flow perturbations that could be available in the system. This paper addresses this issue by elaborating on time-scale modeling of an augmented eighteenth-order PEMFC-reformer system via singular perturbation theory. The latter captures time scales that arise in the model due to the presence of small perturbations. Specifically, a novel and efficient algorithm that helps identify the presence of different time-scales is developed. In addition, the method converts an implicit singularly perturbed model into an explicit equivalent where the time-scales are evident. Using this algorithm, a complete singularly perturbed dynamic model of the augmented eighteent... [more]

Energy Use and Labor Productivity in Ethiopia: The Case of the Manufacturing Industry
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Energy, Ethiopia, labor productivity, manufacturing
This study investigates the effect of energy use on labor productivity in the Ethiopian manufacturing industry. It uses panel data for the manufacturing industry groups to estimate the coefficients using the dynamic panel estimator. The study’s results confirm that energy use increases manufacturing labor productivity. The coefficients for the control variables are in keeping with theoretical predictions. Capital positively augments productivity in the industries. Based on our results, technology induces manufacturing’s labor productivity. Likewise, more labor employment induces labor productivity due to the dominance of labor-intensive manufacturing industries in Ethiopia. Alternative model specifications provide evidence of a robust link between energy and labor productivity in the Ethiopian manufacturing industry. Our results imply that there needs to be more focus on the efficient use of energy, labor, capital, and technology to increase the manufacturing industry’s labor productiv... [more]

A Passive Control Method of Hub Corner Stall in a 1.5-Stage Axial Compressor under Low-Speed Conditions
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: compressor margin, hub corner stall, off-design speed, partial clearance
Since the use of the compressor of a ship gas turbine is unavoidable at a low-speed operation, the flow field characteristics and stall mechanism at off-design speeds are important aspects for compressor designers. In this study, the first 1.5 stages of an eight-stage compressor are numerically simulated. The mechanism of compressor rotor instability at lower speeds is identified. The characteristic lines of compressors with various partial clearance are calculated at low speed (0.6 N). The flow field of the same outlet pressure (near stall point of the original compressor without clearance) is compared and analyzed. The results show that, at the near stall point, the suction surface separation and backflow occur in the main flow of the rotor top. It develops along the blade span and finally blocks the flow passage of the rotor, which results in the compressor stall. At the same time, the stall also occurs at the corner of the stator hub. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: flywheel energy storage system, hybrid power unit, partitioned hydrogen fuel cell, urban transit bus
The development of more sustainable and zero-emissions collective transport solutions could play a very important measure in the near future within smart city policies. This paper tries to give a contribution to this aim, proposing a novel approach to fuel cell vehicle design and operation. Traditional difficulties experienced in fuel cell transient operation are, in fact, normally solved in conventional vehicle prototypes, through the hybridization of the propulsion system and with the complete fulfillment of transients in road energy demand through a high-capacity onboard energy storage device. This makes it normally necessary to use Li-ion battery solutions, accepting their restrictions in terms of weight, costs, energy losses, limited lifetime, and environmental constraints. The proposed solution, instead, introduces a partitioning of the hydrogen fuel cell (FC) and novel optimal power control strategy, with the aim of limiting the capacity of the energy storage, still avoiding FC... Performance Improvement of a Hydraulic Active/Passive Heave Compensation Winch Using Semi Secondary Motor Control: Experimental and Numerical Verification
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active heave compensation, hydrostatic transmission, winch
In this paper, a newly developed controller for active heave compensated offshore cranes is compared with state-of-the-art control methods. The comparison is divided into a numerical part on stability margins as well as operational windows and an experimental validation of the expected performance improvement based on a full-scale testing on site with a crane rated to 250 metric tons. Such a crane represents the typical target for the new control method using a combination of active and passive hydraulic actuation on the main winch. The active hydraulic actuation is a hydrostatic transmission with variable-displacement pumps and variable-displacement motors. The new controller employs feedforward control of the motors’ displacement so that the window of operation is increased and, simultaneously, oscillations in the system are markedly reduced.
