Active Disturbance Rejection Control of Differential Drive Assist Steering for Electric Vehicles
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active disturbance rejection control, independent-wheel drive, nonlinear system, smooth road feeling, steering assistance
The differential drive assist steering (DDAS) system makes full use of the advantages of independent control of wheel torque of electric vehicle driven by front in-wheel motors to achieve steering assistance and reduce the steering effort of the driver, as the electric power steering (EPS) system does. However, as an indirect steering assist technology that applies steering system assistance via differential drive, its linear control algorithm, like existing proportion integration differentiation (PID) controllers, cannot take the nonlinear characteristics of the tires’ dynamics into account which results in poor performance in road feeling and tracking accuracy. This paper introduces an active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) method into the control issue of the DDAS. First, the third-order ADRC controller of the DDAS is designed, and the simulated annealing algorithm is used to optimize the parameters of ADRC controller offline considering that the parameters of ADRC controller a... A Model Predictive Control Strategy for Distribution Grids: Voltage and Frequency Regulation for Islanded Mode Operation
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: interconnected microgrids, islanded mode, Model Predictive Control, optimal control, power systems, voltage and frequency regulation
In the last few years, one of the most important challenges of power technologies has been the integration of traditional energy production systems and distributed energy resources. Large-scale photovoltaic systems and wind farms may decrease the quality of the electrical grid service, mainly due to voltage and frequency peaks and fluctuations. Besides, new functionalities, such as the operation in islanded mode of some portions of the medium-voltage grid, are more and more required. In this respect, a model predictive control for voltage and frequency regulation in interconnected local distribution systems is presented. In the proposed model, each local system represents a collection of intelligent buildings and microgrids with a large capacity in active and reactive power regulation. The related model formalization includes a linear approximation of the power flow equations, based on stochastic variables related to the electrical load and to the production from renewable sources. Ground Fault Detection Using Hybrid Method in IT System LVDC Microgrid
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: DER, detailed coefficient, ESS, ground fault detection, hybrid method, IT system, LVDC microgrid, PSCAD
Low voltage direct current (LVDC) microgrid systems have many advantages over low voltage alternating current (LVAC) systems. Furthermore, LVDC microgrids are growing in use because they are easy to link to distributed energy resources (DER) and energy storage systems (ESS), etc. Currently, IT system LVDC microgrids are widely used in direct current (DC) railways, hospitals, photovoltaic (PV) systems, and so on. When a ground fault occurs in an IT system LVDC microgrid, the ground fault may not be detected because the fault current is very small and there is no current path. In this paper, ground fault detection is proposed using a hybrid method that comprises pulsation signal generator injection and detailed coefficients of discrete wavelet transform (DWT). The LVDC microgrid was modeled and simulated using power systems computer-aided design (PSCAD). In addition, the proposed hybrid method was implemented using MATLAB’s wave menu, a script m-file, and the PSCAD library. The proper th... [more]

Improved Direct Model Predictive Control for Grid-Connected Power Converters
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: advanced control, deadbeat, power converter, predictive control, robust control
This paper proposes a computationally efficient and robust direct model predictive control (DMPC) technique with enhanced steady-state performance for power converters tied to the electric utility. The discrete space vector modulation (DSVM) method is considered in the design of the suggested DMPC, where virtual voltage vectors (VVs) besides the real ones are utilized for improving the steady-state response of the proposed controller. Furthermore, for averting the high computational burden and making the proposed control technique simple, a deadbeat (DB) function is employed for calculating the reference VV based on the required reference current. Subsequently, a discrete-time integral term is combined with this DB function to enhance the robustness of the suggested DMPC technique against variations of the model parameters. Finally, the best virtual or real VV is chosen by a certain quality function, which will be applied to the power converter in the next sample. The suggested techniq... [more]

A Comparative Study of Optimal Energy Management Strategies for Energy Storage with Stochastic Loads
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: energy storage system, load forecasting, model predictive controller, stochastic loads
This paper aims to present the significance of predicting stochastic loads to improve the performance of a low voltage (LV) network with an energy storage system (ESS) by employing several optimal energy controllers. Considering the highly stochastic behaviour that rubber tyre gantry (RTG) cranes demand, this study develops and compares optimal energy controllers based on a model predictive controller (MPC) with a rolling point forecast model and a stochastic model predictive controller (SMPC) based on a stochastic prediction demand model as potentially suitable approaches to minimise the impact of the demand uncertainty. The proposed MPC and SMPC control models are compared to an optimal energy controller with perfect and fixed load forecast profiles and a standard set-point controller. The results show that the optimal controllers, which utilise a load forecast, improve peak reduction and cost savings of the storage device compared to the traditional control algorithm. Development and Implementation of Fault-Correction Algorithms in Fault Detection and Diagnostics Tools
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: building operation, Energy Efficiency, fault correction, fault detection and diagnostics, field testing
A fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) tool is a type of energy management and information system that continuously identifies the presence of faults and efficiency improvement opportunities through a one-way interface to the building automation system and the application of automated analytics. Building operators on the leading edge of technology adoption use FDD tools to enable median whole-building portfolio savings of 8%. Although FDD tools can inform operators of operational faults, currently an action is always required to correct the faults to generate energy savings. A subset of faults, however, such as biased sensors, can be addressed automatically, eliminating the need for staff intervention. Automating this fault “correction” can significantly increase the savings generated by FDD tools and reduce the reliance on human intervention. Doing so is expected to advance the usability and technical and economic performance of FDD technologies. This paper presents the development o... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adaptive speed estimator, discrete implementation, induction motor drive, numerical integration methods, regenerating mode, sensorless control, stability
In the literature on sensorless control of induction motors, many algorithms have been presented for rotor flux and speed estimation. However, all these algorithms have been developed in the continuous−time domain. The digital realization of the control systems, requires the implementation of those estimation methods in a discrete−time domain. The main goal of this article is comparison of the impact of different numerical integration methods, used in analogue emulation under the digital implementation of the control systems, to the operation of classical Model Reference Adaptive System; CC-based on two current models (MRASCC) speed estimator and its three modified versions developed for the extension of the estimator stability region. In this paper the generalized mathematical model of MRASCC estimator is proposed, which takes into account all known methods for the extension of the stability region of classical speed estimator of this type. Overview on Grid-Forming Inverter Control Methods
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: droop control, electrical inertia, grid-forming inverter, inverter-dominated power system, virtual synchronous machine, voltage-controlled inverter, voltage-forming inverter
In this paper, different control approaches for grid-forming inverters are discussed and compared with the grid-forming properties of synchronous machines. Grid-forming inverters are able to operate AC grids with or without rotating machines. In the past, they have been successfully deployed in inverter dominated island grids or in uninterruptable power supply (UPS) systems. It is expected that with increasing shares of inverter-based electrical power generation, grid-forming inverters will also become relevant for interconnected power systems. In contrast to conventional current-controlled inverters, grid-forming inverters do not immediately follow the grid voltage. They form voltage phasors that have an inertial behavior. In consequence, they can inherently deliver momentary reserve and increase power grid resilience.

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: distributed energy generation, droop control, fault ride through, islanding, microgrid, phase intervention, voltage fed control
In many countries the percentage of power electronic interfaced power sources (PEIPS), especially renewable energies like wind power and photovoltaic (PV), has increased significantly during the last decade.Retaining system stability with a declining number of conventional synchronous generators is a new challenge that starts to be addressed by Grid Operators. The existing control schemes used in distributed energy generation inverters generally do not provide significant services to grid stability. This paper focuses on a control scheme that is in many ways similar to the control of conventional power plants, but avoids a higher rating of the inverters which is often required by control approaches emulating the response of a synchronous generator. The control parameters of the proposed scheme are derived analytically and their main dependencies from major system parameters are discussed. March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fuzzy controller, Genetic Algorithm, home energy management system, photovoltaic panel, real-time price
A home energy management system (HEMS) was designed in this paper for a smart home that uses integrated energy resources such as power from the grid, solar power generated from photovoltaic (PV) panels, and power from an energy storage system (ESS). A fuzzy controller is proposed for the HEMS to optimally manage the integrated power of the smart home. The fuzzy controller is designed to control the power rectifier for regulating the AC power in response to the variations in the residential electric load, solar power from PV panels, power of the ESS, and the real-time electricity prices. A self-learning scheme is designed for the proposed fuzzy controller to adapt with short-term and seasonal climatic changes and residential load variations. A parsimonious parameterization scheme for both the antecedent and consequent parts of the fuzzy rule base is utilized so that the self-learning scheme of the fuzzy controller is computationally efficient.

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: computational intelligence, data mining, decentral smart grid control (DSGC), fuzzy rule-based classifiers, interpretable and accurate DSGC-stability prediction, multi-objective evolutionary optimization
The main objective and contribution of this paper was/is the application of our knowledge-based data-mining approach (a fuzzy rule-based classification system) characterized by a genetically optimized interpretability-accuracy trade-off (by means of multi-objective evolutionary optimization algorithms) for transparent and accurate prediction of decentral smart grid control (DSGC) stability. In particular, we aim at uncovering the hierarchy of influence of particular input attributes upon the DSGC stability. Moreover, we also analyze the effect of possible "overlapping" of some input attributes over the other ones from the DSGC-stability perspective. The recently published and available at the UCI Database Repository Electrical Grid Stability Simulated Data Set and its input-aggregate-based concise version were used in our experiments. Keywords: daylighting, dynamic daylight metrics, energy conservation, Energy Efficiency, lighting control, windows
This paper deals with the impact of the use of daylight on the overall energy demand for heating, cooling, and lighting in educational buildings. The energy performance of buildings is currently of the utmost importance as current European regulations, starting from 31st December 2020 impose that all new buildings must meet nearly zero-energy building requirements. This paper presents a study of the illuminance distribution in an educational room obtained from measurements and simulation results using two different models. One of the models, integrated with a thermal simulation software, was used to estimate the impact of daylight on the energy demand. The analysis included the use of various window types, lighting control system, reference point location, and daylight calculation model for a sample room in an educational building. Results of the analysis indicate that, due to the high share of lighting demand (reaching up to 78% of the primary energy balance), there is a need to take... [more]

Methodology for Asynchronous Motor Impedance Measurement by Using Higher Order Harmonics
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: higher order harmonics, idling, inductance, magnetic biasing, magnetic flux, motor resistance, suspended rotor, winding
The control methods of asynchronous motors have changed during past decades. In the past, asynchronous motors were connected to grid directly. Later, thyristors as switching element-based frequency converters for asynchronous motors have appeared. Today, asynchronous motors are controlled with variable speed drives that are frequency converters consisting of IGBT power modules as switching elements that form the output voltage for asynchronous motors. Because of IGBT’s high switching speed of around few kilohertz, higher order harmonics appear in the output voltage. Their influence was not analyzed in the past as the methodology of asynchronous motor winding resistance measurement was under development. In this article, a new methodology of motor resistance measurement for mass production is introduced. The resistance—compared to higher order harmonics values between the windings of benchmark and tested motors—gives an ability to faster and more accurately determine a motor’s character... [more]

Current Harmonics Controller for Reduction of Acoustic Noise, Vibrations and Torque Ripple Caused by Cogging Torque in PM Motors under FOC Operation
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: acoustic noise, cogging torque, cogging torque reduction, current harmonics controller, PM motor, torque ripple, vibrations
This article presents an effective algorithm to reduce acoustic noise, vibrations and torque ripple caused by cogging torque in three-phase Permanent Magnet (PM) motors under Field Oriented Control (FOC) operation. Cogging torque profile is suitably included into q-axis current reference, which must be then precisely tracked in order to mitigate acoustic noise, vibrations, torque ripple and speed ripple caused by cogging torque. Conventional FOC structure has been extended by a Current Harmonics Controller (CHC) to achieve precise control of dq current harmonics for all operation speeds, which is crucial to reduce impact of cogging torque and increase performance of electric drive with PM motor. Effectiveness of proposed control technique is experimentally verified by vibrations and acoustic noise measurements.

This research focuses on the use of natural lighting integrated into buildings. Cylindrical glass was fitted into the top of our test model, which was 1 m × 1 m × 1 m, which enhanced the light inside it. The glass fitted comprised a single layer (G), two layers (2G), or two layers of glass filled with distilled water (2GW). Each combination of glass increased the number of glass cylinders from two to six. The nine formats were tested indoors using a light intensity of 1000 W/m2 and the temperature was controlled at 25 °C. The lowest temperature averaged 34.4 °C, which was recorded using only two glass cylinders that had two layers of glass filled with distilled water. The average internal illumination was 549 lux, which agreed with the CIE standard. Then, the two layers of glass filled with water were examined under natural conditions. It was found that the highest average inside temperature was 40.4 °C at 1:30 p.m. The average illuminant values for three days were in the range of 300−... [more]

Dynamic Voltage Support of Converters during Grid Faults in Accordance with National Grid Code Requirements
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: converter, dynamic voltage support, short-circuit
To ensure system stability, national grid codes often require converter-based generators to provide fault-ride-through (FRT) capabilities and dynamic voltage support, according to which they should stay connected and support the voltage during fault situations. The requirements for dynamic voltage support include the injection of reactive current in the positive- as well as negative-sequence system, directly proportional to the change of the corresponding voltage between fault and pre-fault. Since this requirement may lead to a reference current surpassing the maximum current capability, the converter control has to contain a proper current limitation. This paper presents an algorithm for such a current limitation and a simulation model of a converter and its control, which applies this algorithm. Based on voltage measurements, which were measured during forced short-circuits in the real grid, the simulation model is used to simulate the behavior of a converter in reaction to these vol... This paper provides a simple low-level unidirectional global communication method for DC microgrids, and requires no hardware modifications to the microgrid and interfacing power electronic converters. The underlying premise to this communication method is injecting low-frequency low-voltage sinusoidal components into the DC microgrid power lines. This method deviates from the common bit-level communication scheme by relating parameters and commands with certain frequency components. Communication structures are included as a basis for communication protocols, and a detection method is proposed for detecting the injected frequencies. Comparison of an Off-Line Optimized Firing Angle Modulation and Torque Sharing Functions for Switched Reluctance Motor Control
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: efficiency, finite element method, firing angle modulation, Optimization, switched reluctance motor, torque ripple, torque sharing functions
In this paper, a comparison of the simple firing angle modulation method (FAM) and the more advanced torque sharing function (TSF)-based control of switched reluctance motor (SRM) is presented. The off-line procedure to tailor and optimize the parameters of chosen methods for off-the-shelf SRM is explained. Objective functions for optimization are motor efficiency, torque ripple, and integral square error. The off-line optimization uses a finite element method (FEM) model of the SRM. The model was verified by measurement on the SRM. Simulation results showed that FAM has comparable efficiency to TSF, but has a much higher value of torque ripple. The presented off-line procedure can be used for single or multi-objective optimization.
