Modeling and Enhanced Control of Hybrid Full Bridge−Half Bridge MMCs for HVDC Grid Studies
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: average value model, hybrid MMC, Modelling, modular multilevel converter (MMC)
Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) are expected to play an important role in future high voltage direct current (HVDC) grids. Moreover, advanced MMC topologies may include various submodule (SM) types. In this sense, the modeling of MMCs is paramount for HVDC grid studies. Detailed models of MMCs are cumbersome for electromagnetic transient (EMT) programs due to the high number of components and large simulation times. For this reason, simplified models that reduce the computation times while reproducing the dynamics of the MMCs are needed. However, up to now, the models already developed do not consider hybrid MMCs, which consist of different types of SMs. In this paper, a procedure to simulate MMCs having different SM topologies is proposed. First, the structure of hybrid MMCs and the modeling method is presented. Next, an enhanced procedure to compute the number of SMs to be inserted that takes into account the different behavior of full-bridge SMs (FB-SMs) and half-bridge submodu... [more]

Optimal Operation Strategy of ESS for EV Charging Infrastructure for Voltage Stabilization in a Secondary Feeder of a Distribution System
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: coordination operation, electrical vehicle charging infrastructure, energy storage system, ESS control strategy, stabilization method, state of charge, violation of voltage
The introduction of electrical vehicle charging infrastructure including electric vehicle (EV) charger renewable energy resource at the secondary feeder in a distribution system has been increased as one of countermeasure for global environmental issues. However, the electric vehicle charging (EVC) infrastructure may act as the peak load in the distribution system, which can adversely impact on the voltage stability when the electric vehicle is quickly charged. Therefore, to keep within the limit capacity of a secondary feeder and allowable limit for the feeder voltage, this paper proposes a stabilization method by an energy storage system (ESS) control strategy at the secondary feeder to not exceed the upper limit or fall below the lower limit. In addition, this paper presents an estimation method to keep the proper standard value of the state of charge (SOC). From the simulation results, the voltage stabilization operation by the ESS should make the feeder voltages of the distributio... [more]

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: finite element analysis, permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG), proportional integration, resonant controller, wind power generation
The permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) is widely used in high voltage DC transmission technology of wind power systems due to its high-power density, high reliability and simple maintenance. To meet the increasing rated power of the generator (≥10 MW), the multi-converter parallel connection is usually used, which significantly increases the complexity and cost of the system. Therefore, a new modular N* three-phase PMSG is proposed in this paper. Based on the structure and working principle of the generator, the finite element model is established, and the electromagnetic properties are obtained by finite element analysis. Aiming at the unique winding structure and characteristics of modular N* three-phase PMSG, a generator side current converter harmonic control algorithm, combining a resonant controller with the proportional-integral regulator, is proposed. The suppression of stator current harmonics at different speeds could be achieved by the proposed algorithm, and the... [more]

Collaborative Autonomous Optimization of Interconnected Multi-Energy Systems with Two-Stage Transactive Control Framework
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: constraint relaxation, multi-energy system, transactive control, two-stage bi-level optimization
Motivated by the benefits of multi-energy integration, this paper establishes a bi-level two-stage framework based on transactive control, to achieve the optimal energy provision among interconnected multi-energy systems (MESs). At the lower level, each MES autonomously determines the optimal setpoints of its controllable assets by solving a cost minimization problem, in which rolling horizon optimization is adopted to deal with the load and renewable energies’ stochastic features. A technique is further implemented for optimization model convexification by relaxing storages’ complementarity constraints, and its mathematical proof verifies the exactness of the relaxation. At the upper level, a coordinator is responsible for minimizing total costs of interconnected MESs while preventing transformer overloading. This collaborative problem is solved iteratively in a proposed two-stage transactive control framework that is compatible with operational time requirement while retaining scalab... [more]

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: excitation control, intra-region probability maximization, quasi-generalized Hamiltonian systems, stochastic multi-machine power systems, stochastic optimal control
With the penetration of renewable generation, electric vehicles and other random factors in power systems, the stochastic disturbances are increasing significantly, which are necessary to be handled for guarantying the security of systems. A novel stochastic optimal control strategy is proposed in this paper to reduce the impact of such stochastic continuous disturbances on power systems. The proposed method is effective in solving the problems caused by the stochastic continuous disturbances and has two significant advantages. First, a simplified and effective solution is proposed to analyze the system influenced by the stochastic disturbances. Second, a novel optimal control strategy is proposed in this paper to effectively reduce the impact of stochastic continuous disturbances. To be specific, a novel excitation controlled power systems model with stochastic disturbances is built in the quasi-generalized Hamiltonian form, which is further simplified into a lower-dimension model thr... March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: experimental validation, local controllers, multistage control technique, partial optimal control, time scales decoupling, transient PEMFC model
This paper presents a Proton-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) transient model in stack current cycling conditions and its partial optimal control. The derived model is used for a specific application of the recently published multistage control technique developed by the authors. The presented control-oriented transient PEMFC model is an extension of the steady-state control-oriented model previously established by the authors. The new model is experimentally validated for transient operating conditions on the Greenlight Innovation G60 testing station where the comparison of the experimental and simulation results is presented. The derived five-state nonlinear control-oriented model is linearized, and three clusters of eigenvalues can be clearly identified. This specific feature of the linearized model is known as the three timescale system. A novel multistage optimal control technique is particularly suitable for this class of systems. A Decision Support System Tool to Manage the Flexibility in Renewable Energy-Based Power Systems
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: decision support system, Energy Conversion, flexibility, renewable energy integration, Sustainability
Renewable Energy Sources (RES) have taken on an increasingly important role in the energy mix in the last few years, and it has been forecasted that this trend will continue in the future. The energy production from these sources is not dispatchable, and the increasing penetration of RES in energy mixes may therefore lead to a progressive loss of generation control and predictability. It has become clear that, to reach higher RES penetration levels, it is essential to increase power system flexibility in order to ensure stable operations are maintained. An ICT (Information and Communication Technology) tool that may be used to manage and optimize the flexibility offered by energy storage and conversion systems is described in this paper with specific reference to the Decision Support System (DSS) developed within the H2020 PLANET (PLAnning and operational tools for optimizing energy flows and synergies between energy NETworks) project. March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fuzzy fractional-order PID controller, low water head, multi-objective gravitational search algorithm, primary frequency modulation, pumped storage unit regulating system
Compared with conventional hydropower units, the pumped storage unit has the characteristics of diverse working conditions and frequent switching. Therefore, the stability and regulation quality of the primary frequency modulation transition process of the regulating system is very important. Due to the “S” characteristics of the pumped storage unit (PSU), the pumped storage unit regulating system has a strong nonlinearity, and the conventional proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller cannot provide high-quality control under low water head conditions. In this paper, the nonlinear PSU model with an elastic water hammer effect is studied, and the fuzzy fractional-order PID (FFOPID) controller is designed to improve the stability of the system. The membership function and the control parameters of the fractional-order PID are optimized based on the multi-objective gravitational search algorithm (MOGSA). The experimental results show that the optimized design of the FFOPID contro... [more]

A Novel Repetitive Control Enhanced Phase-Locked Loop for Synchronization of Three-Phase Grid-Connected Converters
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: phase-locked loop (PLL), repetitive control, synchronization, three-phase converter
This paper proposes the enhancement of a synchronous reference frame phase-locked loop in terms of its dynamic response and disturbance rejection capability. The improvements were undertaken in order to upgrade the converter grid support capability required by modern grid codes during grid faults. The proposed repetitive control-based filter is inserted in the loop filter structure of the phase-locked loop. For the initially proposed structure, the necessity of the phase angle error correction term was derived and added at the output of the loop filter. On a set of tests that included (i) phase jump; (ii) voltage sag; (iii) voltage harmonics; (iv) DC offset; (v) random noise and; (vi) frequency change, the synchronization algorithm with the proposed modification showed two desirable characteristics: (i) a high attenuation of oscillations on specific frequencies; and (ii) the instant compensation of the portion of the phase angle jump. A Comprehensive Analysis of Windings Electrical and Mechanical Faults Using a High-Frequency Model
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fault diagnosis, finite integration technique (FIT), frequency response analysis (FRA), high-frequency transformer modelling, power transformer
The measurement procedures for frequency response analysis (FRA) of power transformers are well documented in IEC and IEEE standards. However, the interpretation of FRA results is still far from reaching an accepted methodology and is limited to the analysis of the experts. The dilemma is that there are limited case studies available to understand the effect of different faults. Additionally, due to the destructive nature, it is not possible to apply the real mechanical deformations in the transformer windings to obtain the data. To solve these issues, in this contribution, the physical geometry of a three-phase transformer is simulated using 3D finite integration analysis to emulate the real transformer operation. The novelty of this model is that FRA traces are directly obtained from the 3D model of windings without estimating and solving lumped parameter circuit models. At first, the method is validated with a simple experimental setup. Afterwards, different mechanical and electrica... [more]

Characteristics Analysis and Measurement of Inverter-Fed Induction Motors for Stator and Rotor Fault Detection
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: characteristics analysis, Fault Detection, induction motor, rotor fault, stator fault, torque estimation
Inverter-fed induction motors (IMs) contain a serious of current harmonics, which become severer under stator and rotor faults. The resultant fault components in the currents affect the monitoring of the motor status. With this background, the fault components in the electromagnetic torque under stator faults considering harmonics are derived in this paper, and the fault components in current harmonics under rotor faults are analyzed. More importantly, the monitoring based on the fault characteristics (both in the torque and current) is proposed to provide reliable stator and rotor fault diagnosis. Specifically, the fault components induced by stator faults in the electromagnetic torque are discussed in this paper, and then, fault components are characterized in the torque spectrum to identify stator faults. To achieve so, a full-order flux observer is adopted to calculate the torque. On the other hand, under rotor faults, the sidebands caused by time and space harmonics in the current... [more]

Enhance of Energy Harvesting from Transverse Galloping by Actively Rotating the Galloping Body
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active control, energy harvesting, galloping
Kinematic rotary control is here proposed conceptually to enhance energy harvesting from Transverse Galloping. The effect of actively orientating the galloping body with respect to the incident flow, by imposing externally a rotation of the body proportional to the motion-induced angle of attack, is studied. To this end, a theoretical model is developed and analyzed, and numerical computations employing the Lattice Boltzmann Method are carried out. Good agreement is found between theoretical model predictions and numerical simulations results. It is found that it is possible to increase significantly the efficiency of energy harvesting with respect to the case without active rotation, which opens the path to consider this idea in practical realizations.

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: auxiliary power supply system, digital synchronous rectification, LLC DC-DC converter, phase shift control, SiC MOSFET
In this paper, a new auxiliary power supply system of magnetic levitation based on the LLC DC-DC converter is proposed. The switches of the DC-DC converter are SiC MOSFET, which enables high frequency, high temperature, and high power density. For further improving the efficiency of the system and realizing the stability of the output voltage under different load conditions, the digital synchronous rectification (DSR) based on the phase shift control strategy is proposed. The prototype of the LLC DC-DC converter based on SiC MOSFET is implemented, which can realize zero voltage switching (ZVS) and zero current switching (ZCS). Then, the thermal image of DSR is presented, which proves that the power loss of SiC MOSFET with DSR is relatively low. Additionally, the system efficiency among the Si IGBT, SiC MOSFET, and SiC MOSFET with DSR is analyzed and the prototype demonstrates 98% peak efficiency. March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: corrective control, post-contingency overflow, preventive control, security-constrained OPF, thermal inertia, transmission line
For the corrective security-constrained optimal power flow (OPF) model, there exists a post-contingency stage due to the time delay of corrective measures. Line overflows in this stage may cause cascading failures. This paper proposes that the thermal inertia of transmission lines can be used to cope with post-contingency overflows. An enhanced security-constrained OPF model is established and line dynamic thermal behaviors are quantified. The post-contingency stage is divided into a response substage and a ramping substage and the highest temperatures are limited by thermal rating constraints. A solving strategy based on Benders decomposition is proposed to solve the established model. The original problem is decomposed into a master problem for preventive control and two subproblems for corrective control feasibility check and line thermal rating check. Keywords: earth–air heat exchanger, Energy Efficiency, smart and integrated control systems, thermal comfort, thermal mass
The growing popularity of buildings with integrated sub-systems requires a review of methods to optimize the preheating of ventilation air. An integrated system permits using geothermal heat storage parallel to the direct outdoor air intake with additional treatment in the mechanical room as a part of building an automatic control system. The earth−air heat exchanger (EAHX) has many advantages but also has many unanswered questions. Some of the drawbacks are: A possible entry of radon gas, high humidity in the shoulder seasons, and the need for two different air intake sources with a choice that depends on the actual weather conditions. In winter the EAHX may be used continuously to ensure thermal comfort, while in other seasons its operation must be automatically controlled. To generate missing information about EAHX technology we examined two nearly identical EAHX systems, one placed in the ground next to a building and the other under the basement slab. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: dynamics of flight, extended Kalman filter, Total Energy Control System
This paper presents an analysis of a Total Energy Control System (TECS) introduced by Lambregts to control unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) velocity and altitude by using the total energy distribution. Furthermore, an extended Kalman filter (EKF) approach was used to predict aircraft response in terms of angular rates and linear acceleration during a test flight campaign. From both approaches, state equations were obtained to model the aircraft using Matlab-Simulink. From an aerodynamic study, airplane characteristics were obtained in terms of non-dimensional derivatives and compared to those obtained from the experimental methods. It was determined that TECS approach was very accurate; however, disturbance errors could be decreased by adjusting some model parameters. On the other hand, it was difficult to obtain a real estimation from the EKF method due to the presence of turbulence during flight and the relatively low inertia of the scale model. Input Disturbance Suppression for Unidirectional Matrix Converter with a Stability-Enhancing Modulation Scheme
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: feedback control, input voltage disturbance, matrix converter, stability
This paper proposes an input voltage disturbance suppression control strategy for the unidirectional matrix converter (UMC) with a new modulation scheme enhancing the stability. In the new scheme, the modulation index is directly, rather than reversely, proportional to the instantaneous amplitude of input filter capacitor voltages. Contrary to traditional schemes, the stability of the UMC with this new scheme is even better with the increase of the transferred active power, which is particularly suitable for applications with sinusoidal and balanced input conditions. As to the disturbed input conditions, the new scheme could introduce low-frequency harmonics into output currents. To address this issue, a feedback control strategy of output current amplitude is further proposed to eliminate the additional harmonics. Stability analysis of a UMC with the proposed modulation scheme and feedback control strategy is presented. Experimental results have verified the validity of the proposed c... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: harmonic, LADRC, standalone inverter, virtual harmonic impedance
This paper proposes a harmonic compensation control with disturbance rejection function for a standalone inverter. Due to the LC type three-phase three-leg inverter is connected to nonlinear loads, low-order harmonic components appears in the inverter output current. These harmonic current generate harmonic voltage drops when flowing through the filter inductor and the feeder impedance, which causes the output voltage of the inverter distorted. In order to compensate harmonics and produce sinusoidal voltage without additional compensation devices, virtual harmonic impedance method can be added to the fundamental voltage control. Due to the compensation effect of virtual harmonic impedance are very sensitive to the fluctuation of filter inductance. Therefore, inductance variation, as a disturbance in physical system, should be considered. In today’s connected world, there is a tendency of connectivity even in the sectors which conventionally have been not so connected in the past, such as power systems substations. Substations have seen considerable digitalization of the grid hence, providing much more available insights than before. This has all been possible due to connectivity, digitalization and automation of the power grids. Interestingly, this also means that anybody can access such critical infrastructures from a remote location and gone are the days of physical barriers. The power of connectivity and control makes it a much more challenging task to protect critical industrial control systems. This capability comes at a price, in this case, increasing the risk of potential cyber threats to substations. With all such potential risks, it is important that they can be traced back and attributed to any potential threats to their roots.
