Keywords: convolutional neural network, deep learning, fault diagnosis, induction motor drive, inter-turn short circuits
In this paper, the idea of using a convolutional neural network (CNN) for the detection and classification of induction motor stator winding faults is presented. The diagnosis inference of the stator inter-turn short-circuits is based on raw stator current data. It offers the possibility of using the diagnostic signal direct processing, which could replace well known analytical methods. Tests were carried out for various levels of stator failures. In order to assess the sensitivity of the applied CNN-based detector to motor operating conditions, the tests were carried out for variable load torques and for different values of supply voltage frequency. Experimental tests were conducted on a specially designed setup with the 3 kW induction motor of special construction, which allowed for the physical modelling of inter-turn short-circuits in each of the three phases of the machine. The on-line tests prove the possibility of using CNN in the real-time diagnostic system with the high accura... [more]

Keywords: direct flux control, inductance matrix, motor control, motor drive, PMSM, sensorless technique, synchronous motor
In the field of sensorless control of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs), different techniques based on machine anisotropies have been studied and implemented successfully. Nevertheless, most proposed approaches extract the rotor position information from the measured machine currents, that, when applied to low-power machines, might require high-bandwidth current sensors. An interesting alternative is given by sensorless techniques that exploit the star-point voltage of PMSMs, such as the direct flux control technique. This work aims at analyzing the conditions of applicability of such technique by considering a more thorough description of the machine inductance matrix. After a comprehensive mathematical description of the technique and characterization of the machine anisotropy information that is extracted from the star-point voltage, simulation as well as experimental results conducted on a test machine are presented and discussed in order to validate the proposed theory.

Keywords: fixed frequency, LLC resonant converter, micro-inverter, MPPT, phase-shift control
Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) control is an essential part of every photovoltaic (PV) system, in order to overcome any change in ambient environmental conditions and ensure operation at maximum power.. Recently, micro-inverters have gained a lot of attention due to their ability to track the true MPP for each individual PV module, which is considered a powerful solution to overcome the partial shading and power mismatch problems which exist in series-connected panels. Although the LLC resonant converter has high efficiency and high boosting ability, traditional MPPT techniques based on Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) do not work well with it. In this paper, a fixed frequency predictive MPPT technique is presented for the LLC resonant converter to be used as the first-stage in a PV micro-inverter. Using predictive control enhances the tracking efficiency and reduces the steady state oscillation. Operation with fixed switching frequency for the LLC resonant converter improves the tota... [more]

Keywords: current loop decoupling, delay compensation, Discrete current controller, FESS, High-speed PMSM/G
High-speed Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Motors/Generators (PMSMs/Gs) in a Flywheel Energy Storage System (FESS) are faced with high cross-coupling voltages and low switching-to-fundamental frequency ratios. High cross-coupling voltages between d-q axis current loops lead to transient current errors, which is more serious at lower switching-to-fundamental-frequency ratios. If the delays are not properly considered during the current controller design in a digital control system, the low switching-to-fundamental-frequency ratios may result in oscillatory or unstable responses. In this study, an accurate discrete current controller for high-speed PMSMs/Gs is proposed based on an accurate discrete model that takes the phase and magnitude errors generated during the sampling period into consideration, and an Extended State Observer (ESO) is applied to estimate and compensate the back EMF error. The cross-coupling problem is well settled, and the current loop dynamic at lower switching-to-fu... [more]

Keywords: deferrable loads, demand side management, Fuel Cells, Hydrogen, Model Predictive Control, solar photovoltaic energy, standalone renewable energy systems
This paper addresses the energy management of a standalone renewable energy system. The system is configured as a microgrid, including photovoltaic generation, a lead-acid battery as a short term energy storage system, hydrogen production, and several loads. In this microgrid, an energy management strategy has been incorporated that pursues several objectives. On the one hand, it aims to minimize the amount of energy cycled in the battery, in order to reduce the associated losses and battery size. On the other hand, it seeks to take advantage of the long-term surplus energy, producing hydrogen and extracting it from the system, to be used in a fuel cell hybrid electric vehicle. A crucial factor in this approach is to accommodate the energy consumption to the energy demand and to achieve this, a model predictive control (MPC) scheme is proposed. In this context, proper models for solar estimation, hydrogen production, and battery energy storage will be presented. Moreover, the controlle... [more]

Keywords: building integrated electrochromic, control strategies, device architectures, energy saving, visual comfort
Electrochromic systems for smart windows make it possible to enhance energy efficiency in the construction sector, in both residential and tertiary buildings. The dynamic modulation of the spectral properties of a glazing, within the visible and infrared ranges of wavelengths, allows one to adapt the thermal and optical behavior of a glazing to the everchanging conditions of the environment in which the building is located. This allows appropriate control of the penetration of solar radiation within the building. The consequent advantages are manifold and are still being explored in the scientific literature. On the one hand, the reduction in energy consumption for summer air conditioning (and artificial lighting, too) becomes significant, especially in "cooling dominated" climates, reaching high percentages of saving, compared to common transparent windows; on the other hand, the continuous adaptation of the optical properties of the glass to the changing external conditions makes it... Keywords: control volume method, diagnostic system, experimental verification, inverse problems
The purpose of this work is to formulate a method which can be used to solve nonlinear inverse heat conduction problems and to calculate the heat transfer coefficient distribution on the unknown boundary. The domain under consideration is divided into control volumes in polar coordinates, and heat balance equations are written. Based on temperature transients measured in selected points on the outer surface, temperature values in other points of the domain are determined. Finally, the heat transfer coefficient distribution on the inner surface with the unknown boundary condition is calculated from the presented heat balance equation. The proposed inverse method was verified experimentally using a collector that is part of a semi-industrial laboratory system. This collector is a horizontal, cylindrical thick-walled tank with flat side walls with outlets that enable oil supply and removal. Each side wall has an additional connector to ensure venting. The calculations made it possible to... [more]

To investigate the oscillation problems in power systems with modular multilevel converters (MMCs), a disturbance-state model of the MMC under P/Q control mode is established based on the harmonic state-space (HSS) method. Firstly, the basic structure of the MMC with P/Q control is presented, including the circuit structure and the controller structure. Next, the dynamic characteristics of each module in the MMC are described with the time-domain state-space model or the s-domain transfer function. The complete controller structure is considered, including the P/Q outer-loop controller, the inner-loop control, the phase-locked loop (PLL), the circulating current suppression control (CCSC) and the control delay. On the basis, the disturbance-state HSS model of the MMC and its corresponding steady-state condition are established by the HSS method. Lastly, the case studies are performed to verify the accuracy of the proposed model, based on an MMC based test system in PSCAD/EMTDC. Moreove... [more]

Keywords: active power filter, DC-link voltage, double closed-loop feedback control, droop controller, source current control
Active power filters (APFs) are dynamic power electronic devices that suppress harmonics and reactive power. To simplify the detection and extraction of traditional APF harmonics and reactive current, this paper proposes a direct source current control based on a three-phase three-wire shunt APF. The compensation principle and control method of the source current are analyzed systematically. The currents can be controlled without static errors by a proportional-integral (PI) controller in d-q rotating coordinates. Therefore, the compensation accuracy and dynamic performance of the system can be improved by the control strategy. Moreover, considering the grid voltage fluctuations, a droop regulator is proposed to address the impact of DC-link voltages on APF power losses and compensation performance. The regulator is combined with a traditional voltage outer loop PI control to achieve a comprehensive optimization between the power loss and compensation performance of the APF system. Fin... [more]

Keywords: dynamic stall, flow control, nanosecond pulse discharge, plasma actuators, pressure measurement
The flow control effects of a nanosecond-pulse-driven dielectric barrier discharge plasma actuator (ns-DBDPA) in dynamic stall flow were experimentally investigated. The ns-DBDPA was installed on the leading edge of an airfoil model designed in the form of a helicopter blade. The model was oscillated periodically around 25% of the chord length. Aerodynamic coefficients were calculated using the pressure distribution, which was obtained by the measurement of the unsteady pressure by sensors inside the model. The flow control effect and its sensitivity to pitching oscillation and ns-DBDPA control parameters are discussed using the aerodynamic coefficients. The freestream velocity, the mean of the angle of attack, and the reduced frequency were employed as the oscillation parameters. Moreover, the nondimensional frequency of the pulse voltage, the peak pulse voltage, and the type and position of the ns-DBDPA were adopted as the control parameters. The result shows that the ns-DBDPA can de... [more]

Keywords: ELM, grey wolf optimizer, multi-domain fault diagnosis, principal components analysis (PCA), VMD
Since variational mode decomposition (VMD) was proposed, it has been widely used in condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of mechanical equipment. However, the parameters K and α in the VMD algorithm need to be set before decomposition, which causes VMD to be unable to decompose adaptively and obtain the best result for signal decomposition. Therefore, this paper optimizes the VMD algorithm. On this basis, this paper also proposes a method of multi-domain feature extraction of signals and combines an extreme learning machine (ELM) to realize comprehensive and accurate fault diagnosis. First, VMD is optimized according to the improved grey wolf optimizer; second, the feature vectors of the time, frequency, and time-frequency domains are calculated, which are synthesized after dimensionality reduction; ultimately, the synthesized vectors are input into the ELM for training and classification. The experimental results show that the proposed method can decompose the signal adaptively, w... [more]

Keywords: artificial neural network, briquettes production, decision support system, Miscanthus, multilayer perceptron, willow
The biomass is regarded as a part of renewable energy sources (RES), which can satisfy energy demands. Biomass obtained from plantations is characterized by low bulk density, which increases transport and storage costs. Briquetting is a technology that relies on pressing biomass with the aim of obtaining a denser product (briquettes). In the production of solid biofuels, the technological as well as material variables significantly influence the densification process, and as a result influence the end quality of briquette. This process progresses differently for different materials. Therefore, the optimal selection of process’ parameters is very difficult. It is necessary to use a decision support tool—decision support system (DSS). The purpose of the work was to develop a decision support system that would indicate the optimal parameters for conducting the process of producing Miscanthus and willow briquettes (pre-comminution, milling and briquetting), briquette parameters (durability... By analyzing the steering dynamics, the formulas of additional steering resistance are given. Aiming at the multidimensional continuous system that cannot be solved by traditional optimization methods, the deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) algorithm for deep reinforcement learning is adopted. Each wheel speed and deflection angle are selected as the state, the distribution ratio of drive torque is the optimized action and the state of charge (SOC) is the reward. After completing a large number of training for vehicle model, the algorithm is verified under conventional steering and extreme steering conditions. The maximum SOC decline of the vehicle can be reduced by about 5% under conventional steering conditions based on the motor efficiency mapused. The combination of artificial intelligence techno... March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fuzzy clustering, multi-model predictive control, wind power generation
To deal with the randomness and uncertainty of the wind power generation process, this paper proposes the use of the clustering method to complement the multi-model predictive control algorithm for active power control. Firstly, the fuzzy clustering algorithm is adopted to classify actual measured data; then, the forgetting factor recursive least square method is used to establish the multi-model of the system as the prediction model. Secondly, the model predictive controller is designed to use the measured wind speed as disturbance, the pitch angle as the control variable, and the active power as the output. Finally, the parameters and measured data of wind generators in operation in Western China are adopted for simulation and verification. Compared to the single model prediction control method, the adaptive multi-model predictive control method can yield a much higher prediction accuracy, which can significantly eliminate the instability in the process of wind power generation.

Keywords: active flow control, adjoint-based method, Gaussian process regression, Model Predictive Control, ridge regression
Complexity of online computation is a drawback of model predictive control (MPC) when applied to the Navier−Stokes equations. To reduce the computational complexity, we propose a method to approximate the MPC with an explicit control law by using regression analysis. In this paper, we extracted two state-feedback control laws and two output-feedback control laws for flow around a cylinder as a benchmark. The state-feedback control laws that feed back different quantities to each other were extracted by ridge regression, and the two output-feedback control laws, whose measurement output is the surface pressure, were extracted by ridge regression and Gaussian process regression. In numerical simulations, the state-feedback control laws were able to suppress vortex shedding almost completely. While the output-feedback control laws could not suppress vortex shedding completely, they moderately improved the drag of the cylinder. Moreover, we confirmed that these control laws have some degre... [more]

Keywords: DC-DC converter, MPC, MPPT, photovoltaic system, voltage regulation
This paper proposes a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and voltage regulation method based on model predictive control (MPC) for the two-stage grid-tied photovoltaic (PV) system, which can achieve MPPT and output voltage regulation of a PV system simultaneously. The MPPT algorithm based on MPC is implemented in a DC-DC boost converter. The reference voltage at maximum power point is obtained by dual step Incremental Conductance (I&C) algorithm under the rapidly varying illumination intensity, and the MPPT controller only needs to minimize one cost function of PV current, without pulse width modulation (PWM) module. To inject the generated PV power into the grid with high quality, this paper designs voltage regulation controller based on MPC to maintain the output voltage of the PV system at the desired value. The MPC controller outputs the optimal duty signal with the input and state constraints in the inner loop, and the PI controller in the outer loop is designed to improve the dy... [more]

Keywords: cable screen, earthing system distribution feeder, Fault Detection, fault location, mixed cable-overhead line, protection relay
The paper analyzes the utilization of cable screen currents for earth fault identification and location. Attention is paid on cable and mixed feeders—cable and overhead lines. The principle of operation is based on utilization of 3 criterion values: Ratio of cable screen earthing current and zero sequence cable core current—RF110/15, phase shift between cable screen earthing current and zero sequence cable core current—α and cable screen admittance defined as a ratio of cable screen earthing current and zero sequence voltage—Y0cs. Earth fault location is possible thanks to discovered relation between RF110/15 and α, whereas Y0cs allows for reliable detection of earth faults. Detection and identification are very important because it allows to increase the reliability of supply—reduce downtime and number of consumers affected by the fault. The article presents a phase to ground fault current flow for different power system configurations. At the end solution, which improves location cap... [more]

A novel adaptive high starting torque (HST) scalar control scheme (SCS) for induction motors (IM) is proposed in this paper. It uses a new adaptive-passivity-based controller (APBC) proposed herein for a class of nonlinear systems, with linear explicit parametric dependence and linear stable internal dynamics, which encompasses the IM dynamical model. The main advantage of the HST-SCS includes the ability to move loads with starting-torque over the nominal torque with a simple and cost-effective implementation without needing a rotor speed sensor, variable observers, or parameter estimators. The proposed APBC is based on a direct control scheme using a normalized fixed gain (FG) to fine-tune the adaptive controller parameters. The basic SCS for induction motors (IM) and the HST-SCS were applied to an IM of 200 HP and tested using a real-time simulator controller OPAL-RT showing the achievement of the proposal goal.

Keywords: disturbance observer, fault-tolerant control, load frequency control, multi-area interconnected power system, prescribed performance
The goal of this study is to develop a disturbance observer-based prescribed performance fault-tolerant controller (PPFTC) for a multi-area interconnected power system (MIPS) with a hybrid energy storage system (HESS). The mathematical model of the MIPS with HESS is introduced first. Then the load disturbance estimation is obtained using a disturbance observer (DO) approach. By introducing two additional functions, the tracking error is bounded to achieve the desired response. The PPFTC is further developed based on the DO ensuring that the area control error (ACE) of the MIPS asymptotically converges to zero. Finally, the effectiveness of the given PPFTC and DO are inspected through the use of the Lyapunov theory and simulated results.

The dynamic features of microgrid operation, such as on-grid/off-grid operation mode, the intermittency of distributed generators, and its dynamic topology due to its ability to reconfigure itself, cause misfiring of conventional protection schemes. To solve this issue, adaptive protection schemes that use robust communication systems have been proposed for the protection of microgrids. However, the cost of this solution is significantly high. This paper presented an intelligent fault detection (FD) system for microgrids on the basis of local measurements and machine learning (ML) techniques. This proposed FD system provided a smart level to intelligent electronic devices (IED) installed on the microgrid through the integration of ML models. This allowed each IED to autonomously determine if a fault occurred on the microgrid, eliminating the requirement of robust communication infrastructure between IEDs for microgrid protection. Additionally, the proposed system presented a methodolog... [more]
