March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbon emission regulations, deterioration, emissions reduction, inventory control, partial backlogging, time-varying demand
Climate warming nowadays has caused people to increasingly enhance public awareness about carbon emissions from industries. In the storing industry, inventory management for deteriorating items is crucial in the business competition. To slow down the deterioration and ensure the quality of products, the items are usually stored in certain temperature-controlled environment. However, a lot of carbon emissions of the inventory system are caused by these warehousing activities. In a finite panning period, this paper studies a continuous review inventory system and proposes inventory models to analyze the impacts of carbon emissions on inventory system for deteriorating items with a general time-varying demand, in which shortages are allowed, and the customer demand during shortage period is partially backlogged till the next replenishment. Under carbon emission regulations, the existence and uniqueness of the optimal solution to each model is explored and comparisons of optimality among t... [more]

Keywords: flexible AC transmission systems, modular multilevel converters, modular multilevel matrix converter, unified power flow controller
The modular multilevel matrix converter has been proposed as a suitable option for high power applications such as flexible AC transmission systems. Among flexible AC transmission systems, the unified power flow controller stands out as the most versatile device. However, the application of the modular multilevel matrix converter has not been thoroughly analyzed for unified power flow controller applications due to the sophisticated control systems that are needed when its ports operate at equal frequencies. In this context, this paper presents a cascaded control structure for a modular multilevel matrix converter based unified power flow controller. The control is implemented in a decoupled reference frame, and it features proportional-integral external controllers and internal proportional multi-resonant controllers. Additionally, the input port of the modular multilevel matrix converter is regulated in grid-feeding mode, and the output port is regulated in grid-forming mode to provi... [more]

Keywords: finite element analysis, linear regression, spindle thermal elongation, thermal displacement, thermal error
Thermal error is one of the main reasons for the loss of accuracy in lathe machining. In this study, a thermal deformation compensation model is presented that can reduce the influence of spindle thermal error on machining accuracy. The method used involves the collection of temperature data from the front and rear spindle bearings by means of embedded sensors in the bearing housings. Room temperature data were also collected as well as the thermal elongation of the main shaft. The data were used in a linear regression model to establish a robust model with strong predictive capability. Three methods were used: (1) Comsol was used for finite element analysis and the results were compared with actual measured temperatures. (2) This method involved the adjustment of the parameters of the linear regression model using the indicators of the coefficient of determination, root mean square error, mean square error, and mean absolute error, to find the best parameters for a spindle thermal dis... Analysis of Model-Based Tuning Method of PID Controller for Excitation Systems Considering Measurement Delay
Kyoung-Min Choo, Chung-Yuen Won
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: auto voltage regulator, excitation system, synchronous generator
In this paper, a model-based tuning method for a PID controller of excitation systems based on a simplified model that considers measurement delay is proposed. The conventional model-based tuning method, which has been studied previously, uses a simplified excitation system model that ignores all the delay components. However, since the rms voltage measurement can take hundreds of milliseconds to calculate depending on the system settings, this delay cannot be ignored when the required response needs to be as fast as the measurement delay. Furthermore, the linearity of the measurement method is not taken into account because the measurement delay has already been ignored. Therefore, in this paper, a simplified model that considers measurement delay and its linearity is proposed, and a model-based tuning method of PID controllers for two kinds of excitation systems is proposed and compared with the conventional method by analysis. To verify the analysis and proposed tuning method, exper... [more]

Keywords: anaerobic digestion, coupled reactors, granular activated carbon, micro-aeration, Organic fraction of municipal solid waste
In an anaerobic digestion (AD) process, the hydrolysis phase is often limited when substrates with high concentrations of solids are used. We hypothesized that applying micro-aeration in the hydrolysis phase and the application of granular activated carbon (GAC) in the methanogenesis phase could make the AD process more efficient. A packed bed reactor (PBR) coupled with an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) was conducted, and its effects on methane generation were evaluated. The micro-aeration rate applied in PBR was 254 L-air/kg-Total solids (TS)-d was compared with a control reactor. Micro-aeration showed that it reduced the hydrolysis time and increased the organic matter solubilization as chemical oxygen demand (COD) increasing 200%, with a volatile fatty acids (VFAs) increment higher than 300%, compared to the control reactor (without aeration). Our findings revealed that the implementations of microaeration and GAC in the two-phase AD system could enhance methane production... [more]

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy storage system, frequency profile, load frequency control, virtual inertia, virtual synchronous machine
The advantages of increased penetration of distributed generation are also accompanied by several challenges, low inertia being one of them, which threatens the grid stability. An emerging approach to confront this problem is the introduction of so-called virtual inertia (VI) provided by energy storage systems (ESS). In contrast to the already available literature which considers a conventional load frequency control (LFC) model, this work concentrates on a modified LFC model as the integration of a large portion of ESS changes the inertia constant ( H ) of a power system. A sensitivity function is derived that shows the effects of changes in H on the power system’s frequency response. With the help of the developed mathematical model and simulation results, it is shown that a difference in the actual and calculated values of H can deteriorate the system performance and economy. As one of the reasons for this difference is improper modeling of ESS in the LFC model, ther... [more]

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: capacitive reactive power, distribution lines, PV power plants, voltage instabilities
The voltage instabilities in the distribution lines are primarily related to the integration of photovoltaic power plants with the local grids. Conventional tap-changers cannot compensate for the rapid disparities between generated and consumed power because of sluggish dynamic response. This article presents an effective method and control algorithm to improve the voltage instabilities of distribution lines. Analytical calculation confirms that the application of capacitive reactive power on load is beneficial to keep the voltage at the permissible level. Importantly, the severe concern about the current increment with voltage enhancement is also addressed. The dynamic behavior during capacitance switching is studied using simulation experiments. It is suggested that capacitance is connected to the load for the only time of voltage drop until the transformation ratio changes to the desired level. This article provides an explanation and solution for voltage deviations of electricity d... [more]

Keywords: bluff body, drag coefficient, flow control, PIV, plasma actuator, static pressure distributions
An experimental investigation of active flow control on a three-dimensional (3D) curved surface bluff body was conducted by using a string-type plasma actuator. The 3D bluff body model tested in this study was composed of a quarter sphere and a half cylinder, and the Reynolds number based on the diameter of half cylinder was set at 1.3 × 104. The modulation drive was adopted for flow control, and the control effects of variations in dimensionless burst frequency (fm) normalized by the width of the model and freestream velocity were studied. Velocity distributions analyzed by particle image velocimetry showed that the recirculation region behind the model shrank due to the flow control. The static pressure distributions on the back surface of the model tended to decrease under any fm set in this study, especially in the ranges of 0.40 ≤ fm ≤ 0.64. The drag coefficient reached its maximum value under the similar ranges of fm. Although the aerodynamic wake sharpening was observed due to t... [more]

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: current balancing algorithm, level-shifted SPWM, medium-voltage applications, motor drives, multilevel current source inverter, phase-shifted carrier SPWM, STATCOM
In high power, medium voltage applications, Current Source Inverters CSIs are connected in parallel to accommodate high DC currents. Using a proper multilevel modulation technique, parallel-connected CSIs can operate as a Multilevel CSI (MCSI). The most common modulation technique for MCSIs is the Phase-Shifted Carrier SPWM (PSC-SPWM). The proper operation of the MCSI requires each CSI modules to have the same average current flowing through its sharing inductors. In practice, the average currents of the CSI modules deviate from their nominal values. Therefore, current balancing mechanisms must be implemented. In the literature, several solutions have been proposed to tackle the current imbalance problem. Most of these solutions are based on altering the phase-shift or magnitude of the carrier waveforms of the PSC-SPWM. They require dedicated PI controllers and they are applicable to MCSIs with specific numbers of levels. This paper proposes a Current Balancing Algorithm (CBA) that can... [more]

Keywords: buck converter, constant on-time control, electromagnetic interference, spread-spectrum mechanism
In this paper, a triangular spread-spectrum mechanism is proposed to suppress the electromagnetic interference (EMI) of a DC-DC buck converter. The proposed triangular spread-spectrum mechanism, which is implemented in the chip, can avoid modifying the printed circuit board of switching regulators. In addition, a lower ripple of output voltage of switching regulators and a better system stability can be realized by the inductive DC resistance (DCR) current sensing circuit. The chip is fabricated by using TSMC 0.18-μm 1P6M CMOS technology. The chip area including PADs is 1.2 × 1.15 mm2. The input voltage range is 2.7~3.3 V and the output voltage is 1.8 V. The maximum load current is 700 mA. The off-chip inductor and capacitor are 3.3 μH and 10 μF, respectively. The experimental results demonstrate that the maximum spur of the proposed DC-DC buck converter with the triangular spread-spectrum mechanism improves to 14dBm. Moreover, the transient recovery time of step-up and step-down loads... [more]
A Hybrid Model for Lift Response to Dynamic Actuation on a Stalled Airfoil
Xuanhong An, David R. Williams, Maziar S. Hemati
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dynamic actuation, flow control, low-order modeling
The current research focuses on modeling the lift response due to dynamic (time-varying) “burst-type” actuation on a stalled airfoil. Here, the “burst-type” actuation refers to the synthetic jet (generated from the actuator) that is used for flow separation mitigation. Dynamic “burst-type” actuation exhibits two different characteristic dynamic behaviors within the system; namely, the high-frequency and low-frequency components. These characteristics introduce modeling challenges. In this paper, we propose a hybrid model composed of two individual sub-models, one for each of the two frequencies. The lift response due to high-frequency burst actuation is captured using a convolution model. The low-frequency component due to nonlinear burst-burst interactions is captured using a Wiener model, consisting of linear time-invariant dynamics and a static output nonlinearity. The hybrid model is validated using data from wind tunnel experiments.

Keywords: finite element method, magnetic field, mixed convection, pulsating flow, T-shaped object
Mixed convection of carbon-nanotube/water nanofluid in a vented cavity with an inner conductive T-shaped object was examined under pulsating flow conditions under magnetic field effects with finite element method. Effects of different parameters such as Richardson number (between 0.05 and 50), Hartmann number (between 0 and 30), cavity wall inclination (between 0 ∘ and 10 ∘ ), size (between 0.1 H and 0.4 H) and orientation (between −90 ∘ and 90 ∘ ) of the T-shaped object, and amplitude (between 0.5 and 0.9) and frequency (Strouhal number between 0.25 and 5) of pulsating flow on the convective flow features were studied. It was observed that the average Nusselt number enhanced with the rise of strength of magnetic field, solid nanoparticle volume fraction, and amplitude of the pulsation, while the effect was opposite for higher values of Ri number and cavity wall inclination angle. The presence of the T-shaped object and adjusting its size and orientation h... [more]

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Energy Storage, flywheel, force control, magnetic bearings, magnetic levitation, permanent magnets
The paper presents a novel configuration of an axial hybrid magnetic bearing (AHMB) for the suspension of steel flywheels applied in power-intensive energy storage systems. The combination of a permanent magnet (PM) with excited coil enables one to reduce the power consumption, to limit the system volume, and to apply an effective control in the presence of several types of disturbances. The electromagnetic design of the AHMB parts is carried out by parametric finite element analyses with the purpose to optimize the force performances as well as the winding inductance affecting the electrical supply rating and control capability. Such investigation considers both the temperature dependence of the PM properties and the magnetic saturation effects. The electrical parameters and the force characteristics are then implemented in a control scheme, reproducing the electromechanical behavior of the AHMB-flywheel system. The parameter tuning of the controllers is executed by a Matlab/Simulink... [more]

Keywords: back-to-back converter, current harmonic compensation, power flow control
Nowadays, the use of power converters to control active and reactive power in AC−AC grid-connected systems has increased. With respect to indirect AC−AC converters, the tendency is to enable the back-to-back (BTB) voltage source converter (VSC) as an active power filter (APF) to compensate current harmonics. Most of the reported works use the BTB-VSC as an auxiliary topology that, combined with other topologies, is capable of active power regulation, reactive power compensation and current harmonic filtering. With the analysis presented in this work, the framework of the dynamics associated with the control loops is established and it is demonstrated that BTB-VSC can perform the three tasks for which, in the reviewed literature, at least two different topologies are reported. The proposed analysis works to support the performance criteria of the BTB-VSC when it executes the three control actions simultaneously and the total current harmonic distortion is reduced from 27.21% to 6.16% wi... Keywords: Bayesian hyper-parameter optimization, fault diagnosis, gradient boosting algorithm, LightGBM, maximum information coefficient
It is widely accepted that conventional boost algorithms are of low efficiency and accuracy in dealing with big data collected from wind turbine operations. To address this issue, this paper is devoted to the application of an adaptive LightGBM method for wind turbine fault detections. To this end, the realization of feature selection for fault detection is firstly achieved by utilizing the maximum information coefficient to analyze the correlation among features in supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) of wind turbines. After that, a performance evaluation criterion is proposed for the improved LightGBM model to support fault detections. In this scheme, by embedding the confusion matrix as a performance indicator, an improved LightGBM fault detection approach is then developed. Based on the adaptive LightGBM fault detection model, a fault detection strategy for wind turbine gearboxes is investigated. To demonstrate the applications of the proposed algorithms and methods, a... [more]

Keywords: chattering avoidance, interconnected systems, reduced-order sliding mode estimator, unknown time-varying delay, variable structure control, without reaching phase
Variable structure control with sliding mode can provide good control performance and excellent robustness. Unfortunately, the chattering phenomenon investigated due to discontinuous switching gain restricting their applications. In this paper, a chattering free improved variable structure control (IVSC) for a class of mismatched uncertain interconnected systems with an unknown time-varying delay is proposed. A sliding function is first established to eliminate the reaching phase in traditional variable structure control (TVSC). Next, a new reduced-order sliding mode estimator (ROSME) without time-varying delay is constructed to estimate all unmeasurable state variables of plants. Then, based on the Moore-Penrose inverse approach, a decentralized single-phase robustness sliding mode controller (DSPRSMC) is synthesized, which is independent of time delays. A DSPRSMC solves a complex interconnection problem with an unknown time-varying delay term and drives the system’s trajectories onto... [more]

Current disquisition is presented to excogitate heat and mass transfer features of second grade fluid flow generated by an inclined cylinder under the appliance of diffusion, radiative heat flux, convective and Joule heating effects. Mathematical modelling containing constitutive expressions by obliging fundamental conservation laws are constructed in the form of partial differential equations. Afterwards, transformations are implemented to convert the attained partial differential system into ordinary differential equations. An implicit finite difference method known as the Keller Box was chosen to extract the solution. The impact of the flow-controlling variables on velocity, temperature and concentration profiles are evaluated through graphical visualizations. Variations in skin friction, heat transfer and mass flux coefficients against primitive variables are manipulated through numerical data. It is inferred from the analysis that velocity of fluid increases for incrementing magni... [more]

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: SAGD, sand control, slotted liner
Sand production from a poorly consolidated reservoir could give rise to some severe problems during production. Holding the load bearing solids in place is the main goal of any sand control technique. The only sand control techniques that have found applications in steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) are some of the mechanical methods, including wire wrapped screens, slotted liners and more recently, punched screens. Slotted liner is one of the most effective mechanical sand control methods in the unconsolidated reservoir exploitation, which has proven to be the preferred sand control method in the SAGD operations. The main advantage of the slotted liners that makes them suitable for SAGD operations is their superior mechanical integrity for the completion of long horizontal wells. This study is an attempt to increase the existing understanding of the fines migration, sand production, and plugging tendency for slotted liners by using a novel large-scale scaled completion test (SCT)... Keywords: dynamic hourly method, solar control, stagnation, stratified storage, thermal solar
Thermal solar systems are interesting solutions to reduce CO 2 emissions and gradually promote the use of renewable sources. However, sizing such systems and analysing their behavior are still challenging issues, especially for the trade-off between useful solar energy maximization and stagnation risk minimization. The new EPB (Energy Performance of Buildings) standard EN 15316-4-3:2017 offers several methods to evaluate the performance of a forced circulation solar system. One of them is a dynamic hourly method that must be used together with EN 15316-5:2017 for the simulation of the stratified storage tank connected with the solar loop. In this work, such dynamic hourly method is extended to provide more realistic predictions. In particular, modeling of the pump operation due to solar fluid temperature exceeding a set threshold, or due to low temperature differential between solar field and storage tank, is introduced as an on−off control. The implemented code is applied to a... [more]

Keywords: diesel engine, empirical mode decomposition, fault diagnosis, kernel-based fuzzy c-means clustering, variational mode decomposition
Accurate and timely fault diagnosis for the diesel engine is crucial to guarantee it works safely and reliably, and reduces the maintenance costs. A novel diagnosis method based on variational mode decomposition (VMD) and kernel-based fuzzy c-means clustering (KFCM) is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the VMD algorithm is optimized to select the most suitable K value adaptively. Then KFCM is employed to classify the feature parameters of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). Through the comparison of many different parameters, the singular value is selected finally because of the good classification effect. In this paper, the diesel engine fault simulation experiment was carried out to simulate various faults including valve clearance fault, fuel supply fault and common rail pressure fault. Each kind of machine fault varies in different degrees. To prove the effectiveness of VMD-KFCM, the proposed method is compared with empirical mode decomposition (EMD)-KFCM, ensemble empirical mode decom... [more]

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: air–fuel ratio, combustion control, dynamic matrix control, power plant control
This paper proposes a supplementary control for tighter control of the air−fuel ratio (AFR), which directly affects the environmental emissions of thermal power plants. Dynamic matrix control (DMC) is applied to the supplementary control of the existing combustion control loops and the conventional double cross limiting algorithm for combustion safety is formulated as constraints in the proposed DMC. The proposed supplementary control is simulated for a 600-MW drum-type power plant and 1000 MW ultra-supercritical once-through boiler power plant. The results show the tight control of the AFR in both types of thermal power plants to reduce environmental emissions.
A Step Up/Down Power-Factor-Correction Converter with Modified Dual Loop Control

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: AC/DC converter, bridgeless, power factor correction, zero-voltage switching (ZVS)
A step up/down AC/DC converter with modified dual loop control is proposed. The step up/down AC/DC converter features the bridgeless characteristic which can reduce bridge-diode conduction losses. Based on the step up/down AC/DC converter, a modified dual loop control scheme is proposed to achieve input current shaping and output voltage regulation. Fewer components are needed compared with the traditional bridge and bridgeless step up/down AC/DC converters. In addition, the intermediate capacitor voltage stress can be reduced. Furthermore, the top and bottom switches still have zero-voltage turn-on function during the negative and positive half-line cycle, respectively. Hence, the thermal stresses can also be reduced and balanced. Simulation and experimental results are provided to verify the validity of the proposed step up/down AC/DC converter and its control scheme.

Keywords: distributed energy resources, electric power grids, phasor-based control, renewable power integration, synchrophasors
We propose an innovative framework termed phasor-based control (PBC) to facilitate the integration of heterogeneous and intermittent distributed energy resources (DER) on the electric grid. PBC presents a unified approach that is agnostic to optimization criteria and to the particular characteristics of participating resources. It is enabled by synchronized, high-precision voltage phasor measurements that allow stating control objectives in grid-specific, rather than resource-specific, terms. We present qualitative justification and examine the general feasibility of this control approach, including the behavior of candidate control algorithms in simulation. Initial results suggest that PBC has significant potential to support stable and resilient grid operations in the presence of arbitrarily high penetrations of DER.

Keywords: chattering phenomenon, fast terminal sliding mode control, permanent magnet in-wheel motor, torque load observer
A fast terminal sliding mode control is proposed in this paper for improving the dynamic performance and robustness of a permanent magnet in-wheel motor system driven by a voltage source inverter. Firstly, a fast terminal sliding mode approaching law was designed to accelerate the approaching rate of the control system. Then, a torque load observer was designed to compensate for disturbances and uncertainties. Finally, fuzzy rules were designed to suppress the chattering phenomenon. Simulation and experimental results demonstrated that the fast terminal sliding mode control strategy presented better response speed than the conventional sliding mode control strategy. It had better dynamic performance and anti-interference and effectively reduced the chattering phenomenon in the control process.

Keywords: drive-shaft torsion, nonlinear economic-model predictive control, tower fatigue, variable-speed wind turbine
With the gradual increase in the installed capacity of wind turbines, more and more attention has been paid to the economy of wind power. Economic model-predictive control (EMPC) has been developed as an effective advanced control strategy, which can improve the dynamic economy performance of the system. However, the variable-speed wind turbine (VSWT) system widely used is generally nonlinear and highly coupled nonaffine systems, containing multiple economic terms. Therefore, a nonlinear EMPC strategy considering power maximization and mechanical load minimization is proposed based on the comprehensive VSWT model, including the dynamics of the tower and the gearbox in this paper. Three groups of simulations verify the effectiveness and reliability/practicability of the proposed nonlinear EMPC strategy.
