Jan Fořt, Jan Kočí, Jaroslav Pokorný, Robert Černý
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: computational modeling, moisture moderation, plaster, relative humidity, superabsorbent polymer
Moisture loads in building interiors are accompanied by a deterioration of the indoor air quality. Such a phenomenon may induce serious health risks for building inhabitants as well as degradation of furnishing. Unfortunately, the employment of additional heat, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) devices does not comply with the sustainability principle due to increased energy consumption, thus cannot be viewed as an efficient solution. This study deals with the use of superabsorbent polymers (SAP) in cement-lime plasters, thus extends the current state of knowledge and outlines further possible development of novel moisture responsive plasters since lightweight aggregates do not provide the desired performance. To be specific, this paper contemplates the experimental analysis of novel plasters modified by 0.5, 1 and 1.5 wt. % of SAP to obtain input parameters for computational modeling. Based on the obtained outputs, the incorporation of SAP admixture resulted in a substantial inc... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cloud-based artificial intelligence, cooling season power factor (CSPF), energy efficiency ratio (EER), fuzzy + proportional-integral-differential (PID), model-based predictive control (MPC), split-type air conditioner
This study developed cloud-based artificial intelligence (AI) that could run AI programs in the cloud and control air conditioners remotely from home. AI programs in the cloud can be altered any time to provide good control performances without altering the control hardware. The air conditioner costs and prices can thus be reduced by the increasing energy efficiency. Cloud control increased energy efficiency through AI control based on two conditions: (1) a constant indoor cooling rate and (2) a fixed stable range of indoor temperature control. However, if the two conditions cannot be guaranteed or the cloud signals are lost, the original proportional-integral-differential (PID) control equipped in the air conditioner can be used to ensure that the air conditioner works stably. The split-type air conditioner tested in this study is ranked eighth among 1177 air conditioners sold in Taiwan according to public data. It has extremely high energy efficiency, and using AI to increase its ene... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: circulating current, linear matrix inequality (LMI), modular multilevel converter (MMC), multi-input system, tracking control
Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) play an important role in the power electronics industry due to their many advantages such as modularity and reliability. However, one of the challenges is to suppress fluctuations of circulating current and capacitor voltage and to ensure the quality of the output current. In this paper, the upper and lower arm voltages are employed as control inputs to control the output current and circulating current which are fed back to track the desired value. Based on linear matrix inequality (LMI), the control law of the MMC with multi-input system is designed to optimize the control value. The optimum arm voltage is divided by the SM nominal capacitor voltage to determine the number of SMs inserted into the upper/lower arm. The Voltage Sorting Algorithm (VSA) is then used to suppress the capacitor voltage fluctuation. The proposed tracking control strategy is implemented in MATLAB/Simulink. The results show that even under a small number of SMs (4 per arm)... [more]

Keywords: co-simulation, control and operation, design optimization, multi-carrier energy systems
Innovations in today’s energy grids are mainly driven by the need to reduce carbon emissions and the necessary integration of decentralized renewable energy sources. In this context, a transition towards hybrid distribution systems, which effectively couple thermal and electrical networks, promises to exploit hitherto unused synergies for increasing efficiency and flexibility. However, this transition poses practical challenges, starting already in the design phase where established design optimization approaches struggle to capture the technical details of control and operation of such systems. This work addresses these obstacles by introducing a design approach that enables the analysis and optimization of hybrid thermal-electrical distribution systems with explicit consideration of control. Based on a set of key prerequisites and modeling requirements, co-simulation is identified as the most appropriate method to facilitate the detailed analysis of such systems. Furthermore, a metho... Giuseppe Fusco, Mario Russo
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active distributed generation, control system stability, decentralized control, droop control, interaction measure, MIMO modeling, voltage/reactive power control
In modern distribution systems, the presence of an increasing amount of Distributed Generation (DG) systems causes over-/under-voltage problems, due to the reverse power flows. To face these problems, the voltage-reactive power droop controllers of DG systems are commonly used for their simplicity and are required by international standards. On the other hand, the interaction among voltage droop controllers of different DG systems may introduce instability. The paper presents an effective procedure to determine the droop constants of voltage-reactive power controllers for multiple DG systems. Firstly, a multi-input multi-output model of the distribution system is introduced. Then, using the concept of the interaction measure under decentralized control, a simple constraint is added to the single-input single-output design of each droop controller. Such a constraint guarantees stability with respect to the interaction among the voltage droop controllers of all the DG systems. Eventually... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: grey wolf optimizer, grid-tied inverter, LCL filter, passive damping, PR controllers
This paper proposes a new method for the simultaneous determination of the optimal control parameters of proportional resonant controllers and the optimal design of the output filter of a grid-tied three-phase inverter. The proposed method, based on the grey wolf optimization (GWO) algorithm, addresses both optimization problems as a single process to achieve a better system frequency response. It optimizes the unknown parameters by using a fitness function to find the best trade-off between the following fundamental terms: the harmonic attenuation rate; the power loss, through the damping resistor; and the current tracking error in the stationary frame, ensuring the system and grid stability. To validate the proposed optimization methodology, two case studies are considered with different output filter topologies with passive damping methods. The results obtained from the proposed optimization procedure were analyzed and discussed according to the fitness function terms.

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adaptive control, control strategy, hybrid electric bulldozer, power smoothing, tracked vehicle
The series hybrid electric powertrain is the main architecture of the hybrid electric tracked vehicle. For a series tracked hybrid electric bulldozer (HEB), frequent fluctuations of the engine working points, deviation of the genset working points from the pre-set target trajectory due to an insufficient response, or interference of the hydraulic pump consumed torque, will all result in increased fuel consumption. To solve the three problems of fuel economy, an adaptive smooth power following (ASPF) control strategy based on an optimal efficiency map is proposed. The strategy combines a fuzzy adaptive filter algorithm with a genset’s optimal efficiency, which can adaptively smooth the working points of the genset and search the trajectory for the genset’s best efficiency when the hydraulic pump torque is involved. In this study, the proposed strategy was compared on the established HEB hardware in loop (HIL) platform with two other strategies: a power following strategy in a preliminar... [more]

Keywords: embedded length, resin rock bolt support, rock bolt pattern, room and pillar method with mined roof bending, work of rock bolt support
The article presents methods of making the rock bolt support more yieldable, especially for a stratified roof. Alongside the increasing depth of exploitation of raw material deposits, rock bolt support units are more often designed taking into account more intensive deformations and displacements of underground excavations. In the article, a room and pillar method with mined roof bending and roof reinforcement with bolt patterns of 1 m × 1 m, 1.5 m × 1.5 m and 2 m × 2 m is presented. Moreover, the laboratory tests included 1.8 m long bolts, which were embedded segmentally on the lengths of 100 mm, 150 mm and 200 mm were tested. Based on the load−displacement characteristics, the deformation energy for flat and profiled dome bearing plates was calculated. Making the segmentally embedded resin rock bolt support yieldable enabled it to perform additional work. Furthermore, it was found that rock bolt support with a dome bearing plate took over 2.5 times more energy compared to a rock bolt... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: demand response, frequency regulation, hardware in the loop (HIL), small-signal analysis, variable speed heat pump (VSHP), virtual inertia
The growth in the integration of converter interfaced renewable energy has reduced the system inertia, which threatens system stability due to high rate of change of frequency (RoCoF) and frequency nadir issues unless steps are taken to mitigate it. There is a need to provide sufficient fast frequency response to maintain adequate inertia in the system. This paper investigates the capabilities of a variable speed heat pump to provide an emulated inertial response. This paper presents a virtual synchronous machine control for a variable speed heat pump that provides support for grid frequency regulation over the inertial response time frame. A small-signal model with the transfer function of the variable speed heat pump is developed to analyse the effectiveness and feasibility of providing virtual inertia at the device and grid level, respectively. Furthermore, the small-signal model is validated using hardware in the loop simulation. Finally, the aggregated frequency response and virtu... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: effective induction heating, Energy Conversion, energy matching, inductive power transmission, resonance inverter
Induction heating is one of the most effective methods of energy conversion from the electrical to thermal form, used in diverse industrial processes. In this paper the resonance generators for induction heating are considered for which the equivalent load resistance has a strong impact on the ability of the system to use optimally the potentially available power. The equivalent load resistance varies, depending on the type of induction heating system (IHS) and during the heating process itself. This paper presents an induction heat generator in which an L-LC resonance system (called the LLC system) plays an active role in energy matching. The LLC resonance system is analyzed from the point of view of both the functional dependencies describing the influence of frequency on the load resistance transformation, and the impact of the LLC setup on the sensitivity of the generator to changes in the charge resistance caused by heating. The procedure for initial selection of the resonance sys... [more]

Keywords: DC transformer, electric vehicle, extreme fast charging, silicon carbide
Considering the fact that electric vehicle battery charging based on the current charging station is time-consuming, the charging technology needs to improve in order to increase charging speed, which could reduce range anxiety and benefit the user experience of electric vehicle (EV). For this reason, a 1 MW battery charging station is presented in this paper to eliminate the drawbacks of utilizing the normal 480 VAC as the system input to supply the 1 MW power, such as the low power density caused by the large volume of the 60 Hz transformer and the low efficiency caused by the high current. The proposed system utilizes the grid input of single-phase 8 kVAC and is capable of charging two electric vehicles with 500 kW each, at the same time. Therefore, this paper details how high-voltage SiC power modules are the key enabler technology, as well as the selection of a resonant-type input-series, output-parallel circuitry candidate to secure high power density and efficiency, while intell... March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: AIC, Interval Type-2 TSK fuzzy logic controller, MPPT
The major drawback of photovoltaic (PV) systems is their dependence on environmental conditions, such as solar radiation and temperature. Because of this dependency, maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control methods are used in PV systems in order to extract maximum power from the PV panels. This study proposes a controller with a hybrid structure based on angle of incremental conductance (AIC) method and Interval Type-2 Takagi Sugeno Kang fuzzy logic controller (IT2-TSK-FLC) for MPPT. MPPT performance of proposed hybrid controller is evaluated via detailed simulation studies and dSPACE-based experimental study. The results validate that the proposed hybrid controller offers fast-tracking speed, high stability, and robust performance against uncertainties arising from disturbance to inputs of the PV system.

Keywords: discrete-time power system, DoS attacks, event-triggered control mechanism (ETM), load frequency control (LFC), virtual synchronous generation (VSG)
This paper is concerned with resilient triggered control problem for load frequency control and virtual synchronous generation (LFC-VSG) scheme of discrete-time multi-area power system with parameter uncertainty, governor dead band (GDB), and low inertia under time delay and aperiodic Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks. To reduce communication load of sleep intervals, event triggered mechanism (ETM) is introduced. A discrete-time switched delay system model is established to describe the dynamic of multi-area power system under resilient static output feedback control law. Combining piecewise Lyapunov−Krasovskii functional (LKF) method with switched system theory, a criterion is derived that the tolerant bound of attack duration and attack frequency can be estimated explicitly. Meanwhile, some sufficient conditions are obtained which can preserve weighted H ∞ performance. By using linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) techniques, a co-design method is proposed to solve the control gai... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bypass, energy savings, HRVS, residential buildings, room control
This study makes a novel attempt to analyse the effect of the bypass control and room control modes on ventilation energy saving in an 84 m2 housing unit, which is the most frequently constructed unit-type among newly constructed apartment buildings in Korea. A heat recovery ventilation system was installed. The fan power consumption was measured via field experiments and analyses were made for potential energy savings. Experiments to confirm the power-saving effect owing to the application of the room control mode were performed under the heat recovery and bypass modes, using three air flow rates (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 ACH). Additionally, the annual energy saving based on the application of the mixed mode (both bypass and room control modes) was calculated. The results obtained showed that when the mixed mode was employed, ventilation energy saving up to 10.76%−16.56%, which is greater than that obtained using only the heat recovery mode, was realized. Additionally, compared with all-room-... [more]

Keywords: event-based consensus, hierarchical event-based control, hierarchical leader–follower network, layer-to-layer delays
Compared with the traditional multi-agent models, the hierarchical leader−follower network (HLFN) can describe some real-world multi-agent systems more precisely due to its layered properties. The distributed event-based consensus control problem of HLFNs with layer-to-layer delays, namely, communication delays among agents of different layers, is presented in this essay. In order to solve the aforementioned problem, several innovative hierarchical event-based control (HEC) algorithms are proposed. The sufficient conditions on the control parameters and event-triggered mechanism were derived to undertake the reliability of the closed-loop dynamics. Moreover, it is shown that the zeno-behaviors of the presented HEC algorithms can be excluded. Finally, there are some numerical examples that verify the availability of the results.

Keywords: ancillary services, grid integration, HVDC transmission, offshore wind, synthetic inertia, wind energy, wind farm control
In this paper, a novel concept to integrate High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC)-connected offshore wind power plants with the onshore grid is presented. The concept makes use of a holistic wind farm controller along with a fully instrumented conventional synchronous generator at the point of common coupling. In our approach, the wind farm is able to replicate the natural response of the generator to a system, even enabling the wind farm to reproduce, in a scaled up manner, a range of ancillary services without having to rely on indirect frequency measurements which are prone to noise and delays. Simulation results are presented to validate the proposed solution.

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: coal mill, data-driven, dynamic model, fault diagnosis, fault simulation
Monitoring and diagnosis of coal mill systems are critical to the security operation of power plants. The traditional data-driven fault diagnosis methods often result in low fault recognition rate or even misjudgment due to the imbalance between fault data samples and normal data samples. In order to obtain massive fault sample data effectively, based on the analysis of primary air system, grinding mechanism and energy conversion process, a dynamic model of the coal mill system which can be used for fault simulation is established. Then, according to the mechanism of various faults, three types of faults (i.e., coal interruption, coal blockage and coal self-ignition) are simulated through the modification of model parameters. The simulation shows that the dynamic characteristic of the model is consistent with the actual object, the relative error of each output variable is less than 2.53%, and the total average relative error of all outputs is about 1.2%. The model has enough accuracy... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy-based representation, Fault Detection, fault diagnosis, transcritical heat pump
The objective of this paper is to describe an energy-based approach to visualize, identify, and monitor faults that may occur in a water-to-water transcritical CO 2 heat pump system. A representation using energy attributes allows the abstraction of all physical phenomena present during operation into a compact and easily interpretable form. The use of a linear graph representation, with heat pump components represented as nodes and energy interactions as links, is investigated. Node signature matrices are used to present the energy information in a compact mathematical form. The resulting node signature matrix is referred to as an attributed graph and is populated in such a way as to retain the structural information, i.e., where the attribute points to in the physical system. To generate the energy and exergy information for the compilation of the attributed graphs, a descriptive thermal−fluid model of the heat pump system is developed. The thermal−fluid model is based on the... [more]

Keywords: chemical looping, generalized predictive control (GPC), NARMA model, wavelets
Chemical looping is a near-zero emission process for generating power from coal. It is based on a multi-phase gas-solid flow and has extremely challenging nonlinear, multi-scale dynamics with jumps, producing large dynamic model uncertainty, which renders traditional robust control techniques, such as linear parameter varying H ∞ design, largely inapplicable. This process complexity is addressed in the present work through the temporal and the spatiotemporal multiresolution modeling along with the corresponding model-based control laws. Namely, the nonlinear autoregressive with exogenous input model structure, nonlinear in the wavelet basis, but linear in parameters, is used to identify the dominant temporal chemical looping process dynamics. The control inputs and the wavelet model parameters are calculated by optimizing a quadratic cost function using a gradient descent method. The respective identification and tracking error convergence of the proposed self-tuning identifi... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hybrid active disturbance rejection control, power plant simulator, single-loop control strategy, superheated steam temperature, tuning procedure
Superheated steam temperature (SST) is a significant index for a coal-fired power plant. Its control is becoming more and more challenging for the reason that the control requirements are stricter and the load command changes extensively and frequently. To deal with the aforementioned challenges, previously the cascade control strategy was usually applied to the control of SST. However, its structure and tuning procedure are complex. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a single-loop control strategy for SST based on a hybrid active disturbance rejection control (ADRC). The stability and ability to reject the secondary disturbance are analyzed theoretically in order to perfect the theory of the hybrid ADRC. Then a tuning procedure is summarized for the hybrid ADRC by analyzing the influences of all parameters on control performance. Using the proposed tuning method, a simulation is carried out illustrating that the hybrid ADRC is able to improve the dynamic performance of SST wit... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fire hazard, mine ventilation network, reversal ventilation, underground fires
Reversal ventilation is one of prevention methods against fire hazard in underground mines, but it is not recommended for the mines where methane is present. The authors introduce the new method of reversal and by conducting numerical simulations they prove that it allows to keep methane at the acceptable level during miners escape. However, it requires connection between the subnetworks of the main ventilation fans. It was also shown, that by using the method some escape routes will be shortened. It is possible to apply this method in the mines where the fans and stoppings are fully controlled across the full range of their operating parameters. The findings are important for underground mines, as well as for surface facilities where air control or smoke control is managed by two or more fans.

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fast exponential power reaching law, harmonic current compensation, LCLCL filter, plugin-repetitive sliding mode control (RCSMC), repetitive control (RC), SAPF, sliding mode control (SMC)
This paper proposes a novel sliding mode control (SMC) scheme with a repetitive sliding surface for shunt active power filters (SAPF) to enhance the system robustness and eliminate harmonic current tracking errors. Traditional control schemes, such as PI control, repetitive control (RC), proportional resonance control (PR), improve the stability of the SAPF in the stable grid to a certain extent. However, the robustness of the SAPF control system has not been improved. In this paper, the SMC is applied to SAPF, and a sliding mode controller is constructed by using a linear sliding mode surface composed of the system state variables and a fast exponential power-reaching law, which can effectively enhance the system robustness. When the grid parameters change or external disturbances exist, sliding surface drift and sliding mode chattering will occur. Although fast-tracking of the harmonic current can still be achieved, it is difficult to accurately compensate AC harmonic current. Moreov... [more]

Keywords: continuous current mode (CCM), high-power LED lighting, IGBT, interleaved converters, power factor correction (PFC), ripple analysis, three-phase boost converter
In this article, a three-leg interleaved boost Power Factor Corrector (IBPFC) converter for energy-efficient LED lighting systems connected to the main grid was discussed. This IBPFC circuit presented features 60 kHz of commutation frequency and up to 3 kW of power rating. The controlled rectifier front-end boost PFC supplied a DC/DC converter to drive power LEDs suitable for street lighting or a lighting system for a stadium, etc. The IBPFC operated in continuous current mode (CCM). The ripple impact of the IBPFC converter was analyzed and a novel methodology of inductance design was presented. In the proposed design approach, the derivative calculation of the current ripple peak compared with the derivative of the input current was used to define a critical inductance value to ensure the CCM condition. Experimental validation was provided on a 3kW prototype.

Keywords: energy savings, lighting, optimal control, performance evaluation, sustainable tunneling, threshold zone luminance, tunnel lighting, tunnel management
Because of the absence of lighting calculation tools at the initial stage of tunnel design, the lighting systems are usually over-dimensioned, leading to over illumination and increased energy consumption. For this reason, a fine-tuning method for switching lighting stages according to the traffic weighted L20 luminance is proposed at no additional cost. The method was applied in a real −case scenario, where L20 luminance of the access zone at eleven (11) existing tunnels was calculated. The traffic weighted method of CR14380 was used in order to calculate the actual luminance levels for the entrance zone. The new transition zone, which decreases luminance curves, was produced and compared with the existing ones. Thus, a new switching control was proposed and programed for the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system of the tunnel. The signals of the corresponding eleven L20 meters for a period of eight days were used and the corresponding annual energy consumptions were... [more]
