Linear Active Disturbance Rejection Control for DC Bus Voltage Under Low-Voltage Ride-Through at the Grid-Side of Energy Storage System
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: energy storage grid-connected inverter, linear active disturbance rejection control, linear extended state observer, observation accuracy, proportional differential
The energy storage inverter system has the characteristics of nonlinearity, strong coupling, variable parameters, and flexible mode switching between parallel and off grid. In order to improve the control performance of the grid-side inverter of the energy storage system, an improved Linear Active Disturbance Rejection Control (LADRC) based on proportional differentiation is proposed to replace the traditional LADRC in the voltage outer loop control. In this paper, the observation gain coefficient of the sum of the disturbances of the traditional Linear Extended State Observer (LESO) is improved to a proportional differentiation link, which effectively reduces the degree of the disturbance observation amplitude drop and the phase lag, and increases the observation bandwidth of LESO. Compared with traditional LADRC, it not only improves the observation accuracy of LESO for disturbance, but also improves the anti-interference performance of LADRC. Finally, the control effects of improved... [more]

A New Approach for Fault Detection, Location and Diagnosis by Ultrasonic Testing
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fault detection and diagnosis, guided waves, non-destructive tests, wavelet transforms, wind turbine blade
Wind turbine blades are constantly submitted to different types of particles such as dirt, ice, etc., as well as all the different environmental parameters that affect the behaviour and efficiency of the energy generation system. These parameters can cause faults to the wind turbine blades, modifying their behaviour due, for example, to the turbulence. A new method is presented in this paper based on cross-correlations to determine the presence of delamination in the blades. The experiments were conducted in two real wind turbine blades to analyse the fault and non-fault blades using ultrasonic guided waves. Finally, the energy analysis of the signal based on wavelet transforms allowed to determine energies abrupt changes in the correlation of the signals and to locate the faults.

Impacts of a LVRT Control Strategy of Offshore Wind Farms on the HTS Power Cable
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: HTS power cable, low voltage ride through, LVRT control, offshore wind farm
High temperature superconducting (HTS) power cables are a potential solution for the grid integration of offshore wind farms since the HTS cable can conduct bulk wind power at low voltage levels. However, the transient current through the HTS cable in cases of low voltage ride through (LVRT) operation has a negative impact on the HTS cable operation due to the quenching phenomenon. This paper analyzes the impact of LVRT control strategies on the HTS cable operation. In addition, a coordinated control of wind turbines for LVRT improvement of an offshore wind farm is proposed. The feasibility of the HTS cable application for the grid connection of offshore wind farms is also discussed in this study. The proposed controller is designed for the wind turbine generator based on a type-4 permanent magnet synchronous generator. In the proposed controller, the transient current through the HTS cable is reduced by regulating the machine side power during fault conditions. The feasibility of the... [more]

Model Predictive Base Direct Speed Control of Induction Motor Drive—Continuous and Finite Set Approaches
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: continuous set, finite set, induction motor drive, Model Predictive Control
In the paper a comparative study of the two control structures based on MPC (Model Predictive Control) for an electrical drive system with an induction motor are presented. As opposed to the classical approach, in which DFOC (Direct Field Oriented Control) with four controllers is considered, in the current study only one MPC controller is utilized. The proposed control structures have a cascade free structure that consists of a vector of electromagnetic (torque, flux) and mechanical (speed) states of the system. The first investigated framework is based on the finite-set MPC. A short horizon predictive window is selected. The continuous set MPC is used in the second framework. In this case the predictive horizon contains several samples. The computational complexity of the algorithm is reduced by applying its explicit version. Different implementation aspects of both MPC structures, for instance the model used in prediction, complexity of the control algorithms, and their properties t... [more]

Hybrid Control Strategy of MPC and DBC to Achieve a Fixed Frequency and Superior Robustness
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fast transient time, fixed switching frequency, predictive control, robustness
In this paper, a hybrid control strategy for power converters, based on improved deadbeat control (DBC) and improved finite control set model predictive control (MPC), is proposed. The presented control strategy employs a switched method to achieve a fixed switching frequency while maintaining a fast transient time. Moreover, the proposal incorporates error correction to achieve superior robustness. A prototype of a single-phase voltage source rectifier is established to verify the performance of the proposal. The comparative results with conventional MPC are given and illustrate the merits of the proposed control method.

Machine Learning for Benchmarking Models of Heating Energy Demand of Houses in Northern Canada
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: benchmarking models, building automation and control system, linear regression, Machine Learning, measurements, Northern houses, ongoing commissioning
In most cases, the benchmarking models of energy use in houses are developed based on current and past data, and they continue to be used without any update. This paper proposes the method of retraining of benchmarking models by applying machine learning techniques when new measurements are made available. The method uses as a case study the measurements of heating energy demand from two semi-detached houses of Northern Canada. The results of the prediction of heating energy demand using static or augmented window techniques are compared with measurements. The daily energy signature is used as a benchmarking model due to its simplicity and performance. However, the proposed retraining method can be applied to any form of benchmarking model. The method should be applied in all possible situations, and be an integral part of intelligent building automation and control systems (BACS) for the ongoing commissioning for building energy-related applications.

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: electric pump, engine thermal management, fuel economy, Model Predictive Control, spark-ignition engine
Improvements in internal combustion engine efficiency can be achieved with proper thermal management. In this work, a simulation tool for the preliminary analysis of the engine cooling control is developed and a model-based controller, which enforces the coolant flow rate by means of an electrically driven pump is presented. The controller optimizes the coolant flow rate under each engine operating condition to guarantee that the engine temperatures and the coolant boiling levels are kept inside prescribed constraints, which guarantees efficient and safe engine operation. The methodology is validated at the experimental test rig. Several control strategies are analyzed during a standard homologation cycle and a comparison of the proposed methodology and the adoption of the standard belt-driven pump is provided. The results show that, according to the control strategy requirements, a fuel consumption reduction of up to about 8% with respect to the traditional cooling system can be achie... [more]

Assessment Indexes for Converter P-Q Control Coupling
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active and reactive power control, performance evaluation, power coupling, power distribution lines, power electronics converters, power generation control
This work presents a concise methodology for the calculation of assessment indexes regarding the coupling between active and reactive power control observed on distribution level converters. First, the reader is introduced to the concept of power coupling; when, where and how it appears in power control of converters. A brief summary of the theory and formulation behind it is also included, together with relevant literature. Then, the methodology for the assessment of active and reactive power control performance of any grid-connected converter is presented. The impact of small control disturbances during a testing procedure is monitored, analyzed and converted to meaningful indexes, so that the type and level of coupling is quantified without putting the converter or the grid at risk. The efficiency of the methodology to assess the type and level of coupling is verified experimentally. This is done by assessing several power control approaches with different level of decoupling effici... [more]

Non-Contact Measurement and Analysis of Trapped Charge Decay Rates for Cable Line Switching Transients
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: cable, field mill, overvoltage, sheath voltage limiter, SVL, transient, trapped charge
During reclosure of 275 kV cable circuits used for voltage control, excessive overvoltages were observed on the network. Such events cause onerous and costly failures. Transient simulations have shown that the normal voltage on its own cannot generate such excessive switching overvoltages. Initial investigations by the network operator pointed towards trapped charge on the unearthed as the cause of the failures. Measurement of these trapped charge voltages and their slow decay without interfering with the charge has, to the author’s knowledge, not been done before in an operational substation. This work introduces a technique to measure trapped charge at a 275 kV substation using the Electrostatic Field Mill. Since the electric field is a proxy measurement of surface voltage, field mills can also be used to measure voltage. In this paper, an on-site substation measurement setup using an electrostatic field mill has been developed for the non-contact measurement of trapped charge voltag... [more]

PD Plus Dynamic Pressure Feedback Control for a Direct Drive Stewart Manipulator
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: direct drive, dynamic pressure feedback, energy saving, modal space, PD control, Stewart manipulator, vector control
In order to ensure good dynamic characteristics, servo valve is usually adopted as the drive part of Stewart manipulator which causes huge power consumption, while direct drive electro-hydraulic servo system has the advantages of energy saving, simple structure, convenient installation, and low failure rate. But its dynamic characteristics are so poor that it can only be applied to occasions where quick response is not needed. On the consideration above, following works are done in this paper. Since current coupling exists in the control system based on the speed of the servo motor as the control input, the control system of the direct drive Stewart manipulator is established based on the current of the servo motor as the control input in which the current coupling can be solved. In order to improve the dynamic characteristics of the direct drive Stewart manipulator, a Proportion Differentiation (PD) plus dynamic pressure feedback control strategy is also put forward in this paper, whi... Temporary Fault Ride-Through Method in Power Distribution Systems with Distributed Generations Based on PCS
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: distribution generation, fault restoration, inrush current control, temporary fault ride-through, voltage control
The current practice of Distributed Generation (DG) disconnection for every fault in distribution systems has an adverse effect on utility and stable power trading when the penetration level of DGs is high. That is, in the process of fault detecting and Circuit Breaker (CB) reclosing when a temporary fault occurs, DGs should be disconnected from the Point of Common Coupling (PCC) before CB reclosing. Then all DGs should wait at least 5 minutes after restoration for reconnection and cannot supply the pre-bid power in power market during that period. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a control method that can keep operating without disconnection of DG. This control method is verified through modeling and simulation by the PSCAD/EMTDC software package for distribution systems with DGs based on PCS (Power Conditioning Systems) and CB reclosing protection.

A Parallel Estimation System of Stator Resistance and Rotor Speed for Active Disturbance Rejection Control of Six-Phase Induction Motor
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active disturbance rejection controller (ADRC), direct torque control (DTC), full-order observer, sensorless, six-phase induction motor (6PIM), stator resistance estimator
In this paper, a parallel estimation system of the stator resistance and the rotor speed is proposed in speed sensorless six-phase induction motor (6PIM) drive. First, a full-order observer is presented to provide the stator current and the rotor flux. Then, an adaptive control law is designed using the Lyapunov stability theorem to estimate the rotor speed. In parallel, a stator resistance identification scheme is proposed using more degrees of freedom of the 6PIM, which is also based on the Lyapunov stability theorem. The main advantage of the proposed method is that the stator resistance adaptation is completely decoupled from the rotor speed estimation algorithm. To increase the robustness of the drive system against external disturbances, noises, and parameter uncertainties, an active disturbance rejection controller (ADRC) is introduced in direct torque control (DTC) of the 6PIM. The experimental results clarify the effectiveness of the proposed approaches.

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: decentralized control, input voltage sharing, input-series-output-parallel converter, output current sharing
Input-Series-Output-Parallel (ISOP) converters, a kind of modular converter, are used in high-input voltage and high-output current applications. In ISOP converters, Input Voltage Sharing (IVS) and Output Current Sharing (OCS) should be implemented for stable operation. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes a decentralized control method. In the proposed control, output current reference is changed according to the decentralized control characteristic in individual current control loops. In this way, the proposed control method is able to implement IVS and OCS without communication. Also, this method can be easily used in current control loops and has high reliability compared to conventional control methods that require communication. In this paper, the operation principle is described to elucidate the proposed control and a small signal model of an ISOP converter is also implemented. Based on the small signal model, IVS stability analysis is performed using pole-zero ma... [more]

A High-Gain Observer-Based Adaptive Super-Twisting Algorithm for DC-Link Voltage Control of NPC Converters
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adaptive super-twisting algorithm, high-gain observer, three-level NPC converter
Acting as an interface between the grid and many energy systems, the active front-end (AFE) has been widely used in a large variety of industrial applications. In this paper, in order to ensure the fast dynamic performance and good disturbance rejection ability of the AFE, a high-gain observer (HGO) plus adaptive super-twisting algorithm (STA) for the three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) converter is proposed. Comparing with the conventional PI control strategy, the proposed controller implements the adaptive STA in the voltage regulator to provide a faster transient response. The gains of the adaptive STA keep varying according to the rules being reduced in steady state but increasing in transient conditions. Therefore, the chattering phenomenon is mitigated and the dynamic response is guaranteed. Additionally, to undermine the impact of external disturbances on the dc-link voltage, a high-efficiency HGO is designed in the voltage regulation loop to reject it. Experimental results... [more]

Investigation of Ash Deposition Dynamic Process in an Industrial Biomass CFB Boiler Burning High-Alkali and Low-Chlorine Fuel
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: alkali metal, biomass industrial boiler, circulating fluidized bed, deposit
The circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler is a mainstream technology of biomass combustion generation in China. The high flue gas flow rate and relatively low combustion temperature of CFB make the deposition process different from that of a grate furnace. The dynamic deposition process of biomass ash needs further research, especially in industrial CFB boilers. In this study, a temperature-controlled ash deposit probe was used to sample the deposits in a 12 MW CFB boiler. Through the analysis of multiple deposit samples with different deposition times, the changes in micromorphology and chemical composition of the deposits in each deposition stage can be observed more distinctively. The initial deposits mainly consist of particles smaller than 2 μm, caused by thermophoretic deposition. The second stage is the condensation of alkali metal. Different from the condensation of KCl reported by most previous literatures, KOH is found in deposits in place of KCl. Then, it reacts with SO2, O... [more]

Effect of Flexible Flaps on Lift and Drag of Laminar Profile Flow
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: flexible flaps, separation control, stall delay
Experiments with elastic flaps applied on a common airfoil profile were performed to investigate positive effects on lift and drag coefficients. An NACA0020 profile was mounted on a force balance and placed in a wind tunnel. Elastic flaps were attached in rows at different positions on the upper profile surface. The Reynolds number of the flow based on the chord length of the profile is about 2 × 10 5 . The angle of attack is varied to identify the pre- and post-stall effects of the flaps. Polar diagrams are presented for different flap configurations to compare the effects of the flaps. The results showed that flaps generally increase the drag coefficient due to the additional skin friction and pressure drag. Furthermore, a significant increase of lift in the stall region was observed. The highest efficiency was obtained for the configuration with flaps at the leading and trailing edges of the profile. In this case, the critical angle was delayed and lift was increased in pre... [more]

Optimal Inertia Reserve and Inertia Control Strategy for Wind Farms
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active power control, frequency response, inertia control, wind farms
It is important to reduce the impact of the high penetration of wind power into the electricity supply for the purposes of the security and stability of the power grid. As such, the inertia capability of wind farms has become an observation index. The existing control modes cannot guarantee the wind turbine to respond to the frequency variation of the grid, hence, it may lead to frequency instability as the penetration of wind power gets much higher. For the stability of the power grid, a simple and applicable method is to realize inertia response by controlling wind farms based on a high-speed communication network. Thus, with the consideration of the inertia released by a wind turbine at its different operating points, the inertia control mechanism of a doubly-fed wind turbine is analyzed firstly in this paper. The optimal exit point of inertia control is discussed. Then, an active power control strategy for wind farms is proposed to reserve the maximum inertia under a given power ou... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: alternating iterative method, bipolar configuration, multi-terminal, universal power flow algorithm, VSC-HVDC
An effective and accurate power flow algorithm provides control references for active power dispatch and initial steady state operating points, used for stability analysis, short-circuit calculations, and electromagnetic transient simulations, which is not only a fundamental precondition to analyze the system operating conditions, but also the basis to improve the accuracy of power flow and DC voltage control of the multi-terminal voltage source converter-based high voltage direct current (VSC-HVDC). This paper proposes a nodal voltage-based universal steady-state power flow algorithm for the newly-developed bipolar multi-terminal VSC-HVDC (VSC-MTDC). Firstly, as the positive-pole and negative-pole DC network of the bipolar VSC-MTDC can be operated individually, a bipolar power flow alternating iterative method is proposed here to obtain the positive/negative-pole DC network power flow. Secondly, a series of nodal equivalent methods involving various control strategies are proposed for... [more]

Carrier-Phase-Shifted Rotation Pulse-Width-Modulation Scheme for Dynamic Active Power Balance of Modules in Cascaded H-Bridge STATCOMs
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active power balance, carrier rotation, carrier-phase-shifted, cascaded H-bridge, multilevel converter, static synchronous compensator
In the medium-voltage power distribution system, cascaded H-bridge (CHB) static synchronous compensators (STATCOMs) are widely utilized to solve power quality issues by injecting the controlled reactive current into the system. The carrier-phase-shifted (CPS) pulse-width-modulation (PWM) scheme is preferred for CHB-STATCOMs, because it can minimize the compensating current distortion and realize the relative active power balance among the H-bridge modules. This paper reveals the influence of the carrier phase difference on the module active power balance, and proposes a carrier rotation technique with a CPS-PWM scheme to address this drawback. The rotation rules were analyzed, and the rotation time was especially designed to enhance the robustness of the system. With the proposed method, the natural dynamic active power balance of each module could be achieved, and the capacitor voltage could maintain balance without the individual capacitor voltage control or the auxiliary circuits in... Safe and Secure Control of Swarms of Vehicles by Small-World Theory
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: autonomous vehicle, complex networks, platoon control, small world theory, swarm behavior
The present paper investigates a new paradigm to control a swarm of moving individual vehicles, based on the introduction of a few random long-range communications in a queue dominated by short-range car-following dynamics. The theoretical approach adapts the small-world theory, originally proposed in social sciences, to the investigation of these networks. It is shown that the controlled system exhibits properties of higher synchronization and robustness with respect to communication failures. The considered application to a vehicle swarm shows how safety and security of the related traffic dynamics are strongly increased, diminishing the collision probability even in the presence of a hacker attack to some connectivity channels.

Mercury (Hg) emissions from coal-fired power plants are of increasing concern around the world. In this study, field tests were carried out to understand the Hg emission characteristics and its migration behaviors in a commercial CFB boiler unit with the electricity generation capacity of 25 MW. This boiler is equipped with one electrostatic precipitator (ESP) and two fabric filters (FFs) in series for removing particulates from the flue gas. Impact of Phase Locked Loop with Different Types and Control Dynamics on Resonance of DFIG System
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: doubly fed induction generator, phase locked loop, phase margin, resonance
In recent years, the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) operates in a weak grid, rather than a strong grid due to the high proportion of wind energy into the power grid. The impedance interaction between the DFIG system and series and parallel compensated weak grid might cause the subsynchronous resonance (SSR) and high frequency resonance (HFR) in the DFIG system, respectively. Phase locked loop (PLL) is a popular grid synchronization technique, and the high bandwidth PLL can cause resonance at middle frequencies in the DFIG system. However, the impact of PLL types and their controller dynamics on the resonance in the DFIG system are not adequately researched. The impact of the PLL controller with different types, such as synchronous reference frame (SRF) and Lead/Lag PLL, is studied in this paper to fill this gap. Additionally, an improved PLL is proposed, which can guarantee the high phase margin and decrease the likelihood of the resonance at middle frequencies in the DFIG syste... [more]

Design of a Low-Order Harmonic Disturbance Observer with Application to a DC Motor Position Control

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: DC motor, harmonic disturbance, low-order disturbance observer, output information, performance recovery
Among various tools implemented to counteract undesired effects of time-varying uncertainties, disturbance observer (DOB)-based controller has gained wide popularity as a result of its flexibility and efficacy. In this paper, a low-order DOB that is capable of compensating for the effects of a biased harmonic disturbance, as well as plant uncertainties is presented. The proposed low-order DOB can asymptotically estimate a harmonic disturbance of known frequency but unknown amplitude and phase, by using measurable output variables. An analysis carried out by using the singular perturbation theory shows that the nominal performance of the system can be recovered from a real uncertain system when the observer gain is sufficiently large. The observer gains that result in the performance recovery of the real uncertain system are obtained from the stability condition of the boundary-layer system. Improvement in Voltage Gain of Interleaved High Step-Down Converter
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: energy-transferring capacitor, field-programmable gate array (FPGA), interleaved high step-down converter, voltage gain
An interleaved high step-down converter is presented herein, which utilized a diode-capacitor module so as to make the step-down voltage gain under the same duty cycle as well as the voltage stresses on switches and diodes relatively low as compared with the existing circuits. Also, under the same voltage gain, the proposed circuit had a relatively large duty cycle, making the elapsed time per cycle for the connection between the input and the output enlarged, and hence the controller was not interrupted by noises. This converter can be used in low-output-power high-output-current applications. In this study, the basic operating principles of the proposed converter were firstly described and analyzed, and finally, its effectiveness was demonstrated by experiment.
