A Prediction Method for Hydrocarbon Distribution Associated with Fault-Shale Caprock Configuration Leakages
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: fault-shale caprock configuration leakages, hydrocarbon distribution, oil and gas migration, prediction technique, shallow reservoirs
A prediction method of hydrocarbon distribution associated with fault-shale caprock configuration leakages is established through superposing hydrocarbon distribution at deep basin fault-shale caprock configuration leakages, and conducting faults to understand distribution of shallow reservoirs of “lower generation, upper accumulation” in petroliferous basins based on fault-shale caprock configuration leakage mechanism. Prediction of hydrocarbon distribution at the Ed-3 Member in the south of the northern Dagang area of Bohai Bay Basin was used to demonstrate the application of the proposed method. Results show that predicted oil and gas at the Ed-3 Member are mainly distributed in the middle of the north and in the middle of the south edge, where fault-shale caprock configuration leakages in the middle of the Sha-1 Member contributed positively to oil and gas migration from the hydrocarbon reservoir at deep basin to the shallow reservoirs. The prediction matches well with discovered o... [more]

Colloid Migration as a Reason for Porous Sandstone Permeability Degradation during Coreflooding
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: colloids migration, core test, permeability, porous media
During coreflooding under stationary conditions, permeability is determined by the Darcy formula; thus, the apparent permeability is determined, which characterizes the average hydraulic conductivity of the core, but does not take into account the processes occurring at the microlevel. Transient processes during fluid injection regime change are important for understanding the evolution of permeability and underlie such phenomena as permeability degradation and its hysteresis. Our paper presents the coreflooding methodology and the results showing that during changes in injection conditions, the permeability of samples can significantly decrease due to the migration of colloids. In the developed methodology, coreflooding conditions exclude the influence of other factors on permeability, such as creep, the chemical reactions of rocks and fluids, and chemical mobilization of colloids. It has been established that the decrease in permeability occurs only when fluid is injected through the... [more]

Interpretation of Eccentricity of an Enameled Wire by Capacitance Measurements
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: capacitance, dielectric, eccentricity, enameled wire
There are systems dedicated to measuring the eccentricity of enameled wires based on optical and electromagnetic phenomena. However, these methods are limited by the nature of the insulation and the conductor. The proposed solution consists of checking the wire eccentricity by an electrical measurement. Since it is a conductor on which an insulator is placed, the idea consists of forming a capacitor and measuring its capacitance in order to deduce the insulation thickness.

Processing Studies on Banded Hematite Quartzite’s of Sandur Sciht, Karnataka, India
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: iron ore, liberation, mineralogy, reverse flotation, tabling, WHIMS
The greater demand for high-quality iron ores has forced the iron and steel industries to utilize low-grade iron ores, such as banded hematite quartzite (BHQ). In the present work, a striped hematite quartzite sample from the Haraginadoni area, in the Sandur schist belt, Ballari District, Karnataka, India, was subjected to characterization studies and conventional mineral processing methods to produce pellet-grade concentrate, assayed as Fe > 63.0%, SiO2 + Al2O3 < 7%, (Al2O3/SiO2 < 0.5). The sample was analyzed as 35.70% Fe, 47.44% SiO2, 0.75% Al2O3, 0.06% Mn, 0.07% TiO2, 0.03% P, 0.02% S, and 0.83% LOI. We focused on two routes of beneficiating BHQ samples: (1) conventional gravity followed by reverse floatation and (2) magnetic separation followed by cleaning of magnetic concentrate by reverse floatation. Route 1, achieved pellet-grade concentrate through assaying, and was 63.73% Fe, 6.20% SiO2, 0.19% Al2O3, 0.03% Al2O3/SiO2, and 0.23% LOI, D80 45 µm, with 70.1% Fe recovery and... [more]

An Experimental Study on Thermal Performance of Graphite-Based Phase-Change Materials for High-Power Batteries
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: graphite, high power applications, high thermal conductivity, phase-change materials, thermal management
High-power lithium-ion capacitors (LiC) are hybrid energy storage systems (EES) with the combined benefits of lithium-ion batteries (LiB) and supercapacitors, such as high specific energy, high specific power, and a long lifetime. Such advanced technology can be used in high-power applications when high charging and discharging are demanded. Nevertheless, their performance and lifetime highly depend on temperature. In this context, this paper presents an optimal passive thermal management system (TMS) employing phase-change materials (PCM) combined with graphite to maintain the LiC maximum temperature. To evaluate the thermal response of the PCM and the PCM/G, experimental tests have been performed. The results exhibit that when the cell is under natural convection, the maximum temperature exceeds 55 °C, which is very harmful for the cell’s lifetime. Using the pure paraffin PCM, the maximum temperature of the LiC was reduced from 55.3 °C to 40.2 °C, which shows a 27.3% temperature redu... [more]

Streaming Electrification of C60 Fullerene Doped Insulating Liquids for Power Transformers Applications
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: C60 fullerene, dielectric liquids, electrostatic charging tendency, flow system, insulation diagnostics, insulation system, mineral oil, nanofluids, nanoparticles, natural ester, power transformers, streaming electrification, synthetic ester
Long-term and fault-free operation of power transformers depends on the electrical strength of the insulation system and effective heat dissipation. Forced circulation of the insulating liquid is used to increase the cooling capacity. A negative effect of such a solution is the creation of the phenomenon of streaming electrification, which in unfavorable conditions may lead to damage to the insulating system of the transformer. This paper presents results of research confirming the possibility of using fullerene C60 to reduce the phenomenon of streaming electrification generated by the flow of liquid dielectrics. The volume charge density qw was used as a material indicator to determine the electrostatic charging tendency (ECT) of nanofluids. This parameter was determined from the Abedian-Sonin electrification model on the basis of electrification current measurements and selected physicochemical and electrical properties of the liquid. The electrification current was measured in a flo... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: composite material, motor sleeve, prestress manufacturing, stress design
As a key component to ensure the safety and stability of the surface-mounted permanent magnet motor rotor, stress research on the sleeve has long been a subject that has attracted researchers. Fiber-reinforced composite materials have the characteristics of high specific strength, high specific modulus, and low eddy current loss. The use of a fiber-reinforced composite material sleeve that can effectively reduce the thickness of the sleeve and structural weight, and can improve the power density of the motor is an inevitable trend of the development of high-performance permanent magnet motors. This paper summarizes the matching of fibers and resins of composite materials to the sleeve: the stress design criteria, stress calculation method, and stress influencing factors of the composite sleeve; two typical stress-forming methods of the composite sleeve; and the preloading effect of the sleeve, strength, and rotor prototype performance testing. Measurement of the Green Façade Prototype in a Climate Chamber: Impact of Watering Regime on the Surface Temperatures
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: air cavity, evapotranspiration, experimental, irrigation, overheating, recycling, vegetation
Green façades with an active water regime and the water flowing through the substrate itself are not common. This system reduces the temperatures and incorporates the evapotranspiration, which could be more effective than by the regular green façades. The use of a double-skin façade with a ventilated air cavity can reduce the heat load, but the evapotranspiration can reduce it even more with additional benefits. Green façades could also serve as a key element for reducing the surface temperatures of the insulated metal panels (IMP), which are mostly used as a façade system for production facilities or factories. In this paper, a prototype of a double-skin façade, which consisted of vegetation board from recycled materials and IMP, is tested in a climate chamber to evaluate the function and benefits of such a combination. The outdoor skin is made from board, the surface of which is covered by the rooted succulent plants. Measurement results are represented as a direct comparison of sing... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: doping, lead chalcogenide, perovskite, photovoltaics, quantum dot
Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals have generated tremendous interest because of their solution processability and robust tunability. Among such nanocrystals, the colloidal quantum dot (CQD) draws the most attention for its well-known quantum size effects. In the last decade, applications of CQDs have been booming in electronics and optoelectronics, especially in photovoltaics. Electronically doped semiconductors are critical in the fabrication of solar cells, because carefully designed band structures are able to promote efficient charge extraction. Unlike conventional semiconductors, diffusion and ion implantation technologies are not suitable for doping CQDs. Therefore, researchers have creatively developed alternative doping methods for CQD materials and devices. In order to provide a state-of-the-art summary and comprehensive understanding to this research community, we focused on various doping techniques and their applications for photovoltaics and demystify them from differen... Subject: Materials
Keywords: H-type aggregation, metal–organic framework, perylene diimide, photosensitizer, singlet oxygen
In the face of anthropogenic global warming the design and synthesis of materials, which enable energy transfer processes using sunlight as an energy source, are of high interest. Perylenediimides are a highly absorbing class of chromophores suitable for sunlight absorption and conversion. Therefore, metal−organic frameworks (MOFs) and coordination polymers (CPs) with incorporated organic perylene chromophores are highly interesting materials both for applied, but also fundamental, photophysical research. MOFs/CPs have the advantage of a modular adjustability of interchromophoric distances and angles, and the choice of metal nodes can be used to further tune the material towards the desired photophysical properties. In the present paper, we present a study using a reported organic perylenediimide (PDI) chromophore (H2tpdb) as a linker to be incorporated into coordination polymer and test towards applicability within the photochemical 1O2 generation. Computational Model of Shell and Finned Tube Latent Thermal Energy Storage Developed as a New TRNSYS Type
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: computational model, dynamic system simulation, latent thermal energy storage, phase change material, trnsys
This paper presents the development of a computational model of latent thermal energy storage (LTES) in a shell and tube configuration with longitudinal fins. The model describes the physical process of transient heat transfer between the heat transfer fluid (HTF) and the phase change material (PCM) in LTES. For modeling the phase change of the PCM, the enthalpy formulation was used. Based on a one-dimensional computational model, a new Trnsys type was developed and written in Fortran. Validation of the LTES model was performed by comparing numerically and experimentally obtained data for the melting and solidification of paraffin RT 25 as the PCM and water as the HTF. Numerical investigations of the effect of HTF inlet temperature and HTF flow rate on heat transfer in LTES confirmed that significant improvement in heat transfer between the HTF and PCM could be achieved by increasing the HTF inlet temperature during charging or decreasing the HTF inlet temperature during discharging. Subject: Materials
Keywords: binders, bioeconomy, bioenergy, Biomass, briquettes, densification
The adverse effect of the use of fossil fuels on the environment and public health has given rise to a sustained renewable energy research and development. An important component of global renewable energy mix is the use of loose biomass, including agricultural and forestry residues, to produce solid fuels in the form of briquettes. Briquettes play a significant role in bioenergy mix in developing and developed countries. The production of biomass briquettes often entails the collection, transportation, storage, processing, and compaction of loose biomass that meet specific quality parameters. The densification process often involves the addition of binders to improve the cohesive strength of the briquette material. This paper surveys recent literature from 2012 to 2021 to establish the current state of research on the use of binders in briquette production; and reviews current parameters used in assessing the quality of biomass briquettes with focus on mechanical and handling properti... A Study on the Effect of Initial Temperature on Combustion Characteristics of RDX Based on the Optical Diagnosis Methods
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: combustion, NO chemiluminescence, optical diagnosis, RDX, thermal radiation
The purpose of this work is to investigate the effect of different initial temperatures on the combustion characteristics of RDX materials. In the experiments, the electric heating plate below the RDX samples was controlled so that the initial temperatures were set to be 298, 323, 373, 423, and 473 K (below the material melting point), respectively. Three optical diagnostic methods were employed to capture the ignition process, flame thermal radiation, and NO distribution in the flame at different conditions. The results show that the increase in initial temperature can improve the reaction rate, shorten the ignition delay time, and increase the flame combustion intensity and speed, because of the earlier evaporation and pyrolysis process in the RDX samples. Increasing the initial temperature also enhances the thermal effect of the flame, which is related to the generation and consumption of NO to a certain extent.

Tests Regarding the Effect of Dispersed Reinforcement Made with a Prototype Device from PET Beverage Bottles on the Strength Properties of Concrete
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: concrete, disposal of PET bottle waste, PET waste from beverage bottles, scattered reinforcement
Currently, waste generation is a huge problem all over the world. The largest source of generated waste is plastics from plastic packaging made of polyethylene and polypropylene, including PET bottles. Modern ecology aims to reduce the carbon footprint by recycling plastics or by producing biodegradable plastics that are completely broken down by microorganisms into simple particles that occur naturally in nature. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) has good mechanical properties but is resistant to microorganisms. As a result, it cannot be classified as a biodegradable plastic, but when it is reused for the production of utility products, it becomes a bioplastic. A good way to dispose of PET is to use it for the production of utility products, in which its good mechanical properties can be used. Concrete is a basic material, the consumption of which in the construction industry is enormous. One of the negative features of concrete is its low tensile strength, which can be improved with c... Exhaust Gas Temperature Pulsations of a Gasoline Engine and Its Stabilization Using Thermal Energy Storage System to Reduce Emissions
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: combustion engine, exhaust gas temperature, Gasoline, PCM material, temperature pulsations, thermal energy storage system
Modern automotive gasoline engines have highly efficient after-treatment systems that reduce exhaust gas emissions. However, this efficiency greatly depends on the conditions of the exhaust gas, mainly the temperature and air−fuel ratio. The temperature instability during transient conditions may cause a reduction in the efficiency of the three-way catalyst (TWC). By using a thermal energy storage system before TWC, this negative effect can be suppressed. In this paper, the effects of the temperature stabilization on the efficiency of the three-way catalyst were investigated on a 1-D turbocharged gasoline engine model, with a focus on fuel consumption and emissions. The thermal energy storage system (TESS) was based on PCM materials and was built in the exhaust between the turbine and TWC to use the energy of the exhaust gas. Three different materials were picked up as possible mediums in the storage system. Based on the results, the usage of a TESS in a gasoline after-treatment system... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: aluminum, ball-milling, bismuth, hydrogen generation, hydrolysis, mechanochemical activation, nickel
The hydrolysis of aluminum (Al) is a promising method for on-demand hydrogen generation for low-power proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) applications. In this study, Al composites were mechanochemically activated using bismuth (Bi) and nickel (Ni) as activation compounds. The main objective was to determine the effects of Bi and Ni on Al particles during mechanochemical processing, and the hydrolysis activity of the Al-Bi-Ni composites. Successfully formulated ternary Al-Bi-Ni composites were hydrolyzed with de-ionized water under standard ambient conditions to determine the reactivity of the composite (extent of hydrogen production). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that Bi and Ni were distributed relatively uniformly throughout the Al particles, resulting in numerous micro-galvanic interactions between the anodic Al and cathodic Bi/Ni during hydrolysis reaction. The addition of >1 wt% Ni resulted in incomplete activation of Al, and such composites were non-reactive.... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: efficiency, energy gain, flat plate solar collector, hybrid nanofluids
Flat plate solar collectors can easily be termed as the most vastly studied alternative energy transforming and generating technology of the twenty-first century. As the world is racing towards the fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0), more and more energy is being consumed for mega projects to be materialized. Electronic devices are not only confined to conventional intermittent and costlier electric energy, but also fuel. Solar energy is now being shared to work smart devices, transform electric energy, and operate automobiles, aeronautics, water heating, and space heating. Traditional flat plate solar collectors can only occupy 50−60% of their thermal efficiency, resulting in less heat generation and a low thermal performance because of using a common absorber made of copper tubing compared to a high conductive metal sheet (copper or aluminum). To ameliorate the thermal efficiency of the solar collector, it is imperative to find a superior alternative heat exchanger that will... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: doping, first-principles calculations, high-throughput screening, metals and alloys
Zr2Fe alloys have been widely used in fusion energy and hydrogen energy for hydrogen storage. However, disproportionation reactions occur easily in Zr-based alloys at medium and high temperatures, which greatly reduces the storage capacity of the alloys, and is not conducive to repeated cycle applications. The doping of Zr-based alloys with appropriate transition metal elements has been found to significantly improve their H storage properties and prevent hydrogen disproportionation. A convenient approach is required to efficiently predict the desirable doped structures that are physically stable with optimal properties. In this paper, based on the MatCloud High-Throughput Material Integrated Computing Platform (MatCloud), an automated process algorithm was established to solve the disproportionation reaction of Zr2Fe. Rather than testing the doping materials one by one, such high-throughput material screening is effective in reducing the computational time. The structural stability of... [more]

Efficiency Analytical Characterization for Brushless Electric Drives
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: efficiency characterization, electrical drive efficiency, Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM)
The paper is focused on the formalization of an experimental procedure aimed to characterize the efficiency behaviour of a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor-based drive. The characterization is intended to expose the analytical behaviour of the system efficiency by the actual operating condition assigned through torque/speed value. The availability of such a relation in a simple analytical form would allow for real-time adjustment by advanced power management strategies to maximize the whole system efficiency. The proposed method is based on a defined set of measures corresponding to several drive operating conditions. A straightforward elaboration procedure is then formulated with the aim to quantify the different parameters, which intervene in the efficiency characterization. The method has been applied on a 155 kW drive. The results show that good accuracy is achieved while keeping the analytical approach relatively simple.
