Distribution Characteristics of Micro Remaining Oil of Class III Reservoirs after Fracture Flooding in Daqing Oilfield
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: computed tomography scan, fracture flooding, laser scanning confocal, microscopic residual oil, NMR
The class III reservoir in the Daqing Oilfield has poor sand body development, poor reservoir physical properties, and poor effects of measures. Its water drive recovery degree is low and the remaining reserves are large. It is the key target oil layer of the Daqing Oilfield. Due to the sedimentary characteristics and reservoir physical properties of class III reservoirs, conventional EOR technology (chemical flooding) and conventional stimulation and injection measures (fracturing) have poor potential tapping effects on class III reservoirs. According to the special reservoir conditions and development characteristics of the class III reservoir in the Daqing Oilfield, fracture-flooding technology is innovatively proposed, which greatly improves the recovery of remaining oil in class III reservoirs. The rapid injection of hydraulic surface activators into the formation and displacement of the remaining oil in class III reservoirs through rock core flooding experiments were simulated in... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: differences in genetic mechanism, high-quality reservoir, Paleogene, Pearl River Mouth Basin, primary porosity, secondary porosity
The Lufeng Sag and Huizhou Sag, both located in the Zhu-1 Depression, have similar geographical locations, but their reservoir characteristics in the Paleogene Wenchang Formation show obvious differences. Primary intergranular pores are mainly developed in the Lufeng Sag. However, secondary pores are the main reservoir space in the Huizhou depression. Overall, the reservoir properties of the Lufeng Sag are better than those of the Huizhou Sag. To analyse the differences between the Paleogene reservoirs in these two areas, this study mainly uses assay data, such as rock thin sections, scanning electron microscope images, drilling, and logging, to analyse the differential development mechanisms of high-quality reservoirs, and two types of reservoir development models were concluded. The results show that the anti-compaction primary porosity preservation mode is mainly developed in the Lufeng Sag. High compositional maturity quartz sandstone is the congenital condition of primary porosity... [more]

A Comparison of Adaptive Ultrasound Reflectometry Calibration Methods for Use in Lubrication Films
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: adaptive, calibration, film thickness, lubrication, reflectometry, tribology, ultrasound
Adaptive calibration for ultrasound reflectometry methods used in the detection of lubrication film thickness is of great research interest. This is mainly due to the versatile non-destructive implementation of the technology in industrial applications, allowing for measurements of the lubrication film thickness, which directly relates to the friction, wear, and overall efficiency of the system. This study reviews and compares a curve fitting, extended Kalman filter, and resonance frequency detection adaptive calibration approach. Furthermore, the study compares two different regression models, used for the curve fitting and the extended Kalman filter approach. The study compares the methods and regression models based on both a theoretical and experimental analysis. The experimental analysis is based on data with varying lubrication film thickness. The lubrication film thickness is varied such that the resonance frequency is both detectable and non-detectable within the ultrasound tra... [more]

Quantifying of Vision through Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal Double-Glazed Window
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: image processing, PDLC smart film, smart windows, vision through windows, visual comfort
The visual linking of a building’s occupants with the outside views is a basic property of windows. However, vision through windows is not yet a metricized factor. The previous research employs a human survey methods to assess the vision through conventional windows. The recently fabricated smart films add a changeable visual transparency feature to the windows. The varied operating transparency challenges the evaluation of vision. Therefore, surveying human preferences is no longer a feasible approach for smart windows. This paper proposes an image-processing-based approach to quantify the vision quality through smart windows. The proposed method was experimentally applied to a polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) double-glazed window. The system instantaneously determines the available contrast band of the scenes seen through the window. The system adjusts the excitation of the PDLC film to maintain a desired vision level within the determined vision band. A preferred vision ratio... [more]

Horizontal Vibration Characteristics of a Tapered Pile in Arbitrarily Layered Soil
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: arbitrarily layered soil, dynamic impedance, horizontal vibration, linear viscoelastic medium, tapered pile
A tapered pile (TP) is a new type of pile with a good bearing capacity, and scholars have conducted in-depth research on its static bearing characteristics. However, there is relatively little research on its dynamic bearing characteristics. In this paper, the horizontal vibration behavior of a tapered pile in arbitrarily layered soil is studied. Utilizing the Winkler foundation model and Timoshenko beam model to simulate pile-surrounding soil (PSS) and a tapered pile, respectively, the horizontal vibration model of a tapered pile embedded in layered soil was built. The analytical solutions for the horizontal displacement (HD), bending moment (BM), and shear force (SF) of a tapered pile were derived, and then the solutions for the horizontal dynamic impedance (HDI), rocking dynamic impedance (RDI), and horizontal-rocking coupling dynamic impedance (HRDI) of pile head were obtained. Using the present solutions, the effects of soil and pile properties on the horizontal vibration characte... [more]

Influence of As-N Interstitial Complexes on Strain Generated in GaAsN Epilayers Grown by AP-MOVPE
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: AP-MOVPE, dilute nitrides, HRXRD, III-V semiconductors, nitrogen interstitial complexes, Raman spectroscopy, XPS
This work presents an investigation of the fully strained GaAsN/GaAs heterostructures obtained by atmospheric pressure metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy, focusing on the analysis of the strain generated in the GaAsN epilayers and its correlation with the formation of split interstitial complexes (N-As)As. We analyzed strained GaAsN epilayers with nitrogen contents and thicknesses varying from 0.93 to 1.81% and 65 to 130 nm, respectively. The composition and thickness were determined by high resolution X-ray diffraction, and the strain was determined by Raman spectroscopy, while the N-bonding configurations were determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We found that the strain generated in the GaAsN epilayers is mainly caused by a lattice mismatch with the GaAs substrate. This macroscopic strain is independent of the amount of (N-As)As interstitial defects, while the local strain, induced by an alloying effect, tends to decrease with an increasing ratio of (N-As)As interstitial de... March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: conductive polymers, electrocatalysis, Energy Storage, molecular structure, nitroxyl, power sources, redox polymers, stable radicals, TEMPO
The need for environmentally benign portable energy storage drives research on organic batteries and catalytic systems. These systems are a promising replacement for commonly used energy storage devices that rely on limited resources such as lithium and rare earth metals. The redox-active TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-oxyl-4-yl) fragment is a popular component of organic systems, as its benefits include remarkable electrochemical performance and decent physical properties. TEMPO is also known to be an efficient catalyst for alcohol oxidation, oxygen reduction, and various complex organic reactions. It can be attached to various aliphatic and conductive polymers to form high-loading catalysis systems. The performance and efficiency of TEMPO-containing materials strongly depend on the molecular structure, and thus rational design of such compounds is vital for successful implementation. We discuss synthetic approaches for producing electroactive polymers based on conductive and n... [more]

Relationships between the Petrographic and Abrasive Properties of Sandstones in the Aspect of Their Cutting
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: abrasive wear, conical picks, cutting, rock properties, underground mining
The research described in this article was carried out on samples of sandstone obtained from the underground excavations of four hard coal mines that operate in the region of Poland with the highest energy resources, i.e., Upper Silesia. The majority of underground tunnel excavations are mainly drilled using roadheaders, the organs of which are equipped with conical picks. The selection of pick type is usually based on rock compressive strength. However, sandstones often cause more problems during cutting compared to other waste rocks because of their variety. This article’s primary purpose is to emphasize the importance of researching various properties of waste rock in addition to uniaxial compression strength, which is crucial in the selection of both the appropriate cutting method and appropriate cutting tools. Accordingly, relations between mineralogical, petrographic, physical and mechanical properties were examined in this study, with special attention paid to the abrasive prope... [more]

Study on the Causes of Water Blocking Damage and Its Solutions in Gas Reservoirs with Microfluidic Technology
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: microfluidic technology, nano-emulsion, removal methods, water blocking damage, wettability
The water blocking damage to the reservoir caused by the invasion of external fluid is one of the main factors that affect the efficient development of tight sandstone gas reservoirs. In this paper, microfluidic chip technology is used to explore the causes of water blocking damage in porous media and find suitable recovery solutions. The research results show that reducing the gas-liquid capillary pressure can effectively reduce the rate and quantity of spontaneous speed of cores. After chemical treatment, the liquid phase fluidity of the non-fractured matrix core is increased by 1.72 times, and that of the fractured core is increased by 2.13 times. In water wetting porous media, there are mainly four types of liquid hold-up: (1) Liquid hold-up in the dead volume of a non-connected pore; (2) The water phase in the pore throat with a small inner diameter cannot be driven away due to its larger capillary pressure; (3) Adsorption viscous force, the wetting phase is adsorbed on the surfac... Dielectric Response Model for Transformer Insulation Using Frequency Domain Spectroscopy and Vector Fitting
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: dielectric response, extended Debye model, frequency domain spectroscopy, transformer insulation, vector fitting
This paper proposes a rational approximation-based approach to find positive real parameters for the extended Debye model (EDM), aimed at condition assessment of insulation systems of power transformers. The EDM can model the slow and fast polarization phenomenon, including relaxation mechanisms with different relaxation times within a composite dielectric material. In the proposed approach, the complex permittivity of the transformer’s composite insulation is approximated via rational functions, as given by the vector fitting (VF) software tool, and the EDM parameters are identified from the obtained poles/residues. To guarantee positive real parameters, i.e., a physically realizable circuit, VF is internally modified to calculate the final residues of the rational approximation via a constrained linear least-squares problem without resorting to further post-processing algorithms, as in existing methods, hence without affecting fitting accuracy. Impacts of Harmonic Voltage Distortions on the Dynamic Behavior and the PRPD Patterns of Partial Discharges in an Air Cavity Inside a Solid Dielectric Material
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: finite element analysis, harmonic components, insulation systems, internal cavities, partial discharges, PRPD patterns, simulation model
The monitoring of partial discharges (PDs) is one of the main methods used worldwide for evaluation and diagnosis of the insulation conditions in equipment powered by medium and high voltages. The occurrence of PDs is usually an indication of the appearance of insulation defects, which over time can compromise the dielectric withstand of the material used, increasing the probability of complete breakdown. In general, laboratory tests for detecting and registering PDs are carried out using purely sinusoidal voltages. However, it is very common for an electrical asset to be subjected at some point in its operating life to voltages distorted by harmonic components. Some studies reported in the literature reveal that harmonic distortions can affect the PDs’ characteristics, nevertheless, the effects of individual harmonic components on PDs still need to be analyzed. In this context, this paper proposes to evaluate the impacts of harmonic voltage distortions on the dynamic behavior and the... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: ecological coefficient of performance, entropy production, heat transfer, inclination angle, inner spheres, MWCNT, numerical analysis, SWCNT
A numerical study is conducted to evaluate the steady natural convective heat transfer problem and entropy generation of both single wall (SWCNT) and multi wall (MWCNT) nanoparticles with water as a base liquid over two spaced spheres. The isothermally heated spheres are located between two plates of short length. The cooled plates are maintained at different inclination angles. Wave Velocity in Sandstone and Mudstone under High Temperature and Overpressure in Yinggehai Basin
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: P-wave and S-wave velocity, pressure, sandstone and mudstone, seismic rock physics, temperature
Wave velocity under different pressure and temperature (PT) conditions plays an important role in the exploration of oil and gas reservoirs. We obtained the mineral composition and porosity of 20 underground sandstone and mudstone samples in Yinggehai Basin via X-ray diffraction and porosity measurements. Using high-frequency ultrasound, the P- and S-wave velocities of four samples under high temperature and overpressure conditions were found to vary significantly, owing to the material composition and porosity. According to the comparison between the experimental conclusion and the well-logging data, the genesis of false bright spot and dark spot gas reservoirs in the study area was analyzed. The variation in P-wave velocity under different temperature and pressure conditions was explained with the PT coefficient. The traditional pressure−velocity and temperature−velocity prediction methods were improved and applied to well-logging data. Herein, the velocity of P- or S-waves of sand a... [more]
