The Use of Geomaterials to Restore the Utility Value of Post-Mining Areas
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: geosynthetic materials, geotechnics, post-mining subsidence, underground extraction
Post-mining deformations that occur on the surface pose a significant threat to natural environments and urbanized areas. Preventing the effects of deformation is a significant challenge for specialists in geotechnical and civil engineering. Geomaterials, such as geosynthetics or geopolymers, could minimize the damage that occurs. The first section of the article explores the securing of an area, strengthening the rock mass with geosynthetic materials. We provide descriptions of the properties of these materials and the method surrounding their introduction into the soil. The second section presents the research problem, i.e., we describe the damage caused by underground mining. In the last section, we propose a solution for securing the ground with the use of geogrids and geopolymer injections into the rock mass. The analyses led us to conclude that an area subjected to mining influences may be strengthened by the use of geosynthetic materials. The use of geosynthetics in a mining are... [more]

Forest Dendromass as Energy Feedstock: Diversity of Properties and Composition Depending on Systematic Genus and Organ
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: bark, branch, chemical composition, dendromass, extracts, forest biomass, heating value, proximate analysis, ultimate analysis, wood
Exhaustion of fossil fuel resources, shrinking forest areas, with accompanying deterioration of their quality and striving (also of the society) to make forests perform their ecological function, with simultaneous development and propagation of the biomass conversion technologies—all of this necessitates research of forest biomass diversification. It is a consequence of the fact that its properties and composition depend not only on the genus but also on the plant organ, and they each time determine its usability as a raw biomaterial in a wide range of thermal, physical, or chemical conversion processes. This study reviewed and analysed selected qualitative and quantitative features of forest dendromass, taking into account the genus and a plant organ/morphological part, followed by a group of trees (coniferous and deciduous) and without the latter differentiation. The study involved an analysis of data covering 15 selected qualitative-quantitative features of forest dendromass within... [more]

Performance Analysis of Calcium-Doped Titania (TiO2) as an Effective Electron Transport Layer (ETL) for Perovskite Solar Cells
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Ca-TiO2, perovskite solar cells, photovoltaics, sol-gel, thin films
Ca-doped TiO2 films were synthesized by the modified sol-gel method and employed as the electron transport material of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Morphological, optoelectronic, thermal, and electrical studies of thin films were investigated through XRD, RAMAN, SEM, AFM, UV-Vis, FTIR, and IV characteristics. Ca doping was detected with the help of structural properties while morphological analysis revealed that thin films based on Ca-doped titania are crack-free, homogenous, and uniformly distributed. Further optoelectronic properties have shown a promising conversion efficiency of 9.79% for 2% Ca-doped titania followed by 1% Ca-doped titania, while 3% have shown the lowest conversion efficiency among these prepared samples. The 2% an optimized doping of Ca has shown an almost two-fold increase in conversion efficiency in comparison to pristine TiO2, along with an increase in current density from 15 mA⋅cm−2 to 19.3 mA⋅cm−2. Improved energy efficiency and higher current density are a... [more]

Estimation of Total Solar Transmittance for Twin-Wall Polycarbonate Sheet with Rectangular Structure on the Basis of Experimental Research
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: polycarbonate enclosure, polycarbonate transmittance, polycarbonate twin-wall structure, total solar transmittance
The consumption of heat energy as well as electric power in an exploitation process of a building construction depends among others on properties of materials applied to construct its partitions. Increasingly, glass is being replaced by plastics in transparent partitions, including multi-wall polycarbonate sheets. Light transmission and solar radiation transferred to the object’s inside through transparent partitions are decisive factors for its lighting and energy balance. The present paper presents an analysis, on an experimental basis, of the changes of total solar transmittance (TST) for a clear twin-wall polycarbonate sheet with a rectangular structure applied as a swimming pool enclosure. Research shows that values of the above parameter do not depend meaningfully on cloudiness but on time of day. Values of TST can change in the daytime depending on incidence angles and on shares of direct and diffusive solar radiation in global solar radiation. TST values are in the range 0.6−0.... [more]

Nanostructured Broadband Solar Absorber for Effective Photothermal Conversion and Electricity Generation
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: anodic aluminum oxide, polyaniline nanoparticles, solar absorber, thermoelectricity generator
Photothermal conversion is an environmentally friendly process that harvests energy from the sun and has been attracting growing research interest in recent years. However, nanostructured strategies to improve light capture performance deserve further development, and the application of solar heating effects for clean energy needs to be explored. Herein, a multiscale nanomaterial was prepared by in situ polymerizing the polyaniline (PANI) nanoparticles into porous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membrane. As a result, the as-prepared PANI-AAO shows broadband solar absorption and provides a platform for efficient photothermal conversion. What is more, we introduced a typical thermoelectricity generator (TEG) with excellent output performance and combined it with PANI-AAO to prepare a solar thermoelectric generator (s-TEG). The s-TEG harvests solar energy and converts it into electricity, showing an outstanding power generation capability in outdoor conditions. Thus, the nanostructured broad... [more]

Analysis of Linear Hybrid Excited Flux Switching Machines with Low-Cost Ferrite Magnets
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: double mover, double stator, ferrite magnet, finite element analysis, flux regulation, linear machines
Linear hybrid excited flux switching machines (LHEFSM) combine the features of permanent magnet flux switching machines (PMFSM) and field excited flux switching machines (FEFSM). Because of the widespread usage of rare-earth PM materials, their costs are steadily rising. This study proposes an LHEFSM, a dual stator LHEFSM (DSLHEFSM), and a dual mover LHEFSM (DMLHEFSM) to solve this issue. The employment of ferrite magnets rather than rare-earth PM in these suggested designs is significant. Compared to traditional designs, the proposed designs feature greater thrust force, power density, reduced normal force, and a 25% decrease in PM volume. A yokeless primary structure was used in a DSLHEFSM to minimize the volume of the mover, increasing the thrust force density. In DMLHELFSM, on the other hand, a yokeless secondary structure was used to lower the secondary volume and the machine’s total cost. Single variable optimization was used to optimize all of the proposed designs. By completing... [more]

A Study on the Possibility of Using Iron Scale in the Construction of Electromagnetic Field Shields
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: composites, electromagnetic radiation, EMI shielding, iron scale, waste materials
Electromagnetic radiation can have a negative effect on electronic circuits, for example, by disrupting their work and communication. Therefore, there is a need to reduce or eliminate electromagnetic interference using shields. This paper focuses on using waste materials in the form of iron scale, which is easy and inexpensive to obtain for shielding. Iron scale is the result of gaseous or aqueous corrosion, due to which a superficial layer of metal oxides formed on the surface of heated metal objects as a result of their contact with air or water during an industrial process is developed. In this study, morphology, chemical, and phase composition measurements were carried out. The results show that all the iron-based materials investigated are mainly composed of iron oxides and pure iron. The polymer−iron composites with different quantitative and qualitative compositions were prepared to verify the shielding effectiveness. The electrical resistance, impact strength, and magnetic prop... [more]

Fast Quantitative Modelling Method for Infrared Spectrum Gas Logging Based on Adaptive Step Sliding Partial Least Squares
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: adaptive step sliding, fast quantitative modelling, gas logging, infrared spectroscopy, partial least squares
Infrared spectroscopy (IR) quantitative analysis technology has shown excellent development potential in the field of oil and gas logging. However, due to the high overlap of the IR absorption peaks of alkane molecules and the offset of the absorption peaks in complex environments, the quantitative analysis of IR spectroscopy applied in the field puts forward higher requirements for modelling speed and accuracy. In this paper, a new type of fast IR spectroscopy quantitative analysis method based on adaptive step-sliding partial least squares (ASS-PLS) is designed. A sliding step control function is designed to change the position of the local PLS analysis model in the full spectrum band adaptively based on the relative change of the current root mean square error and the global minimum root-mean-square error for rapid modelling. The study in this paper reveals the influence of the position and width of the local modelling window on the performance, and how to quickly determine the opti... [more]

The Impact of a New Accounting Standard on Assets, Liabilities and Leverage of Companies: Evidence from Energy Industry
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: energy industry, financial reporting, IFRS 16, leasing, leverage on assets, leverage on equity, materiality
The climate policy of the EU enforced substantial changes for producers and suppliers of energy. New assets and providers of capital are needed to fulfill the policy requirements. To provide comparability and facilitate an investment process, EU law requires companies to prepare annual financial statements according to International Financial Reporting Standards. One of these accounting standards—IFRS 16 Leases—specifies how to recognize, measure, present and disclose leases. It came into force in 2019 and implemented a single lessee accounting model, contrary to a dual accounting approach for lease accounting. The latter approach enabled companies to keep leased tangible assets and respective liabilities off-balance sheet. By using a sample of companies from the energy industry (oil, gas, energy and mining sectors) that are listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange, we examine, measure, and analyze the impact of IFRS 16 Leases implementation on the value of assets, liabilities and leverage... Optimizing the Synthesis and Thermal Properties of Conducting Polymer−Montmorillonite Clay Nanocomposites
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: conducting polymers, montmorillonite clay, nanocomposites, polyaniline
Given the availability of a wide range of properties not possessed by individual materials, nanocomposites based on conducting polymers and inorganic materials have attracted much deserved attention. However, there has been little attempt to optimize the synthesis and thermal properties of polyaniline−clay nanocomposites. In this study, the synthesis and thermal properties of polyaniline (PANi) and polyaniline−clay nanocomposites (PACN) were performed by systematically varying the feed composition. Both PANi and polyaniline−montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites were prepared by using ammonium persulfate (APS) as the oxidant. The chemical structure of the nanocomposites was studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). FTIR spectra confirmed the presence of clay in the nanocomposites and the existence of mainly the emiraldine form of PANi. Thermal analysis was performed by using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The morphology and... [more]

Properties of Animal-Origin Ash—A Valuable Material for Circular Economy
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: animal-origin biomass, ash characterization, Biomass, biomass ash, chicken litter, chlorine corrosion, cow manure, SEM, slagging
In the presented paper, two types of animal-origin biomass, cow dung and chicken litter, are characterized in terms of combustion-related problems and ash properties. It was found that these parameters strongly depend on the farming style. Whether it is cow dung or chicken litter, free-range raw materials are characterized by higher ash contents than industrial farming ones. Free-range samples contain chlorine at lower levels, while industrial farming samples are chlorine rich. Free-range samples are characterized by the predominant content of silica in the ash: 75.60% in cow dung and 57.11% in chicken litter, while industrial farming samples contain more calcium. Samples were classified by 11 “slagging indices” based on the ash and fuel composition to evaluate their tendencies for slagging, fouling, ash deposition and bed agglomeration. Furthermore, an assessment was made against the current EU law regulations, whether the ashes can be component materials for fertilizers. The phosphor... [more]

Microwave-Assisted Pyrolysis of Leather Waste
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: bioproduct, chromium salt tannin, compound distribution, fraction composition, leather waste, microwave-assisted pyrolysis, physical recovery, vegetable tannins
The processing of leather into leather is one of the oldest known manufacturing practices. The subsequent refinement of this technique over recent centuries has led to an increase in production, which in turn has led to an increase in waste production. Today, many of the by-products and waste streams from the leather industry have applications in industries such as petfood and in the production of collagen and derivatives, while others, such as waste from trimming and scraping the material, are disposed of in landfills, causing a detrimental environmental impact. For this reason, new alternatives for the treatment of these wastes, such as pyrolysis, are being investigated. The aim of this work is to assess the feasibility of recovering non-recyclable waste from the leather industry by pyrolysis. Waste from the tanning of cowhides with vegetable tannins and tanning with chrome salts, without pre-treatment, were used as raw materials. The operating conditions of the microwave-assisted py... March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: kinetics simulation, magnetic nanoparticles, microwave pyrolysis, oily sludge, thermogravimetric analysis
In view of the high dielectric constant of magnetic nanoparticles, this paper intends to use it as a new type of microwave absorbing medium to accelerate the microwave pyrolysis process of oily sludge. Microwave thermogravimetric reaction and pyrolysis product staged collection devices were established, respectively. The main stage of pyrolysis process of oily sludge was divided based on the thermogravimetric experiments. Mechanism was studied through the characteristics of pyrolysis products and reaction kinetics simulation. Experimental results showed that the addition of magnetic ZnFe2O4 particle did not change the microwave pyrolysis process of oily sludge and the pyrolysis efficiency could be improved. Pyrolysis process was divided into three stages, rapid heating and water evaporation stage (20~150 °C), light component evaporation stage (150~240 °C) and heavy component cracking stage (240~300 °C). Due to the addition of magnetic ZnFe2O4 particles, the content of C4~C12 increased... [more]

Effective Inhibition of Carbon Steel Corrosion by Waterborne Polyurethane Based on N-tert-Butyl Diethanolamine in 2M HCl: Experimental and Computational Findings
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: acid corrosion, carbon steel, corrosion inhibition, density functional theory, dual-functional inhibitors, waterborne polyurethanes
The efficiency of corrosion inhibition for waterborne polyurethane based on N-tert-butyl diethanolamine (tB-WPU) is investigated using different techniques. Corrosion weight loss, open circuit potential experiments, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and potentiodynamic polarization measurements show that both a commercial reagent and a polyurethane-based inhibitor prevent corrosion at increasing temperature to 50 °C. At 75 °C, the activity of both reagents is reduced. In stirring conditions, the effectiveness of acid corrosion inhibition (25 °C, 500 ppm) drops abruptly from 89.5% to 60.7%, which is related presumably to the complexity of binding the polymer molecules to the metal surface. As follows from thermodynamic calculations, the adsorption of tB-WPU on the metal surface in 2M HCl can be treated as a physisorption. Model quantum−chemical calculations support the experimental studies and elucidate the nature of steel surface−inhibitor molecule chemical bond, which is realize... [more]

Study on Combustion Characteristics of Cable Based on Cone Calorimeter
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cable, cone calorimeter, HRR, ignition time, XLPE
Cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) carries a high fire risk. In this paper, a cone calorimeter is used to carry out radiation ignition experiments, and the heat release rate (HRR), mass loss rate (MLR) and other combustion parameters of XLPE cables under three kinds of radiation intensity are measured. By comparing the ignition time and HRR of samples under different conditions, the following conclusions are drawn: (1) The ignition time of XLPE cables decreases significantly with the increase in external thermal radiation intensity. The critical ignition heat flux (CHF) is about 16.24 kW/m2. (2) The HRR curve of XLPE is consistent with the characteristics of hot, thick material. The HRR rises rapidly to the first peak after ignition and then rapidly decreases. Then, it slowly rises to the second peak. Finally, it slowly decays until the combustion stops. (3) The first peak values of HRR of XLPE under different radiation intensities are almost the same. The time for the second peak of HRR... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: acid washing, biomass fuel, high heating value, hydrothermal carbonization, waste straw
To enhance the hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) process on biomass waste and improve the quality of biomass solid fuel. Corn straw was pretreated with acid washing and subsequently hydrothermally carbonized at 180−270 °C. The solid product obtained (hydrochars) was compared with the solid product produced from untreated hydrothermally carbonized straw. The results show that the acid pretreatment removed 7.9% of the ash from the straw. ICP and XRD analysis show that most of the alkali and alkaline earth metals have been removed. This addresses the defect of high ash content as the HTC temperature increases. The HHV of hydrochars produced by HTC after acid washing can reach 27.7 MJ/kg, which is nearly 10% higher than that of hydrochars prepared without acid washing pretreatment, and nearly 70% higher than that of straw raw materials. Elemental analysis and FTIR analysis show that the acid washing pretreatment changed the content and structure of the biomass components in the straw, resul... [more]
