Advantage of a Thermoelectric Generator with Hybridization of Segmented Materials and Irregularly Variable Cross-Section Design
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Genetic Algorithm, irregularly variable cross-section, Optimization, segmented material, thermoelectric generator, waste heat recovery
As a direct energy converter between heat and electricity, thermoelectric generators (TEGs) have potential applications including recovery of waste heat, and solar thermoelectric power generation. Geometric parameter and material are two critical factors to improve the TEG performance. However, the strategies base on structure design and material development are always separated. There are limited studies on the effects of consolidating them simultaneously. Here, an idea of segmented material coupled with irregularly variable cross-section design was conceived to further improve the TEG output power. The performance of TEGs with rectangular leg, segmented leg, variable cross-sectional leg, and the new design are compared. The coupling effects between various mechanisms are revealed, which are responsible for the superior performance provided by the developed design. Based on this knowledge, a multiparameters optimization was performed through the genetic algorithm to reach the optimal... [more]

RuCo Alloy Nanoparticles Embedded into N-Doped Carbon for High Efficiency Hydrogen Evolution Electrocatalyst
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: electrocatalysis, hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), hydrogen production, RuCo alloy, water splitting
For large-scale and sustainable water electrolysis, it is of great significance to develop cheap and efficient electrocatalysts that can replace platinum. Currently, it is difficult for most catalysts to combine high activity and stability. To solve this problem, we use cobalt to regulate the electronic structure of ruthenium to achieve high activity, and use carbon matrix to protect alloy nanoparticles to achieve high stability. Herein, based on the zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), a novel hybrid composed of RuCo alloy nano-particles and N-doped carbon was prepared via a facile pyrolysis-displacement-sintering strategy. Due to the unique porous structure and multi-component synergy, the optimal RuCo500@NC750 material in both acidic and alkaline media exhibited eminent HER catalytic activity. Notably, the 3-RuCo500@NC750 obtained a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at 22 mV and 31 mV in 0.5 M H2SO4 and 1.0 M KOH, respectively, comparable to that of the reference Pt/C catalyst. Furth... [more]

Impact of the KKL Correlation Model on the Activation of Thermal Energy for the Hybrid Nanofluid (GO+ZnO+Water) Flow through Permeable Vertically Rotating Surface
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: HAM, hybrid nanofluids, magnetic field, nonlinear thermal radiations, porous surface
The thermal energy transfer characteristics during hybrid nanofluid migration are studied in the presence of a variable magnetic field, heat source, and radiation. The flow is governed by the conservation laws of mass, momentum, and energy, whereas it is modeled by the coupled set of nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs). Suitable similarity transformations are employed to convert the developed set of PDEs to a nonlinear system of coupled ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The simplified system of ODEs is solved by using the well-established analytical procedure of homotopy analysis method (HAM). The effects of varying the strength of the physical parameters on the thermal energy transfer during hybrid nanofluid motion between two plates in which one of the plate is porous, rotating, as well as stretching are investigated through tables and two-dimensional graphs. The porosity is modeled through the Koo−Kleinstreuer model (KKL) correlation. The analysis reveals that the... [more]

An Improved Approach to Calculate Eddy Current Loss in Soft Magnetic Materials Based on Measured Hysteresis Loops
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: eddy current loss, eddy currents, energy loss, hysteresis loop, soft magnetic materials
The paper presents a study of the influence of magnetic hysteresis on macroscopic eddy current losses. Usually, this loss is calculated within many simplifying assumptions, of which the most striking is not only neglecting the hysteresis, but also the nonlinearity of the material. To check how such simplifications affect the results, the loss was calculated taking into account the hysteresis phenomenon for several materials. For this purpose, an algorithm for solving Maxwell’s equations with magnetic characteristics given as a family of measured hysteresis loops was constructed. A new method for conversion between H and B fields using the measured hysteresis loops was also proposed. The results of calculations for three materials show that the eddy current loss calculated with magnetic hysteresis taken into account are smaller than those calculated via the classical formula obtained for linear materials. For the tested materials, the differences reach up to around 30%, depending on fre... [more]

Effect of High-Rate Cycle Aging and Over-Discharge on NCM811 (LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2) Batteries
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cyclic aging, lithium-ion battery, material analysis, over-discharge, thermal safety
Inconsistencies in a monomer battery pack can lead to the over-discharge of a single battery. Although deep over-discharge can be avoided by optimizing the battery control system, slight over-discharge still often occurs in the battery pack. The aging behavior of cylindrical NCM811 batteries under high-rate aging and over-discharge was studied. By setting the end-of-discharge of 1 V, the battery capacity rapidly decayed after 130 cycles. Additionally, the temperature sharply increased in the over-discharge stage. The micro short-circuit was found by the discharge voltage curve and impedance spectrum. Batteries with 100%, 79.6% and 50.9% SOH (state of health = Q_now/Q_new × 100%) as a result of high-rate aging and over-discharging were subjected to thermal testing in an adiabatic environment. The battery without high-rate aging and over-discharge did not experience thermal runaway. However, severe thermal runaway occurred in the 79.6% and 50.9% SOH batteries. Regarding the cyclic aging... Subject: Materials
Keywords: catalyst support, enhancement, recyclability, renewable diesel, stability
High energy demand from the market due to the rapid increment of the human population worldwide has urged society to explore alternatives to replace non-renewable energy. Renewable diesel produced from biomass could be the next potential energy source for its high stability, long-term storage, and comparable performance with diesel fuels. In producing renewable diesel, the application of catalyst is essential, and the catalyst support is synthesized with the catalyst to enhance the reaction rate and catalytic properties. In this review, the type of catalyst support will be reviewed along with a brief introduction to biodiesel and renewable diesel production, especially focusing on zeolites as the catalyst support. The enhancement of catalyst support will be critically discussed to improve the catalytic performance of support in renewable diesel production and important aspects such as the stability and recyclability of the supported catalyst are included. Applicability Assessment of Viscoelastic Surfactants and Synthetic Polymers as a Base of Hydraulic Fracturing Fluids
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: breaker, clay swelling, crosslinker, guar gum, hydraulic fracturing, oscillatory rheology, polyacrylamide (PAM), rotational viscometry, viscoelastic surfactant
Hydraulic fracturing (HF) is currently the most widespread and effective method of oil production stimulation. The most commonly used fracturing fluid is crosslinked guar gels. However, when using these systems, problems such as clogging of the pore space, cracking, and proppant packing with the remains of the undestroyed polymer arise. Therefore, the efficiency of the hydraulic fracturing process decreases. In this work, compositions based on viscoelastic surfactants (VES) and synthetic polymers (SP) were considered as alternatives capable of minimizing these disadvantages. Most often, the possibility of using a composition as a fracturing fluid is evaluated using rotational viscometry. However, rotational viscometry is not capable of fully assessing the structural and mechanical properties of fracturing fluid. This leads to a reduced spread of systems based on VES and SP. This paper proposes an integrated approach to assessing the effectiveness of a water-based fracturing fluid. The... [more]

The aim of the work was to prepare and test a paper-oil insulation system according to the recommendations of CIGRE (Conseil International des Grands Réseaux Électriques) with the parameters X = 50% and Y = 30%. Pressboard was moistened to a water content of (5.0 ± 0.2) wt.% The loss tangent was measured using a DIRANA meter (FDS-PDC dielectric response analyzer) in the frequency range 10−4 Hz−5000 Hz for 6 temperatures from 293.15 K to 333.15 K with a step of 8 K. The waveforms simulated by the DIRANA software were fitted to the experimental dependence of the loss tangent. The fitting process was performed using two methods. In the first method, the measuring temperature value as well as X and Y values were entered into the software. The estimated moisture content of the insulation varied from about 1.4 to about 5.2 wt.%. The average value of moisture content was (3.73 ± 1.11) wt.%. In the second method, only the measuring temperature value was entered into the software. This improved... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: MFU, multi-scale fractal permeability model, pore structure distribution
Permeability in porous media has an important role in many engineering applications, which depends mainly on the pore size, distribution, and connectivity of porous media. As the pore structure distribution of coal has a multi-scale fractal dimension characteristic, this study aimed to propose a multi-scale fractal dimension characteristics units model (MFU) to describe the pore structure distribution by analyzing the multi-scale fractal dimension characteristics of coal pore media. Then, a multi-scale fractal permeability model was established based on MFU. The pore structure distribution was obtained by mercury injection porosimetry (MIP) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments. Based on MIP and NMR experimental data, the permeability contribution of different pore diameters were calculated. The results show that the permeability contribution of the micropore was minimal and can be ignored. The permeability contribution of mesopores was about 1−5%, and the permeability contr... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: analytical techniques, electrolyte, flame ionization detector (FID), lithium-ion batteries, mass spectrometry (MS), two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC)
In this work, two methods were investigated for determining the composition of carbonate solvent systems used in lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery electrolytes. One method was based on comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with electron ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC/EI TOF MS), which often enables unknown compound identification by their electron ionization (EI) mass spectra. The other method was based on comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC×GC/FID). Both methods were used to determine the concentrations of six different commonly used carbonates in Li-ion battery electrolytes (i.e., ethylene carbonate (EC), propylene carbonate (PC), dimethyl carbonate (DMC), diethyl carbonate (DEC), ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC), and vinylene carbonate (VC) in model compound mixtures (MCMs), single-blind samples (SBS), and a commercially obtained electrolyte solution (COES). Subject: Materials
Keywords: polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, polychlorinated dibenzofurans, solid refused fuel, stack, waste heat boiler
Incineration plants using solid refused fuel (SRF) should control their air pollution materials to minimize environmental impact. This study evaluated the emission of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin/dibenzofurans (PCDD/DFs) congener patterns in seven commercial incineration plants in Korea using SRF and biomass SRF (bio-SRF). We examined the reduction rate differences of PCDD/DFs, depending on the air pollutant control device. All seven incineration plants sufficiently managed their dioxin emissions. However, both SRF and bio-SRF incineration plants showed active chlorination reactions and resulted in a large amount of highly chlorinated dioxins. Experimental Assessment of the Thermal Conductivity of Basalt Fibres at High Temperatures
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: basalt fibre, district heat network, heat losses, thermal conductivity, thermal insulation, thermogravimetry
This paper investigates fibrous thermal insulation materials of various densities to assess the change in their thermophysical properties at high temperatures. The thermal conductivity of fibrous thermal insulation materials is discussed as a function of the temperature in the range from 50 °C to 500 °C. It is shown that the thermal insulating properties depend not only on the physical properties of the material (e.g., density or diameter of fibres), but also on the geometric parameters of the structure and on the orientation of the fibres. The influence of high temperatures on the mass change of fibrous materials associated with the burnout of synthetic binders is shown. These features should be taken into account during the design of thermal insulation operating at high temperatures to provide the optimal selection of the material and to guarantee the stability of their thermal properties.

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: ANSYS, FEM, ferromagnetic side plates, magnetic blow-out force, MCB
The paper presents a modern method of computer modeling, concerning the low-voltage extinguishing chambers employed in modular apparatuses. The focus was put on presenting the phenomenon of increasing the blow-out, through the use of ferromagnetic plates, dividing the electric arc inside the electrical apparatus. The use of ferromagnetic material for the production of extinguishing chambers results in the distortion of the magnetic field generated by the electric arc. This creates a magnetic force that draws the arc towards the plate area of the extinguishing chamber. The authors presented a modern tool for the analysis of physical phenomena inside the extinguishing chamber. The presented material makes it possible to examine the influence of changes in the geometry and materials of the mentioned components on the process of switching off the current. The applied approach can be used to analyze physical phenomena in devices, not only for alternating current, but also for direct current... [more]

Influence of Hblock Fine-Grained Material on Selected Parameters of Cement Slurry
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: borehole sealing efficiency, cement slurry, fine-grained material, technological parameters
Fine-grained materials are used to seal the microstructure and improve the mechanical parameters of the formed cement sheath. They are used in cement slurries designed to seal casing columns at great depths and in geothermal boreholes to improve thermal conductivity. Such additions shorten the setting time and the transition time from the value of the initial time of the setting to the final of the setting. This allows the shortening of the time needed to bind the slurry and move on to further work. Additionally, it helps to eliminate the possibility of gaseous medium intrusion into the structure of the setting cement slurry. The goal of the work is to determine the influence of the Hblock fine-grained material on selected parameters of the cement slurry. Hblock is used in the research ranging from 1% to 20% (bwoc (bwoc—by weight of cement)), and the two types of cement most commonly used in the petroleum sector. Subject: Materials
Keywords: heat transfer and fluid flow coupling, Latent Heat Storage, natural convection, numerical simulation, phase change materials, solid-liquid phase change
For the numerical simulation of a heat storage based on phase change materials (PCMs) an enhanced model is presented, considering the physical effects of convection flow in the liquid phase as well as the volume change during phase change. A modified heat capacity is used to realize the phase change. The phase change material is initially defined as a liquid with temperature-dependent material properties. A volume force is added to the Navier-Stokes equations to allow a circulating flow field in the liquid phase and prevent flow motion in the solid phase. The volume change is implemented with the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian method. A laboratory phase change experiment was performed using the PCM RT42 with a melting temperature of 42 °C. The laboratory experiment was calculated numerically using the enhanced model to evaluate the numerical model and to investigate the influence of the simulation parameters on the thermal behavior of the PCM. Corrosion of Heat Transfer Materials by Potassium-Contaminated Ilmenite Bed Particles in Chemical-Looping Combustion of Biomass
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: chemical looping combustion, corrosion, heat transfer, ilmenite
This study discusses the potential corrosion of boiler materials in chemical-looping combustion (CLC) of biomass. The CLC of biomass has the potential to negative CO2 emission in heat and power production. Biomass fuels, however, typically contain compounds of alkali metals, especially potassium and chloride, which may lead to the corrosion of heat-transfer surfaces in the reactors. The influence of potassium-contaminated ilmenite bed material deposits on the corrosion of seven heat transfer materials used in the air and fuel reactors in CLC was studied using one-week lab-scale experiments. Samples with KCl and without any deposit were used as references. After the exposure, the cross-sectional surfaces of the metals were analyzed with SEM/EDX. The results suggested that potassium-contaminated ilmenite might lead to minor corrosion of all studied materials under the oxidizing conditions simulating the air reactor, i.e., 700 °C and dry air. Current Trends in Waste Plastics’ Liquefaction into Fuel Fraction: A Review

Subject: Materials
Keywords: fuels, liquefaction, plastic waste, quality standards
Polymers and plastics are crucial materials in many sectors of our economy, due to their numerous advantages. They also have some disadvantages, among the most important are problems with the recycling and disposal of used plastics. The recovery of waste plastics is increasing every year, but over 27% of plastics are landfilled. The rest is recycled, where, unfortunately, incineration is still the most common management method. From an economic perspective, waste management methods that lead to added-value products are most preferred—as in the case of material and chemical recycling. Since chemical recycling can be used for difficult wastes (poorly selected, contaminated), it seems to be the most effective way of managing these materials. Moreover, as a result this of kind of recycling, it is possible to obtain commercially valuable products, such as fractions for fuel composition and monomers for the reproduction of polymers. The prosperity of intelligent wearables brings an increasingly critical problem of power supply. Regular rechargeable lithium or disposable button batteries have some problems, such as limited capacity, frequent replacement, environmental pollution, etc. Wearable energy harvester (WEH) can fundamentally solve these problems. Among WEHs, thermoelectric generator (TEG) is a promising option due to its independence of light condition or the motion of the wearer, and thermoelectric conversion (TEC) has the characteristics of quietness and continuity. Therefore, TEG has become a suitable choice for harvesting low-grade heat energy such as human body heat. Ionic thermoelectric gel (iTEG) has the advantages of a large Seebeck coefficient, freely defined shape and size, low processing cost, wide material sources, easy encapsulation, etc. In this paper, the gelatin-based iTEG is regulated and optimized by silica nanoparticles (SiO2 NPs). The high latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) potential of phase change materials (PCMs) has long promised a step-change in the energy density for thermal storage applications. However, the uptake of PCM systems has been limited due to their relatively slow charging response, limited life, and economic considerations. Fortunately, a concerted global research effort is now underway to remove these remaining technical challenges. The bibliometric analysis of this review reveals that a major focus is now on the development of nano-enhanced phase change materials (NePCM), which have the potential to mitigate many of these technical challenges for PCM-based thermal energy storage systems. As such, our bibliometric analysis has zeroed in on research in the field of thermal energy storage using NePCMs since 1977. Subject: Materials
Keywords: inhibition, Kohat Basin, Murree Formation, rheology, water-based mud, wellbore instability
Drilling fluids with subtle filtration and rheological characteristics are essential to optimize the functioning of oil and gas well drills. The Early Miocene Murree Formation in the Kohat Basin of Pakistan is generally referred to as the Murree Clays. When mixed with water-base drilling mud, ultra-fine particles of the Murree Formation tend to eradicate default fluid rheological properties and result in wellbore instabilities during drilling in that area. To obtain the optimized mud to deliver the drilling operation efficiently, we aimed to mitigate the impact of Murree clay on the drilling mud. We analyzed the drilling mud to observe the effects of the mud additive on clays on the basis of the samples from the Murree Clays. On the basis of the experimental tests, we observed that the rheological properties of mud significantly improved in the presence of KCl. KCl prevented the smectite group swelling inclinations and reduced rheological values to 25%, 33.3%, 48.6%, and 65.2%. The pla... [more]
