Characteristics and Affecting Factors of K2qn1 Member Shale Oil Reservoir in Southern Songliao Basin, China
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: affecting factor, Da’an area, K2qn1 member, reservoir characteristics, shale oil, southern Songliao Basin, sweet spot section
Member 1 of the Cretaceous Qingshankou Formation (K2qn1 Member) in the Southern Songliao Basin, composed of mainly semi-deep and deep lacustrine shale layers, is rich in shale oil. Previous studies on shale reservoir characteristics mainly focused on marine shale strata, but few studies have considered lacustrine shale strata, so the pore-throat features and differences between the lacustrine shale reservoir and marine shale reservoir need to be studied. Taking the Class-I and II sweet spot sections and Class-III non-sweet spot section of Da’an shale oil demonstration area as examples, SEM (scanning electron microscopy) was used to qualitatively and semi-quantitatively describe the morphology and occurrence characteristics of the shale. Full-scale pore size distributions of lacustrine shale samples were quantitatively measured by N2GA (nitrogen absorption) combined with dominant pore size segments tested by experiments. Finally, the lacustrine shale reservoir was compared with classica... [more]

A Comprehensive Review on the Prospects of Using Hydrogen−Methane Blends: Challenges and Opportunities
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: energy applications, hydro-methane, Hydrogen, hydrogen/methane blends, low-carbon fuel, methane
An analysis of the literature data indicates a wide front of research and development in the field of the use of methane−hydrogen mixtures as a promising environmentally friendly low-carbon fuel. The conclusion of most works shows that the use of methane−hydrogen mixtures in internal combustion engines improves their performance and emission characteristics. The most important aspect is the concentration of hydrogen in the fuel mixture, which affects the combustion process of the fuel and determines the optimal operating conditions of the engine. When using methane−hydrogen mixtures with low hydrogen content, the safety measures and risks are similar to those that exist when working with natural gas. Serious logistical problems are associated with the difficulties of using the existing gas distribution infrastructure for transporting methane−hydrogen mixtures. It is possible that, despite the need for huge investments, it will be necessary to create a new infrastructure for the product... [more]

Calorimetric Evaluation of Thermal Stability of Organic Liquid Hydrogen Storage Materials and Metal Oxide Additives
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: metal oxide catalyst, N-Ethylcarbazole, organic liquid hydrogen storage, thermal decomposition
The effects of two different metal oxide catalysts, SnO and Li2O, on the dehydrogenation temperature of Carbazole and N-Ethylcarbazole (NE), respectively, were investigated by the Thermogravimetric analyzer and Differential Scanning Calorimetry. Thermogravimetric experiments were performed with 10wt% SnO and Li2O added to Carbazole and N-Ethylcarbazole, respectively, and compared to pure Carbazole and N-Ethylcarbazole. The results showed that the dehydrogenation temperature of N-Ethylcarbazole was lower than that of Carbazole, and the dehydrogenation temperature of N-Ethylcarbazole +SnO was the lowest, and SnO is an ideal dehydrogenation catalyst for N-Ethylcarbazole. Experiments using Differential Scanning Calorimetry and a Thermogravimetric analyzer showed that with the addition of catalyst, the activation energy of the mixture was more significant and stable, and the thermal hazard was reduced, whereas the relative dehydrogenation temperature was increased. Flashover Voltage of Epoxy FRP Insulators with Different Surface Roughness and Groove under Nanosecond Pulses in SF6
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: EMP simulator, flashover, FRP materials, grooves, SEEY, surface roughness
In order to further improve the insulation performance of fiber reinforce plastic (FRP) materials used in electromagnetic pulse (EMP) simulators, the flashover characteristics of FRP materials with different surface roughness and groove, i.e., those who are easily achieved and have a prominent effect, are investigated in 0.1 MPa SF6 under nanosecond pulse voltage with a rise time of 20−30 ns. The experimental results show that surfaces with different roughness have no significant influence on the flashover voltages of the FRP insulators, and both the convex grooves made of FRP and the convex grooves with nylon rings inlaid to form projections can improve the surface flashover voltage of epoxy FRP insulators under nanosecond pulse, in which the effect of the former surface is more obvious. For the insulators with convex grooves made of FRP, it is found that the root of the FRP protrusions breaks down after a number of shots with the occurrence of carbonization channels and spots, which... Effects of Pre-Crosslinking on Space Charge and Breakdown Characteristics of XLPE Cable Insulation
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: breakdown strength, HVDC cable, space charge, XLPE insulation
This study focused on the effect of pre-crosslinking on the electrical properties of XLPE insulation for HVDC cables. The XLPE samples were pre-crosslinked at 140, 150 and 160 °C. The space charge and DC breakdown characteristics of the XLPE samples with and without pre-crosslinking were investigated. The results show that the pre-crosslinked XLPE samples have an obvious space charge injection and transportation, resulting in more severe electric field distortion. Under the electric field of 100 kV/mm, the electric field distortion rates of the XLPE samples pre-crosslinked at 150 and 160 °C reached 51% and 72% respectively, which were much higher than that of the XLPE sample without pre-crosslinking (14%.) Compared with the XLPE without pre-crosslinking, the breakdown strengths of XLPE pre-crosslinked at 140, 150 and 160 °C were reduced by 11%, 6% and 7% respectively, at the temperature of 50 °C. It is concluded that the pre-crosslinking leads to imperfect crystallization and micro-def... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: capacitance characteristics, electrode plate, graphene, inductance characteristics, least-square, partial discharge sensor, resistance characteristics
Partial discharge (PD) sensors have been widely used in PD detection of power equipment. In order to adapt to the development of the new power system, the new PD sensor should not only have a wide response band but also have a large dynamic range. PD measurement devices currently used in smart grids are mainly based on traditional metal materials, which face difficulty in fully meeting these technical requirements. Graphene has a variety of excellent properties, and it is introduced to improve PD sensor materials in this paper. Based on the transmission line model, the circuit parameters of graphene PD sensor electrode plate material are theoretically derived. Various factors affecting its resistance characteristics, inductance characteristics, and capacitance characteristics are analyzed. Next, the variation curves of circuit parameters under different influencing factors are obtained. Linear regression models based on the least-square method were developed for circuit parameters. Thermochromic Materials as Passive Roof Technology: Their Impact on Building Energy Performance
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Absorption, color, Energy Efficiency, reflection, roof coating, surface temperature, thermochromic
Over the last few years, new materials have been developed which a priori, appear to improve passive energy efficiency in buildings. This article focuses on chromogenic devices that allow changing their optical properties in a reversible manner through some external stimulus. The covering of the envelopes may have different textures or colors, which determine the amount of solar radiation absorbed by the material compared to the incident radiation. In buildings with a high percentage of roof relative to façade, the surface finish plays an interesting role in the energy demand. In the present work, the influence of the application of thermochromic materials to the roofs of commercial buildings is analyzed. It has been demonstrated that the application of a thermochromic surface finish can produce savings of annual energy demand between 1% and 12% in kilowatt-hours and kilograms of CO2 and they become more significant for construction solutions with higher transmittances values. Solidified-Air Energy Storage: Conceptualization and Thermodynamic Analysis
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: air clathrate hydrate, air energy storage, electrical energy storage, thermal energy storage
Grid-scale electrical energy storage (EES) is a key component in cost-effective transition scenarios to renewable energy sources. The requirement of scalability favors EES approaches such as pumped-storage hydroelectricity (PSH) or compressed-air energy storage (CAES), which utilize the cheap and abundant storage materials water and air, respectively. To overcome the site restriction and low volumetric energy densities attributed to PSH and CAES, liquid-air energy storage (LAES) has been devised; however, it suffers from a rather small round-trip efficiency (RTE) and challenging storage conditions. Aiming to overcome these drawbacks, a novel system for EES is developed using solidified air (i.e., clathrate hydrate of air) as the storable phase of air. A reference plant for solidified-air energy storage (SAES) is conceptualized and modeled thermodynamically using the software CoolProp for water and air as well as empirical data and first-order approximations for the solidified air (SA).... Technical and Economic Analysis of the Implementation of a Self-Sustainable Briquetting Process for Electric Generation
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: briquettes, economic feasibility, wood residues
The wood industry is an essential part of the economy of some regions in Brazil. Although the excess of wood residue is an environmental concern, it is also an alternative source for electricity generation. This allows for compliance with current legislation to minimize environmental impacts such as strategies to control the emission of pollutants and the decarbonization in the wood exploration activity. Despite this, the thermoelectric plants based on wood residues face problems associated with the low efficiency in generation due to the high moisture content of the residues, and challenges related to transport and storage. In this sense, this work is to evaluate the application of a self-sustainable briquetting plant as an alternative for solving the problems associated with the high moisture content, transport, and storage of wood residues. The aspects related to the construction of the briquetting plant and economic indicators associated with the economic feasibility, such as, the... [more]

Sr Substituted La2−xSrNi0.8Co0.2O4+δ (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.8): Impact on Oxygen Stoichiometry and Electrochemical Properties
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: chemical stability, electrochemical performance, nickelates, oxygen over stoichiometry, SOECs, SOFCs
Lanthanide nickelate Ln2NiO4+δ (Ln = La, Pr, or Nd) based mixed ionic and electronic conducting (MIEC) materials have drawn significant attention as an alternative oxygen electrode for solid oxide cells (SOCs). These nickelates show very high oxygen diffusion coefficient (D*) and surface exchange coefficient (k*) values and hence exhibit good electrocatalytic activity. Earlier reported results show that the partial substitution of Co2+ at B-site in La2Ni1−xCoO4+δ (LNCO) leads to an enhancement in the transport and electrochemical properties of the material. Herein, we perform the substitution at A-site with Sr, i.e., La2−xSrNi0.8Co0.2O4+δ, in order to further investigate the structural, physicochemical, and electrochemical properties. The structural characterization of the synthesized powders reveals a decrease in the lattice parameters as well as lattice volume with increasing Sr content. Furthermore, a decrease in the oxygen over stoichiometry is also observed with Sr substitution. T... [more]

Quest for the Co-Pyrolysis Behavior of Rice Husk and Cresol Distillation Residue: Interaction, Gas Evolution and Kinetics
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: co-pyrolysis, cresol distillation residue, kinetics, rice husk, TG-MS
With the tremendous prosperity of industry, more and more hazardous waste is discharged from industrial production processes. Cresol distillation residue is a typical industrial hazardous waste that causes severe pollution without proper treatment. Herein, the co-pyrolysis of rice husk and cresol distillation residue was studied using thermogravimetry−mass spectrometry and kinetic studies. The Coats and Redfern method was employed to calculate the activation energy. The results indicated that the pyrolysis process of cresol distillation residue and RH/CDR (Rice Husk and Cresol Distillation Residue) blends can be divided into four stages and three stages for RH. The introduction of RH not only improved the thermo-stability of cresol distillation residue at a low temperature but also reduced the activation energy of the blends. The activation energy was the lowest when the proportion of rice husk in the blend was 60%. The main gaseous pyrolysis products included CH4, H2O, C2H2, CO2, C3H6... [more]

In this work, chemical recycling as an alternative to conventional end-of-life treatments was studied. Two different types of end-of-life tires (ELT), truck tires and mix tires (50:50 mixture of passenger car and truck tires), were pyrolyzed in a batch microwave reactor. The influence of specific power (10, 20, and 30 W/g) on mass distribution was analyzed. The maximum liquid yield was attained at 10 W/g, while the maximum gas yield is obtained at 30 W/g. Liquid fractions were characterized by gas chromatography/quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC/qMS) to identify the main components, and major compounds were quantified. In all samples, limonene (3.76 ± 0.31−6.80 ± 2.37 wt. %) and BTEX (3.83 ± 0.20−1.19 ± 2.80 wt. %) were the main components. Major limonene concentration is obtained in oil produced from truck ELT while higher yields of aromatic compounds are obtained from mix ELT. Thermal and Mechanical Characterisation of Sandwich Core Materials for Climatic Chamber Shells Subjected to High Temperatures
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: elastic modulus, impulse excitation technique, sandwich panel, specific heat, thermal conductivity, Young’s modulus
Climatic chamber testing conditions are becoming more demanding. A wide range of temperatures is used to check the quality of products and materials, since they are constantly being improved. However, there is no literature on how the components of the climatic chamber panels react under high temperatures. The present work therefore sets out to perform a thermal and mechanical characterisation of four core materials often used in sandwich panels: balsa wood, mineral wool, and polyethylene terephthalate and polyurethane rigid foams. The thermal characterisation focused on thermal conductivity and the specific heat was characterised using an indirect method developed previously by the authors to simulate a real application scenario where one surface of the sandwich panels was subjected to high temperature, while the opposite surface was kept at room temperature. Steady and unsteady conditions were analysed up to 200 °C. Balsa and mineral wool exhibited a nonlinear increase in thermal con... [more]

Multi-Parameter Protocol for Geocryological Test Site: A Case Study Applied for the European North of Russia
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Arctic coastline, climate change, electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), ground temperature, monitoring, permafrost degradation, tundra area
An increase in air temperature leads to a significant transformation of the relief and landscapes of the Arctic. The rate of permafrost degradation, posing a profound change in the Arctic landscape, depends on air temperature, vegetation cover, type of soils, surface and ground waters. The existing international circumpolar programs dedicated to monitoring the temperature state of permafrost TSP (Thermal State Permafrost) and active layer thickness CALM (Circumpolar Active Layer Monitoring) are not sufficient for a comprehensive characterization of geocryological conditions. Yet, no standardized protocol exists for permafrost monitoring and related processes. Here, we propose a novel multi-parameter monitoring protocol and implement it for two sites in the European part of the Russian Arctic: the Yary site along the coast of the Baydaratskaya Bay in the Kara Sea (68.9° N) within the continuous permafrost area and the Hanovey site in the Komi Republic (67.3° N) within the discontinuous... Fractional Composition Analysis for Upgrading of Fast Pyrolysis Bio-Oil Produced from Sawdust
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: fast pyrolysis bio-oil (FPBO), gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC-TOF/MS), liquid-liquid extraction, multi-step separation
We can prevent climate change by reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by fossil fuel usage through introducing alternative fuels such as bio-oil. The fast pyrolysis process used for wood materials has recently gained substantial attention as an approach to produce bio-oil worldwide and in Korea as well. Bio-oil from fast pyrolysis contains highly oxygenated compounds and phenolics, thereby requiring upgrading processes, such as deoxygenation and condensation, for high-end use. To determine an efficient upgrading method for fast pyrolysis bio-oil (FPBO), one needs to elucidate its composition and classify it into chemical groups. We analyzed the composition of fractionized FPBO toward high-end use. FPBO was separated into two layers by adding distilled water: (a) the water-soluble phase, and (b) the oil phase, whereas liquid-liquid extraction and multi-step separation were applied for fractionization, respectively. The fractions were obtained, and their chemical groups were an... [more]

Time Evolution of Partial Discharges in a Dielectric Subjected to the DC Periodic Voltage
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: DC, direct current periodic (DCP), HVDC, partial discharge (PD), partial discharge measurements
Partial discharge (PD) detection can be considered one of the most useful tools for assessing the insulation conditions of the power apparatus in high-voltage systems. Under AC conditions, this analysis is widely employed in online and offline tests, such as type tests or commissioning, and can be carried out by applying the phase-resolved PD (PRPD) method, since the patterns can give information about the defect classification. Under DC voltages, the classic pattern recognition method cannot be performed, and the measurements show complexities related to the nature of the phenomena. For this reason, to date, a standard for PD measurements under DC does not exist. In previous papers, a new method for PD detection under DC stress voltages has been proposed by the authors. It is based on the application of a direct current periodic (DCP) waveform useful in obtaining PRPD patterns. Pore-Scale Flow Fields of the Viscosity-Lost Partially Hydrolyzed Polyacrylamide Solution Caused by Sulfide Ion
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: elasticity loss, Micro-PIV, partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide, sulfide ion, viscosity loss
The rheology of a partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) solution plays an important role in its oil recovery during polymer flooding. However, multiple factors in brine, such as sulfide ions, cause a dramatic loss in the viscosity and oil recovery. To better understand the sulfide-induced viscosity loss and the consequent flow mechanisms in pore networks, the morphology of polymer solutions with and without sulfide ion was observed by scanning electron microscopy; and the variations of the pore scale flow fields were demonstrated by a microscopic visualization seepage experiment combined with Micro-PIV (Microscale Particle Image Velocimetry). The results showed that, with the presence of sulfide ion, the microstructure of the polymer changed from a uniform three-dimensional network structure to loose and uneven floccules, which resulted in viscosity loss (over 70% with 5-mg/L sulfide ion). Moreover, higher concentrations of sulfide ions (5 mg/L and 10 mg/L) resulted in earlier she... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: fluid distribution, fractal geometric parameters, pore scale imaging, two phase flow, wettability
High resolution micro-computed tomography images for multiphase flow provide us an effective tool to understand the mechanism of fluid flow in porous media, which is not only fundamental to the understanding of macroscopic measurements but also for providing benchmark datasets to validate pore-scale modeling. In this study, we start from two datasets of pore scale imaging of two-phase flow obtained experimentally under in situ imaging conditions at different water fractional flows under water-wet and mixed-wet conditions. Then, fractal dimension, lacunarity and succolarity are used to quantify the complexity, clustering and flow capacity of water and oil phases. The results show that with the wettability of rock surface altered from water-wet to mixed-wet, the fractal dimension for the water phase increases while for the oil phase, it decreases obviously at low water saturation. Lacunarity largely depends on the degree of wettability alteration. The more uniform wetting surfaces are di... [more]

The Effect of Ash Silanization on the Selected Properties of Rigid Polyurethane Foam/Coal Fly Ash Composites
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: fly ash recycling, polyurethane composites, silanization
According to the assumptions of the European Union, by 2050 it is planned to achieve climate neutrality. For this purpose, a document called the “European Green Deal” was established, which is a set of policies of the European Commission. One of the assumptions is a circular economy that takes into account the use of waste in subsequent production cycles. In order to meet the latest trends in environmentally friendly materials and use of waste in the production of building materials, composites of rigid polyurethane foam with 10 wt.% of waste were produced. Fly ash from coal combustion after modification was used as a filler. Three types of modifications were used: silanization, sieving, and both processes together. The silanization process was carried out for 1 and 2% silane ([3-(2-aminoethylamino)propyl]trimethoxysilane) concentration in relation to the fly ash mass. The sieving was aimed at reaching a fraction with a particle diameter below 75 µm. Six composites with modified filler... [more]

Investigation of Mechanochemically Treated Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Fly Ash as Replacement for Cement
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: fly ash, heavy metals, mechanochemical treatment, PCDD/Fs
Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash has been classified as hazardous waste in China because of the leachable toxic heavy metals and high concentrations of chlorides and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). Currently, the main treatment method is still landfilling after chemical treatment or cement solidification, and an effective approach to realize fly ash utilization is still lacking. In the present work, the fly ash was firstly water-washed to remove the soluble chlorine salts, which can improve the performance of the produced cement mortar in later work. Mechanochemical pre-treatment was adopted to destroy the PCDD/Fs and improve the heavy metals’ stabilization. The results show that 75% of PCDD/Fs can be degraded and that most of the heavy metals are stabilized. After the mechanochemical pre-treatment, the average particle size of the fly ash decreases to 2−5 μm, which is beneficial for promoting the activation energy and acc... [more]

Keywords: 3D concrete printing, buildability, phase change concrete, printability, thermophysical properties
Three-dimensional (3D) printed concrete has recently received considerable research attention. In buildings, phase change materials (PCMs) with excellent thermoregulatory properties and thermal storage capacity can improve the insulation capacity of external walls and reduce energy consumption. In this study, microencapsulated paraffin was added to a 3D printable material and a 3D printed phase-change concrete was developed, resulting in good printability and buildability. The compressive and flexural strengths were declined maximally by 44.6% and 37.5%, respectively, with 20 wt% PCM mixed. Results from 3D printed room models proved the thermo-regulated performance by regulating the room temperature when mixed with 20 wt% PCM. With the addition of PCM, 3D printed facilities can have sufficient thermal comfort.
