Maria A. Vasileiadou, Georgia Altiparmaki, Konstantinos Moustakas, Stergios Vakalis
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: biowaste, hydrochar, thermochemical treatment, winery waste
Lesvos island has several food and beverage production industries and the valorization of their waste has been an unexplored task. The focus of this study is the valorization of wine sludge which is a very interesting waste stream due to the high phenolic content. This study identified all the operating wineries on the island and sampled local wine sludge. Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) was utilized for the valorization of wine sludge and the production of hydrochar and liquid HTC liquor. The experiments had a residence time of 24 h and were performed at 200 °C. Except the uniqueness of wine sludge as a utilized material, this study performed HTC under different pressure regimes that were developed by different filling percentages of the reactor, i.e., 24−48%. The different pressure regimes influenced the measured parameters of both the liquid and the solid products of HTC. The Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) ranged between 230 and 280 g/L with the maximum reduction was observed at a fi... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: carrier injection, cyclic reaction, gallium, half-bridge resonance circuit, kinetic model, light-induced degradation, module, p-type, PERC
The light-induced degradation (LID) phenomenon in solar cells reduces power generation output. Previously, a method was developed to prevent LID where a group III impurity that can replace boron is added to the silicon wafer. However, in a subsequent study, performance degradation was observed in gallium-doped solar wafers and cells, and a degradation pattern similar to that occurring in light and elevated temperature-induced degradation (LeTID) was reported. In this study, a 72-cell module was fabricated using gallium-doped PERC cells, and the treatment of the LID process for carrier injection in the range of 1 to 7 A at 130 °C was analyzed using kinetic theory. We selectively heated only the solar cells inside a 72-cell module using a half-bridge resonance circuit for remote heating. To monitor the treatment of LID process in real time, a custom multimeter manufactured using an ACS758 current sensor and a microcomputer was used. Least-squares curve fitting was performed on the measur... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Dongying Depression, Es4s member, excess pressure gradient, oil migration and accumulation, overpressure
Excess pressure is the main driving force of oil migration in the source-reservoir system of overpressured petroliferous basins. It can reflect the change in driving force for oil migration and its influence on oil accumulation in overpressure transport layers. The drilling stem test (DST) data, well logging data, and seismic velocity data are used to describe the plane distribution of the excess pressures in the Es4s member of the Dongying Depression. Then, the values and directions of the excess pressure gradient, which can indicate oil migration and accumulation, are calculated based on the plane distribution of the excess pressure in the Es4s member of the Dongying Depression. The results suggest that overpressure is widely developed in the Es4s member of the Dongying Depression, and the excess pressure gradually decreases from the center to the edge of each sag, while the variation in the excess pressure gradient is characterized by “low-high-low” in a circular band around the sag... February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: 40,000 h operating time, air interconnect interaction, fuel interconnect interaction, interconnect, materials characterization, SOFC, stack
An in-depth investigation was performed on a metallic interconnect extracted from an SOFC stack operated for 40,000 h. The characterization was performed on the surface and the cross-section, paying attention to the evolution of the materials due to the interaction with the dual atmosphere of the stack under operating parameters. The interaction between materials (i.e., metal substrate, coatings and atmospheres) and stack components (i.e., current collectors and MIC) generated several modifications that affected the surface and, in some cases, the bulk of the interconnect. The careful metallographic preparation allowed for the performance of an intensive microscopical characterization of the cross-sections all along the interconnect profile, from the inlet to the outlet of the fuel stream. The formation of thermal grown oxides on both sides and their evolution were studied and described. The interconnect, after 40,000 h, was still suitable for operation, but the few bulk changes due to... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: flow manufacturing system, power industry, split delivery, vehicle routing problem, waiting time, weighted customer waiting time
This paper introduces a new model of the customer-centric, two-product split delivery vehicle routing problem (CTSDVRP) in the context of a mixed-flow manufacturing system that occurs in the power industry. Different from the general VRP model, the unique characteristics of our model are: (1) two types of products are delivered, and the demand for them is interdependent and based on a bill of materials (BOM); (2) the paper considers a new aspect in customer satisfaction, i.e., the consideration of the production efficiency on the customer side. In our model, customer satisfaction is not measured by the actual customer waiting time, but by the weighted customer waiting time, which is based on the targeted service rate of the end products. We define the targeted service rate as the ratio of the quantity of the end product produced by the corresponding delivery quantities of the two products to the demand of the end product. We propose a hybrid ant colony-genetic optimization algorithm to... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: confining pressure, critical loading rate, loading rate, peak strength, presplitting
In order to explore the deformation and failure law of deep surrounding rock roadway disturbed by strong dynamic pressure, the triaxial mechanical properties of mudstone samples under pre-cracking damage conditions were tested to study the deformation and failure characteristics and energy evolution mechanism in the damage process, under different loading rates and confining pressures. In the mechanical experiment, the specimen is pre-cracked to simulate the damage and failure of surrounding rock during roadway excavation, and the damage degree model of rock specimen is established. The results show that the loading rate and confining pressure have significant effects on the peak strength and energy characteristics of mudstone at the average damage degree of 0.12, and the peak strength increases with the increase in confining pressure and loading rate. Under the same confining pressure, the energy increases first, and then decreases with the increase in loading rate, and the loading ra... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: electrical property, fracture-filling hydrate, hydrate formation process, three-dimensional spatial distribution
As a future clean energy resource, the exploration and exploitation of natural gas hydrate are favorable for solving the energy crisis and improving environmental pollution. Detecting the spatial distribution of natural gas hydrate in the reservoir is of great importance in natural gas hydrate exploration and exploitation. Fracture-filling hydrate, one of the most common types of gas hydrate, usually appears as a massive or layered accumulation below the seafloor. This paper aims to detect the spatial distribution variation of fracture-filling hydrate in sediments using the electrical property in the laboratory. Massive hydrate and layered hydrate are formed in the electrical resistivity tomography device with a cylindrical array. Based on the electrical resistivity tomography data during the hydrate formation process, the three-dimensional resistivity images of the massive hydrate and layered hydrate are established by using finite element forward, Gauss−Newton inversion, and inverse... February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: drums, heat transfer, power plants, stress–strain behavior, thermal stresses, thermo-mechanical fatigue
Varying demands for electricity within the energy sector require the modification of operating modes to ensure both an uninterrupted electricity supply and the upholding of safety standards. This paper presents a method for the prediction of drum fatigue life, via the local analysis of stress−strain fields and low-cycle fatigue tests of the drum material. The analysis compares the fatigue properties of an unused material and a material that has undergone many years of operation. In addition, this paper suggests drum operating conditions based on the results of load testing under industrial conditions. The drum model was developed on the basis of technical documentation. The analysis includes the calculations of time-dependent temperature distributions, stresses, and strains for various drum startup modes. The drum material fatigue properties are determined under low-cycle conditions. Using the modeling results and fatigue properties, predictions of drum life for different startup modes... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: alloys, electrocrystallization, electrodeposition, external magnetic field, FeNi, film growth, magnetohydrodynamics
The magnetic field-assisted electrodeposition of iron−nickel thin films on different substrates (aluminum, silver, and brass) was investigated. The process was performed galvanostatically in a sulfate solution. The same chemical and electrical conditions were applied for each sample growth, but the time restrictions and the external magnetic field orientation were changeable. The obtained results show a variation of surface morphology and composition dependence on the selected surfaces as a consequence of the presence and orientation of the external magnetic field. We discussed that the FeNi crystal structure depends on the film thickness. The results show the reduction of the film thickness after the external magnetic field application—a decrease of deposition rate. The FeNi alloy’s morphology, composition, and magnetic properties were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and Mössbauer spectroscopy (MS).

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: carbonate reservoirs, deep geothermal resources, fluid geochemistry, geothermal energy, sedimentary basin
Groundwaters circulating in Upper Mesozoic carbonates are of great interest for geothermal heat production and storage applications in the Geneva area. This study aims at providing new insights and proposing new interpretations about the mineral-water reactions and the fluid-flow paths mechanisms across the Geneva Basin (GB). Data from previous studies are combined and improved by new ones collected from cold and hot springs and geothermal exploration wells in 2018 and 2020 in the framework of the GEothermies program and HEATSTORE project. Major ions, trace elements, and the isotopes of Oxygen, Hydrogen, Sulfur, Strontium, and Carbo have been analysed and the results show that the sampled waters have a meteoric origin, the carbonate aquifers act as preferential host rocks for geothermal waters, and partial contribution from the Cenozoic sediments can be observed in some samples. The Jura Mountains and the Saleve Ridge are the main catchment areas and an evolution from a pure Ca-HCO3 fo... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: affordable and clean energy, anaerobic digestion, biomethane, grass, hydrochar, hydrothermal carbonisation, integration, pre-treatment, process water
The integration of hydrothermal carbonisation (HTC) and anaerobic digestion (AD) can overcome some of the disadvantages of thermal or biological processing alone. This study aims to investigate integrated HTC-AD across a range of integration strategies and HTC processing temperatures (150 °C, 200 °C and 250 °C) to improve the energy conversion efficiency (ECE) of grass, compared to AD alone. The separation of hydrochars (HCs) for combustion and process waters (PWs) for digestion appears to be the most energetically feasible HTC-AD integration strategy, compared to HC or HTC-slurry AD. Hydrochars represent the greater energy carrier with between 81−85% of total energy output. The ECE of grass was improved from 51% to 97% (150 °C), 83% (200 °C) and 68% (250 °C) through integrated HTC-AD. Therefore, lower HTC processing temperatures yield more favourable energetics. However, higher HTC temperatures favour more desirable HC properties as a combustion fuel. The hydrochar produced at 250 °C... [more]
The Thermochemical Conversion of Forestry Residues from Silver Fir (Abies alba Mill.) by Torrefaction and Pyrolysis

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: coniferous waste, energy density, thermal valorization, thermogravimetry
Forestry residue is a renewable energy biomass whose valorization has increased due to the interest in replacing exhaustible and environmentally unfriendly fossil resources. Needles, cones and bark from silver fir were thermally processed by separated and combined torrefaction (250 °C) and pyrolysis (550 °C). The torrefaction removed the humidity and extractives and degraded the hemicelluloses, significantly decreasing the oxygen content to ~11 wt% and increasing the carbon content to ~80 wt%, while enhancing the calorific value of the solids (~32 MJ/kg). The pyrolysis produced solid materials with high amounts of fixed carbon (~60−70 wt%) and high heating values, of ~29 MJ/kg. The combined torrefaction + pyrolysis increased the energy yield of the process and decreased the O/C and H/C atomic ratios to about 0.1 and 0.5, respectively, which is close to those of coals. It also led to condensable products with more homogeneously distributed compounds, regardless of the initial biomass ty... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: battery safety, Energy Storage, Li-ion batteries, thermal runaway
Li-ion batteries are already being used in several applications, from portable devices to the automotive industry, and they represent a promising option also for other critical uses, such as in the storage of energy from renewable sources. However, two of the main concerns that still hinder their massive introduction in these further areas, are their safety and reliability. Depending on cell characteristics and operating conditions, the heat generated within the cell can exceed that dissipated from its surface, and the cell will fail, possibly with catastrophic consequences. To identify the hazardous working conditions of a cell, a simulation model including the main exothermic reactions was set up to investigate the onset of thermal runaway in several Li-ion cell configurations under various operating conditions. The behavior of four different cathodes under thermal abuse and the influence of external factors such as the environmental temperature and the cooling system efficiency were... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cement composites, compressive strength, dextrin, green concrete, rheology, surface activity
Growing interest in the use of natural organic compounds in the production of green concrete with the use of plasticizers has been particularly noticeable in the literature of recent decades. Starch is an attractive material due to its abundance, the low cost of sourcing it, and its biodegradability, biocompatibility, and susceptibility to modification. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of starch hydrolysate additives on the physicochemical properties of cement composites and concrete. Compressive strength tests and cement slurry rheology measurements were carried out for water−cement ratios from 0.40 to 0.50 and for amounts of added dextrin from 0.0 to 0.7% in relation to the cement weight. The dextrins used were characterized in terms of their viscosity, polymerisation degree, and surface activity in air/water systems. Conducted research indicates that even the minimum content of dextrin increases the fluidization of cement mixes (the flow diameter increased by 67... [more]

Keywords: (Ferro Fe3O4 and Aggregation) nanoparticle, heat sources, slip boundary condition, two parallel rotating disks
In this article, Cattaneo Christov heat transfer analysis in nanofluid (Ferro Fe3O4 and Aggregation) flow between two parallel rotating disks with different velocities determined. The relaxation time, velocity slip, heat convective boundary condition, and heat generation are also presented. The governing partial differential equation (PDEs) model is converted into a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) system by similarity variables. The solution is computed of the resulting ODEs system by using the Runge Kutta (Rk) method. Here a decline is noticed in the tangential velocity for nanoparticles (Fe3O4 and Aggregation nanoparticle) for higher values of the porosity parameter (λ1), slip parameter γ1, magnetic parameter (M) and Reynolds number (Rer), while tangential velocity arises for higher values of rotation parameters (ß1). This reduces the temperature field for nanoparticles by higher values of Eckert number (Ec), Prandtl number (Pr), Reynolds number (Rer), porosit... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: architected materials, fast thermal response, high surface area, hollow microlattice, ultralight ceramic microlattices
Lightweight reactor materials that simultaneously possess low heat capacity and large surface area are desirable for various applications such as catalytic supports, heat exchangers, and biological scaffolds. However, they are challenging to satisfy this criterion originating from their structural property in most porous cellular solids. Microlattices have great potential to resolve this issue in directing transport phenomena because of their hierarchically ordered design and controllable geometrical features such as porosity, specific surface, and tortuosity. In this study, we report hollow ceramic microlattices comprising a 10 μm thick hollow nickel oxide beam in an octet-truss architecture with low heat capacity and high specific surface area. Our microarchitected reactors exhibited a low heat capacity for a rapid thermal response with a small Biot number (Bi << 1) and large intertwined surface area for homogeneous flow mixing and chemical reactions, which made them ideal cand... Subject: Materials
Keywords: deep shales, Longmaxi Formation, Luzhou Block, nanopore structures, pore water
In the Luzhou Block of the southern Sichuan Basin, the deep Longmaxi shales have become important exploration targets in recent years. However, the water-bearing properties of these shales are still unclear, which significantly limits evaluations of reservoir pore structures and gas-in-place (GIP) contents. In this study, twelve fresh shale core samples were collected at the well site, and the pore water (CPW) and equilibrium water (CEW) contents, as well as the pore structures of the shales, were analyzed under both as-received and dried conditions. The results indicate that the deep shales have low water-bearing extents with a pore water content (CPW) of 3.82−16.67 mg/g, and that both the organic matter (OM) and inorganic matter (IM) pores can be used for pore water storage. The extent of influence of pore water on nonmicropores and IM pore structures is more significant than that on micropores and OM pore structures. Meanwhile, the pore water obviously reduces the retention effects... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: enrichment mechanism, Jianghan Basin, lacustrine source rocks, shale oil
Organic-rich lacustrine shales are widely developed in China, and they have long been simply regarded as homogeneous source rocks, which restricts the understanding of intrasource oil accumulation. At present, the study of the LXF (Lower Member of the Xingouzui Formation) in the Jianghan Basin as an unconventional oil reservoir is still in its infancy, and the hydrocarbon accumulation mechanism is still unclear. Geochemical and mineralogical studies were carried out on a suite of samples from the 100-m-thick sequence, i.e., LXF II Oil Bed, by using XRD, SEM, MICP, and Rock-Eval pyrolysis. The results show that the II Oil Bed is rich in carbonate and poor in clay, so it shows a good fracturing tendency. The high degree of heterogeneity in mineral composition leads to frequent interbedding of different lithofacies. In the II Oil Bed, intercrystalline pores, interparticle pores, and intraparticle pores are developed, and micro-fractures are often observed. However, the main pore types, po... [more]
Experimental Study on the Microstructure of Coal with Different Particle Sizes

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Coal, macromolecular structure, particle size, pore structure
In the study of coal pore structure, the traditional test method does not consider the influence of coal particle size. During the crushing process, coal samples are affected by crushing stress. While the particle size changes, the change characteristics of pore structure and macromolecular structure are a matter for which systematic research is still lacking. In this paper, mercury injection and liquid nitrogen were used to characterize the pore structure of coal. It was found that the porosity, total pore volume and total specific surface area of the coal increased with the decrease of particle size. However, during this process, the pore volume of macropores and mesopores decreases, while the micropores and transition pores increase significantly, indicating that while the particle size decreases, macropores and mesopores are broken into micropores and transition pores. In addition, the pore structure of samples with a particle size less than 200 mesh changes significantly. With the... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: analysis, asphalt, bitumen, combustion, Petroleum Coke, petroleum pitch, pyrolysis
Heavy fractions of petroleum have for long time been bypassed in favour of lighter fractions. Nowadays, in the framework of the “circular economy”, there is a growing interest in residual petroleum heavy fractions. The present work briefly reviews the use and characterization at laboratory scale of some low valuable solid or semi-solid products of the oil refinery industry: asphaltenes (bitumen/asphalt), pet-coke and pitch for use as fuels. The use of solid and semi-solid refinery residues, in particular, of coke as a coal substitute in thermochemical processes and of pitch and asphaltenes as material precursors, requires careful analysis, and an understanding of their structure at the molecular level is mandatory for the development of processing technology. Techniques for the characterization of typical petroleum heavy fractions such as pitches, asphaltenes and cokes are reviewed. An experimental protocol for investigating at the laboratory scale the thermochemical conversion behavio... [more]

Solar heating technology has the advantages of being high efficiency, energy-saving, and environment protecting; however, the instability of solar energy and its mismatch with the variation characteristics of building heat load have caused great difficulties in the design and the efficient operation strategy of a solar system. A heat storage tank is an important part of a solar hot water system. In order to improve system efficiency, this paper proposes a flat plate PCM storage tank, establishes a mathematical model, and conducts experimental verification under different working conditions. Experiments show that in the heat storage process, the phase change material (PCM) only accounts for less than 20% of the space of the PCM storage tank, and its heat storage can reach 50% of the total heat storage of the tank. In the discharge process, the water temperature of the ordinary tank decreases by 20 °C within 1.5 h, and the phase change process lasts approximately 3 h, with the water temp... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: flame-retardant polymers, nanocomposites, phosphazenes, polyimide, synergistic fire retardants
Carbon-based polymer can catch fire when used as cathode material in batteries and supercapacitors, due to short circuiting. Polyimide is known to exhibit flame retardancy by forming char layer in condensed phase. The high char yield of polyimide is attributed to its aromatic nature and the existence of a donor−acceptor complex in its backbone. Fabrication of hybrid polyimide material can provide better protection against fire based on multiple fire-retardancy mechanisms. Nanocomposites generally show a significant enhancement in mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties. Nanoparticles, such as graphene and carbon nanotubes, can enhance flame retardancy in condensed phase by forming a dense char layer. Silicone-based materials can also provide fire retardancy in condensed phase by a similar mechanism as polyimide. However, some inorganic fire retardants, such as phosphazene, can enhance flame retardancy in gaseous phase by releasing flame inhibiting radicals. The flame inhibiting... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: adsorption capacity, fractal dimension, pore structure, tectonic coal
The occurrence and migration of coalbed methane (CBM) is inseparably associated with the pore structure within the coal seams. Three Permian Longtan Formation tectonic coal samples (QL, XL, XT) from Guizhou Province were studied to determine pore size distribution and characteristics, as well as factors that influence adsorption. Adsorption test results show that all samples generally have “ink bottle”-type pores, with large pore capacity but poor connectivity. Furthermore, the fractal dimension Df, the tortuosity “τ”, and tortuous fractal dimension DT of samples were calculated. Among the studied tectonic coals, moisture, ash, tortuosity, and volatile fraction have a positive effect on the maximum adsorption capacity (VL), whereas intact coals’ tortuosity volatile has a negative correlation with the maximum adsorption capacity (VL).

Enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulose materials has been identified as the rate-limiting step during anaerobic digestion. The application of pretreatment techniques can influence the biodegradability of lignocellulose substrate. This study combined Fe3O4 nanoparticles, which serve as a heterogeneous catalyst during anaerobic digestion, with different particle sizes of Arachis hypogea shells. Batch anaerobic digestion was set up at mesophilic temperature for 35 days. The results showed that 20 mg/L Fe3O4 additives, as a single pretreatment, significantly influence biogas and methane yields with an 80.59 and 106.66% increase, respectively. The combination of 20 mg/L Fe3O4 with a 6 mm particle size of Arachis hypogea shells produced the highest cumulative biogas yield of 130.85 mL/gVSadded and a cumulative methane yield of 100.86 mL/gVSadded. This study shows that 20 mg/L of Fe3O4 additive, combined with the particle size pretreatment, improved the biogas and methane yields of Arachis hy... [more]
