Pyrolysis-Based Municipal Solid Waste Management in Poland—SWOT Analysis
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: management, municipal solid waste, pyrolysis, SWOT
Poland’s management of municipal waste, which amounts to over 13 million tons/year, is not efficient—about 60% of the waste is subjected to recovery processes, about 20% of all municipal waste is converted into energy, and almost 40% is landfilled. The authors of this article recognize the potential of pyrolysis as a method of the thermal processing of waste allowing the potential of the energy contained in the waste to be utilized. Pyrolysis is an economically attractive alternative to incineration, with a significantly lower environmental impact, allowing efficient waste management and the use of pyrolysis by-products in the energy sector (pyrolysis gas), or in the building materials sector (biochar). Despite so many advantages, this method is not employed in Poland. The aim of the paper is to indicate a recommended strategy for the application of pyrolysis in Poland as a method of the thermal processing of municipal solid waste. SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) a... [more]

Influence of Sweat on Joint and Sensor Reliability of E-Textiles
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: conductive stretchable textile ribbon, e-textiles, fully printed graphene-based humidity sensor, nonconductive adhesive compression bonding, soldering onto textile
This article addresses reliability under the sweat of interconnection techniques for the mounting surface mounted device (SMD) components and fully printed humidity sensors onto conductive stretchable textile ribbons. Samples underwent testing for the effect of ageing by artificial sweat on their electrical resistance using both alkaline and acidic artificial sweat. The best results in terms of electrical resistance change were obtained for samples soldered to the conductive fibers interwoven in the ribbon. However, this method can damage the ribbon due to the high temperature during soldering and significantly reduce the mechanical properties and flexibility of the ribbon, which can lead to a limited service life of samples. On the other hand, adhesive bonding is a very interesting alternative, where the above-mentioned properties are preserved, but there is a significant effect of sweat ageing on electrical resistance. The results of fully printed graphene-based humidity sensors show... [more]

Microbial fuel cells (MFC) are an emerging technology for wastewater treatment that utilizes the metabolism of microorganisms to generate electricity from the organic matter present in water directly. The principle of MFC is the same as hydrogen fuel cell and has three main components (i.e., anode, cathode, and proton exchange membrane). The membrane separates the anode and cathode chambers and keeps the anaerobic and aerobic conditions in the two chambers, respectively. This review paper describes the state-of-the-art membrane materials particularly suited for MFC and discusses the recent development to obtain robust, sustainable, and cost-effective membranes. Nafion 117, Flemion, and Hyflon are the typical commercially available membranes used in MFC. Use of non-fluorinated polymeric membrane materials such as sulfonated silicon dioxide (S-SiO2) in sulfonated polystyrene ethylene butylene polystyrene (SSEBS), sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SPEEK) and graphene oxide sulfonated pol... Performance of Cathodes Fabricated from Mixture of Active Materials Obtained from Recycled Lithium-Ion Batteries
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cathode performance, lithium-ion battery, mixture of cathode active materials, recycling, separation of cathode active materials
The cathode performance of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) fabricated from recycled cathode active materials is studied for three scenarios. These scenarios are based on the conditions for separation of different cathode active materials in recycling facilities during the LIB’s recycling process. In scenario one, the separation process is performed ideally, and the obtained pure single cathode active material is used to make new LIBs after regeneration. In scenario two, the separation of active materials is performed with efficiencies of less than 100%, which is the actual case in the recycling process. In this scenario, a single cathode active material that contains a little of the other types of cathode active materials is used to make new LIBs after the materials’ regeneration. In scenario three, the separation has not been performed during the recycling process. In this scenario, all types of cathode active materials are regenerated together, and a mixture is used to make new LIBs. Th... [more]

Characterization of Supraharmonic Emission from Three Different Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructures in Time and Frequency Domain
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: electric vehicles, interruption of charging processes, PQ monitoring, Supraharmonics
With the recent proliferation of electric vehicles (EVs), maintaining power quality within acceptable limits in future distribution grids will become a challenging task. A specific concern is the spread of Supraharmonics in the range from 2 to 150 kHz, generated by modern power electronic devices. In this paper, the long term Supraharmonic distortion from three differently sized electric vehicle charging infrastructures is analyzed in frequency and time domain. At the monitored sites several interruptions of EV charging processes were observed due to poor power quality. It was found that vehicles disconnect when exposed to high levels of harmonic distortion. Moreover, the impact of the charging EVs on the Supraharmonic distortion and the interaction with the background distortion for the individual sites is discussed. Results show that a general increase in Supraharmonics emission can be expected due to the rising number of EVs. However, measurements also indicate that damping effects... [more]

Multimodal Carbonates: Distribution of Oil Saturation in the Microporous Regions of Arab Formations
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: capillary invasion, IOR, microporosity, mixed wettability, multimodal porosity, primary drainage, tight carbonates
Perhaps as much as 50% of the oil-in-place in carbonate formations around the world is locked away in the easy to bypass microporosity. If some of this oil is unlocked by the improved recovery processes focused on tight carbonate formations, the world may gain a major source of lower-rate power over several decades. Here, we overview the Arab D formation in the largest oil field on earth, the Ghawar. We investigate the occurrence of microporosity of different origins and sizes using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and pore casting techniques. Then, we present a robust calculation of the probability of invasion and oil saturation distribution in the nested micropores using mercury injection capillary pressure data available in the literature. We show that large portions of the micropores in Arab D formation would have been bypassed during primary drainage unless the invading crude oil ganglia were sufficiently long. We also show that, under prevailing conditions of primary drainage o... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: high sensitivity of rheological parameters, integral transforms, nanoparticles of carbon nanotubes, rate of heat transfer
There is no denying fact that nanoparticles of carbon nanotubes are employed to improve the performance of thermal stability in comparison with traditional nanoparticles, this is because nanoparticles of carbon nanotubes possess outstanding material properties. In this manuscript, a mathematical model of mixed convective flow based on carbon nanotubes suspended in ethylene glycol has been developed and derived by means of Fourier Sine transform. In order to analyze the thermophysical properties of nanofluid, the temperature and velocity profiles have been investigated through fractional derivative and integral transforms. The comparative analysis of single and multi-walled carbon nanotubes has been presented for the sake of enhancement of heat transfer. It is worth mentioning that embedded rheological parameters have shown the sensitivity for the enhancement of heat transfer with and without fractional techniques through graphical illustration.

Graphene-Based Phase Change Composite Nano-Materials for Thermal Storage Applications
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: graphene-based PCMs, nanoplatelets, PCM, thermal conductivity, thermal storage
We report results concerning the functionalization of graphene-based nanoplatelets for improving the thermal energy storage capacity of commonly used phase change materials (PCMs). The goal of this study was to enhance the low thermal conductivity of the PCMs, while preserving their specific and latent heats. We focused on wax-based PCMs, and we tested several types of graphene nanoparticles (GNPs) at a set of different concentrations. Both the size and shape of the GNPs were found to be important factors affecting the PCM’s thermal properties. These were evaluated using differential scanning calorimetry measurements and a modified enthalpy-based water bath method. We found that a small addition of GNPs (1% weight) with high aspect ratio is sufficient to double the thermal conductivity of several widely used PCMs. Our results suggest a simple and efficient procedure for improving the thermal properties of PCMs used in thermal energy storage applications.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: degradation, Fuel Cells, interconnects, protective coatings, solid oxide cells
Stainless steel interconnect materials used in solid oxide fuel cells and electrolysers need to be coated to improve oxidation resistance and to mitigate Cr-vaporization. This work aimed to explore the optimal steel/coating combinations suitable for use in reversible solid oxide stacks and evaluated (Co,Mn)3O4 spinel, LaFeO3 perovskite, Ce/Co and Y-based coatings, on AISI441 and Crofer 22 APU steels. The coatings were evaluated based on measurements of mass gain and oxide scale thickness after exposure at 700 and 800 °C to fuel side (90 vol.% H2O/10 vol.% H2) and air/oxygen side (pure O2) atmospheres. In pure O2, the most efficient coatings for limiting oxide scale formation and Cr evaporation, compared to the bare steel, were (Co,Mn)3O4 and CeCo on Crofer 22 APU. In 90 vol.% H2O/10 vol.% H2, the Y-based coating showed the largest improvement in oxidation resistance.

Estimation Complete Combustion Coefficient in Rotary Kilns
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: parameter predictions, process model, rotary kiln, waste thermal treatment
This paper presents a model-based analysis of variability of thermodynamic and chemical parameters in a rotary kiln (RK) during thermal treatment of animal waste. The core process of chemical treatment of waste takes place in RKs; the process involves heating, gasification and partial combustion of the waste. Control over these parameters, and especially the level of complete combustion, determines the quality and efficiency of the process. In operational practice, control and analysis of the variability of process parameters is complicated by the high degree of simultaneity of individual transformations, random disruptions of the process and metrological difficulties resulting from high temperature and chemical activity of the materials being processed. The purpose of preparing the model was to obtain a tool for predicting variability of selected process parameters. By definition, model calculations assume no influence of disturbances on output values, which makes it possible to acqui... [more]

Optimization of the Adsorption/Desorption Contribution from Metal-Organic-Heat-Carrier Nanoparticles in Waste Heat Recovery Applications: R245fa/MIL101 in Organic Rankine Cycles
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Adsorption, metal-organic heat carriers, ORC, two-phase fluid, waste heat
The efficient recovery of low temperature waste heat, representing from 25% up to 55% of the energy losses in industrial processes, still remains a challenge and even Organic Rankine Cycles (ORCs) experience a strong efficiency decay in such a low temperature operating range (T < 150 °C). In similar heat transfer processes, several nanofluids have been proposed as a solution for increasing heat transfer efficiency, but they produced only moderate enhancements of the heat transfer efficiency in comparison with pure fluids. This paper aims at numerically assessing the potential gain in efficiency deriving from the application of an unconventional type of nanoparticles, the metal-organic heat carriers (MOHCs), in the ORC field. In comparison with standard nanoparticles, these MOHCs make it possible to extract additional heat from the endothermic enthalpy of desorption, with a theoretically high potential for boosting the heat transfer capacity of ORC systems. Sensor Technology Options for Municipal Solid Waste Characterization for Optimal Operation of Waste-to-Energy Plants
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: feasibility studies, online monitoring, sensor technologies, waste characterization, waste-to-energy
Reuse, refurbishing, and recycling are the most sustainable options for handling waste materials. However, for municipal solid waste (MSW) that is highly heterogenic, crude, contaminated, and decrepit, thermal conversion in waste-to-energy (WtE) plants is an option. In such plants, the fuel quality of MSW is difficult to predict and the substantial changes expected are challenging for incineration stability. Development of new online sensor technologies for monitoring waste properties prior to incineration is therefore needed. Sensors may contribute to increase WtE process stability, as well as reducing the probability of incineration stops or emissions exceeding legal limits. In this work, the operating principles of potential sensor systems for waste monitoring are categorized and assessed to be implemented for providing parameters for process control or indicators for process alarms in the waste incineration process. Subject: Materials
Keywords: ac. impedance spectroscopy, OER, polycrystalline Pt electrode, RC, resorcinol, UPD of H
This article reports on the influence of resorcinol (RC) on the kinetics of underpotential deposition of hydrogen (UPD of H) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), studied on a polycrystalline Pt electrode in a 0.5 M sulphuric acid supporting solution. It is well known that both PEM fuel cells and water electrolysers’ electrodes often contain significant amounts of nanostructured Pt or other types of noble metal particles. These materials provide the superior catalytic activity of electrochemical reactions such as OER (oxygen evolution reaction), HER (hydrogen evolution reaction) and ORR (oxygen reduction reaction). The trace amounts of phenolic substances contained in air or water could be harmful (when in contact with a fuel cell/water electrolyser’s working environment) to the abovementioned catalytic surfaces. Hence, they could potentially have severe detrimental effects on the kinetics of these processes. The results obtained in this work provided evidence for the detrimental ro... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: bioplastic, infrared spectrometry, layer chromatography, optimization of oil, waste cooking oil
Alternative sources of fuel have been a concern in the last few decades. The growth of urbanization and industrialization will lead to the exhaustion of fossil fuels, attracting studies on alternative routes. The main aim of this study was to produce biodiesel from waste cooking oil (WCO) by methyl transesterification using sodium hydroxide as a catalyst. For this, the physicochemical parameters of biodiesel were studied in triplicate (density, acidity, saponification, viscosity, corrosiveness to copper, visual appearance, and cloud point). An analysis by thin layer chromatography and infrared spectrometry was also performed. The increase in yield (83.3%) was directly proportional to the increase in the catalyst (0.22 g of NaOH). The infrared absorption spectra of WCO and biodiesel showed the presence of common and singular bands of each material. Furthermore, a simple and low-cost mechanism was proposed for purifying glycerol. The spectra of glycerol versus purified glycerin showed th... [more]
