Application of Thermal and Cavitation Effects for Heat and Mass Transfer Process Intensification in Multicomponent Liquid Media
Anatoliy M. Pavlenko, Hanna Koshlak
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: acceleration, breaking, desorption, dispersed phase, force, pressure, speed
In this paper, the authors consider the processes of dynamic interaction between the boiling particles of the dispersed phase of the emulsion leading to the large droplet breakup. Differences in the consideration of forces that determine the breaking of non-boiling and boiling droplets have been indicated in the study. They have been determined by the possibility of using the model to define the processes of displacement, deformation, or fragmentation of the inclusion of the dispersed phase under the influence of a set of neighboring particles. The dynamics of bubbles in a compressible liquid with consideration for interfacial heat and mass transfer has also been analyzed in the paper. The effect of standard and system parameters on the intensity of cavitation processes is considered. Physical transformations during the cavitation treatment of liquid are caused not only by shock waves and radiated pressure pulses but also by extreme thermal effects. At the stage of ultimate bubble comp... [more]
Transport Performance of a Steeply Situated Belt Conveyor
Leopold Hrabovský, Jiří Fries
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: angle of inclination of the conveyor, batch volume of conveyed material, belt cleats, flat roller support of the belt, straight loading profile of the conveyor belt
The paper presents a methodology for determining the volume of a batch of conveyed material located before a transverse partition of a certain height and the distance over which the batch of material extends on the working surface of the conveyor belt along its longitudinal axis. Knowing the geometric dimensions of the transported batch of material makes it possible to appropriately set the spacing of the belt cleats and thereby to optimally determine the conveying performance of the inclined belt conveyor. When the angle of inclination of a conveyor with a straight idler frame is equal to the angle of surcharge of the conveyed material, then no layer of material is carried on the surface of the belt. If the conveyor belt is guided along a trough idler frame, only the lower cross-section of the filling of material is used. An increase in the cross-section of the belt load of a conveyor inclined at an angle, which exceeds the angle of repose of the conveyed material, can be achieved by... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: density functional theory, organic dye, photodiode, Pinus brutia, spray pyrolysis
In this study, the performance of an organic dye obtained from the bark of the red pine (Pinus brutia) tree growing in Muğla/Turkey as an interface layer in the Au/n-Si Schottky diode (SD) structure was evaluated. For this purpose, at first, the optimized molecular structure, the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) simulations of the organic dye were calculated by the Gauss program and it was theoretically proven that the dye exhibits semiconducting properties. Then, the electrical and photodiode variables such as ideality factor, effective barrier height, series resistance, interface states density distribution, photosensitivity, and photo responsivity were evaluated employing current-voltage measurements under dark and different illumination densities. Additionally, C-V measurements were used to demonstrate that the fabricated device has capacitive features and this capability varies as a function of the frequency. Under these... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: bio-oil, biosourced porous carbon, electrochemical performances, tannin, xerogel-like materials
Energy storage is currently one of the most significant technological challenges globally, and supercapacitor is a prominent candidate over batteries due to its ability for fast charging and long lifetime. Supercapacitors typically use porous carbon as electrodes, because of both the high conductivity and surface area of the material. However, the state-of-the-art porous carbon described in the literature uses toxic chemicals and complex procedures that enhance costs and pollute the environment. Thus, a more sustainable procedure to produce porous carbon is highly desirable. In this context, xerogel-like carbons were prepared by a new, cheap, simple route to polymerization reactions of tannin-formaldehyde in a bio-oil by-product. Using bio-oil in its natural pH allowed a cost reduction and avoided using new reactants to change the reactional medium. Textural properties and electrochemical performances were improved by fast activating the material per 20 min. The non-activated carbon xe... [more]
Improving Thermal Stability and Hydrophobicity of Rutile-TiO2 Nanoparticles for Oil-Impregnated Paper Application

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: AKD, ASA, cellulose, dielectric properties, hydrophilic, kraft paper, moisture absorption, nanoparticles, rutile-TiO2, thermal stability, transformer
Thermal stress and moisture absorption can cause a synergetic negative impact on kraft paper. Among various approaches for improving the dielectric properties of kraft paper, nanotechnology has had promising results. However, the hydrophilicity of most metal oxide nanoparticles renders nanomodified kraft paper more vulnerable to thermal stress and moisture, thereby inducing degradation. In nanomodified kraft paper research, the use of TiO2 nanoparticles has yielded the most promising results. The major shortfall, however, is the hydrophilicity of TiO2. This work investigated surface modifications of rutile-TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) for improved hydrophobicity and thermal stability. Rutile-TiO2 NPs is a nontoxic metal oxide that can withstand high temperature and is stable in chemical reactions. Two cases of surfactants were used—alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) and alkenyl succinic anhydride (ASA). The intention was to increase heat resistance and reduce the surface free energy of the rutile-Ti... Pedro Nel Ovalle, José Vuelvas, Arturo Fajardo, Carlos Adrián Correa-Flórez, Fredy Ruiz
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: aggregator, consumer behavior, contract portfolio, demand response, demand side management
This paper presents a methodology for determining the optimal portfolio allocation for a demand response aggregator. The formulation is based on Day-Ahead electricity prices, in which the aggregator coordinates a set of residential consumers that are recruited through contracts. Four types of contracts are analyzed, considering both direct and indirect demand response programs. The objective is to compare different scenarios for contract portfolios in order to establish the benefits of each market agent. An optimization problem is formulated to capture the interactions between the aggregator and end consumers. The model is formulated as a mathematical program with equilibrium constraints: At the upper level, the aggregator maximizes its benefits, whereas the lower level represents the consumers’ contracts. By applying the developed methodology, the characterization of the consumers’ behavior is established in order to forecast their responses to the generation of punctual incentives, b... [more]
High Dispersion of CeO2 on CeO2/MgO Prepared under Dry Conditions and Its Improved Redox Properties
Kenji Taira, Reiko Murao
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: CeO2, Dry Reforming, heterogeneous catalysis, in situ XRD, MgO
Suppressing the usage of rare-earth elements is crucial for making the catalysts sustainable. Preparing CeO2 nanoparticles is a common technique to reduce CeO2 consumption, but such nanoparticles are prone to sinter or react with the supports when subjected to heat treatments. This study demonstrated that stable CeO2 nanoparticles were deposited on MgO by the simple impregnation method. When CeO2/MgO was prepared under the dry atmosphere, the CeO2 nanoparticles remained ~3 nm in diameter even after being heated at 800 °C, which is much smaller than ~5 nm of CeO2/MgO prepared under ambient air. Temperature-programmed reduction, temperature-programmed oxidation, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and in situ X-ray diffraction studies showed that CeO2/MgO exhibited higher oxygen mobility when prepared under the dry atmosphere. Dry reforming reaction demonstrated that CeO2/MgO prepared under the dry atmosphere exhibited higher activity than that prepared under ambient air and pure CeO2.

Keywords: aircraft materials, CFRP composites, conductivity, damage tests, impulse current generator, lightning effects
Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites are lightweight and an increasingly used material with good mechanical properties. In the aviation industry, they are also required to have specific electrical properties that guarantee resistance to the direct and indirect lightning effects. The paper is focused on the description of a test stand and development of a method used to determine the electrical characteristics of conductive CFRP laminate samples with the use of high current impulses of lightning nature. Samples of three laminates (square format with side 30 × 30 cm) with a different composition were tested on the constructed stand, confirming the possibility of characterizing this type of laminate sample in terms of electrical conductivity and resistance to the effects of lightning current. It was possible to observe the impulse current flow (with a peak value up to 15 kA and a rise time above 6 µs) from the high voltage electrode placed in the center of the sample in all d... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: coiled tube reactor, microencapsulation, phase change materials (PCMs), thermal energy storage, ultraviolet
Microencapsulation of phase change materials (PCMs) remain a suitable option within building materials, as they contribute to the thermal mass and provide an energy buffer, an added benefit. This paper presents a novel method for the rapid fabrication of microencapsulated phase change materials (PCMs) at ambient conditions in a perfluoroalkoxy (PFA) coiled tube ultraviolet (UV) reactor. The objective of this study was to optimize key parameters such as the product yield and quality of the as-prepared microcapsules. Rubitherm® RT-21™ PCM was microencapsulated within shells of poly-methyl-methacrylate (PMMA) through a suspension emulsion polymerization approach, where the crosslinking of polymers was driven by UV radiations with an appropriate photoinitiator. The characteristics of the resulting PCM microcapsules were found to be affected by the volumetric flow rate of the emulsion inside the coiled tube reactor. Higher volumetric flow rates led to higher PCM contents and higher microenc... [more]

Keywords: AlTi3 nanoparticles, in-house-synthesized additive, kinetics, reaction mechanism, reactive hydride composite
In recent years, the use of selected additives for improving the kinetic behavior of the system 2LiH + MgB2 (Li-RHC) has been investigated. As a result, it has been reported that some additives (e.g., 3TiCl3·AlCl3), by reacting with the Li-RHC components, form nanostructured phases (e.g., AlTi3) possessing peculiar microstructural properties capable of enhancing the system’s kinetic behavior. The effect of in-house-produced AlTi3 nanoparticles on the hydrogenation/dehydrogenation kinetics of the 2LiH + MgB2 (Li-RHC) system is explored in this work, with the aim of reaching high hydrogen storage performance. Experimental results show that the AlTi3 nanoparticles significantly improve the reaction rate of the Li-RHC system, mainly for the dehydrogenation process. The observed improvement is most likely due to the similar structural properties between AlTi3 and MgB2 phases which provide an energetically favored path for the nucleation of MgB2. In comparison with the pristine material, the... [more]
Elastic Reverse-Time Migration with Complex Topography

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: finite difference, multi-wave and multicomponent, reverse-time migration, surface topography, topography-related filter
Migration is an important step in seismic data processing for oil and gas exploration. The accuracy of migration directly affects the accuracy of subsequent oil and gas reservoir characterization. Reverse-time migration is one of the most accurate migration methods at present. Multi-wave and multicomponent seismic data contain more P- and S-wave information. Making full use of multi-wave and multicomponent seismic data can offer more information about underground structure and lithology, as well as improve the accuracy of seismic exploration. Elastic reverse-time migration (ERTM) has no dip restriction and can be applied to image multi-wave and multicomponent seismic data in complex structural areas and some special lithology structures. However, the surface topography of complex regions has an influence on wavefield and seriously degrades the quality of ERTM’s migration results. We developed a new ERTM method to migrate multi-wave and multicomponent seismic data in the region with com... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: heat exchanger, heat transfer, recuperator, Trefftz method
The paper discusses two mathematical models for the air flow through a plate heat exchanger with parallel plates. The first exhausts the used air and then supplies the fresh air. The second exhausts the used air above the plate and simultaneously supplies fresh air under it (counter-flow exchanger). In both cases, the exhaust air heat is used to heat the supply air. The purpose of the research is to verify which exchanger uses the exhaust air heat more efficiently. The method of the Trefftz function was used to determine approximate solutions of the analysed problems. The results obtained for 1.2 mm thick steel, aluminium, and copper plates and for external winter, summer, and spring−autumn temperatures are discussed. The results indicate that steel is the best material for a plate heat exchanger, and the counter-flow exchanger is more efficient of the two. Thanks to the use of thin steel plates and the reduction of the air exchange time to a few minutes, cheap and efficient counter-fl... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: dynamic load, elastic modulus, limestone, mechanical properties, rock
The paper presents the results of the experimental investigation of carbonate reservoir rocks subjected to quasistatic and nonlinear dynamic loads. During the quasistatic loading the zones of linear elasticity were determined. Dynamic loading of samples was performed at several frequencies and load amplitudes using a testing system. There were two zones found in which the elastic modulus changes nonlinearly in terms of dynamic load frequency. While the frequency of the dynamic load increases from 0 to 10 Hz the dynamic elastic modulus rises according to logarithmic law; while the frequency increases from 10 to 60 Hz elastic modulus rises according to a power law for each load amplitude. The amplitude of the longitudinal strain and phase shift decreases with increasing frequency of the dynamic load. Under the higher strain rates the rock gets stiffer in comparison with rock subjected to smaller strain rate dynamic loading. Saturation of rock samples with distilled water flattening the d... Subject: Materials
Keywords: AEM electrolysis, alkaline HER, alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction, anion exchange membrane electrolysis, catalyst materials, water electrolysis
An increasing emphasis on energy storage has resulted in a surge of R&D efforts into producing catalyst materials for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with emphasis on decreasing the usage of platinum group metals (PGMs). Alkaline water electrolysis holds promise for satisfying future energy storage demands, however the intrinsic potential of this technology is impeded by sluggish reaction kinetics. Here, we summarize the latest efforts within alkaline HER electrocatalyst design, where these efforts are divided between three catalyst design strategies inspired by the three prevailing theories describing the pH-dependence of the HER activity. Modifying the electronic structure of a host through codoping and creating specific sites for hydrogen/hydroxide adsorption stand out as promising strategies. However, with the vast amount of possible combinations, emphasis on screening parameters is important. The authors predict that creating a codoped catalyst using the first strategy by sc... [more]

Keywords: acoustic emission method, gas insulated switchgears, moving particles
Gas-insulated switchgears (GISs) are important pieces of power equipment used to improve the reliability of power facilities. As the number of GISs increases, more insulation failures occur every year. The most common cause of insulation failure is particles and foreign bodies producing a partial discharge (PD), which causes deterioration of the insulation materials and results in insulation breakdown. However, it is not easy to detect them by conventional PD and ultra-high frequency (UHF) PD measurements because it is difficult to apply the conventional method to the GISs in service, and the UHF method is not always applicable to GISs. Therefore, an appropriate method to detect particles and foreign bodies in GISs is needed. In this study, experimental validation was performed to detect particles moving in GISs using the acoustic emission (AE) method. Acoustic wave signals were produced by the particles moving on the surface of a flat plate when applying voltage. An AE sensor with a f... [more]

Hydrogen is a notoriously difficult substance to store yet has endless energy applications. Thus, the study of long-term hydrogen storage, and high-pressure bulk hydrogen storage have been the subject of much research in the last several years. To create a research path forward, it is important to know what research has already been done, and what is already known about hydrogen storage. In this review, several approaches to hydrogen storage are addressed, including high-pressure storage, cryogenic liquid hydrogen storage, and metal hydride absorption. Challenges and advantages are offered based on reported research findings. Since the project looks closely at advanced manufacturing, techniques for the same are outlined as well. There are seven main categories into which most rapid prototyping styles fall. Each is briefly explained and illustrated as well as some generally accepted advantages and drawbacks to each style. March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: AVOF reflection coefficient, fluids-bearing fractured reservoirs, Q-VTI effective medium model, seismic attenuated anisotropic characteristics
Seismic wave exhibits the characteristics of anisotropy and attenuation while propagating through the fluid-bearing fractured or layered reservoirs, such as fractured carbonate and shale bearing oil or gas. We derive a linearized reflection coefficient that simultaneously considers the effects of anisotropy and attenuation caused by fractures and fluids. Focusing on the low attenuated transversely isotropic medium with a vertical symmetry axis (Q-VTI) medium, we first express the complex stiffness tensors based on the perturbation theory and the linear constant Q model at an arbitrary reference frequency, and then we derive the linearized approximate reflection coefficient of P to P wave. It decouples the P- and S-wave inverse quality factors, and Thomsen-style attenuation-anisotropic parameters from complex P- and S-wave velocity and complex Thomsen anisotropic parameters. By evaluating the reflection coefficients around the solution point of the interface of two models, we analyze th... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: activated carbon, adsorbent, biochar, pyrolysis, steam activation, woody biomass
There is increasing demand in environmental remediation and other sectors for specialized sorbents made from renewable materials rather than hard coals and minerals. The proliferation of new pyrolysis technologies to produce bio-based energy, fuels, chemicals, and bioproducts from biomass has left significant gaps in our understanding of how the various carbonaceous materials produced by these systems respond to processes intended to improve their adsorption properties and commercial value. This study used conventional steam activation in an industrial rotary calciner to produce activated carbon (AC) from softwood biochars made by three novel pyrolysis systems. Steam was injected across four heating zones ranging from 816 °C to 927 °C during paired trials conducted at calciner retention times of 45 min and 60 min. The surface area of the three biochars increased from 2.0, 177.3, and 289.1 m2 g−1 to 868.4, 1092.9, and 744.8 m2 g−1, respectively. AC iodine number ranged from 951 to 1218... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: biochar, carob waste, slow pyrolysis
The zero-waste city challenge of the modern society is inevitably addressed to the development of model’s waste-to-energy. In this work, carob waste, largely used in the agro-industrial sector for sugar extraction or locust beangum (LBG) production, is considered as feedstock for the slow pyrolysis process. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in 2012, the world production of carobs was ca. 160,000 tons, mainly concentrated in the Mediterranean area (Spain, Italy, Morocco, Portugal, and Greece). To evaluate the biomass composition, at first, the carob waste was subjected to thermo-gravimetric analysis. The high content of fixed carbon suggests that carobs are a plausible candidate for pyrolysis conversion to biochar particles. The thermal degradation of the carob waste proceeds by four different steps related to the water and volatile substances’ removal, degradation of hemicellulose, lignin and cellulose degradation, and lignin decomposition.... This paper provides novel additional evidence on the characteristics of Collective Action Initiatives (CAIs), investigating their role within the European energy sector. It analyses and presents results of a survey administered in six European countries: the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Poland, Estonia, and Spain. CAIs are studied in light of four key dimensions, those being their creation dynamics, the way they are organized, financed, and the activities they undertake. The results presented are also interpreted to reflect on their role as drivers of social innovation (SI) within energy transition in Europe. The analysis shows that the contribution of CAIs to the energy transition has a much wider scope than the development of energy projects and provision of energy services. CAIs are intrinsically socially innovative models of implementation as characterised by a strong level of citizen involvement and participation. Moreover, they have a potential multi-level role in the energy tran... [more]

In order to investigate the difference of pore structure characteristics between mudstone and coal under different particle size conditions, samples acquired from Henan province were smashed and screened into three different particle sizes (20−40, 80−100, and >200 mesh) to conduct the experiments, using the high-pressure mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and low-temperature N2 adsorption (LT-N2A) techniques. The results demonstrated that the proportion of open pores or semi-enclosed pores increased, and the pores became preferable contacted each other for both mudstone and coal during the crushing process. These variations of pore structure characteristics in the coal were beneficial to methane storage and migration. The total specific surface areas and pore volumes all showed a tendency of increasing continually for both mudstone and coal, as the particle sizes decreased from the LT-N2A test. The mudstone and coal were non-rigid aggregates with micropores, plate-shaped pores, and sl... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: axle load-sharing, finite element analysis, support structure, tank vehicle
The design and construction of tanks used for the carriage of dangerous liquid materials fall within strict standards (i.e., EN13094:2015, R111). According to these standards, their supporting structures (Ss), used for the mounting of the tank on the freight vehicle, need to be able to sustain the developed stresses. Optimizing the number of supporting structures can lead to more efficient tank designs that allow the tank to transport more liquid material and need less time to be manufactured. In the present paper, the effect of the reduction of the number of supporting structures in (a) the structural integrity of the tank construction, (b) its dynamic behavior and (c) the load-sharing of the tank to the axles of the freight vehicle is investigated using the finite element (FE) method. As a case study a box-shaped tank mounted on a four-axle freight vehicle with a technical permissible maximum laden mass of 35 tn, five Ss are used. Four FE models with a decreasing number of Ss were bu... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: electric vehicle, large-format cell, lithium-ion battery, phase change material
The thermal performance of a large-format (52.3 Ah) Li-ion pouch battery with an n-octadecane PCM was investigated. A simplified 1D model was employed to estimate the transient thermal behavior. Two design parameters, the thickness and the thermal conductivity of the PCM, were considered. A 0.5 mm thick n-octadecane PCM integrated with aluminum foam reduced the battery temperature to 34.3 °C and 50.7 °C at the end stage of discharging under 3C and 5C discharge rates, respectively. The 1D results compared to the 3D results were able to predict the temperature dissipation by the PCM method at the end of discharging. The 1D approach clearly produced reliable results in predicting the thermal behavior of the PCM cooling and was superior in practical applications with its low cost and time consumption. A 3D CFD simulation was able to describe the detailed temperature uniformity in the cell, which is an important factor in the design and evaluation of a battery cooling system.
