The Effect of Anode Material on the Performance of a Hydrogen Producing Microbial Electrolysis Cell, Operating with Synthetic and Real Wastewaters
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: carbon nanotubes, dark fermentation effluent, electrochemical characterization, Hydrogen, microbial electrolysis cell, toxicity assessment
The aim of the study was to assess the effect of anode materials, namely a carbon nanotube (CNT)-buckypaper and a commercial carbon paper (CP) on the performance of a two-chamber microbial electrolysis cell (MEC), in terms of hydrogen production and main electrochemical characteristics. The experiments were performed using both acetate-based synthetic wastewater and real wastewater, specifically the effluent of a dark fermentative hydrogenogenic reactor (fermentation effluent), using cheese whey (CW) as substrate. The results showed that CP led to higher hydrogen production efficiency and current density compared to the CNT-buckypaper anode, which was attributed to the better colonization of the CP electrode with electroactive microorganisms, due to the negative effects of CNT-based materials on the bacteria metabolism. By using the fermentation effluent as substrate, a two-stage process is developed, where dark fermentation (DF) of CW for hydrogen production occurs in the first step,... [more]

Specific Methane Yield of Wetland Biomass in Dry and Wet Fermentation Technologies
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, paludi-biomass, specific methane yield, wetlands
Our study evaluated the specific methane yield (SMY) of selected wetland species subjected to wet and dry anaerobic digestion: Carex elata All. (CE), a mixture (~50/50) of Carex elata All. and Carex acutiformis L. (CA), Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud. (PA), Typha latifolia L. (TL) and Phalaris arundinacea L. (PAr). Plants were harvested in late September, and therefore, the study material was characterised by high lignin content. The highest lignin content (36.40 ± 1.04% TS) was observed in TL, while the lowest (16.03 ± 1.54% TS) was found in CA. PAr was characterised by the highest hemicellulose content (37.55 ± 1.04% TS), while the lowest (19.22 ± 1.22% TS) was observed in TL. Cellulose content was comparable in almost all plant species studied and ranged from 25.32 ± 1.48% TS to 29.37 ± 0.87% TS, except in PAr (16.90 ± 1.29% TS). The methane production potential differed significantly among species and anaerobic digestion (AD) technologies. The lowest SMY was observed fo... [more]

BiFeO3 Coupled Polysulfide Trapping in C/S Composite Cathode Material for Li-S Batteries as Large Efficiency and High Rate Performance
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: BFO coupling, C/S composite, Li-S battery, polysulfide trapping
We demonstrated the efficient coupling of BiFeO3 (BFO) ferroelectric material within the carbon−sulfur (C-S) composite cathode, where polysulfides are trapped in BFO mesh, reducing the polysulfide shuttle impact, and thus resulting in an improved cyclic performance and an increase in capacity in Li-S batteries. Here, the built-in internal field due to BFO enhances polysulfide trapping. The observation of a difference in the diffusion behavior of polysulfides in BFO-coupled composites suggests more efficient trapping in BFO-modified C-S electrodes compared to pristine C-S composite cathodes. The X-ray diffraction results of BFO−C-S composite cathodes show an orthorhombic structure, while Raman spectra substantiate efficient coupling of BFO in C-S composites, in agreement with SEM images, showing the interconnected network of submicron-size sulfur composites. Two plateaus were observed at 1.75 V and 2.1 V in the charge/discharge characteristics of BFO−C-S composite cathodes. The observed... [more]

Induction Heating for Variably Sized Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Materials through Load Modulation
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: induction heating, load flexible modulation, non-ferromagnetic materials, series resonant inverter
Induction heating (IH) is a process of heating the electrically conducting materials especially ferromagnetic materials with the help of electromagnetic induction through generating heat in an object by eddy currents. A well-entrenched way of IH is to design a heating system pertaining to the usage of ferromagnetic materials such as stainless steel, iron, etc., which restricts the end user’s choice of using utensils made of ferromagnetic only. This research article proposes a new scheme of induction heating that is equally effective for heating ferromagnetic and non-ferromagnetic materials such as aluminium and copper. This is achieved by having a competent IH system that embodies a series resonant inverter and controller where a competent flexible load modulation (FLM) is deployed. FLM facilitates change in operating frequency in accordance with the type of material chosen for heating. The recent attempts by researchers on all metal IH have not addressed much on the variable shapes an... [more]

The nth-Order Comprehensive Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis Methodology for Response-Coupled Forward/Adjoint Linear Systems (nth-CASAM-L): II. Illustrative Application
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: contributon-response flux, high-order adjoint sensitivity systems, high-order sensitivities, monoenergetic neutron/photon transport, particle detector response, particle leakage response, reaction rate response
This work illustrates the application of the nth-order comprehensive adjoint sensitivity analysis methodology for response-coupled forward/adjoint linear systems (abbreviated as “nth-CASAM-L”) to a paradigm model that describes the transmission of particles (neutrons and/or photons) through homogenized materials, as encountered in radiation protection and shielding. The first-, second-, and third-order sensitivities of responses that depend on both the forward and adjoint particle fluxes are obtained exactly, in closed-form, underscoring the principles and methodology underlying the nth-CASAM-L. The results presented in this work underscore the fundamentally important role of the nth-CASAM-L in the quest to overcome the “curse of dimensionality” in sensitivity analysis, uncertainty quantification and predictive modeling.

A Systematic Study to Assess Displacement Performance of a Naturally-Derived Surfactant in Flow Porous Systems
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: interfacial tension, micromodel and core flooding, non-ionic surfactant, salinity, wettability
For the first time, the present work assesses the feasibility of using Korean red ginseng root extract, a non-ionic surfactant, for the purposes of enhanced oil recovery (EOR). The surfactant is characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis. Pendant drop and sessile drop techniques are employed to study the oil−water interfacial tension (IFT) and wettability nature of the sandstone rock, respectively. In addition, oil recovery enhancement is investigated using micromodel and core floods. In the salt-free system, IFT measurements indicate that the surfactant carries a critical micelle concentration of 5 g/L. In a saline medium (up to 50 g/L), the addition of a surfactant with different concentrations leads to an IFT reduction of 47.28−84.21%. In a constant surfactant concentration, a contact angle reduction is observed in the range of 5.61−9.30°, depending on salinity rate, revealing a wettability alteration toward more water-wet. Surfactant flooding in the g... [more]

Increasing the Biogas Potential of Rapeseed Straw Using Pulsed Electric Field Pre-Treatment
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, biogas production, lignocellulose, methane fermentation, pulsed electric field, rapeseed straw
Due to the high availability of lignocellulosic biomass, which can be obtained from terrestrial plants, agricultural waste biomass, and the agro-food, paper or wood industries, its use for energy production by methane fermentation is economically and environmentally justified. However, due to their complex structures, lignocellulosic substrates have a low conversion factor to biogas. Therefore, scientists are still working on the development of new methods of the pre-treatment of lignocellulosic materials that will increase the biogas productivity from lignocellulosic biomass. The presented research focuses on the use of a pulsed electric field (PEF) to disintegrate rapeseed straw prior to the methane fermentation process. Scanning electron microscopy observation showed that, in the disintegrated sample, the extent of damage to the plant tissue was more severe than in the control sample. In the sample disintegrated for 7 min, the chemical oxygen demand increased from 4146 ± 75 mg/L to... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: activity, breeding blanket, DEMO, FISPACT, fusion, fusion
In fusion devices, such as European Demonstration Fusion Power Reactor (EU DEMO), primary neutrons can cause material activation due to the interaction between the source particles and the targeting material. Subsequently, the reactor’s inner components become activated. For safety and safe performance purposes, it is necessary to evaluate neutron-induced activities. Activities results from divertor reflector and liner plates are presented in this work. The purpose of liner shielding plates is to protect the vacuum vessel and magnet coils from neutrons. As for reflector plates, the function is to shield the cooling components under plasma-facing components from alpha particles, thermal effects, and impurities. Plates are made of Eurofer with a 3 mm layer of tungsten, while the water is used for cooling purposes. The calculations were performed using two EU DEMO MCNP (Monte Carlo N-Particles) models with different breeding blanket configurations: helium-cooled pebble bed (HCPB) and wate... [more]

Production of Ultra-High-Performance Concrete with Low Energy Consumption and Carbon Footprint Using Supplementary Cementitious Materials Instead of Silica Fume: A Review
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: ground granulated blast furnace slag, metakaolin, rice husk ashes, silica fume, ultra-high-performance concrete
The increase in cement production as a result of growing demand in the construction sector means an increase in energy consumption and CO2 emissions. These emissions are estimated at 7% of the global production of CO2. Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) has excellent mechanical and durability characteristics. Nevertheless, it is costly and affects the environment due to its high amount of cement, which may reach 800−1000 kg/m3. In order to reduce the cement content, silica fume (SF) was utilized as a partial alternative to cement in the production of UHPC. Nevertheless, SF is very expensive. Therefore, the researchers investigated the use of supplementary cementitious materials cheaper than SF. Very limited review investigates addressed the impact of such materials on different properties of UHPC in comparison to that of SF. Thus, this study aims to summarize the effectiveness of using some common supplementary cementitious materials, including fly ashes (FA), ground granulated bla... [more]

Effect of Burner Wall Material on Microjet Hydrogen Diffusion Flames near Extinction: A Numerical Study
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: burner wall, extinction, flame stability, micro diffusion flame, radiation
Characteristics of microjet hydrogen diffusion flames stabilized near extinction are investigated numerically. Two-dimensional simulations are carried out using a detailed reaction mechanism. The effect of burner wall material, thickness, and thermal radiation on flame characteristics such as flame height and maximum flame temperature are studied. Results show that the flame stabilizes at lower fuel jet velocities for quartz burner than steel or aluminum. Higher flame temperatures are observed for low conductive burners, whereas the flame length increases with an increase in thermal conductivity of the burner. Even though thermal radiation has a minor effect on flame characteristics like flame temperature and flame height, it significantly influences the flame structure for low conductive burner materials. The burner tip and its vicinity are substantially heated for low conductive burners. The effect of burner wall thickness on flame height is significant, whereas it has a more negligi... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: hydrogen energy, hydrogen purification, membrane separation, palladium, Pd-alloy
A thin Pd-based H2-permeable membrane is required to produce high-purity H2 with high efficiency. In this study, a porous Ni-supported Pd60Cu40 composite H2-permeable membrane was developed using a reverse build-up method to produce economical H2 purification. The thickness of the Pd60Cu40 alloy layer produced by the improved membrane production process reached 1.0 μm; it was thinner than the layer obtained in a previous study (3.7 μm). The membrane was characterized by scanning electron microscope, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer, H2 permeation test, and Auger microprobe analysis. The permeation tests were performed at 300−320 °C and 50−100 kPa with H2 introduced from the primary side. The H2 permeation flux was stable up to ~320 °C. The n-value was determined to be 1.0. The H2 permeance of the membrane was 2.70 × 10−6 mol m−2 s−1 Pa−1.0 at 320 °C, after 30 h, similar to those of other 2.2-µm-thick and 3.7-µm-thick Pd60Cu40 composite membranes, suggesting that... March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: emulsion, filtration properties, fractured reservoir, oil recovery factor, water cut, water shut-off composition
Increasing the field development efficiency of fractured reservoirs is a contemporary issue. This paper presents fundamental and exploratory research results in this field using modern high-tech experimental equipment from the “Arctic” Scientific Centre at the Saint Petersburg Mining University. Oil reserves in fractured reservoirs are enormous; however, they are classified as hard-to-recover. The before-mentioned reservoirs require a specific approach when selecting technologies to improve the efficiency of their development. In this paper, as a solution to the problem under discussion, we propose the use of a physicochemical method of developing fractured reservoirs based on the injection of a water shut-off agent to exclude highly permeable water-conducting fractures from the drainage process. This technology makes it possible to effectively include and develop previously undrained reservoir areas by directly controlling their filtration properties with the use of new highly efficie... March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: electromechanical characteristics, field-circuit coupling, inrush current, residual flux
When the electromagnetic transients occur in a power transformer, an inrush current is generated in its winding. The inrush current not only affects the performance of the transformer windings, but also affects the lifetime of the transformer. Many factors affect the inrush current, the most influential ones among which are the closing phase angle and the residual flux. In this paper, a dry-type transformer simulation model is built to analyze the influence of the inrush current on the performance of transformer windings during no-load reclosing conditions. Firstly, the inrush current was generated in the transformer windings during the no-load reclosing operation under different residual fluxes. Secondly, the field-circuit coupling 3d finite element method is used to analyze the electromagnetic force at different locations of the transformer windings under the influence of different inrush currents. The results of winding structural parameter variations are obtained through electromag... [more]

Asphaltene Inhibition and Flow Improvement of Crude Oil with a High Content of Asphaltene and Wax by Polymers Bearing Ultra-Long Side Chain
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: asphaltene precipitation, high asphaltene and high wax content of crude oil, rheology, wax crystallization
A high content of asphaltene and wax in crude oil leads to difficulties in the recovery and transportation of crude oil due to the precipitation of asphaltenes and the deposition of waxes. Comb-like polymers were found to be capable of inhibiting the aggregation of asphaltenes and crystallization of waxes. In this work, comb-like bipolymers of α-olefins/ultra-long chain (C18, C22 and C28) alkyl acrylate were synthesized and characterized by FT-IR and 1H NMR spectra. The results show that, for a model oil containing asphaltene, the initial precipitation point (IPP) of asphaltene was prolonged by UV, and the asphaltene particle size was reduced after adding the biopolymers, as revealed by dynamitic light scattering (DLS). The bipolymer containing the longer alkyl chain had a better asphaltene inhibition effect. However, DSC and rheological results show that the wax appearance temperature (WAT) of the typical high asphaltene and high wax content of crude oil was obviously reduced by addin... [more]

Estimation of Phase Noise Transfer Function
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: frequency synthesis, phase noise, RF device modeling and characterization
Quantifying frequency converters’ residual phase noise is essential in various applications, including radar systems, high-speed digital communication, or particle accelerators. Multi-input signal source analyzers can perform such measurements out of the box, but the high cost limits their accessibility. Based on an analysis of phase noise transmission theory and the capabilities of popular instrumentation, we propose a technique extending the functionality of single-input devices. The method supplements absolute noise measurements with estimates of the phase noise transfer function (also called the jitter transfer function), allowing the calculation of residual noise. The details of the hardware setup used for the method verification are presented. The injection of single-tone and pseudo-random modulations to the test signal is examined. Prospects for the Development of the Russian Rare-Earth Metal Industry in View of the Global Energy Transition—A Review
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: clean technologies, critical materials, demand, energy transition, green economy, low-carbon development, rare-earth metals
Global energy transition trends are reflected not only in oil and gas market dynamics, but also in the development of related sectors. They influence the demand for various types of metals and minerals. It is well-known that clean technologies require far more metals than their counterparts relying on fossil fuels. Nowadays, rare-earth metals (REMs) have become part and parcel of green technologies as they are widely used in wind turbine generators, motors for electric vehicles, and permanent magnet generators, and there are no materials to substitute them. Consequently, growth in demand for this group of metals can be projected in the near future. The topic discussed is particularly relevant for Russia. On the one hand, current trends associated with the global energy transition affect the country’s economy, which largely depends on hydrocarbon exports. On the other hand, Russia possesses huge REM reserves, which may take the country on a low-carbon development path. However, they are... [more]

Keywords: comparative study, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, equivalent circuit model, proton exchange membrane fuel cell
Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is one of the important tools for the performance analysis and diagnosis of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. The equivalent circuit model is an effective method for electrochemical impedance spectroscopy resolution. In this paper, four typical equivalent circuit models are selected to comprehensively compare and analyze the difference in the fitting results of the models for the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy under different working conditions (inlet pressure, stoichiometry, and humidity) from the perspective of the fitting accuracy, change trend of the model parameters, and the goodness of fit. The results show that the fitting accuracy of the model with the Warburg element is the best for all under each working condition. When considering the goodness of fit, the model with constant phase components is the best choice for fitting electrochemical impedance spectroscopy under different inlet pressure and air stoichiometry. Methods of Thermal Treatment of Radioactive Waste
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: heat delivery, mass reduction of the waste, radioactive waste, thermal methods, waste immobilization, waste management
Throughout the world, and especially in the European Union, numerous technologies for the thermal treatment of radioactive waste are available or being developed. These technologies can be applied to a large range of different radioactive waste streams, including non-standard types of waste that present specific waste management challenges. Thermal treatment can result in a significant reduction in volume and hazard, which are beneficial for safe storage and disposal. Thermal treatment also removes organic material that can form complexing agents and increase the mobility of radionuclides in the landfill. In the paper, basic thermal techniques are presented, and some examples of the installations are shown. Common knowledge of these methods may result in an increased public acceptance of nuclear energy in a country just introducing it, as Poland is.

Scale Effect on Producing Gaseous and Liquid Chemical Fuels via CO2 Reduction
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, CO, electrochemical, formate, fuel
Producing chemical fuels from sunlight is a sustainable way to utilize solar energy and reduce carbon emissions. Within the current photovoltaic-electrolysis or photoelectrochemical-based solar fuel generation system, electrochemical CO2 reduction is the key step. Although there has been important progress in developing new materials and devices, scaling up electrochemical CO2 reduction is essential to promote the industrial application of this technology. In this work, we use Ag and In as the representative electrocatalyst for producing gas and liquid products in both small and big electrochemical cells. We find that gas production is blocked more easily than liquid products when scaling up the electrochemical cell. Simulation results show that the generated gas product, CO, forms bubbles on the surface of the electrocatalyst, thus blocking the transport of CO2, while there is no such trouble for producing the liquid product such as formate. Straw is treated as agricultural waste, and it is available in almost every region of Poland. A total of 30 million tons of straw is produced per year, of which there is a surplus of approximately 13.5 million tons of undeveloped straw. For energy purposes, straw from cereals or rapeseed is most often used. When analyzing scientific publications, it was noticed that, in Poland, large amounts of oat straw are produced, and there is no alternative use for it. Hence, we conducted research to determine the energy value of oat straw. Raw material was obtained from an individual farm from 2018 to 2020. Selected energy parameters for straw burned alone (100%) or co-fired with coal were analyzed in the following weight proportions: 70/30, 80/20, and 90/10 coal/oat straw. It was shown that changing weather conditions, in particular years, had a modifying effect on some of the energy parameters of straw. The calorific value of straw was lower than that of coal, but its impact on environmental po... [more]

Keywords: Energy Efficiency, fillings, glazing
The necessity of having windows on any building’s façade is not questionable. However, not every window is suitable for any building. The selection of an adequate window must include the analysis of various factors—the most important ones are the type of window (e.g., single or double glazing); filling gas in cavities (e.g., air, argon or some other gas); and placing, i.e., orientation of a window on a façade (facing north, south, or east, etc.). The research presented in this paper is dealing with the calculation of the window thermal loading for the cities of Kragujevac and Bor in Serbia and Žilina in Slovakia. These three cities were selected because they belong to different climate regions, according to the Köppen−Geiger climatic classification.
