Effect of Temperature on Densification Pressure and the Unit Density in Production of Corn Straw Pellet with a Post-Heating Method
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Biomass, corn straw, densification, densification pressure
In the biomass densification process, a lot of energy is needed to prevent its spring-back and to overcome the friction between the material and the channel surface of the die so as to build up pressure. However, moisture, particle size, temperature, and type of material all influence the densification pressure, pellet quality, and the density. The research was aimed to find out how the densification pressure and density were affected by the die temperature based on an open-end densification method using a self-developed pellet extruder. When the piston fixed in the front of the extruder moved in a reciprocating way, the raw material was pressed into the opening die, which had a heater wrapped up. Crushed corn straw with a particle size under 4 mm and with a given moisture content of 10% was used to be compacted by the extruder. The results showed that with the increase of the die temperature, the value of densification pressure decreased; however, the quality of pellets was not good a... [more]

Simulation Study of Solidification in the Shell-And-Tube Energy Storage System with a Novel Dual-PCM Configuration
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: dual-PCM, Energy Storage, heat exchanger, numerical, phase change material, solidification
This study proposes a novel dual-PCM configuration with outstanding solidification response in a horizontal shell-and-tube energy storage system. To demonstrate that the proposed PCM configuration is superior in its thermal responses, results from a range of numerical simulations are presented and compared between different configurations of dual-PCM. As the melting/solidus point is a crucial factor for the solidification rate, dual PCMs are chosen such that the average of their melting point is equal to the melting point of the single-PCM in the reference case. Additionally, equal-area sectors are considered for all cases to ensure the same quantities of PCMs are compared. The temporal liquid fraction and temperature contours reveal that solidification is delayed in the upper half of the system due to strong natural convection motions. Therefore, a dual-PCM configuration is offered to improve the solidification rate in this region and accelerate the full solidification process. Result... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: lower Cambrian, lower Silurian, marine shale, pore properties, pore types, porosity development mechanism
Lower Cambrian shale and lower Silurian shale are both typical of oil-prone kerogen and siliceous composition, but different in thermal maturities. Porosity differences were determined in marine shales between the two shales. Measurements were utilized including organic geochemistry, XRD, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and N2 gas adsorption. Pore volume (PV) of lower Silurian shale was approximately 1.5 times higher than that of lower Cambrian shale, and pore surface area (PSA) of lower Silurian shale was almost 2.5 times higher than that of lower Cambrian shale. Lower Cambrian shale and lower Silurian shale possess similar materials, but distinctive thermal degrees. Evolution mechanisms of different types of pores, especially organic matter (OM)-hosted pores, may trigger this different pore features. Pores of rigid framework are the residue of primary interparticle pores during the burial history. Pores associated with clay flakes can be preserved well adjacent to rigid grains or... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: barium hydroxide octahydrate, calcium chloride hexahydrate, cold storage, glycerol
CaCl2·6H2O is selected as the original substrate for research, and a new composite phase change material (CPCM) suitable for air-conditioning was developed through experiments. The new modified CaCl2·6H2O CPCM uses glycerol as a temperature regulator and barium hydroxide octahydrate as a nucleating agent. The experimental results show that when the mass ratio of CaCl2·6H2O to glycerol is 85:15, the melting temperature of the CPCM is 11.8 °C and the enthalpy of phase change is 112.86 J/g. The chemical composition of the CPCM was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, which confirmed that the material was successfully developed. When the amount of barium hydroxide octahydrate nucleating agent was 1.0 wt.%, the supercooling of the CPCM decreased to 1.22 °C. CPCM still show good stability after 50 thermal cycles and can be used in practical production.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: BiCuSeO, Machine Learning, thermoelectric materials, thermoelectric properties
Machine learning (ML) has increasingly received interest as a new approach to accelerating development in materials science. It has been applied to thermoelectric materials research for discovering new materials and designing experiments. Generally, the amount of data in thermoelectric materials research, especially experimental data, is very small leading to an undesirable ML model. In this work, the ML model for predicting ZT of the doped BiCuSeO was implemented. The method to improve the model was presented step-by-step. This included normalizing the experimental ZT of the doped BiCuSeO with the pristine BiCuSeO, selecting data for the BiCuSeO doped at Bi-site only, and limiting important features for the model construction. The modified model showed significant improvement, with the R2 of 0.93, compared to the original model (R2 of 0.57). The model was validated and used to predict the ZT of the unknown doped BiCuSeO compounds. The predicted result was logically justified based on... [more]

Superior Electrochemical Performance of Two-Dimensional RGO/Cu/Cu2O Composite as Anode Material for Lithium-Ion Batteries
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: anode material, copper/copper oxide, LIBs, nanocomposite, reduced graphene oxide
In recent years, graphene has attracted the interest of many researchers working on LIB anode materials owing to its unique 2D structure, thermal stability, and fast electron transfer. In this work, RGO/Cu/Cu2O nanocomposites were synthesized through a hydrothermal procedure. The as-prepared nanocomposites exhibited a high lithium storage capacity with improved cycling stability and great rate performance, i.e., the discharge capacity was 371.8 mAh/g after 100 cycles at a current density of 500 mA/g. These excellent properties were associated with the sheet structure symmetry of graphene enriched with the multifunctional Cu-Cu2O component, which prevented aggregation and accommodated the volume changes of the anode material during the charge−discharge tests. The RGO/Cu/Cu2O composite conferred to the LIB anode the ability to resist electrode cracking. The approach proposed in this paper can be also generalized for the synthesis of other carbon-based anode materials for LIBs.

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: graphitic nitride, Li-S cells, polysulfide absorbing material, polysulfide shuttle, reduced graphene oxide, sulfur cathode composite
Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries can provide at least three times higher energy density than lithium-ion (Li-Ion) batteries. However, Li-S batteries suffer from a phenomenon called the polysulfide shuttle (PSS) that prevents the commercialization of these batteries. The PSS has several undesirable effects, such as depletion of active materials from the cathode, deleterious reactions between the lithium anode and electrolyte soluble lithium polysulfides, resulting in unfavorable coulombic efficiency, and poor cycle life of the battery. In this study, a new sulfur cathode composed of graphitic nitride as the polysulfide absorbing material and reduced graphene oxide as the conductive carbon host has been synthesized to rectify the problems associated with the PSS effect. This composite cathode design effectively retains lithium polysulfide intermediates within the cathode structure. The S@RGO/GN cathode displayed excellent capacity retention compared to similar RGO-based sulfur cathodes pu... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: anchoring interface, fully encapsulated bolt, multi-strata, pull-out test
One of the important factors affecting the anchoring force of the end encapsulated bolt is the mechanical properties of the rock formation at the anchoring end. For the fully encapsulated bolt, its bearing performance is closely related to the mechanical properties of the bolt passing through the rock stratum and its permutation mode. In this study, a series of laboratory pull-out tests of multi-strata anchorage systems was carried out based on an actual engineering background. The bearing performances and failure mechanisms of the multi-strata anchorage system under different anchoring methods and combinations of rock stratum were studied. The evolution law of the axial force and shear stress of the Agent-Rock interface was also analyzed. The test results showed that, for end encapsulation, changes in the mechanical properties of the rock strata at the anchoring end caused differences in bearing capacity, while full-length encapsulation markedly reduced the disparities. An NMR-Based Method for Multiphase Methane Characterization in Coals
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Coal, free methane, low-field NMR, paramagnetic mineral
Discriminating multiphase methane (adsorbed and free phases) in coals is crucial for evaluating the optimal gas recovery strategies of coalbed methane (CBM) reservoirs. However, the existing volumetric-based adsorption isotherm method only provides the final methane adsorption result, limiting real-time dynamic characterization of multiphase methane in the methane adsorption process. In this study, via self-designed nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) isotherm adsorption experiments, we present a new method to evaluate the dynamic multiphase methane changes in coals. The results indicate that the T2 distributions of methane in coals involve three different peaks, labeled as P1 (T2 < 8 ms), P2 (T2 = 20−300 ms), and P3 (T2 > 300 ms) peaks, corresponding to the adsorbed phase methane, free phase methane between particles, and free phase methane in the sample cell, respectively.
