Uncovering Hidden Factors in Electricity Consumption Based on Gaussian Mixture Estimation
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Gaussian mixture, load characterization, multimodal distribution, residential load
Load characteristics play an essential role in the planning of power generation and distribution. Various undiscovered factors, which could be socioeconomic, geographic, or climatic, make it possible to describe the electricity demand by a multimodal distribution. This letter proposes a novel method based on multimodal distributions to characterize the hidden factors in electricity consumption. Consequently, a new approach is developed to evaluate the impact of the underlying factors of electricity consumption. Some quantifiable and predictable factors are analyzed in developing multimodal distribution to describe the expected demand. Simulations based on synthetic and real-world data have been conducted to demonstrate the usefulness and robustness of the proposed method.

Conversion of Carbohydrates in Lignocellulosic Biomass after Chemical Pretreatment
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: biogas production, carbohydrate yield, cellulose, holocellulose, pentosans
The aim of the study was to determine the quantitative and qualitative changes taking place in biomass components actively participating in methane fermentation, i.e., in carbohydrates, as a result of chemical pretreatment. Analyses were conducted on agricultural waste (corn stover, also called corn straw, and corncobs) as materials most commonly used in methane fermentation, as well as poplar wood, a material relatively rarely used in biogas production. Pretreatment with the aim of increasing efficiency of methane fermentation was carried out with the use of acid and alkaline solutions of different concentrations. The effect of pretreatment on carbohydrates was analyzed based on the quantitative and qualitative changes in this component. Due to the structural heterogeneity of carbohydrates, their varied reactivity and fermentability were determined in terms of holocellulose, cellulose, and pentosans. The chemical structure of cellulose was also analyzed. It is shown in this study that... [more]

Wearable Shoe-Mounted Piezoelectric Energy Harvester for a Self-Powered Wireless Communication System
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: energy harvesting, piezoelectric materials, shoe energy generator, wearable device, wireless communication
This study covers a self-powered wireless communication system that is powered using a piezoelectric energy harvester (PEH) in a shoe. The lead-zirconate-titanate (PZT) ceramic of the PEH was coated with UV resin, which (after curing under UV light) allowed it to withstand periodic pressure. The PEH was designed with a simple structure and placed under the sole of a shoe. The durability of the PEH was tested using a pushing tester and its applicability in shoes was examined. With periodic compression of 60 kg, the PEH produced 52 μW of energy at 280 kΩ. The energy generated by the PEH was used to power a wireless transmitter. A step-down converter with an under-voltage lockout function was used to gather enough energy to operate the wireless transmitter. The transmitter can be operated initially after walking 24 steps. After the transmitter has been activated, it can be operated again after 8 steps. Because a control center receives signals from the transmitter, it is possible to check... [more]

Ensemble Learning for Predicting TOC from Well-Logs of the Unconventional Goldwyer Shale
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: canning basin, ensemble learning, Goldwyer shale, TOC, well-logs
Precise estimation of total organic carbon (TOC) is extremely important for the successful characterization of an unconventional shale reservoir. Indirect traditional continuous TOC prediction methods from well-logs fail to provide accurate TOC in complex and heterogeneous shale reservoirs. A workflow is proposed to predict a continuous TOC profile from well-logs through various ensemble learning regression models in the Goldwyer shale formation of the Canning Basin, WA. A total of 283 TOC data points from ten wells is available from the Rock-Eval analysis of the core specimen where each sample point contains three to five petrophysical logs. The core TOC varies largely, ranging from 0.16 wt % to 4.47 wt % with an average of 1.20 wt %. In addition to the conventional MLR method, four supervised machine learning methods, i.e., ANN, RF, SVM, and GB are trained, validated, and tested for continuous TOC prediction using the ensemble learning approach. To ensure robust TOC prediction, an ag... [more]

Comparison of How Graphite and Shungite Affect Thermal, Mechanical, and Dielectric Properties of Dielectric Elastomer-Based Composites
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: composites, dielectric constant, dielectric elastomer, graphite, shungite
The aim of this work involved comparing the effect graphite and shungite have on the properties of dielectric elastomer-based materials. For this reason, dielectric elastomer−Sylgard (S) was filled with 1, 3, 5, 10, and 15 wt.% of graphite (G) and shungite (Sh). The structure of the obtained materials was studied by means of scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The influence of the introduced additives on the thermal stability of the obtained composites was evaluated using thermogravimetry. Moreover, the mechanical properties and the dielectric constant of the elastomer with an addition of graphite and shungite were determined. Obtained results allowed us to establish that the presence of graphite as well as shungite significantly influences mechanical as well as dielectric properties. Additionally, the optimum mass of additives, allowing to increase the dielectric constant without the significant decrease of strain at break, was indicated. In the case of materials... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: density functional theory, excited state calculations, MoS2@ZnO and WS2@ZnO nanostructures, photoabsorption, photocatalyst
Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) MoS2 and WS2 monolayers (MLs) deposited atop of crystalline zinc oxide (ZnO) and graphene-like ZnO (g-ZnO) substrates have been investigated by means of density functional theory (DFT) using PBE and GLLBSC exchange-correlation functionals. In this work, the electronic structure and optical properties of studied hybrid nanomaterials are described in view of the influence of ZnO substrates thickness on the MoS2@ZnO and WS2@ZnO two-dimensional (2D) nanocomposites. The thicker ZnO substrate not only triggers the decrease of the imaginary part of dielectric function relatively to more thinner g-ZnO but also results in the less accumulated charge density in the vicinity of the Mo and W atoms at the conduction band minimum. Based on the results of our calculations, we predict that MoS2 and WS2 monolayers placed at g-ZnO substrate yield essential enhancement of the photoabsorption in the visible region of solar spectra and, thus, can be used as a promising... Subject: Materials
Keywords: bioenergy, Biomass, densification, formula parameters, orchard residues
Biomass-based pellet is an important source of renewable energy. In this study, to obtain the high-quality fuel pellet via the densification of pruned branches of fruit trees, we investigated the optimization of blending ratios for different raw materials using branches from jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.), which is a widely distributed waste biomass resource in China. Through the characterization of raw materials and pellets, the effects of different raw materials on the storage, transportation, and combustion performances of the pellets can be understood. The cost evaluation analysis showed that the two optimized, co-densified pellets had great cost advantages compared with the pure jujube branch pellets. This indicates the potential industrial value of optimized pellets. The results of this study can help to improve the application value of orchard residues and generate an additional profit for fruit plantations, simultaneously avoiding the environmental damage caused by its open com... Subject: Materials
Keywords: computer visualization, CST Studio, electromagnetic coupling, electromagnetic field, frequency selective surfaces, metamaterial unit cell, metamaterials, split-ring resonator, SRR structure, subreflector
Metamaterials are artificially structured composite media with a unique electromagnetic (EM) response that is absent from naturally occurring materials, which appears counterintuitive and aggravates traditional difficulties in perceiving the behavior of EM waves. The aim of this study was to better understand the interaction of EM waves with metamaterials by virtual visualizing the accompanying physical phenomena. Over the years, virtual visualization of EM wave interactions with metamaterials has proven to be a powerful tool for explaining many phenomena that occur in metamaterials. In this study, we performed virtual visualization of the interaction of an EM plane wave with a split-ring resonator (SRR) metamaterial structure, employing CST Studio software for modeling and comprehensive simulations of high-frequency EM fields of 3D objects. The SRR structure was designed to have its magnetic resonance at the frequency f = 23.69 GHz, which is of interest for antennas supporting wireles... [more]

A Method for the Segregation of Emulsion Inner Phase Droplets Using Imbibition Process in Porous Material
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: dispersion, droplet segregation, emulsion, fibrous material, imbibition, porous media
The process of forming an emulsion is an energy-consuming process. The smaller the internal phase droplets we want to produce and the closer the droplets are in size to each other (monodisperse), the more energy we need to put into the system. Generating energy carries a high economic cost, as well as a high environmental footprint. Considering the fact that dispersive systems are widely used in various fields of life, it is necessary to search for other, less-energy-intensive methods that will allow the creation of dispersive systems with adequate performance and minimal energy input. Therefore, an alternative way to obtain emulsions characterized by small droplet sizes was proposed by using an imbibition process in porous materials. By applying this technique, it was possible to obtain average droplet sizes at least half the size of the base emulsion while reducing the polydispersity by about 40%. Oil-in-water emulsions in which vegetable oil or kerosene is the oily phase were tested... [more]

Application of Porous Materials for CO2 Reutilization: A Review
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: CO2 reutilization, electrochemical reduction, photochemical reduction, porous materials, solar thermochemical conversion
CO2 reutilization processes contribute to the mitigation of CO2 as a potent greenhouse gas (GHG) through reusing and converting it into economically valuable chemical products including methanol, dimethyl ether, and methane. Solar thermochemical conversion and photochemical and electrochemical CO2 reduction processes are emerging technologies in which solar energy is utilized to provide the energy required for the endothermic dissociation of CO2. Owing to the surface-dependent nature of these technologies, their performance is significantly reliant on the solid reactant/catalyst accessible surface area. Solid porous structures either entirely made from the catalyst or used as a support for coating the catalyst/solid reactants can increase the number of active reaction sites and, thus, the kinetics of CO2 reutilization reactions. This paper reviews the principles and application of porous materials for CO2 reutilization pathways in solar thermochemical, photochemical, and electrochemica... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: bifunctional catalysts, Biomass, hydrodeoxygenation, hydropyrolysis, MoO3
Catalytic hydropyrolysis via the introduction of external hydrogen into catalytic pyrolysis process using hydrodeoxygenation catalysts is one of the major approaches of bio-oil upgrading. In this study, hydrodeoxygenation of acetone over Mo/HZSM-5 and HZSM-5 were investigated with focus on the influence of hydrogen pressure and catalyst deactivation. It is found that doped MoO3 could prolong the catalyst activity due to the suppression of coke formation. The influence of hydrogen pressure on catalytic HDO of acetone was further studied. Hydrogen pressure of 30 bar effectively prolonged catalyst activity while decreased the coke deposition over catalyst. The coke formation over the HZSM-5 and Mo/HZSM-5 under 30 bar hydrogen pressure decreased 66% and 83%, respectively, compared to that under atmospheric hydrogen pressure. Compared to the test with the HZSM-5, 35% higher yield of aliphatics and 60% lower coke were obtained from the Mo/HZSM-5 under 30 bar hydrogen pressure. Characterizati... [more]

The Effect of Dynamic Cold Storage Packed Bed on Liquid Air Energy Storage in an Experiment Scale
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cold storage, dynamic characteristic, liquid air energy storage, packed bed
Liquid air energy storage (LAES) is one of the most promising large-scale energy storage technologies for the decarburization of networks. When electricity is needed, the liquid air is utilized to generate electricity through expansion, while the cold energy from liquid air evaporation is stored and recovered in the air liquefaction process. The packed bed filled with rocks/pebbles for cold storage is more suitable for real-world application in the near future compared to the fluids for cold storage. A standalone LAES system with packed bed energy storage is proposed in our previous work. However, the utilization of pressurized air for heat transfer fluid in the cold storage packed bed (CSPB) is confusing, and the effect of the CSPB on the system level should be further discussed. To address these issues, the dynamic performance of the CSPB is analyzed with the physical properties of the selected cold storage materials characterized. The accuracy of the new equation was validated through a simulation model in the second part of the study. Another simulation model was also used to clarify the design rules of the n-type layer in a wide band gap CIG(SSe)2 solar cell. Subject: Materials
Keywords: critical materials, extraction processes, ionic liquids, recovery from e-waste, recycling
Population growth has led to an increased demand for raw minerals and energy resources; however, their supply cannot easily be provided in the same proportions. Modern technologies contain materials that are becoming more finely intermixed because of the broadening palette of elements used, and this outcome creates certain limitations for recycling. The recovery and separation of individual elements, critical materials and valuable metals from complex systems requires complex energy-consuming solutions with many hazardous chemicals used. Significant pressure is brought to bear on the improvement of separation and recycling approaches by the need to balance sustainability, efficiency, and environmental impacts. The Impact of Torrefaction Temperature on the Physical-Chemical Properties of Residual Exotic Fruit (Avocado, Mango, Lychee) Seeds
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: biomass residues, Energy, exotic fruit seeds, torrefaction, waste biomass valorization
A large portion of food loss and waste (FSL) is comprised of seeds and stones. Exotic fruits such as mangoes, lychees and avocados, in which the seeds account for a significant part of the weight and volume of the entire product, are most affected by this problem. The seeds contain a large quantity of polyphenols and essential nutrients, which makes them a good material for extraction. However, conventional extraction techniques are considered time-consuming, and therefore significantly limit their use on an industrial scale. An alternative method of managing the seeds may be their energy utilization. In this study, torrefaction was proposed as a method for the valorization of exotic fruit seeds (mango, lychee, avocado). Thus, the influence of torrefaction temperature (200−300 °C) on the physical-chemical properties of substrates was investigated. The obtained results revealed that, in relation to the unprocessed raw materials, the torreficates are characterized by improved hydrophobic... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: carbon nanotubes, hybrid cathodes, lithium-ion batteries, nanocomposite materials, vanadium pentoxide, xerogel
Vanadium pentoxide (V2O5)-anchored single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) composites have been developed through a simple sol−gel process, followed by hydrothermal treatment. The resulting material is suitable for use in flexible ultra-high capacity electrode applications for lithium-ion batteries. The unique combination of V2O5 with 0.2 wt.% of SWCNT offers a highly conductive three-dimensional network. This ultimately alleviates the low lithium-ion intercalation seen in V2O5 itself and facilitates vanadium redox reactions. The integration of SWCNTs into the layered structure of V2O5 leads to a high specific capacity of 390 mAhg−1 at 0.1 C between 1.8 to 3.8 V, which is close to the theoretical capacity of V2O5 (443 mAhg−1).
