Becky Corley, Sofia Koukoura, James Carroll, Alasdair McDonald
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: condition monitoring, Fault Detection, Machine Learning, thermal modelling, wind energy, wind turbine gearbox
This research aims to bring together thermal modelling and machine learning approaches to improve the understanding on the operation and fault detection of a wind turbine gearbox. Recent fault detection research has focused on machine learning, black box approaches. Although it can be successful, it provides no indication of the physical behaviour. In this paper, thermal network modelling was applied to two datasets using SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) temperature data, with the aim of detecting a fault one month before failure. A machine learning approach was used on the same data to compare the results to thermal modelling. The results found that thermal network modelling could successfully detect a fault in many of the turbines examined and was validated by the machine learning approach for one of the datasets. For that same dataset, it was found that combining the thermal model losses and the machine learning approach by using the modelled losses as a feature in t... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: ecological, ecological footprint, economic, energy density, energy policy, regression, social pillars
The paper analyzes the impact of energy consumption on the three pillars of sustainable development in 74 countries. The main methodological challenge in this research is the choice of a single integral indicator for assessing the social component of sustainable development. Disability-adjusted life year (DALY), ecological footprint, and GDP (Gross domestic product) are used to characterize the social, ecological, and economical pillars. The concept of physics, namely the concept of density (specific gravity), is used. It characterizes the ratio of the mass of a substance to its volume, i.e., reflects the saturation of a certain volume with this substance. Thus, to assess the relationship between energy consumption and the three foundations of sustainable development, it is proposed to determine the energy density of the indicators DALY, the ecological footprint, and GDP. The reaction to changes in energy consumption is described by the elasticity of energy density functions, calculate... [more]

Keywords: 2m + 1 point estimate approach, equilibrium optimizer technique, micro-grids, probabilistic energy management, renewable energy sources
Recently, micro-grids (MGs) have had a great impact on power system issues due to their clear environmental and economic advantages. This paper proposes an equilibrium optimizer (EO) technique for solving the energy management problem of MGs incorporating energy storage devices concerning the emissions from renewable energy sources (RES) of MGs. Because of the imprecision and uncertainties related to the RESs, market prices, and forecast load demand, the optimization problem is described in a probabilistic manner using a 2m + 1 point estimation approach. Then, the EO approach is utilized for solving the probabilistic energy management (EM) problem. The EM problem is described according to the market policy on the basis of minimizing the total operating cost and emission from RESs through optimal settings of the power generated from distributed generators (DGs) and grids connected under the condition of satisfying the operational constraints of the system. The proposed EO is evaluated b... [more]

Keywords: high temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell, LPG reforming, Nonlinear Model Predictive Control, power system
The integration and control of energy systems for power generation consists of multiple heterogeneous subsystems, such as chemical, electrochemical, and thermal, and contains challenges that arise from the multi-way interactions due to complex dynamic responses among the involved subsystems. The main motivation of this work is to design the control system for an autonomous automated and sustainable system that meets a certain power demand profile. A systematic methodology for the integration and control of a hybrid system that converts liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to hydrogen, which is subsequently used to generate electrical power in a high-temperature fuel cell that charges a Li-Ion battery unit, is presented. An advanced nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) framework is implemented to achieve this goal. The operational objective is the satisfaction of power demand while maintaining operation within a safe region and ensuring thermal and chemical balance. The proposed NMPC fram... [more]

Keywords: EPSO, EV scheduling, EVCS, rule-based
This paper proposes a flexible framework for scheduling and real time operation of electric vehicle charging stations (EVCS). The methodology applies a multi-objective evolutionary particle swarm optimization algorithm (EPSO) for electric vehicles (EVs) scheduling based on a day-ahead scenario. Then, real time operation is managed based on a rule-based (RB) approach. Two types of consumer were considered: EV owners with a day-ahead request for charging (scheduled consumers, SCh) and non-scheduling users (NSCh). EPSO has two main objectives: cost reduction and reduce overloading for high demand in grid. The EVCS has support by photovoltaic generation (PV), battery energy storage systems (BESS), and the distribution grid. The method allows the selection between three types of charging, distributing it according to EV demand. The model estimates SC remaining state of charge (SoC) for arriving to EVCS and then adjusts the actual difference by the RB. The results showed a profit for EVCS by... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: domain decomposition, Model Reduction, neutron diffusion equation, reactor physics, reduced-order modelling
Solving the neutron transport equations is a demanding computational challenge. This paper combines reduced-order modelling with domain decomposition to develop an approach that can tackle such problems. The idea is to decompose the domain of a reactor, form basis functions locally in each sub-domain and construct a reduced-order model from this. Several different ways of constructing the basis functions for local sub-domains are proposed, and a comparison is given with a reduced-order model that is formed globally. A relatively simple one-dimensional slab reactor provides a test case with which to investigate the capabilities of the proposed methods. The results show that domain decomposition reduced-order model methods perform comparably with the global reduced-order model when the total number of reduced variables in the system is the same with the potential for the offline computational cost to be significantly less expensive.

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: condensation, earth to air heat exchanger (EAHE), relative humidity (RH), thermal performance, uniformity
Earth to air heat exchangers are widely utilized to cool or heat passive buildings for energy savings. They often need to deal with high humidity air conditions, especially in the greenhouse due to plant transpiration, and the condensation phenomenon is frequently observed during the cooling process. To evaluate the effect of humidity and condensation on thermal performance, a three dimensional computational fluid dynamic (3D-CFD) model was developed. The distribution of relative humidity in each pipe was investigated, and the impact of inlet air relative humidity on the integrated performance of the earth to air heat exchanger was discussed. The effects of inlet air temperature and volume flow rate were also analyzed. Moreover, the influence of the heat exchanger configurations on the performance of the air condensation was researched. The results indicated that condensation had few effects on the airflow distribution uniformity of the earth to air heat exchanger, while it acted obser... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bioreactors, carbon monoxide, composting, emission modeling, employees safety, occupational health and safety
Advanced technologies call for composting indoors for minimized impact on the surrounding environment. However, enclosing compost piles inside halls may cause the accumulation of toxic pollutants, including carbon monoxide (CO). Thus, there is a need to assess the occupational risk to workers that can be exposed to CO concentrations > 300 ppm at the initial stage of the process. The objectives were to (1) develop a model of CO accumulation in the headspace of the bioreactor during organic waste composting and (2) assess the impact of headspace ventilation of enclosed compost. The maximum allowable CO level inside the bioreactor headspace for potential short-term occupational exposure up to 10 min was 100 ppm. The composting was modeled in the horizontal static reactor over 14 days in seven scenarios, differing in the ratio of headspace-to-waste volumes (H:W) (4:1, 3:1, 2:1, 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 1:4). Headspace CO concentration exceeded 100 ppm in each variant with the maximum value of 36.1%... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy consumption, Energy Efficiency, hydraulic lifting systems, scissor lift
The article presents the experimental investigation of low-lifting capacity hydraulic scissor lift energy consumption. The analysis is based on experimental tests of two individual drives of the scissor lift: the conventional one and the variable-speed electro-hydraulic one. The investigation focuses on the study of the total energy consumption for lifting and lowering the scissor lift with different masses of transported cargo and also power consumptions of each element supplying these systems. Particular attention was paid to the significant impact of power supply on each control component as the main factor of reduction in the energetic efficiency of the low-lifting capacity scissor lift. A comparison of both drives indicated that the mass of transported cargo has a significant influence on the choice of the drive used. Results of the research show that significant energetic savings are obtained, as the modernized propulsion system consumes 67% energy of the standard one. A decrease... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: closed hydraulic system (CHS), electro-hydraulic servo pump control system (EHSPCS), permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), temperature field, thermal balance
The electro-hydraulic servo pump control system (EHSPCS) is a high-performance control unit that integrates a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) and a closed hydraulic system (CHS). The design features of high integration and a high power-weight ratio lead to the poor heat dissipation capacity and high thermal balance temperature of the system. Excessive temperature will seriously affect the system’s performance and service life. Therefore, the thermal balance analysis method of the EHSPCS under different loads and different wind speeds was proposed in this paper. Firstly, the PMSM and CHS were taken as research objects to analyze the heating source of the system. The thermal power model was established, and the calculation was performed. The variation rule of the thermal power generated by each component with the load torque under the typical rotating speed was obtained. Secondly, the system’s temperature field thermal balance solution model was established. ANSYS and AMESim so... [more]

This paper presents Nyström minimum kernel risk-sensitive loss (NysMKRSL) based control of a three-phase four-wire grid-tied dual-stage PV-hybrid energy storage system, under varying conditions such as irradiation variation, unbalanced load, and abnormal grid voltage. The Voltage Source Converter (VSC) control enables the system to perform multifunctional operations such as reactive power compensation, load balancing, power balancing, and harmonics elimination while maintaining Unity Power Factor (UPF). The proposed VSC control delivers more accurate weights with fewer oscillations, hence reducing overall losses and providing better stability to the system. The seamless control with the Hybrid Energy Storage System (HESS) facilitates the system’s grid-tied and isolated operation. The HESS includes the battery, fuel cell, and ultra-capacitor to accomplish the peak shaving, managing the disturbances of sudden and prolonged nature occurring due to load unbalancing and abnormal grid voltag... Keywords: finite element analysis, harmonics, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar power generation transformer
This article presents a comparative analysis for the design considerations for a solar power generation transformer. One of the main existing problems in transformer manufacturing is in the renewable energy field, specifically the solar power generation, where the transformer connected to the inverter is operated under a certain harmonic content and operating conditions. The operating conditions of the transformer connected to the inverter are particularly unknown for each solar power plant; thus, the transformer will be subject to a particular harmonic content, which is defined by the inverter of the solar power plant. First, the fundamental calculations for solar power plant transformer and the proposed methodology for the design calculation of the distribution pad-mounted three phase transformer are presented. Then, a design study case is described where a distribution transformer and an inverter of a particular solar power plant are used for the analysis. Next, the transformer unde... [more]
Learning to Calibrate Battery Models in Real-Time with Deep Reinforcement Learning

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: intelligent maintenance, lithium-ion batteries, model calibration, reinforcement learning
Lithium-ion (Li-I) batteries have recently become pervasive and are used in many physical assets. For the effective management of the batteries, reliable predictions of the end-of-discharge (EOD) and end-of-life (EOL) are essential. Many detailed electrochemical models have been developed for the batteries. Their parameters are calibrated before they are taken into operation and are typically not re-calibrated during operation. However, the degradation of batteries increases the reality gap between the computational models and the physical systems and leads to inaccurate predictions of EOD/EOL. The current calibration approaches are either computationally expensive (model-based calibration) or require large amounts of ground truth data for degradation parameters (supervised data-driven calibration). This is often infeasible for many practical applications. In this paper, we introduce a reinforcement learning-based framework for reliably inferring calibration parameters of battery model... [more]

Keywords: adaptive control, control of renewable energy resources, extremum seeking control
Maximum-power point tracking of wind turbines is a challenging issue considering fast changing wind conditions of urban areas. For this purpose, an adaptive control approach that is fast and robust is required. Conventional approaches based on simple step perturbations and subsequent observation, however, are difficult to design and too slow for the demanding wind conditions of urban areas including gusts and turbulence. In this paper, an extremum seeking control scheme to the recently developed wind turbine MOWEA (Modulare Windenergieanlagen GmbH) is proposed and successfully applied. To this end, a comprehensive aero-electromechanical model of the wind turbine under study including basic control is formulated. Next, the extremum seeking control scheme is adapted to the system. Several aspects to increase adaptation speed are highlighted, including a novel phase compensation. Finally, a validation of the proposed approach is performed considering real wind data, thus demonstrating its... [more]

Keywords: heat pump, humidification, liquid desiccant, steam humidifier
The objective of this study was to modify an existing liquid desiccant and indirect/direct evaporative cooling-assisted 100% outdoor air system (LD-IDECOAS) for humidification operation in winter. The energy benefit of the liquid desiccant-assisted humidification approach during the operation of LD-IDECOAS over the conventional method with a steam humidifier was evaluated through a detailed energy simulation. The humidification and enthalpy effectiveness values of the liquid desiccant humidification measured from laboratory tests were 0.41 and 0.49, respectively, which were applied to the energy simulation for the modified system. Both systems with the proposed and conventional humidification approaches were simulated using an engineering equation solver combined with a TRNSYS 18 energy simulation program. The results demonstrated that the modified LD-IDECOAS consumes less energy for humidification compared to the existing system with a steam humidifier. The proposed system also exhibi... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ±230 kV MMC-HVDC, bidirectional DCCB, DC circuit breaker, DC transmission line, energy dissipation, external elements, fault current, hybrid DCCB, zero-crossing DCCB
With the increasing demand for renewable energy power generation systems, high-power DC transmission technology is drawing considerable attention. As a result, stability issues associated with high power DC transmission have been highlighted. One of these problems is the fault current that appears when a fault occurs in the transmission line. If the fault current flows in the transmission line, it has a serious adverse effect on the rectifier stage, inverter stage and transmission line load. This makes the transmission technology less reliable and can lead to secondary problems such as fire. Therefore, fault current must be managed safely. DC circuit breaker technology has been proposed to solve this problem. However, conventional technologies generally do not take into account the effects of fault current on the transmission line, and their efficiency is relatively low. The purpose of this study is to introduce an improved DC circuit breaker that uses a blocking inductor to minimize t... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: lithium batteries, los minimization, Modular Multilevel Converters, optimization methods
In the developing context of distributed generation and flexible smart grids, in order to realize electrochemical storage systems, Modular Multilevel Converters (MMCs) represent an interesting alternative to the more traditional Voltage Source Inverters (VSIs). This paper presents a novel analytical investigation of electrochemical cell power losses in MMCs and their dependence on the injected common mode voltage. Steady-state cell losses are calculated under Nearest Level Control (NLC) modulation for MMCs equipped with a large number of half-bridge modules, each directly connected to an elementary electrochemical cell. The total cell losses of both a Single Star MMC (SS-MMC) and a Double Star MMC (DS MMC) are derived and compared to the loss of a VSI working under the same conditions. An optimum common mode voltage injection law is developed, leading to the minimum cell losses possible. In the worst case, it achieves a 17.5% reduction in cell losses compared to conventional injection... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: alkoxides, carbon nanofibers, composites, electrospinning, Li-ion batteries, metal oxides
Carbon nanofibers decorated with various metal oxide nanoparticles were fabricated by combining an electrospinning technique of bicomponent polymer mixture and a sol-gel reaction and subsequent carbonization process. Electrospun polymer nanofibers consisting of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) with controllable diameters were fabricated with PAN/PVP core/shell types via phase-separation due to the immiscibility between two polymers. The electrospun nanofibers served as supporting materials with binding sites of PVP to incorporate titanium oxide precursor. Subsequently, the carbonization of the fibers led to the formation of carbon nanofibers@TiO2 for energy application, in which rutile TiO2 nanoparticles were decorated on the surface of carbon nanofiber. Especially, this TiO2 decorated carbon nanofiber electrode exhibited excellent electrochemical property in lithium-ion batteries (≈600 mA h g−1 at C/5 rate for 100 cycles). Furthermore, the carbon nanofibers we... [more]

Keywords: integrated approach, local innovation process, sector coupling, transdisciplinary collaboration
Local implementation projects for sector coupling play an important role in the transformation to a more sustainable energy system. Despite various technical possibilities, there are various barriers to the realisation of local projects. Against this backdrop, we introduce an inter- and transdisciplinary approach to identifying and evaluating different power-to-X paths as well as setting up robust local implementation projects, which account for existing drivers and potential hurdles early on. After developing the approach conceptually, we exemplify our elaborations by applying them to a use case in the German city of Wuppertal. It can be shown that a mix of several interlinked interdisciplinary methods as well as several participatory elements is suitable for triggering a collective, local innovation process. However, the timing and extent of end-user integration remain a balancing act. The paper does not focus on a detailed description of power-to-X (PtX) as a central pillar of the s... [more]

Keywords: cylindrical cell, lithium-ion battery, temperature distribution, temperature rising rate, thermal dummy cell, thermal management system
This paper aims to design thermal dummy cells (TDCs) that can be used in the development of lithium-ion battery thermal management systems. Based on physical property and geometry of real 18,650 cylindrical cells, a three-dimensional model of TDCs was designed, and it is used to numerically simulate the thermal performance of TDCs. Simulations show that the TDC can mimic the temperature change on the surface of a real cell both at static and dynamic current load. Experimental results show that the rate of heating resistance of TDC is less than 0.43% for temperatures between 27.5 °C and 90.5 °C. Powered by a two-step voltage source of 12 V, the temperature difference of TDCs is 1 °C and 1.6 °C along the circumference and the axial directions, respectively. Powered by a constant voltage source of 6 V, the temperature rising rates on the surface and in the core are higher than 1.9 °C/min. Afterwards, the proposed TDC was used to simulate a real cell for investigating its thermal performan... [more]

Keywords: automated pattern recognition, convolution neural network, deep Learning, insulation systems, partial discharges, phase resolved partial discharge
Classification of the sources of partial discharges has been a standard procedure to assess the status of insulation in high voltage systems. One of the challenges while classifying these sources is the decision on the distinct properties of each one, often requiring the skills of trained human experts. Machine learning offers a solution to this problem by allowing to train models based on extracted features. The performance of such algorithms heavily depends on the choice of features. This can be overcome by using deep learning where feature extraction is done automatically by the algorithm, and the input to such an algorithm is the raw input data. In this work, an enhanced convolutional neural network is proposed that is capable of classifying single sources as well as multiple sources of partial discharges without introducing multiple sources in the training phase. The training is done by using only single-source phase-resolved partial discharge (PRPD) patterns, while testing is per... [more]

Keywords: actuation circuit, CFD-1D, Gerotor pump, hydraulic resonance, order tracking, pressure oscillation
The paper investigates hydraulic wave propagation phenomena through hydraulic circuits of power transmission systems by means of numerical approaches. The actuation circuit of a Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT) power transmission system supplied by a Gerotor pump is analyzed. A steady state approach is adopted to detect resonance phenomena due to Gerotor design parameters and circuit lengths, while one-dimensional numerical models are implemented to predict the pressure oscillations through the hydraulic ducts for the whole pump operating domain. CFD-1D pipelines are adopted to address the pressure oscillation behavior through the hydraulic pipeline, while spectral maps and order tracking techniques are used to evaluate their fluctuation intensity in function of the pump speed rate. The numerical models are validated with experimental tests performed on an ad hoc test rig for power transmission systems and a good match is found between the numerical and the experimental results. Keywords: ammonia injection, ammonia injection, denitrification, flow control, molar ratio, numerical analysis
The selective catalytic reduction method is a useful method for the denitrification process of exhaust gas emitted from industrial facilities. The distribution of the ammonia−nitrogen oxide mixing ratio at the inlet of the catalyst layers is important in the denitrification process. In this study, a computational analysis technique was used to improve the uniformity of the NH3/NO molar ratio by controlling the flow rate of the ammonia injection nozzle according to the flow distribution of nitrogen oxides in the inlet exhaust gas of the denitrification facility. The application model was simplified to the two-dimensional array adopted from the existing selective catalytic reduction (SCR) process in the large-scaled coal-fired power plant. As the inlet conditions, four (4) types of flow pattern were simulated, i.e., parabolic, upper-skewed, lower-skewed, and random. The flow rate of the eight (8) nozzles installed in the ammonia injection grid was controlled by Design Xplorer as the opti... [more]

Keywords: CAE, heat conduction, Julia, meshless, RBF-FD
One of the goals of new CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) software is to reduce both time and costs of the design process without compromising accuracy. This result can be achieved, for instance, by promoting a “plug and play” philosophy, based on the adoption of automatic mesh generation algorithms. This in turn brings about some drawbacks, among others an unavoidable loss of accuracy due to the lack of specificity of the produced discretization. Alternatively it is possible to rely on the so called “meshless” methods, which skip the mesh generation process altogether. The purpose of this paper is to present a fully meshless approach, based on Radial Basis Function generated Finite Differences (RBF-FD), for the numerical solution of generic elliptic PDEs, with particular reference to time-dependent and steady 3D heat conduction problems. The absence of connectivity information, which is a peculiar feature of this meshless approach, is leveraged in order to develop an efficient procedur... [more]
