MTI-YOLO: A Light-Weight and Real-Time Deep Neural Network for Insulator Detection in Complex Aerial Images
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: aerial image, complex background, convolution neural networks, image processing, insulator detection, YOLO network
Insulator detection is an essential task for the safety and reliable operation of intelligent grids. Owing to insulator images including various background interferences, most traditional image-processing methods cannot achieve good performance. Some You Only Look Once (YOLO) networks are employed to meet the requirements of actual applications for insulator detection. To achieve a good trade-off among accuracy, running time, and memory storage, this work proposes the modified YOLO-tiny for insulator (MTI-YOLO) network for insulator detection in complex aerial images. First of all, composite insulator images are collected in common scenes and the “CCIN_detection” (Chinese Composite INsulator) dataset is constructed. Secondly, to improve the detection accuracy of different sizes of insulator, multi-scale feature detection headers, a structure of multi-scale feature fusion, and the spatial pyramid pooling (SPP) model are adopted to the MTI-YOLO network. Finally, the proposed MTI-YOLO net... [more]

Open Source Modelling and Simulation of the Nordic Hydro Power System
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: energy system model, hydro power, nordic system, open-source model
In this paper, we present the results from the development and the simulation of a hydro power model for Sweden and Norway, using SpineOpt software and openly available data. We employ (i) hydrological and market data from the Nordic region and (ii) the abstract representation of the multi-vector modelling and simulation engine SpineOpt, to compile an open-source model of a large portion of the hydro power plants of the Nordic region, for conducting realistic hydro power generation studies. We place the hydro power system operation within the structuring of the Nordic electricity market and study the effect that different objectives have on the operational results. By employing the SpineOpt functionalities for automating the transformation of the temporal resolution of the model, we explore the trade-of between its computational burden and accuracy.

Hybrid Output Voltage Modulation (PWM-FSHE) for a Modular Battery System Based on a Cascaded H-Bridge Inverter for Electric Vehicles Reducing Drivetrain Losses and Current Ripple
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: Batteries, battery management systems, Energy Efficiency, modular multilevel systems, pulse width modulation, torque, total harmonic distortion
This paper shows a preliminary study about the output voltage modulation of a modular battery system based on a seven-level cascaded H-bridge inverter used for vehicle propulsion. Two generally known modulation techniques, pulse width modulation (PWM) and fundamental selective harmonic elimination (FSHE), are extensively compared for such an innovative modular battery system inverter considering EVs’ broad torque-speed range. The inverter and the battery losses, as well as the inverter-induced current THD, are modeled and quantified using simulations. At low speeds, if the modulation index M is below 0.3, FSHE induces a high current THD (>>5%) and, thus, cannot be used. At medium speeds, FSHE reduces the drivetrain losses (including the battery losses), while operating at higher speeds, it even reduces the current THD. Thus, an individual boundary between multilevel PWM and FSHE can be determined using weightings for efficiency and current quality. Based on this, a simple hybrid modula... [more]

A Switched Reluctance Motor Drive Controller Based on an FPGA Device with a Complex PID Regulator
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: controller, FPGA, PID regulator, regulator, switched reluctance motor
This paper presents a proposal for a new type of regulator for switched reluctance motor (SRM) drives. The proposed regulator enables a significant extension of the rotational speed range and drive output power. This regulator is characterized by a complex structure, including two regulation modules: voltage and phase supply switch-on angle. The voltage module includes a proportional integral derivative (PID) voltage regulator. During its operation, the value of the phase supply switch-on angle and the width of the phase supply range are determined as a result of interpolation of the data previously determined in the simulation program. The other module contains the PID controller of the phase supply switch-on angle. The values of the angles included in the tables have been determined so as to ensure that the drive works with the greatest possible efficiency. The control method is determined based on the current operating parameters of the drive, i.e., torque and speed. The operation o... [more]

Impact Identification of Carbon-Containing Carboniferous Clays on Surfaces of Friction Nodes
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: clayey minerals, claystone, friction, hard coal, wear processes
The article deals with issues related to the processes occurring in the wear result of steel surfaces of machine components in the presence of mineral grains. This type of destruction of cooperating surfaces usually takes place during the development of roadways or during mining of coal with use of longwall methods. Wear tests were carried out using the author’s ring-on-ring test stand, on which the conditions of real wear of machine components in the presence of rocks were simulated. An abrasive material based on clayey rocks with an admixture of carbonaceous substance was used in the tests. Based on the analyses, it was found that the obtained results related to the damages are typical for wear mechanisms: microcracking and low-cycle fatigue. On the surface of the steel samples, numerous effects of micro-cutting and chipping could be observed, which were the result of the clayey impact of wear products and grains of the mineral substance. Under friction, a part of the abrasive and th... [more]

A Multi-Objective Life Cycle Optimization Model of an Integrated Algal Biorefinery toward a Sustainable Circular Bioeconomy Considering Resource Recirculation
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: algal biofuel, algal biorefinery, life cycle optimization, mixed integer nonlinear programming
Biofuel production from microalgae biomass has been considered a viable alternative to harmful fossil fuels; however, challenges are faced regarding its economic sustainability. Process integration to yield various high-value bioproducts is implemented to raise profitability and sustainability. By incorporating a circular economy outlook, recirculation of resource flows is maximized to yield economic and environmental benefits through waste minimization. However, previous modeling studies have not looked into the opportunity of integrating productivity reduction related to the continuous recirculation and reuse of resources until it reaches its end of life. In this work, a novel multi-objective optimization model is developed centered on an algal biorefinery that simultaneously optimizes cost and environmental impact, adopts the principle of resource recovery and recirculation, and incorporates the life cycle assessment methodology to properly account for the environmental impacts of t... April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: ANSYS coupled analysis, design methods, FEM, fuse links, low voltage fuses, modeling and simulation, transient thermal analysis
In this paper, a detailed three-dimensional, transient, finite element method of fuse link NH000 gG 100 A is proposed. The thermal properties during the operation of the fuses under nominal (100 A) and custom conditions (110 and 120 A) are the main focus of the analyses that were conducted. The work concerns both the outside elements of the fuse link (ceramic body) and the elements inside (current circuit). Both the distribution of the electric current and its impact on the temperature of the construction parts of the fuses during their operating mode have been described. Temperature distribution, power losses and energy dissipation were measured using a numerical model. In order to verify and validate the model, two independent teams of scientists executed experimental research, during which the temperature was measured on different parts of the device involving the rated current. Finally, the two sets of results were put together and compared with those obtained from the simulation t... [more]

A Low-Voltage DC Backbone with Aggregated RES and BESS: Benefits Compared to a Traditional Low-Voltage AC System
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: efficiency, load aggregation, LVDC, photovoltaic, power converters, self-sufficiency index
The increasing penetration of PV into the distribution grid leads to congestion, causing detrimental power quality issues. Moreover, the multiple small photovoltaic (PV) systems and battery energy storage systems (BESSs) result in increasing conversion losses. A low-voltage DC (LVDC) backbone to interconnect these assets would decrease the conversion losses and is a promising solution for a more optimal integration of PV systems. The multiple small PV systems can be replaced by shared assets with large common PV installations and a large BESS. Sharing renewable energy and aggregation are activities that are stimulated by the European Commission and lead to a substantial benefit in terms of self-consumption index (SCI) and self-sufficiency index (SSI). In this study, the benefit of an LVDC backbone is investigated compared to using a low-voltage AC (LVAC) system. It is found that the cable losses increase by 0.9 percent points and the conversion losses decrease by 12 percent points comp... [more]

Preferential Protection of Low Coordinated Sites in Pt Nanoparticles for Enhancing Durability of Pt/C Catalyst
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: durability, low coordinated site, polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell, preferential protection, Pt dissolution
Protecting low coordinated sites (LCS) of Pt nanoparticles, which are vulnerable to dissolution, may be an ideal solution for enhancing the durability of polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEMFCs). However, the selective protection of LCSs without deactivating the other sites presents a key challenge. Herein, we report the preferential protection of LCSs with a thiol derivative having a silane functional group, (3-mercaptopropyl) triethoxysilane (MPTES). MPTES preferentially adsorbs on the LCSs and is converted to a silica framework, providing robust masking of the LCSs. With the preferential protection, the initial oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity is marginally reduced by 8% in spite of the initial electrochemical surface area (ECSA) loss of 30%. The protected Pt/C catalyst shows an ECSA loss of 5.6% and an ORR half-wave potential loss of 5 mV after 30,000 voltage cycles between 0.6 and 1.0 V, corresponding to a 6.7- and 2.6-fold durability improvement compared to unprotected Pt/... Maximizing Transfer Efficiency with an Adaptive Wireless Power Transfer System for Variable Load Applications
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: magnetic resonant couple, Optimization, reconfigurable wireless power transfer, variable load, wireless power transfer
Electronic devices usually operate in a variable loading condition and the power transfer efficiency of the accompanying wireless power transfer (WPT) method should be optimizable to a variable load. In this paper, a reconfigurable WPT technique is introduced to maximize power transfer efficiency in a weakly coupled, variable load wireless power transfer application. A series-series two-coil wireless power network with resonators at a frequency of 150 kHz is presented and, under a variable loading condition, a shunt capacitor element is added to compensate for a maximum efficiency state. The series capacitance element of the secondary resonator is tuned to form a resonance at 150 kHz for maximum power transfer. All the capacitive elements for the secondary resonators are equipped with reconfigurability. Regardless of the load resistance, this proposed approach is able to achieve maximum efficiency with constant power delivery and the power present at the load is only dependent on the i... [more]

Complex Valuation of Energy from Agricultural Crops including Local Conditions
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
This paper provides values of economic, energy and environmental assessments of 20 crops and assesses the relationships of soil-climatic conditions in the example of the Czech Republic. The comparison of main soil quality indicators according to the configuration of land and climate regions is performed on the basis of energy and economic efficiency as well as a comparison of the level of environmental impacts. The environmental impacts are identified based on the assessment of emissions from production and also in the form of soil compaction as an indicator of the relationship to soil quality. As concerns soil properties, of major importance is soil skeleton, slope of land and the depth of soil, which cause an increase in emissions from the energy produced. Substantially better emission parameters per 1 MJ through energy crops, the cultivation of perennial crops and silage maize has been supported. Among energy crops, a positive relationship with the quality of soil is seen in alfalfa... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: cogging torque, electric vehicle, interior permanent magnet synchronous motors, magnetic flux density saturation, torque ripple, total harmonic distortion
Owing to the development of electric vehicles (EVs), research and development are underway to minimize torque ripple in relation to vibration and noise in EV motors. Although there are various ways to reduce torque ripple, this study analyzes the torque ripple, cogging torque, total harmonic distortion (THD), and magnetic flux density distribution for the three rotor shapes of interior permanent magnet synchronous motors, which are widely employed in EVs. To reduce the torque ripple while retaining the required average torque, the barrier shape is optimized, and wedge skew is applied. First, regarding the rotor barrier shape, torque ripple is primarily reduced by designing the rotor barrier shape with the response surface method, which is an experimental design method. Additionally, the wedge skew shape considering the bidirectional rotation and fabrication was applied to the stator shoe as a step and analyzed using three-dimensional finite element analysis. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: biomass productivity, Chlorella sorokiniana, FAME (fatty acid methyl esters), hydrolysate, lipid, nutrient amended media
Hydrolysate prepared from the chemical hydrolysis of water hyacinth biomass contains a high amount of solubilised carbohydrate and nutrients. This hydrolysate was utilised as a medium for the cultivation of two strains of Chlorella sorokiniana, isolated from a municipal wastewater treatment plant using two different media, i.e., BG-11 and Knop’s medium. Different light intensities, light−dark cycles, and various concentrations of external carbon sources (monosaccharides and inorganic carbon) were used to optimise the microalgal growth. For the accumulation of lipids and carbohydrates, the microalgal strains were transferred to nutrient amended medium (N-amended and P-amended). It was observed that the combined effect of glucose, inorganic carbon, and a 12:12 h light−dark cycle proved to be the optimum parameters for high biomass productivity (~200 mg/L/day). For Chlorella sorokiniana 1 (isolated from BG-11 medium), the maximum carbohydrate content (22%) was found in P-amended medium (N... [more]

Opportunities for the State-of-the-Art Production of LIB Electrodes—A Review
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery electrode, drying techniques, lithium-ion battery, solvent chemistry
A sustainable shift from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs) is essential to achieve a considerable reduction in emissions. The production of Li-ion batteries (LIBs) used in EVs is an energy-intensive and costly process. It can also lead to significant embedded emissions depending on the source of energy used. In fact, about 39% of the energy consumption in LIB production is associated with drying processes, where the electrode drying step accounts for about a half. Despite the enormous energy consumption and costs originating from drying processes, they are seldomly researched in the battery industry. Establishing knowledge within the LIB industry regarding state-of-the-art drying techniques and solvent evaporation mechanisms is vital for optimising process conditions, detecting alternative solvent systems, and discovering novel techniques. This review aims to give a summary of the state-of-the-art LIB processing techniques. An in-depth understanding o... [more]

Simplified Transition and Turbulence Modeling for Oscillatory Pipe Flows
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: pipe flow, pulse-tube cryogenic coolers, turbulence modeling, unsteady turbulent flow, Womersley number
One-dimensional unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier−Stokes computations were performed for oscillatory transitional and turbulent pipe flows and the results were validated against existing experimental data for a wide variety of oscillatory Reynolds and Womersley numbers. An unsteady version of the Johnson−King model was implemented with optional near-wall modification to account for temporal pressure gradient variations, and the predictions were compared with those of the Spalart−Allmaras and k−ε turbulence models. Transition and relaminarization were based on empirical Womersley number correlations and assumed to occur instantaneously: in the former case, this assumption was valid, but in the latter case, deviations between data and predictions were observed. In flows where the oscillatory Reynolds numbers are substantially higher than the commonly accepted steady critical value (~2000), fully or continuously turbulent models produced the best correspondence with experimental data. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: afterimage, illumination engineering, mesopic vision, regression analysis, viewing glare
Three psycho-visual experiments were carried out to investigate visual afterimage characteristics of high luminance LEDs under dark surround conditions. The results show that the luminance of illumination, exposure time and background luminance are the primary factors influencing the afterimage’s duration, the color difference between stimulus and background, and visibility. Besides, visual afterimage characteristics are strongly correlated with the luminance contrast between the stimulus and the background, but not for the color difference with a white background. A third-order polynomial regression model was proposed to accurately estimate the afterimage duration, the color difference between stimulus and background, and visibility. The model performance showed high R-squared, low root-mean-square error (RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE) values between the predicted and visual characteristics.

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: non-equilibrium phase behavior, pore-scale simulation, solvent-based recovery processes, VAPEX
A need for a reduction in energy intensity and greenhouse gas emissions of bitumen and heavy oil recovery processes has led to the invention of several methods where mass-transfer-based recovery processes in terms of cold or heated solvent injection are used to reduce bitumen viscosity rather than steam injection. Keywords: form-stable phase change materials, MWCNTs, PEG, thermal conductivity
Calcium ions can react with polyethylene glycol (PEG) to form a form-stable phase change material, but the low thermal conductivity hinders its practical application. In this paper, hydroxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with different mass are introduced into PEG1500·CaCl2 form-stable phase change material to prepare a new type of energy storage material. Carbon nanotubes increased the mean free path (MFP) of phonons and effectively reduced the interfacial thermal resistance between pure PEG and PEG1500·CaCl2 3D skeleton structure. Thermal conductivity was significant improved after increasing MWCNTs mass, while the latent heat decreases. At 1.5 wt%, composite material shows the highest phase change temperature of 42 °C, and its thermal conductivity is 291.30% higher than pure PEG1500·CaCl2. This article can provide some suggestions for the preparation and application of high thermal conductivity form-stable phase change materials.
