An Optimized and Decentralized Energy Provision System for Smart Cities
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: advanced metering infrastructure, bio-inspired algorithms, blockchain, Ethereum, Genetic Algorithm, microgrid, Particle Swarm Optimization, wireless sensor network
Energy efficiency and data security of smart grids are one of the major concerns in the context of implementing modern approaches in smart cities. For the intelligent management of energy systems, wireless sensor networks and advanced metering infrastructures have played an essential role in the transformation of traditional cities into smart communities. In this paper, a smart city energy model is proposed in which prosumer communities were built by interconnecting energy self-sufficient households to generate, consume and share clean energy on a decentralized trading platform by integrating blockchain technology with a smart microgrid. The efficiency and stability of the grid network were improved by using several wireless sensor nodes that manage a massive amount of data in the network. However, long communication distances between sensor nodes and the base station can greatly consume the energy of sensors and decrease the network lifespan. Therefore, bio-inspired algorithm approach... [more]

Input Parallel Output Series Structure of Planar Medium Frequency Transformers for 200 kW Power Converter: Model and Parameters Evaluation
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: IPOS, model, power transformers, Solid State Transformer
Nowadays, the demand for high power converters for DC applications, such as renewable sources or ultra-fast chargers for electric vehicles, is constantly growing. Galvanic isolation is mandatory in most of these applications. In this context, the Solid State Transformer (SST) converter plays a fundamental role. The adoption of the Medium Frequency Transformers (MFT) guarantees galvanic isolation in addition to high performance in reduced size. In the present paper, a multi MFT structure is proposed as a solution to improve the power density and the modularity of the system. Starting from 20kW planar transformer model, experimentally validated, a multi-transformer structure is analyzed. After an analytical treatment of the Input Parallel Output Series (IPOS) structure, an equivalent electrical model of a 200kW IPOS (made by 10 MFTs) is introduced. The model is validated by experimental measurements and tests.

Study on Optimum Power Take-Off Torque of an Asymmetric Wave Energy Converter in Western Sea of Jeju Island
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: asymmetric WEC, load torque, OpenFOAM, optimum PTO, RANS
This study primarily investigates an optimum energy conversion efficiency of asymmetric wave energy converter (WEC). A power take-off (PTO) system that provides a constant load torque opposite to pitch motion was implemented. Incident wave conditions were selected based on the measured data in the western sea of Jeju Island, South Korea. An optimum torque was calculated by comparing the time-averaged extracted power with various PTO load torque. InterDyMFoam solver based on Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations were used in an OpenFOAM v4.0 framework—an open-source computational fluid dynamics model—against the experimental results derived from the wave flume. The upward pitch excursion was induced by wave force due to the asymmetric WEC characteristics; however, the downward pitch excursion depends on its weight. Numerically, the PTO torque was only loaded in uni-direction against the upward pitch motion. Moreover, the optimum PTO torque was estimated by comparing the time-... [more]

Predicting Capacity Fade in Silicon Anode-Based Li-Ion Batteries
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: loads, NCA, NMC, particle size, volume fraction
While silicon anodes hold promise for use in lithium-ion batteries owing to their very high theoretical storage capacity and relatively low discharge potential, they possess a major problem related to their large volume expansion that occurs with battery aging. The resulting stress and strain can lead to mechanical separation of the anode from the current collector and an unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), resulting in capacity fade. Since capacity loss is in part dependent on the cell materials, two different electrodes, Lithium Nickel Oxide or LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 (NCA) and LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 (NMC 111), were used in combination with silicon to study capacity fade effects using simulations in COMSOL version 5.5. The results of these studies provide insight into the effects of anode particle size and electrolyte volume fraction on the behavior of silicon anode-based batteries with different positive electrodes. It was observed that the performance of a porous matrix of soli... [more]

A CFD-Based Optimization of Building Configuration for Urban Ventilation Potential
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: building configuration, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), genetic algorithm (GA), urban ventilation
In this paper, we present a performance-based approach to building configuration design to improve the urban ventilation potential at the conceptual design stage, and we demonstrate its application through a case study. The target performance optimized was the ventilation potential of a district, including a region of interest at a spatial scale of hundreds of meters. To estimate this performance, we used computational fluid dynamics (CFD), coupled with an evolutionary algorithm, to optimize the design alternatives to produce the building configuration most suitable for a given set of site conditions. Three calculation components must be assembled for a CFD-based design optimization: an optimizer, a geometry/mesh generator, and a CFD solver. To provide links between the calculation components, we utilized an in-house parametric design program. A case study was conducted to test the applicability of the proposed design method to identify the optimal solutions that minimize adverse effec... [more]

Improving Wind Power Forecasts: Combination through Multivariate Dimension Reduction Techniques
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: combination of forecasts, dimension reduction, Markov chain model, partial least squares, principal components, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, wind power forecasting
Wind energy and wind power forecast errors have a direct impact on operational decision problems involved in the integration of this form of energy into the electricity system. As the relationship between wind and the generated power is highly nonlinear and time-varying, and given the increasing number of available forecasting techniques, it is possible to use alternative models to obtain more than one prediction for the same hour and forecast horizon. To increase forecast accuracy, it is possible to combine the different predictions to obtain a better one or to dynamically select the best one in each time period. Hybrid alternatives based on combining a few selected forecasts can be considered when the number of models is large. One of the most popular ways to combine forecasts is to estimate the coefficients of each prediction model based on its past forecast errors. As an alternative, we propose using multivariate reduction techniques and Markov chain models to combine forecasts. Th... [more]

Towards an Energy Self-Sufficient Resource Recovery Facility by Improving Energy and Economic Balance of a Municipal WWTP with Chemically Enhanced Primary Treatment
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, chemically enhanced primary treatment, economic analysis, energy balance, sludge, WWTP
The recent trend of turning wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) into energy self-sufficient resource recovery facilities has led to a constant search for solutions that fit into that concept. One of them is chemically enhanced primary treatment (CEPT), which provides an opportunity to increase biogas production and to significantly reduce the amount of sludge for final disposal. Laboratory, pilot, and full-scale trials were conducted for the coagulation and sedimentation of primary sludge (PS) with iron sulphate (PIX). Energy and economic balance calculations were conducted based on the obtained results. Experimental trials indicated that CEPT contributed to an increase in biogas production by 21% and to a decrease in sludge volume for final disposal by 12% weight. Furthermore, the application of CEPT may lead to a decreased energy demand for aeration by 8%. The removal of nitrogen in an autotrophic manner in the side stream leads to a further reduction in energy consumption in WWTP (u... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biodiesel, e-beam irradiation, FAME, flow system, physicochemical properties, sterilization
The problem of microbial growth in fuels, especially biofuels, is a very important issue. Water is a necessity for microbial growth to occur. Unfortunately, it is very hard to exclude all water from fuel systems during daily operations, especially when biodiesel is added to the fuel mix. The aim of this work was to investigate the impact of ionizing radiation on selected properties of fatty acids methyl esters in order to evaluate the possibility of using irradiation techniques to sterilize biodiesel and its blends. Ionizing radiation influences the chemical composition of biodiesel samples containing especially unsaturated bonds. Irradiation was performed in a specially designed flow system. The tested parameters were compared with the normative values from the ISO 14214 standard. Density, kinematic viscosity, flash point, water content and cold filter plugging point as a macroscopic parameters do not change despite their irradiation with ionizing radiation. Change was observed in mic... [more]

Analysis of Aeroacoustic Properties of the Local Radial Point Interpolation Cumulant Lattice Boltzmann Method
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aeroacoustics, dispersion, dissipation, local radial point interpolation cumulant LBM, wind turbine
The lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) has recently been used to simulate wave propagation, one of the challenging aspects of wind turbine modeling and simulation. However, standard LB methods suffer from the instability that occurs at low viscosities and from its characteristic lattice uniformity, which results in issues of accuracy and computational efficiency following mesh refinement. The local radial point interpolation cumulant lattice Boltzmann method (LRPIC-LBM) is proposed in this paper to overcome these shortcomings. The LB equation is divided into collision and streaming steps. The collision step is modeled by the cumulant method, one of the stable LB methods at low viscosities. In addition, the streaming step, which is naturally a pure advection equation, is discretized in time and space using the Lax−Wendroff scheme and the local radial point interpolation method (RPIM), a mesh free method. We describe the propagation of planar acoustic waves, including the temporal decay of a... [more]

Designing Tools for Energy System Scenario Making in Municipal Energy Planning
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: energy planning, energy scenario making, energy system modelling, tool design
Energy planning increasingly revolves around the use of tools for energy system modelling and analysis with a view to generating scenarios to show implications and possibilities for decision makers. Municipalities engage in the transition to renewable energy systems through the formulation of strategies and goals at a local level despite often lacking appropriate tools and resources to conduct the needed complex analyses. Tools for energy system analyses have traditionally been designed either with the scope of national energy systems or detailed project-specific analysis in mind, leaving municipal planners in a state of flux. This study aims to identify important specifications and critical design principles for future energy system modelling tools designed for municipal planners. Through a qualitative case-oriented approach, this study investigates the planning practices of four municipalities. It is found that future tools for municipal planning purposes need to combine the need for... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: battery energy storage systems, hydro-thermal-wind-photovoltaic power system, linear programming, Locational Marginal Pricing, wind power curtailment
The Daily Operation Scheduling (DOS) gets new challenges while a large-scale of renewable energy is inserted into the power system. In addition to the operation, the power variability of these sources also causes a problem in the hourly pricing, represented here by Locational Marginal Pricing (LMP). Therefore, new applications, such as energy shifting, offer greater efficiency to the system, minimizing the negative effects caused by wind power curtailment (WPC). This paper shows the LMP formation in the DOS of the hydro-thermal-wind-photovoltaic power system with a battery energy storage system and the reduction of WPC. Here, the wind and photovoltaic power plants are designed to be dispatched, not mandatory, to be able to cut the generation, and the insertion of Distributed Generation is considered. Moreover, to solve the DOS problem, the interior-point method is used. Additionally, the DC optimal power flow, used to represent the DOS in addition to the representation of the electric... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: automotive materials, biodiesel, corrosion, corrosion test methods, green fuels
The world’s need for energy is increasing with the passage of time and the substantial energy demand of the world is met by fossil fuels. Biodiesel has been considered as a replacement for fossil fuels in automotive engines. Biodiesels are advantageous because they provide energy security, they are nontoxic, renewable, economical, and biodegradable and clean sources of energy. However, there are certain disadvantages of biodiesels, including their corrosive, hygroscopic and oxidative natures. This paper provides a review of automotive materials when coming into contact with biodiesel blended fuel in terms of corrosion. Biodiesels have generally been proved to be corrosive, therefore it is important to understand the limits and extents of corrosion on different materials. Methods generally used to find and calculate corrosion have also been discussed in this paper. The reasons for the occurrence of corrosion and the subsequent problems because of corrosion have been presented. Biodiesel... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: battery energy storage system, co-located system, coordination strategy, frequency response, particle swarm optimisation
The rapid development and growth of battery storage have heightened an interest in the co-location of battery energy storage systems (BESS) with renewable energy projects which enables the stacking of multiple revenue streams while reducing connection charges of BESS. To help wind energy industries better understand the coordinated operation of BESS and wind farms and its associated profits, this paper develops a simulation model to implement a number of coordination strategies where the BESS supplies enhanced frequency response (EFR) service and enables the time shift of wind generation based on the UK perspective. The proposed model also simulates the degradation of Lithium-Ion battery and incorporates a state of charge (SOC) dependent limit on the charge rate derived from a constant current-constant voltage charging profile. In addition, a particle swarm optimisation-based battery sizing algorithm is developed here on the basis of the simulation model to determine the optimal size o... [more]

How Much Polish Consumers Know about Alternative Fuel Vehicles? Impact of Knowledge on the Willingness to Buy
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: consumers, e-mobility, electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, knowledge, plug-in electric vehicles, sustainable transport, telephone survey, willingness to buy
Limited consumer knowledge reduces the chances of the spread of alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs), and hence slows down AFV market spread. In our empirical survey conducted in the first quarter of 2020 among 1002 Poles planning to buy a car in the next 12 months or who have just bought one, we examine what socio-economic and attitudinal factors influence their willingness to buy an AFV. In particular, we are interested in exploring how AFV knowledge related to understanding of the differences between hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs), as well as brand recognition associate with the willingness to buy. To the best our knowledge, this is a unique study among consumers in Central and Eastern Europe, characterized by lower exposure to AFVs and lower purchasing power. Our results indicate that males with pro-environmental beliefs and behaviors who are interested in modern automotive technologies and have good AFV br... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active and reactive power management, ancillary services, frequency control of power grid, grid-to-vehicle (G2V), plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs), power grid voltage regulation, power management, transportation electrification, vehicle-to-grid (V2G)
In this study, a double-loop control strategy is proposed for power grid frequency and voltage regulation using plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) connected to the grid through a three-level capacitor clamped inverter. The frequency and voltage regulation problem is first formulated using vector space analysis and phasor diagrams to find the boundaries and constraints in terms of the system parameters. The derived formulas are then utilized to design a double-loop controller using an exclusive phase detector control loop and a novel pulse width modulation (PWM) scheme to effectively regulate the frequency and voltage of the grid. The effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed control strategy are evaluated through simulation and experimental studies. This approach can benefit both the customers and the grid operator, as it facilitates utilizing the batteries of the connected PEVs to supply a portion or all of the active and reactive power demand, hence regulating the frequency and vol... April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Monitoring
Keywords: feature extraction, harmonics, nonintrusive load monitoring (NILM), Stockwell transform, time-frequency transform
A crucial step in nonintrusive load monitoring (NILM) is feature extraction, which consists of signal processing techniques to extract features from voltage and current signals. This paper presents a new time-frequency feature based on Stockwell transform. The extracted features aim to describe the shape of the current transient signal by applying an energy measure on the fundamental and the harmonic frequency voices. In order to validate the proposed methodology, classical machine learning tools are applied (k-NN and decision tree classifiers) on two existing datasets (Controlled On/Off Loads Library (COOLL) and Home Equipment Laboratory Dataset (HELD1)). The classification rates achieved are clearly higher than that for other related studies in the literature, with 99.52% and 96.92% classification rates for the COOLL and HELD1 datasets, respectively.

Photovoltaic Power Forecasting: Assessment of the Impact of Multiple Sources of Spatio-Temporal Data on Forecast Accuracy
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: forecasts, Lasso, Numerical Weather Predictions, photovoltaic generation, satellite images, spatio-temporal, weather stations
The efficient integration of photovoltaic (PV) production in energy systems is conditioned by the capacity to anticipate its variability, that is, the capacity to provide accurate forecasts. From the classical forecasting methods in the state of the art dealing with a single power plant, the focus has moved in recent years to spatio-temporal approaches, where geographically dispersed data are used as input to improve forecasts of a site for the horizons up to 6 h ahead. These spatio-temporal approaches provide different performances according to the data sources available but the question of the impact of each source on the actual forecasting performance is still not evaluated. In this paper, we propose a flexible spatio-temporal model to generate PV production forecasts for horizons up to 6 h ahead and we use this model to evaluate the effect of different spatial and temporal data sources on the accuracy of the forecasts. Keywords: DC-link switching ripple, EV charging, four-wire four-leg inverter, harmonic pollution, on-board charger, pulse-width modulation, voltage ripple, voltage source inverter
This paper presents a thorough prediction of DC-link voltage switching ripples in the three-phase four-leg inverters operating in balanced and unbalanced working conditions. The unbalanced modes examined here employ the highest degree of AC current imbalance while still preserving three-phase operation. This behavior can be found in many grid-connected or standalone grid-forming three-phase converters that supply “heavy” single-phase loads, comprising a recent trend in smart-grid, smart electric vehicle (EV)-charging applications. In this sense, for instance, the smart EV chargers might be employed in conditions when different power is drawn/injected from/to the grid, providing power conditioning services to the latter. The analysis of three-phase four-leg inverters is then extended to single-phase operations typical of home-charging or vehicle-to-home (V2H) applications. Their performances in terms of DC-link voltage switching ripple are demonstrated. Two of the most common carrier-ba... [more]

Keywords: converter, current ripple, electrical vehicle on-board charger, four-leg, harmonic distortion, neutral inductor, Optimization, pulse-width modulation (PWM), switching losses, three-phase four-wire
This paper presents a comprehensive study of peak-to-peak and root-mean-square (RMS) values of AC current ripples with balanced and unbalanced fundamental currents in a generic case of three-phase four-leg converters with uncoupled AC interface inductors present in all three phases and in neutral. The AC current ripple characteristics were determined for both phase and neutral currents, considering the sinusoidal pulse-width modulation (SPWM) method. The derived expressions are simple, effective, and ready for accurate AC current ripple calculations in three- or four-leg converters. This is particularly handy in the converter design process, since there is no need for heavy numerical simulations to determine an optimal set of design parameters, such as switching frequency and line inductances, based on the grid code or load restrictions in terms of AC current ripple. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, cryogenics, hydrogen systems, vortex tubes
Improving efficiency of hydrogen cooling in cryogenic conditions is important for the wider applications of hydrogen energy systems. The approach investigated in this study is based on a Ranque-Hilsch vortex tube (RHVT) that generates temperature separation in a working fluid. The simplicity of RHVT is also a valuable characteristic for cryogenic systems. In the present work, novel shapes of RHVT are computationally investigated with the goal to raise efficiency of the cooling process. Specifically, a smooth transition is arranged between a vortex chamber, where compressed gas is injected, and the main tube with two exit ports at the tube ends. Flow simulations have been carried out using STAR-CCM+ software with the real-gas Redlich-Kwong model for hydrogen at temperatures near 70 K. April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biodiesel, combustion and emission characteristics, engine performance, ethanol additives, idling speed
Biodiesel is known for its high cetane number and high oxygen content among other advantages, but its high viscosity and density are not trivial issues for fuel flow and atomization, especially under idling conditions. Due to low cylinder temperature and incomplete combustion, engine idling is one of the worst operating conditions. As a common fuel additive, ethanol can address some of the shortcomings of biodiesel. This work evaluated the combustion and emission characteristics of different concentrations of ethanol additives on a diesel engine fueled with palm oil biodiesel under idling conditions. The results show that ethanol helps to increase peak cylinder pressure and heat release rate, suppressing the production of certain emissions with a maximum reduction in smoke opacity of 71%.
