Analysis of the Head of a Simulation Crash Test Dummy with Speed Motion
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: computer simulation, crash test, dummy
The article presents a model of an anthropometric dummy designed for low velocity crash tests, designed in ADAMS. The model consists of rigid bodies connected with special joints with appropriately selected stiffness and damping. The simulation dummy has the appropriate dimensions, shape, and mass of individual elements to suit a 50 percentile male. The purpose of this article is to draw attention to low speed crash tests. Current dummies such as THOR and Hybrid III are used for crash tests at speeds above 40 km/h. In contrast, the low-speed test dummy currently used is the BioRID-II dummy, which is mainly adapted to the whiplash test at speeds of up to 16km/h. Thus, it can be seen that there is a gap in the use of crash test dummies. There are no low-speed dummies for side and front crash tests, and there are no dummies for rear crash tests between 16 km/h and 25 km/h. Which corresponds to a collision of a passenger vehicle with a hard obstacle at a speed of 30 km/h. Therefore, in col... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cryogenic engine, liquid nitrogen engine, refrigeration system
It has been proven that performance gains in liquid nitrogen (LN2) engine systems, generating simultaneous cooling and auxiliary power, can be achieved through integration of a dedicated heat exchange fluid (HEF) circuit. The novel, HEF enhanced LN2 engine system can be utilised as an optimised hybrid solution for commercial refrigeration trucks. Although the benefits arising from HEF addition have been researched, there are no articles investigating the effect of changing the HEF composition on engine performance. This article reports a detailed experimental investigation on the performance of a novel, HEF enhanced LN2 engine system. The key contribution of the current study is the knowledge generated from investigating the impact of different HEF compositions on the engine performance under different HEF temperatures, N2 inlet conditions and engine speeds. The HEF composition was varied through changing the water content in the mixture. A thermodynamic model based on an idealised cyc... [more]

Techno-Economic Analysis of Biodiesel Production from Microbial Oil Using Cardoon Stalks as Carbon Source
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: cardoon stalks, microbial oil, production cost, sensitivity analysis, yeast biodiesel
Today one of the most interesting ways to produce biodiesel is based on the use of oleaginous microorganisms, which can accumulate microbial oil with a composition similar to vegetable oils. In this paper, we present a thermo-chemical numerical model of the yeast biodiesel production process, considering cardoon stalks as raw material. The simulation is performed subdividing the process into the following sections: steam explosion pre-treatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, lipid production, lipid extraction, and alkali-catalyzed transesterification. Numerical results show that 406.4 t of biodiesel can be produced starting from 10,000 t of lignocellulosic biomass. An economic analysis indicates a biodiesel production cost of 12.8 USD/kg, thus suggesting the need to increase the capacity plant and the lipid yield to make the project economically attractive. In this regard, a sensitivity analysis is also performed considering an ideal lipid yield of 22% and 100,000 t of lignocellulosic biomass.... [more]

Varying Ignition Quality of a Fuel for a HCCI Engine Using a Photochemically-Controlled Additive: The Development of a ‘Smart’ Fuel
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: 1,3-cyclohexadiene, 1,3,5-hexatriene, fuel additive, HCCI, ignition, photo-chemical
This study examines the possibility to provide control over ignition timing in a homogeneous charge compression ignition engine (HCCI) using a fuel additive whose molecular structure can be adapted upon exposure to UV light. The UV adapted molecule has a greater influence on retarding ignition than the original molecule, hence the ignition time can be modulated upon expose to UV light. The new fuel is referred to as a ‘smart fuel’. The fuel additive is in the form of 1,3-cyclohexadiene (CHD), upon UV exposure it undergoes electro-cyclic ring opening to form 1,3,5-hexatriene (HT). Various solutions of iso-octane, n-heptane and CHD have been irradiated by UV light for different amounts of time. CHD to HT conversion was examined using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. A primary reference fuel (PRF) mixture of 90% iso-octane and 10% n-heptane was used as a baseline in an optically accessible combustion chamber in a large bore, single cylinder compression ignition engine. Early Detection of Broken Rotor Bars in Inverter-Fed Induction Motors Using Speed Analysis of Startup Transients
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Information Management
Keywords: Fault Detection, fault diagnosis, frequency analysis, induction motors, rotating machines, signal processing, spectral analysis, time-frequency decompositions
The fault diagnosis of electrical machines during startup transients has received increasing attention regarding the possibility of detecting faults early. Induction motors are no exception, and motor current signature analysis has become one of the most popular techniques for determining the condition of various motor components. However, in the case of inverter powered systems, the condition of a motor is difficult to determine from the stator current because fault signatures could overlap with other signatures produced by the inverter, low-slip operation, load oscillations, and other non-stationary conditions. This paper presents a speed signature analysis methodology for a reliable broken rotor bar diagnosis in inverter-fed induction motors. The proposed fault detection is based on tracking the speed fault signature in the time-frequency domain. As a result, different fault severity levels and load oscillations can be identified. The promising results show that this technique can b... [more]

Fault Sealing Evaluation of a Strike-Slip Fault Based on Normal Stress: A Case Study from Eastern Junggar Basin, NW China
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: displacement pressure, normal stress of fault plane, numerical simulation of stress, sealing of faults, strike slip fault
The sealing of a fault zone has been a focus for geological studies in the past decades. The majority of previous studies have focused on the extensional regimes, where the displacement pressure difference between fault rock and reservoir was used to evaluate the fault-sealing property from the basic principle of fault sealing. When considering the displacement pressure difference, the impact of gravity on the fault rock was considered, whereas the impact of horizontal stress was ignored. In this study, we utilize the displacement pressure difference as an index to evaluate the sealing capacity of strike-slip faults, in which both the impacts of gravity and horizontal stress on the fault rocks are all integrated. By calculating the values of σH/σV and σh/σV in the vicinity of fault planes, the coefficient K of compaction impacts on fault rocks between normal stress to fault planes and gravity was then determined. By revealing the quantitative relationship between the displacement press... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: Biomass, empty fruit bunches, hydrothermal treatment, subcritical water
Hydrothermal pretreatment of biomass can improve fuel characteristics based on the decomposition properties of subcritical water. Thus, this study used a hydrothermal treatment to improve the fuel characteristics of empty fruit bunches (EFBs), which are generated as waste after palm oil extraction. The experimental reaction temperature was increased from 180 °C to 250 °C at an interval of 10 °C and the mass ratios between the dry sample and water content were set to 1:8 and 1:16 so that the sample was sufficiently immersed. Additionally, the material properties of EFB under hydrothermal treatment conditions were investigated using mass and energy yields, elemental analysis, proximate analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, derivative thermogravimetry, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis of the reaction products. As the reaction temperature increased, the fixed carbon content and heating value increased because volatile matter, including oxygen, was removed first, which i... [more]

Development and Validation of a Machine Learned Turbulence Model
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: DNS, Machine Learning, turbulence modeling
A stand-alone machine learned turbulence model is developed and applied for the solution of steady and unsteady boundary layer equations, and issues and constraints associated with the model are investigated. The results demonstrate that an accurately trained machine learned model can provide grid convergent, smooth solutions, work in extrapolation mode, and converge to a correct solution from ill-posed flow conditions. The accuracy of the machine learned response surface depends on the choice of flow variables, and training approach to minimize the overlap in the datasets. For the former, grouping flow variables into a problem relevant parameter for input features is desirable. For the latter, incorporation of physics-based constraints during training is helpful. Data clustering is also identified to be a useful tool as it avoids skewness of the model towards a dominant flow feature.

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: carbon mitigation, cement industry, decision support, energy and environmental policy, green innovation, industrial emissions, management, policy evaluation, sustainable energy use, system dynamics
Cement is the key ingredient in concrete, which is the most consumed resource on the planet after water. As an energy-intensive industry, cement production is one of the largest sources of greenhouse emissions in the world today. The demand for cement is synonymous with the growth in infrastructure demand and per-capita gross domestic product in the world, calling the need for mitigation measures within the industry in order to contribute to the global climate change efforts. System dynamics (SD) is a simulation approach that is used for studying the nonlinear behaviours in complex systems over time, often used in industrial domains for emission forecasts as well as policy experimentation. With the adoption rates of mitigation strategies in the cement industry being inadequate, there is a need for improvisation in policymaking through better decision-support tools. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: active network management, distributed PV integration, PV interconnection agreement, renewable integration
With the increasing share of distributed energy resources on the electric grid, utility companies are facing significant decisions about infrastructure upgrades. An alternative to extensive and capital-intensive upgrades is to offer non-firm interconnection opportunities to distributed generators, via a coordinated operation of utility scale resources. This paper introduces a novel flexible interconnection option based on the last-in, first-out principles of access aimed at minimizing the unnecessary non-firm generation energy curtailment by balancing access rights and contribution to thermal overloads. Although we focus on solar photovoltaic (PV) plants in this work, the introduced flexible interconnection option applies to any distributed generation technology. The curtailment risk of individual non-firm PV units is evaluated across a range of PV penetration levels in a yearlong quasi-static time-series simulation on a real-world feeder. April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: AC motor drives, asymmetric five-segment switching, current control, FPGA control, SVPWM ASIC
This paper presents the design and implementation of an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) for a discrete-time current control and space-vector pulse-width modulation (SVPWM) with asymmetric five-segment switching scheme for AC motor drives. As compared to a conventional three-phase symmetric seven-segment switching SVPWM scheme, the proposed method involves five-segment two-phase switching in each switching period, so the inverter switching times and power loss can be reduced by 33%. In addition, the produced PWM signal is asymmetric with respect to the center-symmetric triangular carrier wave, and the voltage command signal from the discrete-time current control output can be given in each half period of the PWM switching time interval, hence increasing the system bandwidth and allowing the motor drive system with better dynamic response. For the verification of the proposed SVPWM modulation scheme, the current control function in the stationary reference frame is also in... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: anaerobic co-digestion, biochemical methane potential, characteristic wavelengths, near infrared spectroscopy, partial least squares
Biochemical methane potential (BMP) of anaerobic co-digestion (co-AD) feedstocks is an essential basis for optimizing ratios of materials. Given the time-consuming shortage of conventional BMP tests, a rapid estimated method was proposed for BMP of co-AD—with straw and feces as feedstocks—based on near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) combined with chemometrics. Partial least squares with several variable selection algorithms were used for establishing calibration models. Variable selection methods were constructed by the genetic simulated annealing algorithm (GSA) combined with interval partial least squares (iPLS), synergy iPLS, backward iPLS, and competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS), respectively. By comparing the modeling performances of characteristic wavelengths selected by different algorithms, it was found that the model constructed using 57 characteristic wavelengths selected by CARS-GSA had the best prediction accuracy. An Efficiency Analysis of 27 Level Single-Phase Asymmetric Inverter without Regeneration
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: asymmetric inverters, DC—AC Converters, efficiency, THD minimization
For medium voltage applications, multilevel inverters are used. One of its classic topologies is the Cascaded H-Bridge, which requires isolated DC voltages to work. Depending on the DC voltage ratio used in the Cascaded H-bridge can be classified into symmetric and asymmetric. In comparison between symmetric and asymmetric inverters, the latter can generate an AC output voltage with more output voltage levels. DC voltage ratio most documented are binary and trinary. The last can generate an AC voltage of 3 = 27 levels is obtained, using n = 3 inverters in cascade and NLM modulation, which generates a flow power of the load to the inverters (regeneration). This work analyzes the semiconductor losses (switching and conduction) and the THD of the AC output voltage in function of index modulation, considering a non-regenerative modulation technique for a 27-level single-phase asymmetric inverter. To confirm the theoretical analyzes, simulation and experimental results are shown.

Despite the nonlinearity of the underlying dynamics, using Koopman operator theory framework in this study we show that a linear second order model embedding, that captures the physics that occur inside a single or multi zone space does well when compared with data simulated using EnergyPlus. This class of models has low complexity. We show that their parameters have physical significance for the large-scale dynamics of a building and are correlated to concepts such as the thermal mass. Optimization of Thermal Backfill Configurations for Desired High-Voltage Power Cables Ampacity
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: ampacity, economic optimization, high-voltage power cables, Modelling
The ampacity of high-voltage power cables depends, among others, on their core cross-sectional area as well as thermal resistivity of the thermal backfill surrounding the cables. The cross-sectional area of the power cables’ core is selected according to the expected power to be transferred via the cable system. Usually, the higher the power transfer required, the higher the cross-sectional area of the core. However, the cost of high-voltage power cables is relatively high and strictly depends on the dimensions of the core. Therefore, from the economic point of view, it is interesting to focus on the improvement of the thermal condition around the cables, by changing the dimension of the thermal backfill, instead of increasing the power cables’ core cross-sectional area. In practice, it is important to find the optimal dimensions of both cable core and thermal backfill to achieve the economically attractive solution of the power cable transfer system.
