Energy Consumption in a Distributional Warehouse: A Practical Case Study for Different Warehouse Technologies
Konrad Lewczuk, Michał Kłodawski, Paweł Gepner
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: automation index, energy consumption, warehouse, warehouse technology
Energy consumption by distribution warehouses has become an essential component of green warehousing and research on reducing the carbon footprint of supply chains. Energy consumption in warehousing is a complex and multilayered problem, which is generally considered in the literature in relation to its detailed components, not as part of comparative studies. In this article, the authors consider six cross-sectional variants of warehouse technology, from manual to fully automatic, and analyze the energy consumption of a warehouse in various configurations. A methodology for estimating storage space and determining energy consumption is proposed. The energy balance of the warehouse variants includes energy for material handling equipment operation, energy consumption for building maintenance (heating, cooling, lighting, etc.), and energy generated by the photovoltaic system on the roof. Then, the operational costs of the variants are estimated and, on their basis, an automation index is... [more]

Keywords: activated carbon, hybrid supercapacitor, impulsive electronic systems, iodide, photo-charger, redox electrolyte
The one of the most important issues in constructing light-harvesting photovoltaic (PV) systems with a charge storage element is its reliable and uninterrupted use in highly variable and weather-dependent conditions in everyday applications. Herein, we report the construction and applicability evaluation of a ready-to-use portable solar charger comprising a silicon solar cell and an enhanced energy hybrid supercapacitor using activated carbon electrodes and iodide-based aqueous electrolyte to stabilise the PV power under fluctuating light conditions. The optimised electrode/electrolyte combination of a supercapacitor was used for the construction of a 60 F/3 V module by a proper adjustment of the series and parallel connections between the CR2032 coin cells. The final photo-rechargeable device was tested as a potential supporting system for pulse electronic applications under various laboratory conditions (temperature of 15 and 25 °C, solar irradiation of 600 and 1000 W m−2).

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy loss analysis, energy-efficient hydraulics, hydraulic systems, mobile machinery, power map, Sankey plot
In recent years, much research has focused on reducing the power consumption of mobile hydraulic machines due to rising fuel costs, regulations on combustion engine emissions and the need to reduce the size and weight of the storage devices in hybrid drives. Current approaches to improve the energy efficiency of a hydraulic system can be classified into four basic groups: reduction of the energy demand, recovery of part of the supplied energy (ERS systems), regeneration of part of the supplied energy and reuse of the recovered and regenerated energy (hybrid systems). Today’s mobile hydraulic systems are often complex, perform different tasks and work under different load conditions, which makes it difficult to analyse energy losses. A study of the energy losses of a hydraulic system from different points of view, such as an energy balance for a complete machine cycle, an analysis of the individual cycle phases and a power analysis for the different operation quadrants of the actuators,... April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: computer support systems, decision making, dredging, port
The aim of the research was to create a decision-making model, which would be able to support planning, organizing and conducting the dredging works in the port area. The proposed solution is a multiple element system which enables to verify, in a comprehensive way, the majority of the aspects determining the quality and the time of dredging enterprise realization. The paper presents an original approach to the decision-making process during the organization of dredging works, using the computer program. In order to achieve the main goal of the study, the conditions of dredging works were considered. Furthermore, the factors that have an influence on the schedule of the project were evaluated and algorithms, as well as process organization schemes, were developed. If it is not enough, the decision models corresponding to the discussed issue were analysed and the computer program was created. And last but not the least, the proposed project and equipment were verified using a simulation... [more]
The Power of Electricity: How Effective Is It in Promoting Sustainable Development in Rural Off-Grid Islands in the Philippines?
Lorafe Lozano, Evelyn B. Taboada
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: electricity access, energy trilemma, multi-tier framework, rural electrification, sustainable development assessment
Electrification plays a crucial role in the advancement of rural communities but establishing its impact to the communities’ sustainable development remains a challenge. This paper presents a pragmatic framework for assessing how electrification affects sustainable development at the grassroots level with eight indicators in the economic, technical, social, and environmental dimensions highlighted. An exploratory factor analysis approach is applied to determine how these dimensions contribute to the community’s overall sustainable development. The framework is applied in two islands in the Philippines of less than 500 households and varying electrification levels. Results indicate that Gilutongan Island, which has less than 24-h electricity access rarely find productive uses of electricity and still make use of conventional fuels for lighting. Meanwhile, Cobrador Island, which has 24-h access see improvements in almost all aspects, although they are slightly burdened by the unaffordabi... [more]

Robert Sekret, Przemysław Starzec
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cold storage, ice, latent heat, phase-change material, thermal energy storage
The paper presents the investigation of a prototype cold accumulator using water−ice latent heat for the cold storage process. The concept of the cold accumulator was based on a 200-L-capacity cylindrical storage tank in which spherical capsules filled with water were placed. Beds of polypropylene capsules with diameters of 80 mm, 70 mm, and 60 mm were used in the tests. The cold accumulator operated with a water−air heat pump. Based on the test results, the following parameters were calculated: the cooling capacity, cooling power, energy efficiency of the cold storage, and energy efficiency ratio (EER) of the accumulator. The obtained measurement results were described with mathematical relationships (allowing for measurement error) using criterial numbers and the developed “Research Stand Factor Number” (RSFN) index. It has been found that, for the prototype cold accumulator under investigation, the maximum values of the cooling capacity (17 kWh or 85.3 kWh per cubic meter of the acc... [more]
Growth and Economic Performance of the Norwegian Wind Power Industry and Some Aspects of the Nordic Electricity Market
Johannes Idsø
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: LCOE, producer’s profit, the Nordic electricity market, wind power in Norway
Electricity has been produced in Norway in hydropower plants since 1877. The first wind power plant was put into operation in 1986. The growth in wind power production was weak in the first years after the turn of the millennium, but after Norway joined the Swedish subsidy scheme Tradable Green Certificates in 2012, there was significant growth in the wind power industry. While most of the hydropower production in Norway is owned by the public sector, the majority of wind power production is owned by foreign investors. Since wind power has been very much discussed in Norway, a levelized cost of energy (LCOE) model that can be well suited for this type of discussion is presented. The point here is that one must include all the costs, including the externalities. The Norwegian electricity market is dominated by a single player: Nord Pool. Ninety-six percent of all the electricity produced in Norway is sold through the power exchange Nord Pool, and the prices set by Nord Pool affect the f... [more]
Optimal Energy Management of a Grid-Tied Solar PV-Battery Microgrid: A Reinforcement Learning Approach
Grace Muriithi, Sunetra Chowdhury
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: Markov decision process, microgrid, Q-learning, renewable energy resources, smart control policy
In the near future, microgrids will become more prevalent as they play a critical role in integrating distributed renewable energy resources into the main grid. Nevertheless, renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind energy can be extremely volatile as they are weather dependent. These resources coupled with demand can lead to random variations on both the generation and load sides, thus complicating optimal energy management. In this article, a reinforcement learning approach has been proposed to deal with this non-stationary scenario, in which the energy management system (EMS) is modelled as a Markov decision process (MDP). A novel modification of the control problem has been presented that improves the use of energy stored in the battery such that the dynamic demand is not subjected to future high grid tariffs. A comprehensive reward function has also been developed which decreases infeasible action explorations thus improving the performance of the data-driven technique. A... [more]

Xiaojun Zhao, Xiuhui Chai, Xiaoqiang Guo, Ahmad Waseem, Xiaohuan Wang, Chunjiang Zhang
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: impedance matching, impedance model, operation states, power flow, UPQC
Different from the extant power flow analysis methods, this paper discusses the power flows for the unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) in three-phase four-wire systems from the point of view of impedance matching. To this end, combined with the designed control strategies, the establishing method of the UPQC impedance model is presented, and on this basis, the UPQC system can be equivalent to an adjustable impedance model. After that, a concept of impedance matching is introduced into this impedance model to study the operation principle for the UPQC system, i.e., how the system changes its operation states and power flow under the grid voltage variations through discussing the matching relationships among node impedances. In this way, the nodes of the series and parallel converter are matched into two sets of impedances in opposite directions, which mean that one converter operates in rectifier state to draw the energy and the other one operates in inverter state to transmit the... Innovation of Pump as Turbine According to Calculation Model for Francis Turbine Design
Martin Polák
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: calculation model, efficiency, Francis turbine, hydropower, pump as turbine (PAT)
The effective utilization of micro hydropower sources is often realized through the use of pumps as turbines (PAT). The efficiency of PAT is about the same as that of the original pump. A further increase in efficiency and power output can be achieved by modifying the parts interacting with the flow, especially the impeller and the adjacent volute casing and draft tube. This paper presents a user-friendly calculation model of Francis turbine design and its application for PAT geometry modification. Two different modifications of a single-stage radial centrifugal pump were designed according to this model. The first modification (Turbine) consisted of a complete revision of the impeller geometry, volute casing and draft tube, which corresponded to a conventional Francis turbine. The second modification (Hybrid) was based on altered calculation model and consisted of a modification of only the impeller, which can be used in the original volute casing. Both modifications were tested on hy... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: climate-neutral fuel, digested sewage sludge, economic feasibility, Energy Efficiency, hydrochar, hydrothermal carbonization, nutrient recovery, phosphorus recovery
Phosphorus recovery from waste biomass is becoming increasingly important, given that phosphorus is an exhaustible non-renewable resource. For the recovery of plant nutrients and production of climate-neutral fuel from wet waste streams, hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) has been suggested as a promising technology. In this study, digested sewage sludge (DSS) was used as waste material for phosphorus and nitrogen recovery. HTC was conducted at 200 °C for 4 h, followed by phosphorus stripping (PS) or leaching (PL) at room temperature. The results showed that for PS and PL around 84% and 71% of phosphorus, as well as 53% and 54% of nitrogen, respectively, could be recovered in the liquid phase (process water and/or extract). Heavy metals were mainly transferred to the hydrochar and only <1 ppm of Cd and 21−43 ppm of Zn were found to be in the liquid phase of the acid treatments. According to the economic feasibility calculation, the HTC-treatment per dry ton DSS with an industrial-scal... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: federal forest restoration., feedstock, forest harvesting, forest health, forest management, harvesting costs, logging systems, rural development, utilization, woody biomass
Over half of California’s forestland is managed by the US Forest Service, and the agency has identified a need to scale up forest restoration treatments in the state to one million acres per year by 2025. However, the high costs of mechanical fuel reduction and lack of markets for biomass pose significant barriers to accomplishing this target. The objectives of this case study were: (1) to identify costs of forest restoration treatments on federally-managed land in the Northern Sierra under a variety of harvesting scenarios and haul distances to biomass facilities, and (2) to understand what market prices for biomass must be offered to support such efforts. We modeled silvicultural prescription and harvesting options, machine productivity and costs, and transportation costs to assess economic thresholds. Biomass harvest, chip, and haul costs ranged from $55/bone dry ton to $118/bone dry ton, depending on the harvesting system scenario and distance from the biomass disposal site. Result... [more]

Adam Jakubas, Paweł Jabłoński
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: FEMM, magnetogram, micro-Hall sensors, non-destructive testing, soft magnetic composites, surface and subsurface defects
This article presents a method for detecting defects and assessing their size in soft magnetic composites (SMCs) based on magnetograms obtained from a magnetic field camera and a numerical analysis of the magnetic field around them. For the purpose of the experiment, toroidal samples of a metal−polymer composite were made, in which holes and gaps simulating defects were prepared. The magnetic camera allowed for registering the magnetic flux density image near the surface of the samples. As a result, magnetograms with information about the location and geometry of defects were obtained. A numerical analysis was used to investigate the influence of various factors, such as defect depth, its size and material permeability. Theoretical changes in magnetic field over defects stay in good agreement with measurements, which is a strong indication that surface field magnetograms can be useful in a quality assessment of the considered composites. The effectiveness and usefulness of the method i... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: effective pressure, pressure transient analysis, reservoir permeability evolution, stress-sensitive reservoir
In this paper, we present a mathematical model to predict the evolution of rock permeability depending on effective pressure during oil production. The model is based on the use of the results of well testing data from wells operating in the oil fields of the Perm−Solikamsk region in the north of the Volgo Ural oil and gas province. Dependences of the change in flow characteristics in the reservoir on the effective pressure were established. We performed a comparative assessment using permeability and effective pressure data that were normalized to dimensionless forms of k/ko and P/Po. The factors and their influence on the nature of the change in permeability from the reservoir pressure were determined. Depending on the type of rock, its composition, initial permeability, and bedding conditions, we determined the limits of variation of the constants in empirical equations describing the change in the permeability of rocks from the effective pressure. The mathematical model we develope... [more]

Keywords: coastal waters, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), hydrographic surveys, Single Beam Echo Sounders (SBES), Territorial Sea Baseline (TSB), Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV)
The Territorial Sea Baseline (TSB) allows coastal states to define the maritime boundaries, such as: contiguous zone, continental shelf, exclusive economic zone and territorial sea. Their delimitations determine what rights (jurisdiction and sovereignty) a given coastal state is entitled to. For many years, the problem of delimiting baseline was considered in two aspects: legal (lack of clear-cut regulations and different interpretations) and measurement (lack of research tools for precise and reliable depth measurement in ultra-shallow waters). This paper aimed to define the seasonal variability of the TSB in 2018−2020. The survey was conducted in three representative waterbodies of the Republic of Poland: open sea, river mouth and exit from a large port, differing between each other in seabed shape. Baseline measurements were carried out with Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USV), equipped with Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) geodetic receivers and miniature Single Beam Echo Soun... [more]
A Quantitative Risk-Averse Model for Optimal Management of Multi-Source Standalone Microgrid with Demand Response and Pumped Hydro Storage
Yongqi Zhao, Jiajia Chen
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: conditional value-at-credibility, demand response, pumped hydro storage, risk evaluation, standalone microgrid
High renewable energy integrated standalone microgrid requires greater ramping capabilities from other dispatchable resources to compensate for effects of the intermittent and variability of the renewable energy available in the system. To address this, a wind-solar-thermal-hydro-coupled multi-source standalone microgrid (WSTHcMSSM) considering demand response and pumped hydro storage is proposed to maximize the operating profit and get the optimal solution of the multi-source generation system by taking advantage of multi-resource complementarity. In WSTHcMSSM, we present a conditional value-at-credibility (CVaC)-based quantitative risk-averse model for uncertain wind and solar power by thoroughly examining the randomness and fuzziness characteristics. Additionally, the most severe issues caused by wind and solar power fluctuation happen during the peak load, and this paper proposes a load partitioning method to get the time-of-use (TOU) in demand response for peak load shaving. Sławomira Hajduk, Dorota Jelonek
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ISO 37120′s indicators, multi-criteria decision making method, smart city, urban energy
This paper presents the use of multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) for the evaluation of smart cities. During the development of the method, the importance of the decision-making approach in the linear ordering of cities was presented. The method of using the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) was proposed for the preparation of ranking. The method was verified by the application in the measurement of energy performance in smart cities. The authors conducted a literature review of research papers related to urban energy and MCDM published in the period from 2010 to 2020. The paper uses data from the World Council on City Data (WCCD). The research conducted allowed for the identification of the most popular MCDM techniques in the field of urban energy such as TOPSIS, AHP and DEA. The TOPSIS technique was used to organize and group the analyzed cities. Porto took the top position, whereas Buenos Aries was the last.

Keywords: blade angle, flow unsteadiness, numerical simulation, pressure pulsation, pump as turbine
The adoption of pumps as turbines (PATs) in both small-scale hydroelectric plants and water supply systems has brought about various advantages, the most recognized being cost-effectiveness compared to other hydroturbines. However, due to their lack of flow control ability, their intolerance to off-design operations constitutes a tough shortfall. Moreover, since this technology is new, PAT flow dynamics are not yet well understood. Therefore, this study intends to numerically investigate the mixed-flow PAT’s pump mode flow dynamics for five operating conditions from optimum (1 QBEP) to deep part-load (0.41 QBEP) conditions. Moreover, the effect of runner blade angle on them is investigated, considering three angles, namely −2°, 0°, and 2°. PAT flow stability was found to deteriorate as the flow decreased, where associated pressure pulsation level worsened at different flow zones. In addition, the blade angle increase led to correspondingly increasing flow unsteadiness and pressure puls... [more]
Measuring the Energy Efficiency of Evaporative Systems through a New Index—EvaCOP
Alexandre F. Santos, Pedro D. Gaspar, Heraldo J. L. Souza
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: COP, Energy Efficiency, EUED, evaporative systems
Evaporative systems are probably the oldest technology for thermal comfort. However, they are still an essential technology in the food industry, environments for thermal comfort, and even for cooling data centers. Standards have been improved to compare the energy efficiency of this type of equipment. Using AHRI concepts with temperature data from the 29 most populous cities in the world, an EvaCOP index was created from temperatures that are easier to simulate than current parameters. The index parameters were tested in a laboratory located in Curitiba (Brazil). EvaCOP values of 45.58 and 25.77 W/W were found in the calculation in two different simulated equipment and compared with the compression cycle systems that in the most efficient machines is around 6.29 W/W.

The green energy transition is associated with the use of a wide range of metals and minerals that are exhaustible. Most of these minerals are limited in access due to small resource fields, their concentration in several locations and a broader scale of industry usage which is not limited exclusively to energy and environmental sectors. This article classifies 17 minerals that are critical in the green energy transition concerning the 10 main technologies. The following classification signs of metal resources were used: (1) the absolute amount of metals used in the current period for energy; (2) projected annual demand in 2050 from energy technologies as a percentage of the current rate; (3) the number of technologies where there is a need for an individual metal; (4) cumulative emissions of CO2, which are associated with metal production; (5) period of reserves availability; (6) the number of countries that produced more than 1% of global production; (7) countries with the maximum an... Review of Impedance-Based Analysis Methods Applied to Grid-Forming Inverters in Inverter-Dominated Grids
Ishita Ray
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: control design, grid-forming, impedance, inverter, stability
As the use of distributed generation with power electronics-based interfaces increases, the separation between DC and AC parts of the grid is reduced. In such inverter-dominated AC grids, impedance-based analysis methods are proving to be more powerful than traditional state-space-based analysis methods. Even the conventional parameters and standards used to estimate the stability of generators and stronger grids cannot fully capture the dynamics of weaker, inverter-dominated grids. It then stands to reason that system impedances that are commonly used to analyze DC systems will be useful in the analysis of grid-forming inverters in these hybrid systems. To understand the value of studying the impedances of inverters and other elements in weak AC grids, this article reviews and describes the various ways in which impedance-based analyses can be used to define, assess, and improve the performance of grid-forming inverter controllers. An exemplary case using the conventional P-f/Q-V droo... [more]

Keywords: agent-based modeling, energy supply chain, Monte Carlo simulation, multi-objective optimization, non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm, oil and gas supply chain, structure dynamics, uncertainty
The work presents a simulation-based Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) framework for efficient production planning in Energy Supply Chains (ESCs). An Agent-based Model (ABM) that is more comprehensive than others adopted in the literature is developed to simulate the agent’s uncertain behaviors and the transaction processes stochastically occurring in dynamically changing ESC structures. These are important realistic characteristics that are rarely considered. The simulation is embedded into a Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II)-based optimization scheme to identify the Pareto solutions for which the ESC total profit is maximized and the disequilibrium among its agent’s profits is minimized, while uncertainty is accounted for by Monte Carlo (MC) sampling. An oil and gas ESC model with five layers is considered to show the proposed framework and its capability of enabling efficient management of the ESC sustained production while considering the agent’s uncertain interact... April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cooling, fuel cell, metal foam, PEM, stacks
A new study investigating the cooling efficacy of air flow inside open-cell metal foam embedded in aluminum models of fuel-cell stacks is described. A model based on a commercial stack was simulated and tested experimentally. This stack has three proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells, each having an active area of 100 cm2, with a total output power of 500 W. The state-of-the-art cooling of this stack employs water in serpentine flow channels. The new design of the current investigation replaces these channels with metal foam and replaces the actual fuel cells with aluminum plates. The constant heat flux on these plates is equivalent to the maximum heat dissipation of the stack. Forced air is employed as the coolant. The aluminum foam used had an open-pore size of 0.65 mm and an after-compression porosity of 60%. Local temperatures in the stack and pumping power were calculated for various air-flow velocities in the range of 0.2−1.5 m/s by numerical simulation and were determined by... [more]
