Cascaded H-Bridge Converter Based on Current-Source Inverter with DC Links Magnetically Coupled to Reduce the DC Inductors Value
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: cascaded H-Bridge, current-source inverter, non-linear control, oscillating power compensation
The main drawback of the Cascaded-H Bridge converter based on three-phase/single-phase current-source inverters is the large DC inductors needed to limit the variation of the DC current caused by the single-phase inverter oscillating power. If the oscillating power is somehow compensated, then the DC inductor can be designed just as a function of the semiconductors’ switching frequency, reducing its value. This work explores the use of three-phase/single-phase cells magnetically coupled through their DC links to compensate for the oscillating power among them and, therefore, reduce the DC inductor value. At the same time, front ends controlled by a non-linear control strategy equalize the DC currents among coupled cells to avoid saturating the magnetic core. The effectiveness of the proposal is demonstrated using mathematical analysis and corroborated by computational simulation for a 110 kVA load per phase and experimental tests in a 2 kVA laboratory prototype. The outcomes show that... [more]

Selection of the Optimal Window Type and Orientation for the Two Cities in Serbia and One in Slovakia
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, fillings, glazing
The necessity of having windows on any building’s façade is not questionable. However, not every window is suitable for any building. The selection of an adequate window must include the analysis of various factors—the most important ones are the type of window (e.g., single or double glazing); filling gas in cavities (e.g., air, argon or some other gas); and placing, i.e., orientation of a window on a façade (facing north, south, or east, etc.). The research presented in this paper is dealing with the calculation of the window thermal loading for the cities of Kragujevac and Bor in Serbia and Žilina in Slovakia. These three cities were selected because they belong to different climate regions, according to the Köppen−Geiger climatic classification. The first two cities in Serbia belong to the same region Cf with difference only in the category of summer—Kragujevac Cfa and Bor Cfb—while the third city—Žilina in Slovakia—belongs to the Dfb region. The calculated thermal loading through... [more]

Impact of Economic Affluence on CO2 Emissions in CEE Countries
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CO2 emission, energy consumption, GDP, HDI index, renewable energy consumption, the EKC, urbanization
There is huge evidence for a relationship between economic growth and environmental degradation. One of the causes of environmental degradation is CO2 emission which is added to the atmosphere through human activities and excessive industrialization. The aim of this research is to examine the relationship between CO2 emissions and measures of wealth in countries of Central and Eastern Europe between 2000 and 2019. The paper extends the research on economic affluence by taking into consideration two measures of economic growth, in addition to GDP, the HDI index is included. The basis for the investigation is the EKC concept. All analyses are based on econometric models with GDP and the HDI index as independent variables. The results are not conclusive and there is no one model which best describes the relationship between CO2 emissions and economic growth. Verification of the models indicates the better fit of models with the HDI index as the measure of affluence. Moreover, the study co... [more]

Three-Dimensional Computation Fluid Dynamics Simulation of CO Methanation Reactor with Immersed Tubes
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: heat removal, immersed tubes, methanation, Simulation
CO methanation is an exothermic process, and heat removal is an essential issue for the methanation reactor. Numerical studies were carried out to investigate the performance of a 3D fluidized bed methanation reactor with immersed cooling tubes. The simulations were carried out in the frame of the Euler−Euler model to analyze the performance of the reactor. The influences of operating temperatures were studied to understand the reaction characteristics. The temperature increases rapidly neared the inlet due to the reactions. The immersed tubes were effective at removing the reaction heat. The chemical equilibrium state was achieved with an operating temperature of 682 K for the case with immersed tubes. Different control mechanisms can be found during the process of increasing and decreasing the temperature. The reaction kinetic is the dominate factor for the cases with lower temperatures, while the chemical equilibrium will play a more important role at high temperature conditions. Th... [more]

Uncovering Hidden Factors in Electricity Consumption Based on Gaussian Mixture Estimation
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Gaussian mixture, load characterization, multimodal distribution, residential load
Load characteristics play an essential role in the planning of power generation and distribution. Various undiscovered factors, which could be socioeconomic, geographic, or climatic, make it possible to describe the electricity demand by a multimodal distribution. This letter proposes a novel method based on multimodal distributions to characterize the hidden factors in electricity consumption. Consequently, a new approach is developed to evaluate the impact of the underlying factors of electricity consumption. Some quantifiable and predictable factors are analyzed in developing multimodal distribution to describe the expected demand. Simulations based on synthetic and real-world data have been conducted to demonstrate the usefulness and robustness of the proposed method.

A Multi-Scale Numerical Model for Investigation of Flame Dynamics in a Thermal Flow Reversal Reactor
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: filtration combustion, flame propagation, multi-scale model, numerical simulation, porous medium
In this paper, the flame dynamics in a thermal flow reversal reactor are studied using a multi-scale model. The challenges of the multi-scale models lie in the data exchanges between different scale models and the capture of the flame movement of the filtered combustion by the pore-scale model. Through the multi-scale method, the computational region of the porous media is divided into the inlet preheating zone, reaction zone, and outlet exhaust zone. The three models corresponding to the three zones are calculated by volume average method, pore-scale method, and volume average method respectively. Temperature distribution is used as data for real-time exchange. The results show that the multi-scale model can save computation time when compared with the pore-scale model. Compared with the volumetric average model, the multi-scale model can capture the flame front and predict the flame propagation more accurately. The flame propagation velocity increases and the flame thickness decrease... [more]

Stratified Flow of Micropolar Nanofluid over Riga Plate: Numerical Analysis
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: Brownian motion, double stratification, mixed convection, Riga plate, suction or injection, thermophoresis
In this article, we present a numerical analysis of the energy and mass transport behavior of microrotational flow via Riga plate, considering suction or injection and mixed convection. The thermal stratified parameters of nanofluid are captured using an interpretation of the well-known Keller box model, which helps us to determine the characteristic properties of the physical parameters. The formulated boundary layer equations (nonlinear partial differential equations) are transformed into coupled ODEs with nonlinearities for the stratified controlled regimes. The impact of embedded flow and all physical quantities of practical interest, such as velocity, temperature, and concentration profile, are inspected and presented through tables and graphs. We found that the heat transfer on the surface decreases for the temperature stratification factor as mass transfer increases. Additionally, the fluid velocity increases as the modified Hartmann number increases.

Keywords: diesel shunting locomotives, locomotive series ChME3, parameters of an asynchronous traction motor, the influence of gear ratio on locomotive power index, traction characteristics
One of the assumptions made during the modernization process of diesel shunting locomotives is the replacement of a diesel traction motor with a DC generator with an electric asynchronous traction motor. The article aimed to develop a method of selecting energy-efficient parameters of an asynchronous electric traction motor for diesel shunting locomotives, which will ensure that its operating energy efficiency will be as high as possible. The method was verified on the example of a locomotive series ChME3 (ЧMЭ3, ČME3, ČKD S200). It has been found that using a traction asynchronous electric drive on a ChME3 locomotive, its efficiency increases in comparison with DC electric motors by 3−5% under the long-term operation modes and by 7−10% during locomotive operation with traction at the adhesion limit. Using a new traction gearbox with a higher gear ratio expands the speed range in which the asynchronous traction drive operates with a high-efficiency factor. It is effective to use a tract... [more]

A Coupled-Inductor Interleaved LLC Resonant Converter for Wide Operation Range
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: coupled-inductor, fixed-frequency PWM, interleaved, LLC resonant, wide operation range
In this paper, a coupled-inductor interleaved LLC resonant converter (CI-ILLC) was proposed, which can achieve extensive operation range applications by multiplexing inductors and switches. In this proposed CI-ILLC, the coupled-inductor not only serves as a filter inductor but also plays the role of transformer to improve the power density. By changing the modulation methods, the proposed converter can work at three modes for a wide operation range, namely high gain (HG) mode, medium gain (MG) mode, and low gain (LG) mode. Moreover, the interleaved structure greatly reduces the current ripple and current stress of switches. Besides, in HG and MG modes, all switches can realize zero-voltage switching, with high energy transmission efficiency. Finally, the simulation and experiment results of the prototype with 120−200 V input and 50−200 V output are presented to verify the viability of the proposed converter.

Performance Analysis of Organic Rankine Cycle with the Turbine Embedded in a Generator (TEG)
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: axial-flow turbine, generator, mean-line design, organic Rankine cycle (ORC), R245fa
The organic Rankine cycle (ORC) is a thermodynamic cycle in which electrical power is generated using an organic refrigerant as a working fluid at low temperatures with low-grade enthalpy. We propose a turbine embedded in a generator (TEG), wherein the turbine rotor is embedded inside the generator rotor, thus simplifying turbine generator structure using only one bearing. The absence of tip clearance between the turbine rotor blade and casing wall in the TEG eliminates tip clearance loss, enhancing turbine efficiency. A single-stage axial-flow turbine was designed using mean-line analysis based on physical properties, and we conducted a parametric study of turbine performance, and predicted turbine efficiency and power using the tip clearance loss coefficient. When the tip clearance loss coefficient was applied, turbine isentropic efficiency and power were 0.89 and 20.42 kW, respectively, and ORC thermal efficiency was 4.81%. Conversely, the isentropic efficiency and power of the turb... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: anomaly detection, energy analytics, Machine Learning, power interruptions, unbalanced classification
Electric failures are a problem for customers and grid operators. Identifying causes and localizing the source of failures in the grid is critical. Here, we focus on a specific power grid in the Arctic region of Northern Norway. First, we collected data pertaining to the grid topology, the topography of the area, the historical meteorological data, and the historical energy consumption/production data. Then, we exploited statistical and machine-learning techniques to predict the occurrence of failures. The classification models achieve good performance, meaning that there is a significant relationship between the collected variables and fault occurrence. Thus, we interpreted the variables that mostly explain the classification results to be the main driving factors of power interruption. Wind speed of gust and local industry activity are found to be the main controlling parameters in explaining the power failure occurrences. The result could provide important information to the distrib... [more]

Keywords: engine misfire, Fault Detection, LSTM, pattern recognition, time-frequency analysis
In this work, a new approach was developed for the detection of engine misfire based on the long short-term memory recurrent neural network (LSTM RNN) using crank speed signal. The datasets are acquired from a six-cylinder-inline, turbo-charged diesel engine. Previous works investigated misfire detection in a limited range of engine running speed, running load or misfire types. All the misfire patterns are tested under wide range of running conditions of the tested engine. The traditional misfire detection method is tested on the datasets first, and the result show its limitation on high-speed low-load conditions. The LSTM RNN is a type of artificial neural network which has the ability of considering both the current input in-formation and the previous input information; hence it is helpful in extracting features of crank speed in w...
