Studies on the Impact of Hydrogen on the Results of THT Measurement Devices
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: gas fuel odorization, gas standards, Hydrogen, mixing hydrogen with natural gas, P2G, safe use of gas, THT
An essential prerequisite for safe transport and use of natural gas is their appropriate odorization. This enables the detection of uncontrolled gas leaks. Proper and systematic odorization inspection ensures both safe use of gas and continuity of the process itself. In practice, it is conducted through, among others, measuring odorant concentrations in gas. Control devices for rapid gas odorization measurements that are currently used on a large scale in the gas industry are equipped with electrochemical detectors selective for sulfur compounds like tetrahydrothiophene (THT). Because the selectivity of electrochemical detector response to one compound (e.g., THT), the available declarations of manufacturers show that detector sensitivity (indirectly also the quality of the measurement result) is influenced by the presence of increased e.g., sulfur or hydrogen compound content in the gas. Because of the lack of sufficient source literature data in this field, it was necessary to experi... [more]

Path Selection for the Inspection Robot by m-Generalized q-Neutrosophic PROMETHEE Approach
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: autonomous robot, m-generalized q-neutrosophic sets, multi-criteria decision-making, path planning, PROMETHEE
Path planning can be considered the most vital task of the autonomous robot. In this task, selecting an optimal route from the starting to the target position becomes an important problem that must be addressed when multiple competing optimization priorities are considered. Thus, a novel route assessment strategy based on a multi-criteria decision-making approach is proposed. The m-generalized q-neutrosophic PROMETHEE (PROMETHEE-mGqNS) method is applied to aggregate the competing route assessment requirements and choose an optimal route. A case study is investigated to explain the proposed strategy for path planning in a typical environment and indicates the method stability when incomplete input data characteristics are present.

Analysis of Indoor Air Pollutants and Guidelines for Space and Physical Activities in Multi-Purpose Activity Space of Elementary Schools
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: activity, Carbon Dioxide, CONTAM, elementary school, fine dust, indoor air quality, jet air turnover system, Multi-purpose activity space (MPA-space), student
Owing to the recent increase in the number of warning reports and alerts on the dangers of fine dusts, there has been an increasing concern over fine dusts among citizens. In spaces with poor ventilation, the occupants are forced to open the window to initiate natural ventilation via the direct introduction of the outside air; however, this may pose a serious challenge if the external fine-dust concentration is high. The lack of natural ventilation increases the indoor carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration, thus necessitating the installation of mechanical ventilation systems. This study analyzed the frequency of the application of mechanical ventilation systems in the Multi-purpose activity space of elementary schools, which are spaces where children require a higher indoor air quality than adults owing to the rapid increase in the CO2 concentration of the Multi-purpose activity space during activities. In addition, the architectural and equipment factors of the Multi-purpose activity sp... [more]

Toward Eco-Friendly Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSCs): Natural Dyes and Aqueous Electrolytes
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aqueous electrolyte, dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), eco-friendly DSSCs, natural dye
Due to their low cost, facile fabrication, and high-power conversion efficiency (PCE), dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have attracted much attention. Ruthenium (Ru) complex dyes and organic solvent-based electrolytes are typically used in high-efficiency DSSCs. However, Ru dyes are expensive and require a complex synthesis process. Organic solvents are toxic, environmentally hazardous, and explosive, and can cause leakage problems due to their low surface tension. This review summarizes and discusses previous works to replace them with natural dyes and water-based electrolytes to fabricate low-cost, safe, biocompatible, and environmentally friendly DSSCs. Although the performance of “eco-friendly DSSCs” remains less than 1%, continuous efforts to improve the PCE can accelerate the development of more practical devices, such as designing novel redox couples and photosensitizers, interfacial engineering of photoanodes and electrolytes, and biomimetic approaches inspired by natural sys... Keywords: AHP, cyber-attack, cybersecurity, fuzzy TOPSIS, hesitant fuzzy, industrial control systems, security assessment
Monitoring and control systems in the energy sector are specialized information structures that are not governed by the same information technology standards as the rest of the world’s information systems. Such industrial control systems are also used to handle important infrastructures, including smart grids, oil and gas facilities, nuclear power plants, water management systems, and so on. Industry equipment is handled by systems connected to the internet, either via wireless or cable connectivity, in the present digital age. Further, the system must work without fail, with the system’s availability rate being of paramount importance. Furthermore, to certify that the system is not subject to a cyber-attack, the entire system must be safeguarded against cyber security vulnerabilities, threats, and hazards. In addition, the article looks at and evaluates cyber security evaluations for industrial control systems, as well as their possible impact on the accessibility of industrial contro... [more]

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) in Precision Agriculture: Applications and Challenges
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: crop monitoring, pest management, remote sensing, UAV
Agriculture is the primary source of income in developing countries like India. Agriculture accounts for 17 percent of India’s total GDP, with almost 60 percent of the people directly or indirectly employed. While researchers and planters focus on a variety of elements to boost productivity, crop loss due to disease is one of the most serious issues they confront. Crop growth monitoring and early detection of pest infestations are still a problem. With the expansion of cultivation to wider fields, manual intervention to monitor and diagnose insect and pest infestations is becoming increasingly difficult. Failure to apply on time fertilizers and pesticides results in more crop loss and so lower output. Farmers are putting in greater effort to conserve crops, but they are failing most of the time because they are unable to adequately monitor the crops when they are infected by pests and insects. Pest infestation is also difficult to predict because it is not evenly distributed. In the re... [more]

Ensemble Learning for Predicting TOC from Well-Logs of the Unconventional Goldwyer Shale
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: canning basin, ensemble learning, Goldwyer shale, TOC, well-logs
Precise estimation of total organic carbon (TOC) is extremely important for the successful characterization of an unconventional shale reservoir. Indirect traditional continuous TOC prediction methods from well-logs fail to provide accurate TOC in complex and heterogeneous shale reservoirs. A workflow is proposed to predict a continuous TOC profile from well-logs through various ensemble learning regression models in the Goldwyer shale formation of the Canning Basin, WA. A total of 283 TOC data points from ten wells is available from the Rock-Eval analysis of the core specimen where each sample point contains three to five petrophysical logs. The core TOC varies largely, ranging from 0.16 wt % to 4.47 wt % with an average of 1.20 wt %. In addition to the conventional MLR method, four supervised machine learning methods, i.e., ANN, RF, SVM, and GB are trained, validated, and tested for continuous TOC prediction using the ensemble learning approach. To ensure robust TOC prediction, an ag... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: fractional slot motors, high power density motors, rotor losses, slot-pole combinations
Fractional slot, PMSM motors with a properly designed electromagnetic circuit allow for obtaining high power density factors (more than 4 kW per 1 kg of total motor weight). The selection of the number of magnetic poles to the specific dimensions and operating conditions of the motor, as well as the number of slots for the selected number of magnetic poles is the subject of the analysis in this article. This issue is extremely important because it affects the mass of the motor, the value of shaft torque, shaft power and the value of rotor losses. The aim of the work is to select solutions with the highest values of power density factor and, at the same time, the lowest values of rotor losses. The object of the study is a fractional slot PMSM motor with an external solid rotor core with surface permanent magnets (SPM). Motor weight is approximately 10 kg, outer diameter is 200 mm and a maximum power is 50 kW at 4800 r/min. The article analyzes the selection of magnetic poles in the rang... [more]

A Scalable Control Strategy for CHB Converters in Photovoltaic Applications
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Cascaded H-Bridge (CHB), photovoltaic plants, scalable control
Renewable energy sources are becoming more relevant in recent decades in power generation, leading to investment in developing efficient systems. Specifically, in photovoltaic energy, modular converters are attracting interest since their characteristics enable them to work at high voltage and optimize the generated energy. However, the control strategies found the literature limit the scalability potential of modular converters. The main aim of this paper is to propose a scalable control strategy for a grid-tied CHB (Cascaded H-Bridge) converter for large-scale photovoltaic power plants. The control proposed is able to take full advantage of converter scalability and modularity, being based on the parameters needed for bipolar sinusoidal PWM (Pulse Width Modulation), and thus reducing the calculus required and simplifying its implementation. Power imbalances are overcome including the zero-sequence vector injection to allow power exchange between phases. Furthermore, the parameter use... [more]

A Design Methodology for EV-WPT Systems to Resonate at Arbitrary Given Bands
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: EV-WPT, frequency splitting, magnetic coupling, multi-band, system design
Due to the effects of splitting frequency and cross coupling, the resonant frequency of the WPT system usually deviates from the given frequency band, and the system operating at the given frequency band suffers a very low output power. Ensuring that electric vehicle wireless power transfer (EV-WPT) systems operate at a resonant state is the prerequisite for efficient energy transfer. For this purpose, a novel design method by manipulating the eigenstate parameters is proposed in this paper. The proposed system can make a EV-WPT system with arbitrary coil successfully to resonate at any given bands, not just a single band. Therefore, the method designed in this article cannot only eliminate the problem of low power caused by frequency deviation, but also realize the application requirements of multiple frequency bands. Firstly, this article establishes an accurate state space model of an n-coil fully coupled EV-WPT system, and after that, the analytical current response on each circuit... [more]

Energy-Saving Potential of Thermal Diode Tank Assisted Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Systems
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: COP improvement, heat pipe, potential energy savings, refrigeration, thermal diode tank, vapor compression cycle
Lowering the condensing temperature of the Refrigeration and Air-conditioning (RAC) system has been proven to effectively increase the system’s Coefficient of Performance (COP). This paper revolves around evaluating the energy-saving generated by applying a Thermal Diode Tank (TDT) in the RAC systems. The TDT is a novel invention, which is an insulated water tank equipped with gravity heat pipes. If the TDT was placed outdoors overnight, its inside water would theoretically be at the minimum ambient temperature of the previous night. When the TDT water is used to cool the condenser of RAC systems that operate during the daytime, a higher COP of this TDT assisted RAC (TDT-RAC) system could be achieved compared with the baseline system. In this study, a steady-state performance simulation model for TDT-RAC cycles has been developed. The model reveals that the COP of the TDT-RAC cycle can be improved by 10~59% over the baseline cycle depending on the compressor types. The TDT-RAC cycle wi... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: critical infrastructure, Data Injection Attack, Machine Learning, power system, smart grid, water treatment plant
Critical infrastructures have recently been integrated with digital controls to support intelligent decision making. Although this integration provides various benefits and improvements, it also exposes the system to new cyberattacks. In particular, the injection of false data and commands into communication is one of the most common and fatal cyberattacks in critical infrastructures. Hence, in this paper, we investigate the effectiveness of machine-learning algorithms in detecting False Data Injection Attacks (FDIAs). In particular, we focus on two of the most widely used critical infrastructures, namely power systems and water treatment plants. This study focuses on tackling two key technical issues: (1) finding the set of best features under a different combination of techniques and (2) resolving the class imbalance problem using oversampling methods. Study of the Critical Pore Radius That Results in Critical Gas Saturation during Methane Hydrate Dissociation at the Single-Pore Scale: Analytical Solutions for Small Pores and Potential Implications to Methane Production from Geological Media
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: analytical solutions, critical gas saturation, gas hydrates, hydrate equilibrium, porous medium
We examine the critical pore radius that results in critical gas saturation during pure methane hydrate dissociation within geologic porous media. Critical gas saturation is defined as the fraction of gas volume inside a pore system when the methane gas phase spans the system. Analytical solutions for the critical pore radii are obtained for two, simple pore systems consisting of either a single pore-body or a single pore-body connected with a number of pore-throats. Further, we obtain critical values for pore sizes above which the production of methane gas is possible. Results shown in the current study correspond to the case when the depression of the dissociation temperature (due to the presence of small-sized pores; namely, with a pore radius of less than 100 nm) is considered. The temperature shift due to confinement in porous media is estimated through the well-known Gibbs-Thompson equation. The particular results are of interest to geological media and particularly in the methan... [more]

Experimental Study to Analyze Feasibility of a Novel Panelized Ground-Source Thermoelectric System for Building Space Heating and Cooling
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: building, ground source heat pump, Peltier effect, thermoelectric module
A thermoelectric module is a device that converts electrical energy into thermal energy through a mechanism known as the Peltier effect. A Peltier device has hot and cold sides/substrates, and heat can be pumped from the cold side to the hot side under a given voltage. By applying it in buildings and attaching it to building envelope components, such as walls, as a heating and cooling device, the heating and cooling requirements can be met by reversing the voltage applied on these two sides/substrates. In this paper, we describe a novel, panelized, ground source, radiant system design for space heating and cooling in buildings by utilizing the Peltier effect. The system is equipped with water pipes that are attached to one side of the panel and connected with a ground loop to exchange heat between the cold/hot sides of the thermoelectric module and the underground region. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CFD modelling, frictional losses, heat transfer coefficient, internally ribbed tube
This paper presents experimental determination of the heat transfer coefficient and the friction factor in an internally rifled tube. The experiment was carried out on a laboratory stand constructed in the Department of Energy of the Cracow University of Technology. The tested tube is used in a Polish power plant in a supercritical circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler with the power capacity of 460 MW. Local heat transfer coefficients were determined for Reynolds numbers included in the range from ~6000 to ~50,000, and for three levels of the heating element power. Using the obtained experimental data, a relation was developed that makes it possible to determine the dimensionless Chilton−Colburn factor. The friction factor was also determined as a function of the Reynolds number ranging from 20,000 to 90,000, and a new correlation was developed that represents the friction factor in internally ribbed tubes. Subject: Environment
Keywords: chemical recycling, cotton textile recycling, Exergy Footprint, GHG emissions
Circular economy implementations tend to decrease the human pressure on the environment, but not all produce footprint reductions. That observation brings the need for tools for the evaluation of recycling processes. Based on the Exergy Footprint concept, the presented work formulates a procedure for its application to industrial chemical recycling processes. It illustrates its application in the example of cotton waste recycling. This includes the evaluation of the entire process chain of polyethylene synthesis by recycling cotton waste. The chemical recycling stages are identified and used to construct the entire flowsheet that eliminates the cotton waste and its footprints at the expense of additional exergy input. The exergy performance of the process is evaluated. The identified exergy assets and liabilities are 138 MJ/kg ethylene and 153 MJ/kg ethylene, reducing the Exergy Footprint by 75% and the greenhouse gas footprint by 43% compared to the linear pattern of polyethylene prod... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: doubly-fed variable-speed pumped storage, Hopf bifurcation, parameter sensitivity, stability analysis
The doubly-fed variable speed pumped storage unit is a storage system suitable for joint operation with renewable energy sources to smooth the imbalance between renewable energy supply and electricity demand. However, its working principle and operation control are more complex than those of constant speed pumped storage. In this study, a nonlinear model of doubly-fed variable speed pumped storage units (VSPSUs) considering nonlinear characteristics of the head loss is established. The study finds that a supercritical Hopf bifurcation occurs in the system, and the area enclosed by the lower side of the bifurcation line and the coordinate axis is the stability domain of the system. The active power step perturbation from −0.3 to 0.3 will gradually reduce the area of the stability domain and narrow the adjustable range of the control parameters. Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: fingerprint data, frequency response analysis, power transformer, winding axial displacement
Detection of the axial displacement of power-transformer winding is important to ensure its highly reliable operation. Frequency response analysis is a promising candidate in detecting the axial displacement. However, a method of detecting the axial displacement at an incipient stage without the need for fingerprint data has not been investigated yet. This paper focuses on resonances showing a bipolar signature in the transfer function of inductive interwinding measurement, which is sensitive to the axial displacement of the winding. Transfer functions in the inductive interwinding measurements of eight power transformers are measured before shipping to elucidate the features of resonances showing a bipolar signature. The measured resonances showing the bipolar signature can be divided into the “stair type” and the “crossing-curve type”. It is found that the grounding points in an inductive interwinding measurement determine the type of resonance showing the bipolar signature, irrespec... [more]

Probability-Based Customizable Modeling and Simulation of Protective Devices in Power Distribution Systems
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: contactor, customizable, fuse, Modelling, power distribution system, Simulation, thermal magnetic circuit breaker
Fused contactors and thermal magnetic circuit breakers are commonly applied protective devices in power distribution systems to protect the circuits when short-circuit faults occur. A power distribution system may contain various makes and models of protective devices, as a result, customizable simulation models for protective devices are demanded to effectively conduct system-level reliable analyses. To build the models, thermal energy-based data analysis methodologies are first applied to the protective devices’ physical properties, based on the manufacturer’s time/current data sheet. The models are further enhanced by integrating probability tools to simulate uncertainties in real-world application facts, for example, fortuity, variance, and failure rate. The customizable models are expected to aid the system-level reliability analysis, especially for the microgrid power systems.
