Design Issues of a Rotating to Linear Motion Magnetic Converter for Short-Distance Transport Applications
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: electromagnetic modeling, finite element analysis, linear motion, loss calculation, magnetic gears, permanent magnet machines
This paper discusses some design issues of a magnetic rotating to linear motion converter (RLMC), suitable for the propulsion system of a short-distance low-capacity vehicle. It basically operates like a magnetic rack, which executes the contactless conversion of the motor torque into a propulsion thrust, deriving from the interaction of on-board permanent magnet (PM) modules and stationary ferromagnetic steel pieces. A design procedure is set up that deals with both the PM module arrangement and the geometric shape of the steel pieces to optimize different performance aspects. A simplified modeling based on 2D transient finite element analyses is carried out to determine the thrust profile and the RLMC losses, which are essential to assess its practical feasibility. Finally, the characteristics as functions of the load angle and speed are determined to enable the prediction of the dynamic power exchange and then of the net energy demand useful to size the on-board source.

Simulation of Crop Yields Grown under Agro-Photovoltaic Panels: A Case Study in Chonnam Province, South Korea
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: AVP, crop model, DSSAT, GCSM, Simulation, yield
Agro-photovoltaic systems are of interest to the agricultural industry because they can produce both electricity and crops in the same farm field. In this study, we aimed to simulate staple crop yields under agro-photovoltaic panels (AVP) based on the calibration of crop models in the decision support system for agricultural technology (DSSAT) 4.6 package. We reproduced yield data of paddy rice, barley, and soybean grown in AVP experimental fields in Bosung and Naju, Chonnam Province, South Korea, using CERES-Rice, CERES-Barley, and CROPGRO-Soybean models. A geospatial crop simulation modeling (GCSM) system, developed using the crop models, was then applied to simulate the regional variations in crop yield according to solar radiation reduction scenarios. Simulated crop yields agreed with the corresponding measured crop yields with root mean squared errors of 0.29-ton ha−1 for paddy rice, 0.46-ton ha−1 for barley, and 0.31-ton ha−1 for soybean, showing no significant differences accord... Impact of a Synthetic Component on the Emission of Volatile Organic Compounds during the Combustion Process in a Miniature Turbine Engine
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combustion process, exhaust emissions, synthetic jet fuels, turbine engine, volatile organic compounds
This paper refers to the study of biofuel as an alternative power source for turbine aviation engines. Blends of Jet A-1 fuel and synthesized hydrocarbons from Hydrotreated Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) technology at different proportions, such as 25%, 50% and 75%, were used for tests. All the test results were compared with the neat Jet A-1 fuel. A miniature GTM series turbojet engine was used in the test rig studies. During the tests conducted at a specific rotational speed, selected engine operating parameters as well as the emission of volatile organic compounds were measured. In terms of engine performance, no significant differences were found between the test fuels. The results of volatile organic compound emissions indicate that among the most toxic compounds the highest concentrations were obtained for benzene. The addition of the HEFA synthetic component and increasing its proportion in the blend resulted in the obtained concentration values for benzene showing a decreasing t... [more]

Impact of Hydrogen Injection on Natural Gas Measurement
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: gas chromatograph, gas meter, Hydrogen, Natural Gas, thermal mass, ultrasonic
Hydrogen is increasingly receiving a primary role as an energy vector in ensuring the achievement of the European decarbonization goals by 2050. In fact, Hydrogen could be produced also by electrolysis of water using renewable sources, such as photovoltaic and wind power, being able to perform the energy storage function, as well as through injection into natural gas infrastructures. However, hydrogen injection directly impacts thermodynamic properties of the gas itself, such as density, calorific value, Wobbe index, sound speed, etc. Consequently, this practice leads to changes in metrological behavior, especially in terms of volume and gas quality measurements. In this paper, the authors present an overview on the impact of hydrogen injection in natural gas measurements. In particular, the changes in thermodynamic properties of the gas mixtures with different H2 contents have been evaluated and the effects on the accuracy of volume conversion at standard conditions have been investig... Biological Consequences of Marine Energy Development on Marine Animals
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: competition, crab, early life stage, food availability, injury, marine energy, predator susceptibility, receptor, reproductive success, seal
Marine energy devices harness power from attributes of ocean water to form a sustainable energy source. Knowledge gaps remain about whether marine energy systems can affect the environment, adding another threat to animal populations and habitats already under pressure from climate change and anthropogenic activities. To date, potential environmental effects have been studied under the scope of stressor−receptor interactions, where moving parts of, or emissions from, a system could harm the animals, habitats, and natural processes. While crucial for understanding effects and identifying knowledge gaps, this approach misses a holistic view of what animals may experience in the presence of marine energy systems. We look at six biological consequences and forces that drive the health of an animal population and the effects expected from marine energy development: success of early life stages; changes in competitive capabilities; growth and survival based on food availability; susceptibili... General 3D Analytical Method for Eddy-Current Coupling with Halbach Magnet Arrays Based on Magnetic Scalar Potential and H-Functions
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: analytical calculation, eddy-current coupling, Halbach magnet array
Rapid and accurate eddy-current calculation is necessary to analyze eddy-current couplings (ECCs). This paper presents a general 3D analytical method for calculating the magnetic field distributions, eddy currents, and torques of ECCs with different Halbach magnet arrays. By using Fourier decomposition, the magnetization components of Halbach magnet arrays are determined. Then, with a group of H-formulations in the conductor region and Laplacian equations with magnetic scalar potential in the others, analytical magnetic field distributions are predicted and verified by 3D finite element models. Based on Ohm’s law for moving conductors, eddy-current distributions and torques are obtained at different speeds. Finally, the Halbach magnet arrays with different segments are optimized to enhance the fundamental amplitude and reduce the harmonic contents of air-gap flux densities. The proposed method shows its correctness and validation in analyzing and optimizing ECCs with Halbach magnet arr... [more]

Slow Pyrolysis as a Method for Biochar Production from Carob Waste: Process Investigation and Products’ Characterization
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: biochar, carob waste, slow pyrolysis
The zero-waste city challenge of the modern society is inevitably addressed to the development of model’s waste-to-energy. In this work, carob waste, largely used in the agro-industrial sector for sugar extraction or locust beangum (LBG) production, is considered as feedstock for the slow pyrolysis process. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in 2012, the world production of carobs was ca. 160,000 tons, mainly concentrated in the Mediterranean area (Spain, Italy, Morocco, Portugal, and Greece). To evaluate the biomass composition, at first, the carob waste was subjected to thermo-gravimetric analysis. The high content of fixed carbon suggests that carobs are a plausible candidate for pyrolysis conversion to biochar particles. The thermal degradation of the carob waste proceeds by four different steps related to the water and volatile substances’ removal, degradation of hemicellulose, lignin and cellulose degradation, and lignin decomposition.... Surrogate Models Applied to Optimized Organic Rankine Cycles
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: economic, heat recovery, metamodel, Optimization, organic Rankine cycle, Surrogate Model, thermodynamic
Global optimization of industrial plant configurations using organic Rankine cycles (ORC) to recover heat is becoming attractive nowadays. This kind of optimization requires structural and parametric decisions to be made; the number of variables is usually high, and some of them generate disruptive responses. Surrogate models can be developed to replace the main components of the complex models reducing the computational requirements. This paper aims to create, evaluate, and compare surrogates built to replace a complex thermodynamic-economic code used to indicate the specific cost (US$/kWe) and efficiency of optimized ORCs. The ORCs are optimized under different heat sources conditions in respect to their operational state, configuration, working fluid and thermal fluid, aiming at a minimal specific cost. The costs of 1449.05, 1045.24, and 638.80 US$/kWe and energy efficiencies of 11.1%, 10.9%, and 10.4% were found for 100, 1000, and 50,000 kWt of heat transfer rate at average tempera... [more]

An Enhanced Control Strategy for Mitigation of State-Transition Oscillation Phenomena in Grid-Forming Self-Synchronized Converter System with Islanded Power System
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: grid-forming converter, self-synchronized converter, synchronverter
This paper proposes an enhanced control strategy for mitigating state-transition oscillations in active and reactive power responses of self-synchronized converter system to secure the islanded power system stability. The self-synchronized converter is well known for “grid-forming” that is able to operate to stand-alone mode (SAM) providing grid voltage and frequency without phase synchronization units. Although the grid-forming (GFM) is self-synchronized, the inherent synchronization principle causes system degradation in which should maintain a point of common coupling (PCC) voltage for critical loads as well as transitions from grid-connected mode (GCM) to SAM and vice versa. Therefore, this paper focuses on resolving the inherent oscillatory issues in GFM self-synchronized converter system (especially adopted ‘synchronverter’ principle), and proposes a control strategy for controllability improvement based on stability analysis for smooth state-transition under islanded power syste... A Characterization of European Collective Action Initiatives and Their Role as Enablers of Citizens’ Participation in the Energy Transition
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: citizen participation, community energy, energy communities, energy transition, green energy, social innovation
This paper provides novel additional evidence on the characteristics of Collective Action Initiatives (CAIs), investigating their role within the European energy sector. It analyses and presents results of a survey administered in six European countries: the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Poland, Estonia, and Spain. CAIs are studied in light of four key dimensions, those being their creation dynamics, the way they are organized, financed, and the activities they undertake. The results presented are also interpreted to reflect on their role as drivers of social innovation (SI) within energy transition in Europe. The analysis shows that the contribution of CAIs to the energy transition has a much wider scope than the development of energy projects and provision of energy services. CAIs are intrinsically socially innovative models of implementation as characterised by a strong level of citizen involvement and participation. Moreover, they have a potential multi-level role in the energy tran... [more]

A Detailed Testing Procedure of Numerical Differential Protection Relay for EHV Auto Transformer
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: current measurement, current transformers, power system protection, power transformers, relays, testing
In power systems, the programmable numerical differential relays are widely used for the protection of generators, bus bars, transformers, shunt reactors, and transmission lines. Retrofitting of relays is the need of the hour because lack of proper testing techniques and misunderstanding of vital procedures may result in under performance of the overall protection system. Lack of relay’s proper testing provokes an unpredictability in its behavior, that may prompt tripping of a healthy power system. Therefore, the main contribution of the paper is to prepare a step-by-step comprehensive procedural guideline for practical implementation of relay testing procedures and a detailed insight analysis of relay’s settings for the protection of an Extra High Voltage (EHV) auto transformer. The experimental results are scrutinized to document a detailed theoretical and technical analysis. Optimization of Sizing and Operation Strategy of Distributed Generation System Based on a Gas Turbine and Renewable Energy
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, distributed generation, gas turbine, operation strategy, Optimization, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, sizing
Optimization of the sizing and operation strategy of a complex energy system requires a large computational burden because of the non-linear nature of the mathematical problem. Accordingly, using a conventional numerical method with only a physics-based model for complete optimization is impractical. To resolve this problem, this paper adopted an optimization method of using an artificial intelligence scheme that combines an artificial neural network (ANN) and a genetic algorithm (GA). Especially, the ANN was constructed based on results from a physics-based model to obtain a large amount of accurate simulation data in a short time frame. A distributed generation (DG) system based on a gas turbine (GT) and renewable energy (RE) was simulated to demonstrate the usefulness of the optimization method. In consideration of the capacity and partial load performance of the GT, the optimization of the sizing and operation strategy of the DG system was performed for three system design scenario... Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: low-permeability reservoir, moving boundary, nonlinear equation, starting pressure gradient, steady-state sequential replacement method
At present, there are two main methods for solving oil and gas seepage equations: analytical and numerical methods. In most cases, it is difficult to find the analytical solution, and the numerical solution process is complex with limited accuracy. Based on the mass conservation equation and the steady-state sequential substitution method, the moving boundary nonlinear equations of radial flow under different outer boundary conditions are derived. The quasi-Newton method is used to solve the nonlinear equations. The solutions of the nonlinear equations with an infinite outer boundary, constant pressure outer boundary and closed outer boundary are compared with the analytical solutions. The calculation results show that it is reliable to solve the oil-gas seepage equation with the moving boundary nonlinear equation. To deal with the difficulty in solving analytical solutions for low-permeability reservoirs and numerical solutions of moving boundaries, a quasi-linear model and a nonlinea... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: DEA methodology, environmental protection expenditures, EU environmental policy, relative efficiency
Environmental protection policy is a widely discussed issue in scientific works. However, special attention should be also paid to the effectiveness of expenditures on environmental protection, and this is the main goal of this paper. The countries of the European Union were selected for this analysis due to the fact that, in recent years, this region has become an informal world leader with respect to the implementation of policy measures in the field of environmental protection. For that reason, the data envelopment analysis methodology was used, which allows the calculation of input-output efficiency for the years 2005−2015. The analysis shows that, among the 30 analyzed countries, the most effective in environmental protection actions is Finland. The hypothesis that higher environmental protection expenditures does not result in better environmental results has been confirmed. Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: food industry, high-energy consumer goods, sustainable development, sustainable marketing mix
The research examined awareness, prospects and constraints of sustainable marketing mix development (SMD) from the perspective of Poland’s high-energy consumer goods (HECG), i.e., confectionery products, as an example of the Polish food industry. A questionnaire survey was designed for this purpose. The purpose of the survey questions was to evaluate selected areas of SMD; thus, a reference value ratio was proposed. An original approach to pairwise comparisons technique was applied to rank the value of each survey to provide an intensity measure for each examined area, i.e., a non-heuristic approach with verifiable accuracy and reliability. It was found that a high level of awareness among respondents exists in relation to SMD. Considering all aspects of constraints intensity for SMD, it could be concluded that SMD for Poland’s HECG is at a quite high level. However, considering all aspects of prospects intensity for SMD, this evaluation supported the conclusion that its level for Pola... [more]
