IoT Solutions for Maintenance and Evaluation of Photovoltaic Systems
Jacek Kusznier, Wojciech Wojtkowski
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy conversion systems, energy management, energy research and development, IoT, operation of photovoltaic power systems, photovoltaic, renewable energy sources, sensors, solar energy
The effective operation of photovoltaic systems depends on many factors and parameters that must be continuously monitored. The factors listed in the article are frequently variable, which makes it very difficult to predict the amount of radiation that will reach photovoltaic panels and can be converted into electricity. Therefore, to optimize the operating point of a photovoltaic power plant, it is necessary to track the changes in these quantities. IoT systems may help in controlling and managing a power plant, storage, and energy flow to the power grid. The results recorded at the hybrid power plant of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Bialystok University of Technology are useful for a comprehensive analysis of the operation of the plant and ways of its optimization. It is shown that implementation of a comprehensive maintenance system may deliver extensive important information regarding the PV plant installation.

Keywords: blow-by CFD simulation, blow-by model, optical engine characterization, optical engine simulation
Nowadays reducing green-house gas emissions and pushing the fossil fuel savings in the field of light-duty vehicles is compulsory to slow down climate change. To this aim, the use of new combustion modes and dilution strategies to increase the stability of operations rich in diluent is an effective technique to reduce combustion temperatures and heat losses in throttled operations. Since the combustion behavior in those solutions highly differs from that of typical market systems, fundamental analyses in optical engines are mandatory in order to gain a deep understanding of those and to tune new models for improving the mutual support between experiments and simulations. However, it is known that optical accessible engines suffer from significant blow-by collateral flow due to the installation of the optical measure line. Thus, a reliable custom blow-by model capable of being integrated with both mono-dimensional and three-dimensional simulations was developed and validated against exp... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: agricultural buildings, broiler house, building location, energy management, heat transfer
This paper addresses the impact of location on energy management and ground heat transfer in a commercial large-scale broiler house. Four locations in Europe were selected for analysis: Krakow (Poland), Vienna (Austria), Modena (Italy), and Oslo (Norway). An analysis of the impact of location on energy management was performed using the numerical method of computing elemental balances (MEB). WUFIplus® computer software was used to assist in the calculation process. Computer simulations of the effects of location on selected technical factors were performed after validating the computational model. The complex area of building and land was divided into cuboidal balance−difference elements using model discretization. Energy and temperature balance calculations were performed for each balance−difference element assuming a time step every 60 min. Validation of the computational model was performed based on the measured temperature inside and outside the broiler house. The variation in outd... [more]
Thermal Analysis of Herringbone Gears Based on Thermal Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication Considering Surface Roughness
Xiaozhou Hu, Jie Chen, Minggui Wu, Jianing Wang
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: friction coefficient, surface roughness, TEHL, temperature distribution
To predict the temperature distribution of the tooth surface of a herringbone gear pair, a numerical method for the determination of frictional heat generation was proposed by establishing a thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication (TEHL) model in the meshing zone taking surface roughness into account. According to the real micro topography of the tooth surface measured by a non-contact optical system and loaded tooth contact analysis, the friction coefficient was obtained by a TEHL analysis and then the heat generation in the contact zone was determined. With the combination of heat generation and heat dissipation analysis, the single tooth model of the herringbone gear pair due to the finite element method (FEM) was proposed and the steady-state temperature distribution of the tooth surfaces was predicted by FEM simulations. The simulation and the experimental results demonstrated good agreement, which verified the feasibility of the present numerical method.

Patrizia Ghisellini, Amos Ncube, Gianni D’Ambrosio, Renato Passaro, Sergio Ulgiati
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: agri-food by-products, circular economy, construction and demolition waste, energy savings, recycled aggregates
In this study, our aim was to explore the potential energy savings obtainable from the recycling of 1 tonne of Construction and Demolition Waste (C&DW) generated in the Metropolitan City of Naples. The main fraction composing the functional unit are mixed C&DW, soil and stones, concrete, iron, steel and aluminium. The results evidence that the recycling option for the C&DW is better than landfilling as well as that the production of recycled aggregates is environmentally sustainable since the induced energy and environmental impacts are lower than the avoided energy and environmental impacts in the life cycle of recycled aggregates. This LCA study shows that the transition to the Circular Economy offers many opportunities for improving the energy and environmental performances of the construction sector in the life cycle of construction materials by means of internal recycling strategies (recycling C&DW into recycled aggregates, recycled steel, iron and aluminum) as well as external re... Experimental Investigation of the Heat Transfer and Pressure Drop inside Tubes and the Shell of a Minichannel Shell and Tube Type Heat Exchanger
Mateusz Prończuk, Anna Krzanowska
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: convective heat transfer, friction factor, minichannel, Nusselt number, pressure drop, shell and tube heat exchanger
This paper presents an experimental study on a shell and tube mini heat exchanger (STMHE). The STMHE consisted of seven tubes in a triangular arrangement, with an 0.8 mm inner diameter and 1.0 mm outer diameter. The heat exchanger shell had an inner diameter of 11 mm, and the heat exchanger had no baffles. For the adopted operating conditions, the Reynolds number on the tube side varied in the range of 300−3000, and 2000−12,000 on the shell side. The aim of this study was to determine pressure drop values during fluid flow and Nusselt number correlations for the heat transfer. A new method based on optimisation was used to derive the equations for calculating the heat transfer coefficients. It allowed the determine of the correlation equations for the heat transfer coefficients simultaneously for both sides of the heat exchanger. The obtained correlations yielded overall heat transfer coefficient values that, in most cases, did not differ by more than ±10% from those determined experim... [more]

Krzysztof Grysa, Artur Maciąg, Artur Ściana
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: heat exchanger, heat transfer, recuperator, Trefftz method
The paper discusses two mathematical models for the air flow through a plate heat exchanger with parallel plates. The first exhausts the used air and then supplies the fresh air. The second exhausts the used air above the plate and simultaneously supplies fresh air under it (counter-flow exchanger). In both cases, the exhaust air heat is used to heat the supply air. The purpose of the research is to verify which exchanger uses the exhaust air heat more efficiently. The method of the Trefftz function was used to determine approximate solutions of the analysed problems. The results obtained for 1.2 mm thick steel, aluminium, and copper plates and for external winter, summer, and spring−autumn temperatures are discussed. The results indicate that steel is the best material for a plate heat exchanger, and the counter-flow exchanger is more efficient of the two. Thanks to the use of thin steel plates and the reduction of the air exchange time to a few minutes, cheap and efficient counter-fl... [more]

Sara Rahimifard, Saeid Habibi, Gillian Goward, Jimi Tjong
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adaptive smooth variable structure filter, battery management system, electric vehicle, lithium-ion battery, state of charge, state of health
Battery Management Systems (BMSs) are used to manage the utilization of batteries and their operation in Electric and Hybrid Vehicles. It is imperative for efficient and safe operation of batteries to be able to accurately estimate the State of Charge (SoC), State of Health (SoH) and State of Power (SoP). The SoC and SoH estimation must remain robust and accurate despite aging and in presence of noise, uncertainties and sensor biases. This paper introduces a robust adaptive filter referred to as the Adaptive Smooth Variable Structure Filter with a time-varying Boundary Layer (ASVSF-VBL) for the estimation of the SoC and SoH in electrified vehicles. The internal model of the filter is a third-order equivalent circuit model (ECM) and its state vector is augmented to enable estimation of the internal resistance and current bias. It is shown that system and measurement noise covariance adaptation for the SVSF-VBL approach improves the performance in state estimation of a battery. The estim... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: binary particle swarm optimization, Demand Side Management, home energy management system, real-time pricing
In this paper, we proposed a home energy management system (HEMS) that includes photovoltaic (PV), electric vehicle (EV), and energy storage systems (ESS). The proposed HEMS fully utilizes the PV power in operating domestic appliances and charging EV/ESS. The surplus power is fed back to the grid to achieve economic benefits. A novel charging and discharging scheme of EV/ESS is presented to minimize the energy cost, control the maximum load demand, increase the battery life, and satisfy the user’s-traveling needs. The EV/ESS charges during low pricing periods and discharges in high pricing periods. In the proposed method, a multi-objective problem is formulated, which simultaneously minimizes the energy cost, peak to average ratio (PAR), and customer dissatisfaction. The multi-objective optimization is solved using binary particle swarm optimization (BPSO). The results clearly show that it minimizes the operating cost from 402.89 cents to 191.46 cents, so that a reduction of 52.47% is... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: dynamic load, elastic modulus, limestone, mechanical properties, rock
The paper presents the results of the experimental investigation of carbonate reservoir rocks subjected to quasistatic and nonlinear dynamic loads. During the quasistatic loading the zones of linear elasticity were determined. Dynamic loading of samples was performed at several frequencies and load amplitudes using a testing system. There were two zones found in which the elastic modulus changes nonlinearly in terms of dynamic load frequency. While the frequency of the dynamic load increases from 0 to 10 Hz the dynamic elastic modulus rises according to logarithmic law; while the frequency increases from 10 to 60 Hz elastic modulus rises according to a power law for each load amplitude. The amplitude of the longitudinal strain and phase shift decreases with increasing frequency of the dynamic load. Under the higher strain rates the rock gets stiffer in comparison with rock subjected to smaller strain rate dynamic loading. Saturation of rock samples with distilled water flattening the d... March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: behavioral change, carbon footprint, climate protection, climate-friendly schools, CO2-balance, Energy Efficiency, Fridays for Future, GHG-calculator, schools, self-efficacy
Schools play an important role in achieving climate protection goals, because they lay the foundation of knowledge for a responsible next generation. Therefore, schools as institutions have a special role model function. Enabling schools to become aware of their own carbon footprint (CF) is an important prerequisite for being able to tap the substantial CO2 reduction potential. Aiming at the direct involvement of students in the assessment process, a new assessment tool was developed within the Schools4Future project that gives students the opportunity to determine their own school’s CF. With this instrument the CO2 emissions caused by mobility, heating and electricity consumption as well as for food in the school canteen and for consumables (paper) can be recorded. It also takes into account existing renewable energy sources. Through the development of the tool, not only a monitoring instrument was established but also a concrete starting point from which students could take actions t... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: engine output, harmful exhaust gas, inflow of outside air, intake manifold, nozzle, vortexes
In the present study, a nozzle was used to improve the flow performance of an intake manifold, and its effects on the automobile engine output and the exhaust gas were experimentally studied. It was found that the engine output of a vehicle with a mileage of 30,000 km increased by 4.7% and 6.5% when nozzles with diameters of 5 and 2.5 mm were used. In addition, the engine output of a vehicle with a mileage of 180,000 km increased by 3.3% and 13.3% when nozzles with diameters of 5 and 2.5 mm were used compared to those of the same vehicle when no nozzle was used. Thus, using a nozzle for the inflow of outside air created a uniform combustion environment to improve the engine output and reduce harmful exhaust gases, such as hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides, by generating vortexes inside the intake manifold and increasing the degree of mixing. Furthermore, the smaller nozzle with a diameter of 2.5 mm had greater effects.

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy management, PV data analytics and diagnostics, PV predictive maintenance, smart PV monitoring solutions, software-as-a-service (SaaS), solar energy
In photovoltaic power plants, fault diagnosis tools are essential for ensuring a high energy yield. These tools should be capable of accurately identifying and quantifying the factors behind the various fault mechanisms commonly found in photovoltaic plants. Considering the aforementioned factors, this article proposes an online smart PV monitoring solution, which is capable of detecting malfunctions that arise from accidental and/or technical causes through the analysis of I-V curves, however, without the necessity to interrupt the operation of the system, thus reducing the maintenance cost. Accidental causes can lead to the reduction of energy productivity due to the excessive accumulation of dirt on the photovoltaic modules, partial shading and eventual errors that occur during its installation. On the other hand, technical causes can be attributed to faults found on the photovoltaic modules, which lead to gradual losses in their electric and material characteristics. Therefore, by... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bond graph, floating bearing bushings, gear pump, in-field tests, lab tests, loss coefficients
This article presents the modeling, simulation and experimental validation of the movement of the floating bearing bushing in an external gear pump. As a starting point, a complete pump parameterization was carried out through standard tests, and these parameters were used in a first bond graph model in order to simulate the gear pump behavior. This model was experimentally validated under working conditions in field tests. Then, a sophisticated bond graph model of the movement of the floating bushing was developed from the equations that define its lubrication. Finally, as a result, both models were merged by integrating the dynamics of the floating bushing bearing with the variation of the characteristic parameters (loss coefficients). Finally, the final model was experimentally validated both in laboratory and field tests by assembling the pump in a drilling machine to drive the auxiliary movements. The novelty of this article is the conception and construction of a simple and exper... [more]

Constant Voltage Model of DFIG-Based Variable Speed Wind Turbine for Load Flow Analysis
Rudy Gianto
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DFIG, electric power system, load flow analysis, steady state model, wind power plant
At present, the penetration of wind-driven electric generators or wind power plants (WPPs) in electric power systems is getting more and more extensive. To evaluate the steady state performances of such power systems, developing a valid WPP model is therefore necessary. This paper proposes a new method in modeling the most popular type of WPP, i.e., DFIG (doubly fed induction generator)-based WPP, to be used in power system steady state load flow analysis. The proposed model is simple and derived based on the formulas that calculate turbine mechanical power and DFIG power. The main contribution of the paper is that, in contrast to the previous models where the DFIG power factor has been assumed to be constant at unity, the constant voltage model proposed in this paper allows the power factor to vary in order to keep the voltage at the desired value. Another important contribution is that the proposed model can be implemented in both sub-synchronous and super-synchronous conditions (it... [more]
Design Centering of Compact Microwave Components Using Response Features and Trust Regions
Anna Pietrenko-Dabrowska, Slawomir Koziel
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: design centering, microwave components, response features, robust design, yield optimization
Fabrication tolerances, as well as uncertainties of other kinds, e.g., concerning material parameters or operating conditions, are detrimental to the performance of microwave circuits. Mitigating their impact requires accounting for possible parameter deviations already at the design stage. This involves optimization of appropriately defined statistical figures of merit such as yield. Although important, robust (or tolerance-aware) design is an intricate endeavor because manufacturing inaccuracies are normally described using probability distributions, and their quantification has to be based on statistical analysis. The major bottleneck here is high computational cost: for reliability reasons, miniaturized microwave components are evaluated using full-wave electromagnetic (EM) models, whereas conventionally utilized analysis methods (e.g., Monte Carlo simulation) are associated with massive circuit evaluations. A practical approach that allows for circumventing the aforementioned obst... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: firecrackers, mathematical model, pyrotechnic compositions
This paper presents research on the development of pyrotechnic compositions producing an acoustic effect. These types of compositions are used in firecrackers to imitate a cannon shot—they are most frequently used during military exercises. The research was based on a mathematical model of an experiment. For environmental reasons, the replacement of the harmful oxidant Ba(NO3)2 by KClO4 and NH4ClO4 was modelled. The compositions were tested for reliability and evaluated in terms of friction sensitivity and burning rate. This allowed for the verification of the effectiveness of the modelling carried out. Optimum compositions were selected for further research.

Keywords: centrifugal compressor, Eckardt’s compressors, empirical loss correlations, performance prediction
This work investigates loss model sets based on empirical loss correlations for subsonic centrifugal compressors. These loss models in combination with off-design performance prediction algorithms make up an essential tool in predicting off-design behaviour of turbomachines. This is important since turbomachines rarely work under design conditions. This study employs an off-design performance prediction algorithm based on an iterative process from Galvas. Modelling of ten different loss mechanisms and physical phenomena is involved in this approach and is thoroughly described in this work. Geometries of two subsonic compressors were reconstructed and used in the evaluation of individual loss correlations in order to obtain a suitable loss model. Results of these variations are compared to experimental data. In addition, 4608 loss model sets were created by taking all possible combinations of individual loss estimations from which three promising candidates were selected for further inv... [more]

Keywords: electrolyser, Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) simulation, Energy Storage, High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) link, large scale offshore network, power-to-gas
Due to their weak nature, such as low inertia, offshore energy hubs are prone to unprecedented fast dynamic phenomena. This can lead to undesired instability problems. Recent literature, with main focus on onshore systems, suggests that electrolysers could be an attractive option to support wind generators in the mitigation of balancing problems. This paper presents an Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) model for real-time simulation based study of the dynamics of active power and voltage responses of offshore hubs due to wind speed fluctuations. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the ability of an electrolyser to support an offshore energy hub under different scenarios and with different locations of the electrolyser. Two locations of Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolysers were considered: centralised (at the AC common bus of the hub) or distributed (at the DC link of the wind turbines). Numerical simulations conducted in RSCAD® on a 2 GW offshore hub with 4 × 500 MW wind p... [more]
