Application of CFD to the Design of Manifolds Employed in the Thermodynamic Method to Obtain Efficiency in a Hydraulic Turbine
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, Gibson method, hydraulic efficiency, manifolds, thermodynamic method, turbine
This study presents the design and implementation of different types of manifolds (sampling system) to measure water flow properties (velocity, pressure, and temperature) through the high- and low-pressure section of a Francis-type low head hydraulic turbine (LHT of 52 m) to calculate it is efficiency using the Thermodynamic Method (TM). The design of the proposed manifolds meets the criteria established in the “International Electrotechnical Commission—60041” Standard for the application of the TM in the turbine. The design of manifolds was coupled to the turbine and tested by the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) application, under the same experimental conditions that were carried out in a power plant, without the need for on-site measurements. CFD analyses were performed at different operating conditions of volumetric flow (between values of 89.67 m3/s and 35.68 m3/s) at the inlet of turbine. The mechanical power obtained and the efficiency calculated from the numerical simulation... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: big data analysis, fracturing construction parameters, horizontal well, shale gas
With the rapid development of computer science and technology, the Chinese petroleum industry has ushered in the era of big data. In this study, by collecting fracturing data from 303 horizontal wells in the Fuling Shale Gas Demonstration Area in China, a series of big data analysis studies was conducted using Pearson’s correlation coefficient, the unweighted pair group with arithmetic means method, and the graphical plate method to determine which is best. The fracturing parameters were determined through a series of big data analysis studies. The big data analysis process is divided into three main steps. The first is data preprocessing to screen out eligible, high-yielding wells. The second is a fracturing parameter correlation clustering analysis to determine the reasonableness of the parameters. The third is a big data panel method analysis of specific fracturing construction parameters to determine the optimal parameter range. The analyses revealed that the current amount of 100... [more]

The Condition of Photovoltaic Modules under Random Operation Parameters
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: inefficiency, Modelling, photovoltaic cell, randomness, residual method
The paper presents an original method underlying an efficient tool for assessing the condition of photovoltaic (PV) modules, in particular, those made of amorphous cells. Significantly random changes in operational parameters characterize amorphous cell operation and cause them to be challenging to test, especially in working conditions. To develop the method, the authors modified the residual method with incorporated histograms. The proposed method has been verified through experiments that show the usefulness of the proposed approach. It significantly minimizes the risk of false diagnostic information in assessing the condition of photovoltaic modules. Based on the proposed methods, the inference results confirm the effectiveness of the concept for evaluating the degree of failure of the photovoltaic module described in the paper.

Effect of Climate Change and Occupant Behaviour on the Environmental Impact of the Heating and Cooling Systems of a Real Apartment. A Parametric Study through Life Cycle Assessment
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: climate change, environmental impact, global warming potential (GWP) indicator, heating and cooling systems, life cycle assessment (LCA), occupant behaviour, ReCiPe indicator
Climate change has a strong influence on the energy consumption of buildings, affecting both the heating and cooling demand in the actual and future scenario. In this paper, a life cycle assessment (LCA) was performed to evaluate the influence of both the occupant behaviour and the climate change on the environmental impact of the heating and cooling systems of an apartment located in southern Italy. The analysis was conducted using IPCC GWP and ReCiPe indicators as well as the Ecoinvent database. The influence of occupant behaviour was included in the analysis considering different usage profiles during the operational phase, while the effect of climate change was considered by varying the weather file every thirty years. The adoption of the real usage profiles showed that the impact of the systems was highly influenced by the occupant behaviour. In particular, the environmental impact of the heating system appeared more influenced by the operation hours, while that of the cooling sys... [more]

Induction Heating for Variably Sized Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Materials through Load Modulation
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: induction heating, load flexible modulation, non-ferromagnetic materials, series resonant inverter
Induction heating (IH) is a process of heating the electrically conducting materials especially ferromagnetic materials with the help of electromagnetic induction through generating heat in an object by eddy currents. A well-entrenched way of IH is to design a heating system pertaining to the usage of ferromagnetic materials such as stainless steel, iron, etc., which restricts the end user’s choice of using utensils made of ferromagnetic only. This research article proposes a new scheme of induction heating that is equally effective for heating ferromagnetic and non-ferromagnetic materials such as aluminium and copper. This is achieved by having a competent IH system that embodies a series resonant inverter and controller where a competent flexible load modulation (FLM) is deployed. FLM facilitates change in operating frequency in accordance with the type of material chosen for heating. The recent attempts by researchers on all metal IH have not addressed much on the variable shapes an... [more]

Electrostatic Zipping Actuators—Analysis of the Pull-In Effect Depending on the Geometry Parameters
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: artificial muscle, electrostatic zipping actuator, FEM, MEMS, pull-in effect
Continuous work on a new generation of actuators, referred to as artificial muscles, resulted in the initiation of work on electrostatic zipping actuators, the concept of which is derived from micro electro-mechanical devices. Despite partial knowledge of their basic operating parameters, a question remains whether electrostatic zipping actuators are able to meet the expectations in the context of generated forces and control possibilities. In order to get closer to the answer to this question, the authors of this work created a solution method using FEM, which allowed them to conduct a series of concentric contraction tests of the desired solution. In addition to the basic features of the actuators tested, such as their length, thickness and width, for the first time the size of the weld surface, to which the loading force was applied, was taken into account. The results of the investigations show the possibility of adjusting the supply voltage range to the application requirements, b... [more]

Influence of Uneven Secondary Air Supply and Burner Tilt on Flow Pattern, Heat Transfer, and NOx Emissions in a 500 MWe Tangential-Firing Coal Boiler
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: burner tilt, coal combustion, NOx emission, secondary air, tangential-firing
Tangential-firing boilers develop large swirling fireballs by using pulverized coal and air from the corners of the burner zone. During operation, however, the boiler may experience an uneven air supply between corners; this deforms the fireball, raising various issues concerning performance and structural safety. This study investigated the characteristic boiler performance and the role of burner tilting in a 500 MWe boiler with secondary air (SA) in two corners that are up to 1.9 times larger than those in the other corners. Computational fluid dynamics simulations with advanced coal combustion sub-models were employed with the following two sets of cases: (i) six cases of actual operation to validate the modeling and (ii) sixteen cases for the parametric study of SA flow ratio and burner tilt between −15° and +26°. The results showed that the uneven SA supply deteriorated the boiler performance in various aspects and the burner tilt can be used to alleviate its impact. With a larger... [more]

Forecast of the Impact of Electric Car Battery Performance and Infrastructural and Demographic Changes on Cumulative Accessibility for the Five Most Populous Cities in Poland
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cities, cumulative accessibility, electric vehicles, Poland, range, technological change
The purpose of this study is to compare (1) technological factors (the ranges offered by the batteries of three popular electric vehicles in Poland); (2) infrastructure improvements; and (3) demographic changes and their impact on accessibility in the context of the ranges of labor markets within the 30, 60, and 90 min isochrones in moderate driving mode for the five largest cities in Poland using cumulative accessibility. We conclude that technological developments result in a much greater improvement in accessibility than demographic and infrastructural change. This is already visible with the 30 to 60 min isochrones, in particular when using the BMW in Cracow (with a more than 36% improvement in accessibility). Even greater changes, reaching as much as over 90%, are observed for the 60−90 min isochrones. The analysis shows that the shift in electromobility may be constrained by parallel demographic processes, dispersion of population in suburban areas, and the development of road in... [more]

Graph Modeling for Efficient Retrieval of Power Network Model Change History
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: graph database, history, smart grids
Power grids are constantly evolving, and data changes are increasing. Operational technology (OT) is controlled by IT technologies in smart grids, where changes in the physical world impose changes in the software data model, as well as the continuous generation of data points, resulting in time series datasets. The increased need for processing large amounts of data combined with requirements to maintain and increase overall performances has created a significant challenge for traditional database solutions and relational database models. The main idea of this paper was to find and propose a graph model that will allow the retrieval of historical connectivity in a reduced time complexity. Furthermore, the research question was addressed by evaluating three different approaches where the results provide a foundation for the proposed design guidelines related to optimizing graph-based databases for a modern smart grid system. The results of the experiments demonstrated reduced time comp... [more]

Design of Clean Steel Production with Hydrogen: Impact of Electricity System Composition
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: decarbonization, electrification of industry, hydrogen storage, modelling and optimization, renewable energy sources (RESs), steel industry
In Europe, electrification is considered a key option to obtain a cleaner production of steel at the same time as the electricity system production portfolio is expected to consist of an increasing share of varying renewable electricity (VRE) generation, mainly in the form of solar PV and wind power. We investigate cost-efficient designs of hydrogen-based steelmaking in electricity systems dominated by VRE. We develop and apply a linear cost-minimization model with an hourly time resolution, which determines cost-optimal operation and sizing of the units in hydrogen-based steelmaking including an electrolyser, direct reduction shaft, electric arc furnace, as well as storage for hydrogen and hot-briquetted iron pellets. We show that the electricity price following steelmaking leads to savings in running costs but to increased capital cost due to investments in the overcapacity of steel production units and storage units for hydrogen and hot-briquetted iron pellets. For two VRE-dominated... [more]

Analysis of Stationary- and Synchronous-Reference Frames for Three-Phase Three-Wire Grid-Connected Converter AC Current Regulators
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: coordinated reference frame, current control, grid-connected converter, three-phase converter, unbalance
The current state of the art shows that unbalance and distortion on the voltage waveforms at the terminals of a grid-connected inverter disturb its output currents. This paper compares AC linear current regulators for three-phase three-wire voltage source converters with three different reference frames, namely: (1) natural (abc), (2) orthogonal stationary (αβ), and (3) orthogonal synchronous (dq). The quantitative comparison analysis is based on mathematical models of grid disturbances using the impedance-based analysis, the computational effort assessment, as well as the steady-state and transient performance evaluation based on experimental results. The control scheme devised in the dq-frame has the highest computational effort and inferior performance under negative-sequence voltage disturbances, whereas it shows superior performance under positive-sequence voltages among the reference frames evaluated. In contrast, the stationary natural frame abc has the lowest computational effo... [more]

PV-Supercapacitor Cascaded Topology for Primary Frequency Responses and Dynamic Inertia Emulation
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: artificial inertia, dynamic inertia emulation, frequency response services, PV-SC series cascaded topology, RoCoF, three-point linearization technique
Owing to rapid increase in PV penetration without inherent inertia, there has been an unremitting deterioration of the effective inertia of the existing power systems. This may pose a serious threat to the stability of power systems during disturbances if not taken care of. Hence, the problem of how to emulate Synthetic Inertia (SI) in PV Systems (PVS) to retain their frequency stability demands attention. Super Capacitor (SC)-based storage become an attractive option over the other energy storage types because of its high-power density, burst power handling capability, faster response and longer life cycle. Considering this, the authors here propose a novel PV-SC Cascaded Topology (PSCT) as a cost-effective approach to emulate SI by integrating a low voltage SC to a high voltage grid-connected PVS. The proposed PSCT helps in operating the SC as a voltage source rather than a current source. Thus, it eliminates the high gain requirements of the SC interfacing converters. The aim is to... [more]

Impact of Agriculture and Energy on CO2 Emissions in Zambia
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: agriculture, ARDL bounds test, carbon emissions, Energy, Zambia
The world has experienced increased impacts of anthropogenic global warming due to increased emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs), which include carbon dioxide (CO2). Anthropogenic activities that contribute to CO2 emissions include deforestation, usage of fertilizers, and activities related to mining and energy production. The main objective of this paper was to assess the impacts of agriculture and energy production on CO2 emissions in Zambia. This research used econometric analysis, specifically the Autoregressive-Distributed Lag (ARDL) Bounds Test, to analyze the relationship between CO2 emissions and GDP, electricity consumption, agricultural production, and industry value added. The results showed the presence of cointegration, where the variables of CO2 emissions, GDP, electricity, and agriculture converge to a long-run equilibrium at the rate of 74%. Further, there was a short-run causality towards CO2 emissions running from agriculture and the consumption of energy as indicate... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ANOVA, battery, capacity, electric buses, heater, mobility, transportation
This paper focuses on the statistical evaluation of various operating characteristics of electric buses. The data obtained for statistical evaluation come from practice. In this paper, we focus on electricity consumption—an important aspect of electric bus operation. The ambient temperature significantly affects electricity consumption. In this paper, we use applied mathematics—correlation analysis, we accurately identify the effect of temperature on the consumption of the electric bus. Our next goal was to define the relationship between the loss of energy from the battery and driving power. We used regression analysis to describe this relation. Our article also includes an example of the practical use of ANOVA analysis in identifying a statistically significant effect of a particular vehicle on average consumption. We also show results from previous research and compare two different types of electric buses in operation.

Optimization Algorithm of Effective Stress Coefficient for Permeability
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: effective stress coefficient, rock permeability, sandstone, surface fitting
The effective stress coefficient for permeability is a significant index for characterizing the variation in permeability with effective stress. The realization of its accuracy is essential for studying the stress sensitivity of oil and gas reservoirs. The determination of the effective stress coefficient for permeability can be mainly evaluated using the cross-plotting or response surface method. Both methods preprocess experimental data and preset a specific function relation, resulting in deviation in the calculation results. To improve the calculation accuracy of the effective stress coefficient for permeability, a 3D surface fitting calculation method was proposed according to the linear effective stress law and continuity hypothesis. The statistical parameters of the aforementioned three methods were compared, and the results showed that the three-dimensional (3D) surface fitting method had the advantages of a high correlation coefficient, low root mean square error, and low resi... Cascade Control of the Ground Station Module of an Airborne Wind Energy System
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: airborne wind energy system (AWES), cascade control, discrete time Kalman filter (DKF), field oriented control (FOC), induction machine control, sliding mode control (SMC)
An airborne wind energy system (AWES) can harvest stronger wind streams at higher altitudes which are not accessible to conventional wind turbines. The operation of AWES requires a controller for the tethered aircraft/kite module (KM), as well as a controller for the ground station module (GSM). The literature regarding the control of AWES mostly focuses on the trajectory tracking of the KM. However, an advanced control of the GSM is also key to the successful operation of an AWES. In this paper we propose a cascaded control strategy for the GSM of an AWES during the traction or power generation phase. The GSM comprises a winch and a three-phase induction machine (IM), which acts as a generator. In the outer control-loop, an integral sliding mode control (SMC) algorithm is designed to keep the winch velocity at the prescribed level. A detailed stability analysis is also presented for the existence of the SMC for the perturbed winch system. The rotor flux-based field oriented control (R... [more]

A Comparative Feasibility Study of the Use of Hydrogen Produced from Surplus Wind Power for a Gas Turbine Combined Cycle Power Plant
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: economics, gas turbine combined cycle, Hydrogen, power to gas, surplus wind power
Because of the increasing challenges raised by climate change, power generation from renewable energy sources is steadily increasing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, especially CO2. However, this has escalated concerns about the instability of the power grid and surplus power generated because of the intermittent power output of renewable energy. To resolve these issues, this study investigates two technical options that integrate a power-to-gas (PtG) process using surplus wind power and the gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC). In the first option, hydrogen produced using a power-to-hydrogen (PtH) process is directly used as fuel for the GTCC. In the second, hydrogen from the PtH process is converted into synthetic natural gas by capturing carbon dioxide from the GTCC exhaust, which is used as fuel for the GTCC. An annual operational analysis of a 420-MW-class GTCC was conducted, which shows that the CO2 emissions of the GTCC-PtH and GTCC-PtM plants could be reduced by 95.5% and 89.7%... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electrochemical noise, flicker noise, fuel cell, reliability, state of health
We proposed applying low-frequency (flicker) noise in proton-exchange membrane fuel cells under selected loads to assess their state of health. The measurement set-up comprised a precise data acquisition board and was able to record the DC voltage and its random component at the output. The set-up estimated the voltage noise power spectral density at frequencies up to a few hundred mHz. We observed the evolution of the electrical parameters of selected cells of different qualities. We confirmed that flicker noise intensity varied the most (more than 10 times) and preceded changes in the impedance or a drop in the output DC voltage (less than 2 times). The data were observed for current loads (from 0.5 to 32 A) far from the permissible load. We deduce that the method can be utilised in industrial conditions to monitor the state of health of the selected cells by noise analysis. The method can be used in real-time when the flicker noise is measured within the range of a few Hz and requir... [more]

Flow Stability in a Miniature Centrifugal Pump under the Periodic Pulse Flow
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: energy gradient method, incoming periodic pulse flow, miniature centrifugal pump, transient flow stability
The flow behavior inside a miniature centrifugal pump, under a periodic pulse flow rate, was studied by means of numerical simulation. For a given incoming periodic pulse flow with a sine wave, the performance of the centrifugal pump was investigated in the section with increasing flow and the section with decreasing flow, and the special points of the flow rate and the periodic flow were identified. Further, the energy gradient method and the Q-criterion were adopted to analyze the internal vertical structure and flow stability. It was found that the regions with large variations in velocity and total pressure were mainly located at the leading edge of the suction surface and the middle area of the pressure surface of the blades. Irregular pressure fluctuation frequency under the periodic pulse flow was shown; this was mainly concentrated in the low-frequency zones close to the impeller’s rotational frequency. In addition, for the same flow rate in the periodic pulse flow, the pressur... [more]

Short and Long-Run Causal Effects of CO2 Emissions, Energy Use, GDP and Population Growth: Evidence from India Using the ARDL and VECM Approaches
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: ARDL bound test, CO2 emissions, energy use, GDP, India, population growth, variance decomposition
This paper investigates the nexus between CO2 emissions (CO2E), GDP, energy use (ENU), and population growth (PG) in India from 1980−2018 by comparing the “vector error correction” model (VECM) and “auto regressive distributed lag” (ARDL). We applied the unit root test, Johansen multi-variate cointegration, and performed a Variance decomposition analysis using the Cholesky approach. The VECM and ARDL-bound testing approaches to cointegration suggest a long-term equilibrium nexus between GDP, energy use, population growth and CO2E. The empirical outcomes show the existence of a long-term equilibrium nexus between the variables. The Granger causality results show that short-term bi-directional causality exists between GDP and ENU, while a uni-directional causality between CO2E and GDP, CO2E and ENU, CO2E and PG, and PG and ENU. Evidence from variance decomposition indicates that 58.4% of the future fluctuations in CO2E are due to changes in ENU, 2.8% of the future fluctuations are due to... [more]
