A Hyper-Integrated Mobility as a Service (MaaS) to Gamification and Carbon Market Enterprise Architecture Framework for Sustainable Environment
Alper Ozpinar
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: blockchain, carbon credit, enterprise architecture, environmental sustainability, gamification, hyper integrated services, MaaS, pro-environmental behaviour, smart cities
Various human activities emit greenhouse gasses (GHGs) that contribute to global climate change. These include the burning of fossil fuels for energy production, transportation, and industrial uses, and the clearing of forests to create farmland and pasture, all for urban and industrial development. As a result, temperatures around the world are rising, extreme weather events are occurring more frequently, and human health is suffering because of these changes. As a result of massive traffic, agriculture, and urbanization, the natural environment is being destroyed, negatively affecting humans and other living things. Humanity plans to live in smart cities within this ecosystem as the world evolves around these mutations. A smart city uses technology and data to improve the quality of life of its citizens and the efficiency of its urban systems. Smart cities have the potential to be more sustainable because they use technology and data to improve the efficiency of urban systems and red... [more]
Study on Nonlinear Dielectric Properties of Micro Silica
Yucui Xue, Wenmin Guo, Yunlong Sun, Zhonghua Li, Yongsen Han, Hongxu Jia
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: inorganic insulating powder, nonlinear electrical conductivity, nonlinear polarization, time-domain current spectrum
Inorganic insulating powder can potentially be used in nuclear power plant cables, fire-resistant cables, and so on due to its high heat resistance and radiation resistance. It is of great academic and engineering value to study the dielectric properties of inorganic insulating powder. In this paper, we aim to study the nonlinear dielectric properties via the measurement of the time-domain polarization current spectrum under the application of a DC electric field. Three kinds of silica powders are measured by a measurement system with adjustable pressure. The effects of powder shape, particle size, and packing pressure and temperature on the dependence of relaxation polarization and electrical conductivity on the applied electric field are studied. The experimental results show that the relationship between electrical conductivity and the electric field of inorganic insulating powder presents two different characteristics, i.e., field-induced enhancement and field-induced weakening. March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electric vehicle, microgrid, Model Predictive Control, park and ride, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
The urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to achieve a decarbonized society has led to the active introduction of electric vehicles worldwide. Renewable energy sources that do not emit greenhouse gases during charging must also be used. However, the uncertainty in the supply of renewable energy is an issue that needs to be considered in practical applications. Therefore, in this study, we predicted the amount of electricity generated by renewable energy using model predictive control, and we considered the operation of a complete island-operated park and ride EV parking station that does not depend on commercial electricity. To perform appropriate model predictive control, we performed comparative simulations for several different forecast interval cases. Based on the obtained results, we determined the forecast horizon and we simulated the economic impact of implementing EV demand response on the electricity demand side. We found that without demand response, large amounts of... [more]

Hyeonhong Jung, Seongjun Lee
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: capacity estimation, crossover, energy storage system (ESS), rebalancing, state of charge (SOC), vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB)
Extensive research has been conducted on energy storage systems (ESSs) for efficient power use to mitigate the problems of environmental pollution and resource depletion. Various batteries such as lead-acid batteries, lithium batteries, and vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs), which have longer life spans and better fire safety, have been actively researched. However, VRFBs undergo capacity reduction due to electrolyte crossover. Additionally, research on the capacity and state of charge (SOC) estimation for efficient energy management, safety, and life span management of VRFBs has been performed; however, the results of short-term experimental conditions with little change in capacity are presented without considering the rebalancing process of the electrolyte. Therefore, herein we propose a method for estimating the capacity of a VRFB using the cumulative charge and electrolyte volume amount under long-term cycle conditions, including rebalancing. The main point of the estimation m... [more]

Łukasz Kuźmiński, Zdzisław Kes, Veselin Draskovic, Andrzej Gawlik, Marcin Rabe, Katarzyna Widera, Agnieszka Łopatka, Maciej Śniegowski
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: budget variances cost energy consumption, budgetary control, extreme value theory, methods of budget variance analysis
Budgets in organisational units are considered to be traditional management support tools. On the other hand, budgetary control is the essence of control measures, allowing for the increase in the efficiency of an enterprise through appropriate allocation of resources. The methodology used in the analysis of budget variances (obtained as a result of applying budgetary control) undoubtedly influences the management efficiency of almost every organizational unit. The authors indicate a research gap of methodological and application nature in the area of risk measurement in the analysis of budget variances. Therefore, the aim of the article is to create universal and flexible models enabling probabilistic quantification of the risk of budget variance regardless of the nature of the cost, the person budgeting and the budgeting unit. Extreme value theory was used to develop the model. The results of the work are models allowing for the estimation of the limit level of deviation for assumed... [more]

Robert Kaniowski
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: boiling curves, heat transfer coefficient, inclined microchannel, pool boiling
Significant amounts of heat flow can be removed with small temperature differences by boiling. This process is used in a variety of industries, e.g., cooling electronics, digital circuits, power sources, etc. Heat dissipation from equipment that generates significant heat flows involves the movement of thermal energy through a wall into a cooling fluid. In the present study, this mechanism was analysed during the boiling of Novec-649 fluid at atmospheric pressure. The heat transfer surfaces were samples made of copper with milled, parallel grooves with a depth of 0.3 mm and a width ranging from 0.2 to 0.5 mm in 0.1 mm increments for straight channels and channels inclined with respect to the vertical by 30° and 60°, respectively. The study was carried out from the onset of nucleate boiling, approximately q = 7 kWm−2 with a heat flux increase until the critical heat flux was reached. The maximum heat flux was 262 kWm−2 and the heat transfer coefficient was 19.4 kWm−2K−1, achieved for su... [more]

March 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: backstepping sliding mode controller (BSMC), fuzzy logic, maximum power point tracking (MPPT), particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm, photovoltaic (PV) system
Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) through an effective control strategy increases the efficiency of solar panels under rapidly changing atmospheric conditions. Due to the nonlinearity of the I−V characteristics of the PV module, the Sliding Mode Controller (SMC) is considered one of the commonly used control approaches for MPPT in the literature. This paper proposed a Backstepping SMC (BSMC) method that ensures system stability using Lyapunov criteria. A fuzzy inference system replaces the saturation function, and a modified SMC is used for MPPT to ensure smooth behavior. The proposed Fuzzy BSMC (FBSMC) parameters are optimized using a Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) approach. The proposed controller is tested through various case studies on account of MPP’s dependence on temperature and solar radiation. The controller performance is assessed in partial shading conditions as well. The simulation results show that less settling time, a small error, and enhanced power extraction capa... [more]

March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dynamic security, isolated networks, NEPLAN, photovoltaic, Vietnam
Renewable electricity for off-grid areas is widely seen as one of the top choices in supporting local economic development in most countries, and so is Vietnam. Over the years, many isolated networks using renewable energy sources have been deployed for off-grid areas in Vietnam. However, the use of these energy sources in Vietnam’s isolated networks is still facing many challenges due to its infancy here. The issues of reliability and vulnerability of these networks are not given the expected attention. Another challenge is that the issues of the operational security of these systems could also be negatively affected by the variable nature of renewable sources, including static and dynamic security. For this reason, this study aims to contribute to a better understanding of integrating renewable energy into isolated networks, and in this case, using solar power for the An-Binh Island grid in Vietnam. The findings from this study suggest that choosing the right structure of the power m... [more]

Dominika Siwiec, Andrzej Pacana, Andrzej Gazda
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: circular economy, customers’ expectations, making decisions, mechanical engineering, product improvement, production engineering, QFD, quality function deployment, sustainable development
The idea of sustainable development (SD) forces companies to combine the quality development of products with the simultaneous care of the natural environment. These actions should start with the product design process. The aim of the study was to create a modified method of Quality Function Development (QFD-CE), which will support the design of new products or improve the existing products on the market. In the proposed method (QFD-CE), the method integrates techniques such as: SMARTER method, brainstorming (BM), the method of selecting a team of experts, kinship diagram, fixed sum scale, and Likert scale. A novelty compared to the traditional QFD methodology is that design goals are set not only based on customer expectations, but also considering the impact on the natural environment. The originality of this proposition comes to the practical inclusion of including sustainability development criteria. The proposed method can be used in companies that design new products and are focu... [more]

Yonglin Qin, Deyou Li, Hongjie Wang, Xianzhu Wei
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hump region, pump turbine, runner outlet, setting angle
Pump turbines play a quite important role of peak-valley shifting in the grid, and the hump margin is a critical criterion related to the safety and stability of operation in pump mode. Aiming at investigating the influence of runner outlet setting angle distribution on hump performance of a pump turbine, three runners with different linear distributions of setting angle at outlet were proposed, and the corresponding hump performance comparison was analyzed numerically through the SST k-ω turbulent model. The numerical result shows that, compared to the experiment, the relative errors of all simulated performances (energy characteristic, torque characteristic, and efficiency) were within 3%. Moreover, it was found that setting angle distribution modes could lead to a remarkably different performance in the hump region and, for the runner whose setting angle at shroud was 10° larger than that at hub, the hump safety margin could be increased from 4% to 4.5%. Thereafter, the correspondin... [more]
Assessment of the Safety of Transport of the Natural Gas−Ammonia Mixture
Andrzej Rusin, Katarzyna Stolecka-Antczak
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ammonia–methane mixture, fire, hazard, toxic
The decarbonisation of many sectors of the economy, including primarily the energy sector, results in the gradual elimination of hydrocarbon fuels, especially coal. During the transition period, it will be possible to use natural gas, the combustion of which is associated with lower carbon dioxide emissions. Further reduction in this emission is possible with the use of mixtures of natural gas with other gases, e.g., ammonia. Ammonia, widely used in many industries, has recently been described as the emission-free fuel of the future. However, both of these gases are hazardous substances. Natural gas is a flammable gas and ammonia is a toxic gas. This paper presents an assessment of the transport safety of natural gas (methane) and its mixture with ammonia. The uncontrolled release of these substances from a damaged gas pipeline may cause a fire or a toxic hazard. This work presents hazard zones arising in the event of such a failure and determines the impact of various mixture composit... [more]

Keywords: battery energy storage system, battery sizing algorithm, low voltage distribution network, solar PV penetration
This research investigated the increases of the voltage profile on the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA)’s low voltage (LV) network due to the solar photovoltaic (PV) penetration. This study proposed the solution to maintain the voltage profile within the PEA’s standard limitation by using battery energy storage system (BESS) application. The algorithm using bisection method to figure out the optimal size and location of BESS was examined and simulated in different scenarios such as summer/winter and weekend/weekday behaviors. Furthermore, the allocation of a battery in various locations was also considered. DIgSILENT power factory with DPL script and Python are the tools used to cover diverse scenario cases. The results showed that the best practice of how to implement BESS to solve the voltage rise problem was the BESS installation at the distribution transformer and the BESS installation separately at the end of each feeder near the loads. However, the optimal size of BESS inst... [more]

Liangzheng Wu, Yan Huang, Yimiao Gu
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: carbon market, China carbon price, long-run trend
China has adopted a gradualism principle in establishing its carbon emission trading system from the regional pilot markets to a national one. In view of the huge market potential and large differences across China, this paper applies the cointegration test and VECM (Vector Error Correction Model) to investigate the long-run trends and the price dynamics of regional pilot markets. The results show that the prices of the regional pilot markets form three long-run trends exhibit mean-reversion patterns. The launch of the national market marks the different performance of regional pilot markets. After the launch of the national market, the number of long-run trends reduces from three to one and the severity of the mean-reversion patterns is eased, indicating the efficiency improvement in China’s carbon market from a fragmented toward a unified market. The policy implication is that China should further develop its national market by incorporating the regional markets into the national one... [more]

March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electromechanical modes, low-frequency oscillation, meta-heuristic algorithms, power system stabilizer, smart damping controller
This study performed a comparative analysis of five new meta-heuristic algorithms specifically adopted based on two general classifications; namely, nature-inspired, which includes artificial eco-system optimization (AEO), African vulture optimization algorithm (AVOA), gorilla troop optimization (GTO), and non-nature-inspired or based on mathematical and physics concepts, which includes gradient-based optimization (GBO) and Runge Kutta optimization (RUN) for optimal tuning of multi-machine power system stabilizers (PSSs). To achieve this aim, the algorithms were applied in the PSS design for a multi-machine smart power system. The PSS design was formulated as an optimization problem, and the eigenvalue-based objective function was adopted to improve the damping of electromechanical modes. The expressed objective function helped to determine the stabilizer parameters and enhanced the dynamic performance of the multi-machine power system. The performance of the algorithms in the PSS’s de... [more]

Gang Liu, Mengqi Hao, Shishui Fan, Changjun Li
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: high-sulfur-content natural gas, pipeline, solution mechanism, sulfur deposition, thermodynamic model
The effect of gathering pipeline pressure, temperature, and key components on the solubility of monomeric sulfur in high-sulfur-content natural gas is directly related to the prediction and prevention of sulfur deposition in surface gathering pipelines. Based on our previous study on a prediction model of sulfur solubility in gas with a new formula for the binary interaction coefficient between sulfur and H2S, a new gas−solid thermodynamic phase equilibrium solubility prediction model for monomeric sulfur in high-sulfur-content natural gas was improved based on the gas−solid phase equilibrium principle considering both physical and chemical solution mechanisms. Two new expressions for binary interaction coefficients between sulfur and CO2 and CH4, considering both temperature and solvent density, are proposed in this new solubility prediction model. In this paper, the main factors, such as the gathering pipeline pressure, gathering pipeline temperature, H2S, and CO2, affecting the solu... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: Cronbach’s alpha, multifractal, N2 adsorption, pore structure, pore structure, shale
Nitrogen adsorption experiments have been extensively applied to shale pore structure research and evaluation. The pore structure can be quantitatively characterized in accordance with the nitrogen adsorption−desorption isotherm using various calculation models, whereas the results obtained using different models can more effectively indicate the pore characteristics of shale remains unclear. Further, there has not been any unified process in the optimization of calculation models for pore size distribution (PSD). In this study, the Barret−Joyner−Halenda adsorption (BJH-AD) and BJH desorption (BJH-DE) models were used with Longmaxi Formation shale as an example. Subsequently, the density functional theory (DFT) calculations were conducted on different shale lithofacies samples. Next, the pore structure parameters and heterogeneity obtained using different models were compared, and the consistency parameters of different models were obtained in accordance with Cronbach’s alpha. Integration of Stand-Alone Controlled Active Power Filters in Harmonic Power Flow of Radial Distribution Networks
Hamed Rezapour, MohamadAli Amini, Hamid Falaghi, António M. Lopes
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active power filter, electrical distribution network, harmonic pollution, stand-alone control system
Utilization of active power filters (APFs) is the most efficient method to reduce harmonic pollution in distribution networks. Previous approaches utilized APFs in integrated control schemes based on broad data-gathering systems. Since a broad data-gathering system is not available in most practical distribution networks, previously proposed approaches may not readily be implemented. This paper presents the utilization of stand-alone controlled APFs (SACAPFs) in radial distribution networks. Utilizing APFs with a stand-alone control system decreases implementation costs and complexity by making them autonomous and independent of integrated control systems, which are complicated and expensive in practical applications. In this paper, a single SACAPF is modeled as a dependent current source where its injection current is equal in amplitude but opposite in phase compared to the harmonic content of the current passing through the point of common coupling (reference current). Due to the pre... [more]

March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: air, Energy, entropy, Exergy, regression analysis, solar air collector
The paper presents the notion of high dimensionality—in the results—that could change the exergy and energy characteristics of the two-pass solar collector. To examine the energetic aspect of the collector, two different types of absorber plate surfaces were chosen: one that is smooth and one with triangular fins. Both designs have two-pass and wooden baffles underneath their absorber plates. The induced air blower was used for the forced convection of air. To examine the attribute of the data, the least angle regression (LARS) algorithm was used to find a new exergy model without overfitting the data. The second law efficiency dropped by 18.92% for the given models of the solar collector when the air flow rate surged further from 10.10 g·s−1 to 12.10 g·s−1, whereas the energy efficiency showed contradictory behaviour for the given range of air flow rate. It increased by 3% in the first half of the rise in the air flow rate, and on the other hand, a jump of 8% was recorded in the energ... [more]
Enabling Floating Offshore VAWT Design by Coupling OWENS and OpenFAST

March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT), hydrodynamics, OpenFAST, OWENS, vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT)
Vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) have a long history, with a wide variety of turbine archetypes that have been designed and tested since the 1970s. While few utility-scale VAWTs currently exist, the placement of the generator near the turbine base could make VAWTs advantageous over tradition horizontal-axis wind turbines for floating offshore wind applications via reduced platform costs and improved scaling potential. However, there are currently few numerical design and analysis tools available for VAWTs. One existing engineering toolset for aero-hydro-servo-elastic simulation of VAWTs is the Offshore Wind ENergy Simulator (OWENS), but its current modeling capability for floating systems is non-standard and not ideal. This article describes how OWENS has been coupled to several OpenFAST modules to update and improve modeling of floating offshore VAWTs and discusses the verification of these new capabilities and features. The results of the coupled OWENS verification test agree well... [more]

March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cogeneration plant, electrical power, exit gases from cement kilns, heat transfer, kalina cycles, waste heat recovery
The dwindling and scarcity of fossil energy sources is the basis of the energy transition, where renewable resources are increasingly valued. The purpose of the cogeneration system studied in this article is to recover the residual heat from the gases coming out of the chimneys of the cement kilns, to produce at the same time the electricity and the heat required for offices and residential houses of cement workers. Cement kilns are reputed to be energy-intensive, generating excessive heat losses. These heat losses are found mainly in the conduction−convective and radiative modes, representing about 26% of the overall heat input to the system. Nevertheless, the gases at the chimney outlet can still have temperatures between 250 and 350 °C, which presents a non-negligible potential for a cogeneration system. This study compares the thermal performance of different cogeneration plant configurations (KCA, KCB, and KCC systems) using the Kalina cycle to determine the best one. Several assu... [more]

Keywords: electric vehicles, lithium-ion, rechargeable energy storage system, regulation
This article constitutes a relatively new perspective that has emerged from the need to reduce environmental pollution from internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs) by reinforcing the fleet of electric vehicles (EVs) on the road. Future requirements to exclusively use zero-emission vehicles have resulted in the necessity of enhancing the testing and monitoring process for EVs in order to release reliable devices. The unpredictable response of lithium-ion batteries (LIBS), future lack of raw materials, and inconsistencies in the present regulations must be reviewed and understood in order to develop enhanced batteries. This article aims to outline the future perspective of nonconventional vehicles monopolizing the roads by year 2035 in order to eradicate CO2 emissions by year 2050.

March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: flower pollination algorithm, golden search, hybrid algorithm, loss minimization, network reconfiguration, radial distribution system, smart cities
Power losses (PL) are one of the most—if not the most—vital concerns in power distribution networks (DN). With respect to sustainability, distribution network reconfiguration (DNR) is an effective course of action to minimize power losses. However, the optimal DNR is usually a non-convex optimization process that necessitates the employment of powerful global optimization methods. This paper proposes a novel hybrid metaheuristic optimization (MO) method called the chaotic golden flower algorithm (CGFA) for PL minimization. As the name implies, the proposed method combines the golden search method with the flower pollination algorithm to multiply their benefits, guarantee the best solution, and reduce convergence time. The performance of the algorithm has been evaluated under different test systems, including the IEEE 33-bus, IEEE 69-bus, and IEEE 119-bus systems and the smart city (SC) network, each of which includes distributed-generation (DG) units and energy storage systems (ESS). Keywords: autonomous electric vehicle, back-stepping control, curve identification, induction motor, space vector modulation, speed planning
Autonomous electric vehicles (AEVs) have garnered increasing attention in recent years as they hold significant promise for transforming the transportation sector. However, despite advances in the field, effective vehicle drive control remains a critical challenge that must be addressed to realize the full potential of AEVs. This study presents a novel approach to AEV drive control for concurrently generating a suitable speed profile and controlling the vehicle drive speed along a planned path that takes into account various driving circumstances that mimic real-world driving. The designed strategy is divided into two parts: The first part presents a proposed speed planning algorithm (SPA) that works on developing an adequate speed profile for vehicle navigation; first, the algorithm uses an approach for identifying sharp curves on the predefined trajectory; secondly, based on the dynamic properties of these curves, it generates an appropriate speed profile to ensure smooth vehicle tra... Wind energy production has had accelerated growth in recent years, reaching an annual increase of 17% in 2021. Wind speed plays a crucial role in the stability required for power grid operation. However, wind intermittency makes accurate forecasting a complicated process. Implementing new technologies has allowed the development of hybrid models and techniques, improving wind speed forecasting accuracy. Additionally, statistical and artificial intelligence methods, especially artificial neural networks, have been applied to enhance the results. However, there is a concern about identifying the main factors influencing the forecasting process and providing a basis for estimation with artificial neural network models. This paper reviews and classifies the forecasting models used in recent years according to the input model type, the pre-processing and post-processing technique, the artificial neural network model, the prediction horizon, the steps ahead number, and the evaluation metric.... Keywords: cup-rotor permanent-magnet doubly fed machine, efficiency, extended-range electric vehicle, fuel consumption, load torque boundary, speed coupler
This paper investigates a cup-rotor permanent-magnet doubly fed machine (CRPM-DFM) for extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs). The topology and operating principle of the powertrain system based on CRPM-DFM are introduced. Then, the mathematical model of CRPM-DFM is established and the feedback linearization control of CRPM-DFM is given to realize the decoupling control of flux and torque. Moreover, the torque characteristic of CRPM-DFM is analyzed and the load torque boundaries with sinusoidal steady-state solution of CRPM-DFM is deduced. In addition, the MTPA control is derived to improve the efficiency of CRPM-DFM, and the efficiency of CRPM-DFM regarding various operating modes is investigated. Furthermore, the speed optimization strategy of ICE is proposed to reduce fuel consumption. Finally, the driving performance and fuel economy of the powertrain system are verified by simulation.
