David O. Usino, Taner Sar, Päivi Ylitervo, Tobias Richards
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fast pyrolysis, pretreatment of biomass, primary products, Py-GC/MS/FID
A high load of inorganics in raw lignocellulosic biomass is known to inhibit the yield of bio-oil and alter the chemical reactions during fast pyrolysis of biomass. In this study, palm kernel shell (PKS), an agricultural residue from palm oil production, and two other woody biomass samples (mahogany (MAH) sawdust and iroko (IRO) sawdust) were pretreated with distilled water or an acidic solution (either acetic, formic, hydrochloric (HCl) or sulfuric acid (H2SO4)) before fast pyrolysis in order to investigate its effect on the primary products and pyrolysis reaction pathways. The raw and pretreated PKS, MAH and IRO were pyrolysed at 600 °C and 5 s with a micro-pyrolyser connected to a gas chromatograph−mass spectrometer/flame ionisation detector (GC-MS/FID). Of the leaching solutions, HCl was the most effective in removing inorganics from the biomass and enhancing the primary pyrolysis product formed compared to the organic acids (acetic and formic acid). The production of levoglucosan... [more]

March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cementitious material, fly ash, granulated blast-furnace slag, industrial wastes, low carbon, steel slag
Cementitious material based on synergistic industrial wastes can be used as a new product for low-carbon transformation. It can aid in resource recycling and suitable consumption and utilisation of various industrial wastes. The proposed material can reduce a large amount of CO2 emitted during calcination in cement production and the decomposition of raw limestone. In addition, the material exhibits high durability and high resistance to corrosion in the marine environment that can further reduce CO2 emissions over the lifecycle of the carbon footprint of the building. Currently, many similar chemical kinetic processes and mineralogical reaction processes of particle migration and rebinding exist in the hydration and hardening reactions, service processes and durability evolution of different industrial waste cementitious systems for low-carbon production. The theoretical basis of preparing various low-carbon cementitious materials (LCCMs) with industrial waste systems is discussed her... [more]

March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: carbon neutralization, carbon peaking, low-carbon energy intensity, off-farm employment, rural residents
A study linking the two economic and social phenomena of rural labor force migration and energy transition can help analyze the underlying causes of rural “Energy Poverty”. However, how off-farm employment affects household low-carbon energy consumption and its potential mechanisms requires further research. Using 1351 sampled rural households from the “Rural Energy, Population Transfer and Well-being” survey in 2018 and 2021 to explore response mechanisms through which off-farm employment can influence low-carbon energy intensity. Utilizing the multivariate regression, Sobel test, and moderating effect test, the results demonstrate that off-farm employment, including short-term and long-term off-farm employment, significantly increases the intensity of low-carbon energy use among rural households. Specifically, long-term off-farm employment tends to have a greater positive contribution to the low-carbon energy intensity than short-term off-farm employment. Furthermore, off-farm employ... March 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bearings, condition monitoring, DFIG, K means, SCADA data, wind turbine
Condition monitoring of wind turbines is progressively increasing to maintain the continuity of clean energy supply to power grids. This issue is of great importance since it prevents wind turbines from failing and overheating, as most wind turbines with doubly fed induction generators (DFIG) are overheated due to faults in generator bearings. Bearing fault detection has become a main topic targeting the optimum operation, unscheduled downtime, and maintenance cost of turbine generators. Wind turbines are equipped with condition monitoring devices. However, effective and reliable fault detection still faces significant difficulties. As the majority of health monitoring techniques are primarily focused on a single operating condition, they are unable to effectively determine the health condition of turbines, which results in unwanted downtimes. New and reliable strategies for data analysis were incorporated into this research, given the large amount and variety of data. The development... [more]

Keywords: co-simulation, distributed energy resources, impact analysis, local energy markets, microgrids, peer-to-peer energy trading
Peer-to-peer (P2P) energy markets constitute a promising approach for locally coordinating the increasing amount of distributed energy resources (DERs) in the distribution system. Although the benefits of P2P markets for the prosumers are already well understood, their impact on utilities is not well discussed nor well understood. This hinders the development of regulatory frameworks, which are still needed to allow for the widespread adoption of decentralized energy markets in any interested country. So far, research has been conducted in specific isolated aspects, making it difficult to understand the overall implications for utilities. The present study aims to tackle this research gap by comprehensively evaluating P2P markets’ effects, considering utilities as primary stakeholders. A qualitative roadmap with the overall benefits and challenges of adopting P2P by utilities is outlined to reach this purpose. Technical and economic criteria are assigned for comparing a P2P market to t... [more]

March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: carbonate, low-salinity water, naturally fractured reservoirs, spontaneous imbibition
Analysis of fluid flow in naturally fractured reservoirs (NFRs), as a highly heterogeneous and complex system, requires a detailed study of the fracture-matrix interactions. The main process of fluid movement between the fracture and matrix is spontaneous imbibition (SI), which can occur in co/countercurrent fluid flow states. In addition, most carbonate rocks are fractured and non-water-wet, which can lead to low oil recovery. Wettability greatly affects the performance of the SI process. Injection of water or chemicals can be insufficient because fluids mostly pass through highly permeable fractures and lead to early breakthrough. Therefore, the wettability alteration mechanism should be applied in NFRs, and low-salinity water (LSW) injection is considered an effective enhanced oil recovery (EOR) approach. In this review, experimental and numerical studies of co/counter-imbibition are analyzed to show the importance of investigating the fracture-matrix interactions. In addition, the... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: co-combustion, gaseous pollutants, heavy metal, mixing ratio, sludge
The co-combustion of dry coal and sludge was carried out in a self-built laboratory scale fluidized bed furnace. We used FTIR spectroscopy, high-resolution gas chromatography, high-resolution mass spectrometry, and XRF to capture and dynamically observe the flue gas fly ash and bottom ash. The sludge sample was taken from a municipal sewage treatment plant and its mixing ratio was below 20%. The temperature distribution of the furnace was observed and the emissions of the main gaseous pollutants such as SO2, NOx, and dioxins were measured in the combustion process. The heavy metal contents of fly ash and bottom ash were later detected to analyze the migration characteristics. The results showed that all of the gaseous pollutants measured increased linearly with the sludge mixing ratio. However, it could also meet the 1 metal content of bottom ash and fly ash did not change much. Through the elaboration of the above points, this study can provide guidance for future research on the co-c... [more]

March 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: artificial neural networks, electricity distribution networks, hosting capacity, photovoltaic systems, quasi-static time series, reinforcement learning, voltage control
Increasing connection rates of rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems to electricity distribution networks has become a major concern for the distribution network service providers (DNSPs) due to the inability of existing network infrastructure to accommodate high levels of PV penetration while maintaining voltage regulation and other operational requirements. The solution to this dilemma is to undertake a hosting capacity (HC) study to identify the maximum penetration limit of rooftop PV generation and take necessary actions to enhance the HC of the network. This paper presents a comprehensive review of two topics: HC assessment strategies and reinforcement learning (RL)-based coordinated voltage control schemes. In this paper, the RL-based coordinated voltage control schemes are identified as a means to enhance the HC of electricity distribution networks. RL-based algorithms have been widely used in many power system applications in recent years due to their precise, efficient and model-f... [more]

Keywords: power quality, power transmission, Saudi Arabia grid code, solar photovoltaic generator, STATCOM, transient stability
Due to uncertain photovoltaic (PV) power generation, analyzing the voltage stability of transmission networks with a large PV plant is challenging. The stability of PV output power is a critical factor in establishing PV penetration levels in active transmission networks when assessing loading capabilities. Therefore, this article contributes to enhancing the understanding of how a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) could be used as part of the power system network. STATCOMs are often used to improve the static and transient voltage, maintain transmission limits, and reduce low-frequency disturbances. With the help of a STATCOM unit, a proper investigation and analysis of dynamic voltage stability in a transmission system are presented. The validity of the study is evaluated by the Saudi Arabia grid code (SAGC). The system being tested is comprised of a 300 MW PV plant in Sakaka, Saudi Arabia, integrated into a 17-bus transmission power network and a STATCOM, which is employed at... [more]

March 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deep neural network, Fault Detection, fire protection, high impedance fault, open conductor fault
Overhead lines that are exposed to the outdoors are susceptible to faults such as open conductors on weak points and disconnection caused by external factors such as typhoons. Arcs that occur during disconnection generate energy at a high heat of over 10,000 °C, requiring swift fault shut-off. However, most conventional fault detection methods to protect electrical power systems detect an overcurrent; thus, they can only detect faults after the line is disconnected and the cross-section of the line that generates the arc discharge makes contact with another line or the ground, causing a high risk of fire. Furthermore, in the case of ground faults owing to the disconnection of overhead lines, the load and the grounding impedance are not parallel. Therefore, in the case of the fault current not exceeding the threshold or a high impedance fault due to the high grounding impedance of the surrounding environment, such as grass or trees, it is difficult to determine overhead line faults with... March 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CNTs, heat and mass transfer, inclined MHD, induced slip, mass transpiration, radiation, stretching/shrinking sheet
The present article investigates viscous fluid flow’s heat and mass transfers over a stretching/shrinking sheet using the single and multi-wall carbon nanotube models. The analysis considers the effects of thermal radiation, induced slip, mass transpiration, and inclined magnetic force. The effect of the carbon nanotube model on fluid flow has not been considered in previous studies. By exploiting the similarity variable, the governing nonlinear partial differential equations are converted into nonlinear ordinary differential equation. The derived equations are solved analytically, and we obtained an exact solution for the velocity and energy conservation equation. The physical parameters of interest such as induced slip parameter, suction/injection, magnetic field, thermal radiation, and shear stress are analyzed and presented graphically. In particular, we show that the fluid flow in a single wall carbon nanotube transfers more energy than the multivalued nanotubes.

Keywords: agriculture, clustering, gateways, Internet of Things, Long Range Wide Area Networks, Performance Evaluation, wireless sensor networks
The use of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) in smart agriculture has emerged in recent years. LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Networks) is widely recognized as one of the most suitable technologies for this application, due to its capacity to transmit data over long distances while consuming little energy. Determining the number and location of gateways (GWs) in a production setting is one of the most challenging tasks of planning and building this type of network. Various solutions to the LoRaWAN gateway placement problem have been proposed in the literature, utilizing clustering algorithms; however, few works have compared the performance of various strategies. Considering all these facts, this paper proposes a strategy for planning the number and localization of LoRaWAN GWs, to cover a vast agricultural region. Four clustering algorithms were used to deploy the network GWs: K-Means and its three versions: Minibatch K-Means; Bisecting K-Means; and Fuzzy c-Means (FCM). As performance metr... [more]

Keywords: affine transformation, combustor performance simulation model, hybrid uncertainties, imprecise sensitivity analysis, multi-dimensional parallelepiped model, parameter correlation, probability box
Uncertainties are widely present in the design and simulation of aero-engine combustion systems. Common non-probabilistic convex models are only capable of processing independent or correlated uncertainty variables, while conventional precise probabilistic sensitivity analysis based on ideal conditions also fails due to the presence of uncertainties. Given the above-described problem, an imprecise p-box sensitivity analysis method is proposed in this study in accordance with a multi-dimensional parallelepiped model, comprising independent and correlated variables in a unified framework to effectively address complex hybrid uncertainty problems where the two variables co-exist. The concepts of the correlation angle and correlation coefficient of any two parameters are defined. A multi-dimensional parallelepiped model is built as the uncertainty domain based on the marginal intervals and correlation characteristics of all parameters. The correlated variables in the initial parameter spac... [more]

Keywords: cellular flame, flame instability, flat burner, gasification, municipal solid waste syngas, Natural Gas
This research was conducted to study the flame instability of syngas derived from raw municipal solid waste (MSW) and its potential as a natural gas (NG) replacement in power generation. MSW syngas is a mixture of various components such as methane (CH4), nitrogen (N2), oxygen (O2), and hydrogen (H2), whereas NG is mainly composed of CH4 (>70%) and CO2 (>10%). The flame characteristics of these two gases are quite different thus a direct replacement of NG with MSW syngas is impossible. Improvements to MSW syngas combustion are needed through the augmentation of the gas with CH4 and H2 active additives at various ratios so that its flame characteristics are comparable to those of NG. A typical MSW syngas composed of 16.2% methane (CH4), 13.5% hydrogen (H2), 69.1% nitrogen (N2), and 0.6% oxygen (O2) (by vol.) is available in Thailand with great potential for use as an NG replacement. In this study, this gas is used as a representative fuel for improvement and is referred to as simulated... [more]

March 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: forecasting, Machine Learning, renewable energy sources, wind turbines
Renewable energy sources, such as wind turbines, have become much more prevalent in recent years, and thus a popular form of energy generation. This is in part due to the ‘Fit for 55’ EU initiative, and in part, to rising fossil fuel prices, as well as the perceived requirement for nations to have power independence, and due to the influence of renewable energy sources we can see a marked increase in large wind farms in particular. However, wind farms by their very nature are highly inconsistent regarding power generation and are weather-dependent, thus presenting several challenges for transmission system operators. One of the options to overcome these issues is a system being able to forecast the generated power in a wide-ranging period—ranging from 15 min up to 36 h, and with an adequate resolution. Such a system would better help manage the power grid and allow for greater utilization of the green energy produced. In this document, we present a process of development for such a sys... [more]

Keywords: Electric Vehicle, energy management, Energy Storage, multi-agent optimization, reinforcement learning, Solar Photovoltaic
Energy management for multi-home installation of solar PhotoVoltaics (solar PVs) combined with Electric Vehicles’ (EVs) charging scheduling has a rich complexity due to the uncertainties of solar PV generation and EV usage. Changing clients from multi-consumers to multi-prosumers with real-time energy trading supervised by the aggregator is an efficient way to solve undesired demand problems due to disorderly EV scheduling. Therefore, this paper proposes real-time multi-home energy management with EV charging scheduling using multi-agent deep reinforcement learning optimization. The aggregator and prosumers are developed as smart agents to interact with each other to find the best decision. This paper aims to reduce the electricity expense of prosumers through EV battery scheduling. The aggregator calculates the revenue from energy trading with multi-prosumers by using a real-time pricing concept which can facilitate the proper behavior of prosumers. Keywords: cointegration, condition monitoring, Fault Detection, SCADA data, wind turbine
Cointegration theory has been recently proposed for condition monitoring and fault detection of wind turbines. However, the existing cointegration-based methods and results presented in the literature are limited and not encouraging enough for the broader deployment of the technique. To close this research gap, this paper presents a new investigation on cointegration for wind turbine monitoring using a four-year SCADA data set acquired from a commercial wind turbine. A gearbox fault is used as a testing case to validate the analysis. A cointegration-based wind turbine monitoring model is established using five process parameters, including the wind speed, generator speed, generator temperature, gearbox temperature, and generated power. Two different sets of SCADA data were used to train the cointegration-based model and calculate the normalized cointegrating vectors. The first training data set involves 12,000 samples recorded before the occurrence of the gearbox fault, whereas the sec... [more]
