Influence of C3N4 Precursors on Photoelectrochemical Behavior of TiO2/C3N4 Photoanode for Solar Water Oxidation
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: C3N4, heterojunction, nanorods, nanosheets, photoanode, photoelectrochemical, TiO2, water oxidation
Photoelectrochemical water splitting is considered as a long-term solution for the ever-increasing energy demands. Various strategies have been employed to improve the traditional TiO2 photoanode. In this study, TiO2 nanorods were decorated by graphitic carbon nitride (C3N4) derived from different precursors such as thiourea, melamine, and a mixture of thiourea and melamine. Photoelectrochemical activity of TiO2/C3N4 photoanode can be modified by tuning the number of precursors used to synthesize C3N4. C3N4 derived from the mixture of melamine and thiourea in TiO2/C3N4 photoanode showed photocurrent density as high as 2.74 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE. C3N4 synthesized by thiourea showed particle-like morphology, while melamine and melamine with thiourea derived C3N4 yielded two dimensional (2D) nanosheets. Nanosheet-like C3N4 showed higher photoelectrochemical performance than that of particle-like nanostructures as specific surface area, and the redox ability of nanosheets are believed t... [more]

GaN-based Matrix Converter Design with Output Filters for Motor Friendly Drive System
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: dv/dt, dv/dt filter, GaN HEMT, gate driver, leakage current, matrix converter, parasitic inductance, sine-wave filter
This paper introduces a gallium nitride (GaN) high electron mobility transistor (HEMT)-based matrix converter for motor friendly drive systems. A fast switching characteristic of the GaN devices causes high dv/dt. This increases the importance of noise immunity and the reduction of parasitic components in system design. In addition, the high dv/dt in motor drive systems leads to voltage spike at a motor input terminal and leakage current through a motor chassis. Accordingly, a gate drive circuit consists of devices with a high common mode transient immunity. A printed circuit board was designed to minimize parasitic inductance, which was analyzed by performing simulations. To mitigate the dv/dt of the voltage applied to the motor and the leakage current, a dv/dt filter and a sine-wave filter were utilized as an output filter of the matrix converter. The effectiveness of each filter was verified by driving an induction motor.

Estimation of Short Circuit Duration for the Assessment of Dynamic Effects in Distribution Substations with Flexible Conductors
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: dynamic effects, EHV distribution substation, Monte Carlo simulation, short circuit duration
The paper focuses on finding short circuit duration for computing the dynamic effects in Extra High Voltage (EHV) distribution substations with flexible conductors with the use of probabilistic method. To find fault duration for selected substation points, a risk criterion was involved, namely the expected annual frequency of exceeding the calculated values of dynamic forces. A dedicated simulation model based on the Monte Carlo method was used to analyze the dynamic effects of short circuit current flow in the substation during faults within it and in its vicinity. The short circuit duration model is the key part of the simulation model. Due to the discussion of how the selected factors affect the estimated short circuit duration, indications helpful to find the values of the latter were formulated and some examples for the 220 kV distribution substation were given.

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Friedman-OFW-KAS models, FT-IR, Pinus leiophylla, Pinus montezumae, Pinus pseudostrobus, pyrolysis kinetics, TGA-DTG
For the first time, a study has been carried out on the pyrolysis of wood residues from Pinus pseudostrobus, Pinus leiophylla and Pinus montezumae, from an area in Western México using TGA analysis to determine the main kinetic parameters (Ea and Z) at different heating rates in a N2 atmosphere. The samples were heated from 25 °C to 800 °C with six different heating rates 5−30 °C min−1. The Ea, was calculated using different widely known mathematical models such as Friedman, Flynn-Wall-Ozawa and Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose. The Ea value of 126.58, 123.22 and 112.72 kJ/mol (P. pseudostrobus), 146.15, 143.24 and 132.76 kJ/mol (P. leiophylla) and 148.12, 151.8 and 141.25 kJ/mol (P. montezumae) respectively, was found for each method. A variation in Ea with respect to conversion was observed with the three models used, revealing that pyrolysis of pines progresses through more complex, multi-stage kinetics. FT-IR spectroscopy was conducted to determine the functional groups present in the thre... [more]

IEC 61850-Based Centralized Busbar Differential Protection with Data Desynchronization Compensation
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: centralized busbar differential protection, data desynchronization compensation, IEC 61850, measurement timing error, time synchronization error
This paper proposes an IEC 61850-based centralized busbar differential protection scheme, in which data desynchronization between intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) leads to differential current errors. As the differential current errors could result in erroneous operation of the centralized busbar differential protection, data desynchronization should be compensated for. The main causes of data desynchronization are subdivided into measurement timing and time synchronization errors. In this paper, the first-order Lagrange interpolation polynomial is used to compensate for measurement timing errors and the voltage angle differences between IEDs are used to compensate for time synchronization errors. The centralized busbar differential protection is tested using a real-time digital simulator and IEC 61850-based IEDs, which are implemented with the MMS-EASE Lite library and Smart Grid Infrastructure Evaluation Module. The test results show that the data desynchronization compensation... [more]

Surrogate Model with a Deep Neural Network to Evaluate Gas−Liquid Flow in a Horizontal Pipe
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: deep neural network, horizontal pipe, liquid holdup, multiphase flow, pressure gradient, Surrogate Model
This study developed a data-driven surrogate model based on a deep neural network (DNN) to evaluate gas−liquid multiphase flow occurring in horizontal pipes. It estimated the liquid holdup and pressure gradient under a slip condition and different flow patterns, i.e., slug, annular, stratified flow, etc. The inputs of the surrogate modelling were related to the fluid properties and the dynamic data, e.g., superficial velocities at the inlet, while the outputs were the liquid holdup and pressure gradient observed at the outlet. The case study determined the optimal number of hidden neurons by considering the processing time and the validation error. A total of 350 experimental data were used: 279 for supervised training, 31 for validating the training performance, and 40 unknown data, not used in training and validation, were examined to forecast the liquid holdup and pressure gradient. The liquid holdups were estimated within less than 8.08% of the mean absolute percentage error, while... [more]

Turbine Characteristics of Wave Energy Conversion Device for Extraction Power Using Breaking Waves
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: breaking wave, Computational Fluid Dynamics, turbine and generator characteristics, wave energy conversion device
A new type of wave energy converter which harnesses electricity from onshore breaking waves has been studied at Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST) since 2014. This concept has been demonstrated at a coral beach on the Maldives since 2018. Wave energy conversion is possible when waves approaching the shore steepen due to decreased water depth resulting in wave breaks near the surface. A steepened wave reaches the critical velocity of 4~6 m/sec shoreward before it breaks. A rotating blade takes advantage of this breaking phenomenon to convert the wave energy into electricity. The work presented here includes an experimental and numerical investigation of a prototype model of the wave energy converter. The turbine having five blades of variable chord lengths, twist angles, and constant thickness profile from hub to tip was simulated under similar flow as well as testing conditions, to predict the turbine performance. Subject: Environment
Keywords: Czech Republic, economic growth, energy consumption, Energy Efficiency, renewable energy sources, Slovakia, sustainable development
Our paper focuses on the renewable energy and EU 2020 target for energy efficiency in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. We study the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in these two EU Member States through the prism of the Europe 2020 strategy and the 3 × 20 climate and energy package and economic growth (represented by the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) that allows to measure the national dynamics and provide cross-country comparisons) without attributing specific attention to issues such as the electrification of transport or heating, and thence leaving them outside the scope of this paper. Both Czech Republic and Slovakia are two post-Communist countries that still face the consequences of economic transformation and struggle with the optimal management of natural resources. Both countries encountered profound system transformation after 1989 that are apparent in all three measures of sustainable development used in our study. We show that it is unlikely that the planned incre... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: Biomass concentration, Carotenoids, Culture conditions, Golenkinia SDEC-16, High lipid content
Overproduction of biomass and hyper-accumulation of lipids endow microalgae with promising characteristics to realize the cost-effective potential of advanced bioenergy. This study sought to heuristically optimize the culture conditions on a rarely reported Golenkinia sp. The results indicate that Golenkinia SDEC-16 can withstand the strong light intensity and grow in a modified BG11 medium. The optimal culture conditions for the favorable tradeoff between biomass and lipid accumulation were suggested as follows, 25,000 lux of light intensity, 9 mM of initial nitrogen concentration, and 20 mM of initial sodium chloride concentration. Under these conditions, the biomass concentration and productivity reached 6.65 g/L and 545 mg/L/d, and the synchronous lipid content and productivity reached 54.38% and 296.39 mg/L/d. Hypersalinity significantly promoted lipid contents at the cost of biomass and resulted in an increase of cell size but loss of spines of Golenkinia SDEC-16. The results she... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fracturing-fluid imbibition, hydraulic fracture network, hydrodynamic equilibrium, shale gas wells, shut-in time
Post-fracturing well shut-in is traditionally due to the elastic closure of hydraulic fractures and proppant compaction. However, for shale gas wells, the extension of shut-in time may improve the post-fracturing gas production due to formation energy supplements by fracturing-fluid imbibition. This paper presents a methodology using numerical simulation to simulate the hydrodynamic equilibrium phenomenon of a hydraulically fractured shale gas reservoir, including matrix imbibition and fracture network crossflow, and further optimize the post-fracturing shut-in time. A mathematical model, which can describe the fracturing-fluid hydrodynamic transport during the shut-in process, and consider the distinguishing imbibition characteristics of a hydraulically fractured shale reservoir, i.e., hydraulic pressure, capillarity and chemical osmosis, is developed. The key concept, i.e., hydrodynamic equilibrium time, for optimizing the post-fracturing shut-in schedule, is proposed. The fracturing... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: BRICS countries, CO2 emissions, real output, renewable energy consumption
Climate change is one of the most important global problems faced by the international community. It is generally believed that increasing the consumption of renewable energy is an effective measure to promote CO2 emissions reduction. Therefore, renewable energy consumption has become one of the best alternative strategies for sustainable development. Based on this, this paper employs the 3SLS model to conduct an empirical study on the relations among real output, renewable energy consumption, and CO2 emissions of BRICS countries (except Russia) in 1999−2014. The empirical results support, for BRICS group, the complete tri-variate relationships (energy-output-emission nexus), and renewable energy had a significant positive impact on the real output, and vice versa. Besides, compared with other countries, Brazil also has the same tri-variate relationships as BRICS group. However, China has no relationship from real output to renewable energy consumption and from real output to CO2 emiss... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: constrained heat integration, pinch analysis, plant layout, steam network, total site analysis
The definition of appropriate energy targets for large industrial processes is a difficult task since operability, safety and plant layout aspects represent important limitations to direct process integration. The role of heat exchange limitations in the definition of appropriate energy targets for large process sites was studied in this work. A computational framework was used which allows to estimate the optimal distribution of process stream heat loads in different subsystems and to select and size a site wide utility system. A complex Swedish refinery site is used as a case study. Various system aggregations, representing different patterns of heat exchange limitations between process units and utility configurations were explored to identify trade-offs and bottlenecks for energy saving opportunities. The results show that in spite of the aforementioned limitations direct heat integration still plays a significant role for the refinery energy efficiency. For example, the targeted h... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: bio-fuels, bio-oil upgrading, deoxygenation, ex-situ pyrolysis, heterogeneous catalysis, Li-LSX-zeolite, microalgae pyrolysis
This paper investigates the use of Li-LSX-zeolite catalyst over three regeneration cycles in presence of non-treated and acid pre-treated Isochrysis sp. microalgae. The spent and regenerated catalysts were characterised by surface analysis, elemental analysis (EA), SEM-EDS, and XRD to correlate their properties with the bio-oil yield and quality. The acid pre-treatment removed alkali metals, reducing gas yield in favour of bio-oil, but, at the same time, led to catalyst deactivation by fouling. Differently, the non-treated microalgae resulted in a bio-oil enriched in C and H and depleted in O, compared to the pre-treated ones, denoting higher deoxygenation activity. After 3 pyrolysis/regeneration cycles, the analyses suggest that there are no major changes on catalyst using non-treated microalgae. Regeneration at 700 °C has been shown to be able to remove most of the coke without damaging the Li-LSX zeolite structure. In summary, Li-LSX zeolite was effective in maintaining deoxygenatio... Microgrids constitute an attractive solution for the electrification of areas where grid extension is not technically feasible or prohibitively expensive. In recent years, national governments have implemented various support policies to encourage the deployment of renewable energy systems (RES) and microgrid hybrid-powered systems. A fundamental aspect during the design and disposition of these types of units is the determination of the optimal configuration and sizing of each power generation component. Furthermore, the optimal design of microgrids is strongly dependent on technological parameters, local meteorological conditions, among other factors. In this context, this paper investigates the effects of different policy measures on the optimal configuration of microgrids functioning in islanded mode. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: compressible turbulent flow, Computational Fluid Dynamics, design rules, energy harvesting, high-pressure methane, tesla turbine
A countless amount of energy has been wasted in all kinds of expansion valves (EV) in industries. In fact, EVs, including regulators, throttling valves, capillary tubes, etc., have been used to intentionally reduce the potential of carrier fluid. City gate stations (CGS) have been recognized as one of the important points with high potential for energy harvesting due to its function for regulating natural gas (NG) pressure by EV. In this study, Tesla turbine (TT) is introduced as a new candidate for substitution of EV, particularly those that have been employed in CGS on high-pressure NG pipelines, as well as those applications in which high-potential fluid must be reduced to a low-potential state to form a complete thermodynamic cycle or to be used at end-user equipment.
