Optimal Coordination of Overcurrent Relays in Microgrids Considering a Non-Standard Characteristic
Sergio Danilo Saldarriaga-Zuluaga, Jesús María López-Lezama, Nicolás Muñoz-Galeano
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distributed generation, distribution networks, microgrids, overcurrent relay coordination, power system protection
The optimal coordination of overcurrent relays (OCRs) has recently become a major challenge owing to the ever-increasing participation of distributed generation (DG) and the multi-looped structure of modern distribution networks (DNs). Furthermore, the changeable operational topologies of microgrids has increased the complexity and computational burden to obtain the optimal settings of OCRs. In this context, classical approaches to OCR coordination might no longer be sufficient to provide a reliable performance of microgrids both in the islanded and grid-connected operational modes. This paper proposes a novel approach for optimal coordination of directional OCRs in microgrids. This approach consists of considering the upper limit of the plug setting multiplier (PSM) as a variable instead of a fixed parameter as usually done in traditional approaches for OCRs coordination. A genetic algorithm (GA) was implemented to optimize the limits of the maximum PSM for the OCRs coordination. Seve... [more]

Wilfredo C. Flores, Benjamin Bustamante, Hugo N. Pino, Ameena Al-Sumaiti, Sergio Rivera
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cost-benefit analysis, energy strategy, Honduras, improved cook stoves
The high consumption of firewood in Honduras necessitates the search for alternatives with less-negative effects on health, the economy, and the environment. One of these alternatives has been the promotion of improved cooking stoves, which achieve a large reduction in firewood consumption. This paper presents a cost-benefit analysis for an improved cooking stove adoption strategy for Honduras. The methodology uses the Long-range Energy Alternatives Planning System, LEAP, a tool used globally in the analysis and formulation of energy policies and strategies. The energy model considers the demand for firewood as well as the gradual introduction of improved cooking stoves, according to the premises of a National Strategy for improved cooking stoves adoption in Honduras. Hence, it is demonstrated that the costs of implementing this adoption strategy are lower than the costs of not implementing it, taking into consideration representative scenarios up to and including the year 2030.

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: automated negotiation, bilateral energy negotiations, local electricity markets, local energy markets, multi-agent systems, P2P electricity trading
Reliable access to electricity is still a challenge in many developing countries. Indeed, rural areas in sub-Saharan Africa and developing countries such as India still encounter frequent power outages. Local energy markets (LEMs) have emerged as a low-cost solution enabling prosumers with power supply systems such as solar PV to sell their surplus of energy to other members of the local community. This paper proposes a one-to-one automated negotiation framework for peer-to-peer (P2P) local trading of electricity. Our framework uses an autonomous agent model to capture the preferences of both an electricity seller (consumer) and buyer (small local generator or prosumer), in terms of price and electricity quantities to be traded in different periods throughout a day. We develop a bilateral negotiation framework based on the well-known Rubinstein alternating offers protocol, in which the quantity of electricity and the price for different periods are aggregated into daily packages and ne... March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aero-fuel centrifugal pump, combination impeller, flow characteristics, flow loss, head and efficiency
Aero-fuel centrifugal pumps are important power plants in aero-engines. Unlike most of the existing centrifugal pumps, a combination impeller is integrated with the pump to improve performance. First, the critical geometrical parameters of the combination impeller and volute are given. Then, the effects of the combination impeller on the flow characteristics of the impeller and volute are clarified by comparing simulation results with that of the conventional impeller, where the effectiveness of the selected numerical method is validated by an acceptable agreement between simulation and experiment. Finally, the experiment is set to test the external performance of the studied pump. A significant feature of this study is that the flow characteristics are significantly ameliorated by reducing the flow losses that emerged in the impeller inlet, impeller outlet, and volute tongue. Correspondingly, the head and efficiency of a combination impeller are higher with comparison to a conventiona... [more]

Xiao Gong, Fan Li, Bo Sun, Dong Liu
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: collaborative optimization scheduling, combined cooling heating and power (CCHP) system, day-ahead optimization, demand response, schedulable loads
Combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) systems are a promising energy-efficient and environment-friendly technology. However, their performance in terms of energy, economy, and environment factors depends on the operation strategy. This paper proposes a multi-energy complementary CCHP system integrating renewable energy sources and schedulable heating, cooling, and electrical loads. The system uses schedulable loads instead of energy storage, at the same time, a collaborative optimization scheduling strategy, which integrates energy supply and load demand into a unified optimization framework to achieve the optimal system performance, is presented. Schedulable cooling and heating load models are formulated using the relationship between indoor and outdoor house temperatures. A genetic algorithm is employed to optimize the overall performance of energy, economy, and environment factors and obtain optimal day-ahead scheduling scheme. Case studies are conducted to verify the efficien... [more]

Keywords: ancillary services, distributed generation, distribution grid, electricity markets, fault contribution, harmonics mitigation, inertia response, primary frequency response, renewable energy resources, voltage regulation
The high proliferation of converter-dominated Distributed Renewable Energy Sources (DRESs) at the distribution grid level has gradually replaced the conventional synchronous generators (SGs) of the transmission system, resulting in emerging stability and security challenges. The inherent characteristics of the SGs are currently used for providing ancillary services (ASs), following the instructions of the Transmission System Operator, while the DRESs are obliged to offer specific system support functions, without being remunerated for these functions, but only for the energy they inject. This changing environment has prompted the integration of energy storage systems as a solution for transfusing new characteristics and elaborating their business in the electricity markets, while the smart grid infrastructure and the upcoming microgrid architectures contribute to the transformation of the distribution grid. This review investigates the existing ASs in transmission system with the respe... [more]

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: differential capacity, distribution of relaxation times, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, joint estimation, lithium-ion battery, state-of-health evaluation
Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is a powerful tool for investigating electrochemical systems, such as lithium-ion batteries or fuel cells, given its high frequency resolution. The distribution of relaxation times (DRT) method offers a model-free approach for a deeper understanding of EIS data. However, in lithium-ion batteries, the differential capacity caused by diffusion processes is non-negligible and cannot be decomposed by the DRT method, which limits the applicability of the DRT method to lithium-ion batteries. In this study, a joint estimation method with Tikhonov regularization is proposed to estimate the differential capacity and the DRT simultaneously. Moreover, the equivalence of the differential capacity and the incremental capacity is proven. Different types of commercial lithium-ion batteries are tested to validate the joint estimation method and to verify the equivalence. The differential capacity is shown to be a promising approach to the evaluation of the... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: energy policy, energy production structure, energy similarity, European Green Deal, European Union countries, renewable energy sources
The European Union (EU) countries, as one of the most economically developed regions in the world, are taking increasingly decisive actions to reduce the emission of harmful substances into the natural environment. This can be exemplified by a new climate strategy referred to as “The European Green Deal”. Its basic assumption is that the EU countries will have achieved climate neutrality by 2050. To do so, it is necessary to make an energy transition involving the widest possible use of renewable energy sources (RES) for energy production. However, activities in this area should be preceded by analyses due to the large diversity of the EU countries in terms of economic development, the number of inhabitants and their wealth as well as geographical location and area. The results of such analyses should support the implementation of adopted strategies. In order to assess the current state of the energy sector in the EU and indicate future directions of activities, research was carried ou... [more]

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electromagnetic coils, magnetic manipulation, Micro-/Nano-robots
Untethered nano-/microrobots have been appealing to biomedical applications under magnetic guidance. Numerous actuation systems are specifically designed to generate either uniform or non-uniform fields which are unable to support all actuating mechanisms of magnetic robots. The size of their accessible space does not enable applications in life sciences (e.g., placing around human parts for tasks or an in vivo experiment in animals). Moreover, homogeneity of uniform magnetic fields is limited in a small region. Here, we propose an electromagnetic coil system that is optimally designed based on numerical simulation investigations to derestrict the mentioned constraints. The built-up system provides a large bore in which magnetic field generation by passing a 10 A current is strong enough for nano-/micromanipulation switchable between uniformity in a large-homogeneous region about 50-mm-wide along the x- and y-axes and 80-mm-wide along the z-axis, and with a non-uniformity of about 12 m... Keywords: density, design, die, durability, pellets, refuse-derived fuel, refuse-derived fuel (RDF)
Increasing production of waste has compelled the development of modern technologies for waste management. Certain fractions of municipal solid wastes are not suitable for recycling and must be utilised in other ways. Materials such as refuse-derived fuel (RDF) fractions are used as fuel in cement or CHP (combined heat and power) plants. The low bulk density leads to many problems pertaining to transportation and storage. In the case of biomass, these problems cause reduction in pelletisation. This paper therefore presents a comprehensive study on RDF pellet production, which is divided into three major areas. The first describes laboratory-scale tests and provides information on key factors that affect pellet quality (e.g., density and durability). Based on this, the second part presents a design of modified RDF dies to form RDF pellets, which are then tested via a semi-professional line test. The results show that RDF fraction can be compacted to form pellets using conventional device... [more]

Dimitrios Rizopoulos, Domokos Esztergár-Kiss
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: charging stations, daily activity chains, electric vehicles, intelligent transportation systems, ITS, Optimization
The focus of this article is to introduce a method for the optimization of daily activity chains of travelers who use Electric Vehicles (EVs) in an urban environment. An approach has been developed based on activity-based modeling and the Genetic Algorithm (GA) framework to calculate a suitable schedule of activities, taking into account the locations of activities, modes of transport, and the time of attendance to each activity. The priorities of the travelers concerning the spatial and temporal flexibility were considered, as well as the constraints that are related to the limited range of the EVs, the availability of Charging Stations (CS), and the elevation of the road network. In order to model real travel behavior, two charging scenarios were realized. In the first case, the traveler stays in the EV at the CS, and in the second case, the traveler leaves the EV to charge at the CS while conducting another activity at a nearby location. Through a series of tests on synthetic activi... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: Organic PCM, PV module cooling, Thermal absorption, Thermal dissipation
The solar photovoltaic (PV) system is emerging energetically in meeting the present energy demands. A rise in PV module temperature reduces the electrical efficiency, which fails to meet the expected energy demand. The main objective of this research was to study the nature of OM29, which is an organic phase change material (PCM) used for PV module cooling during the summer season. A heat transfer network was developed to minimize the experimental difficulties and represent the working model as an electrical resistance circuit. Most existing PV module temperature (TPV) reduction technology fails to achieve the effective heat transfer from the PV module to PCM because there is an intermediate layer between the PV module and PCM. In this proposed method, liquid PCM is filled directly on the back surface of the PV module to overcome the conduction barrier and PCM attains the thermal energy directly from the PV module. Further, the rear side of the PCM is enclosed by tin combined with alum... [more]

Keywords: ECG monitoring device, implantable medical device, wireless power transfer (WPT)
Implantable medical devices (IMDs) enable patients to monitor their health anytime and receive treatment anywhere. However, due to the limited capacity of a battery, their functionalities are restricted, and the devices may not achieve their intended potential fully. The most promising way to solve this limited capacity problem is wireless power transfer (WPT) technology. In this study, a WPT based implantable electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring device that continuously records ECG data has been proposed, and its effectiveness is verified through an animal experiment using a rat model. Our proposed device is designed to be of size 24 × 27 × 8 mm, and it is small enough to be implanted in the rat. The device transmits data continuously using a low power Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) communication technology. To charge the battery wirelessly, transmitting (Tx) and receiving (Rx) antennas were designed and fabricated. The animal experiment results clearly showed that our WPT system enables th... [more]

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: heat pump operation, sector integration, smart energy systems, time-dependent flexibility
The integration of multiple energy sectors, such as electricity, heating, and mobility, into an overall smart energy system is a key part of the journey towards a fossil-free energy system. Exploiting the operational flexibility of these sectors will lead to the efficient operation of the integrated smart energy system. The use of heat pumps for the heating supply based on renewable energy resources is reasonable in many cases. Combining heat pumps with thermal storages, these systems can offer flexibility to an energy system based on fluctuating power generation. Flexibility can be defined as the capability to adapt an initial schedule in order to support the energy system in terms of the provision of power reserve. In this paper, an approach to determine the time-dependent flexibility potential of a heat pump system is presented. The optimization-based approach considers all the constraints resulting from the system topology, including the required heating demand of the connected bui... [more]
Modeling the Impact of Modified Inertia Coefficient (H) due to ESS in Power System Frequency Response Analysis

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy storage system, frequency profile, load frequency control, virtual inertia, virtual synchronous machine
The advantages of increased penetration of distributed generation are also accompanied by several challenges, low inertia being one of them, which threatens the grid stability. An emerging approach to confront this problem is the introduction of so-called virtual inertia (VI) provided by energy storage systems (ESS). In contrast to the already available literature which considers a conventional load frequency control (LFC) model, this work concentrates on a modified LFC model as the integration of a large portion of ESS changes the inertia constant ( H ) of a power system. A sensitivity function is derived that shows the effects of changes in H on the power system’s frequency response. With the help of the developed mathematical model and simulation results, it is shown that a difference in the actual and calculated values of H can deteriorate the system performance and economy. As one of the reasons for this difference is improper modeling of ESS in the LFC model, ther... [more]

Keywords: artificial neural networks, metaheuristic optimization, meteorological input, photovoltaic power, prediction
Solar energy is a safe, clean, environmentally-friendly and renewable energy source without any carbon emissions to the atmosphere. Therefore, there are many studies in the field of solar energy in order to obtain the maximum solar radiation during the day time, to estimate the amount of solar energy to be produced, and to increase the efficiency of solar energy systems. In this study, it was aimed to predict the daily photovoltaic power production using air temperature, relative humidity, total horizontal solar radiation and diffuse horizontal solar radiation parameters as multi-tupled inputs. For this purpose, grey wolf, ant lion and whale optimization algorithms were integrated to the multilayer perceptron. In addition, the effects of sigmoid, sinus and hyperbolic tangent activation functions on the prediction performance were analyzed in detail. As a result of overall accuracy indictors achieved, the grey wolf optimization algorithm-based multilayer perceptron model was found to be... [more]

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bubble distribution, centrifugal pump, numerical simulation, population balance model
This work aimed to study the bubble distribution in a multiphase pump. A Euler-Euler inhomogeneous two-phase flow model coupled with a discrete particle population balance model (PBM) was used to simulate the whole flow channel of a three-stage gas-liquid two-phase centrifugal pump. Comparison of the computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation results with experimental data shows that the model can accurately predict the performance of the pump under various operating conditions. In addition, the liquid phase velocity distribution, gas-phase distribution, and pressure distribution of the second stage impeller at a 0.5 span of blade height under three typical working conditions were compared. Results show that the region with high local gas volume fraction (LGVF) mainly appears on the suction surface (SS) of the blade. With the increase in inlet gas volume fraction (IGVF), vortices and low velocity recirculation regions are generated at the impeller outlet and SS of the blade, the area... [more]

Keywords: anisotropic nanoporous membrane, power generation, reverse electrodialysis
In this study, reverse electrodialysis power generation using an anisotropic anodic aluminum oxide membrane with nanopores of two different pore diameters is proposed and experimentally investigated for the first time. A number of experiments were carried out for various combinations of concentrations to show that the anisotropic anodic aluminum oxide membrane is superior to the conventional isotropic membrane. As a result, the highest power density that was measured from the anisotropic membrane was 15.0 mW/m2, and it was 7.2 times higher than that from the isotropic membrane. The reasons why the anisotropic membrane is superior to the isotropic membrane are explained in detail. The experiments on the anisotropic membranes with various active layer lengths and pore diameters were also conducted for exploring the effects of these engineering parameters on the power generation performance. As a result, it was shown that the length of the active layer is a more important engineering para... [more]

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy harvesting, free surface, PTC, VIV
The experimental study of vortex induced vibration needs to be carried out in water tunnel, but in previous associated simulation work, the water tunnel was treated as an infinite flow field in the depth direction with the effect of the free surface neglected. In the paper, the dynamic characteristics and physical mechanisms of a passive turbulence control (PTC) cylinder in a flow field with a free surface is studied, and the combined technique of a volume of fluid (VOF) method and vortex-induced vibration (VIV) was realized. In the range of Reynolds number studied in this paper (3.5 × 104 ≤ Re ≤ 7.0 × 104), the dynamic parameters (lift and drag coefficients), vortex structures, VIV response (amplitude and frequency ratios), and energy harvesting characteristics of a PTC cylinder under different flow conditions were obtained. The study found that: (1) the shear layer was made more unstable behind the cylinder by the free surface, which made it quicker to reach periodic stability, and t... [more]

Keywords: battery energy storage system (BESS), battery management, doubly fed induction generator (DFIG), droop control, frequency control
This paper presents a novel methodology for frequency control of a microgrid through doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) employing battery energy storage system (BESS) and droop control. The proposed microgrid frequency control is the result of the active power injection from the droop control implemented in the grid side converter (GSC) of the DFIG, and the BESS implemented in the DC link of the back-to-back converter also in the DFIG. This methodology guarantees the battery system charge during operation of the connected DFIG in the network, and the frequency control in microgrid operation after an intentional disturbance. In order for the DFIG to provide frequency support to the microgrid, the best-performing droop gain value is selected. Afterwards its performance is evaluated individually and together with the power injected by the battery. The power used for both battery charging and frequency support is managed and processed by the GSC without affecting the normal operation of... [more]

Keywords: cross border trading, electricity trading, Granger causality, spot prices
Italy, Greece, and, to a lesser degree, Bulgaria have experienced fast growth in their renewable generation capacity (RESc) over the last several years. The consequences of this fact include a decrease in spot wholesale prices in electricity markets and a significant effect on cross border trading (CBT) among neighboring interconnected countries. In this work, we empirically analyzed historical data on fundamental market variables (i.e., spot prices, load, RES generation) as well as CBT data (imports, exports, commercial schedules, net transfer capacities, etc.) on the Greek, Italian, and Bulgarian electricity markets by applying the Granger causality connectivity analysis (GCCA) approach. The aim of this analysis was to detect all possible interactions among the abovementioned variables, focusing in particular on the effects of growing shares of RES generation on the commercial electricity trading among the abovementioned countries for the period 2015−2018. Keywords: fault identification, inter-turn short-circuit fault, inverter harmonics, negative sequence voltage, permanent magnet synchronous motor
Inter-turn short-circuit faults can lead to further faults in motors. This makes monitoring and identifying such faults particularly important. However, because of interference in their working environment, fault signals can be weak and difficult to detect in permanent magnet synchronous motors. This paper proposes a method for overcoming this by extracting the inverter harmonics as an excitation source and then extracting characteristic of fault measurements from the negative sequence voltage. First of all, a model of permanent magnet synchronous motor faults is established and a fault negative sequence voltage is introduced to calculate the fault indicators. Then the high frequency harmonic excitation in the voltage is extracted. This is injected into the original voltage signal and the high frequency negative sequence component is separated and detected by a second-order generalized integrator. Simulation results show that the proposed method can effectively identify inter-turn shor... [more]
