A Multivariate Statistics-Based Approach for Detecting Diesel Engine Faults with Weak Signatures
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: condition monitoring, diesel engine, Fault Detection, Multivariate Statistics, principal component analysis
The problem of timely detecting the engine faults that make engine operating parameters exceed their control limits has been well-solved. However, in practice, a fault of a diesel engine can be present with weak signatures, with the parameters fluctuating within their control limits when the fault occurs. The weak signatures of engine faults bring considerable difficulties to the effective condition monitoring of diesel engines. In this paper, a multivariate statistics-based fault detection approach is proposed to monitor engine faults with weak signatures by taking the correlation of various parameters into consideration. This approach firstly uses principal component analysis (PCA) to project the engine observations into a principal component subspace (PCS) and a residual subspace (RS). Two statistics, i.e., Hotelling’s T 2 and Q statistics, are then introduced to detect deviations in the PCS and the RS, respectively. The Hotelling’s T 2 and Q statisti... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: energy consumption, rural house, thermal environment
With the continuous implementation of a plan for reconstruction of “Beautiful Countryside” in China, the rural environment and appearance of rural houses have been significantly improved. However, those houses in cold areas of China have great trouble with indoor temperature and heating-related energy consumption. After investigating the current situation of the layout, building envelope, indoor temperature, and energy consumption of the rural houses renovated by the plan of “Beautiful Countryside” in Shandong Province, this paper puts forward the improvement measures of raising indoor temperature and reducing energy consumption. On this basis, a typical rural house was selected, and DesignBuilder was utilized to simulate the effects before and after the application of different renovation measures for this house. The results show that the main way to raise indoor temperature and reduce energy consumption is to improve the thermal insulation performance of the building envelope, includ... [more]

Numerical Modeling of Bifacial PV String Performance: Perimeter Effect and Influence of Uniaxial Solar Trackers
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: bifacial PV modeling, perimeter effect, solar tracker influence
The bifacial photovoltaic (PV) systems have recently met large interest. The performance of such systems heavily depends on the installation conditions and, in particular, on the albedo radiation collected by the module rear side. Therefore, it is of crucial importance to have an accurate performance model. To date, in the scientific literature, numerous models have been proposed and experimental data collected to study and optimize bifacial PV system performance. Currently, 3D and 2D models of bifacial PV devices exist. Though the former are more mathematically complex, they can lead to more accurate results, since they generally allow to fully consider the main aspects influencing a bifacial PV system performance. Recently, we have proposed and validated through experimental data a 3D model tested as a function of module height, tilt angle, and ground albedo. In this work, through such a model, we studied the role played by the perimeter zones surrounding the PV string, by considerin... [more]

Strategic-Agent Equilibria in the Operation of Natural Gas and Power Markets
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: electricity market, equilibrium analysis, natural-gas market
We consider strategic gas/power producers and strategic gas/power consumers operating in both gas and power markets. We build a flexible multi-period complementarity model to characterize day-ahead equilibria in those markets. This model is an equilibrium program with equilibrium constraints that characterizes the market behavior of all market agents. Using a realistic case study, we analyze equilibria under perfect and oligopolistic competition. We also analyze equilibria under different levels of information disclosure regarding market outcomes. We study as well equilibria under different ownership schemes: no hybrid agent, some hybrid agents, and only hybrid agents. Finally, we derive policy recommendations for the regulators of both the gas and the power markets.

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Cointegration test with regime shifts, energy structure, natural gas consumption, State space model
In recent years, China’s energy structure has been adjusted unceasingly, where the proportion of natural gas has been increasing year by year, and its external dependence has also been increasing. Therefore, it is necessary to discuss the correlation between China’s natural gas market and the international energy market. This paper studies the dynamic relationship between China’s total natural gas consumption, consumption structure, and the international price of oil from the perspectives of mutation and time-variance, using the cointegration test with regime shifts and a state space model. The results show that during the global financial crisis in 2008, the cointegration relationship between China’s total natural gas consumption and the international oil price has undergone structural changes. January 2012 and March 2015 are potential structural mutation points. After the structural mutation, the impact of the international price of oil on China’s total natural gas consumption has we... Time Domain Particle Swarm Optimization of PI Controllers for Bidirectional VSC HVDC Light System
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: bidirectional HVDC, decoupled d-q vector control, HVDC light system, modulus optimum (MO), particle swarm optimization (PSO), PI tuning, time-domain performance indices, voltage source converter (VSC)
This paper proposes a novel technique to tune the PI controllers of a bidirectional HVDC light system by embedding particle swarm optimization directly in the Simulink model in the design procedure. The HVDC light system comprises of a rectifier station, a DC link, and an inverter station. Each converter station requires four PI controllers to be tuned in the decoupled d-q vector control scheme, and with the bidirectional HVDC system, the required PI controllers are doubled. Tuning these many controllers using conventional methods is a challenging task, especially if the parameters of the converter stations are different. A novel approach to tune the PI controllers for a bidirectional HVDC system using the time-domain performance indices is presented in this paper. The time-domain performance indices are optimized using the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. The results of the proposed tuning method show that the proposed method not only gives superior results but also is les... [more]

Wind Farm Yaw Optimization via Random Search Algorithm
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: wake steering, wind farm, yaw optimization
One direction in optimizing wind farm production is reducing wake interactions from upstream turbines. This can be done by optimizing turbine layout as well as optimizing turbine yaw and pitch angles. In particular, wake steering by optimizing yaw angles of wind turbines in farms has received significant attention in recent years. One of the challenges in yaw optimization is developing fast optimization algorithms which can find good solutions in real-time. In this work, we developed a random search algorithm to optimize yaw angles. Optimization was performed on a layout of 39 turbines in a 2 km by 2 km domain. Algorithm specific parameters were tuned for highest solution quality and lowest computational cost. Testing showed that this algorithm can find near-optimal (<1% of best known solutions) solutions consistently over multiple runs, and that quality solutions can be found under 200 iterations. Empirical results show that as wind farm density increases, the potential for yaw opt... [more]

Optimal Price Based Demand Response of HVAC Systems in Commercial Buildings Considering Peak Load Reduction
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bi-level decision model, demand response (DR), electric utility companies (EUCs), heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, load leveling, peak load reduction, retail price
Electric utility companies (EUCs) play an intermediary role of retailers between wholesale market and end-users, maximizing their profits. Retail pricing can be well deployed with the support of EUCs to promote demand response (DR) programs for heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems in commercial buildings. This paper proposes a pricing strategy to help EUCs and building operators achieve an optimal DR of price-elastic HVAC systems, considering peak load reduction. The proposed strategy is implemented by adopting a bi-level decision model. The nonlinear thermal response of an experimental building room is modeled using piecewise linear equations, which helps convert the bi-level model to the single-level model. The pricing strategy is implemented considering a time-of-use (TOU) pricing scheme, leading to low price volatility. Case studies are conducted for two types of load curves and the results demonstrate that the proposed strategy helps EUC promote the price-base... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: active-clamp converter, DC-DC converter, eco-friendly vehicle, forward-flyback converter, high efficiency, high power density, integrated transformer, low-voltage DC converter, soft-switching
This paper presents a full-bridge active-clamp forward-flyback (FBACFF) converter with an integrated transformer sharing a single primary winding. Compared to the conventional active-clamp-forward (ACF) converter, the proposed converter has low voltage stress on the primary switches due to its full-bridge active-clamp structure, which can leverage high performance Silicon- metal−oxide−semiconductor field-effect transistor (Si-MOSFET) of low voltage rating and low channel resistance. Integrating forward and flyback operations allows the proposed converter to have much lower primary root mean square (RMS) current than the conventional phase-shifted-full-bridge (PSFB) converter, while covering wide input/output voltage range with duty ratio over 0.5. The proposed integrated transformer reduces the transformer conduction loss and simplify the secondary structure of the proposed converter. As a result, the proposed converter has several advantages: (1) high heavy load efficiency, (2) wide i... [more]

Current Balancing Algorithm for Three-Phase Multilevel Current Source Inverters
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: current balancing algorithm, level-shifted SPWM, medium-voltage applications, motor drives, multilevel current source inverter, phase-shifted carrier SPWM, STATCOM
In high power, medium voltage applications, Current Source Inverters CSIs are connected in parallel to accommodate high DC currents. Using a proper multilevel modulation technique, parallel-connected CSIs can operate as a Multilevel CSI (MCSI). The most common modulation technique for MCSIs is the Phase-Shifted Carrier SPWM (PSC-SPWM). The proper operation of the MCSI requires each CSI modules to have the same average current flowing through its sharing inductors. In practice, the average currents of the CSI modules deviate from their nominal values. Therefore, current balancing mechanisms must be implemented. In the literature, several solutions have been proposed to tackle the current imbalance problem. Most of these solutions are based on altering the phase-shift or magnitude of the carrier waveforms of the PSC-SPWM. They require dedicated PI controllers and they are applicable to MCSIs with specific numbers of levels. This paper proposes a Current Balancing Algorithm (CBA) that can... [more]

A Hybrid Model for Lift Response to Dynamic Actuation on a Stalled Airfoil
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: dynamic actuation, flow control, low-order modeling
The current research focuses on modeling the lift response due to dynamic (time-varying) “burst-type” actuation on a stalled airfoil. Here, the “burst-type” actuation refers to the synthetic jet (generated from the actuator) that is used for flow separation mitigation. Dynamic “burst-type” actuation exhibits two different characteristic dynamic behaviors within the system; namely, the high-frequency and low-frequency components. These characteristics introduce modeling challenges. In this paper, we propose a hybrid model composed of two individual sub-models, one for each of the two frequencies. The lift response due to high-frequency burst actuation is captured using a convolution model. The low-frequency component due to nonlinear burst-burst interactions is captured using a Wiener model, consisting of linear time-invariant dynamics and a static output nonlinearity. The hybrid model is validated using data from wind tunnel experiments.
