Plug-in Electric Vehicles for Grid Services Provision: Proposing an Operational Characterization Procedure for V2G Systems
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: ancillary services, CHAdeMO, PEV charger, test procedure
Plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) are expected to play a role as power grid ancillary service providers through vehicle-to-grid (V2G) chargers, enabling higher levels of renewable electricity penetration. However, to fully exploit the storage capacity of PEVs and fast responsiveness, it is crucial to understand their operational characteristics. This work proposes a characterization procedure for V2G systems providing grid services. It extends the existing literature on response time, AC/DC conversion and reactive power assessment. Illustrative results were obtained by implementing the procedure using a Nissan Leaf battery electric vehicle (BEV) connected to a remotely operated commercial V2G CHAdeMO charger. The V2G system was characterized as having a relative inaccuracy and variability of response inferior to 3% and 0.4%, respectively. Its average communication and ramping times are 2.37 s and 0.26 s/kW, respectively. Its conversion efficiency and power factor both showed degradation... [more]

Power System Nonlinear Modal Analysis Using Computationally Reduced Normal Form Method
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: modal interaction, nonlinear modal analysis, power system analysis, reduced normal form
Increasing nonlinearity in today’s grid challenges the conventional small-signal (modal) analysis (SSA) tools. For instance, the interactions among modes, which are not captured by SSA, may play significant roles in a stressed power system. Consequently, alternative nonlinear modal analysis tools, notably Normal Form (NF) and Modal Series (MS) methods are being explored. However, they are computation-intensive due to numerous polynomial coefficients required. This paper proposes a fast NF technique for power system modal interaction investigation, which uses characteristics of system modes to carefully select relevant terms to be considered in the analysis. The Coefficients related to these terms are selectively computed and the resulting approximate model is computationally reduced compared to the one in which all the coefficients are computed. This leads to a very rapid nonlinear modal analysis of the power systems. The reduced model is used to study interactions of modes in a two-ar... [more]

Electrodialytic Energy Storage System: Permselectivity, Stack Measurements and Life-Cycle Analysis
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electrodialytic energy storage system (EESS), life-cycle analysis (LCA), permselectivity, reverse electrodialysis (RED)
Reverse electrodialysis and electrodialysis can be combined into a closed energy storage system, allowing for storing surplus energy through a salinity difference between two solutions. A closed system benefits from simple temperature control, the ability to use higher salt concentrations and mitigation of membrane fouling. In this work, the permselectivity of two membranes from Fumatech, FAS-50 and FKS-50, is found to be ranging from 0.7 to 0.5 and from 0.8 to 0.7 respectively. The maximum unit cell open-circuit voltage was measured to be 115 ± 9 mV and 118 ± 8 mV at 25 ° C and 40 ° C, respectively, and the power density was found to be 1.5 ± 0.2 W m uc − 2 at 25 ° C and 2.0 ± 0.3 W m uc − 2 at 40 ° C. Given a lifetime of 10 years, three hours of operation per day and 3% downtime, the membrane price can be 2.5 ± 0.3 $ m − 2 and 1.4 ± 0.2 $ m − 2 to match the energy price in the EU and the USA, resp... An Ultrasonic Longitudinal Through-Transmission Method to Measure the Compressive Internal Stress in Epoxy Composite Specimens of Gas-Insulated Metal-Enclosed Switchgear
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: acoustoelastic effect, basin insulator, internal stress measurement, ultrasonic longitudinal waves
Situations of internal stress in basin insulators inside gas-insulated metal-enclosed switchgear (GIS) can lead to cracks, which can influence the safety and stability of apparatus. However, there is currently no research on internal stress measurements for composites of GIS basin insulators, and only measurements for surface stress. In this paper, an internal stress measurement method for GIS epoxy composite is proposed using an ultrasonic longitudinal through-transmission technique based on the acoustoelastic effect. An internal stress measurement system is developed to investigate the relationship between the uniaxial compressive internal stress and the velocity of the ultrasonic wave vertical to the stress in epoxy composite within a range of 0−70 MPa, and to calculate the acoustoelastic coefficient of epoxy composite. The effects of system delay are eliminated in measuring the propagation time. Some epoxy composite cuboid specimens with similar materials and using a manufacturing... [more]

Study of the Improvement on Energy Efficiency for a Building in the Mediterranean Area by the Installation of a Green Roof System
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air conditioning, buildings, Energy Efficiency, green roofs, mediterranean area
Rooftop gardens ona building have proved to be a good way to improve its storm water management, but many other benefits can be obtained from the installation of these systems, such as reduction of energy consumption, decrease of the heat stress, abatement on CO2 emissions, etc. In this paper, the effect from the presence of these rooftop gardens on abuilding’s energy consumption has been investigated by experimental campaigns using a green roof ona public building in a Mediterranean location in Spain. The obtained results demonstrate a substantial improvement by the installation of the green roof onthe building’s cooling energy demand for a standard summer day, in the order of 30%, and a reduction, about 15%, in the heating energy demand for a winter day. Thus, given the longer duration of the summer conditions along the year, a noticeable reduction on energy demand could be obtained. Wave-Turbulence Decomposition Methods Applied to Tidal Energy Site Assessment
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: integral length scales, site assessment, tidal energy, turbulence, wave-current interaction, wave-turbulence decomposition
High levels of turbulence have been proven to substantially increase the blade loadings on tidal turbines, outlining the need of properly characterizing turbulence parameters in tidal energy sites. The presence of long surface gravity waves may cause a significant bias on the estimation of these parameters, which requires wave-turbulence decomposition methods that are currently missing from guidelines. Here, three techniques of decomposing wave and turbulence are tested: the stopband filter (SB), moving average filter (MA), and synchrosqueezing wavelet transform (SWT). The study site, Banks Strait, Tasmania, is a 16 km wide channel that presents high potential for tidal energy generation. Wave peak periods at the study site were found to vary mostly between 7 and 12 s, with maximum exceeding 15 s. Turbulence intensities (TI), turbulent kinetic energy (TKE), and integral scales are quantified. Our results indicate differences between the estimates obtained from each method. The MA highl... Subject: Other
Keywords: contactless charging, contactless power transmission, energy harvesting, inductive power transmission, MISO system, multi-coil system, multiplexer, passive peak detector, resonant power transmission, wireless power transmission, wireless sensor node
Multi-input single output wireless power transmission (MISO-WPT) systems have decisive advantages concerning flexible receiver position in comparison to single coil systems. However, the supply of the primary side brings a large uncertainty in case of variable positions of the secondary side. In this paper, a compact multiplexed primary side electronic circuit is proposed, which includes only one signal generator, a passive peak detector, a communication module, and a compensation capacitor. The novel approach has been studied and evaluated for a MISO-WPT system having a 16 coils on primary side and one coil on secondary side having the double diameter. Results show that a standard microcontroller, in this case an STM32, is sufficient for the control of the whole system, so that the costs and the energy consumption are significantly reduced. An activation strategy has been proposed, which allows to determine the optimal transmitting coil for each position of the receiving coil and to s... [more]

The Cost-Optimal Analysis of a Multistory Building in the Mediterranean Area: Financial and Macroeconomic Projections
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: BEopt, building design, cost-optimal analysis, economic projections
Cost-optimal analysis was pointed out in the 2010/31 European Directive as a tool to evaluate the achievable building energy performance levels as a function of the corresponding costs. These analyses can be carried out by a financial projection for private investors and a macroeconomic approach to establish the minimal energy performance levels. Consequently, the financial projection provides different results that could stimulate private investors toward other cost-optimal solutions that do not match the minimal energy performance levels. For this purpose, both the projections were analyzed in the BEopt environment, developed by NREL, on a multistory building located in two contrasting climatic zones of the Mediterranean area, one cold and the other warm, highlighting the differences. The cost-optimal solutions were identified by a parametric study involving measures that affect thermal losses and solar gains, whereas the air-conditioning plant was left unchanged in order to include... Hydrothermal depolymerization of lignin-rich streams (LRS) from lignocellulosic ethanol was successfully carried out in a lab-scale batch reactors unit. A partial depolymerization into oligomers and monomers was achieved using subcritical water as reaction medium. The influence of temperature (300−350−370 °C) and time (5−10 minutes) was investigated to identify the optimal condition on the monomers yields in the lighter biocrude (BC1) and aqueous phase (AP) fractions, focusing on specific phenolic classes as well as carboxylic acids and alcohols. The effect of base catalyzed reactions (2−4 wt. % of KOH) was compared to the control tests as well as to acid-catalyzed reactions obtained with a biphasic medium of supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) and subcritical water. KOH addition resulted in enhanced overall depolymerization without showing a strong influence on the phenolic generation, whereas sCO2 demonstrated higher phenolic selectivity even though no effect was observed on the over... Energy Gain in Passive Solar Greenhouses Due to CO2 Enrichment
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: CO2 enrichment, energy saving, greenhouse, passive solar heating system
The production cost of greenhouse cultivation depends mainly upon significant amounts of energy consumption in order to keep the optimum environmental condition for plant growth. Τhe expenditure on energy, either for heating or cooling, ranges between 30% to 60% of the total production costs, and any attempt to save energy will result in a positive effect on the potentiality of production accordingly, affecting the greenhouse product prices. Research has shown that CO2 enrichment in greenhouses significantly increases the yield of most indoor cultivation of plants of the C3 category. For these plants, when the CO2 concentration increases by three times above that of the atmosphere (380 ppm), the optimum plant growth temperature shifts higher by 5 °C to 10 °C reaching up to 30 °C to 32 °C. Therefore, huge amounts of solar energy can be captured inside the greenhouses, as the ventilation can be decreased. Alongside this, the use of a simple passive solar system consisting of plastic slee... [more]

Improved Hydrogen-Production-Based Power Management Control of a Wind Turbine Conversion System Coupled with Multistack Proton Exchange Membrane Electrolyzers
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: control, current ripple, power electronics, proton exchange membrane electrolyzer, stacked interleaved DC–DC converter, wind turbine conversion system
This paper deals with two main issues regarding the specific energy consumption in an electrolyzer (i.e., the Faraday efficiency and the converter topology). The first aspect is addressed using a multistack configuration of proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers supplied by a wind turbine conversion system (WTCS). This approach is based on the modeling of the wind turbine and the electrolyzers. The WTCS and the electrolyzers are interfaced through a stacked interleaved DC−DC buck converter (SIBC), due to its benefits for this application in terms of the output current ripple and reliability. This converter is controlled so that it can offer dynamic behavior that is faster than the wind turbine, avoiding overvoltage during transients, which could damage the PEM electrolyzers. The SIBC is designed to be connected in array configuration (i.e., parallel architecture), so that each converter operates at its maximum efficiency. To assess the performance of the power management strategy... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dead-ended operation, metal foam, polymer electrolyte fuel cell, portable power source, water management
Portable power sources have attracted increasing interest and attention, with a focus on the reduction of the system volume. Thus, portable power sources often use polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) systems with dead-ended operation—which are simpler and more fuel-efficient than conventional PEFC systems. In these systems, the fuel may be supplied under nonhumidified conditions to minimize the balance of plant (BOP). In recent studies, metal foams have been used as flow fields to improve fuel diffusion and water management in the PEFC; the performance can be compared to that of a conventional channel. This study compared the performance and water management ability of channel and metal foam flow fields under nonhumidified conditions with dead-ended operation. The results demonstrate that the average output was similar for both flow fields. In terms of fuel efficiency, the PEFC with the metal foam could be operated for a significantly longer time without purging than that with the cha... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery/ultracapacitor, bidirectional power converter, dual-energy, electric vehicles
A patented bidirectional power converter was studied as an interface to connect the DC-bus of driving inverter, battery energy storage (BES), and ultracapacitor (UC) to solve the problem that the driving motor damages the battery life during acceleration and deceleration in electric vehicles (EVs). The proposed concept was to adopt a multiport switch to control the power flow and achieve the different operating mode transitions for the better utilization of energy. In addition, in order to improve the conversion efficiency, the proposed converter used a coupled inductor and interleaved-pulse-width-modulation (IPWM) control to achieve a high voltage conversion ratio (i.e., bidirectional high step-up/down conversion characteristics). This study discussed the steady-state operation and characteristic analysis of the proposed converter. Finally, a 500 W power converter prototype with specifications of 72 V DC-bus, 24 V BES, and 48 V UC was built, and the feasibility was verified by simulat... [more]

Flow Allocation in Meshed AC-DC Electricity Grids

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: European electricity grid, flow allocation, power system analysis, transmission cost allocation
In power systems, flow allocation (FA) methods enable to allocate the usage and costs of the transmission grid to each single market participant. Based on predefined assumptions, the power flow is split into isolated generator-specific or producer-specific sub-flows. Two prominent FA methods, Marginal Participation (MP) and Equivalent Bilateral Exchanges (EBEs), build upon the linearized power flow and thus on the Power Transfer Distribution Factors (PTDFs). Despite their intuitive and computationally efficient concepts, they are restricted to networks with passive transmission elements only. As soon as a significant number of controllable transmission elements, such as high-voltage direct current (HVDC) lines, operate in the system, they lose their applicability. This work reformulates the two methods in terms of Virtual Injection Patterns (VIPs), which allows one to efficiently introduce a shift parameter q to tune contributions of net sources and net sinks in the network. Subject: Materials
Keywords: metal oxide, moving bed, thermochemical energy storage
High-temperature thermal energy storage enables concentrated solar power plants to provide base load. Thermochemical energy storage is based on reversible gas−solid reactions and brings along the advantage of potential loss-free energy storage in the form of separated reaction products and possible high energy densities. The redox reaction of metal oxides is able to store thermal energy at elevated temperatures with air providing the gaseous reaction partner. However, due to the high temperature level, it is crucial to extract both the inherent sensible and thermochemical energies of the metal-oxide particles for enhanced system efficiency. So far, experimental research in the field of thermochemical energy storage focused mainly on solar receivers for continuously charging metal oxides. Keywords: eigenvalues, least square method, oscillatory stability, Particle Swarm Optimization, synchronizing and damping torque coefficients
This study discusses the evaluation of oscillatory stability based on the synchronizing K s and damping K d torque coefficients for a single-machine system connected to an infinite bus (SMIB). Particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique is used to determine K s and K d values and subsequently identify the oscillatory stability conditions in the SMIB. The ability of PSO is compared with those of evolutionary programming (EP) techniques and artificial immune system (AIS). The least square (LS) method is selected as the benchmark for K s and K d values determined by PSO, EP, and AIS. Simulation results show that PSO successfully estimated K s and K d values closest to LS compared with EP and AIS. PSO also uses lower computational time compared with those of the two other techniques. The proposed technique is suitable for solving oscillatory stability problems based on the determination of eigenvalues and minimum damping ratio... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: heat transfer, regenerative cooling, supercritical fluids, supercritical kerosene
Heat transfer of supercritical-pressure kerosene is crucial for regenerative cooling systems in rocket engines. In this study, experiments were devoted to measure the heat transfer of supercritical-pressure kerosene under ultra-high heat fluxes. The kerosene flowed horizontally in a mini circular tube with a 1.0 mm inner diameter and was heated uniformly under pressures of 10−25 MPa, mass fluxes of 8600−51,600 kg/m2 s, and a maximum heat flux of up to 33.6 MW/m2. The effects of the operating parameters on the heat transfer of supercritical-pressure kerosene were discussed. It was observed that the heat transfer coefficient of kerosene increases at a higher mass flux and inlet bulk temperature, but is little affected by pressure. The heat transfer of supercritical-pressure kerosene is classified into two regions: normal heat transfer and enhanced heat transfer. When the wall temperature exceeds a certain value, heat transfer is enhanced, which could be attributed to pseudo boiling. This... [more]

Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: breakup, bubble size distribution, helical static mixer, method of moments, pressure drop
Flow resistance and bubble transport in a helical static mixer were studied experimentally and numerically. The inline mixer increases the volume fraction of gas in liquids by breaking bubbles into smaller sizes with a micrometer size in the flow experiments. The gas−liquid flow was simulated by a combination of computational fluid dynamics and Taylor expansion methods of moments. The friction factor of the helical static mixer is much smaller than that of the Kenics static mixers. The pressure drop increases with the Reynolds number, and the increment is larger when the Reynolds number is higher. The equidistant pressure drop increases with the argument of Reynolds number, and increases when the pitch decreases from upstream to downstream. The energy expenditure increases significantly when the variable-pitch coefficient is too small. The bubble geometric mean diameter decreases and the geometric standard deviation increases when the gas−liquid fluid flows through the mixer. The varia... [more]

Keywords: IGBT module, lifetime, power device, PV inverter, reliability, three-level inverter
The cost of the PV energy reduction is still required to increase the penetration level of PV systems in the energy market. The reliability of PV inverters is one of the important aspects to be enhanced in order to reduce the cost of PV energy, since it is closely related to the maintenance cost and the annual energy production. In this paper, the lifetime of NPC and T-type inverters, which are three-level inverter topologies that are widely used for PV systems, are comparatively evaluated with a 30 kW grid-connected PV system. Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: Benders’ decomposition, distributed generation planning (DGP), renewable energy sources (RES), two-stage stochastic mixed-integer linear programming (MILP)
A model suitable to obtain where and when renewable energy sources (RES) should be allocated as part of generation planning in distribution systems is formulated. The proposed model starts from an existing two-stage stochastic mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problem including investment and scenario-dependent operation decisions. The aim is to minimize photovoltaic and wind investment costs, operation costs, as well as total substation costs including the cost of the energy bought from substations and energy losses. A new Benders’ decomposition framework is used to decouple the problem between investment and operation decisions, where the latter can be further decomposed into a set of smaller problems per scenario and planning period. The model is applied to a 34-bus system and a comparison with a MILP model is presented to show the advantages of the model proposed.
