Practical Implementation of Adaptive SRF-PLL for Three-Phase Inverters Based on Sensitivity Function and Real-Time Grid-Impedance Measurements
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: control systems, impedance measurement, phase locked loops, power electronics, stability analysis, system identification
Rapidly increasing demand for renewable energy has created a need for the photovoltaic and wind farms to be placed in various locations that have diverse and possibly time-variant grid conditions. A mismatch between the grid impedance and output admittance of an inverter causes impedance-based stability issues, which appear as power quality problems and poor transient performance. Grid synchronization with phase-locked loop (PLL) introduces a negative-resistance-like behavior to inverter output admittance. High control bandwidth of the PLL makes the system sensitive to impedance-based stability issues when the inverter is connected to a weak grid that has high impedance. However, very conservative tunings lead to overly damped dynamic responses in strong grids, where the control performance and power quality can be improved by applying higher PLL control bandwidths. Continuous evaluation of grid conditions makes it possible to avoid the risk of instability and poor dynamic responses, a... [more]

Thickness Distribution Prediction for Tectonically Deformed Coal with a Deep Belief Network: A Case Study
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: deep belief network, dimensional reduction, prediction, seismic attribute, TDC, thickness
Thickness of tectonically deformed coal (TDC) has positive correlations with the susceptible gas outbursts in coal mines. To predict the TDC thickness of the coalbed, we proposed a prediction method using seismic attributes based on the deep belief network (DBN) and dimensionality reduction. Firstly, we built a DBN prediction model using the extracted attributes from a synthetic seismic section. Next, we transformed the possibly correlated seismic attributes into principal components through principal components analysis. Then, we compared the true TDC thickness with the predicted TDC thicknesses to evaluate the prediction accuracy of different models, i.e., a DBN model, a support vector machine model, and an extreme learning machine model. Finally, we used the DBN model to predict the TDC thickness of coalbed No. 8 in an operational coal mine based on synthetic experiments. Our studies showed that the predicted distribution of TDC thickness followed the regional characteristics of TDC... [more]

District Heating Tariffs, Economic Optimisation and Local Strategies during Radical Technological Change
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: district heating, economic optimisation, heat savings, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, strategic heat planning
This paper addresses economic aspects of heat savings in the context of strategic heat planning. The analysis uses the city of Aalborg, Denmark, as a case where municipalisation through a recent acquisition of a coal-fired cogeneration of heat and power (CHP) plant has made an update of a municipal strategic energy plan necessary. Combining datasets on buildings and insulation techniques with economic methods, we investigate how the local district heating tariff can be adapted to improve the conditions for heat savings and support the transition to lower supply temperatures in line with the requirements of future fourth generation district heating systems. The paper concludes that implementing a fully variable heat tariff scheme improves the financial incentive for heat savings, while also making the system development less vulnerable to fluctuations and shortages in capital markets. The paper supplements existing literature on heat savings with novelty in its approach and in its syste... [more]

Synthesis Gas Composition Prediction for Underground Coal Gasification Using a Thermochemical Equilibrium Modeling Approach
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Cantera, oxidizer, synthesis gas, thermodynamic equilibrium composition, underground coal gasification
Underground coal gasification (UCG) is an in situ conversion technique that enables the production of high-calorific synthesis gas from resources that are economically not minable by conventional methods. A broad range of end-use options is available for the synthesis gas, including fuels and chemical feedstock production. Furthermore, UCG also offers a high potential for integration with Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. In the present study, a stoichiometric equilibrium model, based on minimization of the Gibbs function has been used to estimate the equilibrium composition of the synthesis gas. Thereto, we further developed and applied a proven thermodynamic equilibrium model to simulate the relevant thermochemical coal conversion processes (pyrolysis and gasification). Our modeling approach has been validated against thermodynamic models, laboratory gasification experiments and UCG field trial data reported in the literature. The synthesis gas co... [more]

An Integrated Energy Simulation Model for Buildings
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: deformable models, electric energy demand, functional statistics, Kalman filtering, shape-invariant model
The operation of buildings is linked to approximately 36% of the global energy consumption, 40% of greenhouse gas emissions, and climate change. Assessing the energy consumption and efficiency of buildings is a complex task addressed by a variety of methods. Building energy modeling is among the dominant methodologies in evaluating the energy efficiency of buildings commonly applied for evaluating design and renovation energy efficiency measures. Although building energy modeling is a valuable tool, it is rarely the case that simulation results are assessed against the building’s actual energy performance. In this context, the simulation results of the HVAC energy consumption in the case of a smart industrial near-zero energy building are used to explore areas of uncertainty and deviation of the building energy model against measured data. Initial model results are improved based on a trial and error approach to minimize deviation based on key identified parameters. In addition, a nove... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: chemical kinetic, F–T surrogate model, skeletal mechanism
Fischer−Tropsch (F−T) fuel, synthesized from coal-to-liquid (CTL), is an alternative fuel with clean and efficient characteristics. In this study, a surrogate fuel model was developed, including n-dodecane (n-C12H26) and iso-octane (i-C8H18), which represents the n-alkane and iso-alkane in F−T fuel synthesized from CTL, respectively. The proportions of the components in the surrogate fuel are determined by the characteristics of the practical fuel, including cetane number (CN), C/H ration and component composition. For the establishment of the skeletal mechanism model, firstly, based on a two-step direct relationship graph (DRG) and the computational singular perturbation (CSP) importance index method, a reduced model of n-dodecane was developed involving 159 species and 399 reactions, while the detailed n-dodecane mechanism consists of 1279 species and 5056 reactions. Then, the n-dodecane skeletal mechanism was constructed based on a decoupling methodology, involving the skeletal C12... [more]

Micro- and Macroscale Consequences of Interactions between CO2 and Shale Rocks
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: carbon dioxide (CO2), chemical properties, mechanical properties, petrophysical properties, physico-chemical interaction, shale, sorption
In carbon storage activities, and in shale oil and gas extraction (SOGE) with carbon dioxide (CO2) as stimulation fluid, CO2 comes into contact with shale rock and its pore fluid. As a reactive fluid, the injected CO2 displays a large potential to modify the shale’s chemical, physical, and mechanical properties, which need to be well studied and documented. The state of the art on shale−CO2 interactions published in several review articles does not exhaust all aspects of these interactions, such as changes in the mechanical, petrophysical, or petrochemical properties of shales. This review paper presents a characterization of shale rocks and reviews their possible interaction mechanisms with different phases of CO2. The effects of these interactions on petrophysical, chemical and mechanical properties are highlighted. In addition, a novel experimental approach is presented, developed and used by our team to investigate mechanical properties by exposing shale to different saturation flu... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: ejector structure, entrainment ratio, spray characteristics, two-phase ejectors, visualization
A two-phase flow ejector is an important part of a water mist fire suppression system, and these devices have become a popular research topic in recent years. This paper proposes a supersonic ejector that aims to improve the efficiency of water mist fire suppression systems. The effects of ejector geometric parameters on the entrainment ratio (ER) were explored. The effects of primary flow pressure (PP) on the mixing process and flow phenomena were studied by a high-speed camera. The experimental results show that the ER first increases and then decreases with increasing PP. ER increases with increasing ejector area ratio (AR). The PP corresponding to the maximum ER of ejectors with a different nozzle exit position (NXP) is 3.6 bar. The ejector with an NXP of +1 and AR of 6 demonstrate the best performance, and the ER of this ejector reaches 36.29. The spray half-cone angle of the ejector increases with increasing ER, reaching a maximum value of 7.07°. The unstable atomization half-con... [more]

Development of Vacuum Insulation Panels with Utilization of Organic By-Products
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: alternative insulator, thermal insulation material, vacuum insulation panel
The need for the development of new, advanced building materials increases every year, especially due to the necessary diminution of energy performance for building structures and for building production itself (including the production of building materials). Along with the energy performance problems in construction, the issue of CO2 emission associated with building and the production of building materials is also important. In the field of advanced thermal insulation materials, vacuum insulation panels (VIPs) give the best results. However, their high-energy performance and material consumption present a problem. This work represents an initial part of the development of alternative insulators, based on agricultural and textile industry waste usable in the production of VIP. This article recapitulates basic knowledge regarding key thermal insulation properties of developed insulators and their fire reactions, which impact possible usage in building structures.

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, gyrotron resonator, hydraulic test, mini-channels, pressure drop, Raschig rings
The design and manufacturing of different full-size mock-ups of the resonance cavity of gyrotrons, relevant for fusion applications, were performed according to two different cooling strategies. The first one relies on mini-channels, which are very promising in the direction of increasing the heat transfer in the heavily loaded cavity, but which could face an excessively large pressure drop, while the second one adopts the solution of Raschig rings, already successfully used in European operating gyrotrons. The mock-ups, manufactured with conventional techniques, were hydraulically characterized at the Thales premises, using water at room temperature. The measured pressure drop data were used to validate the corresponding numerical computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models, developed with the commercial software STAR-CCM+ (Siemens PLM Software, Plano TX, U.S.A.) and resulting in excellent agreement with the test results. Charging and Discharging Scheduling for Electrical Vehicles Using a Shapley-Value Approach
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: battery charging, coalition, electric vehicles, Optimization, Shapley value
The number of electric vehicles (EV) in the world has been increasing and is gaining momentum. The large-scale use of EVs in public life has initiated the need to establish EV battery charging services within the power system. Currently, EVs serve as a transportation tool and also as a flexible load. This publication examines the possibility of the owner of an electric vehicle choosing a battery recharging point, as well as of the involvement of several decision makers in the selection of a charging schedule. This problem is important because we assume that a significant proportion of EVs mainly use two parking spaces, one located close to the place of residence and another close to the workplace. We accept and prove that a car charging station can be created by the employer (company) and implemented in the best interests of the employer and the employee (EV owner). For that, a coalition between the company and the EV owner has to be formed. To support rational decisions, this study so... [more]

Techno Economic Analysis of Vehicle to Grid (V2G) Integration as Distributed Energy Resources in Indonesia Power System
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: driving pattern, electric vehicles, frequency regulation, load leveling, vehicle-to-grid
High penetration of electric vehicles (EVs) leads to high stress on a power grid, especially when the supply cannot cover and actively respond to the unpredictable demand caused by charging EVs. In the Java-Madura-Bali (JAMALI) area, Indonesia, the capability of the grid to balance its supply and demand is very limited, and massive EV charging additionally worsens the condition because of unbalanced load profiles. Ancillary services of EVs have led to the idea of utilizing EV batteries for grid support, owing to their high-speed response to the fluctuating power system. In this study, a techno-economic analysis of the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) system in the JAMALI grid is conducted in terms of the changes in the feed-in tariff schemes, including regular, natural, and demand response tariffs. The results show that by utilizing EVs, the supply during peak hours can be reduced by up to 2.8% (for coal) and 8.8% (for gas). Subject: Process Design
Keywords: axial-flux machines, design of electric drives, modular construction, soft magnetic composites, switched reluctance machines
Nowadays, there is a renewed interest in switched reluctance machines and especially in axial-flux switched reluctance machines (AFSRM). This paper presents a comprehensive design procedure for modular AFSRM with an inner stator and two exterior rotors that have a new distribution of the stator and rotor poles, resulting in short magnetic paths with no flux reversal. After a description of the proposed machine, the output torque equation is derived from a simplified non-linear energy conversion loop and guidelines for its design are given. Once the preliminary sizing has been carried out the different modules of the AFSRM, the magnetically active parts made with SMC, are reshaped or refined using 3D printing and 3D electromagnetic finite element analysis until they reach their definitive shape and dimensions. Finally, an AFSRM has been built following the proposed design procedure and has been validated by experimental measurements.

A High-Efficiency Three-Level ANPC Inverter Based on Hybrid SiC and Si Devices
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: ANPC, hybrid SiC and Si, loss analysis
Silicon carbide (SiC) devices have excellent performance, such as higher switching frequency and lower switching loss compared with traditional silicon (Si) devices. The application of SiC devices in inverters can achieve higher efficiency and power density. In recent years, the production process of SiC devices has become more mature, but the cost is still several times that of traditional Si devices. In order to balance cost and efficiency, replacing only some of the Si devices with SiC devices in a topology is a better choice. This paper proposed a high-efficiency hybrid active neutral point clamped (ANPC) three-level inverter which has only two SiC devices and the other devices are Si devices. A specific modulation strategy was applied to concentrate switching losses on the SiC devices and reduce the on-state loss through parallel operation during freewheeling intervals. Machine Learning for Benchmarking Models of Heating Energy Demand of Houses in Northern Canada
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: benchmarking models, building automation and control system, linear regression, Machine Learning, measurements, Northern houses, ongoing commissioning
In most cases, the benchmarking models of energy use in houses are developed based on current and past data, and they continue to be used without any update. This paper proposes the method of retraining of benchmarking models by applying machine learning techniques when new measurements are made available. The method uses as a case study the measurements of heating energy demand from two semi-detached houses of Northern Canada. The results of the prediction of heating energy demand using static or augmented window techniques are compared with measurements. The daily energy signature is used as a benchmarking model due to its simplicity and performance. However, the proposed retraining method can be applied to any form of benchmarking model. The method should be applied in all possible situations, and be an integral part of intelligent building automation and control systems (BACS) for the ongoing commissioning for building energy-related applications.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery energy storage systems, electric vehicle charging stations, logistics
Currently, there are three major barriers toward a greener energy landscape in the future: (a) Curtailed grid integration of energy from renewable sources like wind and solar; (b) The low investment attractiveness of large-scale battery energy storage systems; and, (c) Constraints from the existing electric infrastructure on the development of charging station networks to meet the increasing electrical transportation demands. A new conceptual design of mobile battery energy storage systems has been proposed in recent studies to reduce the curtailment of renewable energy while limiting the public costs of battery energy storage systems. This work designs a logistics system in which electric semi-trucks ship batteries between the battery energy storage system and electric vehicle charging stations, enabling the planning and operation of power grid independent electric vehicle charging station networks. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electric vehicles, electricity consumption, photovoltaics, residential buildings, self-consumption, smart charging
The integration of photovoltaic (PV) and electric vehicle (EV) charging in residential buildings has increased in recent years. At high latitudes, both pose new challenges to the residential power systems due to the negative correlation between household load and PV power production and the increase in household peak load by EV charging. EV smart charging schemes can be an option to overcome these challenges. This paper presents a distributed and a centralized EV smart charging scheme for residential buildings based on installed photovoltaic (PV) power output and household electricity consumption. The proposed smart charging schemes are designed to determine the optimal EV charging schedules with the objective to minimize the net load variability or to flatten the net load profile. Minimizing the net load variability implies both increasing the PV self-consumption and reducing the peak loads. The charging scheduling problems are formulated and solved with quadratic programming approach... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hydraulic fracturing, intrinsic permeability, methane adsorption, permeability evolution, relative permeability, water saturation
The increasing demand on coal production has led to the gradually increase of mining depth and more high methane mines, which bring difficulties in terms of coalbed methane (CBM) extraction. Hydraulic fracturing is widely applied to improve the production of CBM, control mine gas, and prevent gas outbursts. It improves coal bed permeability and accelerate desorption and migration of CBM. Even though the impacts of hydraulic fracturing treatment on the coal reservoirs are rare, negative effects could not be totally ignored. To defend this defect, the presented work aims to study the influence of water filtration on coal body deformation and permeability evolution. For this purpose, a simulation based finite element method was developed to build a solid-fluid coupled two-phase flow model using commercial software (COMSOL Multiphysics 5.4).
