March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hybrid DC circuit breaker, MMC, multi-terminal flexible DC system, short circuit current calculation
The analysis and calculation of the short-circuit fault current in the DC grid is of great significance to the design and configuration of the converter station and DC circuit breaker parameters. The existing flexible DC system not only includes the modular multilevel converter (MMC) converter, but also needs power equipment such as the fault current limiter and DC circuit breaker. Therefore, the system modeling and short circuit calculation of the multi-terminal DC system after adding the DC circuit breaker are also of great significance for the design of DC power system parameters and the grid troubleshooting ability. In this paper, firstly, the parameters of the four-terminal DC system of the modular multilevel converter (MMC) are simplified, and the analytical solution of the short circuit fault current of the multi-terminal DC system is given. Then, the external characteristics of the cascaded hybrid DC circuit breaker are modeled. Based on the equivalent circuit of the fault curr... [more]

Meiyan Lou, Ligang Yao
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: analytical model, finite element analysis, magnetic gear, nutation, permanent magnet
This paper presents an inner-type of magnetic gears for non-contact driving, based on the nutation gearing principle. An improved three-dimensional analytical model, based on the magnetic vector potential of rectangular permanent magnets, via the equivalent current, is deduced for the proposed nutation magnetic gears. The transformation of coordinates is applied for a global field solution. The analytical model and the finite element model have analyzed the output torque of the nutation magnetic drive, respectively. The results show that the values calculated by the two models are consistent. The proposed analytical model can provide a reference for the design and optimization of nutation magnetic gears and other permanent magnetic mechanisms with rectangular magnets.

Keywords: Borehole Heat Exchanger (BHE), FEFLOW, finite element modeling, ground source heat pump, small-scale thermal energy storage, thermal imbalance of the ground source
Model simulation allows to present the time-varying temperature distribution of the ground source for heat pumps. A system of 25 double U-shape borehole heat exchangers (BHEs) in long-term operation and three scenarios were created. In these scenarios, the difference between balanced and non-balanced energy load was considered as well as the influence of the hydrogeological factors on the temperature of the ground source. The aim of the study was to compare different thermal regimes of BHEs operation and examine the influence of small-scale and short-time thermal energy storage on ground source thermal balance. To present the performance of the system according to geological and hydrogeological factors, a Feflow® software (MIKE Powered by DHI Software) was used. The temperature for the scenarios was visualized after 10 and 30 years of the system’s operation. In this paper, a case is presented in which waste thermal energy from space cooling applications during summer months was used to... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: defect diagnosis, delamination, fuzzy classifier, infrared thermography, photovoltaic panels, discoloring
Infrared Thermography has been used as a tool for predictive and preventive maintenance of Photovoltaic panels. International Electrotechnical Commission provides some guidelines for using thermography to detect defects in Photovoltaic panels. However, the proposed guidelines focus only on the location of the hot spot than diagnosing the types of faults. The long-term reliability and efficiency of panels can be affected by progressive defects such as discolouring and delamination. This paper proposed the new Thermal Pixel Counting algorithm to detect the above faults based on three thermal profile index values. The real-time experimental testing was carried out using FLIR T420bx® thermal imager and results have been provided to validate the proposed method. In this work, the fuzzy rule-based classification system is proposed to automate the classification process. Fuzzy reasoning method based on a single winner rule fuzzy classifier is designed with modified rule weights by particular... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: 3D flux, E-shaped cores, electric vehicles, finite element analysis, permanent magnet machines, permanent magnets, recycling
Rare-earth metals used for manufacturing Permanent Magnets (PMs) remain classified as critical raw materials by the European Commission. In order to secure the supply of electrical machines due to the increasing demand of Hybrid and Full Electrical Vehicles ((H)EVs), recycling has emerged as a valuable alternative. Hence, this paper presents the concept of a modular PM machine with a hybrid rotor and 3D flux paths, for application in ((H)EVs). The proposed machine topology is intended to facilitate the extraction of PM material towards a recycling process. The selection of a machine for prototyping is carried out by investigating the effect of the variation of the number of rotor teeth and stator modules on various parameters, with models developed in Finite Element (FE). Finally, the models developed of the selected combination were validated with a detailed experimental evaluation of the prototype.

Peng Zhang, Xiangsu Chen, Chaohai Fan
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: absence of failure data, heavy oil gathering pipelines, information diffusion theory, safety evaluation, variable fuzzy set theory
At present, the number of oil and gas gathering and transportation pipelines is numerous, and leakage accidents occur frequently. Each year, due to pipeline failure, there are immeasurable consequences for people and the environment around the affected pipelines. In order to reduce the risk of leakage accidents in heavy oil gathering pipelines and prevent the occurrence of major spills, it is of great significance to carry out safety assessments of them. However, failure data of these pipelines is seriously deficient and statistical methods used to evaluate pipeline safety are incompatible. Therefore, this paper proposes a risk assessment system for heavy oil gathering pipelines in the absence of failure data. Firstly, a Bayesian network (BN) for the leak safety evaluation of heavy oil gathering pipelines is established via mapping from a bow-tie (BT) model. Then, information diffusion theory is combined with fuzzy set theory to obtain the failure probability of each factor affecting t... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: borehole thermal storage, capacity resistance model, ground source heat pump system, infinite cylindrical source, vertical spiral ground heat exchanger
Considering the heat capacity inside vertical spiral ground heat exchanger (VSGHEX) in the simulation is one of the most noteworthy challenge to design the ground source heat pump (GSHP) system with VSGHEXs. In this paper, a new simulation model for VSGHEXs is developed by combining the ICS model with the CaRM. The developed simulation model can consider the heat capacity inside VSGHEX and provide dynamic calculation with high speed and appropriate precision. In order to apply the CaRM, the equivalent length was introduced. Then, the equivalent length was approximated by comparing the results of the CaRM and the numerical calculation. In addition, the calculation model of the VSGHEX was integrated into the design and simulation tool for the GSHP system. The accuracy of the tool was verified by comparing with the measurements. The error between supply temperatures of the measurements and calculation is approximately 2 °C at the maximum. Finally, assuming GSHP systems with VSGHEXs, whose... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: acidification, micro-nano-computed tomography (CT), mixed siliciclastic–carbonate rocks, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), pore structure, T2 cutoff
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is used widely to characterize petrophysical properties of siliciclastic and carbonate rocks but rarely to study those of mixed siliciclastic−carbonate rocks. In this study, 13 different core samples and eight acidified core samples selected amongst those 13 from the Paleogene Shahejie Formation in Southern Laizhouwan Sag, Bohai Bay Basin, were tested by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), micro-nano-computed tomography (CT), and NMR. SEM and CT results revealed a complex pore structure diversity, pore distribution, and pore-throat connectivity in mixed reservoirs. Sixteen groups of NMR experiments addressed changes in these properties and permeabilities of mixed siliciclastic−carbonate rocks before and after acidification to determine its effects on such reservoirs. NMR experimental results showed no “diffusion coupling” effect in mixed siliciclastic−carbonate rocks. Distributions of NMR T2 cutoff values (T2C) are closely related to the pore structure... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aviation variable frequency motor, aviation variable frequency power supply, more electric aircraft, starting pulse vibration torque, step-down starting
The more electric aircraft provides 115 V/360~800 Hz variable frequency power supply for the variable frequency asynchronous motor, and the motor operation characteristics change with the power frequency variation. It causes the starting pulse vibration torque with the low-frequency power supply (360 Hz) to increase greatly and the mechanical shock and fatigue damage. Therefore, this paper proposes step-down starting method with the low-frequency power supply. Based on the electromagnetic principles generated by the starting pulse vibration torque, this paper uses a novel method of simulation data fitting to establish an approximate model of the starting pulse vibration torque. The parameter design formulas of the low-frequency step-down starting methods, including the reducing voltage, the series resistance, and the series inductance are proposed. The effectiveness of the different methods are verified, and the performance is compared through the simulation. The experimental verificat... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: carbon dioxide phase transition, crack propagation, dynamic response, gathering energy effect, rock mass excavation
Carbon dioxide phase transition fracturing has been widely used in rock mass excavation under complex environments, and its special rock breaking process shows obvious gathering energy effect. In this paper, the gathering energy effect of this technology is considered and then the impact reduction coefficient is defined and determined. Eventually, a combined method of field tests and numerical simulations is used to study the crack propagation characteristics and spatiotemporal changes of dynamic response. The results show that the cracks grow more and more slowly as time goes by; the peak displacement and peak point velocity in the primary impact direction are both greater than those in the secondary impact direction. The peak point velocity in different directions decreases as the distance from borehole increases and it decays more and more slowly. With the increase of distance from the borehole, the peak effective stress in the primary impact direction constantly decreases. However,... [more]

The article presents an assessment of the potential for using low enthalpy geothermal resources for electricity generation on the basis of the Małopolskie Voivodeship (southern Poland). Identification the locations providing the best prospects with the highest efficiency and possible gross power output. Thermodynamic calculations of power plants were based on data from several geothermal wells: the Bańska PGP-1, Bańska IG-1, Bańska PGP-3 and Chochołów PIG-1 which are working wells located in one of the best geothermal reservoirs in Poland. As the temperature of geothermal waters from the wells does not exceed 86 °C, considerations include the use of binary technologies—the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) and Kalina Cycle. The potential gross capacity calculated for existing geothermal wells will not exceed 900 kW for ORC and 1.6 MW for Kalina Cycle. In the case of gross electricity, the total production will not exceed 3.3 GWh/year using the ORC, and will not exceed 6.3 GWh/year for the Ka... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: methanation, methane, SNG, UCG, underground coal gasification
An experimental campaign on the methane-oriented underground coal gasification (UCG) process was carried out in a large-scale laboratory installation. Two different types of coal were used for the oxygen/steam blown experiments, i.e., “Six Feet” semi-anthracite (Wales) and “Wesoła” hard coal (Poland). Four multi-day gasification tests (96 h continuous processes) were conducted in artificially created coal seams under two distinct pressure regimes-20 and 40 bar. The experiments demonstrated that the methane yields are significantly dependent on both the properties of coal (coal rank) and the pressure regime. The average CH4 concentration for “Six Feet” semi-anthracite was 15.8%vol. at 20 bar and 19.1%vol. at 40 bar. During the gasification of “Wesoła” coal, the methane concentrations were 10.9%vol. and 14.8%vol. at 20 and 40 bar, respectively. The “Six Feet” coal gasification was characterized by much higher energy efficiency than gasification of the “Wesoła” coal and for both tested co... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: co-simulation, operator training, renewable resources, SCADA
The complexity of power systems is rising mainly due to the expansion of renewable energy generation. Due to the enormous variability and uncertainty associated with these types of resources, they require sophisticated planning tools so that they can be used appropriately. In this sense, several tools for the simulation of renewable energy assets have been proposed. However, they are traditionally focused on the simulation of the generation process, leaving the operation of these systems in the background. Conversely, more expert SCADA operators for the management of renewable power plants are required, but their training is not an easy task. SCADA operation is usually complex, due to the wide set of information available. In this sense, simulation or co-simulation tools can clearly help to reduce the learning curve and improve their skills. Therefore, this paper proposes a useful simulator based on a JavaScript engine that can be easily connected to any renewable SCADAs, making it pos... [more]

Keywords: deep reinforcement learning (DRL), electric vehicles (EVs), independent-drive technology, optimal torque distribution
In order to effectively reduce the energy consumption of the vehicle, an optimal torque distribution control for multi-axle electric vehicles (EVs) with in-wheel motors is proposed. By analyzing the steering dynamics, the formulas of additional steering resistance are given. Aiming at the multidimensional continuous system that cannot be solved by traditional optimization methods, the deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) algorithm for deep reinforcement learning is adopted. Each wheel speed and deflection angle are selected as the state, the distribution ratio of drive torque is the optimized action and the state of charge (SOC) is the reward. After completing a large number of training for vehicle model, the algorithm is verified under conventional steering and extreme steering conditions. The maximum SOC decline of the vehicle can be reduced by about 5% under conventional steering conditions based on the motor efficiency mapused. The combination of artificial intelligence techno... Keywords: address space layout randomization (ASLR), code-reuse attack, rerandomization, return-oriented programming (ROP), seamless memory randomization
Nowadays, various computing services are often hosted on cloud platforms for their availability and cost effectiveness. However, such services are frequently exposed to vulnerabilities. Therefore, many countermeasures have been invented to defend against software hacking. At the same time, more complicated attacking techniques have been created. Among them, code-reuse attacks are still an effective means of abusing software vulnerabilities. Although state-of-the-art address space layout randomization (ASLR) runtime-based solutions provide a robust way to mitigate code-reuse attacks, they have fundamental limitations; for example, the need for system modifications, and the need for recompiling source codes or restarting processes. These limitations are not appropriate for mission-critical services because a seamless operation is very important. In this paper, we propose a novel ASLR technique to provide memory rerandomization without interrupting the process execution. In addition, we d... [more]

Hongwei Li, Kaide Ren, Shuaibing Li, Haiying Dong
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fuzzy clustering, multi-model predictive control, wind power generation
To deal with the randomness and uncertainty of the wind power generation process, this paper proposes the use of the clustering method to complement the multi-model predictive control algorithm for active power control. Firstly, the fuzzy clustering algorithm is adopted to classify actual measured data; then, the forgetting factor recursive least square method is used to establish the multi-model of the system as the prediction model. Secondly, the model predictive controller is designed to use the measured wind speed as disturbance, the pitch angle as the control variable, and the active power as the output. Finally, the parameters and measured data of wind generators in operation in Western China are adopted for simulation and verification. Compared to the single model prediction control method, the adaptive multi-model predictive control method can yield a much higher prediction accuracy, which can significantly eliminate the instability in the process of wind power generation.

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Colburn j-factor, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), corrugation profile, friction factor, plate heat exchanger
The present study numerically investigates thermal performance and turbulent flow characteristics of chevron-type plate heat exchangers with sinusoidal, trapezoidal, triangular, and elliptical corrugation profiles. The commercial code of ANSYS Fluent (v. 17.0) is used for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation with the realizable k-ε model. In particular, we focus on the influence of configuration shape on a substantial change in flow direction near the contact point, yielding local vorticity. As a result, secondary vortical motions are observed in the flow passage with vorticity that is distributed locally and which changes near the contact point. Higher flow mixing generated and distributed by the secondary vortical motions contributes to the increase of the Colburn j-factor as well as the friction factor. The highest Colburn j-factor and friction factor are obtained for an elliptical profile, compared to other shapes, because of the increase in the vortex strength near the co... [more]
Advanced Turbine Cycles with Organic Media

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: efficiency, ORC, thermodynamic cycles
Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) power plants have become very popular and have found their applications in systems with renewable sources of energy. So far their overall efficiencies are not very impressive and only for the upper temperature of about 300 °C do they exceed 20%. A drawback of these cycles is the limitation of the cycle upper temperature due to the heat exchanger technology and the materials used. However, it is possible to overcome these difficulties by certain modifications of the thermodynamic cycles, a proper choice of the working medium and the optimization of cycle parameters. In the paper the problems of choosing the working medium and the question of higher temperature at the turbine inlet have been discussed. Different modifications of the schemas of the thermodynamic cycles have also been taken into account. The variants of power plants with regenerators, reheaters and heat exchangers have been considered. The proposed increase in temperature (in some cases up to 60... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active flow control, adjoint-based method, Gaussian process regression, Model Predictive Control, ridge regression
Complexity of online computation is a drawback of model predictive control (MPC) when applied to the Navier−Stokes equations. To reduce the computational complexity, we propose a method to approximate the MPC with an explicit control law by using regression analysis. In this paper, we extracted two state-feedback control laws and two output-feedback control laws for flow around a cylinder as a benchmark. The state-feedback control laws that feed back different quantities to each other were extracted by ridge regression, and the two output-feedback control laws, whose measurement output is the surface pressure, were extracted by ridge regression and Gaussian process regression. In numerical simulations, the state-feedback control laws were able to suppress vortex shedding almost completely. While the output-feedback control laws could not suppress vortex shedding completely, they moderately improved the drag of the cylinder. Moreover, we confirmed that these control laws have some degre... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Modelling, neutral point current, PWM converter, T-type, three-level
Since a T-type three-level PWM converter has several intrinsic advantages, it has been researched for various applications such as grid-connected converter systems. However, it necessarily requires an additional voltage control loop for balancing the upper and the lower DC-link voltage. To satisfy this requirement, an offset voltage is widely used to provide a neutral point current without affecting other variables such as total DC-link voltage and three-phase input current. However, these methods are mostly based on the averaged value between the applied offset voltage and the neutral point voltage or current, and there is no exact analytical model. Therefore, in this paper, the exact theoretical relationship between the offset voltage and the neutral point current is analyzed. This result can be expected to be useful for an effective voltage balancing control loop design as well as the better understanding of the whole system operation. The validity of the obtained analytical model i... [more]

Electromechanical coupling devices have been playing an indispensable role in modern engineering. Particularly, flexoelectricity, an electromechanical coupling effect that involves strain gradients, has shown promising potential for future miniaturized electromechanical coupling devices. Therefore, simulation of flexoelectricity is necessary and inevitable. In this paper, we provide an overview of numerical procedures on modeling flexoelectricity. Specifically, we summarize a generalized formulation including the electrostatic stress tensor, which can be simplified to retrieve other formulations from the literature. We further show the weak and discretization forms of the boundary value problem for different numerical methods, including isogeometric analysis and mixed FEM. Several benchmark problems are presented to demonstrate the numerical implementation. The source code for the implementation can be utilized to analyze and develop more complex flexoelectric nano-devices.

Keywords: flow maldistribution, heat exchanger, inlet header, pressure drop, splitter plate
The pressure drop increases along with the decrease in the flow maldistribution in the two-stage distributing inlet headers of a plate-fin heat exchanger. To solve this issue, we proposed a new inlet header configuration with splitter plates to decrease the flow maldistribution and pressure drop simultaneously. We used computational fluid dynamic technology to analyze the flow properties in the inlet header configuration and calculated the flow maldistribution degree of the outlet channels and the pressure drop in the inlet header. We performed a sensitivity analysis between the structural parameters, the flow maldistribution degree, and the pressure drop. We determined the optimum values of the structural parameters (the construction of transition duct, the number of splitter plates, the inclined angle of outermost plates, the height of splitter plates, the height of inlet header, etc.), and acquired the optimum configuration of the improved inlet header. Compared with the traditional... [more]

Keywords: climate, deep learning, ecology, FLUXNET, neural network, photosynthesis
Global warming, which largely results from excessive carbon emission, has become an increasingly heated international issue due to its ever-detereorating trend and the profound consequences. Plants sequester a large amount of atmospheric CO 2 via photosynthesis, thus greatly mediating global warming. In this study, we aim to model the temporal dynamics of photosynthesis for two different vegetation types to further understand the controlling factors of photosynthesis machinery. We experimented with a feedforward neural network that does not utilize past histories, as well as two networks that integrate past and present information, long short-term memory and transformer. Our results showed that one single climate driver, shortwave radiation, carries the most information with respect to prediction of upcoming photosynthetic activities. We also demonstrated that photosynthesis and its interactions with climate drivers, such as temperature, precipitation, radiation, and vapor pres... [more]
